YOUR HOLIDAY SHOPPING GUIDE : 4 WAYS TO CUT THROUGH THE CLUTTER THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but for you and your family, it’s also the busiest. The holidays bring trips to book, parties to plan, meals to cook, homes to clean and of course, work and school schedules to manage. On top of that, you have to tackle perhaps the most daunting task of all - the holiday shopping list. Can it be done? Of course it can! But you can make it a little easier with these four tips guaranteed to cut through the clutter and streamline holiday shopping. * Make your list and check it twice. Along with making a holiday budget, create a detailed list of everyone you need to buy for. Include specific sizes and the dollar amount you plan to spend on each person to save you time when you hit the store. You can also save your list to your phone for easy access right at your fingertips. * Stock up and spread cheer this year. Make sure to stock up on a few generic, gender-neutral gifts to have on hand during the holidays should you receive an unexpected gift from your next-door neighbor or mailman.
This way, you will be prepared to spread the joy of gifting no matter who shares it first! * Decide which deals belong on the naughty and nice list. Use your smartphone or other mobile device to

research a store’s holiday deals ahead of time. For example, some prices are for limited time. * Make sure the gifts under your tree are price match guarantee. Most stores offer price match guarantees
throughout the year, but especially during the holiday season. Hold on to your receipts and keep an eye out for new ads and sales as the holidays get closer. Price matching could be your ticket to further holiday savings.

STAR TREK NEXT GENERATION HOUSE FOR SALE
When Gene Roddenberry wrote the line “Live long and prosper,” in his 1966 television series Star Trek, little did he know that it would be a self-fulfilling prophecy that the series would thrive and continue to be recreated in many forms well into the next century. Its popularity has had generations of Trekkies all over the world scrambling to grab collectibles from the series and one of the best collectibles of them all is the house where the Season 3 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation that aired in 1989 was filmed. It has just hit the market for $5.695 million. Almost a century - in space time - after Spock and Captain Kirk set out on the original Enterprise to explore space, Star Trek: The Next Generation was the second liveaction television series and had an average of 20 million viewers while it ran from 1989 to 1990. Also created by Gene Roddenberry, it was set in the 24th century and was produced at Paramount Pictures syndicated in the U.S. by Viacom. It was so successful with its faithful Trekkies that it led to two spin-offs: Star Trek: Deep Space and Star Trek: Voyager. Trekkies will also be thrilled to know that it was just announced that there will soon be a two-season Star Trek: Lower Decks, a half-hour animated comedy about the support staff serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships.
Page 4
Lower Decks is the second animated series of the Star Trek franchise, which was preceded by Star Trek: The Animated Series, which aired from 1973 to 1974. The entire Star Trek series has won multiples in every conceivable award and includes a Peabody Award in 1988. One of the main stars in Season 3 of The Next Generation was this playfully eclectic, European contemporary-style house which was the main location in which Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his Starship Enterprise crew, including Lt. Worf, land on a seemingly deserted planet. They find two people who appear to have miraculously survived a disaster that claimed the lives of the rest of the population. In the film, the house and grounds appear exactly as they do today, but with the magic of film showed a vast wasteland surrounding the property. Their entire neighborhood for as far as the eye could see, was stolen by a massive spaceship which they were unable to identify. Designed by futuristic architect/ artist and furniture designer Ellis Gelman, the eye popping wedgeshaped house features both circular and triangular windows, as well as dramatic angles. Sited on over two acres on the Pacific Coast Highway, the four-bedroom, four-bath home features a large open-concept main

living area with soaring wood clad ceilings and spectacular views. It has a chef’s kitchen with emeraldstone counter tops, breakfast bar and built-ins, media/family room with kitchenette, loft, 440-square-foot ocean view terrace with glass railing ideal for indoor/outdoor entertaining. There are two fireplaces, master suite with spa-like bath, sound system, slate tile and bamboo flooring, two-car garage, 10-car parking, a detached guest unit/office/gym with bath, an enclosed patio with a lavender and
rose garden. It’s the house made for the serious Trekkie collector who can become a part of his beloved fiction and imagine himself in the first Season 3 scene walking up to the house in wonder just like Captain Jean-Luc Picard did in 1989. New to the market priced at $5.695 million, the listing agent is Ani Dermenjian of Coldwell Banker, Malibu, California. TRANSFORM YOUR HOME IN A WEEKEND WITH THESE DO IT YOURSELF PROJECTS
Summertime isn’t just for vacations or weekends at the cabin. Summer weekends - with longer days - are ideal opportunities for quick and inexpensive DIY projects that make a big statement around the home. The average American homeowner spent nearly $3,000 on home improvements in 2015, according to a Statista report. The following list of affordable projects can be achieved for a fraction of that cost.
