Coto de Caza Equestrian Team Wins Thirty Ribbons at Oaks Competition ESI Stables Student Riders from Santa Margarita and Tesoro High Schools Gain Strides at 2017 Event By Karean L. Chapman Photos by John T. Chapman After a rain filled couple of weeks, with all odds against them, the sun appeared just in time for the (Orange County Interscholastic Equestrian League)3rd and 4th horse show weekend at The Oaks Blenheim show park. With little training working up to the show, due to bad weather, up and coming ESI’s Interscholastic Equestrian Team made strides as they worked their way up the show circuit. The league shows consist of several equestrian disciplines such as Hunter/Jumpers, Jumpers, Dressage, Gymkhana, and Western. Within each discipline there are several classes and divisions; freshman, novice, junior varsity, and varsity, each building in complexity and skill level. Competitors compete for their schools, as well as, their equestrian training facilities. Local student riders compete for several schools in Orange County. This year’s competitors are from Santa Margarita Catholic High School and Tesoro High School. The Orange County Interscholastic Equestrian League attracts public and private school student equestrians, K through 12th grade. Together they compete and promote their sport as an Interscholastic team activity. Starting out the day, grand prix trainer, and owner of ESI training stables, Katie Kelly, assistant trainer Colleen Ruscher, and up and coming OCIEL riding students to be, Amber, Audrey, and Regan supported their fellow competitors by cheering them on, and pitching in eagerly, to get all the horses and riders ready to show. First up was Darby Villareal, a sophomore at Santa Margarita Catholic High School, riding a beautiful pinto American warmblood named, Everlasting Touch Evie. The pair completed events in the junior varsity Hunter/Jumper classes winning 8 ribbons, placing 3rd in U/S Hunters. Teammate Cara Adams, a freshman of Santa Margarita Catholic High School, riding her bay, off the track thoroughbred, Desert Gem, won 9 ribbons, taking 2nd place in the freshman U/S Hunters division. Next up was Helena Champion, sophomore at Santa Margarita Catholic High School, soaring to new heights with her chestnut mount, off the racetrack thoroughbred, Can’t Catch Cole, bringing in 8 ribbons and a 1st place, blue ribbon win in the junior varsity Jumpers Speed Class. Following on in the junior varsity Jumpers class was Mikayla Chapman, senior at Tesoro High School, flying over the jumps on her dun, Irish Connemara pony, Lookout Volvic Page 2

ESI Training Stables Team: (Left - Right) Darby Villareal, Helena Champion, Colleen Ruscher, Audrey Villareal, Katie Kelly, Regan Gammon, Shayna Chapman, Mikayla Chapman, Cara Adams, Amber Gonzalez Rocket, collecting a total of nine ribbons. Winning the blue ribbon in the junior varsity jumpers classic, helped secure Mikayla’s overall Reserve Champion win on both days. Shayna Chapman, junior at Santa Margarita Catholic High School, sat confidently atop her pinto Dutch warmblood, Maestro Van Erpekom, as the pair acquired 4 ribbons together in their Dressage Tests A, B, and C. Katie Kelly of ESI Training Stables, Santa Margarita Catholic High School, and Tesoro High School were proud of the accomplishments their students achieved through bringing in a total of 30 ribbons. ESI Training Stables is a barn at Darby Villareal on Everlasting Touch Evie - Hunter/Jumpers the Coto Equestrian facility. Which has many horses from warmbloods, sport ponies and thoroughbreds with the ability to teach young children to adults. ESI trains riders, rehabilitates off-the-track ex racehorses, giving them new hope, new jobs, training, attention, care and much deserved love. Katie Kelly states, “My kids learn what it’s like to be true horsemen from the ground up.” ESI students learn how to groom, tack, care for and ride, not only their own horses, but all the horses in Katie’s program. This kind of enrichment is a rarity in the equestrian world today. The parents add, “We love the community that Katie has built from Mikayla Chapman on Lookout Volvic Rocket - Jumpers the kids to the adults, it is one big Recent and exciting news for ESI family!” Cara’s mom, Annie Adams played outdoors without the worries expressed, “Cara is learning what it of today’s demanding world. Shopping Guide for Red-Hot Valentine’s Day Dresses By Stephanie Haddad Tired of wearing the same old black dress every time you’ve got a hot date? This Valentine’s Day, you could be sizzling in a hot red dress instead. With the “little red dress” taking Hollywood (and everywhere else) by storm, there’s no time like a holiday dedicated to love to pick one up for yourself. How to Choose Your Little Red Dress Buying a dress, no matter what the color, does not have to be a difficult process. Know your body type, what flatters your shape, and have an idea what you’re looking for before you shop. Here’s some basic guidelines for common body types: Heavy body types should shop for a dress that creates symmetry in the body (either minimizing the top half or bottom half for balance). For a minimizing top, look for a scoop or v-neck design and some simple flare or draping on the bottom. Pear-shaped body types will benefit from a dress with some detail work on the top half and an a-line silhouette. Ellen Tracy makes a great dress in cherry red that is figure flattering. Hourglass shapes should be the easiest to dress and can wear nearly

