A New Queen Ms southern California cities 2018
By: Eulynn Gargano Palm trees and a cool ocean breeze. Last Sunday evening, 34 year old Trabuco Canyon native, Eulynn Gargano, took home the title of Ms. Southern California Cities 2018. While this prestigious pageant has been around since the 1950s, this is the first year it added the Ms category. As the crown was placed on Gargano’s head as the inaugural Ms. Southern California Cities, she gracefully accepted applause and cheers from the audience and judges. Gargano, a single mom, business owner and community volunteer, is honored to hold this distinguished title and looks forward to the impact she can have on the individuals and communities within Southern California during her reign. The Southern California Cities pageant is truly focused on the ways in which its contestants choose to volunteer their time in the community. Gargano’s platform, Living With Purpose: Define Your Legacy, truly captures her heart for the community. Already active with the Junior League of Orange County, State Public Affairs Committee, Orangewood Foundation, Samueli Academy, and the Community Action Team, she looks for every opportunity to utilize her talents to ease the paths of others. Living WIth Purpose is all about filling people with hope and meaning through service. Defining Your Legacy is geared toward the new lives people can lead after overcoming their disadvantages. Just as she did, Gargano wants everyone to know that his or her Legacy is still being defined. She hopes to connect people to the resources they need to improve their own lives, their communities and the planet. Your holiday shopping guide: 4 ways to cut through the clutter this holiday season It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but for you and your family, it’s also the busiest. The holidays bring trips to book, parties to plan, meals to cook, homes to clean and of course, work and school schedules to manage. On top of that, you have to tackle perhaps the most daunting task of all - the holiday shopping list. Can it be done? Of course it can! But you can make it a little easier with these four tips guaranteed to cut through the clutter and streamline holiday shopping. * Make your list and check it twice. Along with making a holiday budget, create a detailed list of everyone you need to buy for. Include specific sizes and the dollar amount you plan to spend on each person to save you time when you hit the store. You can also save your list to your phone for easy access right at your fingertips. * Stock up and spread cheer this year. Make sure to stock up on a few generic, gender-neutral gifts to have on hand during the holidays should you receive an unexpected gift from your next-door neighbor or mailman. This way, you will be prepared to spread the joy of gifting no matter who shares it first! * Decide which deals belong on the naughty and nice list. Use your smartphone or other mobile device to research a store’s holiday deals ahead of time. For example, for a limited time
Net10 Wireless is offering at Best Buy a free ZTE Unico smartphone and three months of unlimited talk, text and data up to 3 GB at 4G LTE speeds - all for $99 with in-store activation! (after reaching high speed data allocation service continues at 2G speed). A gift worth staying off the naughty list for! * Make sure the gifts under your tree are price match guarantee. Most stores offer price match guarantees throughout the year, but especially during the holiday season. Hold on to your receipts and keep an eye out for new ads and sales as the holidays get
closer. Price matching could be your ticket to further holiday savings. To learn more about additional wireless service options from Net10 Wireless, visit Net10Wireless.com. After reaching high speed data allocation, your service continues at 2G speed. 4G/4G LTE networks are not available in all locations. Actual speed may also be limited by capability of device. LTE is a trademark of ETSI. Please refer to the latest Terms and Conditions of Service at NET10Wireless.com. - (BPT)

CUB SCOUTS,BOY SCOUTS and elks JOIN FORCES IN FLAG FOLDING ASSIGNMENT
The Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks called upon the Boy Scouts of Troop #603 and Cub Scouts of Pack #601 to help in folding the hundreds of service worn flags collected from households in the Saddleback Valley. The youth groups are both sponsored by the local Lodge. The flags are to be retired on Nov 12th in the Elks solemn ritual Flag Retirement ceremony. The event takes place each year in November, when
officers and members representing the ten Elks lodges of the Orange Coast District meet in a respectful ceremony to pay one last honor to the service worn Flags before they are taken away and properly incinerated. Thousands of service worn Flags of our country, ready to be retired were collected by Elks Lodges throughout the year. The Boy Scouts under the direction of Scoutmaster Frank Perez and Cubmaster Christopher Lovelace
