More than 150 Pop Art works including furniture, paintings, and everyday objects, go on view at the Orange County Museum of Art Pop Art Design In the late 1950s, Pop Art burst onto the art scene with nothing less than a bang. On January 7, 2017, the Orange County Museum of Art opened Pop Art Design with more than 150 artworks that are bold, bright, and familiar. Pop Art influenced furniture and architecture, as well as everyday objects. Sofas, lamps, and paper bags became topics of artistic reflection and developed into a genre that moved beyond visual art and included both graphic design and industrial design. Pop Art Design is the first comprehensive exhibition examining the inspirations and cross-references between art and design that continue to shape our society today. The exhibition is on view January 7 through April 2, 2017. Pop Art is one of the most influential art movements since 1945 with a fundamental element of dialogue between design and art. Pop Art Design features artworks from international museums by artists Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, Richard Hamilton, and more; juxtaposed design objects by designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Achille Castiglioni, and Ettore Sottsass; as well as extensive ephemera. “We are excited to host this international exhibition that examines the intersection between Pop art and design,” stated OCMA Director Page 2

and CEO Todd D. Smith. “OCMA is the only west coast venue for this exhibition, and we are pleased to complement the work in the exhibition with important works from our own collection.” Some of the highlights of the exhibition include George Nelson’s Marshmallow Sofa (1955); Andy Warhol’s iconic Campbell’s Soup Cans II (1969); Studio 65’s Leonardo sofa which has rarely been exhibited since it was first produced in 1969; Allen Jones’s provocative Chair (1969); Verner Panton’s Cone Armchair K3 (1959); Superstudio’s Passiflora floor or wall lamp (1966), and notable album covers from the 1960s. OCMA will enhance the exhibition with several original artworks from its own collection including paintings by Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and Ed Ruscha, as well as iconic sculptures such as Wedding Souvenir (1966) by Claes Oldenberg and Eraser (1967) by Vija Celmins. “Vibrant and innovative, while also a playful commentary on consumer culture, this exhibition demonstrates the extraordinary influence of the Pop sensibility on all aspects of day to day life,” stated OCMA Senior Curator Cassandra Coblentz. Pop Art’s influence on furniture, graphic design, and architecture has until this point received limited attention. This exhibition unites

The Coto de Caza News

artworks and design objects, along with photographs, documents, films, and texts. With this variety of material, Pop Art Design demonstrates how design in the early 1950s anticipated later elements of Pop Art when both artists and designers explored the motifs of the emerging consumer society. Objects of daily use were transformed into artistic pictorial motifs and sculptures while designers, in turn, availed themselves of artistic strategies like quotation, collage, and irony to develop a new aesthetic for everyday objects. Pop Art shaped a new sense of cultural identity, with a focus on celebrity, mass consumer production, and the expanding industries of advertising, television, radio and print media. Pop Art Design offers new

insights into the pop phenomenon: the migration of motifs between art and design; the relationship between everyday object and image; and how everyday life first came under the still-dominant influence of pop culture. OCMA INFORMATION Wednesday – Sunday, 11 am – 5 pm; with extended hours Friday, 11 am – 8 pm. Admission: Adults $10, seniors and students $7.50, children 12 and under are free. Fridays are free to the public and parking is always free. Orange County Museum of Art is located at 850 San Clemente Drive in Newport Beach, CA. For additional information, call 949.759.1122 or visit www.ocma.net.

F o r g e t p o s t- h o l i day s a l e s : Find the best deals at local boat shows Post-holiday sales aren’t the only deals to be found during the winter months. Starting in January, boat shows take place across the country. They offer some of the best pricing and incentives of the year - a major draw for the millions of Americans who take to the water each year on more than 12 million boats in the U.S. , according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association. For those ready to plan their summer fun, boat shows are often the place to start. Whether it’s fishing, sailing, cruising, riding personal watercraft, wakesurfing or tubing - boat shows have it all and create a unique shopping experience with hundreds of boats are under one roof to board, browse and buy. However, most people don’t know about the special pricing, incentives and perks these events offer. Discover Boating, the national awareness program to help get people on the water, offers five tips to find the best deal at your local boat show. * Find your virtual dreamboat. Before visiting a boat show, you’ll want to know which boats to shop. Start your search online with DiscoverBoating. com’s Boat Selector to identify which boat types fit your lifestyle, interests, and budget. Plug in your preferences for on-water activities, number of passengers, boat length, price range and propulsion, to narrow down boat options before heading to your local boat show. * Warm up with hot deals. Unlike auto shows, boat shows are the place to buy. Hundreds of new-year models are available to buy right at the show, often at some of the

best prices of the year as exhibitors generally offer special show pricing or other incentives. Plus, it’s the perfect time to order a new boat to ensure it arrives ready to launch in spring. *Make the most of show pricing. It helps to know what fits in your budget before shopping a show. Use this boat loan calculator on DiscoverBoating. com to estimate monthly payments, which can be as low as $250 a month or less. * Try out the boating lifestyle. Boat shows are a great place for beginners to learn about boating and for more experienced captains to hone their skills, plus they offer lots of fun and interactive activities for the whole family. Look for boat shows that offer knot-tying, DIY boat maintenance, a sailing simulator, remote control docking ponds, virtual boating simulators, paddlesports pools, fishing for kids and much more. It’s not only fun to learn new skills, but smart to take advantage of the onsite training boat shows offer

usually at little to no cost. Plus, it’s a great place to meet other boaters as many make their local boat show a winter rendezvous. * Look for the seal of approval. When shopping for a boat at a show, online or at a dealership, always check to make sure it is certified by the National Marine Manufacturers Association. An “NMMA Certified” seal means a boat has met strict industry standards for safety, construction and federal regulations, ensuring the best quality to the buyer. Look for the NMMA certified sticker near the helm. Boat shows not only offer the best deals of the year, but they are also a way to learn how to get on the water, while enjoying a taste of summer boating during the off season. Visit DiscoverBoating.com to find a boat show near you, a list of certified dealers and manufacturers, and unbiased advice for getting started in boating. - (BPT)

