D C G C U N C R Announces Plans for 2018 Course Changes and Membership Plans

With over 300 excited members attending in December, Dove Canyon celebrated its’ clubhouse remodel with a Grand Re-Opening Party. The majestic 52,000 square foot clubhouse is a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired building, featuring spectacular views of the course and surrounding hillsides- not unlike the grand hotels of our national parks. The entire facility received a complete makeover with new flooring, wall treatments, and furniture. One of the key surprises awaiting the membership was the construction of a wine cellar, reminiscent of an Italian villa. The cellar, seating up to 20 people, will feature an exclusive dining venue complete with custom wine tasting and food pairings. The clubhouse has an additional 7 separate meeting and banquet rooms that can accommodate up to 350 people.

N R V Dove Canyon has been awarded the title as “Couples Top Choice” for the past 4 consecutive years with national magazine Wedding Wire. The upstairs grand room can hold up to 300 guests and provides equally breathtaking views of the course. Add Family Fun to Chores

When school is in session and just getting out the door is an accomplishment, having go-to routines can help make ordinary activities more exciting for the entire family. However, if you encounter resistance to everyday household tasks, you may just need a simple revamp to make activities more entertaining and engaging. Refresh your family routines with these ideas designed to create more willing participants: Trash duty No one likes taking out the trash,

but with a nudge, even little helpers can find fun in this mundane chore. Ask for help sorting materials in the recycle bin for an educational chance to throw things without getting into trouble. Or try timing how long it takes to gather trash from the bedrooms or bathrooms, and set a goal to break that record next week. Personal care Getting kids to brush not once but twice a day can be an onerous endeavor, but making the activity silly may be just the answer. The “Silly Brushing Song” is a fun, interactive

Learn more at tomsofmaine.com. Yard work Tools made for pint-sized helpers can make all the difference in getting junior gardeners on board. So can setting small, attainable goals so they can celebrate a sense of accomplishment. Try designating a flower bed to get rid of leaves or a section of the yard that needs sticks removed. Be sure to demonstrate proper techniques and give frequent

praise for a job well done. Clean-up time It’s no secret that kids can destroy a room in minutes, especially when it’s a room filled with their favorite toys. When it comes to cleaning up, all that mess can be overwhelming. Look for ways to make the chore more manageable, such as picking up all the cars and trucks first then the building blocks next, for example. Sing songs while you work to help make the time go faster. Pet care For many households, pets are not only beloved members of the family, they’re living, breathing lessons in responsibility. Once the novelty of a new animal wears off, however, so can the excitement of feeding and walking. A simple sticker chart can be a hands-on and effective way to remind kids that this is a chore that needs to be completed every single day. Plus, pet care can be a fun way to introduce children to the importance of responsibilities and becoming a “big kid.” For added fun, make your own stickers using funny photos of your family pets. Navigating the Cooking Oil Aisle – Fast Facts Corn may be the top crop in Iowa, but many consumers are not aware of corn oil’s heart-healthy benefits1 and its versatility in the kitchen. When cooking for your family, selecting the best ingredients for a heart-healthy meal can be challenging and there is one ingredient that is often the core of any recipe: cooking oil. However, navigating the cooking oil aisle can be confusing, so this guide breaks down everything the home chef needs to know about cooking with oil. Heart-Health Focused Maintaining healthy cholesterol levels is important to your heart health, and when it comes to impact on cholesterol, not all cooking oils are created equal. Next time you find yourself reaching for extra virgin olive oil at the grocery store, consider swapping it out for corn oil, which a study shows can help lower cholesterol two times more than extra virgin olive oil2. Corn oil also has nearly five times the amount of polyunsaturated fats compared to olive oil3 and these heart-healthy polyunsaturated fats help reduce cholesterol levels in your blood4. Making a conscious effort to use ingredients like Mazola® Corn Oil is a smart, heart-healthy choice for your family. A Gut Decision When it comes to lowering your cholesterol and staying heart healthy, go with your gut. Corn oil contains cholesterol-blocking plant sterols – plant-based micronutrients that help block the absorption of cholesterol in your gut and work to prevent bad

