5 Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas She’ll Love
Finding the perfect Valentine’s Day gift has been a challenge for ages. Whether your relationship is new or has withstood the test of time, it’s the perfect time to remind her that she plays an important role in your life. It turns out all that worry may be for nothing. A survey by PANDORA Jewelry found 65 percent of women agree that they receive the gift they want when they drop hints. This year, make the gift-giving process seamless by watching for hints, reading between the lines and considering one of
these sure-to-please gift ideas. Put a sparkle in her eye. According to the survey, the majority of women consider jewelry to be the most covetable gift, yet 77 percent normally receive flowers or chocolates. Read between the lines and give her a desirable gift, like pieces from the PANDORA Jewelry Valentine’s Day collection. From stacking rings to gorgeous pendants, the Lock Your Promise and Explosion of Love collections are full of high-quality, hand-crafted,
stylish pieces that nearly any woman would be thrilled to receive this year. It’s the thought that counts – really. Most women agree that a thoughtful gift, not the most expensive one, is a winner. Something that shows you really know her can send a strong message. For example, if you decide to give flowers, instead of defaulting to the usual dozen red roses, think about her favorite bloom, or choose a flower that may have special meaning in her life. Make time the treasure. A busy pace of life means that there’s rarely enough time to spend together without distractions. A gift doesn’t have to be a physical object, but rather an experience you can share together. Plan a date night away from home, enroll in a class to learn a new hobby together or make a point to simply enjoy each other’s company. Simple and sentimental. Even if sappy isn’t your standard MO, Valentine’s Day is the perfect occasion to get a little sentimental. Give a copy of the movie from your first date, or revisit a restaurant that holds special meaning in your relationship. Make it meaningful and you’ll see how a simple idea can earn a big response. When in doubt, ask. If you’re out of ideas or inspiration, ask your beloved what she’d enjoy most. That’s not to say you must forgo the element of surprise. Remember that just because she suggests jewelry doesn’t mean she knows exactly what you’ll choose. Find more tips for Valentine’s Day gift ideas at Pandora.net.

Saddleback Valley Elks continues to be one of the fastest growing service organizations in Orange County with a current membership of 1,244 men and women. Exalted Ruler (ER) Mike Long and his corps of officers conducted the impressive initiation ceremony and welcomed the new members. ER Mike addressed the assemblage
saying, “We have only recently completed our busiest time of year with many charitable events carried out by our members over the holidays. Now we enter one of the most exciting times of the year as we begin our nominations for new officers for the coming Elk’s year.” Elks lodge officers serve a term of one year in each position. In March a new ER will take office and the three Lodge VPs are anticipating a move up to the next position of honor. Of course all the positions are determined by a vote of the membership. Elk’s events on tap for February are a Red Cross Blood Drive, a Senior’s Valentine’s Day Dance, and a Blue Star Mothers event. The State judging for Elks Scholarship awards also takes place in February as high school seniors who have qualified, compete for Elks scholarships ranging from $1000 to $50,000. The Elks will award over four million dollars ($4,000,000) in scholarships nationally this year. A number of high school students from Saddleback Valley schools are among the applications that have qualified and are being considered in this year’s final judging. The Mission Viejo/Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge #2444 is celebrating 49 years of service to Saddleback Valley Communities. It is one of 10 lodges in the Orange Coast District of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) whose headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois. The BPOE is a charitable organization with a 150 year history of giving. “Elks Care Elks Share” For information regarding Elks programs or membership, call 949 830-3557.

Pianist Will Pickvance Photos by Nico Bernardi Will asks Father Christmas for a spaceship, but he gets a piano instead. As he tries to work out how he might use it to reach the moon, Will is drawn into a fantastic pianistic adventure that takes him to a cave where he meets Johann Sebastian Bach, is introduced to an ill-tempered Ludwig von Beethoven and jams with ‘Fats’ Waller. With music, humor and fascinating stories about the piano and legendary composers and musicians who used it to create glorious music, Will discovers that, through music, you can go anywhere you want. Anatomy of the Piano (for
beginners) and Will’s amazing journey come to Segerstrom Center for the Arts on February 17 and 18, 2018 in Samueli Theater. Performances are at 1 p.m. The Sunday performance will be ASL interpreted. Tickets for Anatomy of the Piano (for beginners) are $20 and are available online at SCFTA.org, at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 556-2787. The Center offers many services for patrons with disabilities including removable wheelchair locations, binoculars and assistive listening devices. To learn more visit SCFTA. org/accessibilityinformation.