DECEMBER CHRISTMAS EVENT CAPS OFF ELK’S LODGE YEAR OF GIVING By Andy Costello December is always extra busy as Mission Viejo / Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge #2444 hosts a Christmas party for the developmentally challenged men, women and children of the Saddleback Valley. The Elks Lodge was once again decorated in it’s finest and full of the holiday spirit as the members played host to 194 special guests. The guests ranged in age from sixteen to sixty-six. They entered the Lodge in groups - some walked, some shuffled, some used walkers and many came in wheel chairs with the help of their caregivers. Faces lit with excitement as they were all warmly embraced at the Lodge entrance by the Elks cheerful greeters who assisted them into the party. After a lunch of chicken fingers, chips, lemonade and cookies was served, D.J. entertainer Jim Mouth kept the music flowing much to the delight of the merrymakers who sang and danced all afternoon along with old friends and with the Elk volunteers. Elk members, part of the Square Dance Club, put on a square dance exhibition. The Laguna Woods “Clown Alley” clowns were again on hand in full regalia passing out balloon hats and bringing smiles to the faces of the party-goers. Shortly after noon, a big red fire truck arrived with sirens blaring. Riding atop the truck, and waving to all as the truck pulled up to the Elks Lodge, was none other than Santa Claus Ed Mackay & Mrs. Claus Elk Pam Mackay. The jolly couple was met at the steps of the Lodge by a large enthusiastic group of the party-goers. They then worked their way through the crowded dance floor with many hugs and warm greetings for all before retreating to a special room to make ready for the individual visits. Each guest enjoyed his or her own personal time with Santa and received a bag full of gifts. Elk photographers Dan Dean and Dave Anderson again worked their magic and provided framed color photos taken with Santa and Mrs.

Claus for each guest. Elk Les Stipek with wife Maggie chaired the event. Stipek offered a special thanks to the Elks Bingo Charity committee for their ongoing sponsorship and said, “It takes a small army of Elks volunteers to make this happen and I can’t thank them enough.” At day’s end, a very tired but still glowing Santa said, “It’s organized mayhem, but as usual we somehow manage to pull it off. We just love seeing so many smiles and how much happiness the party brings to these wonderful people.” Past Lodge President Charlie Hart, a veteran worker at the event said, “I wouldn’t miss being here every year. Some of these same special guests have been attending this party for 25 years and look forward to returning each year. Our Elk’s members do whatever it takes to give them a fun day at the Lodge.” This year’s Elk helpers included: Ed & Pam Mackey, Pat & Barbara Martino, Gloria LeCouvre, Debby King, Charlie Hart, Jesse & JoAnn Hunt, Sandie McClure, Diana Wilson, Jinnae Wessling, Margie Brown, Harvey, Dennis & Keyeigh Boelts, Michael Mandell, Pauline Correa, Dinah Grosch, Dan & Salli Dean, David Anderson, Julie Thomas, Gail Patti, Debbie Lamb, Mike & Judy Klinger, Doug & Janelle Olson, Mary Ann and Andy Costello, Barbara King, Janie Farris, Kay & Ed Guthrie, Brian, Erin, Zach & Nate Johansen, Larry Colgan, Jesse & John Hunt, Jerry Buford, Caren Bowman, Dave Maurer, Alejandra Payne, Fran Baum, Lane Karen, Logan Thompson, Margo Kutner, Jim Humphrey, Gary Stewart, Leah Faase, Sandy Bergan, Vera Pavelec, Craig & Nancy Drennon, Jean Chapman, and Cynthia Ross. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) has a long standing support structure for the developmentally challenged and has a 148 year history of giving. “Elks Care, Elks Share.”

Celebrity Homes : Zsa Zsa Gabor ’s Bel Air Mansion Zsa Zsa Gabor sold her Bel Air mansion in 2014 but the buyer delayed the closing so that she could continue to live in the home until her death. Zsa Zsa’s home is featured this week at TopTenRealEstateDeals. com. “I am a marvelous housekeeper. Every time I leave a man, I keep his house” was one of Zsa Zsa Gabor’s famous quotes. She was married nine times. Zsa Zsa was born in Budapest in 1917 during World War I, became an actress in Vienna at age 15 and was crowned Miss Hungary in 1936. She eventually moved to the United States along with her two sisters (sister Eva starred in the longtime TV hit “Green Acres” and sister Magna married Zsa Zsa’s third husband George Sanders). Her beauty was legendary, her personality bubbly and her accent forever famous. Her nine husbands included Paris Hilton’s great uncle Conrad Hilton and Jack Ryan, the inventor of the Barbie Doll. Zsa Zsa was one of the last of the Hollywood Golden Age movie stars when she died on December 18th. Zsa Zsa purchased her final home in 1973 in Bel Air, California for $250,000. It spanned 9,000 square feet with six bedrooms, seven bathrooms and large pool terrace with stunning views. There are several versions of the home’s history, including that it was built by John Zurlo, who was a Los Angeles milkman who would get up at 3 in the morning and drive out of Bel Air in his milk truck. It seems that Mr. Zurlo eventually rented the home to Howard Hughes for most of the 1960s. According to Zsa Zsa, the house was also owned by Elvis Presley. House guests included John Kennedy, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Ronald Reagan, Henry Kissinger

