S i m p l e w a y s t o g i v e b a c k a l l y e a r l o n g The old saying, “It is better to Ruth Campbell Bigelow after the

give than receive,” is never better illustrated than during the holiday season when gift giving is at its peak. But, how often does the purpose of giving get lost in the rush of shopping and deadlines? It’s easy to forget that there are many ways to give that don’t have to rely on a purchase. Just showing someone that they are appreciated can be the most memorable gift of the season. In many ways, it is the gift that keeps on giving. Being appreciated can make a person feel fabulous and in fact can motivate someone to pay it forward. In a time when discourse seems to permeate so many areas of our lives, a small note of appreciation can stand out even more. At Bigelow Tea, where the company mission is to enrich life’s everyday moments, the culture is to remember all who make our lives so much better and show them appreciation. “We try to pay attention all year long, not just during the holidays. The purpose of our company is to create an environment of pride that brings out everyone’s desire and ability to make a positive difference every day,” says Cindi Bigelow, CEO and thirdgeneration family member. Bigelow Tea was started by

Depression hit. Perhaps it was her brush with the hard times of the Depression that heightened her compassion for others, but her generous spirit built appreciation into the formula for the company’s future. In 1963, she adopted a school in Kentucky, where she sent truckloads of books, coats and shoes. She would even buy glasses for kids who needed them so they could read. Today, Bigelow continues to carry on that tradition with the company’s support of the USO and veteran’s programs like Ride 2 Recovery, Tea for the Troops and the annual Bigelow Tea Community Challenge, which has contributed $1.5 million back into the community. There are many simple ways to give back all year long - whether as a parent, a sibling, a corporate executive or a partner. Some of the insights Cindi has learned as a parent and the third-generation business leader include: * A “good” education should make sure it’s teaching young people about values like kindness, niceness and compassion - things that our parents and grandparents practiced so naturally, but are often overlooked today. * Her father’s simple philosophy,

as relevant today as yesterday, is to be an inspiration, be honest, be fair, be concerned about others and remember that success has many different definitions. * It’s important to take the extra time for two-way communication. Listening (maybe over a cup of tea) to what others have to say is a good way to make people feel valued and appreciated.

* Always remember that you are a role model that sets the standards for life all around you. What you do, how you act, good times and bad, behind closed doors, in front of other people, sets the tone and inspires others. Top tips for selecting unique decor gifts for everyone on your list As you strive for a happy holiday, do all your gift ideas seem ho-hum at best? It’s a common holiday conundrum: You want to show all your friends and family that you care, but finding the right present seems impossible. If you feel stuck, look for gifts that will enhance the home, because there is truly something for every personality. Skip the candle and coaster set and instead check out these unique, personal items that add fun and flair to any home, big or small. Aquariums: Traditional rectangular aquariums are bulky and cumbersome, but now there are stunning new tabletop options perfect for everyone on your list. The biOrb TUBE 15 aquarium is designed to give a 360-degree view and features multi-color LED lighting with remote control for an eye-catching way to enjoy fishkeeping. The TUBE 15 is also a low-maintenance gift given its 5-step filtration that maintains a clean, healthy aquatic environment to achieve ideal pH balance. Enjoy the dazzling sight of bubbling water and an impressive light show all year long. Decorative pillows and throws: Winter is the perfect time to cozy up at home, but that tattered old blanket just won’t do. You can encourage friends and family to get some muchneeded R&R by gifting them new pillows and a fluffy throw blanket. Fun pillows are available in unique designs that feature different pictures, words or phrases, so it’s easy to find something just right for that someone special. Add a coordinating throw blanket and get ready to cuddle through all of winter’s chilliest nights.