Audiences are encouraged to arrive one hour before the performance for free creative activities. The Center’s Education Department offers these enriching experiences to provide young people and their families with more opportunities to play together creatively. Studies show that this is critical in helping to develop the ability to think and problem solve. Will Pickvance is more than anything else, a piano player. An improvising pianist by make-up, he practices Bach Fugues, Beethoven sonatas and Brahms intermezzi, not with the intention of performing these great works, but rather to feed a neverending quest for musical vocabulary and depth in his own inventions. He cannot recall not being able to play the piano and cannot imagine what it must be like not to be able to play the piano. His shows have toured to the UK, Australia, Malaysia and China. Segerstrom Center’s 2017 – 2018 Family Series continues with The Gruffalo (March 24-25, 2018), Shh! We Have a Plan (April 14-15, 2018) and Mr. Popper’s Penguins (April 22, 2018). Segerstrom Center for the Arts applauds its corporate partners including Kia Motors America, Official Automotive Partner; United Airlines, Official Airline; and Omaha Steaks International, Official Fine Food Retailer. Parenting OC is the Media Partner of the Family Series. Segerstrom Center’s Education Programs Segerstrom Center’s Education and Community Programs Department offers a variety of programs to students from elementary school through the university level, teachers,
arts administrators and individuals who simply want to broaden their own experiences, but not in a structure that is strictly academic. These programs achieve two especially important objectives. First, they develop the audiences of the future. Second, they integrate the arts into the standard curriculum and enhance learning, creative thinking, cognitive and social skills. The Education and Community Programs Department works hand-in-hand with a number of boards of education, providing support and assistance to ensure the success and effectiveness of the Center’s programs. The popular Family Series engages, enchants and inspires youngsters with the magic of live performance. International artists combine music, dance and theater that can be enjoyed by the entire family, creating experiences that instill an appreciation for the arts and create lifelong memories. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is an acclaimed arts institution as well as a beautiful multi-disciplinary cultural campus. It is committed to supporting artistic excellence, offering unsurpassed experiences and to engaging the entire community in new and exciting ways through the unique power of live performance and a diverse array of inspiring artsbased education and community engagement programs. 600 Town Center Drive Costa Mesa, CA 92626 T (714) 556-2121 F (714) 556-8984 SCFTA.org

Marine Expeditionary Unit Exercise training event Photos by Bill Casper Coto de Caza News Photographer Marine Expeditionary Unit Exercise (MEUEX) is the first opportunity for the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) to conduct integrated training following their January 2018 composite. The MEUEX focuses on refining Combat Operations Center set-up and command and control procedures across the Marine Air Ground Task Force. Ultimately, MEUEX prepares the Fighting Thineenth to synchronize and execute training and missions during the rest of their pre-deployment training and summer deployment to the Western Pacific. Incorporated into the Marine Expeditionary Unit Exercise are raids training packages which take place across various training areas at Camp Pendleton, California. These packages include mechanized, air, and motorized raid training. Expeditionary Operations Training Group. Amphibious Raids Branch, oversees the raid assault training for 3rd Battalion, 1 st Marines, the Battalion Landing Team for the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit. From January 29 to February 9, Kilo Company, 113, the mechanized raid force is conducting training to refine their tactics, techniques. and procedures in order to enhance their ability to conduct expeditionary operations while deployed. MEUEX is the first oftive pre-deployment training exercises the MEU will conduct before its 2018 summer deployment. Information about the 13th MEV Sea-based Forward Presence. As a sea-based force, the MEU remains independent of host nation pons and airfields, basing agreements, over-flight restrictions, and political sensitivities associated with landbased forces. This freedom of action and inherent force protection allow for unparalleled access to the littorals of the world and beyond. ARG-MEU presence signals U.S. commitment and helps to shape and promote regional stability. Expeditionary in Nature. The U.S. Marine Corps is specifically organized for rapid deployment and conduct of operations and the MEU is its most “expeditionary unit. The MEU’s ability to rapidly task organize and operate in austere environments affords the Combatant Commander a force with greater flexibility than more conventional units. Crisis Action Planning and Response. Each MEV, along with its associated Navy partners, conducts extensive training in the Rapid Response Planning Process (R2P2). lbrough the use of R2P2, the MEV is capable of planning and commencing execution of se lected tactical operations within six hours of receipt of a mission. Combined Arms Integration. Each MEU conducts extensive integrated supporting anns training and is able to coordinate surface and air fires drawn from across the joint force. MEVs deploy with the ability to plan, Page 10
