ca pi str a no u nified scho ol d i st r i ct offers choice of schools
Beginning Wednesday, February 1, students in the Capistrano Unified School District can apply to one of 43 different academic programs during the annual School of Choice period. The School of Choice process provides parents with the ability to apply to a school outside of their child’s attendance area on a space-available basis. This year, there are 43 schools with space to accept School of Choice students. Detailed information describing each school and its academic offerings is available online at http://capousdca.schoolloop.com/soc, and many of our schools participate in social media. Parents are also encouraged to contact their schools of interest and make an appointment to tour the campus and visit the classrooms. School of Choice applications will be available online at http://capousdca.schoolloop.com/soc, at local schools, and at the District Education Center, 33122 Valle Road, San Juan Capistrano. The application period begins Wednesday, February 1 and ends Friday, March 3. Completed applications must be turned in between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. either at the school to which the child is applying or at the District Education Center, 33122 Valle Rd.,

San Juan Capistrano, CA. Online applications must also be submitted by March 3. In the event there are more applicants than openings at a particular school, students will be selected by lottery. Notifications will be received by May 1, 2017. There are many educational options in CUSD, including Orange County’s only Mandarin language immersion program; the county’s only public International Baccalaureate (IB) candidate school for students in kindergarten through 8th grade; innovative Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics programs and partnering with local industry and federal government agencies; and online schools for students who may thrive in an independent setting. The District’s online programs are not part of the School of Choice process, but are still accepting applications. Those programs include California Preparatory Academy, the District’s online independent study high school; Capistrano Virtual School, which offers online curriculum to students in kindergarten through 8th grades; and Capistrano Home School for families who prefer to educate their children with the support of credentialed teachers. The students visited the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, and The Museum of Modern Art, the MET, skated in Rockefeller Center, walked around Central Park and saw the Lion King on Broadway. Segerstrom Center Welcomes Rita Wilson and Friends with All New Production of Liner Notes: Songwriters, Stories and Music Segerstrom Center for the Arts welcomes Rita Wilson, the talented actress, film producer and Broadway star, who brings her vocal and songwriting talents to Samueli Theater in her Center debut with Liner Notes: Songwriters, Stories and Music, on Friday, February 10, 2017. Special guests and notable songwriters Billy Steinberg, Holly Knight and Desmond Child join Wilson in this intimate evening performing songs and sharing stories behind their most memorable music. Tickets start at $59 and will go on sale Sunday, December 18 at 10 a.m. and be available online at www.SCFTA.org, at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 556-2787. Rita Wilson is well-known as an actress (It’s Complicated, Sleepless in Seattle, a recurring role in CBS’s The Good Wife, HBO’s award-winning series, Girls, and most recently on Broadway in Larry David’s smash hit, Fish in the Dark), and as a film producer (Mamma Mia!, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and its sequel, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, for which she co-wrote and performed Even More Mine) but her first love is music. In May 2012, Wilson realized a lifelong dream with the debut of her solo album AM/FM. The album, released by Decca/Verve Records, is an intimate, elegant and beautifully sung collection of covers of her favorite songs from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Since the release of AM/FM, Wilson has been focusing on a new component of her musical career as a songwriter. In March 2016, she released her self-titled second album, showcasing her skill for creating insightful, eloquent singer-songwriter pop music that is etched with stunning honesty. For two years prior to the release, Wilson worked with a host of the finest award-winning and bestselling songwriters and producers in both Los Angeles and Nashville. This new material was prominently featured in her sold-out two-week residency at the famed Café Carlyle in New York City. “Ms. Wilson has a catch in her voice that conveys yearning and potential heartbreak behind a façade of cheer. As a stage performer, she is gregarious and forthright; a natural entertainer,” said The New York Times. In June 2016, Wilson toured with Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famers Chicago, one of the bestselling bands of all time, with more than 100 million albums sold. Billy Steinberg co-wrote (with Tom Kelly) five #1 singles on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, including “Like A Virgin” (Madonna), “True Colors” (Cyndi Lauper), “So Emotional” (Whitney Houston), “Eternal Flame” (The Bangles) and “Alone” (Heart). He cowrote other well-known Top 10 U.S. pop hits, including “I’ll Stand by You” (Pretenders, Carrie Underwood), “I Touch Myself” (the Divinyls), “How Page 8
