EDITOR’S NOTE |

MARY DOWNER DITCH • EDITORIAL DIRECTOR OF POV

THE NEW NORMAL I sat down to write this editor’s note from my newly created home office in our dining room. It’s 7am and it’s just me and the dog. John has left for work and Jackson is still sleeping. No, it’s not the weekend. It’s a Wednesday. And this is the new normal in our home with the threat of COVID-19 or the novel coronavirus.

I believe our overgrown Muppet of a dog was sent to us at the right time. My only child has a built in playmate who absolutely loves him and tolerates his games of chase and “secret agent”. (Don’t ask. I don’t get the rules. But they are darn cute together!) My biggest fear with there being no school was that Jackson would miss his friends. I know Belle’s not a human, but she sure is helping to fill the void.

In the course of one week, our world has changed. Schools have closed and my office has gone remote. All of Rushing Media is being run from our employees’ homes. How amazing is that! Turns out, Rushing Media was prepared long before social distancing was a thing. Brian’s hand was forced when our old server turned in it’s two week notice around Christmas and we moved our entire server to Google’s G Suite. Over the last few months we have been able to work out the bugs and get our whole team moving in the same direction. When word came down on Friday, March 13 that we needed to flatten the curve, we gave big hugs, packed up our computers, printers and filing cabinets, and headed for home. One final visit to the office on Monday for managers to get a few things left behind, clean out the office refrigerator, and reset the thermostats, and we are entirely remote! You would think a person like me with social anxiety would be thriving! But the truth is, I miss my people. You don’t realize the blessing that is your work family until you are apart. Sure, we do Google Hangouts and I can physically see them, but I still miss that interaction. They are my comfort in hard times, truly my second family. But there are new blessings that I am extremely aware of and thankful for. I am growing closer to God despite being unable to go to Mass. I have had quiet time in my day to say my prayers and do my readings in this Lenten season. Without their congregations being able to come to them, churches have brought worship and prayer online. I have been able to watch and listen to pastors and priests from other churches and denominations and it has been wonderful to have God open my eyes to hear his word.

And speaking of Jackson, this might be our biggest blessing of all. Spending more time with him. Sure, we’re on day three of homeschooling, and not a single book has been cracked, but having him here is nice. When he was younger, John was the one who took time off of work to be home with him. I went back to work. I missed out on lots of things that stay-at-home Moms get to experience. While I loved working, a tiny part of me was jealous that John was the stay-at-home parent. So while this curve ball is not the way I wanted life to go, my silver lining is being able to work from home while he is out of school. We might not be talking to one another by the time things go back to normal though, so remind me to go back and read this column! For PoV, this is our Spring Issue! We welcome spring and all the beautiful beginnings she brings. For local band, Louisiana Leroux, it’s time for a rebirth as well! Great news fans! The band is getting back together. Since welcoming new lead singer Jeff McCarty, Leroux is heading back to the studio to record a new album. Check out their exciting new beginning on page 26. In spite of the fear we may all be facing, it’s up to us to find the beauty in it. Groups of individuals have come together to creatively brighten the days of those in our community. Starting on page 36, we highlight just a few of the amazing good things being done around our area in spite of the lockdowns certain populations face. While we do not know what the future holds, we do control today. I encourage you to place your fears and anxiety in God’s hands and find your silver lining. As we welcome Spring, find the good in each day and celebrate it. POV

FINDING OUR

BLESSINGS What will our world look like in just a few short weeks? It’s the question I’m grappling with as I sit to write. In the past few days, we’ve seen all schools shut down, dentist offices close, food shortages. This is a monthly publication so by the time this article is out and being read, weeks will have passed. Day change literally by the minute.

We’re mid-March as I write. My oldest son turned 15 this week, and for the first time in his life, restaurants were shut down, so going out to eat for the big day wasn’t an option. My second son has a birthday in a few days as well, and I can’t help but wonder what his big day will look like. Life has looked so different in such a short time. No one really imagined this when we were making our New Year predictions about a new decade and what 2020 would look like. There’s an underlying fear that can’t be denied. If our economy cracks, how does that affect each one of us? The virus feels like a giant unknown, with more questions than answers. We sat down with the kids when the seriousness of the virus in our country became apparent. “We aren’t scared, but this is serious,” is how we started our speech. We’re used to family meetings, but not one like this. “When can we go back to school?” “Will we get sick?”

