World Metal News The concept of Deathfests is simple: to bring to the world the best and most extreme bands the underground has to offer. OUR SURVIVAL DEPENDS ON US• Sludge/Doom Metal from Austria
Interview with Thom
We just live our life and follow our inspiration Interview by Olga Schneider
So after 4 years of silence you have returned with the new album. How does the band feel right now? Are you satisfied with the work you have done? Oh yes, it`s a good feeling to unleash our thoughts and tunes! It was a period of renewal for us. During the last four years all of us were totally dedicated to give birth to the new album! We focused all our different energies and beliefs and brought it together to the next level. But we don’t think in time categories. Much more important is our love to any kind of art with a deep message, attitude and 8
a healing character. Music, painting, poetry, visuals, all these mediums are able to let us feel, to open our hearts, eyes and ears for what really happens every day in the universe. As we can see, the album includes only 4 tracks, but each of them lasts more than 10 minutes. Wasn’t there any feeling of chaos or anything like that while creating the album? I mean order of the parts etc, or you immediately feel what and where should be thanks to a common idea? We had some musical projects in the past, Neofolk/Singer/Songwriter stuff, and we
tried to implement those arrangements into that typically “OSDOU sound”. Galahad was the first song we started to compose. On Neudegg Alm, we had just finished the recordings of ‘Scouts...’ and a new song was in the air. Mucho sat outside with his acoustic guitar and figured out these acoustic tunes in the beginning of the song. That’s why Galahad is the opening track. When one album is beginning to come to life, then that always creates a transmission link for the next album. It was important for us to create this soundtrack feeling for the album.
That`s also the reason for that moderate climax and the narrative development. We don`t have a masterplan, we just live our life and follow our inspiration. The actual recording process began in 2017 with intense rehearsals at Neudegg Alm isolated from distractions. The most important aspect when you arrange is the character of the song. And of course it was a hard work to arrange such epic songs cause there is a risk to lose the arc of suspense. We are used to one another. Your latest creation really gets all the thoughts about reality out of head. It’s strongly associated to something connected with spirits, something from the other world, whatever you call it. What was your main source of inspiration? Artists always walk this thin line between insanity and wisdom, genius and crazy. In a way, there’s always a balancing act between perceiving oneself either as this low-class fucked-up person who never accomplished anything in life or a content man with his art and a collective that inspires him. There are many inspirations, mostly life itself but also books. Everything we read leaves an impression on us. Not all books have the right answers, especially when it is about mythology, magic, and religion, and it’s hard to filter out the false information.
A little bit strange question... Do you believe in the existence of something otherworldly? Well, our main priority was never just being musicians but also to bring out what’s inside us. That’s a must for us. Of course there is something otherworldly. And there is a ceremonial approach, because life is sa-
cred and holy. Music is the main tool of bringing this out of us, to transform and create and feel emotions, for the music to be as beautiful as possible. It can be an obsession in a way listeners enjoy this ceremonial approach of ours - it adds something many can relate to whether they like our music or not. There’s more than one reality and one truth. We live in this money-oriented world where it’s is drilled into us from
the time we’re in school to be a functional part of the system. The ceremonial approach is what makes the band real. All we understand that nature always inspires to create something, and since you live among mountains, it has a great influence on your creativity. So, what do you think…? Would your creativity be completely different if you lived in some metropolis? Or you suppose that the most important thing is what is inside you, and environment makes not so much in fact? We have this little homestead in the mountains, the Neudegg Alm, where we gather to celebrate our rituals. It is a place of peace and inspiration, where we meet so many fantastic people from all over the world, where connecting really works. You can have a short insight, watching our video “Gold and Silver“. So, yeah, of course, there is a strong connection between the artist and the environment. But there is so much more. It is also necessary to leave your hometown. We have seen the world, from the deserts of Libya to the Nordic ice sea. We did our drill and education. We know who we are and we are still curious. 9
OUR SURVIVAL DEPENDS ON US• Sludge/Doom Metal from Austria 10
Barth was a part of a completely different band for some years… Belphegor. At the same time he continued his activity in this project. Did it somehow affect both projects? Did he feel the influence of being in one project to
sition. There is so much 70s Brit-Folk, Classic Rock, spiritual Doom and Black Metal, Post Rock and dark Ambient, with a forceful metal sound. Our common roots are quite the same. But the musically and content approach is different and in the beginning
On our last album Helmuth did some stunning guest solo guitars and that`s a proof that music is the world’s only universal language, no matter what kind of style and genre. As it was said, your music is associated with something otherworldly, but at
another, and vice versa? At the beginning, our band was a raw, analogue piece of anger and pain. We started the band to celebrate an ugly, wounded sound. Rude Sludge Core and slow-rumbling Black Metal was our intention. With our new album we tried to made a timeless album in sound and compo-
it was a transition for Barth because OSDOU is a band in which every member is involved in composing. Barth`s input at Belphegor was important. He brought his visual aspects into the band and they are still part of the conception. Barth and Helmuth are brothers and it is always a blast when we share the stage.
the same time, it’s strongly connected with reality, reflections on earthly life etc. How do you manage to combine the incompatible? The common points between the songs are definitely the historical and religious components. Every one of these songs have a story or a base like in a novel or a poem.
These different stories are still relevant in this changing world, to our modern society. The morals are still as relevant now as the times when they were told. We try to find the points in between to connect the dots. The stories are what has been forgotten. Call it warnings from the past. This album is the soundtrack of these forgotten stories, to remind people what it is to live as a honest person, despite everything that happens. What is the main problem of modern society on your opinion? And how can that be caused? We live in the age of individualism. But there is a huge misconception. Individualism has become a referendum on political fatuity in which the modern society has become a staging ground for excuses deadness. Our society is populated by zombies. True individualism is no contradiction to pluralism; individualism isn`t even a sign of independence. Look at our `House Of The Holy” festival for example. It’s a
moving community-experience and also a recurring development effort. The human being is in root and base a social character. Let’s not forget the large number of people who are activists in their communities and workplaces - these individuals are the beating heart of our post-modern society, carrying out the only stable evolution-
a r i ly survival strategy. It’s a sociological process stronger than inherited norms and ideologies. This is what we call ‘human liberation’. We all have to decide what to do with the time that is given to us. What are your plans for the near future? I know that you’re going to take part in some festivals… Anything else?
We are looking forward to the next shows and the festival season. And of course we are curious how people react to our work. If you stop being curious or refuse to develop your point of view, your conviction, then your mind is unable to grow and your personality sticks into fear and damnation. So, let`s keep curious… The traditional question… What would you like to say to those who’s reading this interview right now and to our editorial board? Trust your feelings and instincts in more ways than you’re taught. Everything good in life tells us that there are more realities and truth out there, so follow that. May your survival instincts be with you!