gladly accepted the assignment saying. “Both of our youth groups will consider it an honor to see that the flags are all properly folded.” The Flags will then be ready to be displayed one last time on long tables during the ceremony which will be held at the Fullerton Elks Lodge on Sunday November 12th. There will be a dinner at 6pm and the ceremony at 7pm. The event is open to the public. The Mission Viejo/Saddleback

Harvesters raised Over $1 Million To Fight Hunger In Orange County Jennifer Segerstrom, Nicole Suydam, and Kathryn Cenci For the 25th year, the Harvesters dazzled 450 attendees at its Annual Harvesters Fashion Show and Luncheon, bringing the community together en force to work toward ending hunger in Orange County. To support the Harvesters’ efforts, South Coast Plaza presented curated highlights from its retailers’ fall/winter designer and luxury collections in a highly anticipated, sold-out fashion show at The Pavillon at South Coast Plaza. The fashion show and luncheon netted over $1 million and provided over 3 million meals for Irvine-based Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, which will go directly to feed hungry children, working families and seniors in the community. The runway presentation showcased coveted brands such as Fendi, Lanvin, Marni, Max Mara, Moncler, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Roberto Cavalli, Salvatore Ferragamo, The Webster, Valentino and Versace. Luncheon guests and Harvesters members sipped champagne at the reception, sponsored by City National Bank and Veuve Clicquot, as they perused luxurious and unique silent auction items, including two tickets to the Roberto Cavalli show at Milan Fashion Week in Italy including hotel accommodations, a Deer Valley Mountain Estate Home for four nights with ski lift tickets, a Moet Hennessey Champagne Experience for 16, and private access for a Mia Van Berg with Harvesters co-founder Jennifer Van Berg, Harvesters four hour skate session for 15 riders at the Volcom Team Skatepark Facility. cofounder Jill Johnson Tucker, and Laney Tucker Three luxury items from South Coast Plaza and its retailers and restaurants also set the stage for an opportunity drawing: By The Way Handbag from Fendi, South Coast Plaza (a $1,800 value); Mikimoto Fusion Necklace from Mikimoto, South Coast Plaza (a $7,040 value); and a fashion experience at South Coast Plaza including a $2,500 gift certificate to shop and a $400 gift certificate to Water Grill South Coast Plaza (a $2,900 value). Guests were then captivated by a runway show featuring 12 of the shopping destination’s European and American luxury and designer brands. The season’s trends curated by South Coast Plaza included brocades, florals, ruffles and pleats, satin, velvet, thigh-high boots, bright colors and lots of leather. A luncheon immediately followed the runway show catered by Water Grill South Coast Plaza, with a menu featuring a roasted beet salad and wild Chilean sea bass. Dessert included a trio of chocolate pot de creme, lemon meringue tart and chocolate chip cookies. The luncheon decor was beautifully executed by Costa Mesa-based White Lilac. At the luncheon, guests also had the opportunity to support Second Harvest Food Bank directly through the Fund-A-Meal campaign, with each dollar donated providing three meals for the food bank. All Fashion Show & Luncheon guests took home a $100 gift card to Saks Fifth Avenue. Underwriters at varying levels took home gifts from Christian Louboutin. In addition, all attendees took home The Webster Model wearing Roberto Cavalli a chic gold limited-edition South Coast Plaza 50th Anniversary backpack. The event concluded with the ever-popular Harvesters after-party held at AnQi by House of AN, where guests enjoyed food and beverages, and a DJ. Elizabeth An, the restaurant’s CEO, personally greeted the Harvesters and supporters – a true testament to the community coming together to help raise money for Second Harvest Food Bank. AnQi also generously donated a percentage of food and beverage sales to Second Harvest Food Bank. The Harvesters host their annual runway presentation and luncheon fundraiser to support Second Harvest Food Bank. One hundred percent of the proceeds benefit the organization, whose mission is to end hunger in Orange County. Since its founding in 1983, Second Harvest Food Bank has distributed more than 418 million pounds of donated, surplus, and fresh grown food to local charities – the equivalent of 348 million meals – and helps feed more than 250,000 individuals every month. Hunger affects our county’s most vulnerable populations, including seniors, children, the working poor, and the homeless. Despite living in one of the most affluent areas of the nation, one in six Orange County children is at risk of going hungry and more than 315,000 people don’t know where their next meal is coming from. 4 Techy Tips For The Ultimate Fall Camping Experience