“Will the government shut down our business?” It was just a few of the questions they voiced aloud, while their dad and I struggled to answer them well, without increasing their fear. The truth is that we didn’t have any real answers to any of their questions. The unknown looms larger than the known as I write this. Even last night, as I closed my eyes to fall asleep, my husband said “It’s the weight of not knowing that’s starting to take its toll.” I reached over for his hand, not wanting him to see the tears beginning to well up in my eyes. He had said exactly what I had been feeling all day. I want to stand strong, walk around unfazed, be the beacon of hope. But it’s been a long week.

The weight of owning a business with over a dozen employees asking us how long they’ll have work has played its toll. We don’t have answers for them, either. April 2020 14 povhouma.com

Training Starts April 14, 2020 and July 7, 2020

The words written by a woman who suffered deep loss a few short months ago said it like this: “I’m learning shepherd Jesus, who’s acquainted with the valleys, not afraid to walk it with us.” The image of the Jesus I know and love walking with us has shaped my view of the past few weeks. “I can be honest with Him, because He’s holding me …. He creates passages where fear tells me I’m in a dead end. He is Life when the planet is gripped with a fear of death…. He says to come to Him when weary and burdened, not after.” Maybe the best thing I can relearn during this time is Him. It’s been quieter in so many ways over the past week. No running here and there. No juggling of after-school events. No figuring out how to get to all the places. There’s been beautiful moments with our family we wouldn’t have otherwise been able to enjoy. I’ve kayaked in the bayou behind our neighborhood with my boys. When this is all over, I’m praying the blessing will loom much larger than the burden.

Mark and Stacie Theriot decided to put their newly built home on the market in 2013 to buy an older ranch style home and dive head first into a home renovation project. “We packed up and moved into Mark’s parents camper and lived in their driveway while we worked on the renovation day and night for three months,” Stacie recalls.

Equipped with a passion for design and decorating, Stacie was ready to tackle the project and enlist help from her family, including her children! From removing flooring, scraping the popcorn ceilings, and even gutting some rooms, the Theriots jumped in. “My children were a big help! We put four of them to work!,” Stacie remembers.

New darkwood floors throughout most of the home added a formal touch and blended perfectly with Stacie’s traditional style with a twist of modern. A fresh coat of paint completely transformed the interior and allows the details to shine such as the custom trim in the dining room and a custom designed stair rail in the foyer. Polishing off the interior with some of Stacie’s own artwork and a mix of old and new furnishings that have a collected feel breathe new life into the 40 year old home. “I had a lot of fun making it into a home we would love and grow in,” Stacie shares. Specialty/type of business: Orthodontist Local Since: 1978 What's In Store: Following in my fathers’ footsteps, I pursued a career in the dental field and opened my own practice 42 years ago in Houma to treat patients in Terrebonne Parish and the surrounding areas. Over the past five years, I’ve expanded my practice to treat patients in the South Lafourche and surrounding areas with an office in Cut Off. At Ellender Orthodontics, we specialize in traditional braces and Invisalign clear aligners for children, teens, and adults.

The Latest: We’ve recently added the latest technology to our practice such as the iTero Digital Scanner. THE LEGACY OF LEROUX | 26

Louisiana Leroux gears up for a new beginning.

April 2020 24 povhouma.com

BY DREW MILLER | PHOTOS BY MISTY LEIGH MCELROY Whether it was their hard-hitting classic rock songs or their zydeco melodies representing Southeast Louisiana, Louisiana’s LeRoux, also simply known as LeRoux, has attracted many fans from across the country since they released their self titled album in 1978. Songs like the regional favorite “New Orleans Ladies” (voted Song of the Century by Gambit Magazine) and the Hot 100 hits such as “Addicted” and “Nobody Said It Was Easy” have led them to have a successful touring career since their inception.

