‘ The Money Pit’ Movie Home!
One of the most infamous homes in movie history is for sale. The Money Pit home on Long Island is for sale. Not the movie version as seen in the 1986 movie with Tom Hanks and Shelley Long but the real life version, more a candidate for House Beautiful than Disaster Survival Magazine. More popular than ever before is the trend of flipping an investment house or buying an aging one stuck in another decade with the idea of turning it into your dream home. Anyone who is mesmerized by the idea of restoring an old house should first watch The Money Pit. Though exaggerated as filmdom will do to hold an audience’s attention - not so quick. Take another look. Tom and Shelley (as Walter and Anna in the movie) might have fallen through floors and set the house on fire due to worn-out wiring while we howled with mirth, but many do-it-yourselfers are falling through boards and igniting wiring every day, but their howling comes from anguish. It was easy to see why Walter and Anna fell in love with The Money Pit home’s potential. The house, that in real life was owned by Olympic gold medalist Eric Ridder, was grand at 14,000 square feet and wonderfully located in a preferred enclave on Long Island, close to Manhattan. It had a show-stopping entry with grand staircase and large formal rooms opening to the left and the right. It had all the attributes of the Gilded Age lady it was, even if the “lady” were more “bag” than gilded. They were able to grab it for only $200,000 and felt they had managed to steal the bargain of the century. Life was good. At first. Throughout the film we vicariously lived the redo process with them laughing at their inexperience and foibles. Fortunately, the destructive mess made out of
the house by the contractors was filmed on studio sound stages and not in the actual mansion. When the couple managed to get through the film’s restoration that lasted over four months instead of the two weeks they were promised, it had almost destroyed their relationship as it does so many in real life. But they bounced back and ended up getting married standing in front of their dream house. After the film crew finally left, the house still needed massive repairs. Fortunately, a real life couple came along and bought the 1898 mansion named Northway, and though it is doubtful they paid anywhere as low as the $200,000 film version for the 5.5-acre estate, they immediately got to work on the house the right way. It took four years of hard work by the best designers, decorators and contractors to turn it into a jewel box that script writers and set designers for The Money Pit could never have imagined. Now for sale as its best possible self, every detail has been addressed from its elaborate moldings to its gleaming ebony wood floors to the formal gardens and the soft sound of fountains. The 23-room home has seven large ensuite bedrooms plus a four-room master suite, an eat-in kitchen, eight fireplaces including one in the grand foyer, large formal rooms, study, pool and pool house. The mansion’s brick terrace overlooking the gardens and woods is a perfect place to sit and ponder your next home improvement task. No longer a fixer upper as portrayed in the 1986 film The Money Pit, Long Island’s Northway estate is priced at $5.9 million. The listing agents are Lois Kirschenbaum and Margaret Trautmann of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s in Locust Valley, New York. www.toptenrealestatedeals.com The Coto de Caza News

5 smart steps to preserving brain health Everyone knows aerobic exercise gets the heart pumping and lifting weights keeps muscles strong. But when it comes to keeping the brain healthy, most people are unsure what to do. As you age, brain health and maintaining memory functions becomes a top concern. Turns out, these issues may begin sooner than you think. “We tend to think about memory decline as an older person’s issue, but that’s not the case at all,” says Dr. Aimee Gould Shunney, a licensed naturopathic doctor specializing in women’s health and family medicine. “There was a study published in 2012 in the British Medical Journal that examined cognitive function in people age 45 to 70. The researchers did not expect it, but they found evidence of cognitive decline in the 45-yearold participants as well as the older participants.” She notes there are two basic pathological processes that cause degeneration of the brain: oxidative stress and inflammation. Basically, the standard American diet and lifestyle contribute to those processes. So who is this really an issue for? Men and women of all ages. No matter your age, you can take charge of your brain health by following these five smart steps from Dr. Shunney: Healthy eating “A Mediterranean-type diet that focuses on whole foods, good fats and foods high in antioxidants is a great place to start,” says Dr. Shunney. She encourages her patients to focus on getting omega-3 fats from fish and monounsaturated fats from olives, olive oil, nuts and seeds. She also recommends increasing fruits (especially berries) and beans (they’re packed with antioxidants).
