PUTTING YOUR HEALTH FIRST When we think of health, we tend to think of things like our weight, our muscle tone, and our overall physical health. We might put a heavier focus on fitness, again in the physical sense. One of the aspects of health that is often overlooked is mental health.

anyone. No one is immune. Being healthy means taking care of your whole self, mind and body. Being able to recognize when things just aren’t as they should be, and seek help. If a bone was broken, you would seek immediate care – the same goes for a broken spirit or heart.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness in a year. Approximately 1 in 5 youth aged 13–18 (21.4 percent) experiences a severe mental disorder at some point during their life. For children aged 8–15, the estimate is 13 percent. 6.9 percent of adults in the U.S.—16 million—had at least one major depressive episode in the past year. I represent these statistics. I have been diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety. I was in my late 20’s when I had a mental break and spent a week in outpatient care to get the treatment I needed. I was 33 before I could get off the medication that allowed me to function. I was doing wonderfully, even through the birth of our son in 2014, no issues post-partum, and was showing no signs of needing to continue with therapy or seeing my doctor. Then in June 2017, John and I experienced a miscarriage. This devastating loss sent me into another downward spiral. I recognized the severe anxiety I was having and sought help. Loss is never easy, but I knew I needed an expert’s help. With therapy and the help of my psychiatrist, I am again on a positive path. Why am I sharing all this very personal information, you ask? To show that these mental health issues can affect

Our stories this month focus on more of the mind as well. We visit with Erica Howell, who did suffer from tremendous physical injuries when she was hit two different times by vehicles while out running. The only thing that wasn’t hurt was her fighting spirit. Read more about her journey back to health on page 24. Loss of a loved one is often a trigger for mental health. John LeBoeuf, aka Johnny Anomaly, lost his son in 2012. John has taken that loss, however, and used it as a catalyst for creativity. Through his own words, he takes us on his journey of Creative Coping and explains how he helps others that have experienced loss as well. Learn more beginning on page 52. The Health Issue also features a special section called “What’s Up, Doc?” In this special section, beginning on page 32, we introduce you to some of the area’s top doctors. I want to extend a special thank you this month to our Assistant Editor for the day, Cara Berry. Cara is going into the 4th grade at Saint Matthew’s Episcopal School. She joined our team to help create this issue. Look for her special POV Pick on page 50. Thanks, Cara, for bringing that special spark! POV

New Pain Treatment at Haydel Spine Pain & Wellness Center Haydel Spine Pain & Wellness Center is excited to offer a new state of the art minimally invasive treatment for lumbar stenosis. Dr. Michael S. Haydel specializes in minimally invasive spine procedures and is one of only five physicians in the entire state of Louisiana who is certified in this advanced procedure. Dr. Haydel is also certified by the American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians, Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice and American Board of Anesthesiology.

The procedure is Vertiflex, an indirect decompression system, FDA approved and covered by Medicare. It’s a new alternate treatment for lumbar stenosis, providing patients with a minimally invasive approach that puts your comfort and safety first, offering the only treatment on the continuum of care between conservative care and more invasive surgery. This treatment is especially helpful for older patients with significant limitation in walking distance due to pain, which is also relieved by sitting and resting. If you have leg/hip/glute/groin pain with standing or walking, which is relieved by bending forward at the waist and no more than two vertebral levels are involved, then you could be a candidate. This procedure requires only a 3⠄4-inch incision, takes about one half an hour to complete and is completed in an outpatient facility making it a favorable alternative in treatment. Clinical trials indicated 90% patient satisfaction through 60 months post procedure evaluation. They experienced 75% successful reduction in leg pain, which makes this procedure an excellent alternative to the more invasive options. This new therapy allows Haydel Spine Pain & Wellness Center to provide customized and optimal pain reduction or relief utilizing state of the art and groundbreaking minimally invasive healthcare, which can result in improved quality of life.

REHAB

What do you do to stay healthy in today’s fast paced lifestyle?

JUSTIN | ATHLETE

I think the most important thing is to get rest and to allow your body to recover. When you’re doing a lot, you need to set aside time for those cells to recover. That, and eating the right foods helps speed that process along, as well.