Those tours led them to perform with such legendary acts as Journey, Kansas, ZZ Top and many more in front of thousands upon thousands of fans. The band’s music videos were featured on the inaugural year of MTV, and they were also featured on other popular showcases: Solid Gold, The Midnight Special and Don Kirchner’s Rock Concert. Perhaps even more impressive is how they were able to stick

10% OFF together in a career that spans across six decades. “Forty-three years and we’re still friends,” says Tony Haselden, guitarist, songwriter and founding member. “And it’s something we’re proud of.” But that doesn’t come to a surprise to Jeff McCarty, lead singer who joined

the band just over two years ago. “The band’s been around a long time, man. They’ve been really successful, and they have some major respect, especially in this area,” he says. “There’s no prima donnas in the band. There’s no attitudes. Everybody’s just down to earth and cool. I think those are my favorite things about this band.”

Along with the popular songs, packed shows and legacy, you can’t forget the high quality bodies of work, including the above-mentioned self-titled album, “Keep The Fire Burning”, “Up”,“Last Safe Place” and “So Fired Up.” But it’s their soon-to-be released album that some of the band members, which now consists of Jeff, Tony, Rod Roddy, Jim Odom, Mark Duthu, Nelson Blanchard, Joey Decker and Randy Carpenter, are saying is the best one yet. “It’s the best one we have ever done. Isn’t that how it goes? The

last one you did is always the best one,” smiles Jim, guitarist and songwriter. Although it is described as a “contemporary blues album,” the 10-track project is an ultimate collection of the sounds the band has been able to explore over the years, everything from southern rock to funky tunes to rhythm and blues. “It’s the best combination of everyone’s interests and represents the abilities of the band better than any album we’ve probably ever done,” Tony says. “That by default means it’s going to cover

a wide spectrum because everybody in the band has similar but different tastes. So it’s just a broad palette.” The process in creating their magnum opus moved at a different pace than previous albums, as Tony explains: “It’s not like the old days when this was all we did and you’d go in and finish an album in two or three weeks after it had been written. commended the efforts of producer Jeff Glixman for gathering it all and syncing the collection of songs. Tony says that the album took six months to complete. The longer than usual time was worth it, however, as they are ultimately happy with the finished product. “The sounds are good. The songs and lyrics are great,” says Rod, pianist and songwriter. “If it doesn’t do anything else but just come out to where I can listen to it, it was worth it. ‘Cause it’s a good record.”

The album features 8 songs written by band members and two written by friends they’ve met along the way. It also contains a guitar solo by Tab Benoit; backup vocals by Bobby Kimball, Bill Champlain, Keith Landry and Travis Thibodaux; and performances from their original bassist Leon Medica. The band decided to remake two fan favorites for their latest project, “New Orleans Ladies” and “Lifeline.” Rod says a lot of the songs were created so

they could be played at festivals as the band still remains active, performing roughly 35 shows a year. “It’s really fun stuff to play,” he continues. “It’s some different stuff we don’t normally do.” “We’d just like to build our draw so that we can play a few more places and reach more people. That’s what we’re hoping this album will do,” Tony says. The album was still being shopped around music labels at press time in early March but is expected to be released within the next few months, Jim says. He also says it will be not only available for purchase but also on all major streaming platforms. “The way we look at music these days is like: Once you find your place, it’s like one long song,” Jim adds. “It’s your sound. It’s your vibe. It’s what you are.” “We just want people to know there is a 2020 LeRoux, and there’s something in there to please the people who have been with us for 42 years–thank you very much,” Tony smiles. “And we also hope to bring in a fresh, new crowd.” POV

Look for

THE HELPERS

When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” - Fred Rogers Mr. Rogers is often quoted as reminding people to look for the helpers during a scary time. While he is believed to be referring to medical personnel and first responders, “helpers” can be as simple as those willing to brighten the day of another. Our world is facing a pandemic with COVID-19, or the novel coronavirus. As we go to press, our state is in the midst of a social distancing order. No gatherings of more than 50 people by order of the Governor. The President is suggesting no more

than ten. Nursing homes and assisted living facilities full of at-risk populations are closed to visitors. Schools are closed. Gyms and bars are closed and restaurants are take-out only. It’s getting scary out there. Isolation can be frightening. That’s where these helpers come in. Ordinary people who have stepped up to brighten the day of another in the simplest of ways. From visiting the nursing homes dressed as butterflies to leaving signs of appreciation around town, these are our helpers.