What’s more, research shows a little cocoa, coffee and red wine can act as antioxidants and are beneficial in low to moderate amounts. Supplements In addition to a quality multivitamin, Dr. Shunney recommends an omega-3 supplement. “Getting enough omega3s is one of the most important measures we can take,” she says. “DHA is the dominant omega-3 in the brain. Just like we need to make sure babies have enough DHA to grow their brain, we need to make sure older people get enough DHA to keep their brains healthy.” She suggests Omega Memory by Nordic Naturals. It’s a DHA-dominant omega-3 formula that also includes other brain healthy ingredients: curcumin, phosphatidylcholine and huperzine A. Learn more at www. nordicnaturals.com. Regular sleep Poor sleep is a risk factor for cognitive decline. “Studies show both sleep deprivation and sleeping too much impact cognitive performance,” Dr. Shunney says. “A good goal is to go to bed around the same time each night, sleep for 7-8 hours, and
get up around the same time every morning.” Thinking activities “I recommend anything that keeps your mind working,” says Dr. Shunney. “Activities that require things to be arranged or puzzles that have to be put together. Crossword puzzles, word games and board games are all great.” She also notes some activities to avoid: “It’s important to limit certain activities. The constant scanning of social media and newsfeeds eliminates creativity and keeps us on edge. Limit the time you spend doing that and instead do things that cause you to explore and think and put ideas together on your own.” Socialize “Social isolation has been linked with cognitive decline,” says Dr. Shunney. “In one study, people who were lonely experienced cognitive decline at a 20 percent faster rate than people who were not lonely.” Make time to take a foreign language class, join a Toastmaster’s Club, take a watercolor class anything that connects you regularly to other people. - (BPT)

New culinary school opens at OC Fair & Event Center as a free community program A new cutting-edge cooking academy launched at OC Fair & Event Center to empower underserved youth through free culinary education and mentorship. A commercial kitchen on the fairgrounds is being transformed into Hatch Culinary Lab. The new education program is a partnership between OC Fair & Event Center (OCFEC), CulinaryLab C o o k i n g S c h o o l , A n a h e i m ’s Innovative Mentorship Experience program (AIME) and Spectra, the Fair’s master concessionaire. OCFEC is investing an initial $54,000 in equivalent value in this community program that this year will provide up to 50 students with training in everything from knife skills, cookery basics and making healthy meals to safety and sanitation. The spring session will started Feb. 28 with the first 20 students from Kennedy, Savanna and Western high schools working for eight weeks. A summer internship program and fall certification series will follow, culminating in an event to feed the local homeless community. “We have an opportunity to change the lives of students through Hatch Culinary Lab and it is important for us to step in to help,” said OCFEC CEO Kathy Kramer. “Here at the OC Fair we love food, so this program is close to our hearts and ties in perfectly with our community give-back mission. I look forward to growing this program Page 10
to include training for both kitchen staff and front-of-the-house positions.” The team from CulinaryLab in Tustin is donating staff and time to the program and has created new curriculum tailored to provide students with the basics on how food works, healthy cooking skills and simple recipes they can practice at home with minimal cost and prep time. The goal is to excite students about cooking and food service and empower them to be confident individuals ready to secure employment. “At CulinaryLab, we do everything we can to immerse students in the world of cooking with experimentation, tons of repetitive hands-on practice, and by involving local chef partners in the teaching process,” said Chef Ryan Wagner. “The goal of the Hatch program is to bring that same highlevel culinary education to high school students who might otherwise not have access to it.” The OCFEC commercial kitchen has been revamped from a solely commercial facility to a fully-equipped teaching kitchen with additional cooking stations, appliances, storage, tables and cookware. The approx. 6,500 sq. ft. facility is operated by Spectra and manager Juan Quintero says the company will also donate kitchen labor, such as dishwashers, to support the program. “The Spectra team is excited to
The Coto de Caza News
be part of this community education program. This is really a win-win situation for us,” said Quintero. “Not only do we get to work with the student chefs and see their transformation, but we want to hire program graduates to work at the OC Fair doing kitchen prep and cooking for special events.” Students from Anaheim Unified School District’s AIME program have been selected to participate in the first Hatch Culinary Lab sessions. More than 70 percent of AIME students come from economically challenged backgrounds and spend their time outside of school assisting their families, either at home or by working. The program will provide transportation and additional supervision for Hatch students. There are plans for the program to expand through partnerships with Costa Mesa and Santa Ana school districts to serve up to 80 students annually. Wagner estimated that students will gain up to $20,000 worth of