Do I Make You” (Linda Ronstadt), “I Drove All Night” (Roy Orbison, Cyndi Lauper, Celine Dion), “In Your Room” (The Bangles), “Too Little Too Late” (JoJo) and “Give Your Heart A Break” (Demi Lovato). Steinberg and Kelly were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011. Holly Knight has had a wild 38year ride in the music business that ignited when she joined her first band, Spider, in 1980. She penned many of their songs, including the single, “Better Be Good To Me,” which music icon Tina Turner recorded on her multi-platinum record, Private Dancer. Holly’s meteoric rise to success continued, writing the charttopping, “Love Is A Battlefield” and “Invincible” for Pat Benatar, “The Warrior” (Patty Smyth), “Ragdoll” (Aerosmith), “Change” (John Waite), “Never” (Heart), “Love Touch” (Rod Stewart), “Obsession” (Animotion), “Hide Your Heart” (KISS), and countless others. Knight has written a total of nine songs for Turner alone, including “The Best,” “Better Be Good To Me” and “Wildest Dreams.” Her songwriting has earned her numerous awards, including three Grammys and 13 ASCAP awards. In June of 2013, Knight was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame along with rock legends Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Foreigner, and JD Souther. Knight’s songs have appeared in countless movies such as: Thelma and Louise, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, Stewart Little, Hot Tub Time Machine, Dallas Buyer’s Club, The Other Woman, Anchorman 2, 13 Going on 30 and TV shows, American Idol, The Voice, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Late Show with James Corden, The Following, Nip/Tuck, Necessary Roughness, Mr. Robot, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, Family Guy, The Simpsons, South Park and many more. She is currently developing a musical with her hit songs, and working on her memoirs. Her passion and love of music has never wavered. Grammy-winning songwriter/ producer Desmond Child is one of music’s most accomplished hit-makers having written and/or produced more than 70 Top 40 singles with 300 million albums sold worldwide with a music career spanning over four decades. In 2008, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and serves on its Board of Directors. He is also the Chairman/ CEO of the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame founded in 2012. Child’s collaborations include: “Livin’ On A Prayer” and “You Give Love A Bad Name” (Bon Jovi), “Waking Up In Vegas” (Katy Perry), “Dude Looks Like A Lady” and “Angel” (Aerosmith), “I Was Made For Lovin’ You” and “Heaven’s On Fire” (KISS), “Livin’ La Vida Loca” (Ricky Martin), “How

EL K S HONOR M E M B ERS FOR Y EARS OF SER V ICE By Andy Costello Mission Viejo / Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge No. 2444 (“Elks Lodge”) conducted their annual tribute to members for years of service at a recent meeting. This year’s event, which was well attended by Elks members and guests, recognized years of tenure from one (1) to 65. Exalted Ruler (“ER”) Dave McLeod presided over the meeting. Lodge Secretary Norm Jones acted as master of ceremonies. Secretary Jones said of the event, “Pins are awarded for five-year increments of service. We affectionately call it ‘Old Timers Night’ and it is always a fun filled get-together for the recipients and attendees. There is always lots of storytelling from the older members about the early history of our Lodge.” Nearly 150 Elks, family and friends joyfully gathered at the Tuesday night meeting to celebrate the anniversaries of more than 40 Elks with up to 65 years of service to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. All attendees warmly applauded as each Elk was individually called up to stand before the crowd and be recognized for their individual anniversaries. ER McLeod said of the event, “It was a pleasure honoring all the awardees, but especially the sixtyeight younger members with five year awards. Our Lodge prides itself on the increasing numbers of younger men and women who are becoming members. We love to see those young families here enjoying themselves at a Friday night dinner as they are certainly the future of our Elks. McLeod added, “Nevertheless,

I think it is great when we honor our old timers. They are the people who built and made the Elks the charity organization it is today.” The Mission Viejo/Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge #2444 is celebrating 47 years of service to Saddleback Valley Communities. It is one of 10 lodges in the Orange Coast District of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) whose headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois. TAX PLANNING STRATEGIES FOR 2016 FROM KIM COYLE CPA