Camping is a getaway, a break from the chaos and a chance to be in nature for that fresh fall air. For some, camping means getting back to the basics to recharge. But camping doesn’t always mean you need to sacrifice technology. In fact, your smartphone can be one of your biggest assets. To help you get the most out of your fall camping trip, here are four hacks to help you become one with nature while staying connected. Map it out. Smartphones can help you map your route before you even pack your bags. GPS apps create hiking routes and will even sync and save the best ones for future trips. Many apps even allow for adding points of interest along the way. Worried you may lose connection when you hit the trails? Net10 Wireless customers get nationwide coverage on America’s best networks - without any contract or mystery fees, and with savings up to 25 percent* over current plans. No wonder it’s been dubbed the “no worries network.” Look to the stars. Clear nights on the campground can be a great opportunity to grab a blanket near
the fire and stargaze. Now you’re able to have the knowledge of the entire galaxy at your fingertips. Many apps allow you to view constellations and even planets using augmented reality by holding your phone up to the sky. Go beyond the classics such as the Big and Little Dippers, and learn a bit of history behind new constellations along the way. Liven up the kumbaya. Spice up the trip with the latest tunes. Have your favorite playlist on hand for your trip from start to finish. Many music streaming apps even have created playlists specifically for camping, road tripping and hiking. Bonus tip: Still want more entertainment? Bring along a smartphone projector and play a movie on the back of your tent, under the stars. You’ll be the hit of the campsite. Be prepared with the “no worries network.” Sometimes the unexpected can happen in the wilderness. Be sure to have your phone on hand in case you need to check weather reports or contact a park ranger. For only $40 a month, Net10 Wireless’ no contract cell service makes this easy. You’ll get nationwide coverage on one of America’s top four networks
and the first 3 GB of data at high speeds, then 2G**, making it easy to stay in touch with friends and family throughout your trip. Plus, you can make the switch while keeping your current phone and number with the Net10 Wireless Bring Your Own Phone program. Get outside and explore this fall. Visit www.Net10Wireless.com for more ways to save! *The savings claim is based on a comparison of NET10’s $35 and $50 smartphone service plans and two of the leading service carriers’
monthly online prices for comparable individual postpaid no contract smartphone service plans, including overage charges. 5 secrets to building the best media room
There was a time when only a few could afford a large screen television. The resolution was clunky, the sound poor and the cost high. But over the past decade, technology has advanced so remarkably fast that today a 60-inch television with unbelievably crisp resolution is within many people’s budget. Add to this the fact that tickets for movie theaters are more expensive than ever, and it makes sense why more people are building a home theater in their house. With some planning and amazing electronic toys, it’s possible to create a media room that delivers theater-quality sound and visuals. And you can enjoy it in more comfortable seats and without obnoxious strangers interrupting the show. But 4K televisions, surround-sound speakers and bass cannons are only part of the overall experience. To compliment these electronics features, you need the right setting to amplify the experience. This means taking the time to design a proper media room that enables your equipment. These five indispensable tips will help you do just that. Page 24
1. A great media room begins with the right walls. Incredibly strong, Habito(TM) drywall is able to hold up to 30 pounds on a single screw. This drywall does away with wall mounts and the need to find a stud, allowing you to mount your speakers, television or screen exactly where you want them to go. 2. Paint wisely. While what color you choose for your room will be based off personal preference, aim for earthy, neutral colors that minimize glare. To help draw the focus of the room toward the screen, many paint the wall a burgundy or maroon. 3. Great sound is a result of more than speakers. Designing your room with acoustics in mind is key. Hard surfaces create a sharp, echoing quality to the sound. To avoid this, your media room should be carpeted and instead of hard blinds, use sound dampening curtains to help enhance the sound and keep out the sun. The density of Habito drywall also contributes to reduced sound transmission between rooms, helping to create separation between your media room and the living area of the home.
