Receiving care lead me to my purpose, a Coto resident’s personal journey Rodney Burris Co-founder of Care Partners At Home, an in- home care solutions company says “Care is about human connection and understanding the whole person you are caring for” “I’ve served others in healthcare for 16 years but I’ve also been a patient in a hospital bed many times in my life. In a sense, I’ve been on one side of the bed or the other for 39 years. My many experiences as a patient in the early years of my life were responsible for shaping my character, forming my powerful “why” and leading me to my purpose,” says Rodney Burris Co-founder of Care Partners At Home, an in-home care solutions company. “When I was 5, I had my 4th back surgery. I can still remember this experience vividly; particularly the fear and pain associated with the constant needle pricks, IV tubes, hooked to several machines and the severe pain of surgical tape being peeled off my back. More memorable though, was the loving, compassionate, empathetic touch I received from those who cared for me like I was their family. While they did not know me prior to admission, they did not treat me as a statistic or medical record number; rather, I was uniquely cared for based upon my individual needs. While the reason for admission was to have the surgical procedure, I had other needs that entered the social and psycho-social realms. At the age of five, it was hard to understand what was happening and why I was in the hospital. I had questions like, “why are people hurting me” and “why am I different than others?” The key to making this experience positive was having every one of my needs addressed. Throughout my admission, the members of my care team created social engagement through visits to a playroom full of toys down the hall. They replaced pain with painting. Through social interaction (and ice cream) they created an environment of love and hope for a five-year old boy facing crisis and fear. Quite simply, I felt worthy of love and there is nothing more powerful on this earth than experiencing love through human interaction and connection. This experience has stayed with me for 34 years and I’ve since had many similar stories. As I reflect on my patient experiences, I consider most of

them to be extraordinarily positive. At the center of my positive outcomes are not the medical procedures themselves, but rather the people delivering the care. Each member of a care team holds the power to add dividends to the trust bank; doing so contributes to the creation of a safe and positive environment. While things like natural light, aesthetics, technology and open space can enhance an environment; the care team is responsible for creating it. When a patient feels worthy of love through deep connection with a care provider, social and psycho-social health are positively impacted. Focusing on the whole person and tailoring the care to them specifically, delivers clinical AND quality of life outcomes. I contribute my high degree of empathy and compassion for others to having such an amazing support system of family and care providers around me at the scariest moments in my life. I recognize my resiliency has been due to the emotional, spiritual and psychological support I received through the social interactions and trusting engagements that inspire hope and healing. These are the environments we create for the clients of Care Partners At Home. While it is extremely important to have the knowledge and skill set to address and manage a chronic disease or illness, the most critical component of our care is creating an environment of trust through connection. So often we are called into crisis knowing only the most recent details of an Acute event or new diagnosis. This is a testament to the importance of having Geriatric Care Managers and Physicians on our team. Taking the time to learn about our client with the purpose of understanding their medical, clinical, spiritual, emotional, social and psychological needs. What did they do for a living? What brings passion and purpose to their lives? What stories do they love telling? Our beautiful stories begin with assessment and end in a care team deeply connected with our client (and their loved ones); delivering a loving, compassionate, empathetic care that declares, “you are family”. “YOU are worthy of LOVE.” I endeavor to care for those in need and make them feel the way others have made me feel. I am called to create environments for our clients that advocate healing, rehabilitation and a focus on wellness. Our teams accomplish this by first getting to know and understand the whole person for whom we will care. We do this by creating meaningful connections. If you similarly work to change the world through each human interaction and connection, please don’t hesitate to call me. I would love to hear your stories. My best to each of you and may you be blessed this Holiday season,

Fall entertaining forecast: cozy, comfortable and outdoors Whether an afternoon tailgating before the big game or a fun-filled evening under the dazzling autumn stars, the forecast for this season’s entertaining is trending toward cozy, comfortable and outdoors. “I think the big lifestyle shift right now is toward eating out less and entertaining more at home, and autumn is the perfect season for taking your get-togethers outside,” says Keith Winkler, marketing manager for dinnerware giant Replacements, Ltd. “Think about it - the temperatures are cooling down following our record breaking summer heat. You can have more people at outdoor gatherings than you can generally fit in your

home. Plus, there’s more flexibility because you can easily have one or more set ups, whether that means setting up tables for dinner or having canapés and finger foods around a fire pit.” Fall is a great season for ditching the paper and plastic and taking your dinnerware outdoors. Tableware industry experts say there are many positives to introducing your “good stuff” to Mother Nature. It won’t blow away like paper plates, and it’s far more environmentally friendly than Styrofoam. Mix it up While serving finger foods on small plates is extremely popular and encourages your guests to mingle, there’s a definite return toward the comfort and connection of a sit down meal. To set the perfect fall table, designers encourage mixing and matching patterns to reflect your distinctive style. “I generally start with a pattern that sets the tone for the evening, one that reflects what I’m feeling for this particular gathering,” says Replacements’ designer Julie Robbins. “Whether that’s a cute salad plate that’s going to sit atop the dinner plate, or a fun color I want as my main design element or theme. I then add pieces that either draw out that feeling or ground the place setting to give me the ambiance I want for my

jar look by mixing glassware and candles,” says Robbins. “Lighting can truly set the mood for your gathering, which is why I’m big on creating an eclectic grouping down the middle of my table by mixing glass and metal candlesticks with hurricanes, clear decanters and other pieces I can use to hold candles. If you don’t think you have enough pieces, old tumblers make great votive cups, while you can also turn wine glasses and goblets upside down and place candles on the inverted base. This is beautiful for daytime entertaining, and when lit, creates a simple, warm feeling on those nights when you’re just starting to feel a nip in the air.” Looking for more fall inspiration? entire table.” Robbins says that may mean pairing a current fall favorite, such as a dinner plate in Woodland by Spode, with vintage American amber glass from the 1940s. She also mixes different pieces. For example, adding a hued glass accent salad plate creates another layer of dimension, while a bright goblet can infuse a much needed pop of seasonal color. Light up your evenings There’s really no need to go heavy on the decorations for fall outdoor entertaining. Bright leaves, pumpkins, seasonal berries and other naturals create the perfect autumn décor. Experts say you don’t need a floral centerpiece if you have nature all around you. Instead, use candles to light up your evenings. “It’s time to upgrade from the Mason