and both George H. and George W. Bush. The home has its own movie history having been the film site in a number of movies including “Argo” and “Behind the Candelabra.” But despite the all-star credibility, Zsa Zsa couldn’t seem to sell it. She put the home on the market in June, 2011, and it became an ongoing saga. Zsa Zsa originally wanted $28 million for her home but in a bad real estate market, her agent convinced her to start out at $12.9 million for the 8,878-square-foot estate. But she had no takers so she upped the price to $14.9 million. With mounting money problems due to her poor health and a $10 million Bernie Madoff theft, the home was on the brink of foreclosure, only to be saved through a social media plea from ninth husband Prince Frederic von Anhalt. The prince temporarily rescued the home for Zsa Zsa but he made selling the home much more difficult in the process by making demands that

after selling the home, he and Zsa Zsa could continue to live in the home for three years plus a $325,000 a year stipend. Surprisingly the property sold under those conditions, but the sale fell through. Afterwards, broker Roger Perry helped arrange a deal between Gabor and a buyer that delayed the closing so that she could continue to live in the home until her death. Now after her death, the developers

are mulling two options. They will either resell the property with the construction permits in place, or tear it down and redevelop the property. In either case, Prince Frederic von Anhalt will have to find a new place to live. Visit TopTenRealEstateDeals. com for more historic, celebrity and spectacular homes and real estate news.

Segerstrom Center Welcomes Rita Wilson and Friends with All New Production of Liner Notes: Songwriters, Stories and Music Segerstrom Center for the Arts welcomes Rita Wilson, the talented actress, film producer and Broadway star, who brings her vocal and songwriting talents to Samueli Theater in her Center debut with Liner Notes: Songwriters, Stories and Music, on Friday, February 10, 2017. Special guests and notable songwriters Billy Steinberg, Holly Knight and Desmond Child join Wilson in this intimate evening performing songs and sharing stories behind their most memorable music. Tickets start at $59 and will go on sale Sunday, December 18 at 10 a.m. and be available online at www.SCFTA.org, at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 556-2787. Rita Wilson is well-known as an actress (It’s Complicated, Sleepless in Seattle, a recurring role in CBS’s The Good Wife, HBO’s award-winning series, Girls, and most recently on Broadway in Larry David’s smash hit, Fish in the Dark), and as a film producer (Mamma Mia!, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and its sequel, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, for which she co-wrote and performed Even More Mine) but her first love is music. In May 2012, Wilson realized a lifelong dream with the debut of her solo album AM/FM. The album, released by Decca/Verve Records, is an intimate, elegant and beautifully sung collection of covers of her favorite songs from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Since the release of AM/FM, Wilson has been focusing on a new component of her musical career as a songwriter. In March 2016, she released her self-titled second album, showcasing her skill for creating insightful, eloquent singer-songwriter pop music that is etched with stunning honesty. For two years prior to the release, Wilson worked with a host of the finest award-winning and bestselling songwriters and producers in both Los Angeles and Nashville. This new material was prominently featured in her sold-out two-week residency at the famed Café Carlyle in New York City. “Ms. Wilson has a catch in her voice that conveys yearning and potential heartbreak behind a façade of cheer. As a stage performer, she is gregarious and forthright; a natural entertainer,” said The New York Times. In June 2016, Wilson toured with Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famers Chicago, one of the bestselling bands of all time, with more than 100 million albums sold. Billy Steinberg co-wrote (with Tom Kelly) five #1 singles on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, including “Like A Virgin” (Madonna), “True Colors” (Cyndi Lauper), “So Emotional” (Whitney Houston), “Eternal Flame” (The Bangles) and “Alone” (Heart). Holly Knight has had a wild 38year ride in the music business that ignited when she joined her first band, Spider, in 1980. She penned many of their songs, including the single, “Better Be Good To Me,” which music icon Tina Turner recorded on her multi-platinum record, Private Dancer. Knight has written a total of nine songs for Turner alone, including “The Best,” “Better Be Good To Me” and “Wildest Dreams.” Her songwriting has earned her numerous awards, including three Grammys and 13 ASCAP awards. In June of 2013, Knight was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame along with rock legends Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Foreigner, and JD Souther. Knight’s songs have appeared in countless movies such as: Thelma and Louise, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, Stewart Little, Hot Tub Time Machine, Dallas Buyer’s Club, The Other Woman, Anchorman 2, 13 Going on 30 and TV shows, American Idol, The Voice, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Late Show with James Corden, The Following, Nip/Tuck, Necessary Roughness, Mr. Robot, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, Family Guy, The Simpsons, South Park and many more. TAX PLANNING STRATEGIES FOR 2016 FROM KIM COYLE CPA

