Find Your Influence Style this Year
The ability to influence those around you is a key leadership skill. To influence effectively, you must be adept at getting your opinions and ideas heard, recognized and considered by others. Use the new year as an opportunity to try a new approach to achieve different results when trying to influence those in either the dining room or the boardroom. According to clinical psychologist Dr. Steven Stein, CEO of Multi-Health Systems, influence styles can range from reliance on position and power to education, encouragement and collaboration. Most people rely on pushing or advocating for a position, which can create a tension between parties, Stein said. It immediately draws a line in the sand between the two sides and leaves people feeling unheard and disrespected. Last year, you may have found yourself using these influence techniques: Rationalizing, which is a fact-based approach, is using logical reasoning to convince others of your point of view. When used correctly, rationalizing moves discussion to a less emotional space. It works best when the people involved haven’t already made up their minds about a certain topic. Some people react negatively to this influence style, assuming you value your data more than their feelings. Asserting involves enforcing your dominance through your position or experience to explain why people should believe you. You ask people to comply rather than agree with you. Others can perceive this as aggressive, self-serving and
competitive. If they don’t respect your position, your assertion will fall flat. The turn of a new year might be the time to change up your tactics. To change someone’s mind, you may want to try pulling people toward you and your point of view. If you’re starting on opposite sides of disagreement, find a way to unite the two groups by using these techniques: Bridging entails building communities based on common, mutual interests. Establish trust by listening to what others have to say. Show you’re listening and then try to find something you agree upon. Finding somewhere small to start where you can agree might help you build toward a resolution.
Inspiring entails advocating for your position by encouraging others with a sense of shared purpose and exciting possibilities. Famous leaders, like Steve Jobs, are remembered for rallying their employees with passionate words and empowering people to share the same feelings. This year, if you end up arguing with a relative about politics or a colleague about an aspect of your business, take a step back. After exhausting yourselves with facts and figures, try finding common ground. Learn more about techniques for influencing others at mhs.com. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

Time-saving tricks that save hours each week When you look at your to-do list, does it seem a mile long? From running errands, returning emails and making hurried trips to the ATM, modern life has never been busier for Americans. You can reclaim your day by using a few simple time-saving methods. By simplifying common tasks, you can open up hours each week plus reduce stress levels. The following are some strategies to consider if you want to make a big impact. Handheld financial freedom Need to pay the babysitter, split the lunch bill or send money to your sister for grandma’s birthday gift? No need to run to the ATM. Person-to-person (P2P) payment options make it safe and simple to send money instantly. Gareth Gaston, executive vice president of Omnichannel for U.S. Bank, shared results from the U.S. Bank Cash Behavior survey, which shows that 47 percent of people prefer to use digital apps to make payments versus cash. What’s more, this desire crosses generations, so both boomers and millennials - and everyone in between - want to digitize personal payments. A great, hassle-free option for P2P is Zelle, a payment network backed by leading financial institutions including U.S. Bank. Zelle works through your mobile banking app and allows you to quickly and securely send and receive payments. Plus, once you are registered, there is virtually no waiting period - accounts instantly reflect deposits and transfers. Imagine the time saved when you eliminate lastminute cash runs. Learn more at www.USbank.com/zelle.
Work smarter, not harder Whether you’re a bi-coastal professional or a stay-at-home parent, you have a lot to get done and little time to do it. With some strategic planning, your days will be less hectic while maximizing productivity. Being proactive and organized can save loads of time. For example, on Sunday, organize outfits for the entire week for you and the kids. Another smart tip is to pack lunches, backpacks and briefcases the night prior. Do these things and your mornings will be smooth sailing. Another huge time-saver is how you communicate. Rather than responding to messages as they come, block specific times on your calendar - such as at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. - to respond to communication. When you return emails, calls and texts in batches, you save time over stringing out these activities throughout the day. Bonus tip: For smartphone addicts, make sure you
program autofill words you commonly use to make finger typing lightning fast. Shop savvy and eliminate errands Running around town can eat up a lot of your valuable time. If you can automate deliveries of frequently used items, do it. Common household goods that are always on your list will no longer be a reason that drags you out the door. Additionally, many retailers now offer online order and pickup options. This means you do all your shopping from the comfort of your home or office, and then just swing by the store and they load your bags into your car. No crammed aisles, no long lines, no stress. From eliminating the need for cash on hand to easing email overload, these smart tips will save you time so you can spend your spare moments doing the things you really love. Reclaim your life by adopting these strategies today. - (BPT)

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENTS! Dana is a special 2-year-old calico cat. Found by a Good Samaritan on the side of the I-5 freeway, she was taken to the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center with an injury to her rear leg. After seeing a local veterinarian, Dana was diagnosed with a completely shattered tibia. With no chance of saving the leg, the vet opted to amputate. Dana has healed beautifully since then and has no problem getting around on only three legs. She

