ST. MARGARET’S JUNIOR MARIE GRIFFITH IS ONLY SO-CAL RESIDENT TO START ELITE HONORS PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERsITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA San Juan Capistrano resident Marie Griffith (age 17), who recently completed her junior year at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, will be skipping her senior year of high school to begin her studies at the University of Southern California (USC) this fall as a Resident Honors student. Griffith is the only student from Southern California and one of just fifteen in the nation to participate in the Resident Honors Program this year. The Residence Honors Program (RHP) at USC is a highly competitive early entrance honors program that has remained ‘under the radar’ despite its 35 year existence. Each year, RHP accepts an average of twenty students with a history of academic success and the social-emotional maturity to function independently as college freshmen one year early. The first letter Griffith received from USC inviting her to apply for the RHP in September 2011 came by surprise. It wasn’t until she received a second letter from USC in October that she decided to “give it her best shot.” “When I first read the RHP requirements and standards, I was a little nervous and wasn’t sure if I should apply. Also, I would miss my senior ‘bonding year’ with many my class at

St. Margaret’s, some friends I’ve been with since preschool. I realized that those friendships will still be there, but the RHP opportunity was once in a lifetime,” stated Griffith. She completed the applications, essays, SAT and ACT exams and obtained 5 letters of recommendations in time to meet the December 1 deadline. Marie also had to be personally interviewed at USC, which is mandatory for all RHP applicants. “Marie has many attributes that will lead to her success at USC. First, she is mature. She carries herself with confidence and has extraordinary perspective. Second, Marie knows what it means to persevere. She tackles challenges head-on, and is not afraid to take risks. Finally, Marie’s priorities are in order. She takes her academics seriously, but does not let herself get overwhelmed. She knows how to maintain balance in her life between school, service, friends, and dance. While I am sad to see Marie go to college a year early, I know that she is prepared for this new challenge. USC is lucky to have her!” stated Amy Warren, Griffith’s school advisor and St. Margaret’s Associate Director of College Counseling. Making big decisions like accept-

ing this honor and challenge is no surprise for young Griffith. Marie’s next decision upon acceptance into the RHP program was selecting a major. A self-proclaimed “math and science geek,” Marie has always been drawn to the fields of neuroscience, psychology and biology. She ultimately chose a new major at USC which combined her three fields of interest -- Cognitive Science, with a minor in International Relations. A Headmaster’s Honor student at St. Margaret’s, Griffith was ambitious and driven at a young age and began researching college options in 6th grade. A passionate philanthropist, she volunteers over 150 hours of community service each year working with children at Special Camp for Special Kids, counseling 5th- 8th graders at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, and tutoring elementary school kids through the Big Brother Big Sister program and local Boys and Girls Club. Marie is also a member of National Charity League, Laguna Beach and the Community Service Honor Society. Marie Griffith has a long list of hobbies, achievements, and extracurricular activities. In addition to receiving a Black Belt in Shaolin Kempo

Karate by age 12 and placing 2nd in weapons form and sparring at the 2008 San Diego Grand International Martial Arts Competition, Griffith also dances at Mission Viejo Dance and Performing Arts and is on the “MV Crew,” a competitive senior hip hop team. Marie received a varsity letter for making the varsity cheer team her freshman year of high school, and various dance awards. Other hobbies include reading, travel and practicing archery with her dad.

Los Rios Rock School Sells out the Coach House Six Hundred Rock Fans Crowd the Streets of San Juan Capistrano to Hear Top New Teen Bands By Caroline Pohl, Staff Reporter With an overwhelming turnout of six hundred people, the Los Rios Rock School has mastered a great feat in selling out South Orange County’s largest rock venue in San Juan Capistrano, the Coach House. Over sixty students of the Los Rios Rock School performed in a three hour set, delivering their own individually chosen rock melodies. After opening its doors at 5:30, The Coach House was host to the students as well as the bands The In Between, Shoot Up the Cat, and The Christian Hernandez Rotation. It was well past midnight when the show finally came to an end on July 27 to the loud applause and cheers of many attendees. The proceeds of the show will help fund the expansion of Los Rios Rock School, a music school in San Juan Capistrano which has grown to accommodate more than seventy students in the community. The school began in 2007 when owner Tyler Marolf first started tutoring students out of his Los Rios home. Five years later, after a growing demand from students, the Los Rios Rock School announced its grand opening in January of this year. Since then, the 3000 square foot state-of-the-art facility