Dear Client; As the end of the year approaches, it’s a good time to think of planning strategies that will help lowering your taxes for 2016. My goal is for you to leverage your tax deductions and credit to the fullest extent. I want to briefly discuss five different strategies that can be powerful tools in lowering your tax bill. And the really great part is that each of these strategies is easy to understand and implement. Here are the strategies: 1. Prepay Expenses The IRS allows cash-basis taxpayers to prepay and deduct qualifying expenses up to 12 months in advance (through December 2017) without challenge, adjustment, or change by the IRS. For a cash-basis taxpayer, qualifying expenses include lease payment on business vehicles, rent payments on offices and machinery, and business and malpractice insurance premiums. This is a great way to pump up your 2016 deductions with expenses you will eventually pay anyway. 2. Stop Billing Customers and Patients An easy strategy for reducing your taxable income for this year is to stop billing your customers until December 31, 2016. Customers, patients, and insurance companies generally don’t pay until billed. Not billing customers and patients is a time-tested tax planning strategy that business owner have used successfully for years. 3. Buy Office Equipment With Section 179, you can write off up to $500,000 of office equipment in 2016. Qualifying Section 179 purchases include new and used personal property such as equipment, computers, desks, chairs, and certain qualifying vehicles. To qualify for Section 179, you need to both buy the items and put them in business service on or before midnight December 31, 2016. 4. Use Your Credit Cards If you are a sole proprietor, the day you charge a purchase to your business or personal credit card is the day the expense is deductible, Therefore, as a proprietor, consider using your credit cards to buy office supplies and other business necessities. If you operate your business as a corporation, and if the corporation has a credit card in the corporate name, the same rule applies: the date of charge is the date of deduction for the corporation. But if you operate your business as a corporation and you are the personal owner of the credit card, the corporation must reimburse you if you want the corporation to realize the tax deduction, and that happens on the date of reimbursement. Thus, submit your expense report and have your corporation make its reimbursements to you before midnight on December 31. 5. Don’t Assume You Are Taking Too Many Deductions Make sure your record all of your rightful deductions for 2016, because if your business deductions exceed your business income, you have a tax loss for the year. After a few modifications to the loss, tax law calls this a “net operating loss,” or an NOL. The good news is that tax law allows you to carry back the NOL for two years and get instant refunds from taxes previously paid. If, after going back for two years, you still have unused losses, you can carry them forward for up to 20 years. In other words, you have a 22-year window during which you can realize the benefits of your deductions. So always document your expenses in order to get your rightful deductions. Please do not hesitate contact me if you want to discuss in greater depth any of the strategies outlined above.

Dust off the grill and get those favorite barbecue recipes ready – it’s tailgating time! Whether watching at home or at the stadium, big games provide ample opportunities for entertaining and nothing brings friends together like grilled dishes, flavorful sides and delicious drinks. For many, watching the game is only half the experience. The tailgate is the main event and the fun and rivalry it brings is just as important as watching the game. Just as players work hard to prepare football formations, fans are just as focused on preparations for the big party. When it comes to planning your tailgate menu, grilled fare is always a winning choice. While beer has historically reigned supreme as the game day beverage pairing, more fans are looking to mix things up. Here are some tailgate pairings sure to score big with guests at your next game day celebration: Beef Classic selections such as juicy ribs and hamburgers are common fixtures on many tailgating menus. Try creating your own marinades with ingredients like honey, sweet chili sauce, ground ginger or Creole

seasoning. Put a personal spin on classic hamburgers by serving them with interesting toppings like cherry chutney, smoky chili or creamy beer cheese. For side options, consider slowcooked baked beans, jalapeno cornbread muffins or crunchy slaw tossed with a fresh lemon dressing. Bring out the richness of red meats with a glass of Yellow Tail Big Bold Red, which serves up flavors of dark fruits, a hint of spice and bold oak notes. Chicken Whether its wings or sandwiches, chicken is typically on the game day menu, but that doesn’t have to mean boring. Add some extra zing to everyone’s favorite white meat with a spicy curry rub or Asian-inspired marinade blend. Serve these dishes with a side of cucumber or cold pasta tossed with roasted red pepper, mozzarella and cherry tomatoes. Not sure of a beverage selection? Pair your poultry with a sweet moscato or bottled sangria. Seafood Some fans may need a break from the fried foods that grace the tailgate spread. Give guests the option
of lighter fare with grilled seafood entrees such as salmon filets with avocado relish or grilled tequila-lime shrimp skewers. As a side, pair your favorite seafood selections with easyto-grill veggies like corn, zucchini and yellow squash. Refresh your palate with a glass of crisp white wine such as Yellow Tail Pinot Grigio, which features refreshing green apple and pear flavors.