PACIFIC SYMPHONY ANNOUNCES FIRST-EVER TOUR TO CHINA
Music Director Carl St.Clair to Conduct Symphony in Five Cultural Centers, May 9-15, 2018
Carl St.Clair
Pinchas Zukerman
Pacific Symphony today announced the details of its first-ever tour to China and first international tour since the Symphony toured European capitals in 2006. The five-city tour launches May 9, 2018 with a concert at the Shanghai Poly Grand Theatre, followed by performances in Hefei (capital of Anhui province), Wuxi (Jiangsu province), Chongqing (major city in southwest China), and Beijing. The final concert takes place at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, colloquially known as “The Giant Egg” due to its distinctive dome-shaped, titanium and glass architecture. The Symphony’s tour will include works by Leonard Bernstein in celebration of his centennial, as well as Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe, Suite No. 2; Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky (arranged by Ravel); and Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3, featuring soloist Pinchas Zukerman. The visit to China follows another important tour this season to New York City for the Orchestra’s Carnegie Hall debut on April 21, 2018. “We are gratified to represent Southern California on this highly anticipated tour,” says Pacific Symphony Music Director Carl St.Clair. “This is an artistic milestone Page 10
for the orchestra, and I couldn’t be more pleased to be leading this exceptional group of musicians on its first tour to China. This is an artistically significant opportunity for Pacific Symphony to embrace cultural diplomacy and to carry the message of music’s universality across the ocean to the other side of the Pacific Rim. The halls we will be playing have all been built within the last ten years. Some of the world’s leading architects have created contemporary temples of music with stunning acoustics that will beautifully showcase the fine playing of our musicians.” Carl St.Clair, who was personally mentored by Leonard Bernstein, will present works in honor of the composer’s centennial. “I have carefully selected the repertoire for this tour to include quintessential American works such as Bernstein’s ‘Slava!,’ ‘Mambo’ and Overture to ‘Candide,’ which show off Pacific Symphony’s energetic spirit and warm sonority.” He continued, “Additionally, we will be performing 18th-, 19thand 20th-century masterworks by Mozart, Mussorgsky and Ravel that display Pacific Symphony’s incredible versatility and virtuosity.” Pacific Symphony President John
The Coto de Caza News
Forsyte said: “We are proud of the role we will be playing as cultural ambassadors for Orange County and the community. As Pacific Symphony looks forward to its 40th anniversary next season, we are gratified by the support we have received from the diverse communities of Orange County over the decades. The county’s Asian-American population is the third largest in the country, and the Chinese community in particular has experienced explosive growth. Since 2013 we have been devoted to engaging with the Chinese communities of the region and building on their enthusiasm for symphonic music. Crossing the Pacific Rim to perform for the Chinese population on the mainland is the logical extension of the work we’ve been doing here in Orange County.” Longtime Pacific Symphony supporters Sandy Segerstrom Daniels and Sally Segerstrom have provided a major lead gift in support of the tour. “The Segerstrom family have been generous patrons throughout the 40-year history of Pacific Symphony. This latest gift is yet another example of their undying generous spirit and ongoing commitment to the unparalleled quality of life in Southern
California. The institution is grateful to Sandy Segerstrom Daniels and Sally Segerstrom for their visionary commitment as lead sponsors of the tour,” commented Joann Leatherby, board chairman. “We are proud to have the opportunity to represent Orange County’s vibrant cultural arts scene to audiences across China.” Pacific Symphony is also announcing it has received a dollarfor-dollar match up to $150,000 to support the tour from Overseas Business Consulting, Inc. Gifts designated to support the tour and received prior to April 30 will qualify for this match. Pinchas Zukerman’s appearances with Pacific Symphony on tour have been generously underwritten by Jerry and Terri Kohl. Additional major support for the tour is provided by Charles and Ling Zhang. Pacific Symphony will be offering a patron tour to China that will include opportunities to customize experiences on the tour. Patrons will engage with musicians in unique cultural setting throughout the tour. More information and pricing will be available in February 2018. Patrons should contact Gary Good at 714876-2360 for further information

mvcs alumni coaches lead team to IMPRESSIVE GAME 1 victory! High school seniors James Williams and Ben Slevin may have graduated from Mission Viejo Christian School (MVCS) in 2014, but they are back on campus in 2018 as coaches for one of the school’s two elementary basketball teams. Under the leadership of Head Coach James Williams and Assistant Coach Ben Slevin, the team had an impressive 38 to 8 victory over St. Catherine’s in their first game of the season. Principal Bob Sladek commented, “As a principal there is no greater joy than to see your graduates advance through their high school years as successfully as James and Ben have! These two young men have taken it to the next level, coming back as coaches and mentors for the students in our school. I could not be prouder of them or more excited for their players. They are not only excellent coaches, but also excellent role models for the 5th & 6th grade players who are competing hard and learning from their example.” Head Coach James Williams, a senior at Tesoro High School, committed to play football at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obipso (Cal Poly, SLO) beginning Fall 2018. He says, “It has been so great to be back on the MVCS campus after going to school there for many years. Sports are a huge part of my life. I had coaches that I looked up to and really admired and by coaching with Ben, I think we can be inspiring to the kids. My experience at MVCS was filled with so many life lessons and even though my job is to coach, I’ve already learned more life lessons from the players than I ever would have expected.” Assistant Coach Ben Slevin agreed, “Upon hearing that I would have the opportunity to coach at MVCS, I was truly ecstatic. Power into a New Year with Protein