has provided a professional music approach for dozens of students. The additional 1500 square feet expansion will provide two more live rooms, allowing Marolf to open up the waiting list. Behind the curtain, Marolf works with two other music teachers, Christian Hernandez and Spencer Askin, to produce an environment in which “every child has a voice.” According to Marolf, Los Rios Rock School is different in that it teaches students to respect music, as well as each other. Students discover not only how to play the instruments, but how to work together in a performance setting. Through hourly sessions, Saturday rehearsals, and annual shows, Marolf encourages his students to develop a healthy work ethic and a sense of their own individuality. Marolf’s love for music and success with the Los Rios Rock School led him in February to establish Love & Service, Inc., a non-profit organization designed to allow children to develop a close relationship with the arts. Through this organization, children with autism will be able to work one-on-one with music professionals in a safe environment, giving these children a learning experience

STOMP, the international sensation, is making its triumphant return to Orange County at Segerstrom Center for the Arts October 9 – 14. Single tickets, which start at $20, will go on sale Sunday, September 9 at 10 a.m. PST. The 2 p.m. performance on Saturday, October 13 will include audio description for patrons with visual impairments. The return of the percussive hit also brings some new surprises, with some sections of the show now updated and restructured and the addition of two new full-scale routines, utilizing props like tractor tire inner tubes and paint cans. STOMP is directed and created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas. “After creating new routines for STOMP OUT LOUD in Vegas, [co-creator] Luke Cresswell and I decided it was time to rework elements of our main production, STOMP,” said co-creator Steve McNicholas. “STOMP has evolved a great deal ever since its first incarnation at the Edinburgh Festival. Every reworking has involved losing some pieces and gaining new ones, but has always stayed true to the original premise of the show: to create rhythmic music with instantly recognizable objects, and do it with an eccentric sense of character and humor.” The changes that can now be seen in the tour of STOMP are the biggest since the late 1990s. A new piece “Paint Cans” evolved out of the

“Boxes” routine in the Las Vegas show and “Donuts” is a piece that implements huge tractor tire inner tubes, worn around the waist on a bungee cord. For many years, the creators had looked for a STOMP equivalent of the Latin percussion instrument the guiro, a gourd-shaped open-ended instrument with ridges along the side that are rubbed by a wooden stick to create its sound. The climactic trashcan sequence “Bins” has been restructured to include a guiro-like new found instrument: strip-lighting recycling containers. From its beginnings as a street performance in the UK, STOMP has grown into an international sensation over the past 14 years, having performed in more than 350 cities in 36 countries worldwide. STOMP continues its phenomenal run with the ongoing sell-out Off-Broadway production at New York’s Orpheum Theatre, a North American tour and two productions overseas – a London company and a European tour. STOMP, an overwhelming success marked by rave reviews, numerous awards and sell-out engagements, is the winner of an Olivier Award for Best Choreography (London’s Tony Award), a New York Obie Award,

a Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatre Experience and a Special Citation from Best Plays. The young performers “make a rhythm out of anything we can get our hands on that makes a sound,” says co-creator/director Luke Cresswell. Stiff-bristle brooms become a sweeping orchestra; Zippo lighters flip open and close to create a fiery fugue; wooden poles thump and clack in a rhythmic explosion. STOMP uses everything but conventional percussion instruments – trashcans, tea chests, plastic bags, plungers, boots and hubcaps – to fill the stage with compelling and infectious rhythms. Critics and audiences have raved: “STOMP is as crisp and exuberant as if it had opened yesterday,” says The New York Times. The San Francisco Chronicle declares “STOMP has a beat that just won’t quit!” The Los Angeles Times exclaims: “Electrifying! Community Resource Center of San Clemente participates in Resource Fair at iHOPE

SAN CLEMENTE RECOGNIZED FOR PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT SUCCESS