Dark Tranquillity-Melodic Death Metal from Gothenburg, Sweden
Interview with Martin
Interview by Olga Schneider
You’ve recently returned from Russia, and it was your very first tour this year. So, how has the year begun for you? How does the band feel now? We are happy with the trip. We are blessed with a great audience in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine and it is always a pleasure to meet them. The Moscow show rivals the top shows we have done in support of Atoma. However, you aren’t going to tour so much this year. Is that somehow connected to your decision to concentrate
12
on the new album? And, by Can you do some spoilers the way, how is it going with and tell us a little bit what we that at the moment? should await from you this Yes, this decision is linked time? Are you going to do some experiments again or do you want back to your more traditional sound? It is a bit too early even for us to to our writing process. We say what will happen. First always take our due time we have to find the right vibe creating a new album and it to move us and then we exis a long strenuous process. plore deeper in that direction. We are right now in the be- But I guess as per usual: exginning, comparing ideas pect something familiar and and seeing what is what. yet - expect the unexpected.

By the way, about your traditional sound. There are so many talks about that among your supporters, but at the same time, each of your creations was so different from the others. What would you call your traditional sound? I do not want to label our sound but in my view we started to find the sound of modern DT around the time of Character, though everything is rooted in the eclectic albums that came before. So, the band evolves the whole time, and the audience does the same. Do you see any changes now, after so many years? Of course, the world around us changes all the time. If it would not I think it would be kind of sad. We do not want to be stuck going through the motions year after year. We are fortunate to still find new listeners while keeping our relationship to the old. How has world Metal community changed with time, in your opinion? Some people notice that a part of the community has become less dedicated, less hungry etc. Don’t you think so? What’s the reason of this tendency, what do you think? I do not think the community as a whole is less hungry. A few years ago I worried that might be the case. But as you mentioned before - the bands and the audience keep evolving to find new ways to communicate. When you are young and discover music you discover at the same time
yourself ”who am I, and what is the soundtrack of me?” But as you grow older you can still find passion and do things more deliberate and with a stronger purpose. Since we started talking about concerts… We haven’t seen Sundin on stage with you for so long. What happened to him? Shall we probably await that Johan Reinholdz will replace him perma-
nently? Niklas is focusing on his family. He is still involved behind the scenes but I doubt we will see him on stage anytime soon. While playing live shows, you always keep truly incredible contact with people who come to see you. Do you often communicate with your supporters out of stage? I mean ordinary human contact, social networks etc.
It happens. We try to be present, but at the same time it depends on the conversation and how you are approached. Most people are nice and then I hope we can meet them in the same way. Now we can see that Melodic Death Metal is slowly loosing it’s traditional sound and a lot of bands have a poor tendency to turn into something... Too «modern». What do you think about that and what’s the future of this genre? I think music has to evolve for any artist to keep them interested. Some people would say it is becoming too modern and some people would say bands are just rehashing old material. I think there will always be something for everyone even though it may not always be from the same bands. I know from watching my colleagues that any artist is doing its utmost to put the absolute best work out there. Now I just want to say thank you for this interview and for those incredible emotions you gave us not so long ago. Now the traditional question… What could you say to our editorial board and to those who’s reading this interview right now? Thank you all for your listening. Take care, and make your voices heard where it matters to you.