Whether celebrating at home or away, remember you can still impress your tailgating teammates with a championship-worthy spread. Leave the competition in the dust by putting your own spin on some grilled favorites, and you’re sure to be the game day MVP. For more entertaining ideas, visit yellowtailwine.com. Local coto resident Author Robert L. Schmidt Writes a Political Satire Offers a Meet & Greet at Barnes & Noble Aliso Viejo Robert L. Schmidt is a local writer who has lived in Coto de Caza for over 15 years. His first novel titled “Natural Born Leader: A Tribute to the American Political System” will debut at Barnes & Noble Aliso Viejo on Saturday, February 18. The author will be on hand to sign and discuss his new book between the hours of 2pm and 4pm. The book is a political satire that aims to erase some of the anxiety caused by the last election (and for some, the next four years). The book begins with Senator Bill “Tex” Flowers, a hard partying senator from the Lone Star State and the leading contender for the Republican presidential nomination. Bill’s troubles begin when he finds out his latest fling isn’t with a contributor’s wife, but an adult film star named Lola Fontaine. Natural Born Leader makes politics fun again and tells us that, in America, anyone can truly become president. We invite you to join in an afternoon with the author. This event is free and open to the public. No RSVP necessary although seating is limited. Barnes & Noble Aliso Viejo is located at 26751 Aliso Creek Rd, Aliso Viejo, CA 92656. Construction Begins on Julianne and George Argyros Plaza and Center at Segerstrom Center for the Arts Photos by Doug Gifford Dee and Larry Higby with Susan Samueli The rain had stopped just in time to celebrate the official ground breaking for Segerstrom Center for the Arts new Julianne and George Argyros Plaza and the Center for Dance and Innovation. Organizers were prepared for a wet afternoon but the clouds parted and blue skies gave way to sunshine as folks gathered inside the tent to celebrate! The plaza has been named in recognition of Julia and George Argyros’ long-time support of the Center and their generous $13.5 million lead gift to the Center’s Next Act campaign. The many new features and amenities of the Argyros Plaza and Center for Dance and Innovation will help to support an assortment of programs and performances offered on the plaza and by the CDI and Center Without Boundaries. These will enable the Center to significantly enhance its artistic programs, performances and venues while responding to the growing needs of a rapidly changing Orange County. John L. Ginger, Chairman of the Board, said, “We are so grateful that Julia and George believe in the importance of this plaza to the quality of life in our community. We are honored that Julia and George support the Center’s goals and are helping to make them happen.” Designed by the firm of Michael Maltzan Architecture, the Argyros Plaza will be a new public gathering place, welcoming and attractive to all of the county’s diverse communities, offering exceptional year- round programs and performances as well as guest amenities that include a café, public stage, shaded seating areas, WiFi and enhanced lighting and sound. Grill Up a Game Changer Simple ingredients make game day great Grilling and game day go handin-hand, but if your tailgating menu needs a makeover, it may be time to explore new ways to bring bold flavor to your favorite dishes and drinks. Chef Justin Smillie, of Upland in New York City and author of “Slow Fires: Mastering New Ways to Braise, Roast and Grill,” relies on a good quality vinegar and roasted garlic butter spiked with a bold flavor like Tabasco Sauce to bring heat and add life to the flavors on the grill for game day. “I love to use Tabasco Sauce as a flavor enhancer, much the same as you would use a good vinegar,” Smillie said. “It’s a sauce that helps draw out and accentuate flavor.” Before planning your next game day bash, heed these additional meal prep tips from Smillie: Work with ingredients and techniques that you are already comfortable with and then accent with a new idea. Have foods set up and nearly ready when guests arrive so they only require a few final touches at the grand reveal before you can enjoy the meal. Keep pantry items on hand that bring a little nuance and subtlety to a dish, such as a good vinegar or olive oil with a subtle perfume. Start early, plan ahead and build flavors. The success of good barbecue never starts the day of; it’s a labor of love that only gets better
with time. Find more recipes to spice up your tailgating menu at Tabasco.com. 5 tips to score big in your fantasy football league this season
More than 57 million people will play fantasy sports this year, according to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association (FSTA). With fantasy football season underway, you need to make sure your game face is on and your line-up is set. If you have a team this season, or this is your first year playing, here are some tips for scoring a successful season: 1. Don’t receive an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Whether you’re playing in a formalized league or one the office football aficionado threw together, it’s important to know and follow the rules of your league. Just like the real deal, fantasy football has rules and regulations. Run afoul of those rules in a formalized league and you might be invited to leave, or at the very least, not come back next year. Mess up in the office and you’ll have to hear about it until you retire. Realize people will play with
