Add years to your pet’s life with these tips By Jodi Ziskin Few things in life are as special as the unconditional love and loyalty a pet provides. With 78.2 million owned dogs and 86.4 million owned cats in the United States, according to The Humane Society, it’s obvious Americans enjoy having pets. What might not be so apparent is how best to care for them. When it comes to making sure your pet stays healthy and lives as long as possible, what steps can you take? Tips for adding years to your pet’s life include: 1. Investigate pet food While many pet parents feed their cats and dogs the same thing day after day, they may not realize it’s a habit that can lead to nutritional deficiencies and food intolerances. Try a holistic approach to a pet’s diet. That simply means using real, whole food, not by-products, rendered ingredients, artificial colors, artificial flavors or preservatives. Homemade (cooked or raw) is optimal. If a pet guardian is not interested in preparing homemade food, the next best thing is frozen raw food. All the pet parent has to do is defrost portions in the refrigerator overnight. Freeze-dried or dehydrated raw food is another good option. Finally, there are a handful of canned foods that are very high quality.
I suggest to always reading the label when selecting food. The first ingredient should be a high-quality meat, like de-boned white chicken. If the first ingredients are different types of grains and starches, then that food should be avoided. 2. Consider supplements Many people take multivitamins and other supplements to better their health, and this practice can benefit pets too. There are many factors that contribute to a pet’s lifespan. Some are out of our control, like genetic, congenital and environmental factors. However, providing a species-appropriate diet, including supplements like omega-3s, contributes to overall wellness, helping pets thrive. Supplementing a pet’s diet with omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) has many health benefits, including healthy skin and coat, reduced inflammation that causes itching and hot spots, joint health with less inflammation, strong immune system and a healthier digestive tract. Using fish oils specially made for pets is highly recommended. 3. Prioritize play and rest Exercise is paramount to the physical health of cats and dogs. After all, a body in motion stays in motion. The simple act of walking a
dog (or cat) helps to lubricate joints, preserves flexibility, maintains muscle mass (which protects joints), and keeps blood circulating through the joints and muscles. Make time every day to play with your pets. Cats need only five to 10 minutes once or twice a day for interactive play. On days when you simply do not have a minute to spare, hide some cat toys around the house. Some high, some low. Your kitty will get extra exercise by finding and playing with their ‘prey. Walking a dog once or twice a day is good for both you and your pet. If you cannot devote the time, please look into hiring a dog walker. Since it is detrimental to a dog’s health to have him hold urine all day long,
having a dog walker come midday is optimal. Remember, resting periods are just as important as physical activity. Spending quiet time with our pets is so important for their overall wellbeing. The simple act of petting a dog reduces their stress and helps them feel secure. The same is true for cats, however, most cats do not liked to be stroked for a long period of time. In addition to these tips, I advise pet owners of young and middleaged pets to see their vet annually. Older pets should see the vet at least twice a year. This helps ensure you and your furry family members have many happy, healthy years to look forward to.

ELKS HONOR MEMBERS FOR YEARS OF SERVICE Mission Viejo / Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge No. 2444 (“Elks Lodge”) conducted their annual tribute to members for years of service at a recent meeting. This year’s event, which was well attended by Elks members and guests, recognized years of tenure from one (1) to fiftyfive (55). Lodge President Camacho Alvarez presided over the meeting. Lodge Secretary Norm Jones acted as master of ceremonies. Over 130 service pins were awarded. Secretary Jones said of the event, “Pins are awarded for five-year increments of service. We affectionately call it ‘Old Timers Night’ and it is always a fun filled get-together for the recipients and attendees. There is always lots of storytelling from the older members about the early history of our Lodge.” Over one hundred members were awarded five through thirty-year pins. 25 year pins went to Vincent Carnevale, Rod Coloma, and Duane Nielson of Mission Viejo, Howard Sargent of Aliso Viejo, Louis Raymond of Newport Beach, and Mike Marquis of Laguna Niguel. 35 year service pins went to Andy Costello, and Clint Sherrod of Laguna Hills, Ron Begley of Laguna Woods, and Walt Fitchett of Palm Desert. Ron Bauchiero, John Sherburne, Bob Wisniewski of Mission Viejo, and Tim Carney of Henderson NV. Received 40 year pins. Dave Jones of Mission Viejo received a 45 year pin. Celebrating Page 4

Our Lodge now has over one thousand members and we pride ourselves on the increasing numbers of younger men and women who are becoming members. We love to see those young families here enjoying Twenty-five year members Ron Begley, Mike Marquis, Howard Sargent, themselves at a Friday night dinner as they are certainly the future of our and Lodge President Camacho Alvarez Elks. Alvarez added, “Nevertheless, I think it is great when we honor our old timers. They are the people who built and made this Elks Lodge the charitable organization it is today.” The Mission Viejo / Saddleback Elks Lodge No. 2444, celebrating forty-five (45) years of service to the Saddleback Valley communities, is one of ten lodges in the Orange Coast District of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) whose headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois. Hossein Nayeri, 37, had been held without bond since September 2014, charged with kidnapping, torture, aggravated mayhem and burglary. Nayeri and two other men are accused of kidnapping a California marijuana dispensary owner in 2012, driving him to a spot in the desert where they believed he had hidden money and then torturing him. Deputy District Attorney Heather Brown told the The Orange County Register that Nayeri was a likely candidate to have planned the escape. She described him as diabolical, sophisticated, violent and cunning. “My first reaction was ‘Oh, my God, they let Hannibal Lecter out,’” she told the newspaper. A lawyer representing one of Nayeri’s codefendants in the 2012 case told the Los Angeles Times that when he heard about the escape, he immediately thought that Nayeri was the mastermind and had recruited the others. Lawyer Robert Weinberg said the savagery of the kidnapping case was an indication of how dangerous