Create wood accents Use flooring to make headboards and accent walls. Retailers like Lumber Liquidators offer a variety of styles of flooring such as laminates, engineered, vinyl, click ceramic plank and more, and these flooring materials can easily be incorporated into many accent features. The flooring material can be affixed to walls and other surfaces with a special acrylic flooring tape. Flooring comes in a variety of styles, which can also be cut into striking patterns like chevron or herringbone. Install butcher block countertops Butcher block is a warm and rustic countertop style that’s affordable and increasingly popular. Made from strips of wood bonded together, it can be sliced and chopped on directly - a great option for the minimalist homeowner. Installation is DIYfriendly, making butcher block an ideal weekend project with a good step-by-step tutorial in hand. Build a trellis
Building a garden trellis is a great way to draw more attention to what your green thumb has created. Dedicate Friday to sizing the trellis and cutting and framing the pieces, Saturday to building the panels and assembling and Sunday for digging the holes and setting the trellis into place. Tailor to what’s best for your backyard by building out of wood, bamboo or PVC pipe. Repurposed planters When gardening outside isn’t an option, bring the garden inside by making unique planter boxes. A DIY planter box is typically more affordable than store-bought, and the design possibilities are endless. Reuse vessels like shipping crates, Mason jars and tin boxes. Personalize them with colors and patterns to match your interior and inject personality and life into your space. Add crown molding Crown molding adds distinguished curves and angles to a ceiling, instantly elevating a room to a

SAN JUAN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL CELEBRATES KINDNESS WEEK During the week of November 12-16, San Juan Hills High School celebrated “Kindness Week,” the brainchild of the SJHHS Compassion Crew. The Compassion Crew, a group of volunteer teachers and staff members dedicated to spreading positivity and kindness around campus, was formed last year following the tragic events of the Stoneman Douglas High School Shooting in Florida. The committee of teachers and staff was inspired by the power of kindness and a positive school culture to help prevent these horrible tragedies from occurring and, while they support kindness and compassion year-round, Kindness Week was a weeklong set of events to help celebrate that! This year, during each day of SJHHS Teachers Celebrate Kindness Week Kindness Week, different activities were planned for students and staff, planned by the Compassion Crew and supported by school administration and ASB. These activities included: • Tuesday: Students and staff received yellow “Be Kind” bracelets to wear all week and made a pledge to spread compassion and kindness around campus. Students were also asked to send kind text messages to friends and family members and commit to positive interactions on social media. Staff also hung large yellow sunflowers on their doors and windows with inspirational quotes about kindness. • Wednesday: A “Kindness Wall” was hung up in the upper quad on campus filled with Post-Its full of positive messages that students could hand out to friends around campus. ASB also passed our random “Kindness Grams” (a kind message with candy) to students Kindness Wall during lunch. • Thursday: Students received yellow “Keep Calm and Be Kind” t-shirts to wear around campus on Friday. • Friday: All students and staff were asked to wear yellow and attend a school-wide Kindness Celebration with music in the upper quad at lunch. Students could also fill out a paper link to the Kindness Chain and turn it in for a free churro at lunch. As the week drew to a close and students headed off on Thanksgiving Break, consensus among staff and students was that Kindness Week was a huge success! As Compassion Crew member and teacher Kristen Osborn said, “We want to be a school that believes in empathy and compassion and respect for one another. We hope that this week was able to highlight and build upon these qualities which we believe are already present at SJHHS.” Kindness Week Shirts

