Local Dermatologist Noted for Innovative Skin Care Methods and Ou t standi n g C o s m et i c a nd S u rg i ca l Pr oce du r e s Well- known skin care specialist Dr. Daniel Di Cesare, of Orange Coast Dermatology who has local offices in both Rancho Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo is widely regarded by his peers and patients for providing cutting edge technology in the treatment for advanced skin care. “I was especially impressed with Dr. Di Cesare’s excellent staff when I visited his office”, said one recent patient. “I was made to feel welcome and all of his staff were all knowledgeable and familiar with my file and showed extraordinary care for my comfort. They explained all the details of my procedure and showed me several options for treatment. This was a refreshing change from my previous dermatologist who seemed to lack interest in my personal well-being.” Visiting at the Rancho Santa Margarita office, the newspaper interviewed staff member Beth Belkofer. A Registered Nurse with 25 years of experience in surgical dermatology and skin care treatments. She said” at Orange Coast Dermatology, we practice the kind of personal cosmetic and surgical care that provides comfort and confidence in the treatment of every patient. Many people come to the doctor’s office with some sense of worry or apprehension. By taking some extra time to discuss the available procedures in detail, we find that patients are relieved and delighted to be informed and reassured. We treat every patient comprehensively from head to toe and each person’s treatment is individually customized to their specific needs and preferences.” Another staff member at Orange Coast Dermatology is Ann Floeringer, who told the newspaper “As an Aesthetician with forty years

of experience I’m delighted to be working with Dr. Di Cesare. His methods are right at the top of cutting edge technology,” she said. “While some of our patients have serious skin issues such as pre-cancerous skin blemishes, many other patients have other skin issues such as cosmetic concerns of wrinkles, moles and discolorations which require the attention of experts to make their lives easier and revitalize their appearance. Orange Coast Dermatology is quite possibly the best medical practice in all of South Orange County, trained and equipped to provide this kind of care,” she continued; “we’re skilled in offering procedures today that other professionals in the area are only just now learning about, such as Bodyfirming and Skin Tightening, using methods like radiofrequency combined with microneedling, and aquafacials to exhilarate and enhance the face and body with maximum results.” The newspaper spoke with Dr. Di Cesare, who said: “My goal is to have satisfied patients. This can best be accomplished by offering the very latest treatments that exceed the patient’s expectations. At Orange Coast Dermatology, we are continuing to learn new techniques and to share those new methods with our staff by continuous training and having experienced staff members available to assist in these procedures. Perhaps because I come from a family of missionaries, and I like to call it my mission to provide excellence in every aspect of a patient’s treatment serving this community in a friendly and compassionate manner.” Dr. Di Cesare continued;’ At Orange Coast Dermatology we are launching a pilot program

5 surprising benefits of U.S. farm-raised seafood You’re shopping for tonight’s dinner and decide fish sounds delicious. You visit the seafood section of your local market and are suddenly overwhelmed with choices. Salmon, tilapia, clams or shrimp? Imported or U.S. farm raised? It can feel like there are endless options when shopping at the grocery store. Knowing what’s best for you and your family is difficult enough, yet alone weighing environmental concerns and other impacts of food choices. When selecting seafood, there are various things to consider before deciding what to put in your cart. For many people, U.S. farm-raised options are their seafood of choice for a variety of reasons. Low-calorie protein U.S. farm-raised fish and shellfish are an amazingly nutrient dense food and are excellent sources of high quality, easily digestible protein. What’s more, they are packed with important vitamins and minerals including essential B-complex, A and D vitamins as well as selenium, iron and zinc. An average serving has less than 200 calories. Some of the leaner varieties like tilapia, clams, oysters, mussels and shrimp have less than 100 calories. Heart health Coronary heart disease continues to be the No. 1 cause of death in the United States. According to most health experts, eating fish and seafood just twice a week can reduce the risk of heart disease while providing a host of other benefits. U.S. farm-raised seafood is low in cholesterol and high in omega-3 fatty acids that play a major role in

maintaining coronary heart health, as well as the health of the brain. Safer regulations If you want to help ensure that the seafood you consume is safe to eat, opt for products that have been farm-raised in the United States. Look for country of origin and method of production labels in your supermarket. The U.S. has strict regulations that help ensure you and your family are eating the highest quality, safest seafood. For example, in the U.S. it is illegal to use antibiotics and hormones to promote growth. Plus, you are supporting family farms that generate jobs for Americans. Sustainable More than 90 percent of the seafood consumed in the United States is imported, according to the National Marine Fisheries Service. Those imports can often come from countries that do not have strict environmental