Vomitory - Death Metal from Sweden
Interview with Peter
Interview by Olga Schneider
First of all, we want to congratulate you on your anniversary. Time flies incredibly fast, and now the band is already 30. What has changed in the band and what has remained the same o v e r the years? Except for member changes things are pretty much the same, death metal and beer.
Next question was the most expected I suppose, but anyway‌ What forced you to leave your activity in 2013? I guess we all had different
it is really unexpected and triumphant! How does the band feel now, after so many years? We always remained friends, so in that case the is no difference, but the band feels reenergized since there’s no pressure to make new music etc, just play music and have fun. What made you come back? Was there any kind of main decisive factor?
If people loose their enthusiasm I guess that means the bands suck.
14
reasons but to put it simply we had just grown tired of everything. Yeah, it was a long break, but now you have returned, and
We rediscovered that we had and still have a lot of fun together. We know that after Vomitory’s breakup in 2013 Erik and Tobias decided to continue their activity in Cut Up. However, there wasn’t any news since 2017. What’s happened to the project? Cut Up is still active and they are writing new music that’s going to slay everything else! Now when you’ve returned, what can you say about modern world Metal community? How did it change, in your opinion, which of the changes are positive and which ones are negative? To be honest I’m really bad at following new music and new bands and the metal community in general, but one thing that I think is positive is that the metal festivals seems to be going strong. Don’t you feel that nowadays some part of Metal audience have become less hungry or anything like that? What kind of factors make people loose their enthusiasm? Oh man, I haven’t been to a metal show in years, but if people loose their
enthusiasm I guess that means the bands suck. Do you plan to create some new material? If you do, what should we await? Following your traditions or something
completely different? No plans for new music. What do you think, what will help you to prevent a breakup in the future? Well, the plan is to play only during 2019 since it’s our 30:that anniversary. After this year we will just have to see if we return to our grave or not. What’s the fate of world Death Metal after some 30 or 50 years, following current tendencies? I have absolutely no clue. As long as it is aggressive music, I think it will be just fine. At the end of our conversation, I’d like just to wish you good luck and keep fire burning in your hearts! What can you say to our editorial board and to our readers? Thank you and come see us on the road in 2019 if you have the chance, it might be your last one.

Interview with Nicolas
Lloth-Hellenic Black/Death/metal from Athens•Greece!
I love music from a very small age and it is my life.
Interview by Olga Schneider
Not so much is known about your band’s history, its creation etc. Tell us more details about it all. LLOTH is a Hellenic Black/Death Metal band founded in 1995 by Tristessa of ASTARTE, that carries on by her husband and later Astarte member Nicolas SIC Maiis on vocals, Setesh on guitars and backing vocals, Vaelor on guitars and Panthimis on bass. The band later renamed to Astarte the first all female black metaland the rest is history.
As we know, you reunited again after the terrible tragedy in 2014. We all understand that it was incredibly hard, but however, you didn’t give up. What motivated you to move on and continue to create music? We have never stopped
the Lloth band. We just had as priority the Astarte. We have done some lives through years with Rotting Christ, Inveracity, Septic Flesh etc. Music is also my passion and I did not want to stop something that we start with my wife Tristessa. Music is healing me from inside and give me strength. Was there any moments when you wanted just to give up? What stopped you at moments like that? As I said, I love music from a very small age and it is my life. It is a way of living and a kind of soul therapy for me.
Do you still keep contact with the past members of Astarte? No there is no reason for that after Tristessa was the leader of the band. How did you take the decision to give the original name back to the band? Lloth is a different band from Astarte in style and music so there is was no problem with that. The band was founded 1995. How did Black Metal develop in Greece at that time? What bands inspired you? In that moment Greek black metal have several good bands like Rotting Christ, Necromantia, Varathron etc. Tristessa’s main influence was Limbonic Art and lot of classic heavy metal bands. Were there any differences between Greece and Western Europe where Black Metal was born for that matter? Was there the same hype or anything like that?
Greek scene is more melodic and sad than the other scene. They had a hype d u r i n g 90’s with the events at
Norway and Sweden but Greece have a unic tradition to black metal worldwide. What are your plans right now? Do you think to record anything new? We are preparing with the band the pre-production for the new album and we will enter to the studio soon enough! We also planning to do some lives shows here in Greece. The last question. What would you like to say to our readers and editorial board? Thank you very much for the invitation to speak with your readers and never forget that music is our life!!! Spirit in black till the end!!!