TIPS TO CONQUER YOUR PACKING CHALLENGES WHILE TRAVELING Whether it’s business travel, family road tripping or a romantic getaway, exploring new places is exciting. You may be counting down the days until you leave, but if there’s one thing you dread, it’s packing. Deciding what earns a spot in your suitcase is hard enough, let alone figuring out how you can fit it all in. Do you look with envy at savvy jetsetters who seem to navigate airports with ease while only toting a small carry-on? It’s because years of travel experience has taught them some packing tricks that make the process simple. Now you can use these same strategies to pack with ease no matter how near or far you plan to travel. Select double-duty clothing items. Check the weather for your destination so you pack only items appropriate for the forecast. You won’t need that big sunhat if rain is coming. Want to take it one step further? Choose items that multitask. For example, a large scarf can be a stylish accessory and also be used as a blanket on the plane or at the beach. Pack toiletries strategically. If possible, only bring samples and travel sizes of items to save space. Then leave them behind at the end
of the trip to open up luggage space to bring home mementos. To avoid luggage spills and explosions, place toiletries in plastic bags or add plastic wrap to the tops before screwing on the cap. Choose time-saving tools. Air drying hair takes forever and hotel hair dyers are often slow and unreliable, so pack a lightweight, folding dryer like the Panasonic EHNA27-K Nanoe Compact Hair Dryer to streamline your beauty routine. The nanoe technology draws moisture from the air to create moisture-rich ions that penetrate each hair shaft and enhance hair’s smoothness and shine. Need more incentive? The unique Quick-Dry Nozzle is designed to dry hair faster, so you can spend less time getting ready and more time enjoying your vacation. Fold to prevent wrinkling. To prevent wrinkles on delicate items, try wrapping them around soft, bulky items. For example, wrap a silk blouse or cotton trousers around a sweater. Avoid folding clothing any more than necessary. In fact, many people use a rolling method for packing clothes to save space and prevent wrinkles.
Utilize odd-shaped items. Shoes take up a ton of luggage space, so strive to select no more than three pairs, and wear the heaviest or bulkiest pair while traveling. Place shoes along the sides or bottom to strengthen the bag and then stash items inside to maximize space (like socks, nylons and deodorant). Eliminate makeup mayhem. Only bring makeup essentials on a vacation and pack multi-use items such as a lipstick that can also be used as a blush. To prevent shadows
and pressed powders from cracking, place a pressed cotton pad between the powder and the lid. Grab a few plastic bags. One of the most versatile things you can bring on a trip is also one many people forget: resealable plastic bags. Whether you need a bag for bringing toys down to the pool, a place to put dirty clothes throughout your trip, or something to place that soggy swimsuit in before you check out of the hotel, plastic bags are your secret weapon. - (BPT)

blend. It began commercially in 1968 and now can be placed in the same row as a first-growth Bordeaux, grand cru Burgundy or a Napa Valley cult wine. Why was 2015 a #1 year for Sassacaia? It’s in the vintage. Wine Spectator called 2015 “ripe and opulent fruit with purity and elegance.” Europe is anything but consistent with their weather patterns. The year before was a near-disaster due to chill and too much rain that slowed down ripening. The 2015 has 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc and enjoyed milder temperatures and a lot more sunny weather that came early and stayed. Occasional heavy rains came at the right time, late spring, to help flowering followed
by budding. Manual harvest ended in late September. Grapes were crisp and healthy. 17,200 cases were produced. Piero Antinori is credited with developing Sassacaia into a world class wine, adding to his legacy of making some of the finest wines to come from Italy. Wise aging will bring out the best in this wine. Five years is suggested. For a look at the top 100 wines from Wine Spectator, go to www. winespectator.com.