If the idea of diving into a new year has you feeling more exhausted than invigorated, it may be time to introduce some new strategies to help keep busy days from feeling overwhelming. Proper exercise, balanced nutrition and quality rest can make it easier to adapt when life demands you give a little bit more. Everyone’s life demands are different. Some may be looking to push through a late night workout or make it to the office for an early meeting, while others are looking to enjoy an outing to the park with their kids at the end of the day. These tips will help fuel, inspire and accomplish whatever your personal “one more” is. Begin with a bang. With a busy day ahead, it can be tempting to rush out the door and skip breakfast. However, countless studies have shown this first meal of the day is extremely important. Skipping out on a balanced breakfast can drag you down all day, both mentally and physically. Being hungry later in the day may also make you more likely to overeat or nibble on high-calorie snacks. For those mornings when you’re crunched for time, grab a protein-rich ready-todrink shake or sandwich with egg, cheese and lean meat to give yourself
sustained energy for the rest of the day. Work in a workout. In addition to helping ward off disease and manage your weight, regular exercise helps lift your mood by stimulating feel-good chemicals in the brain and boosts energy by helping your body work more efficiently. A combination of aerobic or cardio activity (walking, jogging or running) and musclestrengthening activity (lifting weights, resistance training or yoga) is the winning formula, according to the most recent Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. After your workout, refuel with a rich and creamy Premier Protein Shake, available in Chocolate, Vanilla and Strawberries and Cream, with 30 grams of protein, only 160 calories and just 1 gram of sugar. Power with protein. Your body gets energy from three main sources: carbohydrates, fat and protein. Protein plays a major role in repairing damaged cells, tissues and muscle. Good sources of protein include meat, fish, eggs, dairy, nuts and vegetables, but the best sources deliver lots of protein without a lot of fat, carbs and sugar. A protein-based snack is a good way to recharge during the
day. Premier Protein 30-gram bars and Fiber Bars are smart, easy and gluten-free options that are available in an array of flavors to provide sustained energy with fiber, calcium and protein to help curb hunger. Keep up on sleep. Quality sleep – and an adequate amount of it – is critical to your overall wellbeing. While you’re sleeping, your body is hard at work healing and repairing from the day, as well as regulating your hormonal balance and protecting
your immune system. At the same time, your brain is also recharging to help your mental function, including learning aptitude, problem solving and emotional health. Most adults need an average of 7-9 hours of sleep for optimal performance. Visit premierprotein.com to learn how you can get the sustained energy to help you accomplish “one more” thing each day. Simple Solutions to Combat Winter Skin Sensitivity
(Family Features) The winter season is here, and it’s important to get in the habit of taking care of your skin. Cold weather brings low humidity levels and dry air, which can suck the moisture from your skin, and without proper care, skin can become dry, cracked and irritated, causing discomfort. This winter, focus on a regimen that helps protect and hydrate skin so you can spend time enjoying the benefits of winter like family game night, snow days and snuggling by the fire. Prepare your family for cold weather with these simple tips that can be easily incorporated into your family’s daily routine, keeping skin feeling soft and healthy all winter long. Hydrate Inside and Out. Staying hydrated during the hot, summer months is a given, but it is also important to remember that cold winter air can leave your skin parched. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, Page 16
sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Switch to a Mild Laundry Detergent. Many common detergents can be abrasive to sensitive skin, especially when it is more vulnerable to irritation during the harsh winter months. Wash bed linens, towels and clothes with a mild detergent like all Free Clear year-round, especially during the winter months. As the No. 1 recommended detergent brand by dermatologists, allergists and pediatricians for sensitive skin, all Free Clear includes no dyes, fragrances or irritating residues. Using the power of stainlifters to fight tough stains, it is also safe for the whole family to use, keeping laundry clean while being gentle on skin. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Products that contain toxins, allergens and irritants should be avoided during months when skin is most sensitive. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t
The Coto de Caza News
contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and