Interview with Darianth
Andartar-Black Metal from Hungary!
We always try to find new opportunities to show our performance.
Interview by Olga Schneider
I really wanted to talk with you and tell our readers about a wonderful band, which, unfortunately, is little known among metalheads. It is necessary to correct the situation and tell the world about the Hungarian band Andartar. So let’s get started. Your band has existed for 10 years, but during this time you have released only one EP From the Ashes and recently you released the first full-length album Humaninfection. Why did this happen? Wasn’t there enough material to release the album before? Darianth: Hello, first of all thanks for the opportunity! Although the band first line up was formed in 2009 it was really amateur without experience we had only few gigs with it and we split up in 2011. But in the background
I continued to write songs and lyrics to the Andartar. In January 2017 I found Damon (guitar) and Inferus (drums) to create the new powerful line up. I had a vision about an agressive black metal with melodies and theatrical performance. So we had a big break between 2011 and 2017 that’s why we didn’t release albums in this period. Since than we have been working together we released our first EP in December 2017 and the first full lenght album in November 2018. After the recording of the album Negation (session - bass) joined the band in the summer 2018. When I heard the Humaninfection, its music captivated me from the very first notes. It is immediately obvious that the musicians put their hearts into the creation of their first album.
Tell about your album: what is its concept, what did you want to tell the audience about? I will not speculate, I would like to hear about Humaninfection from the author. Darianth: I am glad to read you feel like this! This album is about the humanity’s appearance in the Earth and the harmful effects of the mankind. The nature created the human race and gave a world them to improve themselves and create marvellous things but instead of this we just destroy everything around us. Our mind has infected by religion, selfishness and greed. We deserve to die but I don’t know what will happen first: we’ll kill each other or the nature’s rage will rave the failed creation. Your album was released in both Hungarian and English, as well as the first EP From the Ashes.
This principle is clear to me, you wanted to please the metalheads of your country and at the same time declare yourself to an English-speaking audience. Did that make certain difficulties in recording two versions at once? And in what form do you implement physical media - two versions at once in one box or are these two separately sold disks? Darianth: Yes, you’re right basically I write the lyrics in our own language I think it’s really colourful language and it’s quite easy to express my thoughts on different ways. The other reason I guess the Hungarian audience can feel and understand the message of the lyrics more easily. And of course the English version has been made for everybody else. It wasn’t difficult to record the songs in two different language the only thing what was a bit difficult to translate every lyrics to those don’t lose
the meaning. We released our materials in 3 panels digipack with 2 cd-s. We wanted to keep the materials in a box but seperate the versions. And as an advertisement, I would like to indicate links where anyone can purchase both physical media and the
digital version. And a few words about it from the first person. Darianth: Actually everybody can order the physical form from the band’s facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/andartar/ But the album is available on the online platforms as well like: Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2Ffo5AZ Deezer: https://bit.ly/2JPgJCA Itunes: https://apple.co/2JPAjyR
The Humaninfection / Ébredő enyészet album recorded and mixed by the MMP Studio. It has released by the Hungarian Nail Records. The graphics made by the Mayhem Project Design. We had to wait a long time to everything be ready but we are really satisfied with the result. As far as I know, m o r e than half of the b a n d l i v e s abroad. How do you manage to get together and how difficult is this process? How often do you ever get together at rehearsals or maybe drink beer in your favorite bar? Darianth: Yeah Damon lives in Finland and I live in England. Negation has moved back to Hungary recently. This makes our situation difficult but I think we can solve this problem very well. 19
Andartar-Black Metal from Hungary!! 20
If we are lucky we can practice together once or twice before the gigs but mostly we practice only individually at home. This is not the best way but we have to sacrifice a lot of things to do this. This is not a hobby for us this is passion. Of course if we have some free time after the rehearsal we drink few beers but we have prepare o u r selves for the tours. T h e
p a s t year and the beginning of the New Year brought you some interesting gigs. What can you say about this? Was it the beginning of your live performances or did you already have experience? Darianth: We played before the Andartar in different bands too so we have experience about the live performances but now we use a lot of technical things so we need to prepare many ac-
cessories before the gigs. We always try to find new opportunities to show our performance. In the last year we had chance to play in Russia. This was really good experi- ence we didn’t know w h a t w e
can expect b e cause we have never been there and we are not too famous band. But we weren’t disappointed the audience was awesome in Moscow and in Tula as well. I hope we will return in the future. But besides Russia we were in Slovakia few times and we carried on the shows in Slovakia and Romania in this year.
I like to go to different places because I can meet metal fanatics who appreciate and support the underground music styles. Without them we could play in the rehearsal room. The next concerts will be in Czech Republic in this weekend this will be the first time to play there too we can’t wait it! Do you
plan to tour Europe to promote your new album? And how are you going to celebrate your decade? Darianth: As we talked about our situation it’s quite hard to harmonize the band’s and the band member’s things but we try to promote the album on every way as we can. We would like to record a video clip to the album and we have some dates to this year probably this number will grow.
But we have many new ideas, riffs so we would like to start to write the new songs in the second half of the year. The only thing what I celebrate I found proper persons to make my thoughts about the band real. You can be seen and heard in Valter Zoltán’s band called Sectioned. In my opinion, you have a wonderful alliance. How did you get into his band and why only on vocals? The video of Death shall impressed me. The new Sectioned album will definitely have success. Darianth: Zoltan looked for a vocalist to his project in the last 3 years but he didn’t find the right person. After many tries he was so disappointed. Damon and Zoltan are friends and when we released our first album Zoltan asked him about me because he liked my vocals on the album. After that he contacted and invitated me to record a video clip and later a full album as well. I have already known his project and I liked it so I wanted to help him. I think the new material will be stronger than his first album. So I accepted the invitation I enjoyed the recordings and I
think the result is awesome! We are going to start the vocal recordings to the whole album in
the end of April. How would you characterize Extreme Metal scene now? Do you think it is developing now or can you see some fall? Darianth: This is a difficult question. I think recently the people - especially the younger people - has got different priority than 15-20 years ago. I re-
member when I was teenager we always went to the underground gigs even when we didn’t know about the bands. There was interest about the live music shows. I always tried to collect my money to buy concert tickets. Nowadays as I can see the people’s interest is different, the other thing is the internet they can find anything on it even they don’t need to stand up from their chair. That makes them lazy to move and pay for the underground events. Although this way is one of the most important to support the underground/extreme metal scene. I think now the interest about the underground bands is much lower (except the old and famous bands) than before but maybe there will come a new generation what will appreciate the live music and the musicians. The traditional question… What would you like to say to those who’s reading this interview right now and to our editorial board? Darianth: Support and keep the flame of the underground musics alive! I hope we will meet on the festivals, gigs! Hail!