COTO DE CAZA VILLAGE COMMUNITY YULE LOG BONFIRE CEREMONY

At Coto Valley Country Club, 23331 Via Venado, Coto de Caza, CA 92679 Sunday, December 11th - 5:30 P.M. Schedule of events: • PARADE of ILLUMINATED EQUESTRIANS • YULE LOG CEREMONY & BONFIRE • SING ALONG CAROLING Since 1979, Coto de Caza residents have held an old-fashioned Yule Log bonfire at the Coto Valley Country Club, Cote’s heritage clubhouse located in The Village, the first community to be established in Coto de Caza. Former resort Vice President, Tom Scott initiated the tradition and Coto residents have continued it nearly every year since. Begun in ancient times, perhaps with Scandinavian Winter Solstice celebrations, the Yule Log ceremony marked the darkest time of the year, before the rebirth of the sun. A log large enough to burn for twelve days was lighted to bring warmth and light to the people. Chips or bark from the log were always kept to ignite the following year’s log. As the tradition was carried to other European countries, adaptations were made for their customs. In England a log was burned for the Twelve Nights of Christmas to represent the light of the Savior instead of the light of the sun. In France the Yule Log became the Buche de Noel, a rich cake which is traditional even today. In a Persian practice, a large log was cut in four places, marking the four seasons. Called a Yole, the log was

carried around a group four times and each time the people would touch a different section for each season to dispel personal faults, mistakes and bad choices made during the past year. In the Coto de Caza tradition, each year a different family from the community is chosen by the Chipper Society which is made up of past recipients. The newly selected

Coto family is chosen for their acts of service to their community. This year’s “Chippers” will be announced during the ceremony. A special equestrian parade, caroling and the bonfire are planned for this year’s festivities. Activities begin at 5:30 P.M. for all Coto residents.

It matters not if a tree is green, plastic or aluminum. It only matters that it is decorated with smiles. ~Julie Andrews

Santa margarita high school Students Honored for Community Service By: Sean Zeitler Photos by: Robert Russell Sydney Fredette and Isabella Zintel were named the Santa Margarita Catholic High School volunteers of the year in the 2017 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. In addition, Emily Caraig, Cassidy Medina and Natalie Rule received Certificates of Merit for their volunteer community service. Sponsored by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the awards recognize outstanding community service by young Americans. Sydney and Isabella are now eligible for California youth volunteer of the year awards. Two state honorees, one middle level and one high school student, will be named in February. State honorees will receive a $1,000 award and attend ceremonies with a parent or guardian in May of 2017. Other honorees will receive bronze medallions or certificates of excellence. Sydney Fredette started out with an idea to throw tea parties for homeless children. Her idea has evolved over the past nine years into an organization that has served

more than 2,000 children, gifting them with custom bears, blankets, pajamas, sleeping bags and books during the Christmas season. Sydney founded an initiative called “Beary Merry Christmas” in 2007 to make children in her community happy by gifting them custom stuffed bears. Sydney and her team of volunteers have distributed more than $70,000 in goods and necessities to disadvantaged children and she has expanded her “Be the Change Club” to other schools. Isabella Zintel used her love of dance to start a dance program through the Boys and Girls club. She is the founder of a girls’ mentorship and empowerment program that teaches academic success and leadership skills, nurtures confidence and encourages healthy living through diet and dance. She teaches dance to at-risk youth as an after school program. She has worked with vendors to set up a voucher program to help families get healthy groceries at a discounted cost, wrote a children’s recipe book that incorporated healthy food, raised donations to purchase a hydro garden and filmed an instructional dance

Tickets for the 2017 Pageant of the Masters “The Grand Tour” on Sale Now

Tickets for the much-anticipated 2017 Pageant of the Masters are on sale now and make the perfect holiday gift for the art lover on your list. This holiday season share the excitement with tickets to next summer’s production of The Grand Tour. The Pageant of the Masters will be performed nightly from July 7 through August 31, 2017. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the desire to experience the world’s great art firsthand inspired the European tradition of continental travel on the Grand Tour. Inspired to set out on pilgrimages by land and sea to the great cultural centers of Europe, and eventually the globe, those early travelers often risked life and limb to stand in the presence of masterpieces. It’s that original dedication to expanding one’s horizons by visiting the great art centers of Europe that fueled Pageant Director Diane Challis Davy’s excitement and research as she fine-tuned plans for next summer’s production, The Grand Tour. “Perhaps because I do so much

virtual traveling via Google,” Challis Davy offered, “I have a fantasy about actual travel and sightseeing. I was curious about the tremendous difficulties travelers encountered in the 18th century, with horse-drawn coaches on unpaved roads and no railways, no hotels. Even restaurants hardly existed, and there were virtually no public museums.” There’ll be no shortage of masterpieces in the 2017 Pageant, including works by Leonardo da Vinci, Tiepolo, Longhi, Watteau, Reynolds and Romney. But, as in previous years, the production’s theme will expand to include American artists like John Singer Sargent whose work was transformed by his travels. With the coming of the 20th century, new modes of transportation made it possible for almost everyone to go on their own “tourists’ grand tour,” and the theatrical possibilities assure no shortage of Pageant-style fun and inventive showmanship. A side trip to Pompeii, a celebration of Carnival in Venice and the European tour of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show offer abundant opportunities for surprises and special effects. And a tribute to Paris in the early 20th century when audiences in clubs embraced the talents of Josephine Baker, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington reveals how a change of scene can launch an

artist’s career. As always, Challis Davy and her staff realize the Pageant wouldn’t be possible without their volunteers who make it their summer destination, traveling from all over the Southland and returning year after year to take part. Challis Davy offered one final thought, “The Grand Tour is about travel for pleasure. And what greater pleasure can there be than to find oneself in the presence of great art at the end of the journey?” As an added value, a Pageant ticket also gives unlimited admission all summer long to the Festival of Arts Fine Art Show. Advance tickets are $15 - $230 and may be purchased by calling 1-800-487-3378 or online at www.PageantTickets.com.