Restored photographs: Going for tears of joy? One home decor gift that will tug at the heartstrings is framed photography. A nice portrait is always a great gift option, but this year surprise your loved ones by finding old photography and getting it restored. That photo of Grandpa fishing or of all your aunts as children is sure to bring back memories. Place in a nice frame and it is guaranteed to be an unforgettable gift that will be proudly displayed for years to come. Personalized signs: One of the year’s most popular decorating trends is custom signage. Often made from wood, these signs are painted or carved with your preferred message. That means it can be customized to suit even the most difficult people to shop for. Popular verbiage on a custom sign includes the family surname with an “established” date. You could also include a literary phrase or personal mantra that your loved one enjoys. Because the message is personalized, you can make it perfect for everyone on your

list. Himalayan salt lamps: When the holiday festivities are over, it’s time to settle in and deal with Old Man Winter until springtime arrives. The soft glow of salt lamps brings a warmth to rooms on the dreariest days. Made from large pieces of salt, these lamps have an almost rock-like quality with veins of white, pink and peach throughout. Some people claim they also help maintain good indoor air quality and help with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). No matter what, they are a happy addition to any room: bedroom, office or living room. The person who has everything? Check. The hard-to-shop-for teen? Check. The newlywed couple settling into their home? Check. Home decor gifts are great for everyone on your holiday gift list, and best yet, they won’t be like anything else your loved ones receive, making your gift memorable and truly cherished. - (BPT)

Three Simple Ways to Create A Legacy of Gratitude for your Children By: Eulynn Gargano As a mom of three elementary age children, I find myself frequently surrounded by the sounds of Christmas. No, I’m not talking about the tiny jingle of bells or the sweet sounds of carolers, I’m referring to those “I want,” “Santa better bring me ...” and “Why can’t I have?” moments. My platform, as Ms. Southern California, is Living with Purpose: Define your Legacy. I hope these three simple tips will help you Create a Legacy of Gratitude for your family. For more ways to develop your Legacy, follow me at fb.me/mssoutherncalifornia. Number 1: Focus on Experiences, Not Things Children spend the holiday season bombarded with the question “What do you want?” I encourage you to surround your children with the spirit of “What do you want ... to do?” By giving your family the gift of your time and presence, you imbue an organic optimism for life, which leads to a perspective of gratitude, even for the youngest children. One way I strive for this during the season, is to always have toys and books to

donate in the car. Whenever we are on our way to an event, we stop by a donation center for the Salvation Army, Goodwill, or CHOC and make sure we say a prayer of gratitude before proceeding with our gifted lives. Number 2: Introduce Children to Public Servants Our family attended the Holiday Open Houses for both Senator Moorlach and Bates this week. I was shocked to see that my three children were the only youth in attendance. It makes a huge impact for children to meet adults who have dedicated their lives to public service. They shook hands and spoke about their wishes and dreams to local mayors, the police force, District Attorney Rackauckas and even the Senators themselves. Be sure to spend some time working with your children on appropriate introductions and prep them to share something about themselves. The path to public service often begins young! This exposure can truly inspire a sense of gratitude in your children for what they have been giving and what they can give. Number 3: Volunteer as a Family

Ms. Southern California, Eulynn Gargano, volunteers at the Laurel House for teens in crisis, with her family I get it: volunteering with children is you are volunteering with so they not ever easy and it can certainly be know you’ll be bringing little helpers. work for the parents. However, the It’s also a great idea to carry snacks long term benefits of increased self- and to set reasonable expectations esteem, deeper relationships and for your children before an event increased empathy or worth every begins. Coto village HOLIDAY DECORATIONS WINNERS ANNOUNCED

TRADITIONAL SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS-Winner 31851 Via Pato The Village Holiday Lighting Contest gets more challenging every year and this year has proven to be quite daunting for the volunteer homeowners tasked with the judging. With three categories chosen as broad parameters to guide them, our intrepid judges set forth to visit each and every Village street in the dark of the night this weekend. Homes were judged based on the following three categories, with each winner awarded $100; Elegance of Design Traditional Spirit of Christmas Full Griswold Family Style We sought homes that best exhibited an Elegance of Design in their use of color or perhaps by thorough sequenced lighting used in an eye-popping way. The judges were tasked with finding that outstanding example of a Traditional Spirit of Christmas that would necessarily include a religious theme or a Santa Claus and his friends; elves, reindeer, snowmen and the like. Finally, the judges were looking for the homeowner channeling their best Griswold Family interpretation; who put up such a plethora of holiday