The Community Resource Center of San Clemente (CRCSC) was one of several non-profit groups that participated in the Resource Fair at iHOPE on Saturday, July 28th. San Clemente residents from the local neighborhood attended the event to learn more about free and lowcost services available to the community. The Community Resource Center of San Clemente and the San Clemente Wellness Committee partnered together on a “Re-Think Your Drink” nutrition booth which was a big hit. Parents and children received information on nutrition, making healthy meals and physical health programs currently being held at the CRCSC. Attendees delighted as they sampled fresh fruit smoothies and spun the “nutrition wheel” for food and prizes. The booth also featured energy drinks and soda cans with sugar packets tapped on to show how much sugar is actually contained in most popular beverages. Visitors to the booth walked away with a new perspective on nutrition and were each given recipes for healthier food and drink choices. The Community Resource Center of San Clemente (CRCSC) is a faith-based, not for-profit tax exempt 501 (3)(c) organization committed to providing activities, programs and services that educate, develop, and care for individuals and families’ health and development of all ages in the community of San Clemente.

The International City/County Management Association (ICMA) has recognized the City of San Clemente for its performance management efforts with a Certificate of Achievement from the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Center for Performance Measurement™ (CPM). San Clemente is among five jurisdictions receiving the honor this year. ICMA advances professional local government worldwide and its certificate program recognizes the principles of performance management. The Center encourages the use of performance information in a positive, continuous-learning environment in order to foster organizational cultures that deliver results that matter. “This recognition is reassurance that the City has the finest leadership and governance, which has fostered a culture of financial astuteness and developed a valuable team that strives for continuous improvement in an effort to satisfy the residents’ needs for quality, cost effective delivery of services,“ said Mayor Jim Evert. The certificate program assesses a local government’s performance management program and encourages analysis of results by comparing to peers and gauging performance over time. Performance management aids in cost reduction, program prioritization, and quality improvement. It also encourages accountability and transparency. Certificates are awarded at the levels of Achievement, Distinction, and Excellence. Criteria for the Certificate of Achievement include: s Reporting of performance data to the public through budgets, newsletters, and/or information provided to elected officials; s Data verification efforts to ensure reliability; and, s Staff training. Canine Summer Maladies: Things to Watch Out For in Your Dog By Abby Willow I have predominantly white dogs. Like red-headed and fair skinned humans, fair-hued dogs tend to have higher skin sensitivity than other dogs. This is mainly because their skin is pink as opposed to the more common greyish-black colour of darker dogs. My larger mutt is suffering from “hot spots”. A common ailment in many dogs, this is easily recognizable, at least in my opinion, by a sudden smell of feet. Hot spots occur when moist areas on a dog’s body (such as ears, neck, hindquarters, etc) become irritated and itchy and your dog scratches like mad to relieve himself. Unfortunately, even observant owners can take a while to see what is happening with their poor animals and when they do, the damage has been done already to its worst extent. My poor dog has made herself bald all around her butt and her neck is completely raw and sticky. The best treatment for hot spots is to try not to let your dog get them in the first place. My dog is long-haired and loves to swim in the canal, which is a bad combination. After swimming I don’t bother toweling or rinsing her off, I simply let the sun do its job on her Page 6

while we run. Unfortunately, her collar is a terrible culprit in the rash on her neck. Imagine having a constantly wet sweatband on your wrist and think of the terrible infection and/or rash you would eventually get as your body heats itself. With no way to thoroughly dry, my dog’s neck became one giant hot spot that the poor dear was scratching so fervently I thought she had fleas. It was that foot smell that gave it away. It’s the same smell she gets when she gets ear infections (also due to canal water) and upon removal of her collar I found a crystallizing, gooey mess of matted fur and bright red patchy bald spots. The first thing to do upon discovering a skin irritation on your animal is to call the vet. As my dog has had skin irritation before the first thing I did was cut away the fur surrounding her bald spots to expose them to dry air and get them away from dirty hair. The second thing I did was apply a cool cloth to the wound, as it was red and HOT to the touch-hence the term “hot spot”. Then I administered the treatment of COMPLETE UNDIVIDED GUILTY MOMMY ATTENTION (which is her favourite-my dog loves

it in high doses). When I called the vet the first thing he told me was not to let my dog swim in the canal (we’d been over this before). The second thing he said was to bring my dog in and he’d get her on a steroid treatment. (Steroids as a treatment plan discourage irritation and scratching in dogs, allowing their itchy wounds healing timeand great relief for the poor mutts). I knew the drill-I’d take her in, she’d get a steroid shot, I would get yelled at, my dog would get some cream and pills to treat her rash, and I would leave sheepishly with the knowledge that I knew better than to let my dog swim and remain wet when it is soon-to-be high summer and her body will react. I’d also leave a couple hundred dollars poorer. What matters though is that my dog is now almost well. We steer