and product safety standards. In the United States, fish and shellfish are farmed using methods that do not harm the environment while helping to meet the growing demand for seafood by supplementing wild harvests. Pregnancy superfood There is a growing body of evidence that children whose mothers regularly consumed seafood during pregnancy had better motor skills and brain function after birth. The USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015-2020 recommend that pregnant women and breast-feeding mothers consume at least 8 ounces of seafood each week. Good choices include fish like salmon, trout, channel catfish, hybrid striped bass and tilapia. Want to learn more? M r . a nd M r s. B e a ll G o to Wa s h i n gto n Prominent Rancho Santa Margarita Residents Attend the Inauguration The elegant gold-engraved invitation to the Presidential Inaugural did not arrive by chance. Both Tony and Jennifer Beall were delegates to the Republican National Convention. Jennifer Beall, who works for California State Assemblyman Bill Brough was chair of Orange County Trump election committee, and former Rancho Santa Margarita Mayor Tony Beall was the speaker who introduced Donald Trump at the Republication Rally in Costa Mesa last summer. The Bealls quickly packed their bags and invited their son Andrew to join them on their trip to Washington, D.C. Tony said “I would describe it as the exclamation point after many, many months of hard work. It was thrilling, and a moment that I will always treasure. What we got today was Donald Trump, the same man that gave his very first speech announcing he was going to run for president. What was so refreshing about nowPresident Trump from the beginning is that he is authentic, unscripted, and unabashedly proud of America and the American people. It wasn’t simply a partisan speech. It was a speech of big principles that Americans can get behind. He wasn’t elected President by just Republicans, he was elected president by the American people.” If Rancho Santa Margarita residents would have had time to hold an election on the best choice of people to send to the Presidential Inaugural, they could not have chosen a more popular couple to represent the city. Donald John Trump was sworn in Friday as the 45th president of the United States, after which he delivered an ambitious speech promising to throw out entrenched Washington elites, end “American carnage” in cities and restore jobs lost to shuttered factories. “Today, we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another, or from one party to another, but we are transferring power from Washington, D.C., and giving it back to you, the people,” Trump said. In his speech, Trump seemed

Page 8

to promise not just the obvious transition from Obama’s Democratic administration to full Republican control of Washington but to a new style of politics, in which Trump will seek to be a new kind of independent power center. Trump, 70, was administered the oath by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., using two Bibles — one from President Lincoln’s inauguration, and another that Trump’s mother gave him in 1955. His wife Melania Trump stood at his side. With now former president Obama and three previous presidents watching from behind him, Trump seemed to condemn them as unfaithful to the popular will, saying that his inauguration signaled that “the people” would rule the country again. Trump’s speech clocked in at less than 17 minutes, making it unusually short among recent inaugural addresses. It concluded with the signature promise of his stunningly successful presidential campaign, to “make America great again.” After the speech, new White House counselor Stephen K. Bannon said in an interview that Trump’s speech had echoes of another long-ago American populist. “It was an unvarnished declaration of the basic principles of his populist and kind of nationalist movement. It was given, I think, in a very powerful way. I don’t think we’ve had a speech like that since Andrew Jackson came to the White House,” Bannon said. “But you could see it was very Jacksonian. It’s got a deep, deep root of patriotism there.” Trump’s swearing-in now gives Republicans control of both the White House and Congress for the first time since 2006. The new president has promised to undo some of the most significant pieces of Obama’s legacy including his signature health-care law. “The world must know that we do not go abroad in search of enemies, that we are always happy when old enemies become friends, and when old friends become allies,” the White House website said.

PACIFIC SYMPHONY POPS CELEBRATES VALENTINE’S DAY WEEKEND WITH THE INCOMPARABLE MICHAEL BOLTON Get ready for a wonderfully romantic and memorable evening when Pacific Symphony Pops welcomes the iconic, multi-Grammy-Award winning singer/ songwriter—Michael Bolton—for a special Valentine’s Day weekend celebration! Known for his signature raspy voice and poignant lyrics, Bolton makes his debut performance with the Symphony, featuring a night of blockbuster hits, soulful classics and favorite pop songs, including “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You,” “When a Man Loves a Woman,” “How Can We Be Lovers,” “That’s What Love is All About,” “Time, Love and Tenderness,” “Stand By Me” and many more! Bolton, who has always balanced a love for writing new songs with a passion for covering the classics, has sold more than 53 million albums and singles worldwide. Led by the dynamic guest conductor Stuart Chafetz, this Pops concert takes place the weekend before Valentine’s Day, Friday-Saturday, Feb. 10-11, at 8 p.m., in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Tickets are $45-$177 ($205 Box Circle). For more information or to purchase tickets call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org. In 2014, The Reviews Hub in London wrote: “With Grammy Awards coming out of his ears, nine numberone hits and over 53 million records sold—Michael Bolton, a little over 60, has no difficulty in getting the women and yes, quite a lot of men, screaming and shouting as he takes to the stage to perform in this tour... This concert was an extremely exciting, exhilarating and heart-warming evening—one cannot recommend it enough. It has many excellent moments that help you to forget the outside world for a few short hours.” Bolton, who has enjoyed a view from the top of music entertainment for several decades, has been recognized for his many artistic achievements with two Grammys for Best Pop Male Vocal Performance (nominated four times), six American Music Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As a songwriter, he has earned over 24 BMI and ASCAP Awards, including Songwriter of the Year, nine MillionAir awards and the Hitmakers Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame. On his breakthrough album “The Hunger,” Bolton authored the number-one hit single “That’s What Love is All About” and sang his charttopping version of Otis Redding’s “Sittin’ On the Dock of the Bay.” That album was certified double Platinum with four million copies shipping worldwide. The accomplishments just continued. To date, Bolton has eight studio albums ranked in the top 10, with nine number-one charttopping singles. But his biggest success came with the album “Soul Provider,” which sold more than 12.5 million copies and showcased several