Dear Client; As the end of the year approaches, it’s a good time to think of planning strategies that will help lowering your taxes for 2016. My goal is for you to leverage your tax deductions and credit to the fullest extent. I want to briefly discuss five different strategies that can be powerful tools in lowering your tax bill. And the really great part is that each of these strategies is easy to understand and implement. Here are the strategies: 1. Prepay Expenses The IRS allows cash-basis taxpayers to prepay and deduct qualifying expenses up to 12 months in advance (through December 2017) without challenge, adjustment, or change by the IRS. For a cash-basis taxpayer, qualifying expenses include lease payment on business vehicles, rent payments on offices and machinery, and business and malpractice insurance premiums. This is a great way to pump up your 2016 deductions with expenses you will eventually pay anyway. 2. Stop Billing Customers and Patients An easy strategy for reducing your taxable income for this year is to stop billing your customers until December 31, 2016. Customers, patients, and insurance companies generally don’t pay until billed. Not billing customers and patients is a time-tested tax planning strategy that business owner have used successfully for years. 3. Buy Office Equipment With Section 179, you can write off up to $500,000 of office equipment in 2016. Qualifying Section 179 purchases include new and used personal property such as equipment, computers, desks, chairs, and certain qualifying vehicles. To qualify for Section 179, you need to both buy the items and put them in business service on or before midnight December 31, 2016. 4. Use Your Credit Cards If you are a sole proprietor, the day you charge a purchase to your business or personal credit card is the day the expense is deductible, Therefore, as a proprietor, consider using your credit cards to buy office supplies and other business necessities. If you operate your business as a corporation, and if the corporation has a credit card in the corporate name, the same rule applies: the date of charge is the date of deduction for the corporation. But if you operate your business as a corporation and you are the personal owner of the credit card, the corporation must reimburse you if you want the corporation to realize the tax deduction, and that happens on the date of reimbursement. Thus, submit your expense report and have your corporation make its reimbursements to you before midnight on December 31. 5. Don’t Assume You Are Taking Too Many Deductions Make sure your record all of your rightful deductions for 2016, because if your business deductions exceed your business income, you have a tax loss for the year. After a few modifications to the loss, tax law calls this a “net operating loss,” or an NOL. The good news is that tax law allows you to carry back the NOL for two years and get instant refunds from taxes previously paid. If, after going back for two years, you still have unused losses, you can carry them forward for up to 20 years. In other words, you have a 22-year window during which you can realize the benefits of your deductions. So always document your expenses in order to get your rightful deductions. Please do not hesitate contact me if you want to discuss in greater depth any of the strategies outlined above.

Saturday Night Speakeasy Raises nearly $250,000 for Childhelp Orange County The Orange County Chapter of Childhelp celebrated their 3rd annual Fall Soiree, A Saturday Night Speakeasy, at the Balboa Bay Resort that included a Silent and Live Auction, Raffle Drawing, Dancing, Cigars and Gaming Tables. The event raised nearly $250,000! The almost 300 guests, donned in prohibition era attire, entered through the faux brick backdrop complete with a secret password required entrance. Whiskey, provided by Country Smooth, was flowing freely as guests were bidding on the Silent Auction prizes and purchasing Raffle Tickets to win a $2,500 South Coast Plaza Shopping Spree with Valet Parking. The event was Co-Chaired by Linda Burns, Veronica Meshkati and Shan Vincent. Heading up the Men’s Committee was Mark Adams, Kristen James and Bud Pharris. Jamie Hong then introduced her Mother, Eileen Saul, and presented her with the Benevolent Heart Award for her endless dedication and commitment to Childhelp. Eileen gave a very heartfelt speech and shared how proud she is that Childhelp’s Annual Golf Tournament is now the Rich Saul Memorial Golf Classic in honor of her late husband, Rich. Party revelers then dined on Pan Seared Filet Mignon and Chilean Sea Bass with a cognac peppercorn sauce and finished with Red Velvet Cake with a White Chocolate Mousse. After the auction, Sean Tolliver, a graduate of the Childhelp Boys’ Group Home, spoke emotionally about his abuse as a child and how he was so positively influenced by the love, care and therapy provided by Childhelp. He thanked everyone in the ballroom that evening for being there and helping raise much needed funds. The night concluded with gambling and lots of dancing. 4 small diet changes that can make a big difference

The new year is a great time to start fresh. Many people commit to exercise more, stress less or make healthier food choices. Incorporating small, sustainable changes, versus dramatic, large-scale lifestyle shifts, can make it much easier to stick to your resolutions. This year, instead of overhauling your entire diet, resolve to improve your health with simple tweaks to your everyday meal and snacking routine. Eat the rainbow Adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet is an effortless way to boost your intake of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Try to eat one produce item from each color in the rainbow every day. For example, have blueberries in your breakfast oatmeal, a red apple for a snack, a spinach and radicchio salad with yellow peppers for lunch and sweet potatoes as part of dinner. You could also pack red bell peppers and carrots with creamy garlic hummus or a banana for a convenient pick-me-up between meals. Adopt a smoothie regimen Another easy way to consume more fruits and vegetables - as well as other healthy ingredients like nut and soy milk, yogurt, chia or flax seeds - is to start your day with a nutrient-packed smoothie. Smoothies can be a convenient, on-the-go,

