Anaheim Lake Fishing at Anaheim lake is open 7 days a week for day and night sessions. No fishing license is required and sessions cost $25 per adult (ages 13-51) with a 5 fish limit. This 24-hour pier is 150 feet long and sits next to Dana Point Harbor Park. This is an excellent location for parents with kids just learning to fish. Facilities include a fish-cleaning table, benches, restrooms and a snack bar that also sells bait. Types of fish caught here include bonito, surfperch, jacksmelt and corbino. Lake Cuyamaca This San Diego County lake is 110 acres and surrounded by Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. It’s stocked with trout yearlong, and you can get free fishing classes here on Saturdays. Lake Cuyamaca is open from 6:00 in the morning and closes at sunset, seven days a week. Fish that are stocked or can be found here: Florida-strain Largemouth Bass, Trout, Smallmouth Bass, Channel Catfish, Crappie, Sturgeon and Bluegill. State Fishing Licenses are required for people over 16 years of age, and lake permits are 6.00 for adults and 3.50 for kids. If you don’t have a state license, annual ones can be purchased there for 37.50 and day licenses for 12.10. RV campsites and tent campsites are also available for camping for a fee, and boats are available for rent.

For information: call 760-765-0515. Miramar Resevoir This fishing spot is located about 18 miles North of San Diego and at its peak fullness as 4 shoreline miles and a max depth of 114 feet. You can rent boats here on the weekends, and fishing can be done from boats, float tubes (with restrictions) and from the shoreline. Miramar Resevoir is open sunrise to sunset year round. Fish that are stocked or can be found here: Florida-strain Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Sunfish, Trout and Channel Catfish. Limits and catch limitations: 12 inch size for bass, and limits are 5 fish for trout, 5 fish for catfish, 25 fish for crappie, and the rest are limitless. For information: call 619-465-FISH.

Dixon Lake Located in Escondido, this San Diego County lake is open year round, from 6:00 am to dusk. During the summer night fishing may be permitted but call in advance for the latest information. Entry fee for car/vans/motorcycles is 5.00 and for vehicles over 20 feet (including buses) is 10.00. Senior citizens are free. Fish that are stocked or can be found here: Trout, Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Crappie, Channel Catfish. Along with a Califorina Fishing License, the rate for fishing here is 7.00 for people over 16 years, 5.00 for

seniors and kids from 8 to 15 years, and children under 8 is free. Boats can be rented here. For information: call 760-839-4680. Lake Jennings This resevoir supplies the Helix area and is open currently for fishing Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 6:30 until around 6 or 7 pm (call for current hours). Fish that are stocked or can be found here: Trout, Catfish, Bass. Besides a California Fishing License, a daily fishing permit for Lake Jennings is 8.00 for adults, 3.00 for youth (8 to 16 years), and children under 7 fish for free. Seniors permits are 7.00. Boats may be rented here For information: call 619-443-2510. Lake Murray This lake is inside Mission Trails Regional Park located in between La Mesa and Santee. When at max fullness, this lake has 3.2 miles of shoreline and a depth of 95 feet with 171 surface acres. Fish that are stocked or can be found here: Florida-strain Largemouth Bass, Black Crappie, Bluegill, Channel Catfish, Trout. Limits and catch limitations: 12 inch size for bass, and limits are 5 fish for trout, 5 fish for catfish, 25 fish for crappie, and the rest are limitless.

