Course code: AT0502CB11 $175 before 2/6/10; $195 after

Sports field managers at all levels are increasingly being asked, or in some cases mandated, to reduce or even eliminate synthetic fertilizers and pesticides applied to natural turfgrass playing surfaces. When faced with the prospect of reducing traditional inputs, AND maintaining acceptable playing surface quality, sports field managers know that ‘going green’ is easier said than done. If you’re interested in learning the turf science behind organic turf management or just how to manage your turf fields using fewer pesticide inputs, then this course is for you. During this ½-day course you will hear Rutgers faculty and a veteran practitioner discuss how to implement organic techniques to manage sports fields as well as proven ways to reduce synthetic pesticide inputs. Topics include:

Dr. James Murphy, Extension Specialist in Turfgrass Management for Rutgers Cooperative Extension and Bradley S. Park, Sports Turf Education and Research Coordinator for Rutgers Cooperative Extension serve as coordinators for the Athletic field course serise.

• Organic sports field management - What is it? • The importance of soils management and turfgrass selection in an organic program • Low-impact pesticide options • Sports field management strategies using fewer pesticides

Recertification Credits

Basics of Turfgrass Management

This one-day class covers the diagnosis and repair of the most common problems: broken pipes, malfunctioning valves, broken or malfunctioning sprinkler heads, and electrical problems. You’ll learn what tools you need in the field to diagnose the problems, and instructor Bob Dobson sets aside time to answer the specific questions and problems that might be plaguing your system.

This course will help park managers with park’s largest expense (personnel) and its greatest financial risk (legal liability). Personnel may be a budget line item, but your staff represents your park’s most valuable asset. Without their effort and commitment, a park jewel can slowly deteriorate into an eyesore. Ned Lipman, Director of Continuing Professional Education and popular management instructor, will introduce you to new ideas and strategies to gain commitment from even your most hardened crew members. On the liability side, park managers must take active steps to identify, remove and prevent potential risks before a park injury becomes a lawsuit. Professor Neil Dougherty, an expert witness in park injury cases, will introduce both the thought process and preventative steps that keep managers out of the courtroom.