RANDI | ATHLETE

The Broadway’s Rehab to Home program is designed for short-term rehab stays that are goal-oriented.

I try and stay away from greasy or unhealthy foods and I make it a point to get my vegetables, fruits and goods that give you energy. With that, I also drink lots of water and low-sugar beverages and I exercise often – even daily, when I get the chance.

Our state-of-the-art therapy gym has segmented areas for optimum recovery. Active stimulation and functional exercises are included in our aggressive therapy program with the goals of:

LARRY | ATHLETIC TRAINER

I set aside time each day to work on my mental and physical health. I work out six days a week and read about something that interests me or a new topic every day. We all get burnt out, so it’s important to take time just for ourselves when we can.

While preserving the traditional exterior of their home, homeowners John and Kathy Sirois focused their attention on revealing the features of their 1974 home with a fresh perspective. Dark trim and cabinetry, outdated wallpaper and carpeting gave way to a light color palette. Old lighting fixtures were updated with custom lighting by Julie Neill Designs and Niermann Weeks. Artwork on display is primarily by New Orleans artist Tony Mose of Esom Gallery, as well

as a collection of antique paintings acquired over the years. Since 2010 the couple has enjoyed finding treasures for the house while antiquing. “We buy things we love that complement the style of the house,” shares Kathy. THE CALL FROM THE

SCHOOL NURSE The nurse calls at least once a week. Sometimes, it’s way more than once a week. I’ve joked with friends that Nurse Alicia calls me more than any of my friends.

Before you decide, talk to the Good Hands® people.

The phone calls vary: “Hi, I have _____ in the office, and she has an ant bite that really is hurting her.”

Now that you’ve moved into your new home, what’s next? Perhaps a new addition to the family. Or a new car or boat. Perhaps retirement. Talk to me soon about affordable insurance from Allstate to help meet the current and upcoming needs of your life.

“Sorry to bother you, _____ says he has a headache.” “Hey Mrs. Jaime, I have _____ with me, and he said his left elbow is really hurting.” I have a few standard responses that I have perfected when the nurse calls.

Call or visit me first for a complimentary protection review.

“Well, it’s almost the end of the school day. He/she will simply have to ride it out.” (That response is given if we are anywhere less than two hours away from the end of the school day.) If the child is given the phone, I have a few lines that I use time after time. “Hey honey. I’m so sorry that_____. I’m sure you’re going to feel better in just a little bit. Maybe try using the restroom and get a sip of water out of the water fountain.” (Because the water fountain and bathroom are a proven cure-all for any and all school related illnesses.) There’s a very special place in heaven for school nurses. Ours never acts at all irritated at the fabricated illness of the day. She’s even been known to give a child a Band-Aid or two if it looks like they’re having a really rough day. Because we all know Band-Aids are the gold star achievement of a visit to the nurse’s office in elementary and middle school.

With five kids in the same school, they have learned how to work the system, learned how to get a nurse referral and learned what might get mom to actually leave work and come get them from school. There was the time the school nurse called with one of the boys. She started with “Hey Mrs. Dishman…” and I knew it was serious. Her second sentence included the phrase “he told me how you gave him a concussion this morning.” She didn’t have to say any thing else. I stopped her mid sentence and let her know I would be on my way in just a few minutes. I knew he left my vehicle with his head hurt that morning, but I had no idea it could be called a concussion. So what happened was: Five kids unload five school bags, various band instruments, and five lunch boxes out of the back of my Suburban. On this particular day, one of my boys was still digging deep in the back of the vehicle to pull his trombone out and be on his way. 254574