cholesterol (LDL) from entering the blood stream5. Corn oil contains nearly four times more cholesterolblocking plant sterols than olive oil, three times as many as vegetable oil and nearly 1.5x more than canola oil6. Sourcing the Best Ingredients Today, more and more families are paying close attention to where their food comes from and prefer locally sourced ingredients. Opting for local food can give you more confidence in the ingredients you use in your family’s meals. Mazola® Corn Oil is produced from corn in the Midwest, including corn grown in Iowa. A lot of olive oil is imported from the Mediterranean region, while most canola oil comes from our friendly neighbors up north in Canada. But, did you know that you can get hearthealthy corn oil that’s grown and made right here in the US? Multipurpose Functionality Whether you fancy yourself a top-notch baker, grill master or just

starting out, each ingredient selected plays an important role in obtaining the meal’s desired taste. Extra virgin olive oil has a strong flavor that can change the taste of the foods you cook. Corn oil is an all-purpose cooking oil with a neutral taste that lets the true flavors of your dish come through, making it the perfect ingredient for heart-healthy dishes like pan-fried salmon or in a salad dressing over a bed of spinach. Corn oil can also handle the heat in the kitchen because of its high smoke point (450°F), making it a great, allpurpose cooking oil for everything from grilling and sauteing to stir frying and baking. This is key for crafting quality meals at home because once a smoke point is exceeded, the food flavor and nutritional value are negatively affected. N e w Ra n c h o Sa n t a Ma r g a r i t a Ma y o r Michael Vaughn Outlines His Plans for 2018

New Mayor of Rancho Santa Margarita, Michael Vaughn Less than a month after his election as Mayor of Rancho Santa Margarita, Michael Vaughn sat down with the Coto de Caza News to discuss his plan for the City and how new businesses will be impacted by rising costs, new regulations, and increasing developments in the City of Rancho Santa Margarita. Rancho’s new Mayor is experienced in the ways of Municipal politics and procedures. He comes to the job with a hefty resume of previous experience as a Rancho Santa Margarita. Planning Commissioner and a veteran campaigner who won election to Rancho Santa Margarita’s City Council, Although the new mayor is himself a prominent local attorney, his demeanor is more affable and charismatic than many politicians. He remembers the names of residents he met years ago. He immerses himself in a wide variety of local projects. His fondness and participation with the 5th Marine Battalion led to the City’s adoption of the regiment as a source of civic pride. Mayor Michael Vaughn has a long history of vigorous support for businesses in the city of Rancho Santa Margarita. A strong supporter of the completion of the 241 Toll Road, Vaughn says. “We are heavily invested in mobility and transportation for seniors, and access of our roads for the business

community.” While mayor Vaughn effusively embraces the local civic organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce and the virtues of his contemporaries on the Rancho City Council, his honor does not shrink from addressing community problems. Indeed, he is both quick to recognize the problems and ready to offer a variety of solutions. SURPRISES AT CHIQUITA RIDGE For the past several years before mayor Vaughn assumed command of Rancho Santa Margarita’s top executive office, the City had been buzzing with enthusiasm over the prospect of several grandiose development possibilities at the City’s windfall acquisition of the undeveloped acreage known as Chiquita Ridge. Located just across from Tijeras Creek Country Club, various scenarios envisioned a glorified sports park where teenagers and young adults would frolic in the fresh air surrounded by dignified commercial developments which would complement the sports park and whose taxable revenues would both fund the sports motif and augment the burgeoning budget of the City of Rancho Santa Margarita. Other optimistic scenarios offered high value residential development suggesting that the taxes from that development would benefit the

Rancho Mayor Michael Vaughn with Former Mayors Bradley McGirr, and Jerry Holloway city. Prior to groundbreaking, the City cautiously commissioned a couple of studies to validate both residential development and the sport park concept as to desirability and financial sustainability. The studies found that both residential development and sports park concepts lacked the financial vitality to make them worthwhile and that there was not enough future demand for a sports park on its own to justify the investment. While there exists interest in both a hospital and a hotel for that area, the mayor says a hotel is the more likely of the two to deserve further study. SURGING SHERIFF STIPEND “Some of my top priorities are for the strength of the business community,” says the mayor. “It’s important for residents to know that they can depend on the city to provide essential services like police, fire protection, street lighting of our roads and neighborhoods.” At the same time the mayor acknowledges the challenges of trying to control the continuing rising costs of the Orange County Sheriff’s contract to provide policing services for the City of Rancho Santa Margarita. MAYOR MINIMIZES MARIJUANA MONEY Even as California has legalized marijuana, and many municipalities have recognized the millions of tax