energy-boosting breakfast for adults and kids alike. Create personalized flavor combinations for every member of the family. If you have a sweet tooth, try a red cherry smoothie, bursting with the flavors of cherry, strawberry and grapes. Or, blend in antioxidant-rich kale or other dark leafy greens for an extra serving of vegetables. Choose healthy fats The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend getting most of the fat in your diet from unsaturated fats, which can be found in foods such as fish, nuts, seeds and certain types of oils. Monounsaturated fats, from sunflower oil, canola oil and avocado, and polyunsaturated fats, like soybean oil, walnuts and flax seed, are sometimes called “good fats” because they are heart-healthy and can help lower cholesterol. Add these healthy fats into your meals: use avocado to cool spicy entrees; top salads with walnuts, sunflower or pumpkin seeds for an extra crunch; and cook with canola or olive oil. Fats are essential for your body to function properly, so choose ones that taste great and provide energy and nutrients. Make smart substitutions Another simple way to change your diet is to sub in healthier options. There are many ways to adapt recipes

that will increase their nutritional content without sacrificing taste. Replace the typical carbohydrates with vegetables: try crispy, baked zucchini sticks in place of french fries or spaghetti squash instead of traditional pasta. Secretly swap ingredients for more wholesome alternatives in your favorite recipes: substitute Greek yogurt in place of full-fat sour cream in dips and sauces or make a cauliflower-based pizza crust, instead of a flour one, for a more nutritious version of a favorite comfort food. With the right preparation and seasonings, your family will never notice the difference. When it comes to incorporating changes into your lifestyle, it’s important to start slowly and make

realistic choices. Don’t be discouraged if you have minor setbacks. With just a few modifications to your daily meals, you can achieve better health in the new year. Red Cherry Smoothie Ingredients: 1/2 cup (60 g) low-fat cherry yogurt 1 cup (76 g) fresh strawberries, quartered 2/3 cup (50 g) red grapes 1 cup (70 g) fresh cherries, pitted 1/2 cup (60 ml) cherry juice Directions: Place all ingredients into a blender and secure lid. Turn the dial to low and slowly increase speed. Blend for 35 seconds or until desired consistency is reached.

Tips for keeping kids’ minds and bodies active through cooler months The sunny days of summer may seem like a distant memory, but as tempting as it is to let the kids curl up on the couch when they’re home, it’s important to keep them active throughout the cooler months. Even as days get shorter, you can still use those free hours to stay energetic and fuel their curiosity. Whether your child is a bookworm, an artist or an athlete, here are some tips for keeping kids’ minds and bodies active during fall and winter. 1. Fuel their bodies and minds The hours between lunch and dinner can give way to an afternoon energy slump. Give kids the fuel they need for afternoon activities by providing a sensible snack that’s low in sugar and a source of protein for steady energy. Like cheese crackers or peanutbutter and celery. 2. Befriend Mother Nature Young minds love to explore, and

Mother Nature provides the perfect backdrop for discovery any time of year. Bundle up and head to a local park or conservation area. You can even plan a scavenger hunt featuring local flora and fauna like acorns, fallen tree leaves, feathers, etc. For younger kids, focus the hunt on items of different colors - so they can easily find a green, yellow or brown item. Older kids might like to try their hand at geocaching - learning to navigate GPS coordinates to reach a buried “treasure.” 3. Grow something green Dirty hands are a good thing when kids are learning to care for plants. Let your young ones plant an herb garden in a warm windowsill. First, go to the library and collect some basic gardening books. Kids can read and choose their favorite plants. Give kids different responsibilities for planting and watering to demonstrate the importance of teamwork. Even throughout the winter you can reap the rewards of fresh herbs for the dinner table. 4. Keep moving all year round Research has found that the winter

months often result in a decrease in kids’ physical activity levels. Don’t let cooler temperatures keep your family from staying active. Lots of team sports, such as football or even baseball, can be fun year-round with the right clothing. If you’re in a part of the country that gets a lot of snow, you can choose from winter sports, such as skiing, ice skating or snowshoeing to keep active. Don’t forget the best part after an active day in the cold warming up over a hot mug of cocoa.

5. Get artsy with DIY puppets With some paper bags, socks, glue, beads, buttons and other materials found around the house, kids can create their own puppets. Have them make favorite animals or popular characters from a beloved book. Don’t stop after the glue has dried - inspire creative play by having them enact their own puppet show. Even during the cooler months, don’t let those open afternoons and weekends go to waste.

The Coto de Caza News

Help your pet shed unhealthy weight Are you killing your pet with kindness? We’re not talking about the compassion that motivates us to vaccinate our pets, or keep them warm in cold weather. Kindness that can be harmful to pets comes in the form of an overabundance of food and treats. The all-too-common result is a pet that becomes overweight or even obese. A survey conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention found 52.5 percent of dogs and 58.3 percent of cats to be overweight or obese by their veterinarian. This translates to nearly 80 million dogs and cats in America with a weight problem. Dr. George Banta, chair of the Veterinary Technology department at Brown Mackie College - Akron and Dr. Mary Jo Wagner, attending veterinarian at Argosy University, Twin Cities, offer useful information for pet owners. How can you tell if your pet is overweight? “It’s not the number of pounds, it’s how the animal carries the weight,” says Banta. “The number on the Body Condition Score is more important than pounds.” The Body Condition Score offers a way to assess the condition of an animal,

