The Westminster Kennel Clubs Westminster Week 2018
Photo by Jack Grassa The Westminster Kennel Club and American Kennel Club partnered once again to bring dog and cat lovers a fun-filled, action-packed, fan-favorite day during Westminster Week 2018. Meet & Compete, featuring the 5th Annual Masters Agility Championship at Westminster and the 9th AKC Meet the Breeds®, presented by Purina Pro Plan, returned to Manhattan on Feb. 10, 2018 at Piers 92 and 94. Masters Agility Championship at Westminster The Masters Agility Championship at Westminster once again featured some of the country’s greatest canine athletes and their handlers as they faced a challenging obstacle course of jumps, tunnels, weave poles, and more, in entertaining races against the clock. The entry is limited to 330 dogs that have attained Master agility titles (MX and MXJ, or MXP and MJP) at the time of entry, virtually guaranteeing a top-performing field. The Agility competition was divided into five height classes - 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 inches, which refer to the height of the jumps in that class. Dogs competed in the class appropriate for their size. At Westminster, each dog competed in two qualifying rounds – a Standard Agility course and a Jumpers
with Weaves course. Scoring for eligibility to the Championship round was the combined actual running time of both runs, plus any faults (refusal/ run-out, wrong course, table fault, failure) and course time faults. Dogs were placed in order of the lowest combined score within their true AKC jump height. The twelve dogs from each height class with the lowest combined scores moved on to the televised Championship round Saturday evening, creating a field of 60 finalists competing for the coveted title of Westminster Kennel Club Masters Agility Champion. The championship course was a hybrid of the qualifying rounds and ran as a ‘time to beat’ course, where the first dog set the baseline time for the subsequent competitors. The Masters Agility Championship at Westminster included AKC- registered purebred dogs, mixed breeds enrolled in the AKC’s Canine Partners program, Miscellaneous breeds not yet eligible for conformation competition, Foundation Stock Service recorded breeds, and Purebred Alternative Listing dogs (purebred dogs that cannot be fully AKC registered). Agility judges for 2018 were Mr. Don Farage of Bartlett, Tennessee and Mr. David Powell of Auzielle, Occitanie, France.
AKC Meet the Breeds® This event offered attendees the unique opportunity to meet and play with more than 200 different dog and cat breeds and allows dog lovers to learn about responsible pet ownership and what breed is right for their lifestyle by visiting elaborately decorated booths depicting fun elements of each breed’s history. Attendees were encouraged to learn from the on-site experts themselves – breeders, enthusiasts, trainers and groomers – who can share what sets their breed apart from every other unique breed. Imaginology will power young imaginations at OC Fair & Event Center
With its cool steampunk theme and lots of hands-on activities, Imaginology brings free, familyfriendly fun with a focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) to OC Fair & Event Center April 13-15, 2018. This exciting, three-day exploration of STEAM is open Friday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free and most activities are included. Parking is free on Friday; $8 on Saturday and Sunday. Friday is field trip day and is open to the public. Schools and large groups of 10 or more are encouraged to register, but it is not required. Imaginology is the perfect place for curious people of all ages to discover the opportunities available in science, technology, engineering, arts and math fields. Students are encouraged to explore the possibilities as they learn by doing at a variety of workshops and exhibits. Food will be available for sale at the event. 2018 Law Enforcement and Firefighters Annual Appreciation Award Dinner Story and Photos by Mike Klinger Mission Viejo Saddleback Valley Elks 2444 hosted their 18th Annual Law Enforcement and Firefighters Appreciation Awards Ceremony Saturday night for outstanding contributions to our communities. Deputy of the Year and Firefighter of the Year awards were distributed to distinguished service in the cities of Mission Viejo. Laguna Hills, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Beach, San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, Dana Point, Lake Forest and Laguna Niguel. Mission Viejo Mayor, Ed Sachs, took the podium and stated, “I would like to thank the Elks Lodge for its continuing commitment of honoring our Law Enforcement and Firefighters in our communities. It is a great opportunity to acknowledge all their efforts for keeping us safe”. Joining Mayor Ed Sachs at the annual event was Dana Point Mayor Richard Viczorek and Lake Forest Mayor Dr. Jim Gardner. Lodge President, Mike Long, opened the ceremony and welcomed all the service personnel and their families and guests. Master of Ceremonies for the eighteenth year, Dennis Keffer PER, outlined the evening festivities and got the show on the road. Volunteer Girl Scout Troops #261 and #1383 began serving the guests a wonderful dinner of filet mignon sided with garlic mashed potatoes and blanched green beans followed by dessert of appleberry crisp. Dinner was prepared and plated by the Lodge’s all volunteer staff. Following dinner, it was time to knowledge the special efforts of our Lodge guests. Captain Ray Diggins introduced Officer of the Year Shaun Conner from the California Highway Patrol. Shaun is a 5-year veteran of the CHP. Lt. Carl Bulanek honored San Juan Capistrano Deputy of the Year Andrew Ayala, an Orange County native and a 6-year veteran in our armed forces. Batt. Chief Steve Edwards acknowledged OC Fire Authority Battalion 7 Firefighter of the Year Chris Litton, a member of FEMA and a Rope Rescue Specialist. The City of Aliso Viejo Deputy of the Year is Tristan Key. She was presented her award by Exalted Ruler Mike Long and Sgt. David Lee. Motorcycle Officer Joseph Bucaro was honored as City of Laguna Hills Deputy of the Year by Sgt. Matt Prince. Joseph is also trained as a lifeguard and works as a Sheriff IT Specialist, updating and linking communication procedures from patrol units and motor officers to dispatch. A graduate of Stanford University, OCFA Battalion 4, Firefighter Jeremy Bart received Firefighter of the Year award from Battalion Chief Mike Page 16