The Coto de Caza News
4. Think about speakers, walls and storage. Though most people’s attention will be drawn to the wall with the television on it, the surrounding walls are equally important. Here is where you mount speakers for the 360-degree sound effect, sconce lighting and floating shelves for design and storage. To properly achieve this, you need a durable wall, such as Habito drywall, that can both hold the needed weight and is strong enough to make it easy to redesign and remount fixtures as needed. 5. Create lighting to accommodate a variety of moods. A media room is meant to be used in a number of ways. Even when you’re watching a
movie, you’ll probably turn the lights up then down before it’s over. For this reason, be sure to install dimmable lights that can easily be controlled. This way, you can keep it dark for the dramatic scenes, and when the pizza arrives, have just enough light to see your food but not detract from the picture quality. It’s easy to only focus on the big “toys” when building a media room. But the secret to a truly great home-theater experience begins in the construction phase, well before anything is plugged in. Easy season: Fa ll gardening spells success
Scrumptious, healthy veggies, hefty harvests and a break on your grocery bill - many appealing advantages draw people to growing their own vegetables. If you’ve never gardened before or you’re a green thumbed, garden-guru, you’ll soon figure out that fall’s a great time to get growing your own produce. Cooler temperatures and milder sun can spell success for any gardener who takes up the trowel as autumn approaches. Favorable fall conditions mean growing cool weather crops is comparatively easy, with less watering and care needed for a successful garden. Cool crops will start out strong, growing quickly and then slow their growth as days become shorter and cooler. You’ll also need to work less to protect your garden from pests, as both insects and animal populations will taper off in fall. And since weeds will germinate less frequently and grow slower, weeding won’t be a timeconsuming task. Finally, more rain and less sun and heat mean you’ll need to water less. If you’re ready for gardening success, now is the time to grab that hoe, break some ground and get growing. Tips to get you started:
Pick your plants Start with transplants, rather than seed. A shorter, gentler growing season means you need to get started right away. Many local garden centers will have a selection of transplants from producers like Bonnie Plants that will grow well in your geographic region. Transplants will be six weeks old and give you a jump start. You’ll be able to harvest sooner than if you start from seed and skip the volatile, sometimes unsuccessful, seed-starting process. Bonnie’s transplants come in earthfriendly biodegradable pots, making planting easy, preventing transplant shock and sparing the use of much plastic. As the pot biodegrades, it’ll add nutrients to your soil, too. Choose cool crops that your family likes to eat. -Popular fall favorites include: * Lacinato kale -A cold-hardy vegetable, kale leaves sweeten after frost. Kale is a super food, and Lacinato leaves extend excellent health benefits, lowering cholesterol, fighting cancer and decreasing inflammation. * Early dividend broccoli - Many greens love the fall, and broccoli is no exception. Plant stalks 18 inches apart and get ready for an easy,
hearty harvest. Broccoli is high in fiber and calcium. * Cabbage - The quintessential fall vegetable, Bonnie’s hybrid cabbage grows large, round blue-green heads. From salads to stews, cabbage adds a punch of flavor and nutrients like beta-carotene, vitamins C and K, and plenty of fiber. * Romaine lettuce - Romaine packs a big punch with more vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytonutrients than other popular types of lettuce. Rich in fiber, vitamin C and betacarotene, romaine is especially good for heart health. Space transplants 18 inches apart. Once you know what you’ll be planting, it’s time to get the ground ready. Remove any garden debris from the past season’s garden and remove weeds before they go to seed. S i z e u p y o u r s oi l . Loosen compacted soil, fluffing it up with a garden fork. Soil test and amend if necessary. Adding a 2-inch layer of bagged compost is always good practice. You can also spread a balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, according to labeled instructions, for added nutrients. Plants will need an inch of moisture per week, either through rain or
supplemental watering. You might want to consider raised bed planting; beds are easy to build or buy and allow you to start out with good quality soil. Plus, you’ll bend less come harvest time. Position your plot and let the sunshine in.Most vegetables need full sun - at least six hours per day. Finally, don’t fear frost. When frost threatens, cover plants with floating row cover, cold frame or a cloche. Or, you can grow fall veggies in a container and move pots to a protected location on frosty nights. Whether you’re working in the backyard, a raised bed or in containers on a deck, you’ll see how easy and successful fall planting can be. Start now to ensure you enjoy a healthy, plentiful and fulfilling fall harvest. For more tips on fall gardening visit www.bonnieplants. com. - (BPT)

Brownie Cake Cones

FAMILY FEATURES
reating one-of-a-kind desserts doesn’t have to take hours in the kitchen or even exceptional baking skills. With a little imagination and the right tools, you can whip up surprisingly delicious sweets that will surprise and delight your friends and family. Focus on flavor If your baking repertoire typically consists of white cake and chocolate frosting, spice things up a bit by experimenting with new fillings and flavor combinations. Opt for complementary or contrasting tastes for a truly delectable dessert. For example, pair fudgy chocolate cake with tangy berries, or see how a bold flavor like lemon adds a new dimension to a mild vanilla. Add a special touch Infusing new flavors into your favorite cake or brownie recipe is surprisingly easy when you use bakeware made for the purpose. Baker’s Advantage Fillables Bakeware helps home bakers easily create “treat-filled” desserts. Each bakeware set comes with two pans: One pan creates the bottom half of the cake and forms indentations in the cake you can fill with fruit, puddings, candy and more, while the second pan creates the top half of the cake, which hides the surprise fillings. Shape it up Artfully applied frosting and other decorations can instantly dress up a basic cake, but another option is upgrading the shape of the cake itself. In addition to traditional square, round and sheet cake pans, the Baker’s Advantage Fillables Bakeware collection includes mini heart cakes, fluted cakes, mini loaf cakes and a cake cones pan. These special shapes make it easy to create enviable desserts out of classic recipes. Find more surprisingly easy dessert ideas at FillablesbyBakersAdvantage.com.

