TEN NEW RANCHO BUSINESSES SIGNAL LOCAL ECONOMIC RECOVERY Rancho Santa Margarita Business Community Impressed with Rush of New RetailerS RANCHO FINALLY GETS WAL-MART’S FULL ATTENTION
WORLD’S LARGEST RETAILER TAKES AIM AT RANCHO’S RETAIL MARKET When Wal-Mart was getting ready to build a multi-million dollar superstore in the Rancho Santa Margarita area back in the early 90’s, they found only tepid interest from the City of Rancho. So the folks from Wal-Mart politely closed their checkbooks and marched over to Foothill Ranch, where they built their recently expanded megastore. Just during the past year, Target added a smart little (ten thousand square foot) grocery operation to their 135,000 square foot Rancho Santa Margarita location. Target not only sells bread and milk but also produce, frozen foods, baked goods, dry deli, pizza, beer, wine and a modest packaged meat department as well. If Target’s goal was to provoke the giant retailer Wal-Mart, then Mission Accomplished! Never mind that Wal-Mart is also the biggest private employer in the world with over two million employees, and is the largest retailer in the world with 8,970 locations and 180 Billion in assets. Rancho’s city fathers quickly approved Wal-Mart’s renewed interest. Today it’s massive fleet of contractors are currently energetically renovating a “small” 30,000 square foot space between Lowe’s and Staples in Rancho Santa Margarita where they say they will open what they call a Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market which is their quaint term for their chain of grocery stores that average about 42,000 square feet .They are used to filling the gap between discount stores and supercenters, offering a variety of products, which include full lines of groceries, pharmaceuticals, health and beauty aids, photo developing services, including beer, wine and a limited selection of merchandise. The Wal-Mart retail grocery operation is anticipated to open in Rancho Santa Margarita sometime around the end of July this year.
