RANCHO’S Braden Butler Makes a Difference By Diane Hawkins B r a d e n B u t l e r, o f B o y Scout Troop 755 from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, chose the 2013 Run for Ruby in Rancho Santa Margarita as his Eagle Scout project. Braden’s duties included attending all planning meetings, recruiting all 80+ volunteers and signing up blood donors for the event. He personally managed set-up and clean-up and notified n e i g h b o r s a ff e c t e d b y the race through street closures. He was also involved in approaching local businesses to ask for their involvement and enlisting community support for the run. His Boy Scout troop was right behind him to make it all happen. As Braden’s mom Elise said, “It’s amazing to see these young men, willing to show up at 5 am on a Saturday, especially as cold as it was that morning.”

Braden Butler on the right pictured with RSM volunteers Kristin Hicken, Jenny Hoertig and Elise Butler (mom) at the Run for Ruby event.

When Braden, a sophomore at the Orange County School for the Arts, was asked why he chose helping with this particular

event, he said, “I wanted to do something that was meaningful and that could really make a difference in someone’s life.

I thought I could get the youth involved and make them aware of the importance of blood, bone marrow and organ donations”.

OCTA’s new board convenes its first meeting of 2013, addressing different transportation issues and programs.

New Chair and Vice Chair Begin New Leadership Role

In a unanimous decision, OCTA’s board of directors selected Director Greg Winterbottom as the new chairman and Director Shawn Nelson as the new vice chairman of the 17-member board Monday morning. Winterbottom, a public member on the board who has served as vice chairman since 2009, expressed his gratitude to fellow board members as well as his continuing desire to deliver on the promise of providing effective

infrastructure for the community. “I do thank you very much and will do my best to uphold the seat that has been held by many excellent leaders,” Winterbottom said. “I hope to help move our organization along and make sure to meet all the needs of Orange County residents.” Winterbottom brings more than 25 years of experience in transportation issues to the OCTA board, on which he has been a member since 1993, serving as chairman in 2004.

In addition to his work on the OCTA board, he currently is chairman of the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC). The MSRC works closely with OCTA and reviews funding proposals for projects that reduce air pollution from motor vehicles within the South Coast Air District. Replacing Winterbottom as vice chair is Fourth District Supervisor Shawn Nelson, who joined the board in 2011. In addition to serving on the

OCTA board of directors, Nelson served as the mayor of Fullerton from 2004 to 2007. Nelson is an active member of the community and has served for six years as the city’s representative to the board of directors of the Orange County Water District.

Sawdust Announces 2013 “Sustain Local Art and Cuisine” Fundraising Event The Sawdust Art Festival is pleased to announce its 2013 “Sustain Local Art and Cuisine” fundraising event scheduled for Sunday, March 10 from 3-7 pm at the Sawdust grounds, hosted under the umbrella of Laguna Beach Visitors & Conference Bureau’s Laguna A La Carte annual event. The Sawdust is excited to partner with local restaurant 370 Common owner Chef Ryan Adams to present a three-course meal with wine and beer pairings. Unique dining-ware, serving-ware and stemware will be made by a team of talented Sawdust artists specially for this event. Sawdust artists will “meet and greet” event guests and demonstrate their creative processes at the event. Guests will take home special art gifts and will have the opportunity to purchase art pieces at the event. A portion of the proceeds raised at the “Sustain Local Art and Cuisine” event will benefit the Sawdust Art Education Fund and will be directly utilized in the creation of a 15-minute educational artist video. Twelve Sawdust artists will be interviewed and captured on film, sharing and demonstrating their specific creative processes. The twelve artist demonstrations will be pieced together into

a complete film and will be the fourth in a series of similar films. These films are an integral part in supporting Sawdust’s mission and will serve in educating the public as guests come through the festivals each year. Due to lack of funding, the Sawdust Art Festival has had to put the creation of these films on hold since 2009. In order to retain the knowledge of unique art forms and how they are created, the production of these artist films is very important to the Sawdust Art Festival. “Sustain Local Art and Cuisine” tickets are $195 per person. Space is limited. Visit www.sawdustartfestival. org/fundraiser or call 949-494-3030 for tickets. To contribute at sponsorship levels, please contact Cynthia Fung at cfung@sawdustartfestival. org or 949-497-0517. The Sawdust Art Festival is located at 935 Laguna Canyon Road. The Sawdust Art Festival is a non-profit art organization dedicated to educating the public and promoting the art created in Laguna Beach. Two-hour Sawdust Studio Art Classes are offered every Friday and Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the Sawdust Art Festival Grounds. To check out more details about the Sawdust Art

Festival and other upcoming events and festivals, please navigate to www.sawdustartfestival.org or call 949-494-3030. The Eagle Dance Team hoists three banners for first place finishes at the Santiago Shark Splash Spectacular dance competition.