Lend a Helping Ham A full, delicious menu with sides and snacks Preparing the perfect ham for all of your holiday guests to share can feel like a lot of pressure, but complementing the main dish with sides, snacks and desserts can help take a bite out of that overwhelming feeling. To help fill out your dinner table this holiday season, start with a crowd-pleasing appetizer like Bacon and Cheddar Ranch Dip that can ease everyone into the meal. Serve up a tasty side, such as Balsamic Glazed Roasted Root Vegetables, so that the ham doesn’t stand alone. Then, just as dinner’s grasp wears away, treat your guests to White Chocolate Peppermint Popcorn Bark as a delightful holiday sendoff. The Perfect Piece of Pork To make sure the main course this holiday season – a yummy, juicy ham – is cooked and prepared to perfection, there are some simple steps to follow. Thaw It While ham can be cooked without thawing, for best results the first step to a tasty ham is properly thawing it in either the refrigerator or cold water. Never thaw a ham on the counter, as it can become subject to bacterial growth when the outside warms but the inside remains frozen. Remember: The larger the ham, the longer it needs to thaw before cooking. Bake It Once the ham is properly thawed, start by heating your oven to 325 F and lining a roasting pan with aluminum foil. You’ll want to cook the ham low and slow to avoid drying it out, and lining the pan helps limit the mess. As it bakes, don’t forget to flip it over about halfway through the process. Check It When the ham gets close to being done cooking, take the safe route and check its temperature. The USDA recommends bringing pork to 145 F to help ensure it’s cooked thoroughly. Finish It After pulling the ham from the oven, let it rest 15 minutes before slicing. Because the ham will
Page 28
continue baking outside the oven for a short period, allowing it to rest holds in those delicious juices. If you’re looking for a different way to please your guests’ palates, try glazing it with different mixtures that could include anything from brown sugar to fruit juices. A Dozen Ways to Dip Liven up the party platter by transforming traditional ranch dressing into crowd-pleasing dips, just by adding a few simple ingredients. Litehouse Homestyle Ranch Dressing is a versatile base that can be mixed with anything from sriracha to basil and Parmesan cheese to create dips that pair perfectly with fresh-cut vegetables, crackers, bread and more. Bacon and Cheddar Ranch Dip 1 cup Litehouse Homestyle Ranch Dressing chopped bacon, to taste shredded cheddar cheese, to taste assorted dippers Combine ranch dressing with chopped bacon and shredded cheddar cheese, to taste. Turn Thursdays into together time this holiday season Holiday busyness can occupy your weekends, making it difficult to find time to prepare and share a special meal. Instead, why not commit to making Thursday evenings special throughout the season? Instead of trying to do one more thing on the weekend, organically fit togethertime into Thursdays, and fill the evening with your closest friends, TV shows, board games or other favorite entertainment - and don’t forget your favorite foods! The wholesome holiday fare professionals at Simply Organic offer four simple ideas for turning Thursday night into your favorite time of the week this holiday season: * Make it a movie night. Whether you choose a timeless holiday classic or the hottest new release, an evening of movie watching can break the stress and monotony of the week. You can opt for something kid-friendly and let the kids stay up a little bit later, or put them to bed on time and settle in with more sophisticated viewing fare. Pair the movie with your favorite takeout (instead of popcorn) and a warmth-inspiring seasonal beverage. * Serve a wholesome, organic meal. Invite friends to each bring a dish for an evening potluck. Eating together is a favorite way to share the spirit of the season, and serving organic fare communicates your values and caring. You can find plenty of seasonal recipes that incorporate organic ingredients at