any style. But if you choose to even out the curves, shop for a dress that doesn’t accentuate the waistline, like a sheath dress. Rectangular body shapes need a dress that adds some curvature, like a belted or cinched-waist dress. Wrap dresses, halters, and sheaths are also good at feminizing a boyish figure. Have some fun with a chic red wrap dress by TravelSmith or a printed floral in red by Diane von Furstenberg. Red-Hot Shopping Options There are a lot of options out there for anyone in the dress shopping market. Red dresses, as well, abound. Nearly every major brand name has a red dress, some in multiple designs, patterns, materials, and styles. To find the best choice for you, have your specifics in mind and start searching! Some of the hottest trends in dresses right now include unique necklines, lace and sheers, mixed fabrics, one-shoulder, wraps, and (still) maxi dresses. Have some fun with something sexy and smoldering or chic and elegant, the choice is yours. As long as it’s red, you’ll be catching eyes wherever you go!

5 Easy Ways to Say “I Love You” If gift-giving isn’t your strong suit, occasions like Valentine’s Day are likely to bring on stress and worry, but procrastinating will only serve to elevate your unease. Follow these steps to simplify your shopping, and while you may not come to love the task of finding the perfect gift, your loved one will undoubtedly appreciate your effort. Browse for ideas online. Many retailers offer special promotions and gift idea sections on their websites, so finding inspiration can be as easy as visiting the sites of your loved one’s favorite stores. There are also dozens of articles online to help get the ideas flowing. Searches such as “gifts for horse lovers” or “Valentine’s gifts for a new boyfriend” will reveal a long list of ideas to peruse. Keep it simple. Although the advertising industry works hard to convince consumers otherwise, Valentine’s Day isn’t really all about the bling. Sure, a pretty bauble is a welcome gift, but there are plenty of ways to show your affection that don’t require spending a month’s salary. A heartfelt card paired with a memento of a meaningful event or place in your relationship sends the same loving sentiment. Make it a (different) date. For many couples, navigating the demands of work, kids and life make spending time together a luxury. Instead of fighting crowds at busy restaurants on the official date, celebrate your love on a day of your own choosing, when you can relax and enjoy the time together without the pressure to rush through dessert so your table can be flipped for the next waiting couple. Give blooms a boost. A dozen

long-stem red roses is a beautiful gesture, but unless your intended rose receiver is a strictly traditional type, try adding a little spice to your floral arrangement. Go for a bouquet in her favorite color, or have the flowers arranged in a practical vessel she can reuse to remember the occasion, such as a cocktail shaker or a watering can. Go ahead, gift yourself. It may seem counter-intuitive, but finding a

gift you’ll enjoy may inspire an idea for your loved one. The trick is finding something you can share together, whether it’s tickets to a show or his and hers mugs for enjoying your favorite brew. Just be sure the item is something your intended will share your enthusiasm for, or you may as well go buy a blender. Find more ideas to simplify every occasion at eLivingToday.com.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts Begins Construction on Julianne and George Argyros Plaza and Center for Dance and Innovation

