Welcome to Student Activities! Here you can find out all the details about our 105 societies, 57 sports clubs taster sessions and meet and greets as well as our volunteering projects on offer. There really is something for everyone, and it will be hard to not find something you’ll love. Whether you are interested in film making, passionate about fundraising, have a love for photography or you want to try a new activity, you will sure find it here. If there are any sports or societies not listed here, please contact student.activities@reading.ac.uk or pop into the Student Activities Office, located within the Students’ Union.

How do I join a club or Society? Come along to the Welcome Fayre and meet the clubs and societies, come along to a taster session or meet and greet. Once you have decided which clubs and societies you wish to join, there are two ways in which you can join. You can sign up via the RUSU webpage, you will need to log in (please note if you have not fully enrolled you will need to sign up as a guest), click on the club / society you wish to join and add their membership to your basket, and checkout, it’s as easy as that! www.rusu.co.uk/activities You are also able to join a club/ society at the Students’ Union reception, where you can pay by cash.

Fresher Fayres 2013

Our Fayres are big and not to be missed events in the Welcome Week calendar... so big that we have to run it over three days! It is the best opportunity to discover what's on offer at the University and locally. RUSU sports clubs and societies, media and volunteer groups will all be there as well as a whole host of commercial companies and charities. Come to the Fayres and chat to the students that run the RUSU's sports clubs and societies, find out what they're about and ask any questions. Volunteering Fayre - Tuesday 1st October 3sixty, Students’ Union 10.00am - 4.00pm To kick start Welcome Week why not come along to our Volunteer Fayre. All RUSU’s own student led volunteer projects will be attending as well as a host of local and national organisations all looking to sign more volunteers up for the new academic year. A wide range of voluntary opportunities will be on offer from wildlife and conservation projects to local charities looking after children and the elderly. Whether you can spare just a few hours here and there or are looking to really get stuck in, there will be something for everyone. We are always looking to expand our volunteering portfolio so if you have an idea about starting a project why not come along and chat to our Volunteer & Social Enterprise Coordinator. Societies Fayre - Wednesday 2nd October 2013 Car Park 4, Students’ Union 11.00am - 5.00pm There are over 100 societies you could join while studying at Reading and the majority will be in attendance at the Societies Fayre on Wednesday 2nd October. Come along to see the variety of activities on offer from Circus Arts to Lock Picking, Sign Language to Rollercoaster and many more. Sports and Leisure Fayre - Thursday 3rd October 2013 Car Park 4, Students’ Union 11.00am - 5.00pm We have just under 60 different sports clubs covering all the usual ones such as football, rugby, netball and hockey who all compete in the South East divisions of BUCS, the university sports leagues, plus a huge number of others that compete in different leagues/competitions. If you are just looking for something recreational then we have something for you too such as Mountaineering, Sub Aqua and Airsoft.

Meet at the pool or keep an eye on our Facebook page (search Reading University Swim Club Fresher’s) for where we will be meeting to walk down. Do not worry if you do not like the early start as there will be evening sessions too; again look on the Facebook page.

Tuesday 1st October

Mountaineering Social Meet and Greet Queens Head, Christchurch Road 8.30pm - late Free Come and meet the Mountaineering club. We shall be in the Queens Head pub, just over the road from the main campus entrance.

Anime Ghibli and Pizza HUMSS 125 6.00pm – 10.00pm Bring money for pizza In HUMSS 125 we’re watching Studio Ghibli films and eating Pizza (or any other takeout you want to order). Feel free to come along and socialise and watch films, but don’t forget the money for your pizza! Muslim Society and Discover Islam Exhibition Palmer Building 11.00am – 4.00pm Free As part of the exhibition we will be organising Islamic talks, career talks, conferences and activity events too. First Vegan and Vegetarian Social Park Bar 8.00pm Free Come along to an informal event to meet the committee members and some other veggies. We’re all very nice, so don’t be scared to come and say hi. We’re starting at Park Bar, and going on to a club if everyone is up for it, bring your friends, veggie or not.