Santa helps mission viejo elks host several holiday events By Andy Costello The Elks Lodge was once again full of the holiday spirit as the members played host to 150 developmentally challenged men and women from the Saddleback Valley community. The special guest ranged in age from sixteen to sixty-six. They entered the Lodge in groups - some walked, some used walkers and many came in wheel chairs. After a lunch of chicken tenders, chips, cookies and lemonade were served, D.J. entertainer Doug Houston kept the music flowing much to the delight of the merrymakers who sang and danced all afternoon, some danced with the Elk volunteers who joined in the fun. The Laguna Woods “Clown Alley” clowns were again on hand in full regalia passing out balloon hats and bringing smiles to the faces of the partygoers. And then came the moment the special guests anxiously anticipated. Santa arrived on a big red fire engine and each guest enjoyed a personal visit with Santa (Ed Mackey) & Mrs. Clause (Elk Pam Mackey) receiving a bag full of gifts and a photo with Santa. Elk event organizer Sandy Bergen said, “It was a combined effort of many dedicated members working together to make the event so successful.” Bergen offered a special thanks to the Elks Bingo Charity committee for their ongoing sponsorship, and added, “Some of these special guests have been attending this party for 25 years and look forward to returning each year. Santa arrives in fashion whatever it takes to give them a fun day at the Lodge.” While one full complement of Elks kept busy at the Lodge party, another group of Elk volunteers traveled south to Camp Pendleton to host a dinner for Marine families. Over 200 dinners were served. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) has a long standing support structure for the military and for the developmentally challenged. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks has a 149 year history of giving. “Elks Care, Elks Share.”

8 gifts to enjoy all year long barware, North Drinkware’s glasses on giving.

With the holiday season in full swing, many people are heading to a local department store, or their favorite website, to tick off their holiday shopping lists. While some gifts are fun for the instant gratification they provide, it is nice to give goods that can be enjoyed for months, and years, to come. If you’re looking to impress this year, here are eight gift ideas your loved ones will be able to enjoy all year long. Whole-home connectivity: Do you have a friend who is always complaining about their home internet? Tired of playing tech support for your family? Check out the eero Home WiFi System. Eero replaces your router with a series of sleeklooking devices that ensure every room has fast and reliable WiFi. The eero system is easy to set up and will keep your household connected all year long. Plus, it’s a great gift to ensure all those shiny new gadgets from gaming consoles to smartphones to Apple TVs - function properly throughout the home. You may want to pick up a system for yourself, while you’re at it. A reason to say cheers: For anyone who enjoys unique kitchen items or

make a great gift. Their naturethemed tumblers and pint glasses are hand blown in the U.S., and the base of each glass has the imprint of an iconic U.S. mountain. The glasses are made with care, each requiring 30 steps and two days to produce. It’s almost like drinking out of a piece of art. Printable memories: The popular ‘70s point-shoot-and-print camera trend is back. But instead of lugging around a brick of a camera, companies like Fujifilm have reimagined the original Polaroid. Check out the Instax Mini 70. It’s lightweight and comes in a variety of colors to match any personality. It’s a fun gift for people of all ages who want to capture real-time moments, all year long. Charging on-the-go: For that friend who struggles to keep their phone charged, a portable battery pack is a great stocking stuffer. The Anker 20000 is a great portable charger. It’s slightly larger than a smartphone yet can recharge an iPhone 7 nearly seven times. It has two USB plugs so you’re able to charge multiple devices at once, and can be easily slipped into a pocket or bag for charging onthe-go. It’s truly the gift that keeps

