Soils and Site Evaluations for Septic Disposal Systems and Stormwater BMPs October 3, 4 and 5, 2011 $695 before 9/19/11; $725 after; $645 multiple Course Code: ES0301CA12 Thousands of septic systems and stormwater basins malfunction for the same reason: failure to understand how water moves (or doesn’t move!) through soil. You cannot hope to design and build these structures without a down-and-dirty understanding of these soils. That’s what this hands-on course is all about. Every day, you will spend equal time moving between lectures in the classroom and soil pits in the field, evaluating soils using your eyes, hands, and nose. You will observe, record and evaluate the site-specific soil characteristics required to write and support a complete soil log, as well as evaluate the soil and landscape data to determine design input. Most importantly, you will develop the necessary tools to determine whether a site is right – legally and practically -- for a septic system or stormwater runoff Best Management Practices (BMP) facility. Day one and day two will be held on campus in New Brunswick, with day three off-campus and in the field. No matter the location, be prepared to leave with mud on your boots!

Attention Professionals Health Officers/Registered Environmental Health Specialists The health and safety of the public depends on your site evaluations. Increase your efficiency in the field while earning continuing education credits towards your HO/REHS license. Engineers and Scientists In today’s economy, every decision must be precise and cost effective. Using the Soil Survey (now online!) is only the first step in evaluation a site. Get fast in the field, too. With BMP requirements, knowing the soil limitations at rhe beginning can prevent costly design revisions down the road. This course has been submitted for New Jersey PE Continuing Professional Competency credits. Faculty Coordinator Marilyn Mroz, PE, President of Cushetunk Technical Services, Inc. and former NRCS staffer, has a unique gift for soils instruction while standing nose-deep in a soil pit. She will be assisted by a team of soil scientists from around the state. Instructional Team

From small ponds to large lakes to drinking water reservoirs to fishing lakes, if you want your lake and watershed management efforts to be successful, you need a technically sound foundation. This course will give you the training you need to properly investigate and diagnose lake quality problems as well as the tools to develop and implement cost-effective, restoration measures. Led by Dr. Stephen Souza, President, Princeton Hydro LLC and other industry professionals, you will be guided through the benefits and pitfalls of all of the most commonly implemented lake and pond management measures. The new, interactive nature of the course will provide attendees with the opportunity to discuss the specific issues and problems impacting the condition of your own waterbody. The course also provides for “hands-on” problem solving and in-class application of the featured course topics. Past Participants say: “From defining diagnosing to choosing a path of action, this course and approach is excellent!” “[Lake Management] provides a perfect background of all topics pertaining to lake management.” “Comprehensive view ... with good depth of detail.” Unable to attend both days?