INA GARTEN: BAREFOOT CONTESSA RETURNS TO SEGERSTROM CENTER FOR THE ARTS Ina Garten, the American culinary icon, author of 10 New York Times bestselling cookbooks and host of the popular Emmy and James Beard Award-winning Barefoot Contessa Back to Basics show on Food Network, returns to Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Wednesday, December 5. Garten is celebrating her newest cookbook, Cook Like A Pro. She will share stories that bring you behind the scenes of filming her television show (now in its 13th season), writing bestselling cookbooks and enjoying food with friends and family. She will also take questions from the audience. Tickets for Ina Garten start at $49.50 and go on sale Friday, May 11 at 7 a.m. They may be purchased online at SCFTA.org, the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 556-2787. For inquiries about group ticket savings for 20 or more, call the Group Services office at (714) 755-0236. From America’s favorite home cook: recipes, tips, and why-didn’t-I-thinkof-that tricks for cooking your best. In her newest instant-classic cookbook, beloved author Ina Garten shares 85 never-before-published recipes that teach home cooks dependably delicious dishes along with the keys to achieving success and confidence in the kitchen. As seen on her latest television series, Cook Like A Pro, each recipe focuses on techniques, tips, insights, make-ahead guidance, and kitchen efficiency that will turn you into a better and more intuitive cook. From Red Wine Braised Short Ribs to Blue Cheese Grits and a simplified Baked Alaska that will wow your friends, this collection represents Ina’s go-to recipes and techniques that every cook wants to know. In 1978, Ina Garten was working in The White House Office of Management and Budget and thinking that she had to do something more creative and fun than writing nuclear energy budgets! She came across an ad in The New York Times for a specialty food store for sale in the Hamptons and decided to investigate. With her husband Jeffrey, she drove to Long Island the next day to see the store and it was love at first sight. She had no experience in the food business - or in any business! - but knew that this was exactly what she wanted to do. Garten made the owner of the store a low offer, thinking she’d go home and decide if she really wanted to make such a dramatic move. However, the owner called her the next day and said, “I accept
your offer!” After 18 years of perfecting baguettes and chicken salad, Barefoot Contessa was a hugely popular store celebrated both for its delicious food and its style. In 1996, Garten decided that it was time for a new challenge so she sold the store to the manager and the chef. At that point, with nothing to do, she built an office over the store and tried her hand at writing a cookbook. The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook came out in 1999 and turned out to be the most exciting thing she’d ever done professionally. Happily, that first cookbook was a surprise best-seller. By 2002, Garten had published two more cookbooks and started filming a show for Food Network, also called Barefoot Contessa. By 2015, she had published nine cookbooks and filmed 14 years of television shows for Food Network. At the same time, she’d written monthly columns for Martha Stewart Living, Oprah magazine, and House Beautiful. She continues to write a monthly column for Food Network Magazine. This past year marked the publication of Garten’s tenth book, Cooking for Jeffrey, which is not just a collection of recipes for dishes that Jeffrey adores, but it’s also a bit of a love letter to her husband for always encouraging her to do what she loves most. Williams Sonoma is proud to be the official bookseller of Cook Like A Pro for this exciting event. Ticket holders will be able to purchase autographed copies of Ina’s new book in advance of the event by visiting: https://www. williams-sonoma.com/cooklikeapro. Books purchased in advance through Williams Sonoma will be available for pick up at the event. Please note that event tickets and signed books are sold separately, and you must have an event ticket to pick up your preordered book. A limited supply of signed books will be available for purchase in the lobby on the evening of the event as well. Preordering books when purchasing a ticket is strongly recommended. 