An upgraded little black book: Whether used for a shopping list, sketchbook, journal or diary, it’s nice to have a beautiful notebook to carry around with you. Rifle Paper Company produces ornately designed paper goods, among them, compact notebooks. The Birch Notebook Set comes with two, 64-page richly colored books. Each 6-by-8 notebook features metallic gold foil accents and a lay-flat binding for easy writing or sketching. No-stress weeknight meals: Practicality meets fun with Blue Apron. Blue Apron is a meal kit delivery service that’ll save you time and answer the dreaded weeknight question, “What’s for dinner?” A $60 gift card covers a one-week meal plan for two people. Fresh, pre-portioned ingredients will be delivered to the recipient’s door and meals are ready in less than an hour - perfect for a work or school night. Blue Apron also makes a great gift for people learning how to cook because each recipe comes with simple, step-by-step instructions. A little slice of luxury: For a gift that’ll greet you with open arms, consider a Parachute bathrobe. Spun

from 100 percent Turkish cotton, Parachute’s bathrobes give you the ultimate spa-like experience in your own home. The robes are plush and absorbent, and are the perfect little luxury after a long day. Peace of mind: It’s hard to put a price tag on feeling safe and secure at home. Why not give that priceless feeling as a gift this holiday season? The Ring Spotlight Cam has got you covered. It’s a wire-free HD security camera that lets you see, hear and speak to anyone on your property from your smartphone or computer. It makes greeting guests, the delivery person or not-so-savory individuals quick and easy. Gift it with an eero WiFi System to ensure every corner of your home is connected and secure. - (BPT)

Smarten up your holiday wish list with these must-have gadgets

With the hectic pace of today’s busy lifestyles, is it really all that surprising that people everywhere are craving new smart technologies? After all, life basically demands that you save time and money wherever you can, and smart technologies utilized in your home deliver both. It’s easy, right? Research shows one-third of Americans plan to buy smart home devices this season, and while you may not find much value in a “smart egg tray” (yes, they are real), the following devices can help you save time and money while increasing the functionality of your home. 1. Smart thermostats save you money. Few pieces of smart home technology can have a bigger impact on your home all year long than a smart thermostat. Honeywell’s Lyric

Page 16

T5 saves you energy by managing your home’s temperature for you. Using geofencing, the Lyric T5 saves you money by putting the thermostat into energy-saving mode when someone leaves, and detecting when the first person is nearing the home to start making the home comfortable ahead of his or her arrival. 2. Smart lights, a bright idea. Forgetting to turn the lights off when you leave a room or your home is a common occurrence. Unfortunately, your power company never forgets your energy usage, and this simple mistake will show up promptly on your bill. Installing smart lights like Philips Hue light bulbs allows you to turn the lights off and on with your smartphone, meaning no matter where you are, reducing your energy usage and expense is as easy as flicking a switch. You can also

The Coto de Caza News

schedule them to turn on, even when you’re not home, which gives the appearance of someone being home, increasing your home’s security. 3. Security you can feel safe about. Whether it’s a baby crying or a smoke alarm, when something’s wrong, you want to know immediately. That’s where Honeywell’s Lyric C2 security camera delivers. This smart security camera does more than just pick up such noises and deliver smart alerts to your phone. It is also equipped to differentiate between sounds so you know exactly what has happened at home. This allows you to stay on top of things and keep an eye on your home no matter where you are. 4. Clean efficiently with smart cleaning technology. Vacuuming isn’t at the top of your list when it comes to ways to spend your

free time, so automating the process may just be the best holiday present of all. iRobot’s Wi-Fi connected robotic vacuums, such as the Roomba 900 Series, are capable of cleaning and navigating an entire level of a home, recharging and resuming as needed until the job is done - all with just the push of a button on the robot or in the iRobot HOME App. Wi-Fi connected Roomba vacuums can also be controlled by voice-activated commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant devices, making communicating with your Roomba a breeze. A full fleet of smart sensors guide the Roomba around your home, making 60 decisions every second, traveling under furniture and around that clutter you’ve been meaning to pick up - when you finally have a free moment. - (BPT)