Story and Photos by: Steve Wylie The nationally-recognized Eagle Dance Team from Santa Margarita Catholic High School opened their 2013 competition season with a large haul of awards at the Shark Splash Spectacular at Santiago High School in Corona last weekend. The Eagles travel to San Diego County this weekend to compete at the California Association of Dance/Drill Team Directors (CADTD) event at Westview High School. CHOC Children Gala Raises $900,000 The Island Hotel in Newport Beach was the setting for the 5th annual CHOC Cherishes Children Gala that honored the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange and St. Joseph Hospital of Orange. Around 475 guests attended the black-tie affair that featured a cocktail reception, dinner, live auction and entertainment. This year’s gala, themed “A Future Built on Hope,” raised money for the “Change CHOC, Change the World” campaign. Publically launched in spring 2010 and running through June 30, 2013, the comprehensive $125 million fundraising campaign aims to make Orange County one of the safest and healthiest places for children in the nation. Specifically, the campaign will help CHOC realize its vision of achieving national recognition as a premier children’s hospital by building a state-of-the-art patient care tower, set to open this spring; establishing a substantial endowment to support recruiting more of the world’s top pediatric experts who can drive research and clinical breakthroughs; and building upon the academic and research affiliation with UC Irvine and its School of Medicine to advance innovative treatments and cures for children. The décor was breathtaking walking into the ballroom. Since the gala committee couldn’t bring the event to the new tower, the goal was to bring the beautiful new tower to guests. That was reflected in the decor with a dramatic video wall, spanning the entire length - floor to ceiling - of the ballroom. Taking the stage to honor the Lifetime Achievement Awards was CHOC President and CEO, Kimberly Cripe, who presented the awards to Sister Theresa LaMetterey, CSJ, and Steve Moreau, president and CEO, St. Joseph Hospital. During the presentation, Cripe expressed her deep gratitude for the role the honorees have played in CHOC’s history and in supporting the health and well-being of children and families in Orange County. Dinner was served and guests enjoyed for their first course Butter lettuce salad chevre, orange segments, and pomegranate with citrus vinaigrette. The main course consisted of a Petite filet of beef on potato au gratin with red wine sauce and chimichurri and Maine diver scallops on truffle risotto with Beurre Blanc with Ragout of mushrooms with carrots and Brussel sprouts. Decadent desserts were enjoyed; they were Chocolate salted caramel mousse and red velvet cheesecake. A plethora of items were offered for auction this year, which included a Martha’s Vineyard Hideaway; Angels Ultimate Baseball Fantasy; a trip to Casa Fiesta Zihuatanejo, Mexico, but the auction item yielding the highest bid of $26,000 was a luxury golf vacation on the big island of Hawaii. This year, CHOC raised $900,000 which is up from last year’s total of $600,000. Towards the end of the evening, Cripe announced a $27 million gift from Newport Beach resident and retired businessman Bill Holmes to name the new tower, which opens in the coming weeks. Local Dentist Dr. Michael Tessier Suggests Faster and Easier Five Minute Way to Cure Canker Sores and Cold Sores About twenty percent of the population suffers from canker sores, while twenty to thirty percent suffers from cold sores. Both kinds of these common mouth lesions are painful and annoying but there’s no need to wait a week or ten days for this irritating condition to subside.