dollars that cities can collect by licensing dispensaries and retail sales locations, mayor Vaughn says he has “no plans” to incorporate that lucrative revenue stream into the tax base of the City of Rancho Santa Margarita. Has the city even done a study or survey to see how much potential revenue the city might be missing? “No. The city of Rancho Santa needs to support itself wisely to secure its’ tax base, but the city. is not currently doing any kind of study to use marijuana revenue to balance the city budget.” NO BUSINESS LICENSE TAX While many neighboring cities, notably the City of Anaheim collect hundreds of thousands of dollars each year from local businesses, for whatever reason, the city of Rancho Santa Margarita has always been judiciously protective of its reputation as a “business friendly” municipality, even to the extent that the city imposes no business license fees whatsoever upon those who do business within the city. Although this practice seems to have no effect on whether or not a business will succeed or fail, it is warmly embraced by local businesses who are always both surprised and delighted that it continues. Apparently, it has some element of attracting new businesses. Mayor Vaughn says that he plans to continue the practice under his administration.

Sa n t a Ma r g a r i t a C a t h o l i c H i g h Sc h o o l B o y s ’ Va r s i t y Lac r o s s e 2 0 1 8 P r e v i e w Photos by: Dennis Walsh Santa Margarita Eagles’ Head Coach Adam Guy is entering his 5th season as the Boys’ Varsity Head Coach and has the 2-Time Defending Trinity League Champions primed for another deep run into the CIF Southern Section Playoffs. The Santa Margarita Eagles last defeat in league play was 2015 and Coach Guy is looking to defend their title with Orange County’s best offensive team led by Senior All-American Quentin Buchman (Notre Dame University) who is closing in on 300 career points. Buchman, one of the nation’s most highly sought-after recruits and the reigning Trinity League MVP will be supported by an unprecedented cast of offensive weapons. The Santa Margarita Eagles’ Midfielders are the best ever at Santa Margarita and may be the Southern Section’s top threats with Senior Midfielder and Academic AllAmerican Michael Walsh (1st Team All-League/3rd Team All-County) and Senior Nicholas Parrino (2nd Team All- League/Honorable Mention All-County) combining for 62 goals and 40 assists last year returning with both looking to continue their playing days at University of Texas, TCU, SDSU or SMU in 2019. Walsh and Parrino came on strong last year while leading the Eagle’s to a school best record of 15 wins & 5 losses (6-0 in Trinity League Play). Buchman, Walsh and Parrino without question form the County’s best talent at midfield and will be dominating again this spring. At Attack, Sophomore Sensation Tyler Wrightson returns after contributing 23 goals and 11 assists and may be Orange County’s best kept secret. This kid can rip it and

has the speed and stick skills to become a top-notch college player. If that wasn’t enough, Junior Attack and 3-year letterman Jack Allendar also returns with his 21 goals and 11 assists giving Guy five scorning threats from all over the field. Watch out for junior Ryan You to be a difference maker this season as well. Ryan has the ability to play multiple positions on the field and his energy level can be contagious. Defensively, Guy has a solid group of young defenders led by returning starter and Junior Ryan Sigal who played outstanding defense last year and from multiple reports, had an incredible off-season dominating play in summer and fall tournaments last year. Sigal will be joined by converted LSM Matt Ury (1st Team All-League/2nd Team All-County) and possibly Freshman Kai Solomon who has received rave reviews by the staff and fans this past off-season. Senior Matt Ury will be continuing his lacrosse career at D1 Bellarmine University in Kentucky. Coach Guy will also have the benefits of returning senior Robert Colley at SSDM who has been a pillar in the middle of the field on defense the past two seasons. Junior Goalie Ryan Olsker will defend between the pipes and has showed great promise with limited playing time last year. The Santa Margarita Eagles’ look to kick off their season is just a few weeks with their first round of practices. Look for Coach Guys’ team to be ranked near the top of the Orange County boy’s lacrosse rankings this preseason. ELKS HONOR MEM B ERS F OR YE A RS O F SERVI C E