Net proceeds of an estimated $60,000 will provide programs, services and support to develop the talents of adults with disabilities. Walmart was recognized as Vocational Visions’ 2017 Employer of the Year, with a table of Walmart supporters attending. J.D. Thorson, Director of the Laguna Niguel store, accepted the honor, which also included commendations from the California State Senate and Assembly. Vocational Visions Executive Director Joan McKinney said of Walmart: “We have partnered with Walmart since 2001. It is our mission to help people find employment but we cannot do it without the partnership and commitment from local businesses. Walmart knows the value adults with disabilities bring to the workplace: diversity, stability to high turnover positions and building customer loyalty.” Among those making it happen were McKinney; Linda Albers, Ph.D., Vocational Visions’ Board Chair; Joe Orsak, Vocational Visions’ Development Joan McKinney, Sean Ikola and Susan Samueil Director, and Clint Hufft took the stage both as emcee and auctioneer. Dinner featured a choice of a Salinas Cruz Organic Field Greens Salad with Point Reyes blue cheese and walnuts with a champagne vinaigrette or a Valley Baby Spinach Salad with feta cheese, dried cranberries, roasted pecans and apple cider vinaigrette. Entrées were a choice of Seared Free Range Chicken, poached pears and Point Reyes blue cheese sauce, Alaskan Halibut with ginger beurre blanc sauce or Son Rise Ranch Style Strip Steak with exotic mushroom sauce. A Chocolate Espresso Tart completed the delicious repast. The nonprofit’s main fundraiser featured world famous magician Johnny “Ace” Palmer entertaining guests throughout the evening. His performance following dinner saw him producing the proverbial rabbit out of a hat and live doves from underneath cones. The evening’s highlight, per tradition, was a performance by Vocational Visions’ clients dancing to Michael Jackson’s iconic “Thriller.” Vocational Visions Board of Directors supporting the fundraising efforts included the aforementioned Albers, Vice Chairperson Hilary Hurt, Secretary David Cosgrove, Treasurer Barbara Boteler and Members at Large John Connolly, Wayne Hunt, Edward Kenna, Sheri Lee, Howard Neufeld, Andrea Reade and Mark Sorenson. The Gala Committee included previously Board member Wayne Hunt and Magician Johnny “Ace” Palmer mentioned board members Albers, Boteler and Hurt as well as Lori Bartlett, with Tracy Roberts his wife Judy Hunt Barrie Best, Jill Cooper, Rebecca DiFranco, Roland Fernandez, Sharon Meredith, Mary Orsak, Carol Roberts and Sharon Sprague. The top auction items included an autographed Duck’s Corey Perry jersey, a “magical” performance by magician Johnny “Ace” Palmer, a wine party for 20, two tickets to the popular food event Table for 10, and tickets to see the LA Clippers play the Miami Heat. The very hot opportunity prize, a two-night stay at Montage Resort, prompted some brisk ticket sales, with a very happy Peter T. Stevenson taking the prize. Gala sponsors included Cotti Foods, Electron Beam Engineering, Pacifica Foods, Spectrum Rick Management, Patricia Trillwood, Barbara Boteler, Barbara and Patrick Deming, Carol Wilbert, City of Mission Viejo, Claudia Hill, Enterprise Fleet, Georgia’s Restaurant, Mike Danzi, Pacific Western Bank, Rancho Mesa Insurance, Rutan & Tucker, Sharon Sprague, Sharon Meredith, William & Connie Click and Carol and Rodney Wilbert. Since 1974, Vocational Visions has provided vocational, economic and social services to Orange County adults with intellectual/developmental and other disabilities. The nonprofit organization has seven comprehensive programs that serve more than 500 men and women by providing pathways Walmart executives attending included Daniel Elliot, Bobbie Elliot and to employment, life-long learning and social inclusion. Th i s G i f t D o e s n ’ t C o s t A D i m e !

The holidays provide a good opportunity to spend quality time with family, friends and coworkers while making deposits in our relationships. Naturally, conversation and talking with people is a big part of this season. “Most people are very good at talking about themselves, however, the best gift this year is the gift of listening, and it doesn’t cost a dime reminds Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna.” Listening is more than “hearing.” When you truly hear and comprehend what another person is saying, you add to their self-worth and validate them. Who wouldn’t want that for a gift? What’s the key? Speak less, listen more. Don’t try to “one up” the other person. Know you’re okay just who you are. We live in an increasingly busy world. No matter how busy or who you are, take the time to listen to others. Give co-workers, family and friends your attention. Greet them with a smile. Look them in the eyes and honor their thoughts. There is no better compliment you can pay another person than taking the time to ask them questions and listen to their responses. Try to listen without the intent to reply. Practice patience and listen completely until the person finishes his or her point. Break out of old habits of not listening and needing to be the center of attention. You’re great just the way you are. Not only will it make the holidays more enjoyable, it will help you in your professional and personal life. And it doesn’t cost a dime! Happy Holidays! 5 tips for staying healthy this holiday season minutes, an adult in the same age of the immune system, so Sanofi with family and friends this holiday

