Welcome Welcome to Student Activities at Reading University!

I’m Nick Cook, the elected Student Activities Officer at Reading University Students’ Union (RUSU). I work with Reading students to promote and enhance all student activities. Student activities encompasses all societies and clubs, whether based around art, politics, culture, a hobby, degree course, leisure pursuit or team sport! There are over 160 different groups to choose from, so you have no excuse not to give something a go! University is one of best and most important parts of your life (take it from someone who has just completed a degree), so it is important to make the most of all the opportunities that student life presents you with. Getting involved with societies and clubs is a fantastic way of enhancing your time at university. It gives you the chance to develop and display important skills, as well as make long lasting friends. Check out what we have to offer and get involved… to make your uni experience more than just a degree and few nights out.

Want to know more?

Read about all the activities you can get involved with in this handbook and feel free to get in touch directly with the students who run them if you have any questions, using the contact details provided. You may also want to take a look at the student activities pages on the RUSU website. Every society and sports club has a page on the site; with information about the activities they run, their upcoming events and membership fees. You can also join all of these groups online. All the details can be found at: www.rusu.co.uk/activities. However, if you have more general questions, please get in contact with the Student Activities Team. The Team can be found in the Students’ Union all year round, Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm (apart from when the university is closed over Christmas, Easter and on Bank Holidays). Get involved

Exciting ways to get involved this year!

The Big One

Don’t play sport? Then come and support!

Every year, several of our teams apply to be ‘The Big One’ on given match days. These are not just any matches. They are key contests against grudge opponents, so you’re guaranteed a game full of passion. The Big One is a chance for teams to showcase their abilities, spectators to watch some high quality sport and everyone to have a great time. Any team can apply and everyone is welcome to come along and support at The Big One events. With everything from music being played to freebies being handed out, The Big One games are a brilliant chance to get behind the ‘Reading Knights’. Like ‘Reading University Sport’ on Facebook to find out details of all the matches.

Varsity

One day, one trophy, one winner

Possibly the biggest sports event in the Reading calendar! The ‘Reading Knights’ sports teams take on our neighbours, Oxford Brookes, in a bid to earn the right to be called best. Taking place this year on 2nd March at Oxford, Varsity is a whole day of sport, spectating, socialising and celebrating; not to be missed for teams and student spectators alike. Take the chance to get away from studying, spend time with your mates and be involved in our fight to win! Like ‘Reading University Sport’ on Facebook.

Activity Groups

Building student activities together

Activity groups are students’ chance to have their say on activities at Reading. Societies and clubs with similar interests are grouped together and these groups then meet with RUSU’s Student Activities Team collectively, in order to share their ideas and concerns, so that together we can deliver the changes that students really want. Meetings occur twice a term, and although mainly aimed at society committee members, any student is welcome.Details of the meetings can be found on the RUSU website - www.rusu. co.uk/activities

Rewards & Recognition

Be the best. Be seen to be the best.

We have over 100 fantastic societies at Reading, but they don’t always get the recognition they deserve for all they do. Rewards and Recognition is a chance to identify those societies who are a cut above the rest, whose committees and members go the extra mile to enhance the student experience and who give their members the best value for money. Societies receive a rating, based on their activities, to indicate their level of contribution to student life. Look out for those societies who have achieved 4 and 5 star status, as they really are the cream of the crop. This information will be available at freshers’ fayre and on the RUSU website.

Societies Festival

It’s so good it doesn’t need a slogan

New to the RUSU calendar this year, Societies Festival is going to be one of the most exciting events of the year. It is societies’ chance to showcase their expertise and disciplines; with plays, concerts, debates and competitions all taking place. It really will be one not to miss, so look out for the programme, soon to be released on the RUSU website - www.rusu.co.uk/activities

Frequently asked questions What does BUCS mean? Several of the sports clubs refer to BUCS. BUCS stands for British Universities & Colleges Sport and many of our sports teams take part in weekly sports fixtures against other universities in a BUCS competition. Who are the Reading Knights? Reading Knights is the brand that represents all of our sports teams and so it’s the name we want you to get behind this year! What is The Lounge? The Lounge is a non-licensed social space on campus, used by lots of societies for their activities. It is also the home of the three student media groups (info about these can be found in this handbook). It can be found at the back of Café Mondial and is open Monday – Friday, until about 10pm. Some of the rooms are bookable (and to do this you go to the Hub in the Students’ Union), and there is a non-bookable social space at the back if you just fancy a place to sit and chat. The Lounge also has a small garden, open to all.