Five year members present to receive service pins By: Andy Costello Mission Viejo / Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge No. 2444 conducted their annual tribute to members for years of service at a recent meeting. This year’s event, which was well attended by Elks members and guests, recognized years of tenure from one (1) to fifty-five (55). Exalted Ruler (“ER”) Mike Long presided over the meeting. Lodge Secretary Laura Lumley acted as master of ceremonies and awarded 162 service pins. Secretary Lumley said of the event, “Pins are awarded for five-year increments of service. We affectionately call it ‘Old Timers Night’ and it is always a fun filled get-together for the recipients and attendees. There is always lots of storytelling from the older members about the early history of our Lodge.” Over 138 members were awarded five through thirty-year pins. In the most seniors presentations, a 35-year service pin went to Past Exalted Ruler Tom Schreck, and Don Sweetland received a forty-year pin. Celebrating 55 years of membership and present to receive recognition and 55-year pins were Karl Beierschmitt and Don Lundholm. ER Long said of the event, “Our Lodge prides itself on

the increasing numbers of younger men and women who are becoming members. We love to see those young families here enjoying themselves at a Friday night dinner as they are certainly the future of the Elks.” Long added, “Nevertheless, I think it is great when we honor our old timers. They are the people who built and made our Lodge and the Elks the charity organization it is today.” The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks also reached a historic milestone in February as it is celebrating its 150 Anniversary. Twenty year members Vicki Myers-McCann, Past Exalted Ruler Gloria Plans are in the final stages for a R. LeCouvre, Tommy Dobsch, Andy Dumont, and Past Exalted Ruler gala 150th birthday party which Charlie Hart will take place at the Elks National Convention in San Antonio Texas this coming July. The Mission Viejo / Saddleback Elks Lodge No. 2444, celebrating forty-eight (48) years of service to the Saddleback Valley communities, is one of ten lodges in the Orange Coast District of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) whose headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois. The BPOE is a charitable organization with a proud 150 year history of giving, “Elks Care, Elks Share.”

K i d W o r k s F o u n d at i o n Raises More Than $768,000 Photos by Ann Chatillon The 2017 KidWorks’ Foundation for Success (FFS) Luncheon was held at the Doubletree Hotel, Santa Ana, and set a record by raising more than $768,000 to help fund afterschool education and leadership development programs conducted by the nonprofit headquartered in central Santa Ana. This is the largest sum raised since the inception of the luncheon in 2007 and represents the majority of the after-school program budget funding academic enrichment, tutoring, leadership development, and college readiness programs at the expanded KidWorks Dan Donahue Center. Now in it’s 11th year, the event is always a looked-forward-to-event as the luncheon is emotionally charged as the positive effects of KidWorks on the challenged children served by the organization is definitely something the attendees are supporting. The prestigious 2017 Dan Donahue Leadership Award was presented to David A. Pyle, Philanthropist, Founder/Chief Executive Officer of American Career College and Shareholder of West Coast University. “This very special award recognizes Mr. Pyle’s fervent support for KidWorks’ youth and families,” said David Benavides, KidWorks’ Executive Director. “For decades, Mr. Pyle has been a leader and innovator in the private, postsecondary education community, and he is as passionate about the community as he is about supporting health care and educational programs that aid underserved children and families.” “I have been a supporter of KidWorks because these young men and woman are being developed as our future leaders and will be making a difference in our communities,” said Pyle. “Seeing firsthand the interaction of the kids, family members, staff and volunteers as they grow is inspiring and something I am proud to be a part of.” Centerpieces on each of the tables were Uncle Dan stuffed bears, named after Dan Donahue, the late benefactor of KidWorks and namesake on the Dan Donahue Center The event’s keynote speaker Chad Williams, author of the bestselling book, “SEAL of God,” talked about his coming to terms with the direction of his life and his subsequent journey through the grueling Naval Ops training. He was one of only 13 to make it to graduation day and has served his country on multiple deployments to defend freedom. Also recognized at the event was Alfredo Padilla, one of KidWorks many amazing student success stories. He is a recent California State University, Northridge graduate, where he earned his degree in kinesiology. Since its inception in 2007, KidWorks’ annual Foundation for Success event has raised nearly $5.8 million to fund programs at the KidWorks Dan Donahue Center. The Orange County Business Journal has consistently named the KidWorks’ Foundation for Success event in the “Top Five Charity Luncheons in Orange County.” Since 1993, KidWorks has helped at-risk children, youth and families in Santa Ana, California thrive in body, mind and spirit. As a 501(C)(3) nonprofit, KidWorks offers educational support, leadership and character-building programs, and health and fitness activities that begin with preschoolers and follow youth into their college years. KidWorks’ main building, the Dan Donahue Center, serves the highest number of children and offers a state-licensed preschool. In total, KidWorks operates four centers that have become safe havens in gang-heavy, highcrime and overcrowded residential areas in central Santa Ana. KidWorks serves 1,000 children, youth and parents weekly and reaches over 4,000 community members annually. To learn more about KidWorks please visit www.kidworksoc.org.