Construction has begun on Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ new Julianne and George Argyros Plaza and the Center for Dance and Innovation. The plaza has been named in recognition of Julia and George Argyros’ long-time support of the Center and a generous $13.5 million lead gift to the Center’s Next Act campaign. The many new features and amenities of the Argyros Plaza and Center for Dance and Innovation (CDI) will help to support an array of programs and performances offered on the plaza and by the CDI and Center Without Boundaries. These will enable the Center to significantly enhance its artistic programs, performances and venues while responding to the growing needs of a rapidly changing Orange County. John L. Ginger, Chairman of the Board, said, “We are so grateful that Julia and George believe in the importance of this plaza to the quality of life in our community. The Argyros Plaza will make an enormous impact on the way we serve and engage with our community and will offer new opportunities for the people from throughout Orange County to enjoy the Center. We are so grateful that Julia and George believe in the importance of this plaza and the performances, programs that people will enjoy here. We cannot thank them enough for supporting us and helping us to be the arts center of the future.” Center President Terrence W. Dwyer noted: “The Center has always been dedicated to providing the community with world-class performing arts and invaluable education programs. Now, with our three initiatives moving forward – the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza, the Center for Dance and Innovation and our Center Without Boundaries – we will leverage the arts in new and innovative ways to make a real difference to the future of our wonderfully diverse community. We Page 8

are honored that Julia and George support the Center’s goals and are helping to make them happen.” Designed by the firm of Michael Maltzan Architecture, the Argyros Plaza will be a new public gathering place, welcoming and attractive to all of the county’s diverse communities, offering exceptional year-round programs and performances as well as guest amenities that include a café, public stage, shaded seating areas, WiFi and enhanced lighting and sound. A visually striking grand staircase will connect Segerstrom Hall to the Argyros Plaza below. The Center for Dance and Innovation, which includes the Judy Morr Theater, studios of the American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School and new school for children with physical and cognitive disabilities, will feature its own sweeping entranceway and public patio for socializing. Michael Maltzan said, “Architecture is at its best when it’s creating a spirited, inclusive place for community. The Argyros Plaza, complemented by the spaces of the Center for Dance and Innovation, is poised to do just that. To create a flexible, inviting, beautiful, and utterly unique gathering space for the entire community of Orange County. I am honored to be working with Segerstrom Center for the Arts and Julia Argyros on this extraordinary project.” The Center’s three key initiatives launched in August 2015 – the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza, the Center for Dance and Innovation and the Center without Boundaries – complement and enhance Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ annual seasons of world-class performances in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, Segerstrom Hall, Samueli Theater and the Judy Morr Theater.  Julianne and George Argyros Plaza, designed by the renowned firm of Michael Maltzan Architecture, reimagines the existing Arts Plaza as

a welcoming public gathering place and dynamic town square deeply engrained in the community offering a host of new guest amenities, a public stage and free events and performances. Programs and new amenities will make the Argyros Plaza accessible and attractive to all residents of Orange County. Many of the programs will be initiated by and support the goals of the county’s diverse communities and complement the dynamic new Center Without Boundaries programs;  Center Without Boundaries program, an innovative model for civic engagement that focuses on responding to needs of individual and diverse communities by forging strategic partnerships between the Center and non-cultural groups throughout the county. Among the organizations with whom the Center is already partnering in its plans to become a ‘center for the future’ include El Centro Cultural de Mexico, The Wooden Floor, Alzheimer’s OC, CHOC Hospital, Chapman University, University of California Irvine, United Cerebral Palsy and The KIDA School and Orangewood’s Samueli Academy;  Center for Dance and Innovation supports Segerstrom Center ’s flagship artistic programs, while