Michael Bolton

chart-toppers including the numberone hit single, “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You,” which earned him his first Grammy. This album also includes the hit singles “When I’m Back on My Feet Again,” “How Can We Be Lovers,” “Soul Provider” and the Grammy-nominated “Georgia on My Mind.” “I never dared to dream of a life as big as mine has become,” says Bolton. “I’ve made many mistakes and done things—and not done things—I’m truly sorry for; but I have also experienced countless, cherished moments of joy, love and laughter, and I have no regrets for putting my heart and soul into a career of music, one of the greatest gifts we all can share.” Soon after “Soul Provider,” Bolton released the number-one album “Time, Love and Tenderness,” which sold over 16 million copies, and features his Grammy Award-winning performance of the number-one blockbuster, “When a Man Loves a Woman.” This album also produced the hit singles: “Love Is a Wonderful Thing” and “Missing You Now,” as well as “Steel Bars,” co-written with Bob Dylan. He followed this with a collection of classics on the album “Timeless,” delivering the hit singles “To Love Some Somebody” and “Reach Out I’ll Be There.” The

album sold over seven million copies worldwide. His next album, “The One Thing,” included “Said I Loved You… But I Lied,” which spent 12 weeks at number one on the AC charts and earned him another Grammy nomination. Today, Bolton continues to tour the world while writing, recording and taping for a wide array of projects spanning music, film, television and theater. He also remains committed to humanitarian causes, especially through Michael Bolton Charities, as well as other social and political organizations. His timeless style, charm and good looks have also earned him a spot in several People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man” issues, including 2012’s “Sexiest Man Alive.” He became a viral sensation after being featured in The Lonely Island’s popular “Captain Jack Sparrow” video that launched on “Saturday Night Live” (performed live on the Emmys). The Emmy-nominated video racked up more than 150 million views on YouTube; it was the third most viewed video of 2011. Bolton has recorded and performed with countless musical icons. He joined Luciano Pavarotti on stage for “Vesti la giubba,” and pays homage to the Italian tenor when performing “Nessun Dorma” on tour. He has sung with Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras

and René Fleming and played guitar with BB King. He was invited to sing ”Georgia on my Mind” to Ray Charles at the International Jazz Hall of Fame Awards in 1997, and he has performed duets with both Seal and Lara Fabian for a 2011 “David Foster and Friends” PBS special. A diverse and prolific songwriter, Bolton has collaborated with some of the greatest songwriters and producers of our time: Lady Gaga, Diane Warren, Desmond Child, David Foster, Walter Afanasieff, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, John “Mutt” Lange, Dann Huff, A.R. Rahman, Phil Ramone, Ne Yo, Bob Dylan and Billy Mann, among others. He has penned songs that have been recorded and performed by over 100 artists, ranging from country legend Conway Twitty to hip hop artist Kanye West, featuring Jay Z and John Legend. Other artists include Mark Anthony, Wynonna Judd, Joe Cocker, Peabo Bryson, Kenny Rogers and Patti LaBelle. He wrote No. 1 hit singles for Laura Branigan (“How Am I Supposed to Live Without You”), KISS (“Forever”), Barbra Streisand (“We’re Not Making Love Anymore”), Cher (“I Found Someone”) and Kenny G (“By the Time this Night is Over”). And he and his songs have been featured in numerous television and film soundtracks.

Top 10 Street Style Trends From Men’s Fashion Week 2017 By Johnny Mannah Menswear Spring/Summer 2017 Fashion Week brought us a lot of inspiration from the latest designer runway collections and the streets. The street style was vibrant as ever, with the stylish civilians and visitors of London, Paris and Milan pulling out lively hues, childhoodinspired pieces and a few traditional staples. We have scouted the streets for the latest men’s fashion trends and narrowed them down to ten most beloved looks and items. 1. Bandanas Bandanas are perhaps the easiest street style trend to pull off, and they are boyishly brilliant. What makes this trend even better? All you will need is a humble bandana that could very well cost you a few dollars. An instant boost to the simplest of silhouettes, neckerchiefs are playful and can be an excellent opportunity to bring more colour to your wardrobe if you are a little hesitant to rock brighter shades. A great cherry red, cobalt blue or monochrome patterned bandana will do the trick, but ensure your knots are neat. 2. Seventies Revival Street Style from Spring/Summer 2017 Fashion Week also saw a sartorial throwback to the evocative seventies. The most appealing element from the seventies trend that emerged from street style was the rich colour palette. Try harnessing a rusty brown or rich Bordeaux as the focal point of your outfits. Loose fitting button downs in gloomy tans or amber oranges are also great.

Page 10

Some attendees also saw the shows as an opportunity to bring out their suede and velvet clothing. The key to pulling off this trend is to find pieces that pay tribute to the seventies, but also complement your features and colouring. Oh, and refrain from donning bell-bottoms. 3. Pyjama Inspired Pieces What’s not to love about a great pair of pyjamas? This trend is yawn inducing but in all the best ways. We can thank the attendees for showing us that there is a perfectly respectable way to reconcile sleepwear references with our everyday wear. Baby blue teamed with warm beige featured prominently as did striped and plaid pieces in pastel tones. Don’t think you can pull off this comfy trend? Try a loose-fitting chambray shirt in a lighter blue or a striped linen shirt for a simple incorporation of the trend. 4. White Out Head to toe white prevailed as a favoured street style trend that was certainly bold. While most gentlemen that harnessed this trend went for more elaborate oriental-inspired silhouettes, there are simpler ways to channel elements of this trend for your weekend wear. Team white jeans with a humble white t-shirt, but throw on a navy or emerald baseball cap for a more grounded look. Roll up your jeans for a relaxed adaptation of the trend. Throw on some dark sunglasses to bring a bit more dimension to the plainness of all white. 5. Childhood Memories A more playful trend that emerged