Nayeri could be while on the run. Nayeri, Bac Duong, 43, and Jonathan Tieu, 20, were discovered missing from the Orange County Central Men’s Jail in Santa Ana on Friday, about 15 hours after they were present for an early morning head count. Authorities say the men cut through steel into duct work, climbed to the jail roof, but through a section of razor wire and rappelled down using makeshift rope apparently made from bedsheets. Sheriff’s Lt. David Sawyer said the men should be considered extremely dangerous and may be hiding in the area. All are accused of violent crimes, and at least one is connected to Vietnamese gangs in the area, Sawyer said. “We feel that they may be embedded somewhere in the community, and that is why we are reaching out to the community,” Sawyer said. Sawyer said someone in the area must know where they are or where they are headed. He said the identity of anyone who provided information could be protected. Rewards for
information leading to their capture total about $50,000. “We understand that you are in danger. We understand that you are fearful,” Sawyer said. “But it’s an obligation that you come out and let us know” where they are. He said there was no indication that any prison employees were involved in the escape. No suspensions had been issued, he said. Duong was being held without bond since last month on charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm and other charges. Tieu had been held since October 2013 on $1 million bond on charges of murder, attempted murder and shooting at an inhabited dwelling. His case is believed to be gang-related.A $200,000.00 reward is reportedly being offered for information leading to the recapture of the three escapees, who are described as armed and dangerous.If you see these suspects do not approach , but call 911.

FI N AL STEEL B EA M HOISTE D TO THE ROOF OF LA D ERA RA N C H ’ S N EWEST M ULTIUSE FA C ILITY More Than 100 Community Leaders, Sign Beam at Topping Out Ceremony Last November An enormous construction crane groaned as it hoisted the final steel beam to the top of a $35 million solar-powered multiuse facility in Ladera Ranch, Calif., at what is called a “topping out” ceremony last November. Applause swept through the crowd of onlookers who gathered to celebrate the milestone event for the facility, which is expected to open by summer 2016. The 700 lb. beam is covered with signatures, including those from young athletes who will have a new team home at the complex’s Ladera Sports Center. “This facility will be the Staple Center for the training of young volleyball and basketball athletes. This is a place where athletes are going to train Monday through Friday to hone their athletic skills. In addition, on weekends we’re going to have some of the most competitive basketball and volleyball tournaments in the country,” said H. Michael Schwartz, CEO and chairman of SmartStop Asset Management, who designed, financed and is developing the facility. “Ladera Ranch is perfectly suited for those types of tournaments due to its proximity to San Diego, Los Angeles and, in addition, the beach.” The approximately 120,000-squarefoot complex, located at 2 Terrace Road In Ladera Ranch, Calif., will include a 63,400-square-foot gymnasium—which will be open to the public—with eight full-sized basketball/volleyball courts, student study rooms, a 3,380-square-foot strength and conditioning space as well as gym offices. In addition, the facility will house a 42,000-squarefoot storage facility with approximately 230 units operated by ExtraSpace Storage; a private fitness center; and more than 15,000+ square feet of office space for SmartStop Asset Management expanding headquarters. Athletic leagues and clubs in South Orange County are especially excited about the sports center,
which will allow teams to hold all practices, games and tournaments under one roof. Five different organizations already have signed long-term agreements to rent the facility, claiming almost 80 percent of the weekday capacity. “I’ve been in basketball community in South Orange County for a while, and there is just no space for anyone to play basketball here,” said Ladera Sports Center CEO Steve Williams, who will manage day-to-day activities at the center, including team planning and rentals. “Our goal was to try to build our own facility that incorporated the best of all worlds. So we looked around the country at all different kinds of facilities and put all the good into one facility. So the kids will have uninterrupted practices, be on the same court every day all year round. This sports center is going to be a great service to the community.” Organizations committed to using the facility include: Team Nikos Basketball Academy, Ladera Ranch National Junior Basketball, Little Rookies Youth Sports, San Clemente Volleyball Club, and Ladera Ranch Strength and Conditioning. The new gymnasium will have air conditioning and noise decibel reduction systems, superior wood flooring to absorb high impacts and ceiling-mounted basketball hoops and volleyball nets. Live webcastenabled cameras on each court will allow parents and sports team scouts