www.simplyorganic.com. * Stage a baking party. You probably planned to do some holiday baking this season, so why not turn it into a fun event? Invite one or two good friends over, and ask them to bring their favorite holiday treat recipe to make. Pool your efforts - and results - to expand your holiday baked goods menu this year. Be sure to get an ingredients list from everyone ahead of time! * Host a holiday appetizer and cocktail dinner. Instead of serving a big meal of foods that everyone’s going to overindulge in this holiday season, an appetizer gathering can be a fun, creative alternative. Whip up holiday appetizers and seasonal cocktails (liquor optional) to capture the spirit of the season. Try these two festive recipes from Simply Organic: Vanilla Clove French 75 Cocktail This French 75 cocktail takes a well-spiced twist with organic vanilla beans, cloves and cinnamon sticks. This recipe makes enough simple syrup for 32 cocktails. Ingredients: 4 Simply Organic Cloves Whole 1 Simply Organic Madagascar Vanilla Beans 3 Simply Organic Cinnamon Sticks 2 cups water 2 cups sugar Rind of 1 orange 6 fluid ounces prosecco, chilled 2 fluid ounces apple brandy
Juice of 1 lemon 2 orange or lemon rind twists Directions: To make the syrup, fill a small pot with water. Bring to medium and slowly add sugar, cloves, vanilla bean, cinnamon sticks and orange rind. Once sugar has dissolved, remove from heat and let steep for 15 minutes, until it is a golden orange color. Strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove cloves and orange rind. Store in an airtight container in the fridge. To make cocktails, divide prosecco into 2 champagne flutes. Split apple brandy and lemon juice between flutes, then add 1/2 fluid ounce simple syrup into each flute. Stir with a long spoon, then serve with orange or lemon rind twist. Butternut Squash Soup Shooters Butternut squash soup turns shooter in this recipe featuring organic squash and curry powder. Ingredients: 2 teaspoons Simply Organic Curry Powder Simply Organic Crushed Red Pepper 1 tablespoon butter or olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped (about 1 cup) 4 celery stalks, chopped (about 1 cup) 3 garlic cloves, crushed and chopped 1 3-pound butternut squash, peeled and cubed (about 5 cups)
1 teaspoon salt 5 cups vegetable broth (or a water and broth combo, if desired) 1 cup canned coconut milk fresh cilantro, for garnish cooked chickpeas, for garnish Directions: In a large stock pot, over medium heat, melt the butter or heat the oil. Add the onion and celery. Cook for four to five minutes, until the onions are translucent and the vegetables “sweat.” Stirring frequently, add the garlic and cook for one minute, until fragrant. Add the butternut squash, salt and curry powder. Stir. Add the vegetable broth and bring to a boil. Then reduce to a simmer and allow to cook for 25 to 30 minutes, until the butternut cubes are soft when pierced with a fork. Into the soup, stir coconut milk, then remove the soup from the heat. Using an immersion blender, blend the soup until smooth and creamy. Serve in shot glasses with a garnish of cilantro, chickpeas and red pepper flakes. Fall entertaining forecast: cozy, comfortable and outdoors Whether an afternoon tailgating before the big game or a fun-filled evening under the dazzling autumn stars, the forecast for this season’s entertaining is trending toward cozy, comfortable and outdoors. “I think the big lifestyle shift right now is toward eating out less and entertaining more at home, and autumn is the perfect season for taking your get-togethers outside,” says Keith Winkler, marketing manager for dinnerware giant Replacements, Ltd. “Think about it - the temperatures are cooling down following our record breaking summer heat. You can have more people at outdoor gatherings than you can generally fit in your
home. Plus, there’s more flexibility because you can easily have one or more set ups, whether that means setting up tables for dinner or having canapés and finger foods around a fire pit.” Fall is a great season for ditching the paper and plastic and taking your dinnerware outdoors. Tableware industry experts say there are many positives to introducing your “good stuff” to Mother Nature. It won’t blow away like paper plates, and it’s far more environmentally friendly than Styrofoam. Mix it up While serving finger foods on small plates is extremely popular and encourages your guests to mingle, there’s a definite return toward the comfort and connection of a sit down meal. To set the perfect fall table, designers encourage mixing and matching patterns to reflect your distinctive style. “I generally start with a pattern that sets the tone for the evening, one that reflects what I’m feeling for this particular gathering,” says Replacements’ designer Julie Robbins. “Whether that’s a cute salad plate that’s going to sit atop the dinner plate, or a fun color I want as my main design element or theme. I then add pieces that either draw out that feeling or ground the place setting to give me the ambiance I want for my