varying levels of commitment and proficiency, but everyone wants to have fun - and rules help make that possible. 2. Avoid fumbling your lineup. Once you have your lineup locked in for draft day, your player knowledge doesn’t stop there. Devote time each week to research your player’s strengths and weaknesses. You can rank players on many criteria, from last year’s performance to expert predictions of this year’s performance. Researching can help you get your best lineup each week to crush the competition. Whether you’re playing to win or just for fun, some preparation can help ensure you put together your dream team. 3. Score savings with an audible. More than a third of fantasy sports players primarily use their phones to track scores, follow teams, make lineup changes and communicate with others about their fantasy sport, according to the FTSA. That’s a lot of phone usage on-the-go that can potentially cause high overage charges. Switching to a more affordable plan can make your fantasy football season more cost efficient. Just in time for kick-off, Straight Talk Wireless is launching Straight Talk Plus(TM), giving customers even more options to save
on their wireless service. Available exclusively at Walmart, Straight Talk Plus lets you get the latest smart phones like the Samsung Galaxy S7 for just about $1 a day. Just add our unlimited service plan with 5GB of high speed data (then 2G speeds) starting at just $45 per month to make sure you’re covered for all of those game-day lineup changes. Best of all, there is no contract on your smartphone or unlimited plan - letting customers cancel anytime with no activation fees or penalties. 4. Tackle Traditions. Every fantasy football league is different. It’s much more than just strictly about winning. This is a game that brings friends, roommates and colleagues together to participate alongside their favorite players each week. With this, the collective personalities and traditions between leagues can vary. Whether you’re new to the league or the reining champ, make sure you double check the scoring system and are aware of your league’s traditions. 5. Get caught up with sideline streaming. Remember, one does not simply pick a team and then stop paying attention. In fact, keeping track of how players on your team are performing in real life is what makes fantasy football exciting. Not everyone has time to watch every
game their players are in, or even just the highlights. Consider downloading a fantasy football app for your smartphone to stream games, keep track of stats, scores, injuries and more. Straight Talk Wireless will help you have your data streaming needs covered. Now you’re well on your way to a winning team and prepared for the season ahead. For more ways to save, visit www.StraightTalk.com. This is a lease-to-own transaction - except in MN, NJ, WI, and WY where straight leases are offered. Well-qualified credit may be required to purchase. Smart Pay terms: Lease-to-own transaction for the Samsung Galaxy S7 total cost is $722.88 with 24 30-day payments plus any taxes and fees except in North Carolina where final payment may be more. No ownership until all payments made. May be able to exercise early purchase option. Retail cost of the Galaxy S7 is $599, subject to change. Customers may end lease and return phone at any time. Wireless service subject to Straight Talk Terms and Conditions. On the $45 Unlimited plan the first 5GB of data is at high speeds. After 5GB, speeds are reduced to 2G where streaming and audio may be affected. - (BPT)

Power Up Your Tailgate Tips for safe portable generator use
No matter the time of year, there are many situations in which you may find yourself in need of electricity. From weather-related emergencies that leave your home without power to tailgating, where electricity can add warmth and convenience, portable generators can help you keep the power on at all times. “Portable generators make it more convenient to enjoy some of our favorite pastimes and ease the burden of unexpected power outages, but there are some risks to keep in mind,” said Susan Orenga, representative for the Portable Generator Manufacturers’ Association (PGMA). “Taking the appropriate safety precautions can help ensure that users fully appreciate the benefits of portable power.” One of the greatest risks associated with portable generator use is carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a gas you cannot smell, see or taste. The engine exhaust from portable generators contains this gas, and people and animals exposed to excess levels of it may suffer fatal consequences. Using portable generators safely and appropriately at all times can help avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. While enjoying pregame festivities, remember these tips: Never run a portable generator indoors or in partially enclosed spaces, such as garages, porches, breezeways or tents, even if using fans or opening doors and windows for ventilation. Carbon monoxide can build up and linger for hours, even after the generator has shut off. Always place a portable generator downwind and point the engine exhaust away from occupied spaces, such as the tailgating area. Get to fresh air immediately and call 911 for
emergency medical attention if you feel sick, dizzy or weak. Bring along a battery-operated carbon monoxide alarm and keep it close by at all times. Always refer to the generator owner’s manual for further information about safe operation and potential hazards. When temporary or remote electric power is needed, portable generators can provide flexibility and comfort. When grid-supplied power fails, portable generators can provide reassuring light to a storm-darkened house, restore operation to necessary equipment and make it possible to use
