This two-day program will focus on the proper operation and maintenance procedures for wastewater collection systems and their component parts. This one-day class has been revised to better bring the science of microbiology to an understandable, everyday level for those in the fields of drinking water/wastewater treatment, industrial hygiene, environmental science or public health. Participants will be introduced to the physiology, characteristics, nomenclature and taxonomy of various types of microorganisms. Topics will include: bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae and protozoa - which is which?, indicator organisms, antibiotic resistance, testing methods, the microbiology of water and wastewater systems, and treatment and/or mitigation options. The class will include an interactive session during which participants will use microscopes to identify various microorganisms in environmental samples, as well as several hands-on equipment demonstrations.