As the holiday season approaches, it is as important as ever to stay healthy. With holiday parties and family gatherings, illnesses like the flu can spread easily - and you don’t want to miss out on the festivities. As the largest provider of influenza vaccine to the U.S., Sanofi Pasteur encourages you to help protect yourself and those around you from influenza with an annual flu vaccination. While everyone six months of age and older, with rare exception, should get an annual flu vaccination, it is especially important for adults age 65 years and older, as the flu can be particularly devastating for this population. Combined with pneumonia, flu is one of the top ten leading causes of death in older adults in the United States.1 On average, every four minutes, an adult age 65 years and older is hospitalized due to flu or flurelated complications, and every 12

group dies as a result of flu or flurelated complications.1,2 In light of National Influenza Vaccination Week, here are five things you can do to help beat germs and promote health this holiday season. 1. Get an annual flu vaccination While many mistakenly think of the flu as only a mild illness and often confuse it with a cold, it is a contagious respiratory illness that can be severe and life-threatening, even for healthy individuals, and it can make the holiday season unbearable.3 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), getting an annual flu vaccination is the single best way to help prevent the flu each season.3 2. Ask your healthcare provider about which flu vaccine is right for you While an annual flu vaccination is vital for everyone six months of age and older, with rare exception, it is equally important to talk to your healthcare provider about choosing the right flu vaccine for you. Because the immune system weakens with age, making it harder to fight disease, flu can be especially severe for adults age 65 years and older.1 Certain vaccines are developed to address the age-related weakening

Pasteur encourages everyone to talk to their healthcare provider about choosing the right flu vaccine. To learn more about the impact of influenza on adults age 65 years and older and the importance of choosing the right vaccine, visit http://www.nfid. org/flualert. 3. Spread holiday cheer, not germs Be sure to wash your hands often with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds, especially before and after preparing food.4,5 Make handwashing part of your pre-cooking and pre-meal routine for the entire family. 4. Bundle up! While the holidays bring warmth and cheer, the weather outside may suggest otherwise. It’s important to bundle up to stay dry and warm during the cold, damp winter months. Be sure to wear appropriate outdoor clothing, including light, warm layers, gloves, hats, scarves and waterproof boots. 5. Head to bed If you do catch a cold or the flu, try to limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.6 The CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever has gone down, except to get medical care or for other necessities.6 Don’t miss out on time spent

season. By following these simple tips and getting an annual flu vaccination, you can help prevent the spread of influenza and its potentially severe complications. 1 U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The time-honored popularity of holiday cookie baking remains strong even in today’s grab-and-go society. “Most of us are looking for ways to simplify the holiday hubbub, and focus on activities that truly have meaning for our families,” says Ginny Bean, publisher of Ginny’s catalog and Ginnys.com. Bean, who fondly recalls baking holiday cookies with her mother and her three sons, offers the following easy tips for your own holiday cookie baking tradition. * Get organized. Read the recipe thoroughly. Gather your ingredients before even turning on the stove to make sure that you haven’t forgotten anything that would require an

unanticipated trip to the store. * Keep it simple. Bean recommends starting with this good, basic dough recipe and adding different ingredients to customize the taste and texture to personal preferences: Cream 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, 3/4 cup granulated sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar until fluffy. Add 2 eggs and 1 teaspoon vanilla and beat until well mixed. In separate bowl, whisk 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon baking soda together, then add slowly to creamed mixture, beating until combined. “There’s almost no end to what you can do to this dough,” says Bean. “Get creative and experiment with different mix-ins like lemon peel, pumpkin pie spice, even instant coffee, or substitute toffee or peppermint chips for traditional chocolate and butterscotch.” * Use the right fat. Some cookie recipes only achieve their best flavor and texture with butter. Hopefully, those recipes will specify “butter only; no substitutes.” Recipes calling for butter or margarine will produce good results with either, as long as you use a margarine that contains at least 80 percent vegetable oil. Check the nutrition label. The margarine should have 100 calories per tablespoon. Margarines with less than 80 percent vegetable oil have high water content and can result in tough cookies that spread