The Coto de Caza News

from the European streets during fashion week was the novel childhood references that were emblazoned on shirts, jackets and baseball caps alike. Gents saw this fashion week as an opportunity to play off youthful imagery. Astronauts, spacecrafts, zoo animals, surfboards, and the like were the fun style statements with references from our younger years. To incorporate this trend in your everyday wear, opt for boyish accessories for a simple boost to the simplest of casual pieces. Think baseball caps, over the ankle knitted socks and youthful prints. 6. Statement Bomber Jackets Attendees thought outside of the box with the colour choices of their bomber jackets at Fashion Week. Yes, black and navy bombers featured prevalently in street style, but bolder, more vivid shades also played a major role in distinguishing attendees from other guests. Lighttoned emeralds and bright pinks were unexpected and were attentiongrabbing. For gentlemen wanting to keep things conservative, opt for versatile colours, but ensure that your fit is youthful, and your accompanying pieces are streamlined. 7. The Powder Blue Shirt While some gents went for true light blues, others went for more lavender versions of powder blue button downs. Undoubtedly, there was a sea of classic silhouettes, but other powder blue shirt wearers also went for more modern adaptations. These came in the form of asymmetric shoulders, dimensional detailing and skinnier fits. For corporate wear, adapt powder blue shirts with ties in the same colour family; think navy and cobalt. Reds and burgundies are also great colour accompaniments. For casual wear, a great fitting powder blue shirt with streamline chinos is ideal. Team with loafers or white sneakers for a relaxed aesthetic.

8. Monochrome Prints On the topic of childhood memories, the monochrome prints featured on the European streets of fashion week were a little reminder to our memories of ‘101 Dalmatians’. Bold, graphic and unusual, Fashion Week attendees weren’t afraid to make daring statements in the most humble and basic of all the colour combinations. If you aren’t as brave, incorporate black and white in more traditional patterns, like bold stripes or ginghams which will read more classic yet perpetually stylish. 9. Vermillion Red Certainly one of the most attentiongrabbing colour trends, vermillion red stood out as a sartorial favourite on the streets of Fashion Week. Be careful to cherry pick which red pieces you go for; this shade of red is very bright and can read conspicuously over the top if done wrong. Vivid red t-shirts can be a nice change to our beloved white t-shirts and red sweaters are a great accompaniment to dark denim. For corporate wear, channel the trend with red socks or a preppy striped tie featuring the shade for a subtle interpretation of the trend. 10. Light Wash Denim Light blue was certainly a preferred colour of choice on the streets of Europe, with the powder blue trend sustained with the favoured denim for the Spring/Summer 2017 Fashion Week attendees. Light and bright were the denim jackets that featured heavily on the European streets. The light wash denim trend didn’t stop there, with some guests interpreting their light wash denim in edgier pieces, including light denim short sleeve mechanic coveralls and distressed jeans. The ultimate for casual wear, invest in some slightly baggy denim jackets for easy over the shoulder accompaniments to white t-shirts or striped sweaters.

TAX PLANNING STRATEGIES FOR 2016 FROM KIM COYLE CPA

Dear Client; As the end of the year approaches, it’s a good time to think of planning strategies that will help lowering your taxes for 2016. My goal is for you to leverage your tax deductions and credit to the fullest extent. I want to briefly discuss five different strategies that can be powerful tools in lowering your tax bill. And the really great part is that each of these strategies is easy to understand and implement. Here are the strategies: 1. Prepay Expenses The IRS allows cash-basis taxpayers to prepay and deduct qualifying expenses up to 12 months in advance (through December 2017) without challenge, adjustment, or change by the IRS. For a cash-basis taxpayer, qualifying expenses include lease payment on business vehicles, rent payments on offices and machinery, and business and malpractice insurance premiums. This is a great way to pump up your 2016 deductions with expenses you will eventually pay anyway. 2. Stop Billing Customers and Patients An easy strategy for reducing your taxable income for this year is to stop billing your customers until December 31, 2016. Customers, patients, and insurance companies generally don’t pay until billed. Not billing customers and patients is a time-tested tax planning strategy that business owner have used successfully for years. 3. Buy Office Equipment With Section 179, you can write off up to $500,000 of office equipment in 2016. Qualifying Section 179 purchases include new and used personal property such as equipment, computers, desks, chairs, and certain qualifying vehicles. To qualify for Section 179, you need to both buy the items and put them in business service on or before midnight December 31, 2016. 4. Use Your Credit Cards If you are a sole proprietor, the day you charge a purchase to your business or personal credit card is the day the expense is deductible, Therefore, as a proprietor, consider using your credit cards to buy office supplies and other business necessities. If you operate your business as a corporation, and if the corporation has a credit card in the corporate name, the same rule applies: the date of charge is the date of deduction for the corporation. But if you operate your business as a corporation and you are the personal owner of the credit card, the corporation must reimburse you if you want the corporation to realize the tax deduction, and that happens on the date of reimbursement. Thus, submit your expense report and have your corporation make its reimbursements to you before midnight on December 31. 5. Don’t Assume You Are Taking Too Many Deductions Make sure your record all of your rightful deductions for 2016, because if your business deductions exceed your business income, you have a tax loss for the year. After a few modifications to the loss, tax law calls this a “net operating loss,” or an NOL. The good news is that tax law allows you to carry back the NOL for two years and get instant refunds from taxes previously paid. If, after going back for two years, you still have unused losses, you can carry them forward for up to 20 years. In other words, you have a 22-year window during which you can realize the benefits of your deductions. So always document your expenses in order to get your rightful deductions. Please do not hesitate contact me if you want to discuss in greater depth any of the strategies outlined above.