coordinate, and control fires in the loint and Combined environment. Marine Air-Ground Task Forces have long provided the United States with a broad spectrum of response options when U.S. and allied interests have been threatened and in non-combat situations that require instant response to crisis. Se lective, timely and credible commitment of air-ground units have, on many occasions, helped bring stability to a region and sent signals worldwide to aggressors that the United States is willing to defend its interests, and it is able to do so with a significantly powerful force on extremely short notice. The Marine Expeditionary Unit is the smallest of the MAGTFs and comprises about 2,400 Marines and Sai lors. Its major elements are the command element, the ground combat element, the aviation combat element, and the logistics combat element. The command element comprises the commanding officer and supporting staff - about 250 Marines and Sailors. It provides the overall command and control essential for effective planning and execution of operations and synchronizes the actions of each element within the MEU. Skill sets falling under the command element include: administration, intelligence, operations, logistics and embarkation, communications, legal and communication strategy and operations. The ground combat element is built around an infantry battalion and provides the overland combat power environments. for the MEU. Assets inherent within the standard infantry battalion include: medium and heavy machine guns, mortars, combined anti-anuor teams and scout snipers. While assigned to the MEU, the unit, designated a Battalion Landing Team, is reinforced with light armored reconnaissance vehicles, tanks, artillery, combat engineers and assault amphibian vehicles. The air combat element is a composite squadron that provides the MEU medium to heavy lift capability, assault support and close air support (CAS). Its assets include: MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, CH-53E Super Stallion heavy lift helicopters, AH-IZ Viper helicopters, UH-I Y Venom helicopters and F-35B Lightning. With a force strength of approximately 5OO, the ACE also includes personnel that conduct control of aircraft and missi les, aviation ground support, air craft maintenance/support and aviation logistics/supply. The logistics combat element, about 250 Marines and Sailors strong, provides combat support such as supply, maintenance, transportation, explosive ordnance disposal, military police, water production and distribution, engineering, medical and dental services, fuel storage and distribution, and other services to the deployed MEU. The LCE gives the MEU the abi lity to support itself for 15 days in austere expeditionary

D i s t r i c t B o a r d o f Tr u s t e e s President Martha McNicholas, Vice President Gila Jones, Trustee Amy Hanacek, Trustee Judy Bullockus, Superintendent Kirsten Vital and Capistrano Unified Educators Association President Sally White were present for the celebrations, and congratulated the winning teachers – Carol Cutkomp, Susan Peterson and David Pino – for their unyielding dedication to students. “We are honored to recognize these fantastic teachers who are dedicated to student success,” said President McNicholas. “Not only are Ms. Cutkomp, Ms. Peterson and Mr. Pino fostering academic achievement in their classrooms, they are preparing students for success in our communities as well. They are wonderful examples of the teachers we have in our District.” The winning educators were previously recognized as Teacher of the Year at their respective schools, and then advanced as candidates for the District’s 2018 Teacher of the Year honor. The three teachers now advance to the Orange County Teacher of the Year competition later this year. The 2018 Teachers of the Year are profiled below. Elementary School Teacher of the Year: Carol Cutkomp Carol Cutkomp has been a teacher at Tijeras Creek Elementary School for 18 years and brings 35 years of teaching experience to Capistrano
Unified School District. Colleagues know her to be a dedicated mentor who continues to support students after they graduate from her classroom. “I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand Ms. Cutkomp’s perseverance and rock-solid dedication since the first day I walked onto campus,” says Tijeras Creek Principal Diann Buckingham. “During her many years at our school she has written grants that have purchased over $10,000 in materials and technology.” Mrs. Cutkomp posts two simple, but powerful, words on her front board: “respect” and “honesty.” She works to make students feel comfortable taking risks and helps them realize that failure is a springboard, not an ending point. “Students must feel comfortable collaborating with their peers without fear of rejection,” she says. “There is nothing more satisfying than seeing scholars work together to solve problems.” Middle School Teacher of the Year: Susan Peterson For 28 years, Susan Peterson has taught social science at Niguel Hills Middle School. She is always open to learning new strategies and focuses on the success of ALL her students. She also embraces all things technology to teach her students and keep their interest in learning. “Classrooms that function the same way as they did when we were in school are not the answer for teens today who live in a rapidly changing world of bits and bytes,” she says. “As educators, we need to change the way we teach so we can keep our students in school and prepare them for a future that we can only imagine.” Mrs. Peterson often opens her
classroom to students at lunch as a safe, welcoming space. She is also recognized as a mentor for students who are interested in the education field. “Mrs. Peterson is a master teacher who has mentored many student teachers into successful teaching careers, several of who are on our campus today,” says Niguel Hill Assistant Principal Todd Amon. “Whether it is with curriculum development, classroom management or implementing needed intervention and enrichment, her mentees have grown into master teachers themselves and our students have reaped the benefits.” High School Teacher of the Year: David Pino David Pino has taught at Junipero Serra Alternative High School for eight years and is also an adjunct instructor at Saddleback Community College. He strives to motivate and prepare youth to be the best they can be academically, socially and emotionally, along a path of life-long learning. “I always encourage my students
to be their own heroes,” he says. “When I hear students complain about politicians and the government not working for the people, I challenge them to do something about it. As a government teacher, I offer extra credit for students who register others to vote.” Pino is quick to put programs in place to benefit students. Where he sees a need, he makes changes and implements courses or after school programs that allow our students to grow and thrive in ways they would not have otherwise. “Mr. Pino’s compassion and dedication to his students make him a true standout. Our students often have tumultuous lives and come to us with a history of schoolrelated challenges,” says colleague Becky Tran. “His empathetic, yet tough-love, approach shows he truly understands their plight, but holds them accountable at the same time. Students share a love and respect for him that is evident when they flock to his classroom at lunch, after school, or long after they have left his tutelage.”