THE BROADWAY BRIGHTENS SPIRITS BY MARY DITCH The Broadway Elder Living and Rehabilitation in Lockport is getting creative with ways to keep their residents safe, healthy and happy in the wake of new regulations being handed down daily. “We had all these plans of next week we were going to be doing smaller activities and now we have to keep (the residents) a certain amount of distance from each other,” shares Courtney Carrere, Admissions and Marketing Director. “So we’re thinking of different things. Bingo over the Intercom has been a hit. We have to keep them a certain distance apart, but it’s working. We also have staff up and down the halls with them to help, because sometimes they yell ‘what was that number?’ And they are serious about their bingo games!” April 2020 36 povhouma.com

Residents’ loved ones are also getting creative in working around the “no visitor” policy. For the Mayet family, not seeing one another was not an option. “We have one gentleman who hasn’t missed a day visiting his wife since she joined us,” shares Carrere. “He has come to her window to visit. We are setting up dry erase boards so they can communicate.” The Broadway also has a program called It’s Never 2 Late. It’s Never 2 Late (iN2L) enhances the quality of residents’ lives by promoting independence through technology, while helping them connect with the world around them. An interactive content library provides memory care, therapy sessions, and wellness activities at their fingertips.

The iN2L also offers technology for the residents to be able to visit with loved ones who don’t live here, or now, loved ones who can’t visit. They can use the huge TV that rolls around to Skype on. They also have access to smaller, personal sized computers that bed-bound residents can hold in their laps.

Find your sole mate!

Bailey Mae, their in-house therapy dog, is also making the rounds, providing lots of puppy kisses and extra snuggles for the residents and the staff. The Broadway is continuing to uphold their commitment to the residents to always have fun activities for them to be able to do. “I think that’s really important to keep that vibe for them because you know, it’s never been that we could restrict them from seeing someone unless it was a medical isolation or something like that,” says Carrere. “Even the hospitals are allowing one guest depending on the situation. But the CDC has restricted nursing homes more than anyone because if you look at the other states, most deaths were in nursing homes because it spreads quicker and people who are truly affected are the elderly.”

FAITH FAMILY SHRIMP COMPANY

“We have FAITH your FAMILY will love our SHRIMP!”

LEARNING NEVER STOPS BY DREW MILLER When Governor John Bel Edwards announced all Louisiana k-12 public schools will be closed March 16-April 13 last Friday, concerns were raised by many parents across the state on how their children would continue learning during the postponement. While school districts are finding and implementing different online resources to continue education, local teacher Kari Boudreaux decided to take matters into her own hands by personally delivering a novel and learning packet to each of her 17 fifthgraders at their homes on Monday.

“I brought them to the kids because I wanted to have that face-to-face with the kids to say, ‘Hey, here’s your work. We’re going to be alright,’” she says. “I wanted them to feel comfortable…It was more personable for me to go bring it to my kids and have that face time with them and their parents.” Boudreaux, who teaches C.M. Washington Elementary students on Nicholls State University’s campus through the magnet

program, dropped off copies of the novel “Number the Stars”, a work of historical fiction by Lois Lowry. Accompanied with the book was a lesson plan with comprehension, vocabulary and creative activities for each chapter. Her students were happy to see her and receive their work, Boudreaux said, and the parents were appreciative. “In college you hear: ‘You have the heart of a teacher.’ I guess I just truly have the heart of a teacher,” she continued. “I knew I had to get this to my kids. They always come first for me.” The 22-year educator said she is also going to try and put something together for her fourth grade class, depending on how the situation progresses with the COVID-19. “I think it’s important for them to keep reading because that keeps their minds going and it keeps them abreast of their levels and where they are at in reading,” Boudreaux says. “…Strong readers can do almost all things.