usually on a scale from one to five, taking into account height, weight, and relative proportions of muscle and fat. With a little knowledge, you can use sight and touch to figure your pet’s general condition. “When looking down on a dog or cat from above,” says Banta, “the body should slim to a discernable waist. An animal is too thin if you can see the spine or ribs; however, you should be able to feel them beneath the fur.” An animal of ideal weight will also display a pelvic tuck when viewed from the side. “Just like humans, when animals overeat, they face increased risk for health problems like diabetes, heart disease, gastrointestinal problems and cancer,” continues Banta. In fact, these risks also include a shortened life expectancy. Many owners feed pets according to the manufacturer’s suggested amounts; however, this instruction may not be right for your pet. “These guidelines are meant to cover all animals of a certain weight range,” says Wagner. “An owner must consider the age and activity level of each pet. The more active they are, the more calories they will burn

in a day.” Metabolism rates vary in animals the same way they do in people. Metabolism is the body process in which food is broken down for energy; another factor that affects the amount of food a pet needs. Wagner advises owners to keep an eye on body condition to judge whether a pet is eating properly. “If your pet shows signs of being overweight, simply cut back the amount of food given at each meal. Then weigh the pet in two or three weeks to see if it has made a difference,” she says. Choosing the right food for your pet is important as well. Different brands of pet food contain varying amounts of protein, fat, carbohydrates and calories. “As a general rule, young, active dogs need high protein food,” says Wagner. “Older dogs need higher fiber to keep the gastrointestinal (GI) tract moving.” Ingredients listed on the package appear in descending order of volume; the first item on the list is most abundant in the food. Most of us love to give treats, but many of us don’t realize how many we offer each day. “A 40-pound dog is one quarter the size of a 160-pound person,” Wagner says. “They have

smaller stomachs. Look at calories in everything your pet eats. After that, it’s simple math.” “Table scraps are a definite no. Zip, zilch, nada,” says Banta. “They are not good for two reasons. First, foods like chocolate, caffeine, grapes and raisins can be toxic to dogs. Second, the high fat content associated with table scraps, especially holiday trimmings, can lead to the onset of acute pancreatitis, which can be fatal.” He recommends offering a kibble of food or a carrot instead of a cookie. If you must give cookies, try breaking them in half. “Pets do enjoy treats as a reward; however, attention from you is also a reward. It’s important to praise animals. In some ways, spending time with them is better than a treat,” Wagner says.

Stress management tactics for an improved self, inside and out

There are moments when stress takes over all aspects of life, both personal and professional. The to-do list feels never ending; there are never enough hours in the day; and the challenges appear insurmountable. Feeling stressed is a normal response to demands encountered on emotional, intellectual and physical levels, and often manifests itself physically in many different ways - especially in the appearance of skin. Positively managing stress is essential to achieving a balanced lifestyle and naturally healthy-looking skin. By focusing on different lifestyle choices that can impact skin like diet, fitness and stress management, women can look beyond their typical skincare routine for ways to improve their skin’s health and overall well-being. Women can embody the holistic approach to skincare in every way possible. When it comes to ingredients, what Page 24

is left out is just as important as what is put in. Look for products contain no dyes, no artificial perfumes or harsh chemicals that can upset skin, just the purest possible ingredients for natural, healthylooking skin. Dr. Josie Howard, is a board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in psychodermatology, an area of medicine that focuses on the relationship between stress, emotional well-being and skin health. Below are Dr. Howard’s top tips for effectively and constructively managing stress to help minimize the effects it can have on your skin. * Take a breather: Resting your body and mind is crucial to regulating blood flow and circulation, both of which are essential in achieving naturally healthy-looking skin. When you feel unusually anxious and stressed out, it may be a sign of exhaustion or fatigue. Find a calm and quiet space and take a few moments to “take a breather,” by meditating, napping or even just pausing from the busy day. Allowing both body and mind to take a break will keep your body feeling more regulated and your skin looking beautiful. Closing your eyes and focusing on the sounds and smells that surround you in that moment is a great way to center yourself in the present; a scented candle and soft music can be of great assistance with this exercise. * Create a relaxation routine: Stress has a big influence on the health and appearance of skin and can show itself in many ways. When you are stressed, hormones in the body become thrown off balance. As a result, your skin’s ability to protect itself against environmental pollutants and irritants

The Coto de Caza News

becomes compromised, leaving the skin more prone to breakouts, irritation and dehydration. There are many ways to create a sense of calm when things become stressful - listening to music, writing in a journal, or practicing yoga are great ways to constructively unwind. The trick is to pick an activity that works best for you and be sure to proactively make that practice a priority every day to effectively combat stress and improve your overall skin health. Say it with a smile: Any level of emotional stress we experience can readily be detected on our face, whether it is seen through breakouts, irritation and even blushing. When we smile, we not only look better, less tired and more refreshed, but our brains also interpret this as a signal that we actually are feeling happy and content. Moreover, smiling can help others react to us in a more positive way, which can lead to less stressful experiences overall. Take adequate rest: The notion of “beauty sleep” is not a myth: deep, restorative sleep is essential for growth hormone release, which is necessary for effective tissue repair in the skin. Stress can impair sleep quality, leading to a cascade of hormonal consequences that result in unwanted physical results - unhealthy food choices, weight gain and puffy skin. Over time, chronic sleep deprivation can leave skin looking pale and haggard, reducing its natural protective qualities. Dr. Howard advises removing electronics (even smartphones!) from the bedroom to keep stress triggers at bay and to step away from the computer and other electronic devices at least one hour before bedtime.