Valentine’s Recipes You’ll Love to Share
If the way to your loved one’s heart is through the stomach, there’s no better way to start off this Valentine’s Day than with a homemade breakfast prepared with love. Whether you’re whipping up a breakfast for a spouse with a sophisticated palate or trying to tempt the taste buds of your littlest loves, explore these ideas to get inspired. Red is the color of love, so build your menu around fresh strawberries or raspberries, which pair perfectly with French toast or crepes, and can even dress up a simple cereal. For a more sensible menu, opt for a fruity berry smoothie or a parfait layered with fresh fruit, lowfat yogurt and granola. Add a hint of loving indulgence by sprinkling dark chocolate shavings on top. Show your affection with a plate of these colorful Cocoa-Kissed Red Velvet Pancakes featuring rich 100 percent cocoa, buttermilk and fresh berries. Heart-shaped cookie cutters lend a special touch to these fluffy, flavorful pancakes. Add sweet garnishes like powdered sugar and berries for a sensational way to say “I love you.” Find more recipes you’ll love to share with your nearest and dearest this Valentine’s Day at Culinary.net. Healthy tips for your Heart!
February is American Heart Month and Cardiovascular Disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, with one in three deaths caused by heart disease and stroke reminds Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. With more than 2 million heart attacks and strokes a year, and 800,000 deaths, it’s important you start taking some preventive measures one step at a time: • Stop smoking. Quitting smoking is the single most important thing a person can do to live longer. • Cut down on salt. Too much salt can cause high blood pressure, which increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease. • Watch your diet. A healthy diet can help to reduce the risk of developing heart disease, and can also help increase the chances of survival after a heart attack. • Monitor your alcohol. Too much alcohol can damage the heart muscle, increase blood pressure and also lead to weight gain. • Get active. The heart is a muscle and it needs exercise to keep fit so it can pump blood efficiently round Page 16
your body with each heartbeat. Check with your Doctor first before starting a rigorous exercise program. • Manage your weight. Carrying a lot of extra weight as fat can greatly affect your health and increases the risk of life-threatening conditions such as coronary heart disease and diabetes. • Get your blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked. The higher your blood pressure, the shorter your life expectancy. Learn to manage your stress levels. • Check your family history. Many times our past (family history) predicts our future. Make sure you can recognize the early signs of coronary heart disease. Tightness or discomfort in the chest, neck, arm or stomach that comes on when you exert yourself but goes away with rest may be the first sign of angina, which can lead to a heart attack if left untreated. For more information, contact your physician and visit www.cdc.gov/ features/heartmonth/index.html Happy Heart Month! Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna

Segerstrom Candlelight Concert at Julia and George Argyros plaza
George and Julia Argyros with Michael Bolton Photos by Doug Gifford The event of 2017 that I always look forward to is the Segerstrom Center for the Arts Candlelight Concert – held at the Segerstrom Center. Every year, they dazzle us with outstanding musical guests, fine dining and an after party that’s just top notch. This year, starlight and the Chicago skyline surrounded guests during this year’s spectacular 44th annual Candlelight Concert. One of the Center’s oldest traditions, Candlelight Concert exceeded previous Candlelight Concert records, raising more than $1.6 million and attended by 460 people. Segerstrom Center’s new Board Chairman, Mark Perry and his wife Carol chaired the event, which featured multi-Grammy® Awardwinner Michael Bolton and Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame band Chicago. Bolton opened his set with the song “Stand by Me” which was dedicated to Julia and George Argyros. Chicago played their hits which kept everyone on the dance floor dancing and singing along. Julia and George Argyros were honored guests who were celebrated and cheered for their generous gift to build the Center’s beautiful new Julianne and George Argyros Plaza and the Center for Dance and Innovation. Ronnie Allumbaugh, Sandi Jackson and Sandi Simon were honorary co-chairs. Décor was inspired by the band of course and, coincidentally, became a nod to Chairwoman Perry who hails from the Windy City. The Plaza Vista Middle School Choir