Wednesday 2nd October Anime Walk in Town Palmer Building 11.00am Free Do you want to get to know Reading and find out where the good places to eat, buy manga and buy cosplay supplies? We are running a Walk in Town on Tuesday 1st and Friday 4th October both beginning at 11:00 and meeting outside Dolce Vita (We’ll be easy to find with the anime banner and in cosplay).

First Official Road Ride by the Road Cycling Club SportsPark 1.00pm Free Bring money for coffee/cake To celebrate the club's new official status, Reading Road Cycling Club would like to invite you to join them on their First Official Club Ride. The ride will involve a gentle 2025 miles with a pit-stop midway at a café to have a chat and introduce everyone. All abilities are welcome, so come along and stretch your legs.

Kickboxing Taster Session London Road Campus 5.00pm – 7.00pm Free Come along and try kickboxing for the first time. R.U. Classics Society Meet and Greet Lunch Resources Room, HUMSS Building 12.00pm – 1.00pm Free Take a break from the hustle and bustle of Freshers’ week and let the Classics Society treat you to a free lunch (yes they do exist!). Come along and meet the committee, socialise with other members and course mates; join in with some activities and games, and if you haven’t already done so, you can purchase your membership for the year. We will also provide a tour of the Classics department and the Ure Museum.

Mojo’s Bar quiz takes place every Thursday inside the Students’ Union, and each week we enter a team (or two if we have a large group). It starts at 8pm, but you should arrive at 6:30pm if you want a seat, as it’s usually quite busy during the first few weeks of term. The quiz itself is free during Welcome Week, and is a great way to meet other members of society, whilst testing your trivia. Mojo’s also provides food and drink should you want snacks, dinner, or refreshments during the evening - we recommend the cheesy chips! Fine Art Live Life Drawing Session HUMSS G74 2.00pm – 4.00pm Free Join us in Welcome Week for a taster life drawing session with live models. Sign up to our diverse and exciting society whilst there (free customised gift bag with membership) or alternatively buy membership online. Muslim Society and Discover Islam Exhibition Palmer Building 11.00am – 4.00pm Free As part of the exhibition we will be organising Islamic talks, career talks, conferences and activity events too. Sci-Fi Society Taster Session HUMSS 125 6.30pm – 10.00pm Free Come along to a taster session for the wonderful Sci-Fi/Horror/Fantasy society. We’ll be watching The Hobbit, so come along and have geeky fun with us. Singer Songwriters Welcome Jam and Open Mic Night Van Emden Lecture Theatre, HUMSS 6.00pm Free We will be meeting in Van Emden for a short presentation and Jam session so bring your instruments if you have them. The Video Game Society will have some of their consoles set up for anybody to show up and have a go, or you could just come along and have a chat with current members. Societies are a great place to meet likeminded people and are easy places to make new friends. With that in mind, four other likeminded societies will be having drop in session’s right next to each other.

Christian Union: CU Main Meeting HUMSS Building 6.45pm– 8.30pm Free We will have a short, relaxed meeting where you can get to know others and discover what the CU is all about. During the meeting there will be information about more of the CU’s weekly activities and involvements. Immediately afterwards there will also have an opportunity to find out more about Reading’s local churches. Meet with God. Make new friends. Sing great songs. Enjoy FREE cake!

Law Society Welcome Drinks Reception Common Room, Foxhill House 4.00pm - 6.00pm for Freshers and Postgraduates 6.00pm – 7.00pm for Second and Third years Free Here’s your chance to meet the committee and find out all the amazing things we have planned for you this year, and also a chance to meet loads of other students. There will be free wine and free soft drinks, so come and grab a glass and start your year off properly. This year we will also be extending the Reception to second and third years! So come and join us from 6.00pm – 7.00pm for a postsummer catch up.