A B O U T T H E PA G E A N T OF THE MASTERS The Pageant of the Masters is arguably one of the most unique productions in the entire world. Audiences are amazed and enchanted by ninety minutes of tableaux vivants (“living pictures”), incredibly faithful re-creations of classical and contemporary works of art, with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. A live narrator guides patrons through the story of each living picture accompanied by a full orchestra. The Festival of Arts is a nonprofit organization that produces the Festival of Arts Fine Art Show and the Pageant of the Masters. Proceeds support the arts in Orange County.

4 ways to make your family’s holiday portraits shine Take a look at your family. How many changes have crept in since last year? And one year from now, when it’s time to send out holiday cards again, think about how much more they will have changed. Sending a family photograph as your holiday card is one way to share with your friends and loved ones the joy and pride your family makes you feel. But more importantly, as the years pass, the holiday memories within these pictures will become more and more precious. It certainly is easy enough to have a friend snap some pictures on a smartphone and print off a stack of copies with a pre-designed template. But if you take the idea a couple of steps further, booking a session with a professional photographer will result in stunning cards that people will love to display and keep. In addition to that, you’ll have framed gifts to wrap up for your loved ones. The advantage to using a professional photographer is that they have the skills and artistic ability to make beautiful images that you will cherish forever. In addition to that, they can partner with you to create a style and effect that matches your family’s unique personality. To get you started, here are four different styles that just might capture your family’s personality and the magic of

the holiday spirit. Classic Simple yet timeless, this background is often neutral with the family sitting in formal poses. The photographer is less likely to use editing effects to alter the finished product. To prepare for this, choose a color and style that is clean, uniform and classic - something that would be set off by a holiday-themed border when you’re designing your card layout. In the end, the goal is to draw the eye to the face, which is what the classic style emphasizes more than anything. Modern This style ditches the formal posing and creates a relaxed, candid feel. You come as you are, perhaps using a setting that is familiar and comfortable to your family, such as building a snowman in your backyard or taking a hike through the winter woods. Whatever you bring to the shoot, the idea is to showcase your family relaxed and happy together. Eclectic This style takes the modern approach to a highly specialized, highly individualized level and uses special effects and editing to convey humor or a sense of drama. For example, perhaps your holiday portrait could feature your family members forming a human ladder

to place a star on the top of the tree. Look for a photographer with the savvy and technique to pull off these specific effects and dramatic images. Vintage What’s old is once again new. What better way to call back to the family roots that tie your loved ones together? You can express this by pulling from your family heritage. For example, you could dress your daughter in your childhood velvet dress. Or include your grandfather’s vintage toy train set as a prop. Some

photographers specialize in black and white photography, as well as sepia effects. Of course, if you really want to try an authentic and timeless look, some photographers are experimenting with glass plate photography. Which style of photography is right for you and your family? Take a “Family Photography Style quiz” and, once you’re ready for your new photo session, check out findaphotographer. com to find the right photographer for you and in your city. - (BPT)

Easy season: Fall gardening spells success

Scrumptious, healthy veggies, hefty harvests and a break on your grocery bill - many appealing advantages draw people to growing their own vegetables. If you’ve never gardened before or you’re a green thumbed, garden-guru, you’ll soon figure out that fall’s a great time to get growing your own produce. Cooler temperatures and milder sun can spell success for any gardener who takes up the trowel as autumn approaches. Favorable fall conditions mean growing cool weather crops is comparatively easy, with less watering and care needed for a successful garden. Cool crops will start out strong, growing quickly and then slow their growth as days become shorter and cooler. You’ll also need to work less to protect your garden from pests, as both insects and animal populations will taper off in fall. And since weeds will germinate less frequently and grow slower, weeding won’t be a timeconsuming task. Finally, more rain and less sun and heat mean you’ll need to water less. If you’re ready for gardening success, now is the time to grab that hoe, break some ground and get growing. Tips to get you started:

Pick your plants Start with transplants, rather than seed. A shorter, gentler growing season means you need to get started right away. Many local garden centers will have a selection of transplants from producers like Bonnie Plants that will grow well in your geographic region. Transplants will be six weeks old and give you a jump start. You’ll be able to harvest sooner than if you start from seed and skip the volatile, sometimes unsuccessful, seed-starting process. Bonnie’s transplants come in earthfriendly biodegradable pots, making planting easy, preventing transplant shock and sparing the use of much plastic. As the pot biodegrades, it’ll add nutrients to your soil, too. Choose cool crops that your family likes to eat. -Popular fall favorites include: * Lacinato kale -A cold-hardy vegetable, kale leaves sweeten after frost. Kale is a super food, and Lacinato leaves extend excellent health benefits, lowering cholesterol, fighting cancer and decreasing inflammation. * Early dividend broccoli - Many greens love the fall, and broccoli is no exception. Plant stalks 18 inches apart and get ready for an easy,