serenaded guests as they arrived, standing in front Segerstrom Center’s new Board Chairman Mark Perry with Marta of custom marquee suggestive of Chicago’s famous theater marquees. Guests dined on the Segerstrom Hall stage and enjoyed a chilled Pee Wee Bhathal, Lisa and Jim Merage Potato and Smoked Salmon Salad with cucumber, creme fraiche dill and salmon caviar for starters. The main dish was a double header of porcini-rubbed filet mignon with roasted root vegetable ragout, and horseradish cauliflower crème, red wine jus and roosted fig AND a white wine-poached sole Veronique with green grapes, lemon braised fennel with champagne foam and sauce vin blanc. Oh, and the dessert was Patina’s take on the Chicago classic with golden sponge cake, white chocolate Chantilly, banana cream and passion gel. After dinner, we danced shoulder-to-shoulder to Chicago’s mega-hits. This year, women were given flat comfy shoes to wear so after an evening of wearing high heels – it was a relief to have a cozy pair of shoes to dance in! Once the music stopped, guests made their way to the Kia Valet Lounge via the new circular staircase from the hall’s Orchestra Terrace to the Argyros Plaza below. Sweet treats, hot chocolate and authentic Chicago hotdogs made for tasty midnight snacks. This year’s coup de Candlelight theatre? A gentle snowfall as people left Segerstrom Hall and entered the Argyros Plaza. Mark Perry noted, “We’re honored to recognize Julia and George Argyros at this year’s Candlelight Concert. Their visionary support is helping us to serve all of the dynamic and diverse communities of Orange County. The Julianne and George Argyros Plaza and Center for Dance and Innovation enables us to offer new and innovative community engagement and education programs that complement the expanding array of world-class performances that the Center presents. The funds raised by Candlelight Concert will support all of Jim and Angela Hsu with Betty and S.L. Huang these important programs as the Center begins an exciting and bold next act.” Proceeds from Candlelight Concert support the Center’s artistic programming, which brings the largest array of the finest artists and performances to Orange County, and community engagement and education programs that serve more than 300,000 young people and students each year. In fact, since opening in 1986, more than 17 million people have attended performances and more than 6 million children and families have participated in various community and education programs. The inaugural Candlelight Concert, which raised money to build a major performing arts center in Orange County, was held in a vacant Kresge five-anddime. It was transformed into an elegant ballroom with the use of candles. Since then, the annual gala has been called Candlelight Concert, with entertainment by celebrated artists. These have included Diana Krall, Diana Ross, Frankie Valli, Jay Leno, Natalie Cole, Tony Bennett, Kenny Loggins, Harry Belafonte, Johnny Mathis, Donna Summer, Smokey Robinson, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Broadway stars Kristen Chenoweth, Sutton Foster as well as many others. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is an acclaimed arts institution as well as a beautiful multi-disciplinary cultural campus. It is committed to supporting artistic excellence on all its stages, offering unsurpassed experiences, and to engaging the entire community in new and exciting ways through the unique power of live performance and a diverse array of inspiring programs. 4 undeniable reasons to travel in 2018 Do you dream of getting away from the stress of your everyday life? Are you looking for a way to reconnect with loved ones? Do the winter blues have you dreaming of warm sunny days? Sounds like you’re in need of a vacation. Planning a vacation gives you something to look forward to in the new year. What’s more, studies show planning a vacation is one the best parts of the travel experience. It can boost your mood for weeks leading up to the big trip. From researching exciting destinations, booking accommodations and counting down the days until you leave, travel can get your 2018 off to the right start, or be the perfect gift for the holidays. Here are four tips to make the trip perfect: Get away to disconnect: When planning a vacation, select a location where you can truly disconnect from your job and home responsibilities. For example, with 60 miles of coastline open for relaxation and fun, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is a wonderful destination that’s an easy drive or flight from virtually anywhere in the United States. Once you arrive, make sure your out-of-office email is set and resist the urge to check social media. Now’s the time to focus on you and your loved ones.