How much does it cost to join a society or club? Societies and clubs charge varying amounts. Membership prices are not printed in this handbook but can all be found on the RUSU website. Some will be offering discounted membership fees if you purchase at freshers’ fayre, and others offer a pay as you go system. Have a look on the website or contact the society or club directly for information about their fees. If you are joining an activity which is run at SportsPark Facilities (both at Whiteknights and London Road), you will need to be a member of SportsPark or purchase their £4 entry product. This is a one-off fee and can be purchased directly from SportsPark. When do societies and clubs meet? Most sports clubs train every week and you will find a copy of their training times at the back of this handbook. Societies vary in how often they meet. Please contact the society directly and check their pages on the RUSU website for details about their upcoming meetings and events. Do I need insurance to take part? To become a member of any RUSU run sports clubs, you must buy Sports Federation Insurance. This provides you with personal injury insurance cover. You only need to buy this once, as it will cover you for all the clubs you join in the academic year. The cost of Sports Feb is £14 (£14.15 for online purchase’ to include an online transaction fee). Membership can be purchased on the RUSU website at: www.rusu.co.uk/about/6041, where you will also find a copy of the policy documents. You can also purchase membership at Freshers’ Fayre and in the Students’ Union. Where can I find out about volunteering projects? Take a look at the information about Reading University Volunteering Society contained in this handbook, but also look out for the volunteering handbook. This is available in print and on the RUSU website, and contains further details about all the projects we run in the community. These projects will all be at the Volunteering Fayre on Thursday 4th October, but if you have any questions, please get in touch with the Societies and Volunteering Co-ordinator by emailing volunteer@reading.ac.uk or popping in to the Students’ Union. I can’t find what I am looking for… With so much choice, most of you will probably find something that appeals; but if you have a niche interest or unusual idea and think others might share it, then how about starting your own? You will need to complete a form (available from the Student Activities Team) outlining all the plans for your society and your aims and objectives. We want to hear about what you are already doing on campus to get yourselves known and you will need the names and student numbers of 50 people who are also interested in your potential society. They don’t have to join…just show that they are interested and support the idea. On receiving your application, the Student Activities Team will then invite you in for a meeting, to discuss your proposed group further.

Sports & Leisure AIKIDO

m.felton@student.reading.ac.uk www.facebook.com/groups/5142139830/ www.whiteoak-aikido.org Developed in the 20th Century, Aikido is a Japanese martial art, based on the battlefield techniques of the Samurai. It focuses on blending your movement, with the movement and power of the attacker. In essence, it is a functional way of using your enemies’ strength as a tool against them. The biggest feature of aikido is that it does not matter how big or how strong you are; as all the techniques taught, require minimal effort to execute effectively! Aikido builds fitness, suppleness and confidence, whilst developing the efficiency of your body to maximise your power. An additional feature is the incorporation of the sword into training. The way of the sword plays a large part in the movement and motion of Aikido, and with the University of Reading Aikido Club, you will get the chance to train with weapons (Bokken and Jo), to improve your overall technique.

AIRSOFT

Airsoft is a team-based, tactical, war games sport; similar to paint ball. It uses 1:1 replica firearms that fire small spherical pellets. The sport promotes honesty, teamwork, radio skills and leadership. We are a group of fun loving like minded people from a variety of backgrounds, who enjoy socialising and welcome new members. Our main airsofting venue is an abandoned shopping centre in Reading town centre, where we play every 2 weeks or so, on a Thursday night. We make trips further afield at least once a term to a variety of woodland and urban environments. Wear practical clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty, and footwear you can run across uneven surfaces in safely.

CRICKET

readinguniversitycricketclub@gmail.com www.facebook.com/groups/390509941010560/ The cricket season may not start until the summer term, but Reading University Cricket Club (RUCC) is active throughout the year. The mens’ teams compete in BUCS and have each been rewarded with some very successful results. There is training each week, and plenty of friendly matches are also organised. Sponsored by ‘In Control Debt Solutions’, 2012 was an outstanding year for RUCC as the club won the South Eastern 1A Division, gaining promotion into the South Premier Division. The 1st XI boasted the best form of any university, bettering a large number of specialist sports universities. The Cricket Club continues to grow in striving to achieve sustained long-term excellence, as it heads into the winter in preparation for the 2013 season.