Resolve to Learn More about Wine in 2017 Have you always wanted to learn about wine? In 2017, consider expanding your knowledge of wine as a great New Year’s resolution. Christopher Silva, CEO of St. Francis Winery in Sonoma, CA, offers the following tips for wine newbies and enthusiasts alike to get started on getting to know wine better in 2017: • Join a club. A wine club, either through specifically one winery or company that features an international selection, is a great way to have a variety of hand-picked, quality wines delivered to your doorstep. Whether you decide to stick with one varietal or try many, a wine club can cater to your wishes or help you expand your horizons wisely. • Take notes. Sipping on some vino? Record your impressions of the flavors in a “wine diary.” Remember to clear your palate first with something neutral, such as crackers. You’ll know whether to revisit the wine in the future, as well as learn to become more mindful of what you’re drinking. • Seek variety. For a broad overview of wine, it’s important to become familiar with the major varietals, which for white wines include Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and for red wines, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfadel. Here are three new wines to try this year: Versatile as an aperitif or with a variety of seafood and light meats, St. Francis Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc 2013 is a refreshing vintage wine with a clean, crisp structure and aromas of citrus, kiwi and mango with a touch of lime. Next up, St. Francis Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 has a rich, complex flavor and

body. The wine’s firm structure, generous tannins and depth of color complement classic aromas and flavors of black currant, cassis, dusty cocoa and tobacco. This wine is an excellent companion to aged blue cheese, braised or grilled beef and roast pork with fruit. Looking for an American classic? Try Zinfandel and St. Francis Sonoma County Old Vines Zinfandel 2012, which is made from dry farmed old vines to ensure concentrated flavor. Aromas of boysenberry, clove and cinnamon are followed

by flavors of mixed berries, red licorice, tobacco leaf and mulling spices. Pair with barbecued ribs and pasta Bolognese. • Travel. Go right to the source and consider planning a trip to wine country. Many vineyards host tours, have tasting rooms and offer education programs. A winery is also a great place to find top notch wine pairings. By resolving to explore the world of wine, you can make everything from casual weeknight meals to festive parties, more delicious in 2017. (StatePoint)

Creating confidence: 8 steps to feeling more self-assured

Virtually everyone struggles with a lack of self-confidence at some point in their lives and it’s perfectly normal to feel unsure of yourself in certain situations. However, if you find a lack of confidence is holding you back from fully enjoying your personal life, or achieving your professional goals, it may be time to take action. “There are actually steps you can take to rebuild your confidence, even when you’re struggling to feel self-assured,” says Susie Moore, a motivational speaker, best-selling author and life coach. “Confidence is a real-life super power that affects every aspect of your life, from your relationships to your career and social life, but it’s also more attainable than you think.” Moore shares tips on how you can be your most confident self and live a fulfilled, unconditional life: * Tap the power of words and positive thinking by starting every day with an uplifting mantra. Positive self-talk such as “I am loveable. I am worthy. I am enough” can help boost confidence levels. Make a conscious decision to be more kind and gentle with yourself every day. * Practice a strong pose and smile to help enhance your sense

of confidence. Confidence is all about attitude. Making these small physical changes can immediately impact how self-assured you feel in any situation. * Make self-care non-negotiable. Take time to listen to your body and give it what it needs to help you feel confident. For example, millions of men and women experience bladder leakage, but products like Depend FIT-FLEX Underwear, which are designed to move with your body while offering trusted protection, can help you think less about leaks. That’s energy you can devote to better things, like reconnecting with the people and parts of your life you’ve been missing. * Keep your mind and body active. Being busy leaves you little time to overthink, so fill your life with activities you enjoy. Yoga, visiting friends, reading, cooking, going for walks or even organizing your closet all count! * Speak with intention. The way you talk impacts your mood, your confidence and how other people perceive you. When you use verbiage like “I’ll try” or “I don’t think I can,” you’re really allowing yourself permission to feel unconfident.

Instead, build confidence and commitment with statements like “I will” and “I know I can.” * Don’t overcomplicate things or allow yourself to be distracted by unimportant things. Focus on your daily objectives and long-term goals by cultivating a clear and positive vision of how you want your life to be. * Listen to, but don’t heed negative opinions of others. Your positive attitude and vision are more important than anyone else’s negative thoughts. * Be sure to reserve time and energy for your own priorities. Busy

lives mean we can get bogged down with commitments to others, and while those things are important, it’s vital to take care of yourself and your own priorities first. Build your schedule around the time you need for your own goals and let everything else fit in around that. “Confidence is an almost-magical quality that can help you lead your best, most fulfilled life and - more importantly - it’s in your grasp!” Moore says. Check out how Depend FIT-FLEX Underwear is helping real people feel confident and request a sample at www.Depend.com. - (BPT)