hearty harvest. Broccoli is high in fiber and calcium. * Cabbage - The quintessential fall vegetable, Bonnie’s hybrid cabbage grows large, round blue-green heads. From salads to stews, cabbage adds a punch of flavor and nutrients like beta-carotene, vitamins C and K, and plenty of fiber. * Romaine lettuce - Romaine packs a big punch with more vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytonutrients than other popular types of lettuce. Rich in fiber, vitamin C and betacarotene, romaine is especially good for heart health. Space transplants 18 inches apart. Once you know what you’ll be planting, it’s time to get the ground ready. Remove any garden debris from the past season’s garden and remove weeds before they go to seed. S i z e u p y o u r s oi l . Loosen compacted soil, fluffing it up with a garden fork. Soil test and amend if necessary. Adding a 2-inch layer of bagged compost is always good practice. You can also spread a balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, according to labeled instructions, for added nutrients. Plants will need an inch of moisture per week, either through rain or

supplemental watering. You might want to consider raised bed planting; beds are easy to build or buy and allow you to start out with good quality soil. Plus, you’ll bend less come harvest time. Position your plot and let the sunshine in.Most vegetables need full sun - at least six hours per day. Finally, don’t fear frost. When frost threatens, cover plants with floating row cover, cold frame or a cloche. Or, you can grow fall veggies in a container and move pots to a protected location on frosty nights. Whether you’re working in the backyard, a raised bed or in containers on a deck, you’ll see how easy and successful fall planting can be. Start now to ensure you enjoy a healthy, plentiful and fulfilling fall harvest. For more tips on fall gardening visit www.bonnieplants. com. - (BPT)

Set in the early twentieth century, Dressing Downton traces the events that uprooted British society on the eve of World War I and ushered in the Roaring Twenties, the Jazz Age and a new way of life. The costumes were created for the show’s aristocratic Crawley family and their servants who inhabit the fictional English country estate of Downton Abbey. The costumes range from country tweeds and riding outfits; servants’ uniforms and footmen’s livery; to lavish evening attire crafted from sumptuous fabrics and decorated with intricate embroidery, lace and beading. Included are the gowns worn when Matthew first comes to Downton; the ostentatious outfits of the flamboyant American, Martha Levinson; military uniforms from World War I; and delicate afternoon dresses worn by the Ladies – Cora, Mary, Edith and Sybil. Judging from the number of decorating crews working in the local area neighborhoods, it appears that the holiday season is fast coming upon us. In times past, many homeowners would bring out their own ladders , go to the store and purchase their own lighting to hang on their homes. However, in recent times, many homeowners opt to hire a crew of professionals who are well-equipped to race up and down scaffolding and ladders to hang the decorating lights, arrange the electronics and timers to make the holidays much happier. these professionals make this task much simpler and exceptionally quicker. A two-story house shown in the photo above, was recently decorated with a complete array of lighting and installation and under one hour.another great selling point

from the decorating crews is that they come back after the holidays, pack the whole thing up and put it in the garage for you or take it away whichever is your pleasure. Nearly all of the local communities hold decorating contests and competitions to determine the best decorated homes in the area. Judging usually takes place between Thanksgiving and December 10 so if you are contemplating joining any of these contests, now would be the time to commence the decorating job at your house. This cheerful band is from the crew of holiday lighting including the Scotty Martin, Alex Bale, Connor Ziencing,Dave Collins, Mike Collins, Anthony Cann,Joshua Fawcett, and Donovan Decair

N o - s t r e s s h o l i d a y COTO GENE R AL STO R E entertaining tips and tricks DEVELOPMENT PROGRESS REPORT

A holiday party is a wonderful way to celebrate the season with friends and family. However, no matter how big or small the guest list, hosting the event can turn stressful fast. Before you know it, your holiday gathering has become more frustrating than festive, and you’re suddenly feeling like a Scrooge. With a few tips and tricks, you can easily host an impressive holiday party without the fuss. From easy appetizers to elegant ambiance, try these five stress-free ideas for creating a memorable event: Opt for potluck: The holidays are all about coming together and helping others, so this year instead of tackling a multi-course meal, set up the buffet table and invite guests over for a potluck. You provide the appetizer and main course and allow guests to bring over their favorite holiday recipes to share. Amazing appetizers: Set out apps that are easy on the host but don’t compromise taste, such as cheese spreads with a crudite plate and a variety of chips or flat breads. Try the new Alouette Sharp Cheddar spread on a crostini topped with thinly sliced prosciutto. If you want to be a little more adventurous, swap in either the Chipotle or Ranch variety for an extra kick.

Simplify the color scheme: To give your home a professionally-decorated touch without the extra effort, focus on simplifying holiday hues. For a time-saving, chic look, use just two or three colors. For example, gold and red or silver and purple are timeless pairings that will transform your party into an elegant affair. Add a magical twinkle: Strings of lights are one of the easiest ways to transform any space into a winter wonderland. Try incorporating strands of mini lights into topiaries and tablescapes for instant holiday allure. Just remember to test lights before using so you don’t end up with burntout bulbs or broken strings. Create a premade signature cocktail: By making a big batch of a signature drink ahead of time, you’ll have more free moments for mingling. For example, fill a punch bowl with eggnog or set out pitchers of sangria so guests can grab a tasty libation and toast to a happy new year. The right strategies will help you create a holiday party that will be the talk of the town long after the new year has arrived. What’s more, these tips don’t require excess time, stressful steps or unneeded expenses. And that’s a holiday surprise to welcome with open arms. - (BPT)