Interview with Roy
Dominanz-Industrial Black Metal from Norway!!
Metal is not dying, it´s changing.
Interview by Olga Schneider
So, the band was founded in 2006, when Metal was already quite popularized and there was already kinda competition among bands. However, you have achieved quite a lot fame. What did help you in that and how did your history begin in general? The band started as a solo project, I had already made material for almost a full album. And on a trip to Poland I asked Jørn (our former guitarist) and Frode to join forces with me. I think that common music taste and the fact that we came from a very similar musical background made
it easy to work together. We have always tried to make the music that we all love, resulting in something with a dark and catchy feel. Decades ago, Black Metal got its colossal hype wave. You are one of the representatives of the style that combines two seemingly incompatible genres – Black Metal and Industrial Metal. Even if you were not the first ones, is your music some kind of protest against massive and more popularized Metal genres? Absolutely not. We are still fan of many of the bands that saw the day of light at the
end of the 80’s beginning of the 90’. As I said in the previous question, we have always tried to make the music that we all cherish, resulting in something with a dark and catchy feel. Therefore it just felt natural to add some new aspects to our music. -What were your main inspiration sources when you started your activity and what is that now? The main theme of the lyrics is about suppression and exercise of power. I have been inspired of my visits to Auschwitz, Birkenau and the KGB headquarter among others.
The lyrics is not specifically about what happened in these places, but it is fiction that deals with oppression, torture and abuse of individuals and peoples. I also read the Old Testament before I wrote the lyrics for the upcoming album. So some of the songs are inspired by those fairytales. Another inspirations source is the horrifying abuses begotten by Catholic priests for decades. All in all I think of our music as doomsday metal! You live in Bergen, and Bergen is one of the cities which are the most famous for its Metal activists, creators etc, especially for the past events. Is that kinda spirit still felt there now? It’s definitely not the same as it used to be. Garage, one of the bars that metal heads used to meet at, and arranged a lot of concerts, was shut down last year. We still have a yearly metal festival, Beyond the Gates, who attracts people from all over the world. And this year’s lineup is absolutely amazing if you ask me! There are still a lot
of unique and great bands from Bergen, and new are coming. So hopefully Bergen will be the capital for extreme met-
al for years to come! Now tell us in a few words about your new album. How much time did the creative process take? On this album we have gone more back to our Black Metal roots, but at the same time we try to keep our atmospheric signature. This album is even more guitar based then the
previous. Almost every song has a guitar solo, and in my opinion it’s slightly more aggressive than Noxious. “Let the Death Enter” released March 22. We used over a year composing the music for Let the Death Enter. And at the beginning of 2017 we entered Øystein G. Brun’s Crosound Studio. We almost used a year on the recording and mixing process before we all were satisfied. Has anything changed for you for so many years? I mean everything: creative process, your approach to that, your main philosophy etc? Most of the songs for Noxious me and Jørn wrote together. The process was very different from this one. Me and Jørn has been friends for many years and we lived 50 meters from each other at that time. So it was easier to meet at my place, have some beers, and make some music together. For Let the Death Enter, me and Luis have written the music. 23
Dominanz-Industrial Black Metal from Norway!! 24
Some of the songs we have written together, but the situation is quite different from the process with Noxious. For this one he has either written his songs by himself or he has sent me a theme or a riff and I have continued the process at my place. In general I always want to approve and make better music. I hardly never get satisfied with anything. And there are always new inspiration sources in a destructive world! What are your further goals at the moment? The lineup has again stabilized, and we are starting to gestate new material, but at the moment Let the Death Enter is taking a lot of our time. New blood equals new impulses, so I´m pretty sure our sound and imagery will take another turn for the next epos. I have already more or less 3 songs ready, and I guess Luis have a lot of material to work with as well. We are also planning a few shorter tours later this year. We have a steady fan-base in the eastern parts of Europe, and we are looking forward to serving them another defiled morsel of antagonism. Other than that we
hope to conquer new grounds, and keep building our dominance in countries like Switzerland, Spain and Italy among others, with both live shows, and our highly anticipated first
vinyl-release. There’s a point of view that Scandinavia is one of the best places in the world for creating this kind of music. Do you feel like that while living there? Or do you see more competition since Black Metal is so popularized in Norway? Much of our cultural heritage is closely linked to current metal culture, and it is so common with metalheads headbanging in all ranges of society, that we really don’t stick out any more. Even the damn suits love metal – there’s money to be made in it, just look at Dimmu Borgir. Yeah, we should probably get us some suits to get in on that…
What do you think, what’s the future of Extreme Metal in Norway and around the world? Metal is not dying, it’s changing. Evolving. It has to, otherwise it would already be dead. Painkiller by Judas Priest or Fuck the Universe by Craft are fantastic albums each on their own, because they renew, reinvent or reinvigorate something. But it is pointless to simply remake these albums over and over, and not try to improve or develop. There will always be purists who mistake this change for death. Dominanz are hardly inventing the wheel, nor are we reinventing steel. We make and play music that is manifest of the moods and emotions within us, and distills our views of the world. It is up to you to decide wether this is killing or perpetuating the genre. The traditional question. What could you say to our readers and to our editorial board at the end of that interview? I would like to encourage everyone to check out both our previous album Noxious and our forthcoming album Let the Death Enter. If they like what they hear, we greatly appreciate if they buy a copy or stream it a million times.