The problem was this: I had NO IDEA he was still in the back of my Suburban. So I pressed the button to close the back of the vehicle at the same time as he decided to bring his head up. Door comes down. Head goes up. Collision is unavoidable. He cried a little, I gave him a quick kiss, and he’s on his way. Until the nurse calls, letting me know my son is telling the school his mom gave him a concussion earlier that morning! I flew to school in the same Suburban that inflicted the damage, worried about my poor precious boy. That suffering child slowly meandered out of the nurse’s office, convincing the both of us of the severity of his head trauma. We drove to my work, where I tell him he will have to lay on the couch for just a few minutes while I finish up paperwork, and then he can rest at home. But during those “few minutes” of paperwork, the miraculous happens. Head trauma is completely healed. He eats some candy. He drinks a Sprite (also a known cure-all), and it’s as though “the concussion his mom gave him” never happened at all. In fact, at his dad’s suggestion that they go get some spicy wings for lunch, his bouncing around my workplace convinced me of what I knew all along: the concussion was the most effective made up story and got me to school to pick him up quicker than any fever or stomach virus ever could. I might have laughed a little. But not without the warning: If you ever tell the school nurse your mom gave you a concussion to get me to come get you out of school, there will be no Sprite, candy, or restaurants for you. Once is funny. Twice is trouble. POV

jogged around the neighborhood. Jamie introduced her to Abby Tregre, another exercise enthusiast, and the trio got into the routine of meeting up and running together in the early mornings.

But an unbroken spirit.

Jamie and Abby’s goal was to run a marathon; Erica had no intention of joining them. However, after realizing she had trained with them enough to possibly accomplish this feat, she decided to run alongside her partners and signed up the week of the marathon.

If you met Galliano native Erica Callais Howell, you wouldn’t realize she went through such a traumatic incident one morning in January of 2018 that left her with the above-mentioned injuries. She credits her faith, family, doctors and community for her remarkable recovery, but two factors that undoubtedly are reasons for her rehabilitation are her perseverance and positive outlook on life. “I’m just blessed that I’m here. There’s so many more important things in life than dwelling on that one negative that happened in this case,” Erica shares. “That was probably the hardest time of my life, but it also led to my greatest accomplishments.” In a cruel twist of fate, it was accomplishing goals she set for herself that would eventually lead to her near fatal encounter. As part of their New Year’s resolution in 2016, Erica and her husband, Jonathan Howell, made a decision to pursue a healthier lifestyle. “When he and I first decided to do it on January 2nd, we actually came walk here on the Nicholls’ track, and one mile was a struggle, just walking,” the Thibodaux-resident remembers. “So little by little, I realized that I kind of enjoyed walking/running.” Erica began running in her neighborhood and eventually ran into a friend of hers, Jamie Rodrigue, who also lived in and

“That was, I think, an example of mental endurance, more than physical. I was surrounded by some great cheerleaders with Jamie and Abby, and we worked together to complete the marathon,” she says. “... The overall sense of accomplishment was amazing. It’s something, when I look back, that was never a goal and never thought that I would be able to accomplish. I’m proud of us that we were able to do it together. ” “The mental fatigue of it – committing to 26.2 miles – was definitely a window into the future,” she adds, “and the endurance that I’d have to continue as the journey progressed.” Her mental endurance was vigorously tested after the morning of January 30, 2018. Jamie and Abby decided to go exercise at a local gym, which lead Erica to run her route solo, at around 5:30 a.m. It was same route (from Brandywine Boulevard, to Kleinpeter Drive by way of LA 1, and back to Brandywine Boulevard) she had been running with the same essentials she always carried: a shoe light, reflective flipbelt, cell phone and MP3 player.

We believe I hit my head there,” Erica says. “... After this, unfortunately, that person did not stop. At some point I got up and remembered thinking that I needed to get home, that I was hurt and needed to get home.” Then, while she was incoherent and stumbling down LA 1 in an attempt to get home, a driver noticed something was wrong and pulled off to the side of the road to assist Erica. Another bystander stopped to help her as well, but this time it was someone she knew – Abby’s mother, Kathy Tregre. Unfortunately, even with those two trying to help her, another car coming towards the southbound lane of the highway struck Erica while she was wandering in and out of the roadway. That person did pull over after, however.