Nutrient-rich ingredients, simple prep are keys to easy, healthy family meal times With summer in the rearview mirror, many Americans will now be pressed for time: Fall (when kids go back to school) and winter (dominated by the holidays) are jam-packed seasons. It may be difficult to find time for everything you need to do, including eating regular meals together as a family. Research shows that sitting down for family meals yields many benefits, from serving as a time to bond, to instilling healthy dining habits in children. Yet multiple studies also show that only about a third of families actually eat dinner together on a regular basis. Americans commonly cite busy schedules as the biggest hurdle for eating together as a family. “Regularly sitting down to dine with their parents is incredibly healthful for kids, both mentally and physically,” says registered dietitian Lyssie Lakatos. “It’s well worth the effort to ensure your family can share regular, well-balanced meals together. And you can do it! You just need some creativity, planning and powerfully nutritious ingredients.” Lakatos offers some tips to help parents honor the healthful tradition of family meal time: * Invest 15 minutes every weekend to plan the week’s dinner menus in advance. Knowing what you’ll be making ensures you won’t have the stress of coming up with ideas at the last minute when everyone is hungry; you’ll also be able to shop efficiently for ingredients you know you’ll need. Plus, kids will enjoy looking forward to the evening when you’ll serve their favorite foods. You can also make the process easy by using an online menu planner. * Simplicity is a time-saver. Dinner Page 24

might not be the best time to take risks and prepare something no one has tried before. A simple meal takes less time to prepare, and may also be more enticing to kids. Choose simple, nutritious meals that incorporate the key components of the USDA MyPlate. * Choose lean, versatile and delicious proteins - like eggs, lentils or fish - that are nutrient-rich. Eggland’s Best eggs come from hens fed an all-vegetarian diet of healthy grains, canola oil and a supplement of rice bran, alfalfa, sea kelp and vitamin E, an antioxidant. They contain three times more vitamin B12, two times more omega-3s, five times more vitamin D, 38 percent more lutein and 25 percent less saturated fat than ordinary eggs. * Get everyone involved. Family meal time is an opportunity to teach kids good nutrition, culinary skills and life lessons, all while bonding in a relaxed atmosphere. Involve children in meal preparation by assigning them age-appropriate tasks such as setting the table, pouring drinks, gathering ingredients and even cooking. * Disconnect from tech 30 minutes to an hour before the meal. Many families have a no-device policy at the dinner table, but by putting down technology in advance you free up everyone to help out. You’ll also ensure no one is late to the table because they have to send one last text - this means you too, parents! “The importance of family meals just can’t be understated,” Lakatos says. “There’s even a month in honor of the family meal - September is National Family Meal Month, sponsored by the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) Foundation. It’s a great

The Coto de Caza News

time to get back to having regular family meals together.” Here are two easy, delicious and nutritious family meal recipes that take less than 30 minutes to prepare, courtesy of Eggland’s Best: Chicken Parmesan Cupcakes All kids love cupcakes and they love cheese, so this marries the two, plus the nutrition of Eggland’s Best eggs-what could be better? Ingredients: Chicken Mixture 1 Eggland’s Best Egg (large) 1 pound ground chicken 3 tablespoons Italian-flavored bread crumbs 2 teaspoon finely chopped fresh garlic 1/2 teaspoon onion salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper Coating 1 Eggland’s Best Egg (large), lightly beaten 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup Italian-flavored bread crumbs Topping 1/2 cup marinara pasta sauce 4 (3/4-ounce) slices Land O Lakes 4 Cheese Italian Blend, cut into quarters Directions: Heat oven to 350 Fahrenheit degrees. Lightly spray eight muffin pan cups with no-stick cooking spray; set aside. Combine all chicken mixture ingredients in bowl; mix well. Shape into eight meatballs. Place flour, bread crumbs and egg into separate shallow dishes. Lightly roll each meatball in flour, then beaten egg, then bread crumbs. Pat each meatball into bottom of each prepared muffin cup, flattening

top. Bake 15 minutes. Top each meatball with 1 tablespoon marinara sauce and two quarters cheese. Bake 3-5 minutes or until internal temperature of chicken reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit and center is no longer pink. Cool 1-2 minutes in pan. Serve warm and enjoy! Pizza Frittata Ingredients: 4 Eggland’s Best eggs, large 3 large Idaho potatoes, peeled 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 sun dried tomatoes, packed in oil, thinly sliced 1/2 cup sliced black olives 2 tablespoons pesto 4 ounces turkey pepperoni 4 ounces shredded provolone cheese Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Peel potatoes and slice thin using a knife or mandolin slicer. Arrange potatoes on a 12-inch pizza pan (or in a baking dish) and drizzle with olive oil. Bake potatoes for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, whisk eggs, tomatoes, olives and pesto in a large bowl. Remove potatoes from oven and pour egg mixture over pan. Top with cheese and pepperoni and bake for an additional 15 minutes. Resolve to Adopt Cost-Cutting Shopping Habits in the New Year The start of the New Year is often a time for resolutions and improvements to your daily lifestyle. While many people vow to lose weight or take a big trip, others might focus on trying to save money in the year to come. There are some easy ways to start saving now and develop smart shopping habits for the remainder of 2016. Plan Weekly/Monthly Meals Instead of impulsively buying produce and other perishable items while grocery shopping, try to make a plan for all your meals that week or month. By only buying what you need, you can save money at the grocery store and limit the opportunity for food to go to waste. Private Brands Another simple way to save money this year is to make the switch to private or store brands. Many items can be purchased at a fraction of the name brand price, and there is often little or no difference in product quality. For instance, Dollar General offers many private brand items at affordable prices with a satisfaction

guarantee, which can help you to cut back on expenses without sacrificing quality. Digital Coupons You can score truly great deals by clipping coupons, but doing so can be a time consuming process.