acting as a catalyst for initiatives that celebrate innovation and creativity. In addition to the American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School, the Center’s programs include a dance and music school for children with physical and cognitive disabilities, the commissioning of new ballets, dance training in multiple genres, Center partnerships with the high-tech, biotech/entrepreneur community and others, offering the community new ways of engaging with the performing arts through a broad array of on-site, off-campus and online programs. “These programs are being made possible through the generous support of many individuals such as Julia and George Argyros,” said Dwyer. “They are making it possible for the Center to offer not only world class performances, but also innovative programs such as technology-based initiatives, residencies by renowned dance companies and beneficial partnerships with other not-for-profit groups focused on engaging with the community. Through this trio of projects, the Center is expanding its ability to contribute positively to the future of Orange County.” 600 Town Center Drive Costa Mesa, CA 92626 T (714) 556-2121 F (714) 556-8984 SCFTA.org

TAX PLANNING STRATEGIES FOR 2016 FROM KIM COYLE CPA

Dear Client; As the end of the year approaches, it’s a good time to think of planning strategies that will help lowering your taxes for 2016. My goal is for you to leverage your tax deductions and credit to the fullest extent. I want to briefly discuss five different strategies that can be powerful tools in lowering your tax bill. And the really great part is that each of these strategies is easy to understand and implement. Here are the strategies: 1. Prepay Expenses The IRS allows cash-basis taxpayers to prepay and deduct qualifying expenses up to 12 months in advance (through December 2017) without challenge, adjustment, or change by the IRS. For a cash-basis taxpayer, qualifying expenses include lease payment on business vehicles, rent payments on offices and machinery, and business and malpractice insurance premiums. This is a great way to pump up your 2016 deductions with expenses you will eventually pay anyway. 2. Stop Billing Customers and Patients An easy strategy for reducing your taxable income for this year is to stop billing your customers until December 31, 2016. Customers, patients, and insurance companies generally don’t pay until billed. Not billing customers and patients is a time-tested tax planning strategy that business owner have used successfully for years. 3. Buy Office Equipment With Section 179, you can write off up to $500,000 of office equipment in 2016. Qualifying Section 179 purchases include new and used personal property such as equipment, computers, desks, chairs, and certain qualifying vehicles. To qualify for Section 179, you need to both buy the items and put them in business service on or before midnight December 31, 2016. 4. Use Your Credit Cards If you are a sole proprietor, the day you charge a purchase to your business or personal credit card is the day the expense is deductible, Therefore, as a proprietor, consider using your credit cards to buy office supplies and other business necessities. If you operate your business as a corporation, and if the corporation has a credit card in the corporate name, the same rule applies: the date of charge is the date of deduction for the corporation. But if you operate your business as a corporation and you are the personal owner of the credit card, the corporation must reimburse you if you want the corporation to realize the tax deduction, and that happens on the date of reimbursement. Thus, submit your expense report and have your corporation make its reimbursements to you before midnight on December 31. 5. Don’t Assume You Are Taking Too Many Deductions Make sure your record all of your rightful deductions for 2016, because if your business deductions exceed your business income, you have a tax loss for the year. After a few modifications to the loss, tax law calls this a “net operating loss,” or an NOL. The good news is that tax law allows you to carry back the NOL for two years and get instant refunds from taxes previously paid. If, after going back for two years, you still have unused losses, you can carry them forward for up to 20 years. In other words, you have a 22-year window during which you can realize the benefits of your deductions. So always document your expenses in order to get your rightful deductions. Please do not hesitate contact me if you want to discuss in greater depth any of the strategies outlined above.