eggstravaganza mother’s club event at the coto valley country club The Coto Mother’s Club (CMC) will hold their Annual EGGStravaganza in Coto de Caza on Saturday, March 26, from 8:00 -11:00 am. It takes place at the Coto Valley Country Club, located in The Village at 2331 Via Venado. This is a community-wide Easter event that offers all Coto de Caza residents FREE entertainment while also benefiting a wonderful charity close to our hearts, Autism Speaks. In an effort to increase awareness in the growing autism community, and in support of several families within our own CMC membership, 25% of all proceeds from the event will be donated to Autism Speaks. This year’s EGGStravaganza features the return of many family favorites including a massive EGG Hunt with over 6,000 goodie-stuffed eggs for different ages, an Easter Bunny, several bounce houses, a face painter, a petting zoo and a trackless train! This year’s event is made possible through the generous sponsorship of Universal Protection Service, Coto’s community gate and patrol service. The members of the Coto Mother’s Club extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone at UPS for helping make this event possible! The start times by age group for the Egg Hunt are below. Creating a pollinator-friendly habitat in your backyard Pollinators such as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, bats and beetles play an important role in producing healthy plants and food for people and wildlife. Without pollinators feeding on nectar and moving pollen from one flower to the next, most plants would not produce fruit or seeds. You can attract pollinators to your lawn and garden by following these

steps to create a pollinator-friendly backyard habitat. * Grow a diverse assortment of trees, shrubs and flowers. Place water sources throughout your lawn and garden to draw a variety of pollinators to your yard, while providing them with food and sheltered nesting areas. * Add color to your backyard. Each

pollinator is drawn to specific plants based on its size, shape, color and scent. Bees are attracted to yellow and blue flowers, as well as fruit and nut trees with strong fragrances. Hummingbirds prefer large red or orange tubular flowers with no odor. * Select flowering plants that bloom at different times to provide nectar sources throughout the growing

season. Place plants in clumps to supply large areas of color and coverage that attracts pollinators. * Choose plants native to your area to encourage healthy pollination activity. In the South, flowers from mint, oregano, lavender and other herbs attract bees, while pink azaleas and coral honeysuckle vines entice hummingbirds into your yard. In the Northwest, birds are drawn to flowering grape holly shrub and blue columbine flowers will draw butterflies into your outdoor space. Pay attention to how you apply lawn and garden products. “When using insecticides, carefully read and follow label directions to protect pollinators,” says Aaron Hobbs, president of RISE (Responsible Industry for a Sound Environment) a national organization representing the manufacturers, formulators and distributors of pesticide and fertilizer products. Pollinators are as essential as sunlight and water in the production of flowering plants, many of which are important food sources. Support your backyard ecosystem while attracting pollinator populations and surrounding your home with colorful arrays of native plants.

Disney’s NEWSIES Makes Its Long Anticipated Costa Me sa Premiere Disney’s NEWSIES will play an exclusive two-week premiere engagement at Segerstrom Center for the Arts with performances May 17 - 29, 2016 in Segerstrom Hall. Report Looks into What Lures New Anglers and What Keeps Them on the Hook ByAmerican SportfishingAssociation Not many activities offer as many opportunities for tranquil relaxation or exhilarating surges of adrenaline, but both types of experiences have about equal appeal when it comes to fishing. This, and other motivational factors, are illuminated in the third report in a series examining sportfishing “churn,” a term that refers to anglers’ transitioning in and out of the sport from year to year. The New AnglersProduced for the American Sportfishing Association (ASA) by Southwick Associates, the series sheds new light on anglers’ fishing habits and loyalty to the sport. The latest installment, The New Anglers – Who Are They? Why Did They Try? Will They Continue?, produced in partnership with Responsive Management, focuses on those new to the sport or trying it again after a long hiatus. “We’ve found that newcomers have high expectations about how often they will fish when they first begin, but reality shows they drop out at high rates,” said ASA President and CEO Mike Nussman, referring to the fact that 46 percent anglers in recent years do not fish the following year. Nussman further said, “At first glance, this implies their experiences may not have met their expectations, or other activities are winning their attention. The findings in this series of six reports are meant to help improve efforts to attract more anglers and keep them fishing.” As the first report in the series uncovered, the overall number of fishing participants remains quite stable from year to year, at around 46 million (which takes into account youth age 16 years and under), but not because most anglers are out there on the water. Rather it’s because about the same number of people join and leave the angling population each year. And since that come-and-go contingent is a big proportion of the