Swing Dance Taster Session Van Emden Lecture Theatre, HUMSS 7.30pm – 9.30pm Free Come join the Swing Dance Society for a free taster session. We will introduce you to the world of Lindy Hop, Charleston and other dances that date back as early as the 1920s. You will have the opportunity to give it a go in a no pressure setting with other beginners as well as watch some of our more experienced members. The first hour will consist of a basic run through of fundamental moves, whilst the last hour is a social dance, providing the chance for you to use what you have learnt straight away, dancing with and

Tennis Team Trials Hard Tennis Courts, SportsPark 4.00pm Free The Tennis Trials is a chance to meet this year’s committee and see if tennis is the club for you. It will give us a chance to see who will be challenging for teams this year as the first week of matches comes around very quickly. We will also be holding a fresher’s tournament on Wednesday 9th October and all abilities are welcome. Rugby Union Men’s Fresher Trials Pavilion, behind SportsPark 10:30am – 1.00pm Free All Fresher’s keen to play any level of rugby union are encouraged to attend, as it gives you the chance to meet the current club members as well as trial for a team.

This event is free to attend, and please bring your friends along. Also, bring your own popcorn, snacks and drinks. It’s a great opportunity to make some new friends and to relax. Cake Decorating and Cake Giveaway with Baking Society Reception, Students’ Union 11.00am – 3.00pm Free We will have a stall inside the Students’ Union building where you can come along to meet us, decorate a cupcake and take it away with you. This will be another opportunity to sign up to the baking society. Hope to see you there, even if it’s just for the free cake. Food and Nutrition: Introductory Event (For students new to Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences) Food Biosciences Building – rooms 2.33 and 2.34 2.00pm – 3.00pm Free This is a fun, informal event to welcome all students who are joining the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences. First Aid Taster Session by St John Ambulance Society 3sixty 1.00pm Free We will be hosting a taster session in 3sixty to demonstrate what we do as a society. As a division of St John Ambulance, we will be demonstrating the kinds of first aid techniques that you will learn as a member of our society before qualifying as a first aider yourself. American Football Taster Session SportsPark 12.00pm Free American Football is the fastest growing sport in the UK, with universities all over the country fielding teams to compete against each other in a well-established league. Now you have the chance to try out this sport for yourself. It doesn't matter if you've never played or even watched the sport before. All you'll need is a pair of football boots and our team of highly experienced coaches will provide all the guidance you need to get started; and all for free! So come and get a taste of this dynamic sport, meet some new people and enjoy the team atmosphere. Canoe Fresher’s Paddle Car Park 4, Students’ Union 1.00pm Free (bring money for the BBQ after) Fresher’s Paddle is a chance for everyone to give canoeing a go; whether you’re an expert or a complete novice, enjoy a fun afternoon on the water followed by a tasty barbeque by the Thames. Baking Town Trip Palmer Building 2:30pm - 4.00pm This trip will involve a trip into reading town centre to show you around, followed by eating cake in a cake shop. This will give us the opportunity to get to know any new members. Please bring some money with as you will need to pay for the bus fare and cake. If the weather allows it we may walk into town. Muslim Society and Discover Islam Exhibition Palmer Building 11.00am – 4.00pm Free As part of the exhibition we will be organising Islamic talks, career talks, conferences and activity events too. Roller Coaster Society Trip to Thorpe Park Car Park 4, Students’ Union 8:15am - -6:30pm £22.80 + travel expenses Welcome to the first trip by RCAS in 2013 2014. Opening times are 10.00am until 5.00pm. We will leave promptly from the student union car park at 8:15am and return at roughly 6:30am. Park tickets are £22.80 and travel will be arranged nearer the time of the trip, so keep checking the RUSU website for news. Anyone wishing to sign up to this trip should come to our first meeting of the year on Friday 4th October at 12pm in The Study located at the back of 3sixty, accessible from the Students’ Union Car Park.