1. Coto de Caza News Readers can afford your very Best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Coto de Caza News one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Coto de Caza, Dove Canyon, and the gated communities surrounding Rancho Santa Margarita have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2. Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Coto de Caza, Dove Canyon and Rancho Santa Margarita? He is also known playing the title role in “Hamlet,” “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead,” “Dogfight,” “Samsara,” “Maple and Vine” and “The Laramie Project.” His recent credits include the musical “Once” at the Lamb’s Players Theatre and “Much Ado About Nothing” at The Old Globe in San Diego. 7 STEPS TO SECURE YOUR HOME WHILE YOU’RE ON VACATION Warmer temperatures, budding trees and blooming flowers are all lovely parts of spring, but what you really look forward to is the start of vacation planning season! Deciding where to go and what to see, making arrangements and planning your wardrobe are all exciting aspects of summer vacation planning. But before you pack up to leave on your getaway, be sure to take care of the most important asset you’ll be leaving at home - your home itself. “Before going away on vacation, homeowners do a lot of things to prepare for the security and safety of their home while away, including stopping the mail, powering down electronics and turning off water and gas,” says Emily Lewicki, brand manager with Coleman Heating and Air Conditioning. “Additionally, it is important to keep in mind that a home’s temperature needs to be monitored, which can easily be done by using a programmable thermostat.” While you’re savoring the fun of your vacation planning, here are seven steps you also should take to prepare your home to remain secure while you’re away: Page 24
1. Stop the mail. Home safety experts agree: a stuffed mailbox is a sign of an empty home. The United States Postal Service allows you to request a vacation hold on your mail up to 30 days before your departure date. Go to holdmail.usps.com to see if this service is available in your area. You should also put newspaper and package delivery on hold, too, as uncollected newspapers or parcels in front of your house could also alert others that you’re not home. 2. Turn off water and gas. If a water or gas leak occurs while you’re not there to address it, the emergency could cause significant damage to your home. You can reduce risks by turning off water flow to appliances like the clothes washer. To conserve energy and money, you can also turn off the gas flow to your water heater. 3. Adjust the thermostat. You don’t need to spend money to heat or cool your home to a comfortable level when you’re not there to enjoy it. Turn down the thermostat, but don’t turn your HVAC system completely off. Extreme temperatures can harm your home and its contents. A programmable thermostat can take care of temperature adjustments
The Coto de Caza News
for you while you’re away. If you don’t already have a programmable thermostat, consider installing a model like Coleman’s Hx(TM) thermostat. The touch-screen interface makes it easy to program the system, plus a free downloadable app allows you to control the thermostat from your smartphone, no matter where you travel. Just be sure to leave your internet connection active at home so your thermostat can communicate with the app while you’re away. 4. Put lights on timers or sensors. A well-lit home looks lived in and is less appealing to burglars. Put outside lights on sensors so they’ll turn on when the sun goes down. Use timers to turn interior lights on and off at appropriate times. 5. Prep your kitchen. Go through the refrigerator and pantry and throw away any food that could go bad while you’re away. No one wants to come home to smelly, spoiled food. Empty the trash and arrange for a neighbor to put the trash at the curb on your scheduled pickup day. Unplug all small appliances like the coffee maker, toaster ovens, food processors, etc. 6. Power down electronic devices.