protect your skin from the cold, dry air. For those with sensitive skin, avoid synthetic fabrics and itchy materials like wool, and wash clothes with a dermatologist-recommended detergent like all Free Clear. By implementing these best practices for skin sensitivity, you can minimize redness, dryness and discomfort to help skin stay healthy and glowing throughout the winter season. 2300 attend Vanguard University’s Christmas Fantasia Concert Series This holiday season, Vanguard University’s award-winning Music Department celebrated the 21st anniversary of its Christmas Fantasia concert at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on December 1 and at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa on December 5. Over 2,300 community members gathered at and the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall to witness the Vanguard University Orchestra perform their annual Christmas Fantasia concert to ring in the holidays. Vanguard University’s nationally recognized Concert Choir and Orchestra, University Women’s chorus, Jazz Ensemble, Guitar Quartet, Barbershop and Beauty-shop Quartets and the Vanguard Singers and Band set the stage for their annual Christmas Fantasia performance. The annual concerts, presented by Farmers and Merchants Bank, showcased nearly 200 talented students from Vanguard University’s music programs in an awe-inspiring production of holiday classics. In addition to Christmas music, the event presented the prestigious Ralph Carmichael Scholarship Award to two students from the department of music. The award, given each year, is named in honor of the legendary Vanguard alum, and composer and arranger for Nat King Cole. Rachel Chapman, a senior at Vanguard, was recognized with the presentation of the Ralph Carmichael Scholarship Award for her outstanding academic performance. Chapman is a General Music major with an emphasis in Applied Voice in Vanguard’s music department and will be obtaining her degree in Spring 2018. “It’s such an honor to know that the department I have loved being a part of and have had such great experiences with for the past four years has noticed me and appreciates me this much,” said Chapman. “I could not have asked for a better college experience, and I feel so blessed and grateful for the people at Vanguard who helped me grow in both my musicianship and my faith.” Aaron Leppke was also presented with the Ralph Carmichael Scholarship Award for his dedication and perseverance within the music program. Leppke, a junior at Vanguard, is a Vocal Performance major and Voice lead and Secondary Cello performer for the Vanguard University music department ensembles LIFEsong and Concert Choir. “For over 20 years, our students have had the opportunity to share Christmas traditions, both old and new,” said Dr. James Melton, Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Vanguard University. “I am honored to have been a part of this tradition for so many years, which would not be possible year after year without the local community support that we receive from businesses and concertgoers.” Proceeds from the Christmas Fantasia concert support scholarships and other educational resources through the Vanguard University Fund. Vanguard University (VU) is a regionally ranked, private, Christian university of liberal arts and professional studies. Located ten minutes from Newport Beach and an hour from Los Angeles, Vanguard equips students for a Spirit-empowered life of Christ-centered leadership and service. Vanguard is committed to academic excellence, boasting small class sizes that are designed to cultivate lasting professor-mentor relationships that enhance the learning process. The 2016 U.S. News & World Report ranked Vanguard #13 in the Regional Colleges (West) category, #10 for Best Colleges for Veterans, and #19 for economic diversity. The Princeton Review ranked Vanguard a 2016 “Best in the West” regional college. Accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission, Vanguard offers more than 30 degrees and certificates through its undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies programs. 3 Tips for Cooking Up a Healthy New Year
After a holiday season filled with indulgent food and limited time for exercise, there’s no time like the New Year to adopt some new, healthy habits. These additional tips can help you get a healthy start to the New Year: Change up your routine. Start by making a few lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthier diet or increasing your exercise regimen. Maybe you’d like to shed a few pounds or tone up before the weather gets warmer. Changing up your eating (and drinking) habits can be the first step on the path to success. Start at the tap. Make sure your healthy eating habits include cooking with the best-tasting water possible. You may be surprised to know that the water coming from your faucet may contain unwanted contaminants such as lead and mercury. That means you could be washing your fruits and vegetables or making soups and smoothies with water that contains impurities. Contrary to what some people may think, boiling water does not completely remove certain contaminants like lead from water. “Drinking water daily is an important component to staying healthy, as water keeps you hydrated, aids in digestion and transports
vitamins and other nutrients. I prefer drinking filtered water to make sure I avoid potentially unwanted contaminants,” said Keri Glassman, a registered dietitian, nutritionist and PUR spokesperson. “I recommend installing a faucet filtration system that won’t break the bank, such as the PUR Advanced Faucet Filtration System, for a superior, on-demand solution for clean, healthy and greattasting water right from the tap.” Visit PUR.com to learn more about superior faucet filtration systems and how to get cleaner, better-tasting water. Create healthy, hearty recipes. There are plenty of delicious and nutritious recipes that can help fuel your body all year long. For example, this hearty soup is full of tasty, powerful ingredients like protein-rich chicken sausage; nutrient-dense kale and butternut squash, which are excellent sources of fiber; plus vitamins and minerals. Garlic, onions and cloves add a kick of antioxidants and flavor. White Bean Soup with Spicy Chorizo Recipe courtesy of Keri Glassman Cook time: 30 minutes Servings: 1 4 cups kale, chopped
1 medium butternut squash, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1 can (14 ounces) cannellini beans, drained 2 cups PUR filtered water, plus additional for rinsing 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 links precooked chicken sausage, diced 3 1/2 cups low-sodium chicken broth salt, to taste freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Rinse kale, squash and cannellini beans in filtered water. Set aside. In pot over medium heat, heat oil. Add onion and garlic, stirring frequently until softened, about 5 minutes. Add sausage and saute 2 minutes, or until warmed through and slightly browned. Add squash, kale, broth and 2 cups filtered water. Cook, partially covered, 15-20 minutes, or until squash is softened. Reduce heat to low. Add beans and gently simmer uncovered 3 minutes. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste, before serving.