New digital alternatives can make the process less painstaking. One example is Dollar General’s digital coupon program, which lets users create a profile where they can pin the coupons most relevant to them. You can have instant savings on your

cell phone or computer for items you use the most, without ever touching a newspaper or pair of scissors. This new year, resolve to make a few small changes to your shopping habits that can create big savings in the long run! (StatePoint)

Add years to your pet’s life with these tips By Jodi Ziskin Few things in life are as special as the unconditional love and loyalty a pet provides. With 78.2 million owned dogs and 86.4 million owned cats in the United States, according to The Humane Society, it’s obvious Americans enjoy having pets. What might not be so apparent is how best to care for them. When it comes to making sure your pet stays healthy and lives as long as possible, what steps can you take? Tips for adding years to your pet’s life include: 1. Investigate pet food While many pet parents feed their cats and dogs the same thing day after day, they may not realize it’s a habit that can lead to nutritional deficiencies and food intolerances. Try a holistic approach to a pet’s diet. That simply means using real, whole food, not by-products, rendered ingredients, artificial colors, artificial flavors or preservatives. Homemade (cooked or raw) is optimal. If a pet guardian is not interested in preparing homemade food, the next best thing is frozen raw food. All the pet parent has to do is defrost portions in the refrigerator overnight. Freeze-dried or dehydrated raw food is another good option. Finally, there are a handful of canned foods that are very high quality.

I suggest to always reading the label when selecting food. The first ingredient should be a high-quality meat, like de-boned white chicken. If the first ingredients are different types of grains and starches, then that food should be avoided. 2. Consider supplements Many people take multivitamins and other supplements to better their health, and this practice can benefit pets too. There are many factors that contribute to a pet’s lifespan. Some are out of our control, like genetic, congenital and environmental factors. However, providing a species-appropriate diet, including supplements like omega-3s, contributes to overall wellness, helping pets thrive. Supplementing a pet’s diet with omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) has many health benefits, including healthy skin and coat, reduced inflammation that causes itching and hot spots, joint health with less inflammation, strong immune system and a healthier digestive tract. Using fish oils specially made for pets is highly recommended. 3. Prioritize play and rest Exercise is paramount to the physical health of cats and dogs. After all, a body in motion stays in motion. The simple act of walking a

dog (or cat) helps to lubricate joints, preserves flexibility, maintains muscle mass (which protects joints), and keeps blood circulating through the joints and muscles. Make time every day to play with your pets. Cats need only five to 10 minutes once or twice a day for interactive play. On days when you simply do not have a minute to spare, hide some cat toys around the house. Some high, some low. Your kitty will get extra exercise by finding and playing with their ‘prey. Walking a dog once or twice a day is good for both you and your pet. If you cannot devote the time, please look into hiring a dog walker. Since it is detrimental to a dog’s health to have him hold urine all day long,

having a dog walker come midday is optimal. Remember, resting periods are just as important as physical activity. Spending quiet time with our pets is so important for their overall wellbeing. The simple act of petting a dog reduces their stress and helps them feel secure. The same is true for cats, however, most cats do not liked to be stroked for a long period of time. In addition to these tips, I advise pet owners of young and middleaged pets to see their vet annually. Older pets should see the vet at least twice a year. This helps ensure you and your furry family members have many happy, healthy years to look forward to.

FAMILY FEATURES

t has been said that distance makes the heart grow fonder. When the demands of life make it tough to get away, you can actually find your escape closer to home – right in your home, even – by carving out a corner to create a retreat just for you. A room dedicated to you and all of your hobbies or personal interests can serve as a welcome escape from the real world if only for a little while. These tips make it simple to get started planning your big escape with ideas centered on some of the most common specialty rooms, as well as a solution for fitting the ideas into a smaller home. Create a space for crafts. If you find your frazzled senses defraying with a little threading therapy, look to create a space that celebrates this pastime. With the rise in popularity of websites such as Pinterest, which feature a plethora of DIY ideas, you’ll have ample opportunity to distract your mind and busy your hands. A room designed to let you explore your crafty side can help prevent the kitchen or dining room table from becoming a creative center or wrapping station around the holidays, and allows those areas to remain dedicated to family, food and friendship. It doesn’t have to be just for crafts, though. It can also be a place to settle down with a good book and just relax. Keep your space clutter-free and ready to enjoy with a craft room such as those designed by Wellborn Cabinet, Inc., which can feature spacious storage and expansive countertops, providing ample space to create projects that help decorate both the interior and exterior of the home, or simply to unwind and relieve stress. Don’t dismiss cars, bars and sports. If a room free of frou-frou decor where you can just unwind is more your ticket, a man cave may be just the answer. Man caves come in all shapes and sizes, from rowdy dens for sports fanatics to workshops decked out with the tools of your trade. Even if decorating isn’t your thing, look for ways to make the place your own, whether you display trophies from your hunting excursions or decor emblazoned with the logos of your favorite sports teams. This is the room that allows you to relish in the hobbies you enjoy most. If there isn’t a spare room or basement available, the garage can serve as a good alternative. With specific spots for tools and lawn care products – or even that car or motorcycle collection – the garage can meet the same needs as a more traditional man cave. When two rooms become one. Whether space limitations prohibit separate quarters, or you simply prefer to share your hobby time with a partner, you can create a specialty room that accommodates both your interests with a little creativity and planning. Working as a team, you can find the right accessories and storage to design a getaway for two. For example, a creative room from Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. offers more than 600 door styles, wood types and combinations. The result is a chance to combine two rooms, such as the man cave and craft room, for a sanctuary you can build and enjoy together. Find more inspiration for personal spaces and tools to maximize your space and storage at wellborn.com.