DANCE

dance@reading.ac.uk www.facebook.com/#!/groups/224267384301377/ There has never been a more exciting time to be part of Reading University Dance Club! While we have been established for many years, recently we have begun to make a bigger impact both in the University and nationally. We hosted our first competition, the Salsa Fiesta, and saw several Universities travel to take part. We sent more people, to more competitions than before; with several of our members making it through multiple rounds, as well as participating in shows and demonstrations. We have Ballroom, Latin and Salsa lessons each week, with teachers from the local dance schools. We hold additional practice sessions and are broadening the range of dances that we learn. As a club though, the most important part is our members - both students and the local community; and what we do is guided by what they would like to see happen.

FENCING

d.samson@student.reading.ac.uk www.facebook.com/groups/176400047616/ www.rufencing.wix.com/rusufencing#!information Reading University Fencing Club provides a number of opportunities for both students and non-students, depending upon the goals and aspirations of the member. For the more competitive students, we offer the opportunity to compete in our team against other universities. We also offer the chance to try a unique sport, to train at any level, to socialise within our club and at our events, to make new friends and maintain a level of fitness, grace and finesse. Our club organises a trip available to members of any level to compete at a tournament near Paris. This trip is very affordable. We estimate the weekend to cost as little as around £150, inclusive of travel, accommodation, food and competition entry. We also take part in a similar competition in London each year, which is much cheaper still! Just arrive with loose fitting sports trousers, such as a tracksuit or jogging bottoms and a t-shirt – do not wear shorts, and avoid jeans and tops with buttons. 14

FOOTBALL MEN’S

my007608@reading.ac.uk www.facebook.com/groups/331694740249782/ This year we have one of the strongest bases we have had for several years and so it’s set to be an exciting year. As important as the on field performance is, the club places a huge emphasis on socials. The club is a tight nit group from the fifths and without this it would be impossible to keep everyone as involved as they are. Without a doubt, many of the boys at the club will name football socials as some of their best nights out at university.

FOOTBALL WOMEN’S j.earthrowl@student.reading.ac.uk

A great way to get fit, meet new people and learn the techniques of kickboxing and Muay Thai, for competitions and self-defence. Our socials also have a knack for being absolutely phenomenal. We have a qualified kickboxing/ MMA coach who trains us twice per week; and you can expect a good CV warm-up, technique and pad-work and finally, some sparring. The third session is taught by our student coaches in a matted area with our own 16ft ring, where we practice drills focusing on sparring, fight techniques and preparation for upcoming fights. We enter a number of tournaments across the country each year, as well as hosting our own fight night at the university, in the 360 nightclub. For the previous two years it has been a hugely popular event, with opposition fighters coming from universities, including Bristol, Southampton and Loughborough.

KORFBALL

readingunikorfball@gmail.com www.facebook.com/groups/2255659409 www.readingkorfball.wordpress.com WE ARE KNIGHTS KORFBALL! It may be a sport that you’ve never heard of before, but beginners are always welcome so why not come and give it a go! We are a mixed team sport (more banter!); involving a very tall korf basket (3.5m high!), with similar rules to a mixture of basketball and netball (which makes it so much better!) We’re involved in the Oxfordshire League; meaning lots of games and lots of opportunities for you to represent your university. There are also our nationals tournaments, where we go up against our fellow universities! Weekly training sessions allow us key time to train together and our frequent socials give is a chance to bond as a club. We’re a very welcoming mixture of non-students and students, so get down to our Thursday training sessions at the SportsPark and join this fantastic sport!

KUNG FU

readingkungfu@gmail.com www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=5476367681 www.wushukwan.co.uk The Kung Fu club practice Wu Shu Kwan, a traditional Chinese martial art. The club offers excellent self-defence training and is also a great form of exercise. Regular training offers benefits such as improved health, co-ordination, discipline and confidence. Classes include a set of self defence movements focusing on striking, kicking and blocking. We also practice forms (a pre-determined sequence of moves) used to grade progress and achieve belts, plus some pad-work and full-contact sparring to put what you’ve learnt into practice. Anyone can start Wu Shu Kwan training. You don’t need any previous martial arts experience and you can be of any level of fitness. We teach Kung Fu in a way that is interesting and fun but also challenging. As with any art, it can’t be mastered in a day; but with regular practice your fitness increases and your ability to defend yourself and others improves every week. LACROSSE

HOCKEY MEN’S

Lacrosse is known as the fastest sport on two legs and is rapidly expanding within the UK. There are male, female and mixed teams within the club. Most students join without playing before - great if you want to try something new. Men’s lacrosse is a high contact sport, whilst Women’s and Mixed, involves limited contact. We have American coaches to turn us into swanky lacrosse experts. In our first year of competing within a league, both the men’s and women’s teams have been promoted, achieving 2nd and 1st places respectively (with the women’s team also winning their cup final). We have one of the best reputations for socials throughout the uni and we pride ourselves on everyone knowing each other. Tour is one of the highlights, where the whole club hits the beaches of Salou, Spain, for a 4 day sports fest.