Items like computers, TVs and phone chargers all draw power while plugged in, even if they’re not switched on. Turn off and unplug electronic devices to reduce power usage in the house and protect electronics from power surges while you’re away. 7. Secure the garage. This is especially important if your home has an attached garage with direct access into your home. Most garage doors have a simple bolt lock that can be engaged from inside to prevent the door from being raised. Remember to also lock the door from the garage into your house. Everyone looks forward to vacation. With some simple prep, you can ensure your home stays secure while you’re away. GRACIOUS ETIQUETTE TIPS TO SURVIVE HOLIDAY GATHERINGS Whether you are hosting a fantastic holiday gathering or you’re the gracious guest, ask yourself this question: Are you comfortable with your knowledge of etiquette? Are you confident in your table manners or do you admit you take your cue by watching those around you? “It seems so many people only think about etiquette during the holidays and then the pressure is on to be perfect,” says etiquette coach Dubravka Vujinovic. “But proper manners should be important at every meal, whether you are sitting down to a formal gathering or casual dinner with friends.” Vujinovic is one of the etiquette experts at North Carolina-based Replacements, Ltd., the world’s largest retailer of old and new china, crystal, silver and collectibles. This time of year the company is bombarded with inquiries from those needing a crash course in
proper social graces and entertaining. Questions range from how to set the table, to the best way to serve the perfect meal. Vujinovic offers these suggestions for your next event. * Break out the buffet Buffets settings are becoming increasingly popular. In this style of setting the host places the food, dinnerware and utensils on a sideboard or table and guests serve themselves. “I love buffets, because they are so stress-free for me as a hostess,” says Vujinovic. “Since the food is already on the serving table, I don’t have to keep running back and forth to the kitchen to keep bringing out different courses or dishes; I can relax and enjoy the evening. On the other hand, as a guest, I like buffets because this setting allows me to eat the food I want; I don’t feel obligated to have to sample everything that is being passed around the table.” If you’re hosting a seated buffet, water glasses should be filled and on the table before your guests sit down to their meal. Guests should be guided to pick up their dinnerware and place it at their individual setting. * Set the perfect table
If you opt to set your table in advance or if you’re a buffet guest setting your own place setting, remember, forks go to the left, knives then spoons to the right. The sharp side of the knife blade should be turned toward the dinner plate. And remember, only include utensils in your place setting that will be used for the courses you are serving; extra pieces may confuse your guests. The bread plate goes on the left of the dinner plate, glasses on the right. Don’t panic if you aren’t sure about the proper place setting for each meal. Vujinovic says you can find “cheat sheets” or place setting guides for various meals on the company’s website, replacements.com, under the site’s “neat things” tab. * Tips for hosts and guests Remember, the host/hostess always sits last. That person will let you know when it’s OK to begin eating. They may offer a blessing or statement or perhaps start by passing a dish. Always pass food around the table counter clockwise to your right and refrain from serving yourself first. Pass the salt and pepper as a set, even if you’re only asked for one. If you’re not sure which utensil
to use with each course, start on the outside and work in toward the dinner plate. Don’t cut more than one or two bites of food at a time, and never butter an entire roll or piece of bread. Instead, pinch off pieces small enough for one or two bites and butter those first. If you need to excuse yourself temporarily, place your napkin on your chair to indicate you will be coming back. Signify you’re finished with the meal by placing your napkin to the left of the dinner plate, and your fork and knife side by side diagonally across your plate with the sharp side of the knife blade facing inward and the fork tines up. Turn your cellphone on vibrate or don’t even bring it to the table. Enjoy the company of those around you. And what if you commit a major holiday fumble by accidently breaking a piece of the host’s dinnerware? “You should certainly offer to replace the broken piece, especially if it has sentimental value for the host or hostess. If you don’t know the name of the pattern or the manufacturer, Replacements offers a free pattern identification service that is a valuable resource,” says Vujinovic. -BPT
FIVE FUN AND AFFORDABLE FALL ACTIVITIES YOUR FAMILY WILL LOVE Crisp air, changing leaves and cozy knit sweaters signify the return of autumn. Fall can be a busy time for most families, juggling back-to-school routines, carpools, homework, after school events and sports practice. Now is a great time to slow down, bring the whole family together and enjoy all of the exciting activities fall has to offer. Here are a few fun ways to spend quality time with your family and relish in fall to the fullest: 1. Visit an apple orchard. This is a great way to make the most of the beautiful fall weather and do something active with the family. Use apples to make apple sauce, a tasty tart or just slice them up for a great on-the-go snack. Try unique apple varieties you’ve never tried they all taste a bit different! Pack a picnic for the orchard and include Marzetti Caramel Dip Snack Packs to dip the apples you pick. The dips are an easy and fun way to treat your family to the flavors of fall. And with varieties like Old Fashioned and Fat Free, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. 2. Go for a nature walk. With the vibrant, colorful leaves and the cool, crisp air, autumn is a great time to get your family outdoors and learn more about nature in a local