Simple Ways to Manage Pain Sooner is better when it comes to managing nagging aches and pains that can hamper your healthy lifestyle. In fact, the coming winter months are when pain pops up the most for people of all ages, according to celebrity trainer Ramona Braganza. Keys to keeping active and painfree are getting ahead of pain and preventing it from becoming a larger problem that is harder to handle. To help reduce and prevent pain, Omron has partnered with Braganza to provide five easy tips to keep you doing the things you love while helping minimize pain and keeping that spring in your step this winter: Sit Tall: If you have a desk job, proper posture can help to reduce back pain as you age. Sit with your back straight with your shoulders back; distribute your body weight evenly on both hips, bend your knees at right angles and keep your feet flat on the floor. Be Flexible: Whether it’s weekly yoga, or standing up and stretching between long periods of sitting, flexibility can help you stay fit and strong. One simple stretch: stand with your feet shoulder width apart, place hands on your lower back with finger tips pointing down, slowly lean back

as far as comfortable while looking up at the ceiling, then return to start. Repeat five times. Eat Smart: Reduce the risk of inflammation by incorporating antiinflammatory foods such as tomatoes, olive oil, nuts, fatty fish, fruits and vegetables into your diet as much as possible. Master the Basics: Shoveling, pushing furniture and even gardening can be hard on your muscles, so it’s important to keep them strong in order to prevent pain. For safe and proper training techniques, visit ramonabraganza.com. Power Up to Reduce Pain: A proven therapy often used by physical therapists that you can get without a prescription is TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), which offers a practical solution to your everyday pain management needs because it’s portable and can help lessen the need for pain medication. Omron offers one of the most powerful TENS units on the market and it is 100 percent drug free. For more ways to keep those aches and pains at bay, especially as the temperature drops, visit omronhealthcare.com.

Make Protein at Breakfast This Year’s Resolution

Tired of the same New Year’s resolution? The popular yet undefined goal to make healthy choices often fails after a few weeks as we get tired of pursuing such a lofty goal. This year, get specific with your goal and commit to making the most of each day by increasing your protein intake at breakfast. Americans tend to eat most of their protein in the evening, but back-loading protein at dinner can affect how your body uses it. That’s why experts recommend spacing out your protein intake throughout the day to make the most of the important nutrition it provides. In fact, many nutrition experts now recommend getting 25-30 grams of protein at each meal for the best daily nutrition, yet Americans only get about 13 grams of protein at breakfast, on average.

Pairing a glass of milk (or chocolate milk) and its high-quality protein with your eggs or favorite overnight oats combination is an easy, delicious way to help get the 25-30 grams of protein recommended before noon. Plus, you’ll feel fuller longer so you can focus on the things you want to accomplish. For more information on how you can fill up your cup with milk to get closer to your morning protein goal, visit MilkLife.com. Savory Oatmeal with Soft-Cooked Egg and Bacon Servings: 1 Protein: 32 grams 1 cup lowfat milk 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats, uncooked 1 pinch sea salt 1 teaspoon cooking oil (or 1/2-second spray) 1 large egg 1 tablespoon cheddar cheese, shredded 1 slice cooked bacon, coarsely chopped 2 teaspoons green onion, sliced

Do It Yourself Car Care Everyone Can Do

While taking your car to an auto service professional is a great way to ensure its performance, the Car Care Council reminds vehicle owners there are few simple vehicle checks that they can easily learn and do themselves to save a little money and help keep their vehicles running efficiently all summer long. With basic knowledge of common maintenance practices and a little time, motorists can inspect the following components in their own driveway: Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer fluid and antifreeze/coolant. Check the hoses and belts as they can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system.

Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and inspect and replace worn wiper blades. Keep the reservoir filled with windshield washer fluid. To keep the cooling system working effectively, the coolant and distilled water mixture for a vehicle’s radiator should be 50:50. Never open a hot radiator cap when checking the coolant level in the reservoir. As a rule of thumb, the coolant should be changed annually on most vehicles. Check the gas cap to ensure it is not damaged, loose or missing to prevent gas from spilling or evaporating. Don’t neglect the exterior. When washing the outside, make sure to include the tires and wheels and the underside and fenders to eliminate any road salt or grime. The body of the vehicle should be washed using a product sold specifically for cars. Wax your vehicle every six months. To learn more about how to care for your vehicle, and for a free copy of the popular Car Care Guide, visit www.carcare.org.