Kathy was able to identify Erica, who wasn’t carrying identification, and rushed over – after the scene had settled and Erica was being taken care of – to Erica’s

house to notify Jonathan. Fortunately, he was able to be alongside her as she was transported to University Medical Center in New Orleans – a decision made by the EMT’s on scene. “That medical facility had the ability to identify and fix my aortic tear. Most people that have that kind of tear unfortunately don’t make it because of time frame wise, the bleeding out,” Erica explains. “They were able to take me [to New Orleans], realize I had a tear, and pretty quickly – once they realized that was the injury – they were able to repair it without doing open heart surgery.” The doctors then had to also remove a blood clot that formed before they were able to stabilize her. With a total of two weeks hospitalized, multiple surgeries, a transfer to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center for more care and surgery, physical therapy, being out of work for six months and battling depression, it’s an understatement to say the months following the accident were challenging for Erica – who bears no ill

She persevered by remaining grounded in her faith and having an excellent support system consisting of her friends and family. Erica continues to achieve what has always been her main goal: to be there for her husband and three children, Ethan, Caroline and Camille. She finished physical therapy this past January. Although she currently is unable to run at the capacity she used to, earlier this year, she was able to be a running partner for Caroline during a 5K fundraiser for her school. To keep up with her healthy lifestyle, Erica found other ways to remain active such as yoga, pilates and Zumba. “Waking up with a purpose, every morning, I think helps,” she says for people going through different types of recovery and wanting to get back to their normal lifestyle. “Focus on the positives of each of your accomplishments every day...And you take it step by step.” POV

RAU PLASTIC SURGERY Hailing from Houma, Dr. Jeffrey Rau has proudly returned to open Rau Plastic Surgery and offer our community his expertise and sense of perfection. A graduate of Vandebilt Catholic High School and Nicholls State University, Dr. Rau is passionate about helping others through the artistry of plastic surgery and has extensive experience in breast reconstruction, hand surgery, facial trauma and aesthetic surgery. He founded Rau Plastic Surgery in 2017 as the sole surgeon, along with his wife Katelyn as aesthetic nurse. Specializing in breast reconstruction, Dr. Rau offers cancer patients a chance to feel whole again. “Whenever you get cancer, it morally just breaks you down, and from a woman’s standpoint for breast cancer, you’re having a part of what makes you a woman removed,” says Dr. Rau. Dr. Rau carefully walks each patient through the process and helps them to understand every aspect of their particular procedure and journey. “I go through all of this with every patient. I kind of cool their nerves down; it’s a lot to take in. So I say ‘It’s like when you bring your car to the car shop and it’s not working— Just tell us what’s going wrong, and we are going to fix it…You can just take a deep breath and know that you’re in good hands. We’re doing what’s in your best interest,’” he shares. Supporting the education of future doctors is important to Dr. Rau as well. He taught general surgery residency in Lafayette before returning to Houma. He is currently working with Nicholls to help organize a senior level course when it comes to shadowing and mentoring. He is also involved with mentoring our local Native American students in the high school system. “There are so many branches and fields that students should be able to understand and experience,” explains Dr. Rau. “It’s important if you like medicine or any

general field, no matter if you’re interested in nursing, or physical therapy or whatever, there’s so many different options you could do. There are so many branches coming out of med school and nobody really knows what they want to do. I think allowing students to shadow you helps everyone in the long run. Teaching helps me to stay on my toes too.” A creative mind and desire to be challenged are what led Dr. Rau to his particular branch of the medical field. “I thrive on being creative on getting lost in my craft,” he shares. “There’s an art to the procedures I do, to every technical profession. But plastic surgery, to me, just seemed more intense.” Katelyn Rau is a big part of Rau Plastic Surgery as well. As a trained and certified aesthetic nurse, she specializes in nonsurgical treatments such as injectables, peels, and mirconeedling. With subtle and appropriate treatments, Katelyn can assist patients in understanding their options when it comes to complexion and other skin issues. “Katelyn really helps our patients to understand that these procedures are not scary,” shares Dr. Rau of his nurse and wife. “Your overall appearance and your confidence are areas she enjoys helping our patients with.” Rau Plastic Surgery is offering free cosmetic consults during the month of June. Dr. Rau hopes to be able to have potential patients come in and visits, to help alleviate any of their anxieties or concerns. “It’s not about people being vain,” Dr. Rau shares. “How you carry yourself translates to your confidence level. We can help you no matter the problem. From someone who has beat cancer and is looking to reconstruct their breasts, someone who has completed a massive weight loss journey and wants their new body to be adjusted, or just basic cosmetic procedures to help you feel your best – We love to help people feel happy again.”