Conteras. Jeremy also played a key role in supporting the victims of Hurricane Harvey in Houston. Deputy Jaime Cuadras was honored as Deputy of the Year for the City of San Clemente by Lt. Mike Peters and Deputy Justin Smallwood as Deputy of the Year for the City of Dana Point presented by Sgt. Rich Himmel. As part of the Narcotic and Gang Task Force for the City of Lake Forest, Lt. Brad Valentine presented Deputy of the Year to Robert Blackburn. Firefighter Daniel Tieman of OCFA Battalion 6 (San Clemente, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano) was honored as Firefighter of the Year by Division Chief Rob Capobianco. Division Chief Capobianco accepted the OCFA Battalion 7 (Trabuco Canyon) award for Reserve Firefighter of the Year Eric Sniadoski. Eric splits his time as medical assistant at Mission Hospital and a Reserve Firefighter. Deputy of the Year for the City of Laguna Niguel is Nicole Laza, a criminal investigator and member of Special Enforcement Team, presented by Lt. Matt McDaniel. Nicole’s husband, Jason, was 2016 Deputy of the Year. The City of Rancho Santa Margarita is proud to honor Deputy Andres Briceno as Deputy of the Year. Lt. Luke South presented the award to Andres, a Child Safety Specialist. Deputy Greg Fisher received Deputy of the Year from Lt. Quyen Vuong for the City of Mission Viejo. Greg is a lead Training Officer and an avid pilot. Lt. Mitch Wang, South East Operations, honored Deputies Jay Casas and Ryan Durham as Deputies of the Year, patrolling the areas of Ladera Ranch, Coto de Caza and Las Flores. In 2016, Crissy Teichmann (paramedic) was promoted to Captain for the Laguna Beach Fire Department and received Firefighter of the Year from Division Chief Kirk Summers. Thank you to Harvey Boelts PDDGER for his continued excellence in organizing this annual event. And to everyone who volunteered to help set-up early Saturday morning, to our chefs that prepared a delicious dinner and all other Elk volunteers that made our event possible. We cannot do it without you. The Mission Viejo/Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge #2444 is celebrating 49 years of service to Saddleback Valley Communities. It is one of 10 lodges in the Orange Coast District of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) whose headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois. Hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the luncheon was attended by nearly 800 guests and honored Orange County’s top philanthropists, business leaders and individuals at the City National Grove of Anaheim. AFP Orange County Chapter is one of 250 chapters with 30,000 members that celebrate National Philanthropy Day across the world. Among those making it happen were NPD-OC Co-Chairs Julia Foster and Jane Hansen. AFP-OC President Keegan Bell presented a $2,500 check from the association to Outstanding Youth honoree, 12-year-old Grace Cross, who designated the money to one of her favorite charities, Olive Crest. Bell also presented Cross with a $1,000 check from AFP-OC’s Scholarship Fund for her continuing development and education. Cross, who was honored for establishing a thriving Girl Scout cookie giveaway program for deserving charities who help kids and families, said, “Everyone is able to give something, no matter how big or small. It all makes an impact on our community.” The honorees were presented a beautifully crafted hand-blown heart sculpture, created by master glassblower John Barber of Laguna Beach. Elizabeth and Tom Tierney, who were last year’s NPD-OC Legacy Award honorees, were Honorary Chairs, while returning to handle the host duties for the event were PBS So Cal’s Maria Hall-Brown and KTLA Channel 5’s Henry DiCarlo. Newport Beach resident Doug Freeman, whose resourcefulness in 1986 established the special day of philanthropy in cities across the country, is an event mainstay and continues to be an inspiration. The judging committee, led by Co-Chairs Janet Ray and John Christensen, reviewed more than 100 nominations for the honors. Bell said the net proceeds of $30,000 will advance AFP Orange County’s work to provide a leading-edge network of training, education and advocacy for fundraising professionals dedicated to making a growing difference in our community. 2017 National Philanthropy Day Orange County Outstanding Honorees: OUTSTANDING PHILANTHROPISTS - Suzanne and James Mellor Suzanne and James Mellor are lifelong supporters of the arts, beginning in Washington D.C. and continuing in Orange County, particularly Laguna Beach, through The Laguna Playhouse and the Laguna College of Art and Design. OUTSTANDING PHILANTHROPIC GROUP- Women’s Philanthropy Fund of Orange County United Way. The Women’s Philanthropy Fund members work to empower women and children to realize their full potential, break the cycle of poverty and create generational change. Anne Shih’s exceptional leadership in fundraising, acquiring major exhibitions and growing membership at Bowers Museum for 21 years has brought the museum great success. Since cofounding the Illumination Foundation in 2007, Paul Cho and Paul Leon have provided targeted, interdisciplinary services to the most vulnerable homeless population in the county. Here’s an easy antidote: Sit quietly for a few moments, taking full-body, deep breaths through your nose. “I like to visualize the ocean, and imagine the sound of the its big crashing waves with every breath I take,” she says. 5. Relieve stress by going outside. The benefits of going outside in the winter is not only good for our bodies, being outside chases away the winter blahs, as research has told us.