46 million, it’s of great significance to the sportfishing community’s efforts to boost participation. State fisheries agencies and the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) are taking the lead for the broader sportfishing community on a strategy called “R3,” which includes targeted marketing toward recruiting, retaining and reactivating anglers, categories that refer to participation from year to year. “With recruited and reactivated anglers making up more than 40 percent of all fishing license holders in any given year, there’s huge potential to grow participation, tackle sales and angler-generated conservation funding if those millions of newcomers keep fishing year to year,” noted Nussman. ASA also has another report available that specifically addresses the activities that compete for anglers’ attention – On the Fence: Why Anglers Lapse and Fishing’s Competition. What’s New The third report, The New Anglers – Who Are They? Why Did They Try? Will They Continue?, takes a closer

look at various demographic groups among recruited anglers vs. retained ones. It also examines motivational and other factors influencing people’s decisions related to fishing. Younger, female urban dwellers are more likely to be among the ranks of newly recruited anglers compared to retained anglers, who are much more likely to be male, rural residents, and over 35 years of age. Yet over the long term, there has been minimal shift in the overall angler population towards those newcomer demographics due to the higher churn rates among them. More than 80 percent of recruited anglers reported having fished previously in their lives, typically when they were quite young. They are frequently prompted to fish by family and friends, who also serve as their most common source of fishing information and instruction. These and other findings related to motivational factors tend to reassert previous research from ASA and RBFF. However, this report reveals significant differences between new anglers’ intentions and their actions while the vast majority think they will fish every year, only a small proportion actually do. Report Highlights • Women make up one-third of new anglers. When it comes to recruited anglers, 65 percent are male and 35 percent are female. However, only 18 percent of retained anglers are female. • Newcomers are younger. More than one-half of recruited anglers are under age 35, compared to 28 percent of retained anglers. Conversely, only 12 percent of recruited anglers are between the ages of 55 and 64, compared to 22 percent of retained anglers. • Recruited anglers tend to live in more populous communities. The largest portion of recruited anglers, about 47 percent, lives in suburban neighborhoods. However, the proportion of recruited anglers

between the ages of 18-24 years is greatest in rural areas while the proportion of recruited anglers between the ages of 25-34 years is greatest in urban areas. • Recreational togetherness is a strong appeal. The top three reasons people fish are to spend time with family and friends, to relax, and for the sport or recreation. For new recruits, the opportunity for relaxation is a strong driver while avid anglers tend to be in it for the excitement. • Age of introduction matters. More than 80 percent of recruited anglers in the survey year reported it was not the first year they’d ever fished. Among those, more than a third tried the sport when they were five years old or younger. In fact, more than half of anglers who fish year after year say they first started fishing when they were five years old or younger. • Others’ influence is strong. The majority of both recruited and retained anglers say their parents had the most influence on their interest in fishing and their learning. Other factors that commonly prompted participation were an invitation from a friend or relative and a desire to spend time outdoors. • Intentions don’t match up with actions. More than three-quarters of recruited anglers think they will go fishing each year over the next five years however, less than 10 percent are likely to do so. Southwick Associates compiled and studied fishing license data over a 10-year period, from 2004-2013, and a five-year period, from 20092013, from 12 states (CO, FL, GA, ME, MI, MN, MS, MT, NH, NY, UT, and WI) to provide a regionally and nationally representative portrait of anglers for this and future reports in the series. Responsive Management then followed with telephone surveys of current and former anglers to gain qualitative insights about their intentions and motivations.