Reading University Men’s Hockey Club is one of the university’s highest achieving clubs, with two of our four teams reaching the semi-finals of their BUCS knockout cup competitions, last year. As a club we came 4th in the university BUCS points table last season and are looking to improve on this result in future seasons. The club has 4 BUCS teams which compete on a Wednesday and also a team who compete in a local league on a Saturday. We welcome players of all abilities - from complete beginners to regular players. We like to have a good time as well as playing hockey and regularly organise full club socials and joint socials with the Women’s Hockey Club (easily the fittest girls on campus...)!

TENNIS

hw011638@reading.ac.uk www.facebook.com/groups/100901283308695 Reading Uni Tennis Club welcomes all players of any standard and any size. We are one of the only clubs to compete at a very high level, as well as providing 4 hours coaching a week for purely social players. We reached the semi finals of the Men’s Regional cup last year and the Ladies took their league by storm. And we haven’t even mentioned the socials yet… some would argue that we are more renowned for our socials than our tennis (good or bad, you decide). We will be running a winter tour and a summer tour next year, so you’d be mad to miss out. It’d be great to have as many Freshers on board as possible, so if you’re still undecided (which you surely shouldn’t be); feel free to have a taster session (or taster social) on us!

zq007351@reading.ac.uk www.facebook.com/groups/ruchemsoc Our main objective is to encourage socialising between all chemists (from Freshers all the way up to lecturers!), and to help create a friendly and exciting social aspect to the course! We aim to incorporate as many different activities as we can, in the hope that everyone will find something they enjoy - from film nights, to formal meals and nights out. Particular successes in previous years have included the Halloween Spooktacular, a chance for us to socialise with Psychology, Maths and Duke of Edinburgh Societies, our Amsterdam Residential, a cheeky little holiday abroad and finally our Spring Fling Formal, which could even boast the attendance of some of our favourite lecturers! We thoroughly hope to see faces old and new (lots and lots!!) at future events!

We hope to have a trip abroad and many more exciting events such as the medieval banquet in London. So, if you are a history student you should DEFINITELY sign up and so should everyone else, to have an awesome time partying and expanding your historical knowledge.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS

readingmun@gmail.com www.facebook.com/groups/225267416311 rumun.org Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of the U.N. General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. It not only involves students in the study and discussion of global issues, but also encourages the development of skills useful throughout their lives, such as research, writing, public speaking, problem solving, consensus building, conflict resolution and cooperation. MUN involves students acting like real diplomats of countries in a mock UN forum e.g. the General Assembly, where they debate issues based on a chosen countries foreign policy. It is an excellent addition to a CV for anyone interested in careers connected to political office, foreign affairs, law, journalism, and a whole range of other areas. RUMUN was awarded Best Society (2012-11) by RUSU, and over the past two years has participated in MUN conferences around the country, as well as NMUN in New York and MIMUN in Moscow, debating with students from some of the worlds most established universities. On 30th November - 2nd of December, RUMUN will be hosting the 1st ever international Model United Nations conference, held on the University Campus. Six simulated UN & regional committees will tackle a range of global issues, with 200 students in attendance, from Universities as far afield as Moscow and Zurich. 100 of these spaces are available for Reading students. Together with the debating there will be a full evening social programme for the Friday and Saturday; a great chance to get to know likeminded students from across Europe. THINK TANK

readinguniversitythinktanksociety@hotmail.co.uk www.facebook.com/Reading.University.Think.Tank.Society www.rutts.wordpress.com Over the last academic year the society has set up a blog for our members to contribute to, organised a question time style event, visited Chatham House for a talk about microfinance with Professor Yunus and visited the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) a few times for some excellent, thought provoking and inspiring, high profile events. The Society will continue to run events like the above, in the coming year. In addition, we really want to get the blog going. This blog is for all to contribute to. We want it to be a forum for thought, discussion and the development and refinement of ideas outside of the usual seminars, labs, lectures, etc. If you enjoy discussing real and important issues, this is the place for you.