Add years to your pet’s life with these tips By Jodi Ziskin Few things in life are as special as the unconditional love and loyalty a pet provides. With 78.2 million owned dogs and 86.4 million owned cats in the United States, according to The Humane Society, it’s obvious Americans enjoy having pets. What might not be so apparent is how best to care for them. When it comes to making sure your pet stays healthy and lives as long as possible, what steps can you take? Tips for adding years to your pet’s life include: 1. Investigate pet food While many pet parents feed their cats and dogs the same thing day after day, they may not realize it’s a habit that can lead to nutritional deficiencies and food intolerances. Try a holistic approach to a pet’s diet. That simply means using real, whole food, not by-products, rendered ingredients, artificial colors, artificial flavors or preservatives. Homemade (cooked or raw) is optimal. If a pet guardian is not interested in preparing homemade food, the next best thing is frozen raw food. All the pet parent has to do is defrost portions in the refrigerator overnight. Freeze-dried or dehydrated raw food is another good option. Finally, there are a handful of canned foods that are very high quality. Page 24

I suggest to always reading the label when selecting food. The first ingredient should be a high-quality meat, like de-boned white chicken. If the first ingredients are different types of grains and starches, then that food should be avoided. 2. Consider supplements Many people take multivitamins and other supplements to better their health, and this practice can benefit pets too. There are many factors that contribute to a pet’s lifespan. Some are out of our control, like genetic, congenital and environmental factors. However, providing a species-appropriate diet, including supplements like omega-3s, contributes to overall wellness, helping pets thrive. Supplementing a pet’s diet with omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) has many health benefits, including healthy skin and coat, reduced inflammation that causes itching and hot spots, joint health with less inflammation, strong immune system and a healthier digestive tract. Using fish oils specially made for pets is highly recommended. 3. Prioritize play and rest Exercise is paramount to the physical health of cats and dogs. After all, a body in motion stays in motion. The simple act of walking a

The Coto de Caza News

dog (or cat) helps to lubricate joints, preserves flexibility, maintains muscle mass (which protects joints), and keeps blood circulating through the joints and muscles. Make time every day to play with your pets. Cats need only five to 10 minutes once or twice a day for interactive play. On days when you simply do not have a minute to spare, hide some cat toys around the house. Some high, some low. Your kitty will get extra exercise by finding and playing with their ‘prey. Walking a dog once or twice a day is good for both you and your pet. If you cannot devote the time, please look into hiring a dog walker. Since it is detrimental to a dog’s health to have him hold urine all day long,

having a dog walker come midday is optimal. Remember, resting periods are just as important as physical activity. Spending quiet time with our pets is so important for their overall wellbeing. The simple act of petting a dog reduces their stress and helps them feel secure. The same is true for cats, however, most cats do not liked to be stroked for a long period of time. In addition to these tips, I advise pet owners of young and middleaged pets to see their vet annually. Older pets should see the vet at least twice a year. This helps ensure you and your furry family members have many happy, healthy years to look forward to.

Room-by-Room Renovations, Small changes that add up to a big impact If your favorite room is outdated and dingy, a renovation may be all you need to make the old feel new and to fall in love with your home all over again. Upgrading your home can be a big job, and unless it’s part of a premove-in plan, few homeowners find it practical (or even possible, from a budget standpoint) to execute a large-scale project. However, tackling the updates one room at a time and focusing on small changes that bring big returns can put those overdue enhancements well within reach. Kitchen It’s the heart of the home, and it’s where many homeowners sink big money to make upgrades. Kitchen renovations don’t have to require a second mortgage though. Re-facing rather than replacing cabinetry can bring about a whole new look for a whole lot less money. This is a good option when the existing cabinets are still in good working condition and you’re just looking for an aesthetic change. Other smallscale options include swapping out the countertop and sink, changing the lighting fixtures and updating tired floors with contemporary wood or tile. Bathroom When plumbing is involved, project costs can skyrocket, but there are some relatively simple ways you can give your bathroom a facelift on a modest budget. For starters, swap out all the fixtures from lighting to faucets. A new vanity is another instant upgrade, whether you opt for an updated version of the original or select a whole new style for a completely fresh look. Also consider upgrades that can increase natural light and fresh air without compromising privacy, such as the addition of skylights to your ceiling, or “fifth wall,” which can completely change the lighting dynamic of the room. In addition to balanced, natural light, skylights like those from Velux can open to help refresh your space and keep it odorand moisture-free. For extra style and light control, consider complementing the room’s decor with skylights featuring colored blinds, which are available in more than 100 colors and styles, and also offer remote control operation for convenience in raising and lowering the blinds and opening skylights to let in fresh air. Learn more about making the fifth wall part of your renovation plan at whyskylights.com. Living Room A common space where the family gathers is likely to sustain the greatest wear and tear, and because you spend so much time there, it’s also a room where you’re likely to find a list of things that irk you. Creating a new color scheme is a simple fix that transforms the space, but changing the palette of the walls is just the