There are more instrumental passages than on ‘Valkyrja’ (2013), and there are a lot of guitar and bass details,» states guitarist/vocalist Heri Joensen. «I really feel we’ve realized the vision we set out to create all those years ago, and as I listen through the album, I am satisfied with every aspect: the epicness, the intricacy, the melodies and harmonies, and the sheer heaviness of it. Hvisl Stjarnanna Icelandic Black Metal titans Sinmara return with their highly anticipated sophomore album ‘Hvísl Stjarnanna’, released on CD, LP and digital through the veritable German imprint Ván Records. A monument to the group’s namesake dark sorceress goddess, keeper of the baneful sword Lævateinn, ‘Hvísl Stjarnanna’ is bound together thematically by myths relating to sirens, ghosts and malevolent spirits beckoning from beyond. To heed the whisper of the stars is to be transfixed by a dreamlike connection and melancholic yearning for the realm beyond the stars, to be guided by the mediators between the world of the living and the nightside of the dead.
Musically the album sees the band further progress the style previously touched upon on their latest MLP ‘Within the Weaves of Infinity’ which saw the band infuse their chaotic and forceful Black Metal with a melodic richness which harkens back to traditional forebearers of the Scandinavian style. On ‘Hvísl Stjarnanna’ Sinmara reveals a mournful and nostalgic atmosphere and soundscapes steeped in more grandeur than they’ve crafted to date, but yet showcasing serpentine harmonies permeated by the same malefic venom as has come to be expected of the band.

Asphodelus Doom/Death Metal band from Finland released the album Stygian Dreams February 15th, 2019. This album contains seven songs of sorrowful ‘Gothic’ Doom/Death Metal of the gloomiest kind. This forlorn manifesto showcasing the band as one of the most interesting acts in the genre today. The Finnish trio music formula comprises early Katatonia, Anathema, My Dying Bride and Tiamat influences, yet keeping a distinctive feature in their sound. Don’t be fooled by the somewhat clean riffage and melodic solos, they are just a wishful thinking before the whole thing sink down again in the gloomy pit. Harsh and melancholic screams enhance the hopelessness of the whole thing, throwing tuneful keyboards in their desperate sonic cauldron, heightened by a good hint of finnish renowned “masennus” (read, depression). Drawing on a wide range of influences in particular black metal as well as death metal, thrash and hardcore to create an atmosphere which is more claustrophobic, savage and intense than ethereal, Antre is a representation of the inner dark place in all of us, the dark cave in our souls and the anger and rage that manifests itself there. The latest gig of Dark Tranquillity in Moscow. First of all, I have to say that I’ve been their

supporter for almost 10 years and that was their second concert in my life. These pioneers of Swedish Melodic Death
Metal have always been experimenters, but they’ve always been associated with high quality material and cold atmosphere.
And it gets just more when you see them live. The hall was completely filled with people, and I’m truly grateful to that dude who let me stay in the front row. The show started with Encircled from the latest band’s album called Atoma, and from the very first notes there was not a single person left who just stood and calmly gazed. And it was only
also a sad moment: we didn’t see Niklas Sundin on stage for so long, and this show a l s o

Despite the fact that the tour had been announced as dedicated to the latest release, half the set was dedicated to the b a n d ’ s classical things. So that’s w h y e v e r y o n e was satisfied. Both experiments lovers and those who wanted some nostalgia, including me, got their dose. Yeah, many of their songs are connected to some moments from the far or near past, to great times and bad ones, and I must confess that I got tears in my eyes during such things as Forward Momentum,
a fukking warm-up. I must say that Mikael Stanne has really wonderful energy and he continuously gives this energy to the audience. Forever young and always dedicated. But concerning the members, there was