Tilly’s Life Center (TLC) held its 2nd Annual “I Am Giving” Gala in a generous check for $75,000 from the Knights and Ladies of the Knights. Irvine, where attendees rocked their best black and white attire, dined on scrumptious food and raised over $260,000 to support TLC’s mission: “to inspire today’s youth to reach their full potential as productive, kind, happy and responsible individuals.” Hosted by seven-time Emmy award-winning host, Roy Firestone, the gala kicked-off with a white and pink carpet entrance leading guests into a lively cocktail party complete with hors d’oeuvres and drinks, a TLC themed photo booth and silent auction. “We’re truly thankful for the incredible turnout at our 2nd Annual ‘I Am Giving’ Gala and for the support of our sponsors, volunteers and friends who made this event so special,” said founder of Tilly’s Life Center, Tilly Levine. “It’s amazing to see our community come together and support our efforts to provide all teens with effective life tools, helping them acquire the self-confidence and self-respect needed to build a positive mind and make better choices.” Following the cocktail party, guests made their way to the main event room Tilly Levine and Roy Firestone at TLC’s 2nd Annual “I Am Giving” Gala clapping their hands to the beat of Pharrell’s “Happy” song that coincided with a video montage introducing the dynamic and inspiring Roy Firestone as Master of Ceremonies – leaving the room filled with high spirits and positive energy. PACIFIC SYMPHONY TO MAKE ITS CARNEGIE HALL DEBUT FOR A SPECIAL PROGRAM DEDICATED TO ONE OF TODAY’S MOST FASCINATING AND PRE-EMINENT COMPOSERS, PHILIP GLASS

Pacific Symphony, led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, has been invited to perform for the very first time at one of the world’s most prestigious venues, Carnegie Hall in New York City, in honor of one of today’s leading composers, Philip Glass. Joining them will be Pacific Chorale, also appearing at Carnegie Hall for the first time. One of America’s most revered composers, Glass is Carnegie Hall’s 2017-18 composer-in-residence, where he holds the Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair. With this seasonlong residency by Glass, Carnegie joined a yearlong celebration of the composer’s 80th birthday, presenting performances that feature his classics and premieres. As part of the residency, orchestras from across the United States were invited to submit programs featuring important works by Glass in illuminating contexts. Pacific Symphony and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra were the two orchestras chosen, in part by Glass himself, to perform during Carnegie’s upcoming season. Both orchestras emerged among competitors with what Carnegie called “very compelling programs.” “Being invited to Carnegie Hall is a great honor,” says Pacific Symphony’s Music Director Carl St.Clair. “And, being invited to this world-renowned concert hall to celebrate the birthday of my dear friend, Philip Glass, makes our debut there all the more meaningful. Further, to perform in his honor a work that Pacific Symphony commissioned, premiered and recorded, along with celebrating his long relationship with Ravi Shankar with works he co-composed with him, makes the entire occasion powerful.” “Artistic excellence and innovation are at the core of Pacific Symphony’s identity,” commented Symphony President John Forsyte, “so it is gratifying to have this opportunity to showcase at Carnegie Hall a work commissioned by Pacific Symphony that is emblematic of our strong commitment to new music. It is also rewarding that the Pacific Chorale, a frequent commissioning partner and an important force on the Orange County cultural scene, will join us in presenting the New York premiere of ‘The Passion of Ramakrishna,’ during this special festival celebrating the genius of Philip Glass.” Pacific Symphony makes this significant debut on Saturday, April 21, 2018, when Glass’ famous collaborations with the Indian sitar master Ravi Shankar will be honored during a program that spotlights “Meetings Along the Edge” from “Passages,” a piece Glass recorded with Shankar, whom Glass first met in India in 1965. The eightminute movement was composed by Glass on a theme of Shankar in 1990. Also on the program is the 40-minute “Concerto No. 3 for Sitar and Orchestra” by Shankar, which was written on commission from the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and premiered in 2009 by his daughter, Anoushka Shankar, who will perform with Pacific Symphony at Carnegie Hall. The final work on the program will be the New York premiere of “The Passion of Ramakrishna”—a work