Fishing with Your Kids The Best Way to Have an Enjoyable Experience Fishing By Carl Kolchak Fishing with your kids should be a fun family experience, but it often can turn into a tedious chore. Tangled lines, a lack of action, and the suggestion of going fishing with your kids can turn from excited looks into bored faces in a hurry. Trying to keep up, especially if you have more than two children, can run a parent ragged, as he or she tries to make sure lines are in the water and everybody is having a good time. Here are some tips to make sure that fishing with your kids is a worthwhile and enjoyable adventure. First and foremost, you need to catch fish. Nothing creates the potential for boredom more than a fishing pole that just sits there with no fish biting! Pretty soon the children are wondering why they are there to begin with and fishing with your kids goes from a great idea to a very bad one in a matter of a few minutes. There are many things you can do to increase your odds of catching fish, giving the kids the excitement that will keep their interest. Go fishing with the kids in the early morning or late afternoon; these are the peak times for most species of fish to bite. During the summer, after supper is the optimal time to gather the equipment and head to the local fishing spot. If the kids are too young to bait their own hooks and cast out, you need to forget about doing any fishing yourself and concentrate on their needs. It’s no fun for a kid to stand around and watch you fish. Proper equipment is crucial to success when fishing with your kids. Do not bother with those “kiddie” poles that cannot stand up to the rigors of actual fishing. An inexpensive spinning reel and rod will do the trick; you aren’t going after world records, you simply want to catch fish. A spinning reel is the easiest type for a youngster to learn to cast with. If they are old enough to cast, make sure you put them in a spot way from trees and brush that will snag your child’s line and hook. Find an open area along the river bank or shore of the pond. Nothing is more frustrating while fishing than having to break your line, tie another hook on, rebait it and cast again, only to get caught up in the same branch or log! If you are fishing with your kids at a small pond, there are two species of fish that you can usually targetbullheads and pumpkinseeds. All you need for bait are night crawlers, which you can catch yourself on any damp

spring or early summer evening. Get the children involved in this, by letting them go out and catch them for themselves. All they need is a flashlight and a bit of coaching. Catching the worms will be almost as much fun as catching the fish. If you need to buy your bait, many convenience stores actually sell worms during the fishing season. Night crawlers can be kept in a container in your refrigerator for weeks; only be sure that everyone knows what is in that container to avoid unwanted surprises. Once you are at the pond, space the kids out so they will have their own areas to fish and avoid tangling their lines. You do not need to use floats or bobs. Have a number four snelled hook tied to the line with a pair of split shots secured about eighteen inches up from the hook. A snelled hook is a hook that comes already attached to a short piece of monofilament with a loop tied at the end. You can tie it right to your line; the number of the hook, in this case a number four, is an indicator of the hook’s size. The split shot will give you or your child added weight on the line, allowing the line to be cast further. Hook the night crawler on and cast out. Place a forked stick into the ground and lean the pole against it. When the fish bite, your child will see the line start to move. It will either begin to go out as the fish runs with the bait or there will be a distinct jerking motion that your child can easily detect as the end of the rod as

it snaps back and forth. Now is when you have your child pick up the rod and try to set the hook. Teach them not to simply reel the line in, but to give the line a good, quick yank in an attempt to hook the fish. They will be able to tell in an instant if the fish is on by the tension and feel of the line. Have them reel in, but not too fast, always being sure not to let the line go slack. Pumpkinseeds, a common pond dweller, are small in size, but their streamlined shape allows them to put up a great fight for their stature. They will zigzag to and fro in the water until your child can land them. They have sharp spines on their back fins that need to be avoided. It is important for your child to learn how to properly handle a fish once it has been caught, so as to be able to release it unharmed. Show your child how to hold the fish and remove the hook, teaching them not to be afraid of doing this. Until your child is old enough to handle this alone, you will be doing the removing, as well as putting on the worm and casting out. Bullhead will bite one right after another on a good day, and they can keep you running from child to child as they land them or lose them. Let your child either catch the fish or be responsible for it getting away, as this will help them learn what they did right or wrong. They will get a feel for when the fish are biting, when to set the hook, and how fast to reel in. Eventually, they will be able to hold the pole and know when the fish are biting, without