Our Survival Depends On Us was founded in 1999 and still stay known just among c e r t a i n community. On one hand, it seems a little bit u n f ai r, s i n c e s u c h d e d i cated a n d hard-working bands who always such for new sound deserve more attention, but on the other hand... If you know them you might understand that this kind of music is understandable definitely not for everyone. Their first albums of the band sound really like music of other members of that genre. Music full of sadness and nihilism, angry but magnificent at the same time. But now this is a competely different band. Their new album Melting the Ice in the Hearts of Men was released in February 2019. It includes just 4 tracks, but each of them lasts about 15 minutes. Yeah, that fukking moment when you have so much
54
to say but you can’t do it endless. I must say at once that this music doesn’t fit as background while you’re doing something else. You definitely need some special mood end even environment to immerse yourself in that. The dudes have become eternal experimenters with that release. They skillfully combine acoustic and heavy parts of their music, mundane and otherworldly, insanity and wisdom... This is a truly incredible mix of Metal and some kind of spiritual music, nihilistic and desolate parts smoothy pass into lifeaffirming ones and vice versa, the supermundane is strongly connected with reflections on earthly life. The cold
atmosphere of the whole album drive a listener into a trance, but at the same time kindle fire inside the main motor. So, if you like something unexpected and dig absolutely crazy combinations in music, this band is highly r e c o m mended to you. And again, so much to say, but words cannot describe anything so exactly.
The Nomad hail from Russia and they are labelled as “metalcore/ melodic death metal”. At this point, you should probably start wondering if I am going to bash the band to bits and pieces, but I will try to have a more in-depth stab at it. Surprise, surprise. I have no idea if I make it through to the end, though. It starts off with a nice, short introduction that builds up the atmosphere - you can even hear some keyboards in the background (not Children of Bodom-typeof-keyboard, fortunately!). When done with the intro, the real party gets going. The Nomad seem to have all their pieces in the right places and the machine rolls over your body with well-structured
songs and nice hooks every now and then. They hit the ground running from start to finish (with a little break in the form of acoustic-oriented “Atomic Shadows”). The most notable song that I can name off the top of my head is definitely “Simulated Brain” (guest appearance by Antti Warman on lead guitar). I had this album with me during my last workout session at the gym and it worked perfectly in that environment. The music just flows, there are no
cracks that would hinder the listening experience. That is actually the album’s biggest virtue and the biggest flaw at the same time. It is not fresh, you have probably heard the same riffs like a thousand times before, but it still gives you plenty of groove, for what it’s worth. I know little about metalcore or melodic death and if I had to point to one major influence that I hear in between the lines here, I would definitely go for Arch Enemy. Or more melodic version of Heaven Shall Burn and Caliban. It is not the most cutting-edge release you will hear this year, but believe me I have heard worse. It does not do much, it is just there in the background. The Nomad, however, are on their right track and you can hear it gives them lots of fun while playing those tunes. An average melodic death metal fan will enjoy, the rest will pass.

thrown in for a good measure. And I used the word “good” since I am being nice here. None of the songs sticks out, there is nothing memorable, the vocals are forced, the melodies are as exciting as watching the paint dry. I cannot elaborate more on Beyond the Existence because I do not feel like it. If you, however, like your music well-produced but boring as hell, then this band will be right up your alley. I just recommend not wasting time when there is lots of other bands out there which are far superior. Use this disc as a coaster, it will at least have some purpose

I had never taken notice of Beyond the Existence before I got this album to review, and after having listened to “Thoughts Through Imagination”, I am pretty sure I will keep omitting this band in the future. Honestly, I am not the right person to review “gothic death metal” since whenever I see the word “gothic” before the word “death” I usually cringe. It is not my kind of metal at all. Nevertheless, let’s give it a fair chance. Or any chance at all. These guys come from Greece and they sound nothing like country. It is a blend of melodic the bands I love from that said death metal and some gothic parts

Now it’s time to do some spoilers, and this time it’s about Uburen, a Black Metal band from Rogaland, Norway. The band was formed in 2010 and yeah, they still stay in underground, but I suppose many of you already heard about them, especially if you’re from South America, since they’ve got very high popularity there. As for me, I learned about this band when they came to play a show in my city 3 years ago, so yeah, nowadays they’re my good friends, but despite that fact, I’m trying to be honest about everything, and no, this is not any try to promote the band. The dudes perfectly do it themselves. Some weeks ago, I got stuff from the new album they’re going to release in April. So… If you have ever heard something from them before, it will be easy to notice that the band is still developing. The quality of sound is growing with each album; the stuff itself is getting more
56
and more memorable. And if while listening their first works you might have got an impression that this was just one of many unremarkable bands, things have changed so much now. They’re still actively working on their own uniqueness, and their upcoming creation called And The Mountains Weep already allows us to separate them from a huge number of such bands. This are typical Norwegian Black Metal riffs, so you’ll probably get some kind of nostalgia while listening to that… And it gives hope that the traditions of this genre will be kept, and that’s really cool that such bands exist in this world. I mean, there’s a lot of bands who are trying to be kinda copies of the pioneers, but eventually their tries look and sound ridiculous. But that’s not this case. When you follow the traditions of the genre but at
the same time you bring something of your own, you get a completely different effect. Sorry, out of the main topic now… So… The pace is constantly changing from erect to melancholic and vise versa, but always makes your heart beat faster, and the main reason is… Vocals!!! It’s hysterical but full of power, and it can’t be confused with anything else. Lyrics are made in English, but sometimes the dudes use their native language, and, moreover, some parts of the songs are made in their dialect they use in everyday speech. And again, about sound… Yeah, as it was said, this is typical Black Metal, but the quality can’t be called raw at all, and I think this is a great progress for that band. A big thanks to Bior for provided stuff.
Saarkoth play atmospheric black metal - not very fast, not very slow. A pace good enough for your Sunday long walks through the woods when you are accompanied by all the negative emotions that arose when your girlfriend had split up with you and you no longer have a hand to hold (crying at the end of “The Wanderer” might put you in the foul mood if you are soft). The 7 songs (plus 2 intros) clock in at
exactly 44 minutes, which is just enough not to make you want to slit your wrists. I highly appreciate the fact the keyboard is not up in front but hidden in the background - at least it does not make the band look stupid like all the other symphonic/atmospheric black metal bands out there. The atmosphere, however, is warm despite being generally desolate. The songs are dreamy, very melodic, not that badly produced (the drums could have been better, though), and melancholic - perfect word to describe Saarkoth’s output. They lay down cohesive atmosphere
throughout and present the band’s attempt to show the best side of the magical forest or whatever the sing about. If the lyrics turned out to be inspired by Tolkien, I would not be surprised in the least. I am not very keen on giving it more spins than I already had to, but I know there is lots of forest folks to fully enjoy the band’s potential. I get some vibes og Agalloch and very distant echoes of Summoning, so if you like your black metal “mystical”, then grab the CD or stream it on Spotify.