climate control devices such as fans and space heaters. At the stadium, a portable generator can bring the comforts of home by powering a wide range of devices such as heaters, radios and fans while also helping fuel the fun with festive lighting and quick, easy grilling. By learning how to properly operate your portable generator, you and your family can safely avoid the inconvenience of power outages and enjoy hours of fun before the big game. More than 150 Pop Art works including furniture, paintings, and everyday objects, go on view at the Orange County Museum of Art Pop Art Design
In the late 1950s, Pop Art burst onto the art scene with nothing less than a bang. On January 7, 2017, the Orange County Museum of Art opened Pop Art Design with more than 150 artworks that are bold, bright, and familiar. Pop Art influenced furniture and architecture, as well as everyday objects. Sofas, lamps, and paper bags became topics of artistic reflection and developed into a genre that moved beyond visual art and included both graphic design and industrial design. Pop Art Design is the first comprehensive exhibition examining the inspirations and cross-references between art and design that continue to shape our society today. The exhibition is on view January 7 through April 2, 2017. Pop Art is one of the most influential art movements since 1945 with a fundamental element of dialogue between design and art. Pop Art Design features artworks from international museums by artists Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, Richard Hamilton, and more; juxtaposed design objects by designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Achille Castiglioni, and Ettore Sottsass; as well as extensive ephemera. “We are excited to host this international exhibition that examines the intersection between Pop art and design,” stated OCMA Director Page 24
and CEO Todd D. Smith. “OCMA is the only west coast venue for this exhibition, and we are pleased to complement the work in the exhibition with important works from our own collection.” Some of the highlights of the exhibition include George Nelson’s Marshmallow Sofa (1955); Andy Warhol’s iconic Campbell’s Soup Cans II (1969); Studio 65’s Leonardo sofa which has rarely been exhibited since it was first produced in 1969; Allen Jones’s provocative Chair (1969); Verner Panton’s Cone Armchair K3 (1959); Superstudio’s Passiflora floor or wall lamp (1966), and notable album covers from the 1960s. OCMA will enhance the exhibition with several original artworks from its own collection including paintings by Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and Ed Ruscha, as well as iconic sculptures such as Wedding Souvenir (1966) by Claes Oldenberg and Eraser (1967) by Vija Celmins. “Vibrant and innovative, while also a playful commentary on consumer culture, this exhibition demonstrates the extraordinary influence of the Pop sensibility on all aspects of day to day life,” stated OCMA Senior Curator Cassandra Coblentz. Pop Art’s influence on furniture, graphic design, and architecture has until this point received limited attention. This exhibition unites
The Coto de Caza News
artworks and design objects, along with photographs, documents, films, and texts. With this variety of material, Pop Art Design demonstrates how design in the early 1950s anticipated later elements of Pop Art when both artists and designers explored the motifs of the emerging consumer society. Objects of daily use were transformed into artistic pictorial motifs and sculptures while designers, in turn, availed themselves of artistic strategies like quotation, collage, and irony to develop a new aesthetic for everyday objects. Pop Art shaped a new sense of cultural identity, with a focus on celebrity, mass consumer production, and the expanding industries of advertising, television, radio and print media. Pop Art Design offers new
insights into the pop phenomenon: the migration of motifs between art and design; the relationship between everyday object and image; and how everyday life first came under the still-dominant influence of pop culture. OCMA INFORMATION Wednesday – Sunday, 11 am – 5 pm; with extended hours Friday, 11 am – 8 pm. Admission: Adults $10, seniors and students $7.50, children 12 and under are free. Fridays are free to the public and parking is always free. Orange County Museum of Art is located at 850 San Clemente Drive in Newport Beach, CA. Develop a Game plan Before CookinG FAMILY FEATURES
A
s fall settles in, the air gets crisper and the kids head back to school, many Americans eagerly anticipate one thing: football season. Whether you’re a die-hard gridiron fan or prefer to enjoy the food and festivities from the sidelines, everyone can agree that a successful tailgate is key to any memorable game day get-together. According to a recent Bank of America survey, 34 percent of Americans plan to attend a professional or college football game or tailgate this fall, and 20 percent plan to host a tailgate or viewing party themselves. While many love planning out meals, decorations and activities for friends and family, the costs can easily add up and make hosting feel like an underdog game. So how can fans plan a tailgate that stays on budget and impresses any crowd – home or away? Home design and DIY experts Ben and Erin Napier teamed with Bank of America to provide these cost-savvy
tips for pulling off a memorable tailgate that fits the bill for every fan on game day.