excessively, stick to the pan, or don’t brown well. * Measure accurately. Metal or plastic measuring cups are intended for dry ingredients such as flour and sugar. When measuring flour, stir it in the canister to lighten it and then gently spoon into a dry measuring cup and level the top with the straight edge of a knife. Glass or plastic cups with spouts are meant only for liquids. If you use a liquid measuring cup for flour, you’re likely to get an extra tablespoon or more of flour per cup, enough to make cookies dry. * Chill dough properly. The chilling time given in a recipe is the optimum time for easy rolling and shaping. If you need to speed up chilling, wrap the dough and place it in the freezer. Twenty minutes of chilling in the freezer is equal to about one hour in the refrigerator. * Use a powerful mixer. An electric stand mixer is the best way to mix heavy cookie dough. With a handheld mixer, you’ll probably end up needing to stir in flour by hand, which can be a nightmare. * Choose the right cookie sheets. Look for shiny, heavy-gauge cookie sheets with very low or no sides. Dark cookie sheets can cause cookie bottoms to overbrown, and cookies won’t bake evenly in a pan with an edge. Insulated cookie sheets tend to yield pale cookies with soft centers.

If you use them, don’t bake cookies long enough to brown on the bottom because the rest of the cookie may get too dry. Nonstick cookie sheets let you skip the greasing step. But the dough may not spread as much, resulting in thicker, less crisp cookies. Unless specified otherwise, a light greasing with shortening or quick spray with nonstick spray coating is adequate for most recipes. * Know your oven. Experiment with the temperature of your oven. If your oven typically cooks items faster than the recipe calls for, adjust accordingly. Don’t bake cookies for too long. They should be light brown around the edges and look a little underdone when they come out. Keep in mind that cookies will continue to cook from the heat of the cookie sheet after you remove them from the oven. Cool the cookies on the cookie sheet initially and then transfer them to a wire rack once they can be lifted with a spatula without breaking them. Once they are cooled completely, you can decorate them or store directly in an airtight container. Yule tools: 5 tips for dodging a holiday credit hangover All the glitz, glamour, gatherings and good tidings over the holidays can easily make you forget your disposable income has limits. Who wants to think about overspending when the jingle bells are rocking, the mistletoe is beckoning, peace and goodwill to men abound and the gifts are flowing like sweet, rich hot chocolate? Still, the gentle voice of reason must kick in if you don’t wish to grapple with Grinch-like credit issues once the holidays hit the wall of reality in January. That’s an issue faced by many; one survey found eight of 10 Americans either overspend over the holidays or deal with a spouse or partner who takes care of that on their behalf. Fear not. As long as you plan ahead, you should be able to enjoy your fair share of the season’s best offerings without experiencing buyer’s remorse once credit card statements make their appearance. Think about how these smart steps can keep your celebrations merry but manageable. 1. Think of everything. The costs of decorations, food, drinks, travel and fun events can rack up even faster than gift expenses. Remember to factor in tips, hostess gifts, greeting cards, postage and gas. The big picture may reveal you can’t throw the party of the century, hit up that holiday concert and spring for the hottest new electronics for all your nieces and nephews. 2. Divide and conquer. Right now, designate a spending limit for each giftee. Add the total, divide it by three and set aside that amount monthly from now through December. Stash the cash in envelopes labeled with giftee names and amounts, then make like an elf and get shopping. That plan spreads out the financial wallop and wards off overspending like a magic cloak. 3. Don’t be bargain-brainwashed. Stay your

course and avoid “special offers” unless they happen to fall under your spending plan. They’re not worth blowing your budget over. 4. Give thoughtfully. Shun holiday hype implying gifts must be pricey. Your handcrafted artwork, handmade snack, car detailing or night of babysitting may mean way more than a worthless store-bought gadget. 5. Manage your credit. Charging gifts is all too easy this time of year, partly because the money doesn’t seem as real when it’s exchanged via plastic. But those costs will come back to haunt you like the Spirit of Christmas Future if you get