Massage tips to help ease your over-active muscles Living an active lifestyle is being embraced by both young and old helping to keep bodies healthy and fit. Whether you’re trying a new sport or simply pushing yourself to the next level in your workout routine, you may experience aches and pain in muscles. Did you know massage therapy can help to alleviate discomfort naturally? Here are some- tips for achieving a great massage therapy experience. “It’s important to remember that increasing activity can take a toll on our bodies,” says DeJuan Williams, massage therapy lead instructor at Everest College St. Louis. “While there are many ways to ensure that our muscles, bones and joints stay healthy and injury-free, massage therapy is a great way to decrease stress, improve circulation and minimize fatigue.” Williams offers these tips for achieving the best massage therapy experience: Start slowly. If you’ve been less active, give your body time to adjust and ease into more outdoor activities. “Having patience with your body can help minimize soreness,” says Williams. “You may experience some

discomfort after resuming strenuous outdoor activities, but massage therapy can play a role in providing comfort after an intense day.” Find the right professional.Once you’ve decided to begin massage therapy, find a professional therapist who is licensed, insured and has academic credentials. “Reading online reviews and getting personal recommendations from friends are great sources.” Ensure compatibility. At your first appointment, have a list of questions ready to determine if you’re compatible with the massage therapist. “Ask them before you begin, to ensure you’re comfortable with the therapist,” says Williams. “You should also disclose any current health issues you’re facing, in order to have the safest, most effective session.” Customize your therapy. Discuss with the therapist any massage preferences you have, including depth of pressure, room temperature and music. During the massage, feel free to speak up and let the therapist know if you’d like to adjust any aspects of the therapy. Relax and enjoy. The key to

getting all the benefits of a massage is to relax your body and mind. Stopping or limiting your breathing during a massage can cause you to become tense and potentially hinder the effectiveness of your massage. Especially if a particular muscle or joint area is sensitive from recent outdoor activity, try to breathe normally. Massages should never hurt, so be sure to communicate any discomfort immediately.

Stay hydrated, stay healthy. Making sure you’re hydrated can help you to feel better pre- and postmassage. Always drink extra fluids before and after massages to ensure that your muscles are hydrated, and to help flush toxins from the body. Just as it’s important to be disciplined with a steady workout regimen, a consistent massage therapy plan can boost your overall health and keep you feeling great.

Entertaining ideas for going Greek (yogurt) Twice the protein, half the carbs, 20 percent of your daily calcium requirement and probiotic cultures that help keep digestive tracts happy - what’s not to love about Greek yogurt? For some who resist making the switch from regular to Greek yogurt, it boils down to taste. Some people find the strong flavor of this nutritional powerhouse to be a bit ... well, too strong! “Even if you’re not a fan of Greek yogurt’s distinctive flavor for snacking or breakfast purposes, you can still tap the health benefits of this popular dairy product,” says Laurie McNamara, author of the blog Simply Scratch. “You can incorporate Greek yogurt into a variety of recipes by using it to replace less healthful options like sour cream and mayo, or less nutritionally powerful ones like regular yogurt.” The approaching holidays are a perfect opportunity to begin incorporating Greek yogurt into your family’s diets - and your entertaining menus. It’s possible to reap the health benefits of this super food in every course of your holiday meals. Appetizers What holiday buffet - or other occasion, for that matter - would be complete without a veggie tray and dip? Store-bought dips are often loaded with preservatives, sugar, salt and/or fatty ingredients. Making your own is a great way to reduce fat and calories, amp up nutritional value and ensure fresh, organic flavor. McNamara has partnered with Simply Organic, purveyors of quality organic seasonings, to create ideas for serving Simply Organic Greek Yogurt Dip Mixes. Dips made with Greek yogurt add zest to vegetable platters, and can be a healthier complement to more decadent treats like chips and pretzels. The dip seasonings can also pair with Greek yogurt in other appetizers, too. “If a recipe calls for regular yogurt or sour cream, you can substitute Greek yogurt,” McNamara says.

Page 28

Try this recipe for a flavorful dish that can work on an hors d’oeuvres table or as an appetizer on a buffet. Spinach and bacon-stuffed mushrooms Ingredients 1 package-(16 ounces) baby portabella mushrooms (about 20 baby bellas) 1 1/4 cups plain nonfat Greek yogurt4 tablespoons-turkey bacon, cooked and crumbled (about four slices) 4 tablespoons-finely shredded 2 percent milk Colby Jack cheese 1 package-Simply Organic Zesty Spinach Dip Mix 1 1/2 teaspoons-fine bread crumbs Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray a large glass baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Remove stems and scrape out gills of mushrooms with a spoon, being careful not to puncture caps of mushrooms. In a large bowl, combine yogurt,

The Coto de Caza News

bacon, cheese and dip mix until evenly mixed. Stuff mushroom caps with yogurt mixture, and sprinkle with bread crumbs. Place mushroom caps in baking dish and bake for about 20 minutes, until the filling is hot and bubbly. Entrees and sides Think of all the dishes that call for sour cream, milk, heavy cream or regular plain yogurt. From mashed potatoes and chicken salad to soups and marinades for meats, Greek yogurt can replace those less healthful ingredients, allowing you to reap its health benefits while making the flavor subtle (or even undetectable) and enjoyable. And you don’t need to confine yourself to Greek recipes; Greek yogurt works regardless of a dish’s ethnic origins. Here’s a recipe from Simply Organic in which Greek yogurt cuts the fat in a traditional Hungarian classic: Smoky chicken paprikash Ingredients 2 -8-ounce chicken breasts, skinless and boneless 2 tablespoons-ground flax seed 1 tablespoon-all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon-smoked salt 1/8 teaspoon-cayenne 1/4 teaspoon-finely ground black pepper 1 tablespoon-smoked paprika, divided 1/2 teaspoon-garlic granules 1/2 -white onion, chopped 1/2 -red bell pepper, chopped 1/2 -yellow bell pepper, chopped 1/2 cup-sliced mushrooms 1 -tomato, chopped 1/2 cup-chicken broth (made with chicken flavored broth powder) 3/4 cup-non-fat plain Greek yogurt 1/2 teaspoon-lemon juice 1/4 teaspoon-cornstarch