nature preserve or state park. Pick up a few fall mementos along the way to integrate into crafts. For example, bring home some colorful leaves and decoupage them onto the outside of a mason jar to create a seasonal fall candle holder, or create a lively fallinspired canvas incorporating several different leaf shapes and colors. 3. Gear up for Holidays Host a Fall themed get-together by incorporating fun foods the kids can help prepare and will love to eat! Use a pumpkin-shaped cookie cutter to create cut-out cookies and involve the kids in decorating - with everything from sprinkles to frosting. Or, for a quick and easy themed treat, try making marshmallow lollipops drizzled with chocolate or caramel dip, then use chopped nuts or candy bits to make ghoulish faces.4. Visit a local farmers market. Fall offers a whole new repertoire of amazing fresh fruits and vegetables. Encourage your kids to try new items like figs, acorn squash or cauliflower. If they find samples that they enjoy, purchase a few and find a way to incorporate them into your next meal. You can also buy items such as tomatoes and pickle peppers in bulk, and then can at the end of season to store for the long winter ahead. 5. Have a bonfire.
As the weather cools down, bonfires are a great way to stay warm at night and make lasting family memories. Gather everyone together and reconnect by huddling around the fire in cozy blankets. Pour mugs of warm apple cider and munch on Nutty Caramel Popcorn while swapping ghost stories over the glow of the fire. Nutty Caramel Popcorn Ingredients: 1/2 cup Marzetti Old Fashioned Caramel Dip 2 tablespoons butter 8 cups popped microwave plain popcorn 1/2 cup peanuts Directions: Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
Spray a 13-by-9-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set it aside. Melt butter in small saucepan. Stir in dip; simmer over low heat five minutes, stirring frequently. You can even substitute other Marzetti dip flavors, like Peanut Butter Caramel or Sweet and Salty Caramel, for a tasty twist. Pour mixture over popcorn and peanuts in prepared dish. Stir until evenly coated. Bake 30 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes. Cool completely in dish on wire rack, about 45 minutes. For more family-friendly fall food inspiration and to find information about other tasty recipes, visit Marzetti Kitchens.

W FAMILY FEATURES
hen you’re entertaining a small group, it’s fairly easy to ensure everyone enjoys the party. However, a larger group or an eclectic crowd with varied interests can make it harder to be an effective hostess. Planning party zones that cater to specific interests is one savvy solution to this dilemma. Designating areas of your home for various interests will let guests choose their own party pleasure and take some of the pressure off of making sure everyone has a good time. Your party theme and the occasion may help determine the zones most appropriate for your event, or you can get started with your party zone planning using some of these popular ideas. Game zone. There’s nothing like a little friendly competition to get guests mingling and letting loose. Offer a selection of team-oriented board games for groups of four or more, keeping the focus on lively, interactive games that get guests moving and talking as they act out, draw or brainstorm aloud. Let guests square off as they compete for bragging rights, or spice things up a little and up the ante by offering prizes for the winning teams. Conversation zone. Catching up with loved ones is among the best parts of a party, so be sure to create cozy and engaging seating areas where small groups can gather to chat. Try to limit background noise in this zone so participants aren’t fighting to hear the conversation. If space allows, scatter a few of these zones throughout the party so groups can gather where they feel most comfortable. Snack and sips zone. Make it easy for guests to indulge in the food and drinks you’ve prepared, and manage post-party cleanup, by creating designated areas for noshing. If you have an island, add a few barstools, and place extra chairs around the table so no one is left balancing a plate on their lap. Although the kitchen is the natural choice, don’t overlook other areas where you may be able to set up temporary tables and chairs to make it easy for guests to partake in all the food and fun. Quiet zone. Every party needs a quiet spot away from the chaos where guests can retreat and recharge. Offer a comfortable seat and soothing lighting in a part of the house where distractions will be minimal. Take your guests’ needs into consideration; you can offer added privacy with a door hanger that lets others know the space is in use to discourage interruptions. 4 Steps for Easy Entertaining
H
osting a large group of family and friends can be overwhelming, especially if entertaining isn’t something you do often. No matter the occasion, these tips can help you avoid common party pitfalls so you can keep the focus on having fun.