Good health at any age: What women should watch out for Being healthy is a common goal for many people, but good health does not have a finite endpoint; it’s an ongoing process that unfolds over a lifetime. For women, aging can bring on surprising health changes as they move through the decades of their life. From good nutrition and proper exercise to bone health and vaginal wellness, knowing the changes aging may cause can empower women to better care for themselves and prepare. “From puberty to pregnancy to menopause, a woman’s body can go through a plethora of changes in her lifetime,” says Dr. Alyssa Dweck, an OB/GYN, author and expert on women’s health. “Once adulthood hits, the next few decades bring about expected, and some not-so-expected, physical, mental and emotional changes. Those changes mean how we care for our bodies will change, too.” While each woman’s aging experience will be as unique as she is, Dr. Dweck points to some
common health changes women may encounter during several decades of their lives: 20s With puberty completely over, women can begin to identify what is and isn’t normal for their bodies. While diet and exercise are important at any age, during their 20s women begin to understand what is required in order to maintain a healthy weight. Menstrual health may fluctuate during this decade of life and many women will focus on both contraception and feminine hygiene, Dweck says. “Women ages 21 and older should get a pap smear at least every three years,” she adds. During this age range, infections are not unusual. In fact, three out of four women will experience a yeast infection in their lifetime. Diets high in sugar and/or alcohol can increase the risk, as well as other factors like staying in a damp bathing suit or tight clothing for extended periods and menstrual cycle fluctuations. For those experiencing an infection for the first time, it’s best to visit the gynecologist to confirm the diagnosis. 30s During their 30s, women often start to focus on family planning and pregnancy, among other things. The hormonal changes that occur with pregnancy and/or use of birth control can cause shifts in pH balance, which can lead to infections. Being familiar with yeast infection symptoms
from past experience allows women to find quick and easy solutions, like the over-the-counter treatment of MONISTAT(R) in the feminine hygiene aisle of local drugstores. It relieves symptoms four times faster and works on more of the most common strains of yeast than the leading prescription. Nutrition continues to be important during this decade, whether women choose to begin families or not, as bone loss generally commences in the fourth decade and metabolism slows. Women should adjust their diets and exercise to ensure their caloric intake meets their needs, including maintaining their intake of calcium and eating nutritious, low-fat foods. 40s Perimenopause can cause significant health changes for women in their 40s, including a decrease in estrogen levels. Something many may find surprising is that at this age, women are at their sexual prime. However, intimate areas become thinner and less elastic in a woman’s 40s, which may cause varying degrees of discomfort. 50s Most women will experience menopause during their 50s, and while this new stage can cause pH changes, having no more menstruation or erratic cycles can be very freeing. With diminished estrogen, drying can occur in private
areas, for which moisturizers and lubricants can be useful. Women should avoid feminine products that are not both dermatologist and gynecologist tested as they can cause yeast infections, Dweck cautions. At this age, it is more important than ever to maintain a regular exercise routine, including cardio, strength training and flexibility training. 60s and beyond By this age, most women know their bodies intimately and can quickly tell when something isn’t right. Common health issues that can occur with age include diabetes, arthritis, cancer and heart disease, many of which also cause irregularities in feminine health. Women should remain active and continue to eat healthily as metabolism slows and bone health decays. Brain health is also important. Along with regular exercise and intellectual stimulation, social interaction with family and friends can help prevent cognitive decline. “Women will typically know what’s normal for them. There isn’t one normal - just normal for you,” Dweck says. “Women should never be afraid to familiarize themselves with their bodies and ask their doctors questions. Be inquisitive and don’t consider any topic taboo. Good health is a multifaceted process, and gynecological health is an important part of a woman’s overall well-being.” - (BPT)

Travel tips to help introverts enjoy every journey If you’re an introvert, traveling can be a challenge. Being introverted can increase the anxiety you feel when engaging in already-stressful business travel, and undermine your enjoyment of a leisure trip. Being forced to sit next to and even socialize with numerous other people, many of them strangers, can be torture for introverts. “Introverts aren’t necessarily loners or even shy,” says Jim Menge, president of Rovia, an award-winning travel services provider. “They’re just more bothered by travel hassles like crowds, intense together time, and interacting with strangers. It’s important for introverted travelers and their traveling companions to plan an itinerary that will make the trip as stress-free and enjoyable as possible for everyone.” Reserved, not shy About 50 percent of the population are introverts, according to Psychology Today. And while stereotypes may portray introverts as shy, socially phobic loners, that’s not at all who they are. “Introverts are drained by social encounters and energized by solitary, often creative pursuits,” the online journal explains. “Many introverts socialize easily; they just strongly prefer not to.” Your introversion may make you think a group travel experience would never be for you; you’ll stick to taking trips with your core family members and friends. Yet with the
right itinerary, introverted travelers can find the perfect balance of alonetime and group activities, whether they’re traveling for business or pleasure. Travel tips Menge offers these tips for introverted travelers and the traveling companions who love them: * Talk about your plans with your travel companions, especially if you’ll be touring with extroverts. It’s important everyone discusses what they can do to make the trip as enjoyable as possible for everyone. * Consider how comfortable you are with stretching your limits. “Each person is unique and has their own level of comfort with pushing themselves to try new experiences,” Menge says. “Think about what you’re comfortable with.” For example, learning and using a few foreign phrases, or talking with one person outside the tour group can be a low-stress triumph. * Many introverts are energized by creative and meaningful pursuits. If that describes you, voluntourism may be a great group travel option. Voluntourism is vacation travel with a volunteering component, and it allows you to have meaningful interaction with both locals and fellow travelers that goes beyond the small talk you may dread. Voluntour itineraries like those offered by WorldVentures balance work and relaxation, and volunteer projects