beginning. Also consider taking your redesign to the ceiling with vibrant colors, creative wallpapers or even exposed beams. Round out the room by swapping out lamp shades, adding vibrant throw pillows, replacing old curtains or blinds, or tying the color scheme together with a new area rug. Bedroom In your private sanctuary, all the typical options for updates apply for sure. However, this is a space where the furnishings can be an especially impactful way to influence the ambiance, especially if a construction project in the room where you sleep is impractical. Changing out the style of the bed frame and complementary pieces creates a whole new vibe for the room. Then bring in a new collection of textiles for the bedding and drapery to help round out the pseudo-renovation. Laundry Room If you’re looking for modest ways to update your home, be sure to consider spaces like the laundry room. Although you likely use this space less frequently than common spaces like the living room or kitchen, plenty of essential activity happens in the laundry area. Practical features like added storage space, cheerful color on the walls and easy-to-clean flooring can all make this room’s tedious tasks more enjoyable. Which Skylight is Right? Skylights can serve multiple functions, both aesthetic and practical. Understanding the different types of skylights can help you choose the right fit for your home. Fresh Air Solar-powered skylights rely on the sun’s energy to open and bring both air and natural light into your home. Some models, such as those offered by Velux, feature a rain sensor that automatically closes the skylight at the first sign of precipitation. They’re also easy to operate with a touchscreen remote control. Electric skylights are wired into your home electrical system and open and close via a radio frequency, touch-screen remote control. Manual skylights open with a hand lever; a control rod is generally available for out-of-reach installations. Fixed An economical choice for visually expanding areas such as hallways, stairwells and other closed-in, dark spaces, these static skylights are intended to fill a room with natural light. Energy Performance Adding a solar blind to a skylight results in more savings via potential tax credits as well as reduced energy usage. The blind functions to block heat penetration when closed, but during cooler weather it can stay open to allow warm, sunny rays to supplement the home’s climate control system. The Coto de Caza News

Adopt Cost-Cutting Shopping Habits in the New Year The start of the New Year is often a time for resolutions and improvements to your daily lifestyle. While many people vow to lose weight or take a big trip, others might focus on trying to save money in the year to come. There are some easy ways to start saving now and develop smart shopping habits for the remainder of 2018. Plan Weekly/Monthly Meals Instead of impulsively buying produce and other perishable items while grocery shopping, try to make a plan for all your meals that week or month. By only buying what you need, you can save money at the grocery store and limit the opportunity for food to go to waste. Private Brands Another simple way to save money this year is to make the switch to private or store brands. Many items can be purchased at a fraction of the name brand price, and there is often little or no difference in product quality. For instance, Dollar General offers many private brand items at affordable prices with a satisfaction

guarantee, which can help you to cut back on expenses without sacrificing quality. Digital Coupons You can score truly great deals by clipping coupons, but doing so can be a time consuming process.

New digital alternatives can make the process less painstaking. One example is Dollar General’s digital coupon program, which lets users create a profile where they can pin the coupons most relevant to them. You can have instant savings on your

cell phone or computer for items you use the most, without ever touching a newspaper or pair of scissors. This new year, resolve to make a few small changes to your shopping habits that can create big savings in the long run!

Resolve to Learn More about Wine in 2018 Have you always wanted to learn about wine? In 2018, consider expanding your knowledge of wine as a great New Year’s resolution. Christopher Silva, CEO of St. Francis Winery in Sonoma, CA, offers the following tips for wine newbies and enthusiasts alike to get started on getting to know wine better in 2018: • Join a club. A wine club, either through specifically one winery or company that features an international selection, is a great way to have a variety of hand-picked, quality wines delivered to your doorstep. Whether you decide to stick with one varietal or try many, a wine club can cater to your wishes or help you expand your horizons wisely. • Take notes. Sipping on some vino? Record your impressions of the flavors in a “wine diary.” Remember to clear your palate first with something neutral, such as crackers. You’ll know whether to revisit the wine in the future, as well as learn to become more mindful of what you’re drinking. • Seek variety. For a broad overview of wine, it’s important to become familiar with the major varietals, which for white wines include Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and for red wines, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfadel. Here are three new wines to try this year: Versatile as an aperitif or with a variety of seafood and light meats, St. Francis Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc 2013 is a refreshing vintage wine with a clean, crisp structure and aromas of citrus, kiwi and mango with a touch of lime. Next up, St. Francis Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon has a rich, complex flavor and body. Page 28