TRADING & INVESTMENT

RUTIS2012@gmail.com www.facebook.com/groups/RUTIS readingunitrading.weebly.com Warren Buffet made his first investment at the age of 11 and is now one of richest people in the world. It is important for students at Reading with interest or just curiosity about the financial market, to have an opportunity to practice what goes on. The Trading & Investment Society focuses on the process of identifying good businesses and companies to invest in from an investor’s point of view. We also learn how international events have an impact on the financial market e.g. the Forex Market and how investors react to different, significant events, which tend to appear with increasing frequency in recent time (earthquakes, tsunamis). We achieve this by holding meetings to discuss how to read and interpret a company’s financial report, to judge whether it worth investing in. We will then take it to a completely new level by trading (buying and selling) using online trading platforms such as Metatrader. Members also get to practice other relevant trading skills, like portfolio diversification. We invite guest speakers from the City to come and give talks on trading on company share derivatives and other securities. It is a genuine opinion that students from the university have a lot to learn and benefit from the society, not only by increasing their financial awareness but also increasing their employability. Having a good understanding of the financial system is a strong demonstration to employers that the student is commercially aware.

ZOOLOGY

ruzs@live.co.uk www.facebook.com/groups/2251969543 The Zoological Society aims to promote the natural world through trips and visits to observe wildlife in its natural setting, as well as hosting other activities on the theme of natural history. A nature photography competition and social competitions are also held, allowing members to be in with the chance of winning prizes! 43

FISHING

RUFishingSociety@gmail.com www.facebook.com/groups/rufishing Reading University Fishing Society brings students together to provide regular sea fishing trips throughout the year. Whether you have had many years experience or have never picked up a rod before, all are welcome. Equipment is provided to those without their own and for those new to the sport our committee members will be happy to teach you the basics. Over the course of the year our members will have the opportunity to fish at many locations; including Brighton Marina, Cornish Surf Beaches and the Bristol Channel for species such as Mackerel, Flatfish, Cod and Bass. However, it’s not only about fishing...throughout the year we will organise many socials, host BBQ’s where you can cook your catch and also allow extra time for our members to see the sights of the towns we fish at. If you’re looking to explore the UK, make some great friends and catch fish, then you can’t go wrong by joining the Fishing Society.

HARRY POTTER

ruhpcommittee@gmail.com www.facebook.com/groups/162296243887714 www.ruhp.webeden.co.uk Harry Potter fans of Reading finally have a place to express and share their love and passion for the mystical world of wizarding. Upon joining, one finds themselves being sorted into one of the four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin. This is the house they will represent for their entire stay and have brilliant opportunities to earn house points towards the House Cup, display house pride and get to know a smaller group of people before intermingling with other students. Those of the more sporty nature will have the chance to play the muggle version of Quidditch - with inter-house competitions as well as the opportunity to try out for the Reading Rocs, our University team and play against other Universities. We also hold gatherings to embrace the Potter world, with film viewings, quizzes, games and activities throughout the year. Altogether, we are a fun loving and enjoyable society to invest in.

LEGO

e.jonasson@student.reading.ac.uk www.facebook.com/groups/readinglegosoc Everyone loves LEGO. In our weekly build sessions we build penguins, towers twice as tall as ourselves, LEGO Techic-robots, polar bear-sphinxes, TARDISes, pumpkins... and we also make stopmotion animation films! The only limit is your imagination and our collection of bricks, which is constantly growing. We welcome everyone - no matter your age, ability or experience. So if you feel like coming along and bringing your idea to life, what are you waiting for? Join us today! 55

SIGN LANGUAGE

rusls123@live.co.uk www.facebook.com/pages/RU-Sign-Language-Society/196629370353257 www.rusignlanguage.co.uk We aim to promote the use and knowledge of sign language; not only as a means of communication with deaf people, but the general awareness of others. Our integrated activities strive to be educational, safe and fun for all. We believe that sign language should be more accessible for those who want to learn it and therefore we aim to teach basic sign language to educate, bring equality to deaf and hearing people and raise awareness of the positive effect that sign language brings to communication skills. Through informal learning and social events, our members will enjoy a fun, safe and low pressure environment to learn a new language, improve their awareness skills and meet new people. You don’t have to know sign language to join in, just be willing to have a laugh and give it a go.