can last from a single day to several weeks. One day of your trip, you may work with others to build a school, and the next day have free time to explore the sights and sounds of the destination. * Allow yourself adequate free time to get away from the group by yourself (if safe to do so) or with a handful of close loved ones. That away time will allow you to recharge so you’re more relaxed when you rejoin the larger group. * Look for accommodations that won’t force you into social situations. For example, a B&B, where dining is communal, might be an uncomfortable environment for an introverted traveler, while a larger hotel may allow for more anonymity and independence. * Choose activities that allow you to enjoy “me-time,” even if you’re with others. For example, a hike on
a scenic and moderate to strenuous trail will allow for more quiet time - even in a larger group. Everyone will be concentrating on walking carefully and breathing, rather than on socializing. * Use technology to give yourself alone time when you can’t physically get away from others. Wearing headphones or using an e-reader can silently alert your travel companions that you need some time to yourself. “You’re not being rude, you’re just doing what you need to do to recharge,” Menge says. “It’s perfectly OK to do what you need to do in order to maximize your enjoyment of your trip.” You can learn more about voluntourism and group travel opportunities that will please both introverts and extroverts at www. dreamtrips.com. - (BPT)
3 surprising home elements you can automate
Just a decade or two ago, home automation was still something of a novelty. Some homeowners might have had programmable thermostats in their homes, but many probably hadn’t thought of automating things like window coverings. Moreover, they likely viewed any home automation they did have as a convenience. Today, home automation is becoming an essential efficiency-enhancing element in many homes. Right now, just fewer than 6 percent of American households have automated homes, but within four years that percentage is expected to triple to nearly 19 percent, according to data compiled by Statista.com. What’s driving more people to automate their homes? A report by icontrol networks found security, cost savings and ecofriendly energy efficiency are what people find most exciting about home automation. Heating and cooling, lighting and security systems are among the most common elements automated in homes, but they’re far from the only ones that can save you money and make your home more efficient. Here are three surprising things you can automate in your home to further improve efficiency, boost energy savings and lower energy costs: Page 24
Window coverings Shades, drapes, blinds, and awnings can all help control the amount of heat and light that enter your home. Selecting window coverings to block out light and heat in summer, and admit light in winter, can help your home’s heating and cooling systems work more efficiently. However, the effectiveness of window coverings hinges on opening and closing them at the right time - something you may forget to do, or not be home to do. Automating and powering window coverings can help automatically maximize their effectiveness. Depending on the climate where you live, automating window coverings could yield energy savings of 1120 percent, according to a study commissioned by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). Somfy’s motorized solutions easily integrate with any home automation system, regardless of brand or technology, and offer many options for controlling window coverings. Select from a wide variety of handheld remotes, sensors, wall switches, and the myLink app that allows you to control your motorized window coverings from mobile devices. Door locks If you’ve ever been locked out of
The Coto de Caza News
your house or had a guest arrive at your home when you were out, you probably wished there was some way to unlock your front door without a key - and from miles away. Smart locks allow you to do both those things and more. You can replace or supplement an existing lock by installing a smart lock, and you won’t need a professional locksmith to do it. If you can install a regular lock and operate a smartphone, you have the expertise you need to add and use a smart lock. In addition to allowing you to lock and unlock your door without a key, smart locks also allow you to operate the lock remotely from an app on your phone. You can also receive alerts when the door has been unlocked - a great way to track the comings and goings of latchkey kids. Many allow you to generate a single-use digital key that you can email to guests or service providers who may need to enter your home when you’re not there. Smart locks can also be paired with most popular home automation systems. Smart appliances Many appliance makers are offering smart, connected appliances with the big draw being their “wow factor.” However, some of the
features of these appliances do hold the potential to improve a home’s efficiency and energy savings. For example, a refrigerator that tracks groceries and lets you know when you’re about to run out of an important item could help you better plan your shopping trips. Fewer car trips conserves gas and reduces greenhouse emissions. Cooking is another area where automation can relieve some of the energy waste caused by human error. Smart ovens and cooktops can sense when to turn themselves off in case you forget to do it - reducing energy waste and fire risks. More homeowners are discovering the convenience, security and efficiency advantages of home automation. Technology is helping make American homes more livable and enjoyable. -(BPT)

FAMILY FEATURES
I
n many American households, once-unfamiliar sustainability practices have become commonplace. Current data from the Environmental Protection Agency shows a national recycling rate of about 34 percent, more than double the 16 percent rate in 1990. Even so, more than 167 million tons of waste still ends up in landfills each year. Food waste is a major contributor to landfill excess, representing about 35 million tons annually. However, because food is such an integral aspect of daily life, it’s also an area where small changes can add up to a big impacts. These eco-friendly tips can make it easier to move toward more sustainable consumption:
Plan a weekly menu.