entire table.” Robbins says that may mean pairing a current fall favorite, such as a dinner plate in Woodland by Spode, with vintage American amber glass from the 1940s. She also mixes different pieces. For example, adding a hued glass accent salad plate creates another layer of dimension, while a bright goblet can infuse a much needed pop of seasonal color. Light up your evenings There’s really no need to go heavy on the decorations for fall outdoor entertaining. Bright leaves, pumpkins, seasonal berries and other naturals create the perfect autumn décor. Experts say you don’t need a floral centerpiece if you have nature all around you. Instead, use candles to light up your evenings. “It’s time to upgrade from the Mason
jar look by mixing glassware and candles,” says Robbins. “Lighting can truly set the mood for your gathering, which is why I’m big on creating an eclectic grouping down the middle of my table by mixing glass and metal candlesticks with hurricanes, clear decanters and other pieces I can use to hold candles. If you don’t think you have enough pieces, old tumblers make great votive cups, while you can also turn wine glasses and goblets upside down and place candles on the inverted base. This is beautiful for daytime entertaining, and when lit, creates a simple, warm feeling on those nights when you’re just starting to feel a nip in the air.” Looking for more fall inspiration? Spread joy with a simple home-cooked meal
As the nights lengthen and temperatures drop, it’s a time to embrace all the simple and cozy pleasures the season has to offer: Tailgating parties, fuzzy socks, hanging strings of lights to bring ambiance to those early evenings. Of course, the season can also bring on some serious cravings for warm and comforting fare, like warm drinks, stews and chilis and spiced baked apple desserts. In fact, now is the perfect time to increase your contentment and spread the joy by preparing and sharing some homemade food. With these tips, you’ll have the perfect recipe for making you and others around you glow with that particular inner warmth that only the season’s simple pleasures can bring. Fire up the oven: Staying in is always the perfect excuse to create a comforting meal from scratch, especially when it fills your house with warmth and good scents. It could be a batch of almond scones, a chicken pot pie with extra rosemary or a homemade pizza with a robust basil garlic sauce. For the most delicious results, always start with high-quality, wholesome ingredients that make you feel good about what you’re making. For example, high-quality seasonings and extracts, such as those from the Simply Organic line, will infuse your dishes with pure and delicious flavors. Share the joy: Whatever you’re cooking, be sure and make extras, because connecting with others Page 30
is especially important this time of year. Prepare a meal and invite some friends over for an evening of feasting and conversation, Or use your cooking to uplift someone who could really use a friendly gesture. Perhaps there’s an elderly neighbor who can’t get out much in the winter, or a friend or colleague with a touch of the blues. A shared homemade meal can be a source of comfort and bring contentment to a dark winter evening. Then, post your experiences and photos of your meal on social media with the hashtag #CookForAChange. All aglow: However you share the meal, be sure and go with warm, intimate lighting. Place lit candles around the room, hang a string of lights or do both. Either way, the soft glow will make everyone want to linger a little longer over the dinner table, savoring the warmth that comes from the cozy atmosphere, delicious food and fellowship. Take time for reflection: In the end, your effort and the happiness it creates can make you feel a deeper appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. Think about how the timehonored practice of sharing your home, your time and a homemade meal transforms how you feel about the season. Then, inspire others with your stories and photos on social media with the hashtag #CookForAChange. For more information about the campaign, visit www.cookforachange. com. - (BPT)