LIBRARY “ALL A FLUTTER” BY MARY DITCH

Beautiful butterflies waved their delicate wings as they danced and frolicked outside the windows of local senior living facilities. Team members of the Terrebonne Parish Library System, Lillie Brunet, Kristi Schieffler, Lisa Arceneaux, and Carla Duplantis, were experiencing a lull during their day while closed to inside patrons. They decided to make the best of the situation and bring a little happiness to their elderly patrons. “We did it as a spur of the moment activity,” shares Lillie. “We miss our patrons who are under quarantine and wanted them to know we were thinking of them.” The butterflies have visited Heritage Manor, The Oaks, Terrebonne Place, The Homestead and The Suites.

“Residents have cheered and clapped,” shares Lillie. “They are truly happy to see us, and it has been lifting their spirits. We have coordinated each of our visits with the activities director at each home so they have time to get to the windows.” The butterfly costumes were for Bug Crawl, an annual Library event whose future is uncertain at this point. “God has other plans,” says Lillie, “so we put on the costumes and grabbed a portable speaker, and began our journey as butterflies to spread cheer!” And it’s not just the elderly patients who are benefiting. “You think you are going out to cheer someone else up,” shares Lillie, “but it's life changing for yourself. You get double the gift.”

IN THE MIDST OF A CRISIS, THERE ARE SIGNS OF JOY BY DREW MILLER During the panic and heartbreak that make up the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, one local business has been erecting signs of joy to be seen by those on the front lines of the pandemic and those kept in isolation for their own safety.

“You Are Loved,” is brightly displayed at four local nursing homes -- which aren’t allowing visitors across the state. “Directors from the homes said it put smiles on their faces; they were happy” says Natalie Falgout, President of the Junior Auxiliary (JA) of Houma, who partnered with SignGypsies owner Kelly Phillips to make the surprise possible.

WE SUPPORT A HEALTHIER FUTURE |

BY THIBODAUX REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY VITAL TO STAYING HEALTHY Did you know that as a child ages, physical activity dramatically declines? Children who are encouraged to lead healthy, active lifestyles early in life are more likely to continue that journey into adulthood. While exercise is a vital part of your family’s well-being, we often overlook the many emotional and physical health benefits of physical activity.

Always keep in mind not to overdo it. Exercise and physical activity should be fun, not hurtful. Starting with a less vigorous activity that builds in intensity and length over time is one of the best ways to encourage physical activity as a daily part of your family’s lifestyle. Exercising together while enjoying a balanced food plan supplies the muscles with wholesome, energetic life. Remember, be a role model! Children who repeatedly see parents having fun with different types of physical activity and exercise are more than likely to achieve a healthy lifestyle themselves.

Aerobic exericse can increase enthusiasm and optimism while reducing anxiety, tension, and depression. Aerobic exercise can also control weight and body fat reducing the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease later in life.

It is never too late to start! The Fitness Center, located in Thibodaux Regional Wellness Center, encourages family health and wellness through a variety of activities. Details can we found at www. fitnesscenterofthibodauxregional.com or call 985-493-4950 to learn more about opportunities to improve your health as a family.

Exercises like Yoga and karate, and a variety of sports such as archery and golf are muscle-strengthening exercises. These exercises increase muscle strength, endurance, and flexibility, improving the ability to fall asleep quickly and sleep well.

And this means...