to watch games or practices remotely or buy recorded DVDs. Working Wardrobes Cheers 25 years with a Gala to Remember! Working Wardrobes celebrated its 25th Anniversary in style with a sold out crowd of 350 for a very special evening at the Hotel Irvine. “Cheers to 25 Years” will be an event and evening that I will cherish forever” said Jerri Rosen, CEO and Founder of the organization. Guests enjoyed delicious food and drinks, live music and dancing, and an exciting auction. All proceeds from the event directly benefited the important programs and services at Working Wardrobes dedicated to empowering clients to experience the dignity of work. The evening started off with an incredible line up of over 25 silent auction baskets for guests to bid on while enjoying appetizers and cocktails. A few of the popular auction items included an autographed basketball by LA Lakers legend, Gail Goodrich, paired with suite tickets to a game; an in-home wine tasting certificate including 12 different bottles of high end wine; a romantic weekend getaway to Santa Barbara; and Wienershnitzel Wagon private party for 50 guests. Keeping the excitement rolling, the enthusiastic auctioneer, Zack Krone, kicked off the live auction portion of the night by offering guests a box of nothing!! Believe it or not…this box of nothing raised $2,000! The live auction was a bidding frenzy as folks raised their paddles to some amazing items up for grabs. Lucky winners walked away with spectacular auction items, including a trip to South Africa; a 5-night stay in Paris; skydiving packages with the Navy SEALS; weekend use of a Maserati; exquisite diamonds; luxury restaurant date nights, and more! A highlight of the evening was hearing the touching stories of two Working Wardrobes clients Andrea and Bill who both faced incredibly difficult circumstances, and who today are happily employed and living successful lives. Dinner was served - folks enjoyed a New York steak in garlic truffle butter with sautéed asparagus and potatoes au gratin. Guests had a choice of two delicious desserts – double chocolate mousse cake or pumpkin cheesecake with raspberry sauce. Opportunity items were up for grabs as well – guests purchased tickets to hopefully win. Three lucky winners walked away with a weekend stay at La Quinta Resort; an Apple Watch and iPad Mini; and a VIP experience for 4 at The Magic Castle. Afterwards, everyone rocked out to the tunes from the band “Best of Everything”. South Coast Repertory’s Pinocchio Clowns Around in the Theatre for Young Audiences Series The tale of the naughty puppet hoping to become a real boy gets an infusion of music, clowning and fun when South Coast Repertory’s Theatre for Young Audiences series presents Pinocchio by Greg Banks, based on the classic story by Carlo Collodi. Driving with dogs: Tips to keep everyone in the car safe It’s only natural for man’s best friend to stay close by his master’s side, but for dog owners who drive frequently, bringing Fido along for the ride can be risky. The problem is particularly worrisome for older drivers; a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham showed that for people 70 years and older, crash rates were higher among those who frequently drove with pets in the car. But for many drivers, leaving precious pets behind isn’t an option. The best compromise is to find solutions that will get you from point A to point B without compromising the safety of human or animal passengers. Distracted driving is a growing concern and a loose pet in the car certainly numbers among the potential hazards that can take your eyes - and mind - off the road and lead to accidents. While older drivers might not be as likely to be distracted by texting or smartphone surfing, even those who have spent many years navigating the roads need to honestly assess how having a pet in the car can divert their attention away
from the road. To stay safe on the road when Fido is with you, remember these tips: * Don’t allow pets in the front seats. Having a pet sit on your lap is obviously distracting, but if he’s in the front passenger seat, the problem can be just as bad. In the front seats, your pet is more likely to be within your line of sight and obstruct your view of the road. An unrestrained dog in the front seats could also be easily injured if you have to slam on the brakes or swerve, or are hit from behind. The force with which airbags deploy also poses a safety hazard for dogs in the front seat - if you’re in an accident and they inflate and hit your dog, he could easily sustain an injury. * Create separation. There are a variety of pet barriers on the market that can keep your pet from moving between the front and back seats of your car. Installing a barrier will help keep your pet out of your way and diminish concerns about him being propelled forward in case you have to make a sudden stop. * Restrain your pet. There are a number of options for pet restraints
in your vehicle. Pet seatbelts and car seats will help keep a dog safely in place. Keeping a crate in the car is also a good option. Make sure it’s secured and large enough so that he can stand up, turn around and comfortably sit or lay down. Add a soft pad in the bottom of the crate and it might just become your pet’s favorite new way to travel. * Brush up on your driving skills. Today’s driving environment is probably very different than it was when you first got your license. A refresher course, like those offered by AARP Driver Safety, is an ideal
way to ensure that your skills are up to date. Brushing up on defensive driving techniques and the essential rules of the road will help keep everyone in your car safe and you may even qualify for a multi-year automobile insurance discount from your insurance company (check with your agent for details). AARP Driver Safety courses are available in a classroom or online setting, in both English and Spanish. Pets are important members of the family, so it’s only right that drivers consider their safety, just as they would for any other passenger.