Stock the cart with an ice bucket and tongs; garnish such as lemons, limes, olives and cherries; and an assortment of glasses. Offer a couple of bottled beers on ice, at least one white and one red wine, and a couple of liquors that work with a wide array of mixers, such as vodka and rum.
Offer an assortment. Rather than attempting to plan the menu around a wide range of likes, dislikes, allergies and other considerations, create a menu that satisfies everyone’s cravings with a mix of hot and cold dishes in a variety of tastes and textures.
Never compromise on wine. Lots of times, guests have wildly different tastes in wine and it can seem impossible to select a couple bottles that everyone will like. If you want to please everyone but worry you’ll end up with a stash of partially poured bottles, there is an alternative to pulling all those corks. The Coravin Wine System lets you serve wine without removing the cork, allowing your guests to pour as much or as little wine as they like (you can save
Create a beverage cart. The kitchen is likely to be a hotbed of activity, but setting up a remote beverage cart can help redirect some of that traffic.
the rest or what’s left for another day). Using a Coravin System is like having a wine bar in your house. Rather than settling for what is open, everyone can drink whatever they like, even if the entire group has dramatically different tastes. If someone wants to taste lots of different wines, they will have the freedom to do just that. Learn more at coravin.com. Plan ahead for refills. Clear as much space as possible in the refrigerator for extras so you can easily replenish anything that runs out. Make extra pitchers of punch, and have bowls of popular items ready to replace as needed. For warm items, use the warming feature on your oven to hold dishes at serving temperatures, or simply leave the oven off and contain the precooked dishes’ warmth.

Bjorn Ikast and Classini are Iconic in the $25,000 1.45m Markel Insurance Jumper Classic Photos by Captured Moment Photography July 19, 2018 - Del Mar, CA - The $25,000 Markel Insurance 1.45m Jumper Classic kept spectators on the edge of their seats as they watched Bjorn Ikast ride to the win on Classini (owned by BBB Show Jumpers, LLC). The course, designed by Anthony D’Ambrosio, included a tight time allowed which narrowed down the field from 32 in the first round to only five riders in the jump-off. In the Blenheim U25 Jumper Classic, which ran concurrently with the grand prix, Hannah Loly took home first place aboard Asombro. With Jaime Azcarraga and For Fashion double clean and fast in the jump-off, Ikast originally planned to just focus on having a clean round. But with his wife’s encouragement, he decided to go for the win which resulted in a time of 40.22 seconds, almost a full second faster than Azcarraga’s 41.19s. “We walked the course and I thought it was a really good jump-off for my horse, I just didn’t think I could beat Jaime [Azcarraga] because he was fast,” Ikast admitted. “And my wife shouted to me, ‘No way, you have to go for it, because you can be faster...’” 2018 has been a great year for the up and coming Classini, a nineyear-old Holsteiner, as this Markel Insurance Jumper Classic is his third big win. Ikast is thrilled about the horse. “I’ve had him for three years and started off in small divisions and now in the grand prix. He jumped absolutely spectacular so I’m really, really happy,” Ikast said. “I’m happy and the owners must be very happy also!” If on the list of top 25 riders that qualify for the Markel Insurance 1.45m Series Final at The Las Vegas National
Bjorn Ikast and Classini with (l-r) Josh Mullins, Melissa Brandes and Brandon Seger CSI4*-W this year, Ikast replied, “Of course I’m going to Vegas! You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may visit the Internet Web site address listed below for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case file number. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