having to lean it against the stick. If you are going to be fishing with your kids at a river, add more split shots so you can cast out further. Rivers are more unpredictable in that there are many more species of fish that can be caught; trout, bass, white and yellow perch, suckers, pumpkinseed, and carp are commonly caught on night crawlers here in the Northeast. The potential is there for your kid to hook some decent sized fish; avoid the temptation to jump in and land the “big one”. Fishing with your kids at a river can be made even more fun by assigning each species of fish a point value. The more desirable the fish, such as a bass or trout, the higher number it is assigned. Have your kids keep track of how many points they have accumulated, with some sort of reward or prize going to the winner. Teach them to be sure to leave the pond shore or riverbank the way they found it, litter and garbage free. If the fish are not biting, a pair of binoculars can come in handy as there is bound to be something of interest around the water, whether it’s a kingfisher, a mallard, or a muskrat. Fishing with your kids can be great fun, enhanced by their learning to appreciate the outdoors and actually catching fish. Put yourself and your children in a situation where they have the best chance to succeed, and you and they will look forward to spending this time together long after they have grown up!

EPA wrong to reduce public notices, news organizations say The Coto de Caza News joined CNPA and 42 news organizations and the Public Notice Resource Center to offer comments on the Environmental Protection Agency’s intention to reduce the public notice it provides in connection with most Clean Air Act actions. The EPA’s intent is to eliminate the requirement that the notices run in local newspapers near the potential sources of pollution EPA is planning to approve. The EPA based its proposal on the mistaken assumption that citizens affirmatively seek public notices and will regularly visit its website to learn about its plans, the PNRC noted. The comments also emphasize that for over 200 years, lawmakers have required public notices to be published in newspapers because they offer the best opportunity to reach local, civically engaged readers who are most likely to have a personal interest in the plans and activities described in the notices. “If EPA moves forward with this proposal, it will increase the likelihood that the people who stand to feel the greatest impact from its decisions will be left in the dark until it’s too late,” said Bradley L. Thompson II,

president of PNRC. “The Agency’s determination to inform citizens about its plans by posting notices in obscure corners of its website isn’t sufficiently transparent. It is especially unfortunate when pollsters tell us people are suspicious of Washington.

Keeping these notices local in places where readers will find them is a good way to combat public cynicism.” PNRC is a nonprofit organization that provides research and public education materials on the use of public notice in newspapers. It is

Freshwater Fishing in Southern California

San Diego has something for everyone from sight seeing to camping. Even fishermen and women can enjoy San Diego with over twenty lakes and reservoirs as well as ocean piers, almost every type of fish can be caught. This article offers five of the more well known lakes around San Diego County. Two excellent and well thought out web sites to help the fisherman find out where they really want to go and what to expect during their trip are www.sdfish.com and www.californiafishingonline.com. So grab the rod and tackle, wrangle up the bait and let’s explore five of San Diego’s highest rated fishing destinations: Lake Dixon: Located up in Escondido with seventy acres of fishing. This lake is open year around and offers night fishing during the summer months. The fees range from $3 to $5 and offers shore fishing. Boat rentals are available as well as a bait shop on the premises. Lake El Capitan aka El Capitan Reservoir: Over fifteen hundred acres of fishing and picnicking. The lake is open Friday through Sunday and offers twenty-two miles of shoreline along with a maximum water depth of one hundred ninety-seven. There are no concession stands available,

but there are vending machines. The staff of El Capitan sells bait and fishing licenses and a day use permit is sold at the entrance. Lake Hodges: Located in Del Mar with over twelve hundred acres. This lake offers boat rentals as well as allowing use of private boats with only paying a small launch fee. There are no concession stands available and the staff handles the permit purchase at the docks available. Lower Otay Lake: Down in the South Bay location of San Diego, this lake gives the fisherman over twelve hundred acres of fishing, both from the shore and by boat. The lake has a concession stand located in the picnic grounds. This is one of the few lakes that allow dogs (leashed) to enjoy a day with their family as long they are kept fifty feet away from the water. Boat rentals and permits are sold be the lake staff. If wishing to use a private boat, the lake does charge a launch fee. Lake Miramar: This lake is open ten months a year (only closed in October and November). With one hundred and sixty-two acres, shore fishing and boat fishing abound. Boat rentals are available on the weekends only and private boats are welcome at any time. The concession stand