ADVANCED EYE INSTITUTE

DR. RICHARD ARCENEAUX

DR. EDWARD STAHEL

With over 40 years of practice, the completion of more than 40,000 cataract surgeries, and two locations in Houma and Thibodaux, the Advanced Eye Institute has been a leader in ophthalmology in South Louisiana. Founded by LASIK and Cataract Specialist Dr. Quentin Falgoust, the professional medical staff of Advanced Eye Institute is capable of handling all eye care needs from general ophthalmology, to cataract surgeries to optometry. Dr. Richard Arceneaux, a Board Certified Ophthalmologist, is able to successfully perform procedures such as blade-free LASIK; an advanced surface ablation; a refractive lens exchange; cataract surgery; laser cataract surgery; ORA system guided cataract surgery; micro-invasive glaucoma surgery and eyelid procedures, just to name a few. “We focus on the whole eye and the whole patient. And I think that's one of our trademarks here,” says Dr. Arceneaux, who received his M.D. from LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. “We just take care of the whole person, even though it's such a small space.” Having a love for science and people made him want to become a doctor, says Dr. Arceneaux. Nearly five years ago, after doing a residency in Alabama, the Covington native joined Advanced Eye Institute to be closer to home. The people who come in and out the clinic every day make his job interesting and fun and that’s what he loves most about his work. New Orleans native Dr. Edward Stahel — who has been with Advanced Eye since 2007 —leads the medical ophthalmology department of Advanced Eye Institute. He echoes Dr. Arceneaux’s sentiments about loving to interact with their patients.

DR. JONATHAN CARRERE

“And getting to know them, listening if they want to talk about some other problems…Trying to see if there is anything else going on that we should know about.” Also like Dr. Arceneaux, Dr. Stahel, who received his undergraduate degree from Loyola, joined Advanced Eye Institute to be closer to home. After getting a job in northern Mississippi following the destruction of his home on Mississippi’s coast during Hurricane Katrina, he and his wife, Kay, were looking for a way to make it back to South Louisiana. “I was just looking through a magazine one day and saw Falgoust had an ad,” Dr. Stahel remembers. “So my wife called the office and they said, ‘Yeah, you’re hired.’ And so that's how we came down here. It was close to home and, we liked it.” Dulac native and Vandebilt Catholic graduate, Dr. Jonathan Carrere is also returning home soon and joining Advance Eye Institute in August after finishing his residency in Mississippi. “I would say one of the things that stood out the most were the people there. My first time ever calling the clinic to set up an interview, the person I spoke with on the phone felt like family. Then everyone I've met since then were just super nice people” says Dr. Carrere on why he joined the practice. “They also have the best technology that you can ask for in an ophthalmology clinic. We have the most advanced top-of-the-line equipment for the specialized procedures we provide. ” With Dr. Carrere’s newly-learned innovative techniques and the talented experienced Doctors Arceneaux and Stahel, Advanced Eye Institute is sure to continue to be a leader in ophthalmology here in the Bayou Region for many more years to come.

“Dealing with the patients, making sure that their ophthalmological situation is good,” Dr. Stahel says he enjoys most about his job. 268 Corporate Drive, Houma | 985.879.2393 • 1101 Audubon Ave., Thibodaux | 985.446.0506

DR. ELENA MANN The joy of bringing new life into the world is what drew Dr. Elena Mann to the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

of Georgia. She completed her residency through Ochsner New Orleans before beginning her career in Houma.

“It’s just an honor to be a part of that experience with the family,” shares Dr. Mann. “Many times with OB/GYN, we deal with mothers, their sisters and their mothers. It ends up being a very good experience to be a part of that special time of a family’s life. And beyond that, when we look at back on the gynecology portion - to be able to help a woman in a way that affects her overall life and that of her family. It is a very intimate type of bonding experience overall.”

When she’s not assisting women and mothers in our area, Dr. Mann enjoys reading, cooking, traveling and spending time with her husband and three small boys. She has been working on improving her Spanish and teaching herself and her children sign language. Dr. Mann is also very active in our community, doing volunteer work with Hope Restored Pregnancy Resource Center, assisting with high school physicals, and being an active part of her children’s school, Saint Matthew’s Episcopal School.