of quiet intensity and unforgettable power—scored for vocal soloists, chorus and large orchestra to celebrate the life of this incredible Hindu holy man. Mixing Eastern and Western traditions, Glass’ heroic musical homage paints an exquisite symphonic and choral picture of India emerging from centuries of foreign domination. The epic, 45-minute piece was commissioned by Pacific Symphony and given its worldpremiere on Sept. 16, 2006, as part of the grand opening of the orchestra’s then-new home, the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa, Calif. Gramophone magazine reviewed the Symphony’s 2012 recording of the work, praising it as Glass’ “most thoughtful and inventive recent piece.” Local Pacific Symphony enthusiasts will have the opportunity to hear the orchestra perform this concert in Orange County on April 12-14, 2018. Single tickets to the Carnegie Hall performance go on sale August 28 at CarnegieHall.org. In addition, Pacific Symphony will announce a patron trip to cheer on the orchestra in New York later this spring. “In creating our season-long residency with Philip Glass, we saw a great opportunity to ask orchestras from across the country to suggest programs that put his symphonic works in illuminating context,” says Clive Gillinson, executive and artistic director of Carnegie Hall. “Pacific Symphony’s program stood out as one of the most compelling, and we were further impressed by the orchestra’s strong commitment to performing and recording Philip’s works. We’re delighted to present the orchestra in their Carnegie Hall debut next season and look forward to an evening of great musical discovery.” Glass, who spent a great deal of time traveling in India during the middle years of his life, says he had long known about the Gospel of Ramakrishna, which he calls “a classic book, written in a beautiful style.” Along with Nadia Boulanger, Glass claims that Ravi Shankar is the most important person with whom he has ever worked. The composer says: “It was my great luck to meet a master of a great tradition of global music. One of Ravi’s great achievements is the way he extrapolates rhythmic structure into the overall structure of a composition. Ravi is a complete master of that.” This momentous tribute to the 19th-century Indian mystic (who famously said, “Every religion is a path to God”) will feature the Pacific Chorale and guest soloists Elissa Johnston, soprano, as Sarada Devi; Christòpheren Nomura, baritone, as “M”; Donovan Singletary, bassbaritone as Dr. Sarkar; I-Chin Feinblatt as First Devotee and Nicholas Preston as Second Devotee (both Orange County residents and members of Pacific Chorale). Johnston was recently cited by the Chicago Tribune for the “exquisite beauty, sensitivity and precision” of her singing, while Nomura has been hailed as one of classical music’s “rising stars’ by The Wall Street Journal; he returns to the role he sang during Pacific Symphony’s premiere of “The Passion of Ramakrishna” in

2006. “Philip has played an important role in Pacific Symphony’s life, especially since we opened the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall with his ‘Passion of Ramakrishna,’ ” says St.Clair, “and the relationship just grew from there. His musical voice is distinct, unique and reflects the deep spirituality of Philip, the man and the humanitarian.” In 2011, Glass became the focus of Pacific Symphony’s 11th American Composers Festival (ACF)—“The Passion of Philip Glass”—the firstever Southern California Philip Glass Festival, presented in partnership with Long Beach Opera. The festival included not only the composer’s music (concert and opera) but accompanying events (films, lectures, discussions), all of which probed deeply into Glass and his music. The unifying theme for ACF that year was the influence that India’s music and philosophy had on Glass. The Festival revisited “The Passion of Ramakrishna” and presented complementary works from Glass’ oeuvre, with the goal of bringing this modern master to the greater attention of music patrons in Southern California. “I had wanted Philip Glass as our featured composer for ACF in spring 2006,” says St.Clair. “It was the third year ACF looked at the non-western influences on American composers in the 20th-21st centuries and he was thinking of doing a largescale work based on the life of the Ramakrishna—but there wasn’t enough time for him to complete it. So it premiered for our opening of the hall in September 2006. I have always felt the work deserved to be repeated again in the future.” There are myriad reasons why Glass is worthy of so much attention, beginning with the fact that he has made a tremendous impact on the American musical vocabulary. He has written in numerous different genres, drawing inspiration from a multitude of sources, while retaining an immediately identifiable style. All of this plays a part in St.Clair’s and Pacific Symphony’s lengthy history with the composer. “I first met Philip in the early 1980s at the Cabrillo Festival,” recalls St.Clair. “It was Dennis Russell Davies who introduced us.” Glass was the guest composer that summer and St.Clair conducted a couple of his orchestral works at that festival. They enjoyed an immediate and strong personal connection and St.Clair recalls that