too carried away with the fun of giving. As a rule, you should avoid charging anything you can’t pay off in one charge cycle if you wish to build the favorable credit score needed to secure the best lending terms. No one needs to act like the Grinch over the holidays. By thinking ahead and spending intelligently, you can enjoy the spirit of the season and still keep your January merry and bright without suffering a holiday credit hangover. For more useful information about effectively managing your credit, read monthly newsletter “The Score” at your.vantagescore.com. - (BPT)

3 essential tips for traveling with a pet during the holidays

The holidays mean different things to different people. Every family seems to have its own set of traditions, but one thing seems to be common among Americans during this time of year, and that’s traveling. Like Santa Claus making that long journey from the North Pole, it’s estimated that more than 90 million Americans (36 percent) will travel this holiday season, according to a recent survey conducted by Extended Stay America hotels and Kelton Global. Santa and his reindeer will hit the road during the 2017 holiday season - and he’s not alone, as nearly threequarters of Americans (69 percent) will do the same with their pets. “Pet parents are increasingly including their furry family members in their travel plans, especially during the holidays,” says pet expert Andrea

Arden, who has over 20 years of experience in the industry. “In fact, our companion animals can be such a great source of comfort while we’re away from home, that some people can’t even conceive of a vacation without their dog or cat by their side.” To ensure you and your animal companion bring cheer wherever you go, Arden has provided three essential tips for traveling with a pet this holiday season. 1. Prepare your pet Like finding the perfect gift for your loved ones, the earlier you start to plan and prepare, the easier it will be. A great holiday vacation begins with a trip to the veterinarian to make sure your animal is in good health, has all the medications they might need (and perhaps some extras) and is up-to-date on vaccines. Along

with their physical health, you want to make sure your dog or cat is mentally prepared for a journey that may involve new places, new smells and new people. To get your four-legged friends ready for the adventure, bring your pet to unfamiliar places like a local park and have them interact with new faces. When you do this, be sure to bring plenty of treats to praise your pet and reinforce that these new experiences are positive and fun. 2. Avoid guilty faux paws Forty percent of traveling pet parents feel guilty about leaving their pets home during the holidays. That’s because pets are considered part of the family, and nearly onethird of Americans (27 percent) say pets should be included in all holiday festivities. Places like Extended Stay America can help alleviate some of the stress (and guilt) pet parents might feel during this time of year; the hotel’s more than 600 properties nationwide welcome pets year-round, so families don’t need to make the difficult decision of leaving their animal companion behind. To make things even easier this season, if you book before Dec. 31 at esa.com/ holiday, your pets stay free. Consider it a retreat from the holiday madness for you and your four-legged friend. In addition to helping pet owners stay connected with their animals, Extended Stay America offers all the comforts of home for guests. That’s important, since nearly half

(47 percent) of travelers this holiday season plan to be away from home for five days or more. With fully equipped kitchens in each room so guests can still contribute a dish to their family gathering; on-site laundry facilities to keep guests looking their holiday best; and free, in-room Wi-Fi, it’s easy to feel at home at Extended Stay America. 3. Practice good petiquette We know, sometimes it’s hard to believe that your lovable, furry friend could misbehave. When traveling to unfamiliar places, a calm, happy animal makes everyone else calm and happy, too. Here are some pointers to ensure your pets stay on the nice list this holiday: * Teach your cat or dog to rest calmly in a crate before you leave, so they have a familiar spot when traveling. * If driving, take frequent breaks to walk your dog or check in on your cat. * Bring along a chew toy that is filled with a little bit of food, as this serves as a great distraction for an anxious or bored animal. * Outside, keep your pet on a leash and walk them away from public areas like flowerbeds. And always remember to clean up after them! * Never leave your pet in a room alone, unless you are sure they will not disturb neighbors. If you must, leave the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door, so housekeeping won’t startle them. - (BPT)

The undersigned caused said Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 059542-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