COTO DE CAZA GENERAL STORE PROGRESS REPORT Larry and Carol, developers of the Coto de Caza General Store are still working diligently through the county approval process. We appreciate the interest and support of the Coto de Caza Community. There have been several obstacles to overcome with the county and we wish to thank Supervisor Lisa Bartlett and Victor Cao for aiding in the process together with our project manager John Cox with procedural advice from Dr. Stacey Lundin, Kevin Canning, County Planner and other supportive professionals within the community of Coto de Caza. All of the proposed businesses ( A Boutique, Mailbox Store, Realtor Coffee House, a Dry Cleaner, that will be in the Coto de Caza General Store including Ron Castruita and Steve Dalby, owners of Hansen’s Natural Foods, Health Food and Grocery Store, Restaurant and Wine Bar and Compounding Pharmacy who have happily made adjustments

to their site as the anchor tenant due to county development requirements. According to our architect Todd Voelker, we now have to wait for the last approval from the county to come in by December 16, 2016 (19 Months past our original goal) We are also in the process of obtaining the bids for the construction and final funding. It would be very helpful if we could get a final traffic impact fee waived prior to the payment of the permit (the fee is for freeway impact a non-issue) If the Coto de Caza residents were to provide their help on this issue, it would be helpful. You can send a supportive email to Orange County Supervisor Lisa Bartlett,(her email is lisabartlett@ocgov.com)along with County Planning Staff. Please email us for a list of the pertinent emails, along with a draft of a letter you can reference. I can be contacted at: Larry@longbeachcoolapartments.com Thank you for all of your support! THUNDERING PIANO AND ORCHESTRAL TOUR DE FORCE at pacific symphony Pacific Symphony rings in the New Year with two monumental Russian works on one exceptional program. First, one of the repertoire’s mostloved and instantly recognizable concertos—Tchaikovsky’s gorgeous and grand Piano Concerto No. 1— becomes the center of attention for this orchestral showcase led by Music Director Carl St.Clair. Demanding virtuosity and superb technique to deliver its pounding parallel chords and rapid finger work, Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece is in excellent hands with the 2009 gold-medal winner of the Van Cliburn Competition, Haochen Zhang. The Jerusalem Post wrote of Zhang: “Such a combination of enchanting, sensitive lyricism and hypnotizing forcefulness is a phenomenon encountered very rarely.” Sharing the spotlight for this concert is Prokofiev’s formidable Fifth Symphony, one of the great instrumental works of the 20th century. Capturing passionate musical statements throughout, this concert takes place Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 12-14, 2017 at 8 p.m., in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. A preview talk with Alan Chapman begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25-$125 (Box Circle, $195); for more information or to purchase tickets, call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org. To further enhance the concert experience, this performance is one of four this season that features image magnification on the big screen to give the audience a closer look at the pianist, conductor and musicians of Pacific Symphony. And don’t miss the Symphony’s next Sunday Casual Connections concert, “Russian Passion,” taking place Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017 at 3 p.m., in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall—when Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 gets the extra attention it deserves. The 90-minute concert, led by Maestro St.Clair, is an in-depth exploration of the work that Prokofiev considered the pinnacle of his career. Tickets are $25-$98. For more information or to purchase tickets, please call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org. “We will have finished 2016 with a big program of German/Austrian music— Brahms, Richard Strauss and Johann Strauss,” explains Maestro St.Clair, “so I wanted to begin 2017 with two equally balanced works from two of Russia’s greatest composers— Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky. Beginning the concert with that famous horn call and one of the most memorable melodies in the entire repertoire will Page 16

welcome our Pacific Symphony family back after New Year’s with a beloved favorite.” One of Tchaikovsky’s bestknown works and among the most famous in all of classical music, the First Piano Concerto is a deeply expressive and romantic magnum opus. Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece takes off with a big melody and ends with an even larger one, and there are hundreds of hills and valleys in between. Each movement has drama, grandeur, beauty—all juxtaposed into one magnificent soundscape. The orchestra and the soloist often take turns introducing different melodies, revealing different textures and colors to the same melody—which makes it all the more shocking to realize that it was not an instant hit. “When Tchaikovsky first played his concerto for Nikolai Rubenstein, one of the greatest pianists of the day, it was met with absolute silence,” says St.Clair, “Rubenstein called it ‘pathetic,’ ‘worthless’ and ‘unplayable.’ Even with such harsh comments, Tchaikovsky vowed not to change a single note. Today, we know Tchaikovsky’s concerto as one of the most—if not the most—beloved piano concertos in the repertoire. In fact, it wasn’t ‘unplayable’ as Rubinstein first thought,” St.Clair surmises. “It is a staple concerto that all soloists play, and with great joy and anticipation.” Indeed, in 1875, critics and soloists deemed Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto technically impossible to play but now orchestras and pianists across the globe perform it. With its explosive opening chords and lyrical melodies, Tchaikovsky composed a concerto that the great American pianist Van Cliburn interpreted to win the first International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow in 1958. Contemporary pianists continue to play this first piano concerto with bold, dramatic keystrokes that produce rippling passages of beautiful music, and Zhang is no exception. “Haochen has the perfect musical temperament for this virtuosic work,” states St.Clair. It’s going to be an elated musical experience for everyone.” If anyone is adept at communicating the beauties of the lyrical slow movement of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, it’s Zhang, who shines in the virtuosic passages. According to the Boston Globe, Zhang, gold medal winner of the 13th International Van Cliburn Competition in 2009, displays “poetic temperament as much as technical power… [He is] a pianist with ample reserves of power whose imagination seems nonetheless most

The Coto de Caza News

Haochen Zhang kindled by subtle delicacy,” artistic gifts that should serve him well when he tackles Tchaikovsky’s popular piano concerto. Since his Cliburn victory, the young Chinese pianist Zhang has been captivating audiences across the globe with his virtuosity, lyricism and magnetic stage presence. His performance of Liszt’s Concerto No. 1 at the BBC Proms with Yu Long and the China Philharmonic received rave reviews: “He made the allegretto dance with Mendelssohnian lightness and Lisztian diablerie, and played the melody of the Quasi Adagio with melting softness,” commented Ivan Hewitt of The Telegraph. Also on the Symphony’s program is Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony, which is considered one of the great orchestral works of the 20th century. It is a piece that Pacific Symphony last conquered at the end of the 2009-10 season, led by St.Clair, who points out that: “Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto premiered in Boston. And in November of 1945, Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony got its second performance and its American premiere also in Boston.” The composer described his Fifth as “the culminating point of my creative life. I imagine the Symphony as the expression of the grandeur of