Get away to reconnect: AAA reports two out of three people say quality time with loved ones is the most important part of a vacation. In addition to selecting a great location, strive to find comfortable and convenient accommodations. Condotels, multibedroom hotel units and beach homes, are all wonderful options to bring your family and friends closer together. Plus, the extra amenities (like full kitchens) are sure to make your stay that much more relaxing. Get away to build memories: A whopping 91 percent of people say their favorite memory is a vacation, according to Expedia.com research. To set the stage for massive memory-making, select a location with something for everyone. There’s more than just the gorgeous shoreline at Myrtle Beach. Feel like a mermaid when you visit Ripley’s Aquarium. Learn the wonders of science and the imagination at WonderWorks. Travel back in history by exploring Hopsewee Plantation and LW Paul Living History Farm. Finally, indulge the palate by visiting a variety of eateries along Murrells Inlet MarshWalk. Learn more at VisitMyrtleBeach.com. Get away to try something new: Trying an activity you’ve never done before is guaranteed to give you and your family memories to last a lifetime. Do some research about
the destination you’ve selected and sign up for activities in advance to ensure you get the most convenient times. Whether it’s crabbing off a pier, kayaking pristine back-rivers or taking a hot air balloon ride, doing a unique activity is something you’ll always remember (plus you’ll get a
story that is sure to make everyone jealous back home). Stop dreaming and start planning that unused PTO is full of possibilities. Whether a gift or a family trip next year, let these ideas guide you to the vacation of a lifetime. - (BPT)

The History of Valentine’s Day: Who was St. Valentine? By Scott Brodie This history of Valentine’s Day is shrouded in mystery. While every February 14, Valentine’s Day, couples send romantic Valentines, no one knows the true history of Valentine’s Day. Many believe the history of Valentine’s Day can be found in the question, “Who was Saint Valentine?” The Roman Catholic Church has three saints named Valentine, or Valentinus. Of these three, the history of Valentine’s Day supposedly honors the first Saint Valentine. So, who was Saint Valentine? Saint Valentine was a third-century priest in Rome. He was martyred. Any further answer to, “Who was Saint Valentine?,” is speculation. Yet, there are three theories about the history of Valentine’s Day. Each attempts to answer, “Who was Saint Valentine?” Who Was Saint Valentine? A Priest Marrying Couples. According to this theory on the history of Valentine’s Day, Saint Valentine was a priest during Emperor Claudius II’s reign. Because Claudius II believed single men were better soldiers than married men, he outlawed marriage for young men. Saint Valentine did not adhere to Claudius II’s proclamation, however, and continued to perform marriages in secret. When he was
discovered, Saint Valentine was imprisoned and sentenced to death. Who Was Saint Valentine? A Priest Freeing Christians. Another theory about the history of Valentine’s Day contends that Saint Valentine was sentenced to death for free Christians from Roman prisons. This is the least romantic history of Valentine’s Day, but it portrays Saint Valentine as a heroic and strong figure. Who Was Saint Valentine? The First Valentine. According to this romantic theory of the history of Valentine’s Day, Saint Valentine sent the first valentine. He supposedly fell in love while imprisoned. Perhaps it was the jailor’s daughter who he loved. Whoever the lady was, he sent her a letter signed, “From your Valentine.” The truth is, no one can answer, “Who was Saint Valentine?” Since it remains unknown, the question for today is not, “Who was Saint Valentine?” Rather the question is, “Who is Saint Valentine now?” Whoever he was, Saint Valentine is remembered as a strong, heroic and romantic figure. It is no wonder lovers have been sending love letters in his name, as valentines, ever since the Middle Ages.
Transform your home into a retreat with these 5 tips from a luxury resort There’s a reason why they say your home is your castle. This is a place of rest and refuge so you can be returned to your best state. The next time you find yourself with a quiet evening or weekend in your abode, make self-care and pampering a priority. In fact, you can borrow a few pages from the wellness playbook with expert tips from one the world’s most storied resorts. Destination Kohler located in the heart of Wisconsin in the quaint village of Kohler - and recently named one of the top 15 wellness resorts by Conde Nast Traveler - is what you might call a luxurious refuge. Here, after you explore picturesque snowcovered hiking paths on snowshoes or cross-country skis, and enjoy fivestar accommodations at this historic American Club, you can restore your body and mind at the luxurious fivestar Kohler Waters Spa or unique Yoga on the Lake facility. But even a few simple additions at your home, says Garrett Mersberger, director of Kohler Waters Spas, can greatly increase the relaxation factor during your down time. 1. Include the five senses. The secret to setting up the best spa experience, Mersberger says, is making positive connections to all the senses: touch, smell, taste, sight and sound. “If one of these is missing, the experience isn’t the same,” he says. Page 24