CRAWFISH

SEASON(ING) The gods of the crawfish world, as well as the titans and furies and fates and muses and even the minor pond deities, have looked with favor over Louisiana this past year. All omens and prophecies and portents indicate that the 2020 season will be a good one. And as we mere humans enjoy the peak of the season this month, we reap the spicy delicacies of what the immortals have sown. Already, the devotional aluminum pots of reveling backyard bacchants are showing multiple layers of sacrificial burn marks. So, what makes 2020 a good crawfish season? Is it because crawfish are eating more decaying rice plants in the ponds? No, rather, it’s less how much they eat and more their motivation to eat. Crawfish get cold when it’s cold outside the tunnel, and when it’s cold they tend to slow down all activities—including scavenging for food. So a mild winter and preceded by nice, rainy seasons is what counts most. And crawfish do what many other animals do during kinda cold, kinda rainy times: They make babies. And the babies will eat and molt and eat and molt and eat and molt (three times, actually) until they’re large enough to leave the parental tunnel for the first time and enter the real world environment. Kinda like human kindergarten. And then they’ll eat and molt some more over the year (perhaps seven times) in the process of crawling and scavenging all over their environment, which sometimes involves a wire mesh trap that they can’t figure out how to get out of. Kinda like the rest of human life following kindergarten. And that’s when post-kindergarten humans in their slow-moving chalands figure out how to get the crawfish out of the traps and into net sacks and, ultimately, propane-fired pots. I doubt if the Greeks every had crawfish boils aside their devotional temples to the gods, but if they did I’ll bet it wouldn’t be much of a religious sacrifice. With readily available crawfish here in PoV country, Lenten Friday abstinence isn’t much of a sacrifice, either. It’s almost as if the rest of the week spent without crawfish is the real sacrifice. Crawfish alone, however, are not so appealing, except perhaps to egrets, big fish, college biology professors, and other crawfish. What makes the week between Fridays such a penitential time for humans is the flavor of crawfish. And for that, you gotta add some incense to the sacrificial fire, like the ingredients of Zatarain’s Seafood Boil: mustard seed, coriander seed, cayenne pepper, bay leaves, dill seed, and allspice. Alas, such spiciness isn’t for everyone. This following is a true story. In 1998, I spent two weeks studying gene cloning at the

April 2020 44 povhouma.com

famous Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island in New York. We were a group of about 20 from universities around the world studying the latest techniques. Among us were two young lady scientists from Sweden. In the course of conversation, I raised the issue of gene cloning in crawfish. “By the way,” I asked them, “Do people in Sweden eat crawfish like we do in Louisiana?” “Oh, yes!” one replied, with the other nodding in agreement. “We have cook-outs with our boyfriends where we boil the crawfish outdoors and then eat them along with a few beers.” Sensing a cultural connection, I inquired further: “How do you season the crawfish?” She replied, “We just boil them in water.” “Well, yuck!” I exclaimed inside my brain without using my mouth except to slowly smile at my next thought. “Let me send you some of what we use in Louisiana to season crawfish!” Enthusiastic for the offer, they shared their Swedish addresses. Upon returning home, I promptly visited the supermarket, buying two boxes of Zatarain’s Seafood Boil (one for each lady), and then the post office to ship the boxes off to the Nordic peninsula. How did they like spiced crawfish, you ask? It’s been two decades now, and I’ve not heard back from them since. Maybe it was the coriander. So, what can we learn from crawfish season this year? (1) Cook some crawfish for your family, and you too can be a minor pond deity—at least for the day. (2) Eat and molt. Enjoy life. Avoid cages of small mesh. (3) Keep stuff like cayenne and crawfish seasoning away from your eyes and other sensitive places like Sweden. (4) Always wash your hands as if you’re removing crawfish evidence from them. Like the spread of cayenne and crawfish fat, you’ll also stop the spread of viruses. POV

In south Louisiana Good Friday is often synonymous with eating crawfish. While you might the best crawfish dip recipe this side of I-10 or even be the reigning champion of your family’s crawfish boil competition, here are some facts that you might not know about our beloved mudbugs.

Crawfish can drown. Some species of crawfish can live for 20 to 30 years. Crawfish have specialized gills to breathe out of water. The official crustacean of Louisiana is the crawfish. We are also the first state to have an official crustacean. Crawfish walk forward and swim backwards. A crawfish’s exterior skeleton is made from calcium-rich chitin, which is similar to human fingernails. *Facts courtesy of TheOdysseyOnline.com