the human spirit.” Prokofiev, like many other great composers—Beethoven, Shostakovich, Sibelius—seemed to reach a musical pinnacle by his Fifth Symphony. This is a symphony composed in a single month during World War II and while Prokofiev was held up in a protected house with other famous Russian composers, including Shostakovich. “It had been 14 years since Prokofiev had written a symphony, but this one just welled up inside him and gushed forth,” says St.Clair. “It is composed in dedication to the strength of humanity. Throughout the symphony one can hear the mechanical figures and the power of machine-like rhythms and sheer orchestral power. There are also moments of extreme tenderness and emphatic passion. It has it all!” T h e S y m p h o n y ’s C l a s s i c a l Series is made possible by the Hal and Jeanette Segerstrom Family Foundation, with additional support from The Westin South Coast Plaza, KUSC and PBS SoCal. Sunday Casual Connections receives support from KPCC. The 2016-17 Piano Soloists are sponsored by The Michelle F. Rohé Distinguished Pianist’s Fund.

Taking Art to New Heights: The Work of John Duggan

Native Orange County resident John Duggan has lived in southern Italy now for almost three decades, and during that time has become a famous and sought-after artist. He is a unique blend of architect and painter, and has mastered the fine art of handdecorating walls and ceilings with his trompe l’oeil creations. “It’s a lost art even here in Italy. Many homes have decorated ceilings dating back to the late 1800’s, when artisans from Naples would travel around the country and paint elaborate decor in the palazzos and villas of aristocratic families. John studied architecture at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and was introduced to the splendors of Italy while studying in Florence during his final year. He met his future wife who was also studying in Florence. Duggan is also a master watercolor painter, and his studio is filled with both landscapes and portraiture. How does someone who has lived in Italy for half of his life still describe himself as a kid from California? “Well, I was born and raised in Orange County, and have never lost that easy-going California attitude. It’s interesting to see how the rest of the world views California. I live in a town called Lecce in southern Italy in a region known as Puglia, and we share many aspects of California, namely the beautiful beaches and sunny weather. Today Duggan does commissioned work all over the world. We asked Duggan what brought him to Coto? “I first heard about Coto de Caza from my grandmother Margaret, who decided to move here from Garden Grove after she retired in the early 1980’s. As the story goes, she fell in love with the area, walked through a model home, and said “I’ll take it.” The realtor said, “you mean, you like the floor plan? You’d like a house like this one?” And she replied “no, I want THIS house.” The man quickly explained that this was a model home, and that they couldn’t sell that particular house until all the lots in the subdivision were sold. My grandma answered that wouldn’t be a problem, “just let me know when the time comes and I’ll take it.” She was born and raised in rural Kansas, and she had this no-nonsense attitude about her that I truly aspire to myself.” Margaret’s daughter Lynn Larson has asked her nephew John to paint a mural on her living room ceiling. “I really admire the Coto de Caza housing concept, but I think it can be taken a step farther. The area is filled with beautiful homes, each beautifully furnished and personalized to the owner’s taste, but the architecture remains essentially the same. Linda wanted to further personalize her home by asking me to render a sky ceiling that will add depth and perspective to the room. It will also adapt to her beautiful furnishings, much of which belonged to my grandmother. I hope it becomes a model for others to see

just how much a decorated ceiling can add to the beauty and sophistication of a Coto home.” Grandma Margaret was an excellent artist herself, and the walls are filled with her floral paintings. “I was truly inspired by my grandmother for many reasons, but above all by her artistic talents. She is the main reason I chose my field of work, and everything I draw or paint has a piece of her in it. Painting her home is a unique opportunity for me to give something back to her memory.” You can meet John Duggan and see his ceiling mural along with other examples of his work on December 10, 2016, 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. & December 11, 2016 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Lynn Larson’s home on 24112 Country View Drive, Coto de Caza. Balanced treats can help you enjoy the holiday and wellness seasons With family gatherings and New Year’s resolutions, this is the time of year where the holiday and wellness seasons find themselves on a collision course. The key to fully enjoying both seasons is finding treats that balance great taste with nutritional value. Hazelnuts, which are widely known as the culprit behind the irresistible flavor of chocolate hazelnut spreads, are one way to consciously enjoy the season. Rich in vitamins and dietary fiber, and naturally cholesterol and gluten free, hazelnuts can amplify a variety of foods and flavors for an indulgence-meets-nutritious experience. The finest hazelnuts are grown in the lush fields along the Black Sea coast of Turkey, where the optimal climate of the region produces hazelnuts that have a creamy, buttery flavor and crunchy texture. Turkish hazelnuts add extra vitamins and fiber to recipes, creating a nutritious but indulgent snack, such as this recipe for hazelnut chocolate energy bars. Dates, oats and chocolate chips are bound with hazelnut butter for an on-the-go boost perfect for breakfast time, or any time. Find more hazelnut inspiration at hazelnutsfromturkey.com.

Hazelnut Chocolate Energy Bars 1 cup dates 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup hazelnut butter 1/4 cup honey 1 cup hazelnuts, toasted 1 1/2 cups rolled oats 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate

chips Place dates in food processor and mix until small bits remain and form ball. Add cocoa powder and salt and process. Heat hazelnut butter and honey until warm. Pour into food processor along with remaining ingredients. Pulse until well mixed.

Transfer to lightly greased and foillined 9-by-9-inch pan. Using spatula, pack mixture into tight square. Freeze to set for 15 minutes. Remove and cut into 15 bars. Store in airtight container or bag in fridge to keep fresh, or in freezer for longer term storage.