clear of the canal (for the most part) and when she DOES get wet I make sure to rinse and towel her after wards. I also remove her collar so there is nowhere for all that moist heat to store itself. She’s still bald, but the white peach fuzz is starting to grow back in ways that resembles a baby bird first getting its feathers. And she’s happy now. No more scratching, itching, or rubbing her butt along the carpet. Oh-and no more feet smell. We all feel a little better.

San Clemente Cupcake Maker Teams Up With FAM to Help Feed The Hungry It is difficult to believe that hunger exists in Orange County. Most people think of hunger in terms of famine and mass starvation, terrible tragedies; not something that affects people every day in our own community. Hunger in our community is often more subtle. It’s a child who stuffs his pockets during lunch at school so he has food to eat at home in the evening. It’s a parent who is ironically overweight, because sugar and carbohydrateladen foods are often the least expensive at the local store. It’s a senior citizen who goes without food in order to buy medicine, further jeopardizing their already fragile health. The reality is that there are hungry people in Orange County. Family Assistance Ministries of South Orange County (FAM) was founded in 1999 by Ellen Gilchrist to continue to accommodate families that the Episcopal Service Alliance could no longer serve. They started with 135 and now they provide assistance to nearly 2,000 people every month; half of these are children and the elderly. The newest bakery in San Clemente, Oh For Sweets Sake at 111 Avenida Palizada in Old City Plaza, is teaming up with FAM, and will sponsor a canned food drive that will run July 1st through July 31st. Folks can bring a canned or boxed good and save $1 on a single treat or bring in 2 food items to save $3 on a six-pack. Donations received through the drive will help FAM feed those in need throughout South Orange County. Food items that are being accepted are cans of food of any kind and box food like macaroni and cheese, etc. (No glass items please) A contribution means much needed help, and hope, will be available to those who need it. Clambake Kicks Off Summer and Raises Big Clams for The Children’s Bureau

The Children’s Bureau Clambake kicked off the summer charity season in style at Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine with more than 200 guests attending this exciting event. The night raised an incredible $144,000 for Children’s Bureau’s child abuse prevention programs in Orange County. Starting off the evening, guests were greeted with refreshing signature cocktails of Lemon Drops and Martinis; then watched in amazement as a sand sculptor created a beautiful rendition of the Children’s Bureau logo. Tray passed Hors d’oeuvres consisted of deep fried Clams served in a Parchment Cone, Coconut Shrimp with Spicy Mango Dipping Sauce and Canapé of Stilton Cheese with Gala Apples and Roasted Pecans. The décor was not your average red and white checkered clambake as there were hues of ocean turquoise, shades of sandy browns, scattered seashells, hemp ropes, and fishing nets that brought a bit of the ocean shore to Debbie and Paul Feuerborn Michael and Eve Ruffatto the ambiance. Hanging twinkling white lights created an intimate yet festive atmosphere for the outdoor space. Soft throw blankets provided warmth and added to the cozy ambiance. Starting off dinner, guests enjoyed tender California Greens with fresh Strawberries and Goat Cheese with Balsamic Vinaigrette. The main dish was a duet of Pan Roasted Petit Filet of Beef with a Red Wine Sauce and a Grilled Lobster Tail with a Lemon Beurre Blanc Sauce that was presented on Garlic Potato Puree with asparagus and corn on the cob garnish. The delightful dessert was a Chef’s Custom Dessert Buffet served fireside with “Make Your Own S’mores”. The live auction started and folks were very excited to start bidding. With items such as a weekend golf getaway for four at Oak Creek Golf Club with an evening stay at Island Hotel with complimentary dinner for six including Chef’s Choice of Wine and $100 shopping spree at Fashion Island. Eve and Michael Ruffatto were the lucky winners and walked away with this package for $800. Then there was the Cabo San Lucas Vacation with Airport Limo Service Richard and Christy Flanagan with Nicole and Steve Joseph that went to Ashley and Mark Duva for $1600.