Even the smallest changes can transform your space and elevate your mood. You can light a candle and plug in the indoor water fountain to create sound and lighting that soothes the mind. Snuggle into a plush robe and encase your feet in super soft socks or slippers after your shower or bath. Finally, don’t forget to set yourself up with a glass of wine and a cheese plate. 2. Prepare your body with hydrotherapy. People have known this since ancient times: water has great powers of restoration, which is why hydrotherapy is central to any worthwhile spa experience. At home, it’s as simple as making small adjustments to your shower routine. Mersberger suggests changing the pulses in your shower head and experimenting with hot and cool blasts of water, which he says are good for the skin and blood flow. But be careful, while a hot bath or shower before bed feels terrific, it’s not relaxing since warm temperatures will raise your blood flow, preparing the body for work or exercise, he says. To ready your body for sleep or relaxation, finish with a shower that’s a neutral temperature (about 92-97 degrees Fahrenheit), to return your body to normal. 3. Release blocked energy. Start your quest for relaxation with a simple yoga move called the
The Coto de Caza News
seated cat/cow position. “In addition to releasing blocked energy, it also opens the spine,” says Ashley Kohler, Manager of Yoga on the Lake at Destination Kohler. To do this, sit cross-legged on the floor and place your hands on your knees. As you inhale, lean your chest forward and lift your gaze to the sky. As you exhale, round out your spine while drawing your shoulders forward, gazing down. 4. Hone your breathing technique. Breathing is a vital component of managing stress levels, Kohler says. Yet most Americans only breathe with a third of their lung capacity, creating “flight energy” in the body and cultivating that feeling of stress. “Conscious breathing will ease your nervous system and help control stress levels and help you unwind,”
Kohler says. Here’s an easy antidote: Sit quietly for a few moments, taking full-body, deep breaths through your nose. “I like to visualize the ocean, and imagine the sound of the its big crashing waves with every breath I take,” she says. 5. Relieve stress by going outside. The benefits of going outside in the winter is not only good for our bodies, being outside chases away the winter blahs, as research has told us. So go ahead and skip the treadmill and go jogging in the park. Or rent a pair of snowshoes take a tromp through the woods. Or take a walk. When you’re done, there’s no better feeling than coming in from the cool air, knowing you are truly in for the day. - (BPT)

Easy Ways to Say “I Love You”
If gift-giving isn’t your strong suit, occasions like Valentine’s Day are likely to bring on stress and worry, but procrastinating will only serve to elevate your unease. Follow these steps to simplify your shopping, and while you may not come to love the task of finding the perfect gift, your loved one will undoubtedly appreciate your effort. Browse for ideas online. Many retailers offer special promotions and gift idea sections on their websites, so finding inspiration can be as easy as visiting the sites of your loved one’s favorite stores. There are also dozens of articles online to help get the ideas flowing. Searches such as “gifts for horse lovers” or “Valentine’s gifts for a new boyfriend” will reveal a long list of ideas to peruse. Keep it simple. Although the advertising industry works hard to convince consumers otherwise, Valentine’s Day isn’t really all about the bling. Sure, a pretty bauble is a welcome gift, but there are plenty of ways to show your affection that don’t require spending a month’s salary. A heartfelt card paired with a memento of a meaningful event or place in your relationship sends the same loving sentiment. Make it a (different) date. For many couples, navigating the demands of
work, kids and life make spending time together a luxury. Instead of fighting crowds at busy restaurants on the official date, celebrate your love on a day of your own choosing, when you can relax and enjoy the time together without the pressure to rush through dessert so your table can be flipped for the next waiting couple. Give blooms a boost. A dozen long-stem red roses is a beautiful gesture, but unless your intended rose receiver is a strictly traditional type, try adding a little spice to your floral arrangement. Go for a bouquet in her favorite color, or have the flowers arranged in a practical vessel she can reuse to remember the occasion, such as a cocktail shaker or a watering can. Go ahead, gift yourself. It may seem counter-intuitive, but finding a gift you’ll enjoy may inspire an idea for your loved one. The trick is finding something you can share together, whether it’s tickets to a show or his and hers mugs for enjoying your favorite brew. Just be sure the item is something your intended will share your enthusiasm for, or you may as well go buy a blender. Find more ideas to simplify every occasion at eLivingToday.com. (Family Features)

Add touches that show your child’s personality and create a personalized themed basket all about them. Include fun items that make their favorite activity more special - from festive colored pencils for the artist to a new baseball glove for the athlete, personalized baskets help make the celebration much more fun. Sweeten the deal with your child’s favorite treats such as new HERSHEY’S Milk Chocolate; KIT KAT AND REESE’S Assortment Heart Box; JOLLY RANCHER Bites; or REESE’S Peanut Butter Cup Miniatures 7-oz. Heart Box. Playing Pretend Basket Reading is a great way to spend time with your kids. Make the simple gifts exciting again and fill a basket with your favorite books and corresponding props for your little cuties this Valentine’s Day. Read the books together and use the props to create sweet memories, reenacting your favorite parts of the story together. Spend Valentine’s Day playing pretend with your little ones - from discovering new worlds, befriending dragons to building fairy fortresses out of pillows, playing pretend will create special moments that will last a lifetime.