If you typically take a casual approach to grocery shopping, you’re likely purchasing ingredients for a single meal that could be repurposed two or three times over. This is especially true with produce; unused portions are left to spoil and ultimately end up in the trash. Instead, determine what meals require ingredients to prepare and create a shopping list that maximizes the use of each item. For example, if you’re planning on burgers one night, consider tacos the next evening to use up any leftover lettuce and tomato.
Give leftovers a makeover.
If you can’t easily repurpose ingredients or you’re left with a hodgepodge of items, consider making a dish that really shines with an eclectic mix of ingredients. Casseroles, stir-fry and even smoothies are great ways to use up a selection of random ingredients.
Shop smart.
Buying in bulk may seem like a smart money-saving strategy, but if the food goes bad before you’re able to use it, you’re actually wasting both food and money. Also take time to peruse your pantry before heading out to the store; it’s easy to buy duplicates when you’re not sure what you have on hand.
Cut back plastics and packaging.
Rely on cloth or canvas totes for your shopping, and when you must use plastic, look for ways to reuse the bags. In a similar vein, avoid purchasing products with excess packaging, which is often produced using unsustainable methods and only adds to the landfill problem.
Fill the freezer.
Many perishable food items, such as meat and produce, can be prepped and frozen, ensuring they don’t go bad and saving you cooking time throughout the week. Clear, reusable storage bags or containers make it easy to find what you need and a date marked on a small piece of masking tape will help you use the oldest items first.
Compost unused food items.
The EPA estimates that as much as 96 percent of food waste that could be composted ends up in landfills instead. Rather than tossing foods that go bad, create your own compost pile and put that waste to work as a natural fertilizer for your plants and flowers. Composted fertilizer is a nutrient-rich way to protect your landscape while reducing landfill waste. It’s been said that the kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s also a place where you can easily incorporate responsible, earth-friendly practices that can help nourish the planet for generations to come. Free-range hens on a happy egg co. farm, photo courtesy of the happy egg co.
3 SIMPLE RULES FOR HEALTHY, HAPPY EGGS When you head to the grocery store for organic eggs, you assume a certain level of quality in how your eggs were produced. While there are standards and requirements that companies follow in labeling their eggs, the standards lack regulation and don’t truly reflect whether or not hens are treated humanely. The USDA’s latest proposed outdoor space requirements would give hens a mere 2 square feet of space in order to carry the USDA organic label. To put things into perspective, the average cubicle size in the U.S. is 75 square feet. The proposed requirements are the human equivalent of running laps in an elevator, essentially. While an improved organic standard would be a step in the right direction, it makes no headway in terms of alleviating consumer confusion over carton labeling. Rather than providing animal welfare-conscious consumers with the confidence that they are purchasing humanely produced eggs, it proposes living conditions for hens that are neither humane nor safe. Consumers should be able to trust the packaging, labels and imagery that they find on their carton of eggs, but oftentimes these labels say little to nothing about the way the hens were treated.
To reinforce the integrity of the organic seal, hens should be given far more space than what has been outlined by the USDA. In order for hens to live happier, healthier lives, the happy egg co., the first U.S. free-range egg brand to be certified by the American Humane Association, abides by three simple rules: 1. Give Them Space: The happy egg co. provides 21.8 square feet of space per hen, which is equivalent to roughly 20 shoe boxes high, long and wide – plenty of space for them to stretch their wings, dust bathe, forage and roam freely. 2. Give Them Enrichment: Providing hens with “henrichment” structures, including play kits and perches, encourages them to spend most of their day outside. This enrichment is meant to stimulate their natural instincts, which can only be exhibited outside of a cage or barn. 3. Keep Consumers Safe: The FDA requires that egg producers test for salmonella once in a hen’s lifespan, but testing for salmonella every 15 weeks helps ensure that only the highest quality eggs enter the food chain. For more information about hen welfare and making humane purchasing decisions at the grocery store, visit thehappyeggco.com.