The wine’s firm structure, generous tannins and depth of color complement classic aromas and flavors of black currant, cassis, dusty cocoa and tobacco. This wine is an excellent companion to aged blue cheese, braised or grilled beef and roast pork with fruit. Looking for an American classic? Try Zinfandel and St. Francis Sonoma County Old Vines Zinfandel, which is made from dry farmed old vines to ensure concentrated flavor. Aromas of boysenberry, clove and cinnamon are followed by

The Coto de Caza News

flavors of mixed berries, red licorice, tobacco leaf and mulling spices. Pair with barbecued ribs and pasta Bolognese. • Travel. Go right to the source and consider planning a trip to wine country. Many vineyards host tours, have tasting rooms and offer education programs. A winery is also a great place to find top notch wine pairings. By resolving to explore the world of wine, you can make everything from casual weeknight meals to festive parties, more delicious in 2018.

FAMILY FEATURES

t has been said that distance makes the heart grow fonder. When the demands of life make it tough to get away, you can actually find your escape closer to home – right in your home, even – by carving out a corner to create a retreat just for you. A room dedicated to you and all of your hobbies or personal interests can serve as a welcome escape from the real world if only for a little while. These tips make it simple to get started planning your big escape with ideas centered on some of the most common specialty rooms, as well as a solution for fitting the ideas into a smaller home. Create a space for crafts. If you find your frazzled senses defraying with a little threading therapy, look to create a space that celebrates this pastime. With the rise in popularity of websites such as Pinterest, which feature a plethora of DIY ideas, you’ll have ample opportunity to distract your mind and busy your hands. A room designed to let you explore your crafty side can help prevent the kitchen or dining room table from becoming a creative center or wrapping station around the holidays, and allows those areas to remain dedicated to family, food and friendship. It doesn’t have to be just for crafts, though. It can also be a place to settle down with a good book and just relax. Keep your space clutter-free and ready to enjoy with a craft room such as those designed by Wellborn Cabinet, Inc., which can feature spacious storage and expansive countertops, providing ample space to create projects that help decorate both the interior and exterior of the home, or simply to unwind and relieve stress. Don’t dismiss cars, bars and sports. If a room free of frou-frou decor where you can just unwind is more your ticket, a man cave may be just the answer. Man caves come in all shapes and sizes, from rowdy dens for sports fanatics to workshops decked out with the tools of your trade. Even if decorating isn’t your thing, look for ways to make the place your own, whether you display trophies from your hunting excursions or decor emblazoned with the logos of your favorite sports teams. This is the room that allows you to relish in the hobbies you enjoy most. If there isn’t a spare room or basement available, the garage can serve as a good alternative. With specific spots for tools and lawn care products – or even that car or motorcycle collection – the garage can meet the same needs as a more traditional man cave. When two rooms become one. Whether space limitations prohibit separate quarters, or you simply prefer to share your hobby time with a partner, you can create a specialty room that accommodates both your interests with a little creativity and planning. Working as a team, you can find the right accessories and storage to design a getaway for two. For example, a creative room from Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. offers more than 600 door styles, wood types and combinations. The result is a chance to combine two rooms, such as the man cave and craft room, for a sanctuary you can build and enjoy together. Find more inspiration for personal spaces and tools to maximize your space and storage at wellborn.com.

Accessorize Your Personal Space

If creating a space all your own feels like a daunting project, these clever tips from the experts at Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. will help get you closer to a room you can get ready to enjoy: n Charging Solutions: Install a charging station in a drawer for phones or other handheld devices. Power and docking stations can easily hide devices and ports yet keep them readily accessible. n Accessory Racks and Holders: Hooks for tools or coats keep them off of other furniture, including countertops where they can pile up and detract from your workspace. Cubby inserts and baskets help keep your things organized on shelves. n Sliding Shelves: Sliding shelves, drawers and baskets let you organize tools or crafting accessories while providing easy access to the items you’ve tucked away.

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (800) 280-2832 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.AUCTION.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 059006-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