Get in the Competitive Spirit Whether you’re grilling outside the stadium or spending halftime hanging out in your backyard, Ben recommends laying out a variety of games for guests to enjoy. “We take college football season very seriously,” Ben said. “For some friendly, competitive fun before kickoff and during halftime, create a larger-than-life wood-block game.” Follow these simple steps: 1. Sand down wooden four-by-fours. 2. Cut into 48 pieces, each eighteen 18 inches long. 3. Stack pieces into a tower. 4. Take turns pulling pieces to see who knocks the tower over first. For added flair and personalization, Erin suggests painting the wooden blocks your team colors.
When preparing meals for a large group, planning ahead and using simple recipes are key. “We like to plan our meals ahead so that by the time our friends arrive and the game starts, we’re pretty much done in the kitchen,” Ben Napier said. A simple, versatile marinade helps keep flavors fresh throughout the football season while avoiding additional costs. “For our tailgates, we prefer to stick to the classics,” Ben said. “When we aren’t grilling hot dogs or burgers, we make a big pot of chili in our slow cooker – letting it simmer for a few hours before serving when the game starts. If we’re tailgating at the stadium, we’ll even throw the chili together
Bring the Stadium to Your Living Room If you missed out on tickets or your home team is on the road, you can still make your home feel like a day at the stadium. “During tailgates at home, we try to make our friends feel like they’re actually at the game and having as much fun as possible,” Ben said. Decorating your home with the team’s colors – such as creating DIY wall art with framed jerseys – is a simple, cost-efficient way to capture the tailgate essence. Ben suggests setting up a big screen TV on the deck or outdoor living area with speakers to mimic the feeling of watching a game outside in the stands. For inexpensive, comfy seating that will help welcome guests and add another pop of team spirit, try purchasing throw pillows in your team’s colors from a wholesale club or superstore, but make sure to weatherproof them first using fabric protection spray. “We also like to play recordings of our college band before kickoff if we can’t be at the pep rally in person,” Erin said.

Create a Tailgating Space that Stands Out One of the best parts of tailgating at the stadium is being surrounded by fellow fans. Try sprucing up your car or tent to create an inviting space that showcases your team pride. Ben recommends investing in a large, custom-designed vinyl or fabric banner
in a cast iron pot straight on the grill.”
Do-It-All Marinade
3 parts olive oil 2 parts soy sauce 1 part Worcestershire sauce 1 part balsamic vinegar lemon juice Dijon mustard pepper garlic powder
In small bowl, combine all ingredients then place in re-sealable plastic bag. Drizzle marinade over chicken and let stand in refrigerator about 4 hours prior to grilling.
for your tent. Not only can they be affordable to produce and last for many seasons, but they stand out in a crowd. “Because the banner’s durable, you can use it every year,” Ben said. “Its unique design makes it easy to find after we walk around the tailgate to meet fellow fans.” Even when your tailgate screams “Go Team,” it’s important to make everybody – even the opposing team’s fans – feel welcome. “Experiencing a big game may be a once in a lifetime experience for them,” Erin said. “Football fans should be all about hospitality, even toward the rival team’s visitors.”
Defeat Your Budget “Planning for a busy football season doesn’t need to be a ‘loss’ for your budget,” Ben said. “Turning to a credit card that rewards you for everyday purchases is one of the easiest ways to ‘win’ this season.” Because tailgating throughout the entire football season requires many trips to the grocery store – often buying in bulk – using a card like the BankAmericard Cash Rewards credit card lets you earn 2 percent cash back at wholesale clubs and grocery stores. And 3 percent cash back when gassing up for away games – on up to $2,500 in grocery/wholesale club/gas quarterly spend. You also earn 1 percent back on all other purchases.