I do believe Saarkoth does not ring any bells to you at all. The UK newcomers released “Jera”, their debut album, in 2018 and a demo before that. Not very impressive back catalogue, so it means they have to be good to land a record deal this quick, right? Let’s find out.

Månegarm is a Swedish Viking/pagan metal band that started up in Norrtälje, Sweden, in the end of 1995. Being one of the first bands to incorporate traditional instruments like violin and flute but also female vocals in the music, Månegarm is a pioneer and one of the longest lasting band in its genre. On Fornaldarsagor, Månegarm invite us to a journey through long-lost ancient times. Eight new tracks breathe new life into sagas and tales from a prechristianized, pagan era that made Scandinavia into what it is today – and those sagas have now been wrapped in exciting viking metal. Warm violin interludes infuse most songs, lend an epic character to frostclad metal tunes and fuel the listener`s imagination. Fornaldarsagorna turns out to be the most multi-faceted and uncompromising piece of concept art the Swedes forged so far and will feed the flames of heathen fires for a long, long time… Line-up: Erik Grawsiö - Vocals, Bass Markus Andé - Guitars Jacob Hallegren - Drums Fornaldarsagor will be released on April 26th, 2019.

Defragments Of Insanity’ is the rerecording of Necrodeath’s second album ‘Fragments Of Insanity’, originally released in 1989. This new version succeeds in keeping the original brutality and dark mood of the album intact, yet with the very distinctive approach of the current line-up of the band, the longeststanding in Necrodeath’s illustrious career. Defragments Of Insanity’ follows the release of ‘The Age Of Dead Christ’, the latest collection of original material for Necrodeath, the 11th in their career, 33 years after their inception into the scene. Considered a cult classic for decades, ‘Fragments Of Insanity’ is the quintessential Thrash/Black Metal album, an album that influenced many bands over the years and has been praised by fans and artists alike. And this new version will give younger fans a chance to own a piece of history that was no longer easy to find. Norwegian black metal band, Kampfar, will release their new album, Ofidians Manifest, on May 3rd via Indie Recordings. Ofidians Manifest represents Kampfar anno 2019. 25 years on from their foundation, only willing to release new music if they felt it would surpass all they had done before, it is a condensation of the immense struggles of the last few years. Everything that has been hidden behind the music and the live performances is laid bare, though told in the only way the band can portray themselves, through songs. It is immensely honest yet wrapped in their own folklore, the snake tongues splitting every truth into two deeper truths, every word sung dominated by the weight of all those sung before. Lineup Dolk - Vocals Jon Bakker - Bass Ask - Drums, Vocals Ole Hartvigsen - Guitars
On May 3rd, Amon Amarth will release their 11th full-length, Berserker, via Metal Blade Records (North America)/Sony Music (International) Comprising 12 monstrous heavy metal anthems that bulge with irresistible melodic hooks, bursts of thrilling savagery and moments of spine-
tingling dynamic drama, Berserker is the result of the huge surge of creativity and a collective desire to keep moving forward with no compromise. From the disarming melodrama and explosive riffing of opener «Fafner’s Gold» and the brutish simplicity of the rampaging «Crack The Sky» to the epic fury of «Raven’s Flight» and the grim, gritty storytelling of «Ironside» and «Skoll and Hati», Berserkeris an album full of trademark Amon Amarth bluster
and bite but with every aspect of the band’s sound somehow refined, sonically enhanced and made vastly more potent, both in terms of metal oomph and emotional power. Neatly summing up the spirit behind these exhilarating new songs is the album’s semi-title track, «The Berserker At Stamford Bridge»: a visceral but vivid historical tale, recounting the Vikings last stand against the English army in 1066 and the mind-bending heroics of one axe-wielding warrior. «For me, this is Amon Amarth 2.0,» vocalist Johan Hegg declares. «I think what we’ve done here is give ourselves the space to explore other parts of our musicality and who we are as a band. If you’re content with where you’re at, what’s the point of continuing? We always want to come up with new ideas and find new ways of doing things and to create bigger and better shows and really try to improve every aspect of what the band is. We want to try to keep growing and to do this for as long as we have the possibility to do so, because this is the best fucking job in the world.» Tracklist 1. Fafner’s Gold 2. Crack the Sky 3.