Reading University Table Tennis Taster Session SportsPark 3.45pm - 5.45pm Free Come along and have a go at Table Tennis, all abilities welcome. Aikido Taster Session SportsPark 2.00pm – 4.00pm Free Come along and have a go at Aikido, all abilities welcome. Athletics Tasty Track Session Palmer Building 5.45pm Free We will be Leaving at 5.45pm from outside Palmer Building on campus or meet us at Palmer Park running track at 6.15pm. This session is taken by our level 3 coach and involves warm up followed by a session on the track. Whether doing sprints or distance training there's a group for you to train in. Its open to all abilities so do not be put off and give it a try. Many of us before coming to university have never trained on a track before but its great way to improve. Women’s Basketball Trials SportsPark 4:45pm - 6:15pm Free Two great taster sessions which are open to everyone from beginner to those who would like to take basketball more seriously. It’s a great way to meet people and it’s free so come along and we hope to see as many of you there as possible. Polo Taster Sessions SportsPark Car Park Email daisy.clarke@reading.ac.uk for location £10.00 During the taster session we'll head out to Fifield Polo Club. As well as meeting lots of our members you will get the chance to ride the ponies with our coach and see how it feels with the mallet. As well as this we can

Afterwards we'll to the club house for some refreshments and to get to know everyone. If you have any riding gear please bring it, if not, don't worry - we'll have some for anyone who needs it. Ecology and Conservation Bus stop in front of SportsPark (Shinfield Road) 9.30am – 4.00pm Free The 1st Sunday conservation task of the year! Meet at the bus stop in front of Sports Park on Shinfield Road to get picked up in the van to go to the conservation task site. Task can usually include scrub clearing, bramble bashing or fence building. Bring walking boots or wellies, warm clothes you don’t mind getting muddy and a packed lunch. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. Cypriot and Hellenic Gathering Reading City Centre 8.00pm Free The first gathering will be a chilling gettogether event. People will have the chance to sign up for the society (pay membership fee, be added to the mailing list and informed about all upcoming events) and have a firsthand opportunity to meet other members of the society.

Indoor Climbing Introduction Car Park 4, Students’ Union 6.00pm £5.00 (entry to Reading Climbing Centre) Come and try indoor climbing at Reading Climbing Centre. We will give you an experience of the exciting sport of indoor climbing, whilst supervised by an experienced climber. Conservative New Members’ Reception 2013 Outside Palmer Building 7:45pm Free Our New Members’ Reception is a chance for everybody to meet each other and be introduced to the Association Officers in a relaxed, social environment. You will be met with a free glass of wine upon arrival and will be able to find out details about upcoming events and opportunities available to members. This evening is aimed at Freshers and returning students alike. The evening will take place in Park House, a historic mansion hidden in the middle of campus! As it’s a little difficult to find, we’ll be meeting first at 7.45pm outside the Palmer Building before walking over to Park House.

Student Activities ‘What’s On Guide 2013’ Reading University Clay Pigeon Shooting Club is to hold its Fresher’s Shooting Session at local ground EJ Churchill, High Wycombe. The aim of the afternoon is to introduce our first year intake to the usual Wednesday shooting format and to foster strong bonds with our current 2nd and 3rd year members. As a club, we welcome with open arms those that have shot for years and those who may never have shot before. For this taster session, those that have not shot before will be required to undergo compulsory training and tuition from a member of Churchill’s staff. This is a requirement that the shooting ground impose upon our club. Those who have shot before can engage in a round of 50 clays with the other members of the club which will usually end up back at the lodge for tea and banter after an hour or so. Each new member will take our sorting quiz which was written by our previous committee and their answers will determine which house they are sorted into. As well as the sorting ceremony, we will be discussing the events planned for the year and also play some games and do a short quiz before heading over to Park Bar for a drink.

Sailing Club Taster Sessions SportsPark 12.50pm – 5.00pm £5.00 Whether you are an experienced sailor, or beginner wanting to give it a go, this session is for you! This is a great opportunity to get involved with the club. All you need to do is drop us an email to let us know you’re coming, and bring a pair of shoes that you don’t mind getting wet, and a set of warm dry clothes to change into after.

Over the term we will be training for 2 national competitions involving Hindu societies from universities from across the country. The session should last an hour and is fairly relaxed. We are not looking for the next David Beckham. Even if you have not played before, you are welcome to come along and join in.