week with deep fondness. “I am a big, big fan with utmost respect for him as composer and friend.” It is no wonder that this cultural icon, reaching across generations and genres, even beyond the world of music, has attracted the attention of so many. His wide-ranging collaborations with artists from every discipline—including choreographer Twyla Tharp, poet Allen Ginsberg and filmmaker Martin Scorsese—have fascinated opera, dance, pop and rock audiences for more than half a century. His catalog of visionary works, known for both hypnotic and dramatic structures and shapeshifting motifs, are landmarks of a mid-century compositional movement that pivoted from serialism and atonality toward a more direct and rhythmic style. Glass was born in 1937 and grew up in Baltimore, Md. He studied at the University of Chicago, The Juilliard School and the Aspen Music Festival and School with Darius Milhaud. He later moved to Europe, where he studied with the legendary pedagogue Boulanger (who also taught Aaron Copland, Virgil Thomson and Leonard Bernstein), returning to New York to work closely with the sitar virtuoso/composer, Shankar, and study with Shankar’s legendary tabla player, Alla Rakha. In 1967, he formed the Philip Glass Ensemble— seven musicians playing keyboards and a variety of woodwinds, amplified and fed through a mixer. The new musical style evolved by Glass was eventually dubbed “minimalism.” Glass himself never liked the term and preferred to speak of himself as a composer of “music with repetitive structures.” There has been nothing “minimalist” about his musical output. In the past 25 years, Glass has composed more than 20 operas, large and small; 11 symphonies; two piano concertos; concertos for violin, piano, timpani, and saxophone quartet and orchestra; soundtracks to films, ranging from new scores for the stylized classics of Jean Cocteau to Errol Morris’ documentary about former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara; string quartets; and a growing body of work for solo piano and organ. He has collaborated with Paul Simon, Linda Ronstadt, YoYo Ma and Doris Lessing, among many others. He presents lectures, workshops and solo keyboard performances around the world, and continues to appear regularly with the Philip Glass Ensemble.

A resolution you can keep all year: The one-day identity checkup

Exercise. Lose the weight. Answer every incoming email. Those are the hard kinds of New Year’s resolutions, because you have to think about them every day for the rest of the year. Many are forgotten long before Valentine’s Day. But here’s one important resolution, one you can fulfill today and easily keep all year: protect your identity. Identity theft is a fast-growing crime, but there are ways to reduce your chances of being a victim. The identity theft protection experts at LifeLock recommend doing these five quick things today to help keep your identity safer all year long: Use safe passwords Are you among the people who use simple passwords like “123456” or “qwerty” or “abc123” to protect your personal information? Or even the word “password” itself? Many people do, so identity thieves can often break in just by trying the most popular passwords. To create a safer password, avoid using words that are in the dictionary. And stay away from your own personal information, like a nickname, pet’s

name or birthdate. One option is to come up with a memorable phrase that includes numbers and symbols, and use the first letter of each word. “My Tigers are Number One in Football!” might become “MTaN1iF!” - a good example because it uses capital letters, lower-case letters, a number and a symbol. Use multiple passwords Stop using the same password for every account. Several big companies and websites have recently had their users’ personal information stolen by hackers. If your password for one site is compromised, and you use the same password for your bank and credit accounts, it’s much easier for a thief to get into all of them. At least have a different password for each account that has personal or financial information. And consider using a password-management program, which lets you set more cryptic passwords for each site you visit and control them with one master password. Stash that Social Security card Do you carry your Social Security card in your purse or wallet? Don’t. You may, on a rare occasion, need to show a Social Security card to an employer or a government agency. Aside from those days, keep it locked up in a safe place. Your Social Security number is a thief’s ticket to everything from opening new accounts in your name to stealing your tax refund. Don’t run the risk of losing it. Protect your mail Do your bank statements, credit card bills and utility invoices arrive by mail? If your mailbox is outside your house, thieves can take those bills and collect personal information that helps them