Directions Preheat oven to 375 degrees and spray an 11-by-7-inch baking dish with non-stick spray. Combine ground flax seed, flour, salt, cayenne, black pepper, 1 teaspoon smoked paprika and garlic granules in a small bowl. Dredge chicken pieces in dry mixture and place in non-stick pan. Surround chicken breasts with onion, red bell pepper, yellow bell pepper, mushrooms and tomato. Pour chicken broth over chicken and vegetables, then evenly sprinkle vegetables and chicken with remaining smoked paprika. Cover baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for about 30 to 35 minutes or until done. Chicken’s internal temperature should be at least 165 degrees when done. Combine Greek yogurt and lemon juice in a saucepan. In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and 1/2 cup liquid mixture from baking dish. Stir into yogurt and lemon juice and cook, stirring constantly, until slightly thickened, about five minutes. Pour yogurt sauce over chicken and vegetables. Desserts Cakes, bread puddings, pies - even cookies - practically any holiday dessert can work with Greek yogurt as an ingredient. Vegetarians and vegans have been replacing eggs with regular yogurt for years, and Greek yogurt is an even healthier substitution. Generally, if your recipe calls for a cup of creme fraiche, sour cream, mayonnaise or cream cheese, you can substitute a cup of Greek yogurt. It’s also a great-tasting, creamy and healthier alternative for homemade frozen yogurt. -(BPT)

The best wearable tech devices to help you look and feel better

Wearable health technology first started in hospitals as a way to help people with injuries heal faster. Now, the trend has gone mainstream and pro-active; one in five online adults uses a wearable device, and the majority of those devices are health-related, according to Forrester Research. “Americans are using a variety of wearable devices to help them reach their wellness goals,” says Mike Nohilly, an expert in wearable technology for Slendertone. Once, people would have needed a doctor’s visit to find out key wellness numbers like BMI or blood pressure, or needed gym equipment to monitor their heart rates while exercising. Wearable devices allow them to do all those things, and even tone specific muscle groups, at their own convenience.” Here are five wearable health devices and how you can use them to help build fitness and better health: * Fitness trackers - If it seems like everyone is wearing some kind of fitness tracker, you’re not imagining it. The top wearable of 2016 was a fitness tracker that shipped more than 21 million units last year and represented nearly 38 percent of the wearables market, according to International Data Corporation. Fitness trackers allow wearers to monitor key health indicators such as heart rate or calories burned. You can also use them to set and track exercise goals, such as walking a certain number of steps per day, or monitor your heart rate while exercising to ensure you reach a target zone. * Pain relief braces - Worn like traditional braces, smart braces use neurostimulation sensors, built into the fabric, to ease pain with low-level electrical impulses. Wearers rely on the bands to help relieve joint pain from chronic conditions like arthritis. Some come with a smartphone app that allows you to track usage and sleep patterns. * Ab toner - Instead of spending hours in the gym doing crunches, you can enhance your workout by wearing a piece of technology that

works to strengthen, firm and tone your abs. The Slendertone Connect Abs wearable belt uses electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) to stimulate the major abdominal muscles, and can be worn and used at any time even under your clothes. Users report visible results in six to eight weeks when used at least five days per week for 30 minutes. You can control this FDA-cleared device through an app on Android or Apple smartphones, and choose one of five goal-driven programs, from essential toning to post-natal and even advanced toning. The app also tracks and shares data on your progress. Visit www. slendertone.com. * Sleep trackers - Getting the right amount of sleep is critical for overall health, so sleep trackers have gained popularity as aids to help people get better rest. Many types are available and some are wearable. Sleep trackers monitor such sleep metrics as REM phases, how long per night you spend in light sleep versus deep sleep, wake times, how quickly you fall asleep, what time you sleep each night and more. * UV detector - An emerging form of wearable technology, UV detectors monitor skin exposure to harmful ultra-violet radiation - the portion of sunlight that causes sunburn, tanning and skin cancer. Multiple versions are under development, and one commercially available detector is a small patch that you wear on your skin and then scan using your smartphone that’s been equipped with a special app. The app allows you to read the information recorded in the patch so you know your UV exposure, and offers tips for sun safety, including what level SPF sunscreen you should wear. “Many health care and tech industry watchers say the wearable health care device trend is really just getting started,” Nohilly says. “Technology has great potential to help make it easier than ever to achieve our health and fitness goals, whether we want to get a better night’s rest, improving cardio-vascular health or get toned abs.” - BPT)

The beneficiary under said Deed of Trust heretofore executed and delivered to the undersigned a written Declaration of Default and Demand for Sale, and a written Notice of Default and Election to Sell. The undersigned caused said Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING. COM, using the file number assigned to this case 047571-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. FOR SALES INFORMATION: (844) 477-7869 CLEAR RECON CORP. 4375 Jutland Drive Suite 200 San Diego, California 92117.