Accessorize Your Personal Space

If creating a space all your own feels like a daunting project, these clever tips from the experts at Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. will help get you closer to a room you can get ready to enjoy: n Charging Solutions: Install a charging station in a drawer for phones or other handheld devices. Power and docking stations can easily hide devices and ports yet keep them readily accessible. n Accessory Racks and Holders: Hooks for tools or coats keep them off of other furniture, including countertops where they can pile up and detract from your workspace. Cubby inserts and baskets help keep your things organized on shelves. n Sliding Shelves: Sliding shelves, drawers and baskets let you organize tools or crafting accessories while providing easy access to the items you’ve tucked away.

3 surprising home elements you can automate

Just a decade or two ago, home automation was still something of a novelty. Some homeowners might have had programmable thermostats in their homes, but many probably hadn’t thought of automating things like window coverings. Moreover, they likely viewed any home automation they did have as a convenience. Today, home automation is becoming an essential efficiency-enhancing element in many homes. Right now, just fewer than 6 percent of American households have automated homes, but within four years that percentage is expected to triple to nearly 19 percent, according to data compiled by Statista.com. What’s driving more people to automate their homes? A report by icontrol networks found security, cost savings and ecofriendly energy efficiency are what people find most exciting about home automation. Heating and cooling, lighting and security systems are among the most common elements automated in homes, but they’re far from the only ones that can save you money and make your home more efficient. Here are three surprising things you can automate in your home to further improve efficiency, boost energy savings and lower energy costs: Window coverings Shades, drapes, blinds, and awnings can all help control the amount of heat and light that enter your home. Selecting window coverings to block out light and heat in summer, and admit light in winter, can help your home’s heating and cooling systems work more efficiently. However, the effectiveness of window coverings hinges on opening and closing them at the right time - something you may forget to do, or not be home to do. Automating and powering window coverings can help automatically maximize their effectiveness. Depending on the climate where you live, automating window coverings could yield energy savings of 1120 percent, according to a study commissioned by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). Somfy’s motorized solutions easily integrate with any home automation system, regardless of brand or technology, and offer many options for controlling window coverings. Select from a wide variety of handheld remotes, sensors, wall switches, and the myLink app that allows you to control your motorized window coverings from mobile devices. Door locks

If you’ve ever been locked out of your house or had a guest arrive at your home when you were out, you probably wished there was some way to unlock your front door without a key - and from miles away. Smart locks allow you to do both those things and more. You can replace or supplement an existing lock by installing a smart lock, and you won’t need a professional locksmith to do it. If you can install a regular lock and operate a smartphone, you have the expertise you need to add and use a smart lock. In addition to allowing you to lock and unlock your door without a key, smart locks also allow you to operate the lock remotely from an app on your phone. You can also receive alerts when the door has been unlocked - a great way to track the comings and goings of latchkey kids. Many allow you to generate a single-use digital key that you can email to guests or service providers who may need to enter your home when you’re not there. Smart locks can also be paired with most popular home automation systems. Smart appliances Many appliance makers are offering smart, connected appliances with the big draw being their “wow factor.” However, some of the features of these appliances do hold the potential to improve a home’s efficiency and energy savings. For example, a refrigerator that tracks groceries and lets you know when you’re about to run out of an important item could help you better plan your shopping trips. Fewer car trips conserves gas and reduces greenhouse emissions. Cooking is another area where automation can relieve some of the energy waste caused by human error. Smart ovens and cooktops can sense when to turn themselves off in case you forget to do it - reducing energy waste and fire risks. More homeowners are discovering the convenience, security and efficiency advantages of home automation. Technology is helping make American homes more livable and enjoyable. -(BPT)

With all the time off, the holiday season is a great time to earn sweat equity on your home. Here are 3 easy projects anyone can do to increase the value of their home.

1. FIX THE SIMPLE THINGS

There are many common things around the house like hinges, wheels on doors, light bulbs, electrical switches, running toilets, and even faucets that are relatively simple items to address. There are many helpful people at your local hardware store that will happily help you figure out how to solve these issues. Your home will attract a higher price if there is less to fix.

2. CREATE A FRESH OUTDOOR SPACE

The outdoor spaces are very important to many buyers. There are many simple things you can do around the yard including planting fresh flowers, cleaning overgrown areas, trimming trees, power washing patios, and cleaning outdoor appliances that can really increase the appeal of your property by making the outdoor space feel fresh.

3. PAINTING IN STYLE

You’ve seen all the home improvement shows and the house flipping shows. What’s the one thing that always gets the most bang for the buck? Interior paint of course. I would love to help you choose paint colors that are most popular with buyers in the current market. Painting is easy and can even be fun. Almost anyone can do it!