steal your identity. And once those documents are in your house and no longer needed, they can be stolen from a trash can or recycling bin. First, if your mail is delivered outside your home, install a locked mailbox. And use a shredder, or the shredding services offered by local shipping stores and some credit unions, to destroy documents once they’re no longer needed. But you can also take steps to keep that paperwork from ever arriving at your home in the first place. Have bills sent to you electronically; you’ll get them by email, save paper, reduce clutter and never have to worry about stolen mail or shredding. Opt out of credit card and insurance offers by visiting www.optoutprescreen.com. And dramatically reduce the amount of unsolicited mail you receive by opting out of junk mail at www. dmachoice.org. Be prepared for a loss If your wallet or purse is stolen, you’ll want to cancel all of your credit and debit cards before they can be misused. Keep a copy of each of your cards, or use a digital wallet program like LifeLock Wallet, which is available for your smartphone from the iOS and Android app stores. It gives you instant access to copies of your cards and also helps you track your balances, monitor transactions and cancel cards that are lost or stolen. Do these things today and you can proudly declare that you’ll keep at least one New Year’s resolution all year long: Protecting your identity. You can learn more about identity theft, and ways to keep you and your family safe, from the Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer. ftc.gov and from LifeLock at www.LifeLock.com/ education. - (BPT)

The History of Valentine’s Day: Who was St. Valentine? By Scott Brodie This history of Valentine’s Day is shrouded in mystery. While every February 14, Valentine’s Day, couples send romantic Valentines, no one knows the true history of Valentine’s Day. Many believe the history of Valentine’s Day can be found in the question, “Who was Saint Valentine?” The Roman Catholic Church has three saints named Valentine, or Valentinus. Of these three, the history of Valentine’s Day supposedly honors the first Saint Valentine. So, who was Saint Valentine? Saint Valentine was a third-century priest in Rome. He was martyred. Any further answer to, “Who was Saint Valentine?,” is speculation. Yet, there are three theories about the history of Valentine’s Day. Each attempts to answer, “Who was Saint Valentine?” Who Was Saint Valentine? A Priest Marrying Couples. According to this theory on the history of Valentine’s Day, Saint Valentine was a priest during Emperor Claudius II’s reign. Because Claudius II believed single men were better soldiers than married men, he outlawed marriage for young men. Saint Valentine did not adhere to Claudius II’s proclamation, however, and continued to perform marriages in secret. When he was

discovered, Saint Valentine was imprisoned and sentenced to death. Who Was Saint Valentine? A Priest Freeing Christians. Another theory about the history of Valentine’s Day contends that Saint Valentine was sentenced to death for free Christians from Roman prisons. This is the least romantic history of Valentine’s Day, but it portrays Saint Valentine as a heroic and strong figure. Who Was Saint Valentine? The First Valentine. According to this romantic theory of the history of Valentine’s Day, Saint Valentine sent the first valentine. He supposedly fell in love while imprisoned. Perhaps it was the jailor’s daughter who he loved. Whoever the lady was, he sent her a letter signed, “From your Valentine.” The truth is, no one can answer, “Who was Saint Valentine?” Since it remains unknown, the question for today is not, “Who was Saint Valentine?” Rather the question is, “Who is Saint Valentine now?” Whoever he was, Saint Valentine is remembered as a strong, heroic and romantic figure. It is no wonder lovers have been sending love letters in his name, as valentines, ever since the Middle Ages.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code.