Fun and Games Basket Spending time with your loved ones is a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Create a game night basket the whole family is sure to love. Make things a little more fun by creating your own game or playing an old classic using HERSHEY’S Milk Chocolate Hearts filled with Caramel as playing pieces. You can even play tic-tac-toe or checkers using HERSHEY’S Milk Chocolate Hearts and HERSHEY’S KISSES Milk Chocolates as the tokens. This Valentine’s Day basket is a sure what to make game night a whole lot sweeter. Sprinkle Your Valentine with Love Basket What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with an activity you can do together? Pull together a fun basket of goodies with different ingredients for a delicious baked good you can make together. Need inspiration? Top Ten Valentines Gifts for Women By Debra Proctor Choose from the top ten Valentines Gifts for women and you can’t go wrong. Women place much more importance on Valentine’s Day than men do, so the last thing you want to do is gloss over this important day. Show her she’s special by giving her one of the best Valentine’s gifts possible. Here’s a list of the top ten Valentines gifts for women to give you some great ideas. #1 - Get Away Trip For the Valentines experience of a lifetime, treat her to a romantic getaway trip. You can go all out and book a trip to St. Maarten or Belize or stay local and have a romantic weekend at a bed and breakfast or spa. Either way, she’ll know she’s special with a gift like this. #2 - Flowers There’s not a woman alive who doesn’t appreciate flowers and now giving flowers is easier than ever. You can go the traditional route and order from your local florist or save some time and order online. If you love the idea of giving her flowers but need to save some cash, most grocery and discount stores have live bouquets. Pick a pretty bouquet, choose one of the vases, add a pretty bow and you’re all set. #3 - Handcrafted Gift Are you handy? If you are, think about your hobby and how you can use it to create a one-of-a-kind gift. If you’re not so handy, shop local stores that sell handcrafted items. You’ll usually find these tucked away in shopping strips or in the historic or tourist section of town. If you prefer to shop online, try Etsy. com. This entire website is filled with all handcrafted items for you to choose from. #4 - Personalized Gift When you give a personalized gift, it tells the woman you love that you went the extra mile and actually put some thought into the gift. Shop websites like www.ThingsRemembered.com or www.PersonalCreations for items you can have engraved, monogrammed or to have a special picture turned into a canvas print. #5 - Jewelry Jewelry is right up there with candy and flowers. Your decision here revolves around your budget and what kind of statement you want to make. Fine jewelry shows a woman that you are getting pretty serious while less expensive fashion jewelry is just fun to receive. Shop for fine jewelry at stores like Jared.com, Zales.com and Kay.com. You can find a good assortment of pretty fashion jewelry at any major department store. Necklaces and
bracelets are easiest to buy as you don’t have to get a certain size. #6 - Breakfast in Bed If you want to really impress the women in your life, treat her to breakfast in bed. Clueless about what to cook and how to do it? Let AskMen. com give you some help with their breakfast in bed article. #7 - Love Letter Writing a love letter might make you feel silly, but your loved one will be thrilled. For those of you who need help doing this (and who doesn’t?) read this article on How to Write a Love Letter> for step-by-step instructions. #8 - Romantic Dinner Do you have a special restaurant as a couple? Where did you go for your first date? Make reservations at your special restaurant or recreate your first date and relive the memories. Women love taking trips down memory lane. #9 - Creative Dates If the love of your life is adventurous, dinner and a movie won’t impress her. Instead, give her the thrill of a lifetime by planning something adventurous and exciting. Look creatively at the area you live. What are the special tourist attractions? Do you live in wine country? Take a tour of a winery and have a picnic complete with wine and cheese. Is it warm in your part of the country on Valentine’s Day? Try whitewater rafting. For thrill seekers, set up a date for bungee jumping, hang gliding, hot air balloon or a helicopter ride. #10 - Candy Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but let’s face it, all women love chocolate. Wow her with a gourmet chocolate assortment like Godiva Gold Gourmet Chocolate Gift Basket
or Homemade Gourmet Chocolate Candy Bars. The main thing to remember about giving a gift that makes a lasting impression on the woman you love, is the thought. The special woman in your life will be happy as long as
she knows you put some thought into choosing the gift and that it comes from the heart. Use this list of top ten Valentines Day gifts for ideas and you’ll soon find the perfect gift for that perfect woman in your life.