Here in my dental office in Rancho Santa Margarita, I use a laser. It quickly delivers a small, concentrated amount of energy to a very specific, localized area, and, in the course of a five minute office visit, the lesion is significantly reduced in size, essentially scabbed over, and the patient is free of pain. Modern technology at its best! Cold sores are fluid-filled blisters on the lips. Their outbreak is stimulated by trauma, colds, or most commonly, exposure to the sun. People who get them regularly report a tingling sensation in the area before any lesion actually appears. Anti-viral medications taken very soon after onset dramatically shorten the length of time of the outbreak and its severity. The amino acid, Lysine, is said to be useful in fighting cold sores. The culprit herpes simplex virus is easily transmittable. Canker sores, also called mouth ulcers or apthous ulcers, are not contagious. They occur as shallow ulcers inside of the mouth. Because they are not caused by a virus, canker sores cannot be treated with anti-viral medications. Canker sores are a reaction to certain “triggers” that initiate their formation. Foods like chocolate, nuts, beer, in some cases orange juice, and wheat products may be the instigator. Of course, injury to the inside of the mouth caused by eating hard candy, crusty French bread, corn chips, or hurried tooth brushing can also be the perpetrators. Warm salt water rinses are the old fashioned treatment of these lesions. Rinsing this way increases circulation and thereby removes toxins from the inflamed tissues. Ibuprofen, an over-the-counter, non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory, is slow but effective. But most people with busy lives find it faster, easier and more comfortable to come into my dental office and enjoy the immediate relief a laser treatment provides. The laser is fast, affordable and, as I mentioned above in the course of a five minute office visit, the lesion is significantly reduced in size, essentially scabbed over, and you continue your daily routine free of pain. Please don’t hesitate to call my office if mouth lesions are a problem. HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS LET FANS DETERMINE RULES OF THE GAME 2013 “You Write the Rules” World Tour brings unprecedented fan participation STAPLES Center, Honda Center, and Citizens Business Bank Arena Known as innovators of the game of basketball for decades, the world famous Harlem Globetrotters are again introducing something unparalleled in the history of sports and family entertainment, taking kid participation and fun to a whole new level on their 2013 “You Write the Rules” World Tour. For the first time ever, fans will decide the rules for the game that could affect the final outcome. This could be anything from playing with two basketballs at once, to getting double the points for each basket made. The new rules will be on display during four games in 2013 in the LA area between Feb. 16-18, including: Saturday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. – Anaheim – Honda Center Sunday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. – Los Angeles – STAPLES Center Monday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. – Ontario – Citizens Business Bank Arena Fans can go online with their kids to www.harlemglobetrotters.com/vote to vote for which ground-breaking rule they want to see implemented in the game. Then, fans can purchase tickets to see the winning rules live at the game. Tickets are on sale now at www.harlemglobetrotters.com and each respective box office. Information on group and scout tickets can also be found at www.harlemglobetrotters.com Before the game, take part in a once-in-a-lifetime experience with your family where you get to actually spend time on the court with the Globetrotters one-on-one – shooting, trying out ball tricks, autographs and photos. The unique 30-minute pre-show, “Magic Pass,” will create memories of a lifetime.# After virtually every game, Globetrotter stars remain on the court for autographs and photographs with fans.* This year’s Globetrotters roster features stars such as Special K Daley and Flight Time Lang. They will join many other fan favorites, including 7-foot-8 Tiny Sturgess (the Guinness World Record holder as the World’s Tallest Professional Basketball Player), 5-foot-2 Too Tall Hall (the shortest Globetrotter ever), and female star

T-Time Brawner.** The North American leg of the 2013 “Your Write the Rules” World Tour will tip-off on December 26, 2012, and will run through April 2013. The team will play over 270 games in nearly 240 cities in 45 states and nine Canadian provinces. Sponsored by Howard Johnson Hotels, Greyhound Lines, Spalding, and Russell Athletic, the Original Harlem Globetrotters will celebrate their 87th consecutive year in 2013, continuing a world famous

tradition of ball handling wizardry, basketball artistry and one-of-a-kind family entertainment that continues to thrill fans of all ages. Throughout their history, the Globetrotters have showcased their iconic talents in 120 countries and territories on six continents, often breaking down cultural and societal barriers while providing fans with their first-ever basketball experience. Proud inductees of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the Globetrotters have

entertained hundreds of millions of fans—among them popes, kings, queens, and presidents—over more than eight thrilling decades. o other trend has parked itself at the forefront of the culinary world quite like food trucks, but these aren’t the stale doughnut and questionable hotdog stands of yore. From coast to coast, a new generation of chefs has been putting unique cuisines on four wheels. But if you’re not in an urban setting, that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on these delectable dishes. To celebrate the phenomenon, CanolaInfo partnered with four food truck chefs/owners representing different U.S. regions to create the Street Eats Recipe Collection, allowing home cooks everywhere to recreate delicious food truck fare. “The economic downturn has driven the street food trend in recent years along with Americans’ love of all things fast and convenient,” says Josh Henderson, owner of Skillet Street Food in Seattle, Wash. “There are all of these wonderful chefs looking for a way to bring their creations to the masses, and now with mobile kitchens, it’s easier than ever. This recipe collection provides yet another way of sharing our love of flavorful foods.” Because of its versatility, canola oil is used in each Street Eats recipe. At 468°F, the smoke point (heat threshold) of canola oil is among the highest of all cooking oils, which means it’s perfect for sautéing and baking. “I use canola oil in my food truck because it can take the heat and has a light texture and neutral flavor,” says Henderson. “From my skillet dishes to my gravy, it is very adaptable, letting other ingredient flavors shine without weighing them down.” Canola oil can also help kick saturated fat to the curb when used in place of solid fat or other oils in recipes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized a qualified health claim on canola oil’s potential to reduce the risk of heart disease when used in place of saturated fat. For the complete Street Eats Recipe collection and list of food truck chefs, visit www.CanolaInfo.org or www.Facebook.com/CanolaInfo.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-280-2832 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site www.auction. com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case 20120169805979. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site.