Dr. Mann is a proud part of South Louisiana Medical Associates and practices at the SLMA Comprehensive Health Care Clinic in Houma. Originally hailing from Lyons, Georgia, Dr. Mann finished her undergraduate work at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans before returning to Georgia to attend the Medical College

“I want to continue to make a difference in the lives of women and families in the Bayou Region,” says Dr. Mann. “Not just through maintaining their health care and participating in their healthcare needs such as deliveries and gynecologic care, but also helping them as a whole family unit.”

AUTOBIOGRAPHY BY JOHN LEBOEUF AKA JOHNNY ANOMALY The effects of grieving can result in a variety of negative emotions including anxiety, stress, and severe depression that can lead to suicidal thoughts and actions, but for some of us who maintain these feelings, it can act as a catalyst for creativity. It is the art of sublimation, where PTSD meets creativity and we are left with the options as the author Nancy Springer would put it, to, “Conform, go crazy, or become an artist.” I chose the latter and it has been an incredible journey of hardship and healing ever since. It began in 2012 after the devastating loss of my son, Kaidon where my family was forever changed. It left us shattered and some days we are still picking up the pieces. Through this loss we know that silence has never sounded so loud, with the absence of our child. We have learned to adapt to this new form of reality, much like I would assume living without an essential limb. We have since then had two daughters, Zoe and Koralyn who bring so much joy into our life but despite a popular belief after having children after loss, they have never served as a replacement for our son. During that time, we had done our best to positively process our emotions in a healthy way but it wasn’t long before anger, bitterness, and resentment would ensue that would lead to many estranged relationships during this period. Instead of hitting the bottle or anyone else for that matter, I turned to spoken word poetry as a means to deal with my grief. Since then, this raw form of self-expression has brought me into classrooms, various venues, and The Jambalaya Writer’s

Conference to unite audiences with the art of storytelling. After independently releasing several spoken word albums, and self-publishing my first book of poetry in 2017 titled, “Fragments of a Broken Man”, I wanted to pursue a new artistic endeavor so in February of last year, I launched The Creative Coping Podcast without any real plan but to share my experience of post traumatic growth since the loss of our son. Since its inception, I have interviewed guests from around the country and abroad such as Australia and Switzerland who all share a similar theme — loss. I have also recorded episodes with my wife Jammie and our oldest daughter, Nevaeh. On the episode, “Marriage and Mental Health” Jammie shares some advice for other bereaved parents – those struggling to just make it through each day without their loved one. She affirms, “It’s okay to not be okay. If you need to cry, cry. If you need to scream, scream. If you need to have a day to yourself, have your mental break. Don’t feel bad for it. We all need it. Mental health is important and don’t be ashamed of it. Talk to someone about it.” The mind, like any bone can and will break under pressure and we know this first hand. What we are doing is trying to eliminate the stigma that surrounds mental health and give ourselves permission to grieve without judgment. This is just some of what is discussed during each episode of these candid conversations but it’s not all dreary and dismal, we have a lot of fun during our interviews. You can hear the compelling stories of individuals who have used their pain for a purpose by honing their craft and helping others along the way. We are reconstructing our lives and finding a new normal. Sometimes that means renewing our identity and finding who we really are. As Kelly Farley once shared on the show, “That guy you were before, you can’t go back to him, you know too much. That guy is gone and so what you have to do is figure out who the new you is and as soon as you can accept that, the easier

• D -Day (June 6, 1944) is the day more than 160,000 Allied troops invaded the beaches of Normandy, France during World War II.

• Many historians note that the ‘D’ in D-Day doesn’t actually stand for anything and say the United States military used the term to designate the launch date of the mission. However, others argue that the whole term is short for ‘departed date.’

• LIFE magazine’s Robert Capa risked his life to take the only still images that captured the battle. Director Steven Spielberg based his D-Day sequence in the movie “Saving Private Ryan” on Capa’s photographs.