sells permit and bait (including tackle) and also sells basic items. There are barbeque sites available in the picnic area. All of these lakes are stocked with a variety of fish including but not limited to large mouth bass, rainbow trout, catfish and crappie. Each site does have a limit to the amount of fish that can be caught and each are clearly listed where the permits are sold. Irvine Lake Irvine Lake is a reservoir in Orange County, California, United States. The lake is on Santiago Creek, located in Silverado, California, east of the city of Irvine and close to Irvine Regional Park. The lake is formed by the Santiago Dam at the lake’s north end, which was built between 1929 and 1931, and the lake was originally called the Santiago Reservoir. The dam

was built by the Irvine Company (the private developers of the city of Irvine) and the Serrano Irrigation District (now called the Serrano Water District); it is now administered jointly by the Serrano Water District and the Irvine Ranch Water District. The lake provides drinking water to Villa Park and some parts of Orange, and provides supplementary irrigation water to neighbouring ranches. Access to the lake is via Santiago Canyon Road, the road leading from Orange to Silverado. The Cleveland National Forest is on the northeast side of the lake. Stocked with largemouth bass, catfish, trout and crappie, the lake fishery opened to the public in 1941. The land around the lake is owned by the Irvine Company, which leases the fishing, boating, and camping concessions to SWD Recreation Inc.

Lake Shasta Fishing and Vacation Information By Kimberly Sharpe Lake Shasta, nestled beside the snow-capped Mount Shasta in northern California, spans 29,500 acres and boasts 370 miles of shoreline. The lake has diverse fishing opportunities with abundant rainbow trout, brown trout, crappie, kokanee salmon, king salmon, catfish, sturgeon, bluegill, spotted bass, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Considered a true fishermen’s mecca, the lake offers boat fishing and shoreline fishing choices. The largest man-made lake in California, Lake Shasta has a maximum fishing depth of 512 feet. Construction of the lake was completed in 1945 and the lake was officially filled in 1948. Four rivers, known as arms, empty into the lake. The McCloud river, Squaw creek, Sacramento river and Pit river flow into the lake and create its unique large arms which gives Lake Shasta its irregular shoreline appearance. Innumerable mountain streams and spring runoff sites also empty into the lake. Marinas and Boat Launches Lake Shasta’s shoreline is dotted with 11 marinas. Each one offers boat docking and tackle supplies for

anglers. Around the lake fishermen will find seven public boat launches. There is a minimal fee charged to launch a boat from any of the ramps. The ever changing seasonal water level of the lake dictates which boat launches will be open. If the water level is low a few launches may be closed. The Shasta Lake Visitor Information Centers monitor and provide boaters with current boat launch information. Each boat launch features ample parking for vehicles and boat trailers. Courtesy docks are available at the boat launch site to load gear and passengers into the boat. Fishing Locations Fishermen tend to congregate around the area of the arms that empty into the lake to catch fish. The McCloud river arm draws fishermen wishing to catch brown trout, according to the California Game & Fish. The fish spawn in the McCloud river in the fall and begin to enter Shasta lake using the river’s inlet during November and December when their spawning cycle is complete. Planted Fish Every year the California Department of Fish and Game plants over 30,000 rainbow trout into Lake Shasta. Many of the marinas around the lake also raise rainbow trout in underwater cages until they reach magnum size before releasing them into the lake. Native rainbow trout can be found congreting near the mountain streams that drain into the lake and beside the arms where

they breed. Shore Fishing The Lake Shasta area offers shoreline fishing locations. Along the Sacramento Arm, off Lancaster Drive, fishermen will find easy access to simply walk down to the shore and cast a line. The upper portions of the McCloud arm are also readily accessible on foot with trails that lead down to the shore side. Winter months offer an ideal time for shoreline trout fishing because the fish rise up along the waters surface beside the shoreline in search of food.