Tips for finding the perfect guy gift this holiday season Guys can be the hardest people to shop for, and finding the perfect gift has become a daunting holiday tradition. Sure, they will appreciate the thought behind another bundle of tube socks - and might even wear them - but there are gifts that bring a wow factor and make even the most stoic guys light up like a little kid. Add to a collection Adding to a guy’s collection is a great gift idea. If you’re unsure about what to choose, ask him what he collects and what he needs to take it to the next level. He will be flattered you’re showing interest and you’ll gain valuable insight into that perfect gift. Give tools for do-it-yourself projects You may not know every project the DIYer in your life is working on, so choose a multi-purpose tool. Tools like the Klutch Cordless Impact Wrench from Northern Tool + Equipment are the perfect partner for all those auto, construction or equipment maintenance projects. This 24-volt, cordless wrench delivers heavy torque and includes four different sockets assuring he Page 24

has the right piece for any job. Fill his garage or man cave Every guy has a little space in the home he likes to call his own. For some it’s the garage, for others it’s the man cave in the house, and for others maybe the garage is his man cave. Wherever he chooses to relax, he might enjoy a personalized

beer pitcher or an under-the-counter fridge. His garage will also look great with a new toolbox or shop stool. Find the unexpected Finding a gift he might get from a buddy will be a pleasant surprise for him. The Harley-Davidson 7-Liter Pilsner Glass from Kotula’s will turn heads and create a lot of laughs.

This giant beer glass can hold up to about 18 cans of his favorite beer and will make a big statement. If you use these shopping tips for the guys in your life, you won’t even need to check your holiday list twice. With a good plan in mind, you’ll find options he will enjoy and actually use BPT.

How small businesses can capitalize on the holiday shopping season

For entrepreneurs and small businesses owners, the holiday season offers an incredible opportunity to boost sales and increase the bottom line. Just like how the early bird gets the worm, starting holiday promotions early will position your business for optimum growth. Polishing your online identity, optimizing marketing opportunities and engaging in positive customer relations are key strategies for boosting profits. It may be the season of red and green, but businesses that take advantage of these expert tips will be better positioned to see a lot of numbers in the black. Email marketing tips The most essential step in creating effective holiday marketing emails is to start early. In fact, 2015 email data from GoDaddy shows that it’s best for companies to get a head start on their email marketing campaigns as early as November. The days with the highest open rates before Christmas were during the first week of November, specifically Nov. 2.

Even if those dates have passed, starting ASAP can help boost traffic and sales. “Black Friday and Cyber Monday might seem like the perfect days to send promotional emails, but small businesses should proceed with caution,” says Eric Gilbert, director of GoDaddy Email Marketing. “With higher sending volume comes lower email open rates. Our advice to our customers is twofold. First, get a head start on your holiday campaigns by sending before the peak shopping days arrive. And second, be sure to write crisp, compelling subject lines to help stand out in the inbox.” In creating an effective email, consider providing valuable information and useful tips rather than straightforward sales copy. Shab Sadeghi, founder of Shabbella, a lifestyle brand for women, uses GoDaddy Email Marketing to stay in touch with her customers throughout the holiday season. “I like to share style tips on how my customers can wear Shabbella products multiple ways throughout the season,” says Sadeghi. “In the past, I’ve provided beautiful gift boxes with orders during the holidays. I love to give back to my customers, plus everyone loves gifts!” Another way to increase email marketing efforts is to send personalized emails. Personalized emails improve click-through rates by 14 percent and conversion rates

by 10 percent, according to Aberdeen Group. Social media tips Keeping active on popular social media platforms helps brands engage with their customers and influence purchasing decisions. What’s more, 51 percent of people will use social media to get gift ideas, according to a statistica survey. In addition to staying active, give your social efforts a holiday makeover with a few new strategies. For example, music is a huge part of how people interact during the holidays. Share popular holiday songs and encourage your audience to do the same. Next, go for the emotional response. Heartwarming stories of generosity, charity and creativity abound during this time of year and tend to get a lot of play on social media. In addition, focus on the entertainment value over the sale. The holidays, while joyful, are often filled with stress. Giving your users a break from the madness with a funny holiday-themed image or video will help them associate your brand with more than just your product. Finally, make social interactive. Respond in a timely manner to user questions and comments. It will help build your brand reputation and leave a positive impression on your audience. Storefront and website tips Whether customers are visiting

in person or virtually via a website, you want to give them an easy-tonavigate experience and plenty of purchasing options that meet their holiday shopping needs. First, categorize items as gifts on your website. For example, “gifts for your husband” or “gifts for kids.” Reflect this messaging in product copy and consider writing blogs that support gift ideas for specific audiences. Additionally, promote the upsell by offering packages of products and/or services in bundles. Second, hire a web developer and graphic designer to spruce up your website to reflect the essence of the holidays. Alternatively, use a DIY website builder that’s affordable and easy to use like GoDaddy. For physical stores, tasteful holiday decor can enhance the ambience and get shoppers in a festive state of mind. Finally, for brick-and-mortar purchases, consider offering complimentary gift wrapping. For online purchases, provide free shipping when a certain amount is purchased. With each day there’s another opportunity to upgrade your holiday marketing strategies, but you must start now. With these tips, you’ll have an edge on the competition. ‘Tis the season to see if your tread’s been bad or good The holidays are here again, and so is running, driving - around for things. Rushing to parties, picking up family at the airport, preparing dinners, and, of course, shopping. Whether it’s fighting for parking spaces at the mall or traveling over the river and through the woods, don’t overlook the four round pieces of rubber that are responsible for safely getting you from point A to point B - your tires. “People have a lot of to-do’s on their checklist during the holidays, but one thing they tend to forget is to check on the condition of their tires,” says Dan Guiney, director of technical services for Yokohama Tire Corp., maker of a variety of truck and car tires. “It’s something every driver should do.” “Tires must be replaced for traction considerations depending on anticipated roadway and weather driving conditions and by Federal regulation when the tread is worn to 2/32 of an inch groove depth