•T he invasion, officially called “Operation Overlord”, was divided into sections of beachfront along the Normandy coast. Those sections were codenamed “Utah”, “Omaha”, “Gold”, “Juno”, and “Sword.”

PART 1

A few weeks ago, I found myself driving to Memphis for a meeting. The distance between Raceland and Memphis along I-310 North and then I-10 West and then I-55 North totals only five-and-a-half degrees of latitude on the map, but it takes a good five-and-a half hours to get there. That makes the drive about one degree of latitude per hour, which sounds quite slow. In fact, I told this smarty, geodesical fact to each radar-enforcing policeman along the way who ultimately stopped me for nothing more than a chat. Each of those chats worked out harmlessly, but, nonetheless, for that reason, it took a little more than five-and-a-half hours to get there. At more leisurely speeds, I had the opportunity to view lots of countryside and particularly how the countryside changes as I crept up the latitudes on my way north. For instance, just beyond Destrehan on elevated I-310, something caught the cones of my retina as I drove across the cypress swamps. Clusters of yellow-centered purple irises in full bloom sprouted up here and there across the ground between newly greening cypress trees. What a beautiful colorful image, I thought, as I imagined each of those purple flower clusters to be a close-knit iris family, much like the close-knit-ness of our extended families here in PoV country.

“The Suites is a place where love and compassion thrives. Their care of my mom for over 7 years was above and beyond my expectations."

SUSAN 220 Valhi Blvd. in Houma 985.868.8400 www.SugarMillPoint.net

I contrasted that notion of close iris families with another sporadic purpleflowering plant that I saw farther north along I-55 in the prairielands. Like irises, thistles sprout up here and there across the landscape but, unlike irises, they don’t cluster. Like the brother or sister or cousin you love to hate (or hate to love), each thistle plant stood alone and firmly upright with the prickliness of its leaves and stem and neck almost defying the notion of an extended family — or at least the notion of a foraging Cajun with an envie for chadron. Beyond the kind, familial iris and the prickly, individual thistle, I could imagine attitudes and dispositions of several other plants along the way. As I drove along I-55 through Mississippi, crossing towns like Benton and Yazoo City in the heart and soul of blues country, blues were literally sprouting from the earth along the roadsides. Millions of tiny blue wildflowers in the large grassy neutral ground between opposing lanes of interstate traffic intermingled with equally tiny yellow wildflowers and white wildflowers—each with petals no more than a few millimeters wide. It was clear that these tiny grass flowers loved to congregate in large numbers, seemingly carefree and enjoying the sunshine, cool breeze, and grassy freedom with one another. Groupies and grass and wildflowers? I wondered if I’d forgot to turn north on I-55 and ended up far West in San Francisco in the 60s. I heard the Twilight Zone theme in my head for a few miles. GIVE DAD

THE VIONIC DIFFERENCE! A harder plant can also cop an attitude on occasion. Take for instance Louisiana’s official state tree, the bald cypress. The bald cypress is well known as the guardian of much of the state’s lands, providing canopy and protection during leafy seasons for the myriad of other plants. But a closer look might help you understand why even termites find the company of cypresses distasteful. Unlike oaks and other hardwoods, cypresses tend not to grow too close to one another—as if they’re not fond of their own kind, even of sibling trees that developed from seeds of the same cone. In fact, they are more inclined to reach out and share their personal space with Spanish Moss, which is not really from Spain and not really a moss. A cypress tree would prefer to accept the identity deception of that dangling, good-fornothing, stringy parasite rather than touch branchtips with another of its kindred species. And beyond their apparently disgusted, untouching branches, a cypress will thrust out a network of bony knees—much like Golden State’s 6’10” Kevin Durant during a fall away jump shot—to keep nearby cypresses out if its space. When I see a slender, wrinkly-barked, bald cypress tree coated with moss and eagle dung towering over an illintentioned and harmful circle of hard knees, I think of a different kind of slender, wrinkly-barked, balding organism as he threatens you to make his day or to get off his lawn. When Longfellow wrote of “the forest primeval,” he might have been thinking of not-so-innocent cypresses—prime and evil. And there are other plants copping attitudes between here and Memphis out there on I-55 North. Stay tuned to read about them. POV