Creative ways to take your raised bed and planter gardening to new heights Generations of space-challenged gardeners have relied on raised beds and planting boxes to grow a harvest of vegetables, fruits and herbs - even in the tightest spaces. Vertical gardening gave us a whole new way to garden in tight spots, by encouraging plants to grow up, rather than spread out. Now, by marrying the two techniques, you can create a visually stunning, artistic display of gardening prowess that will keep your table full of fresh produce throughout the summer. Building the foundation A well-built, durable planting foundation, such as a raised bed or planting box made from Western Red Cedar, is an essential starting point. Decide where yours will go and start building. You can find free project plans online to help you build the frame for a raised bed or a planting box. Whatever style of planter you build, it’s important to choose a quality construction material. Western Red Cedar is often the choice of savvy gardeners because it’s naturally rot resistant as well as durable and easy to work with. It needs no chemical finishes or paints to preserve or beautify it, and is harvested from sustainably managed forests. Learn more and find free project plans at Realcedar.com. Simple steps onward and upward With a good foundation in place, it’s time to consider all the ways you can turn your raised bed or planter into a vertical masterpiece. Adding a simple trellis to your raised bed or planting box is an easy way to maximize your
growing space. For example, you can plant shrubtype plants like peppers in a row in the front portion of the planter, then add a trellis in the back portion and encourage vining veggies like beans, peas and cucumbers to grow up the structure. For larger raised beds, you can build a vineyard style pergola above the bed. A sturdy pergola made from Western Red Cedar can support a variety of substantial plants such as squash, but you don’t have to be limited to fruits and veggies that grow on vines. Affix small boxes or even burlap bags to allow for greater variety in your vertical garden. Loftier ambitions Is your raised bed nestled against a wall? Or perhaps your planting box perches on one side of your backyard deck. You can add a free-standing wall by building a cedar frame and stretching hex wire across the frame. Vines will readily climb the wire, but you can also attach terra cotta pots to the wire to hold herbs, small vegetables and even flowers. In a variation on the trellis concept, you can build a framework with multiple rows of narrow cedar troughs above your raised bed or planting box; the troughs make a great growing spot for herbs. You can also create a stepped planter by building a series of boxes in graduated sizes and then stacking them atop each other widest to narrowest. Or, for a more modern look, build a contemporary ladder-style vertical garden with box-shaped removable planters.
Veteran gardeners who are also seasoned doit-yourselfers can go all out by building a pergola. Western Red Cedar pergolas can go anywhere, take up far less ground space than a traditional garden and are wonderful vertical gardening pieces. Just plant your favorite vining fruit or vegetable at the base of each post and train the vines upward as they grow. One out of every three American households gardens - 36 million households - according to the National Gardening Association. With 9 million households in urban area participating in gardening, it’s a great time to explore creative ways to bring vertical gardening and raised beds or planter boxes together. - (BPT)
Creating confidence: 8 steps to feeling more self-assured
Virtually everyone struggles with a lack of self-confidence at some point in their lives and it’s perfectly normal to feel unsure of yourself in certain situations. However, if you find a lack of confidence is holding you back from fully enjoying your personal life, or achieving your professional goals, it may be time to take action. “There are actually steps you can take to rebuild your confidence, even when you’re struggling to feel self-assured,” says Susie Moore, a motivational speaker, best-selling author and life coach. “Confidence is a real-life super power that affects every aspect of your life, from your relationships to your career and social life, but it’s also more attainable than you think.” Moore shares tips on how you can be your most confident self and live a fulfilled, unconditional life: * Tap the power of words and positive thinking by starting every day with an uplifting mantra. Positive self-talk such as “I am loveable. I am worthy. I am enough” can help boost confidence levels. Make a conscious decision to be more kind and gentle with yourself every day. * Practice a strong pose and smile to help enhance your sense
of confidence. Confidence is all about attitude. Making these small physical changes can immediately impact how self-assured you feel in any situation. * Make self-care non-negotiable. Take time to listen to your body and give it what it needs to help you feel confident. For example, millions of men and women experience bladder leakage, but products like Depend FIT-FLEX Underwear, which are designed to move with your body while offering trusted protection, can help you think less about leaks. That’s energy you can devote to better things, like reconnecting with the people and parts of your life you’ve been missing. * Keep your mind and body active. Being busy leaves you little time to overthink, so fill your life with activities you enjoy. Yoga, visiting friends, reading, cooking, going for walks or even organizing your closet all count! * Speak with intention. The way you talk impacts your mood, your confidence and how other people perceive you. When you use verbiage like “I’ll try” or “I don’t think I can,” you’re really allowing yourself permission to feel unconfident.
Instead, build confidence and commitment with statements like “I will” and “I know I can.” * Don’t overcomplicate things or allow yourself to be distracted by unimportant things. Focus on your daily objectives and long-term goals by cultivating a clear and positive vision of how you want your life to be. * Listen to, but don’t heed negative opinions of others. Your positive attitude and vision are more important than anyone else’s negative thoughts. * Be sure to reserve time and energy for your own priorities. Busy
lives mean we can get bogged down with commitments to others, and while those things are important, it’s vital to take care of yourself and your own priorities first. Build your schedule around the time you need for your own goals and let everything else fit in around that. “Confidence is an almost-magical quality that can help you lead your best, most fulfilled life and - more importantly - it’s in your grasp!” Moore says. Check out how Depend FIT-FLEX Underwear is helping real people feel confident and request a sample at www.Depend.com. - (BPT)