Few things are as exciting as bringing home a new puppy. Whether Chihuahua or Great Dane, a pup’s playful antics delight people of all ages. Having a dog can bring many years of companionship and precious memories, but before you ask, “How much is that doggie in the window?” consider a few expert tips for positive housetraining. Responsible pet parents start planning long before bringing a puppy home. “Research your lifestyle - what your living accommodations are. Do breed research into what you want the pet for,” says Dr. Chris Stearns, partner at Dalton Animal Care clinic in Dalton, Ga. “It’s so important to have the right environment - enough room indoors and out, and enough attention.” Talk with different people who
can share insight about the breeds you are considering. Veterinarians, trainers, groomers and breeders can provide valuable information about what dogs are best for your lifestyle, and what to expect for each in regard to training. Stearns, along with Stephanie Daughtrey, a certified animal behaviorist at the clinic, offers these important tips for housetraining your puppy and keeping your home intact in the process. 1. Know potty triggers Start by understanding your puppy’s potty triggers. What exactly stimulates a pup’s bladder and digestive system? While it varies from dog to dog, triggers are typically feelings of excitement, like when visitors arrive, and particular times of day, like after he wakes up or right before bed. Keep in mind, puppies will need to go after eating and/or drinking - usually within 15 minutes. 2. Establish a routine Find a designated “potty patch” outdoors so your dog can associate that space with doing his business. Start by leash walking the pup to that spot so he can focus before spending any time playing. If your dog doesn’t go, consider keeping him on a leash inside too. Rotate 15 minutes inside and 15 minutes outside. Stay close to your
new furry family member. If he starts to circle and sniff, in that familiar way, take him outside. If he starts to squat to urinate, clap or make a sharp sound that will stop him in the act. You can transfer him outside to finish and praise him there. “Young puppies learn through positive reinforcement - not negative. Give them a treat when they go potty outside - that reinforces the good behavior right then and there. Praise them with a happy tone of voice,” says Stearns. 3. Avoid indoor accidents Accept that a puppy will need to go outside every one or two hours. It’s the owner’s responsibility to provide plenty of time outdoors, otherwise if left unattended for extended periods, a puppy will find a place to piddle. “Close the doors out of the room where the puppy is - get baby gates to seal off other areas. A puppy will seek out areas of the house that are not part of the ‘family den’,” says Daughtrey. 4. Clean messes immediately “Accidents will happen,” says Stearns. “Expect it and work with it when it happens. You must deodorize it, so he can’t use it as a scentmarking area. Use a product that does more than just mask the odor - it needs to enzymatically destroy the chemical in the urine.”
Start by blotting to absorb as much liquid as possible. Then treat the mess with a pet stain and odor remover that has the Carpet and Rug Institute Seal of Approval. Each certified product that features the national trade association’s seal goes through rigorous testing in an independent laboratory, so you can be confident you’re treating the stain, removing the odors, and protecting the integrity of your carpet. If your carpet becomes deeply soiled from multiple accidents and dirty little puppy paws, you may want to consider hiring a professional carpet cleaner. For those with allergies, frequent vacuuming and regularlyscheduled cleaning will remove virtually all embedded allergens and pet dander. According to Dr. von Simson, although you may be tempted - and your dog or cat may beg - remember to stop yourself before giving your pet a table scrap, leftover or bone. “You may make him happy for the moment, but it could create serious digestive problems for him in the long run,” he says. “So instead of sharing human food, give him an appropriate pet treat.” 2. Pest prevention You don’t like to be bitten by pesky bugs - well, neither does your four-legged friend. While you may know that fleas and ticks may cause misery and disease for your pets, you may not know that these parasites can be active year-round, waiting for their chance to attack and feed on your dog or cat.