remaining. You want to prevent loss of traction which may result in skidding and hydroplaning,” says Guiney.” It’s hard to visualize what that acceptable tread depth looks like, so place a penny upside down into a tread groove. If the top part of Lincoln’s head is just starting to be covered, you’re driving with the very minimum amount of tread depth, 2/32nds. If driving conditions will be wet or snowy you may want to purchase new tires before the minimum levels to maximize traction performance. If heavy snow or ice is anticipated, winter tires are an excellent choice because they can provide considerably more winter traction than all-season tires. And because your all-season tires are taking a “winter vacation,” they’ll last longer. “Tire technology has come a very long way, resulting in tires that last longer and are more fuel efficient,” says Guiney. However, drivers still

have the responsibility to check their tires regularly to get the optimum performance out of them.” For the holiday season or the daily commute, driving smartly and maintaining your tires can save money at the gas station. Here are some of Guiney’s tips: * Keep your tires properly inflated. Once a month, when the tires are cold (at least three to four hours after the vehicle has been driven), check tire pressure with a reliable tire gauge. Be

sure the valve stems have a plastic or metal cap to keep dirt out and seal against water and foreign objects. * Slow down. All vehicles lose fuel economy at speeds above 55 mph. Driving 55 mph instead of 75 mph can reduce fuel costs up to 25 percent. Driving 65 mph instead of 75 mph can save up to 13 percent. * Tire alignment should be checked once a year. Misaligned tires lower mileage and creates unnecessary tire wear. -BPT

Small Plates for a Big Party This holiday season don’t let a main dish hog all the glory. Instead let guests feast on a festive spread of small plates and sides. Snack-size portions of a wide range of delicious dishes are the perfect solution for entertaining. A large, heavy meal can leave guests feeling lethargic. Keep your party lively with lighter bites that guests can nibble on throughout the night. Another advantage of a small plate menu is that guests will appreciate the chance to sample many flavors without fear of overindulging. Get your party planning started with these tips: • Keep dishes simple and put the focus on quality ingredients, such as naturally lactose and gluten free Jarlsberg cheese. Best known for the classic wedge available in original and smoked flavors, Jarlsberg cheese offers a mild, mellow, nutty and delicious taste that is perfect for any cheese board and pairing with meats of your choice. • Give traditional vegetable sides a special boost to make them party perfect. Basic asparagus gets a fresh twist with this Asparagus Tart, which blends savory Jarlsberg brand cheese and a pastry for a pretty presentation you can cut into squares before serving. • Plan your menu with the clock in mind. Choose foods that will taste great for the duration of your party without drying out or loosing flavor, such as this Tomato Gratin. • Keep cold dishes chilled by setting the serving bowl inside a larger bowl filled with ice (add some flair by tinting the ice or adding decorative accents). • Use burners to keep the heat on warm dishes, or simply rotate in fresh batches periodically. Give your holiday entertaining an extra boost this year with Jarlsberg Cheese’s Great Holiday Giveaway, which runs through Dec. 31 and offers prizes for holiday entertaining, including a DSLR camera as the

Page 28

grand prize and weekly charcuterie party kits. Learn more and enter (once per day) at Facebook.com/ Jarlsbergusa, and find more holiday entertaining recipes at jarlsberg.com. Asparagus Tart 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed 2 cups Jarlsberg cheese, shredded 1 pound asparagus 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves salt and pepper Heat oven to 400 F. Prepare baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll out puff pastry into 16-by10-inch rectangle, trimming uneven edges. Place on baking sheet. With knife, lightly score pastry dough 1 inch from edges to mark rectangle. Using fork, pierce dough inside markings at 1/2-inch intervals. Bake until golden, about 15 minutes. Remove pastry shell from oven and sprinkle with shredded cheese. Trim asparagus spears to fit crosswise inside pastry shell. Arrange in single layer over cheese, alternating ends and tips. Brush with oil, sprinkle thyme leaves and season with salt and pepper. Bake until spears are tender, about 20 minutes. Tomato Gratin 8 medium ripe tomatoes 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 4 garlic cloves, sliced 4 sprigs fresh thyme (or 4 basil leaves, chopped) salt and pepper, to taste 2 ounces toasted pine (pignoli) nuts 1/2 pound (8 ounces) grated Jarlsberg cheese Heat oven to 350 F. Cut tomatoes in half. In bowl, whisk together vinegar, olive oil, garlic, thyme, salt and pepper; gently mix in tomatoes. Transfer to ovenproof dish, turning tomatoes cut side up before baking 15 minutes.

When tomatoes are cool enough, remove skins before returning to baking dish. Sprinkle tomatoes with nuts and cheese. Return to oven and bake about 10 minutes, or until cheese turns golden and bubbly. Serve as bruschetta on sliced, toasted Italian bread or as a side dish to fish and meat.

Cheesy Mashed Potatoes 4 large baking potatoes, peeled and cut 1 cup Jarlsberg cheese 1 cup milk 1 container sour cream 1/2 cup butter 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper

Heat oven to 350 F. Place potatoes in large pot of salted water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer until tender. Drain and bring potatoes to food processor. In food processor, add cheese, milk, sour cream, butter, salt and pepper. Process all ingredients with potatoes until smooth. Pour mixture into baking pan and cover with tin foil. Bake 30 minutes. Uncover potatoes during last 10 minutes to allow browning. Sensational Platters Platters featuring savory finger foods are a flavorful and easy solution for holiday entertaining. Simply assemble ingredients, such as those listed below, on a large wooden or slate board and serve. Get creative by adding fig spreads, fresh fruit or other nibbles you enjoy, and don’t forget the toothpicks and napkins. Be sure to take the cheese out of the refrigerator at least an hour before serving to ensure that it is room temperature to bring out the ideal flavor. Never serve cheese cold. • Wedge or cubed Jarlsberg cheese • Assortment of whole grain crackers and crusty bread slices • Italian Genoa salami, coppa or your favorite charcuterie meats • Assorted olives, nuts and dried or fresh fruits