culinary education through the Hatch program and he is seeking to secure restaurant partners to help further students’ training. About CulinaryLab Cooking School CulinaryLab is a forward-focused cooking school where timeless techniques meet cutting-edge curriculum and real-world training to cook up bold, contemporary cuisine. CulinaryLab’s Chef Ryan Wagner is a Certified Executive Chef with 23 years of food and beverage experience, including running restaurant kitchens, high-profile event catering and various leadership roles in culinary education. Taki n g the stress ou t of a job tra n sfe r m o v e A job transfer usually is a good thing. Hopefully the transfer signals a promotion as you take your career a step further up the ladder, bringing about new and fun challenges in the workplace. But the transition itself is often not easy, especially if it involves moving your home and family to a new location. Businesses often give transferred employees less than two weeks (11 days) to accept a transfer offer and once accepted, an average of 33 days to move and report to the new job, according to Worldwide ERC, a professional association for workforce mobility. That isn’t much time to find a new home, put the old home up for sale or subleasing and plan a move that could be across town, across state lines or across the country. Resources are available to help ease the stress of your job transfer. They include: * Your company - Before you accept the job transfer offer, check with your human resources department on what services or financial compensation your company offers. Many companies outsource relocation services or cover selected services like providing rental moving trucks for employees. Be aware that the average cost of shipping household goods for a domestic transfer was around $12,459 in 2012, according to Worldwide ERC. * Truck rental - Much of the moving process involves the transfer of
your household goods. Truck rental companies like Penske help to make this process much easier. For example, Penske, which is a member of Worldwide ERC, has a dedicated customer service and sales team within its existing call center to serve the specialized needs of employee relocations. The company also added services like moving labor to help customers load and unload the rental trucks, new self-storage options for movers and customized billing options for each of these services to make the corporate transfer much smoother. “Time, cost and ease of use are of the essence with an employee relocation move,” says Don Mikes, senior vice president of rental for Penske. “We have a solid solution to make the process easy ranging from rental trucks, towing equipment and moving supplies to services beyond the truck such as self-storage and moving labor.” * House hunting - Searching for a new home could be the most stressful part of relocating. Many employees will opt for temporary housing like apartments or extended-stay hotels for the first couple months of the transfer. This allows them to get a feel for the community and take the time to review homes for sale. However, if you prefer to purchase a home right way, contact the human resources department at your new location to ask for real estate agents
referrals. Also take your search online. Between MLS listings with photos and online mapping tools, you can narrow your search quickly to preferred homes, allowing you to make an appointment once with your real estate agent to tour the homes and hopefully make an offer. * House selling - On the other end of the spectrum, you also have a home to sell. Many homeowners are opting to hire a management company and rent out the home, with the intent to sell in the future once they have their life organized in the new location and have the time to list the home with
a real estate agent. Management companies handle the review of rental applicants, the background checks, collect the rent and take care of any emergency maintenance concerns that might occur, allowing the homeowner to concentrate his energies on the new job. The job transfer process may feel overwhelming, but with these resources available to assist you with the transfer, you’ll find yourself quickly settling into the new office and digging into the challenges of the new job. - (BPT)

Fuel your day with 5 energizing superfoods With groggy eyes and slow movements, you peel yourself out of bed each day. Between the morning and afternoon slumps, you long for the energy of your youth. Does this sound familiar? Then you’ll be glad to know about five superfoods that can help energize you from the inside out, so you can feel your best all day. As a registered dietician, nutrition expert at On Target Living, and author of the newly released cookbook “Target To Table: Delicious & Healthy Meals One Superfood at a Time,” Kristen Johnson understands that food plays a big role in health and wellness, and believes there’s no such thing as anti-aging - only aging well. Here are the five energizing superfoods Johnson recommends to fuel your body the healthy way. 1. Ancient grains “Ancient grains have remained virtually untouched and unchanged for thousands of years compared to modern wheat or corn that’s been bred for higher yield and drought resistance,” says Johnson. Ancient grains are extremely high in protein, fiber and minerals. Johnson notes these grains can be helpful in managing inflammation and are a great source of energizing B vitamins for the brain and body. Ancient grains include spelt, quinoa, chia, amaranth, buckwheat, wheat berries, kamut, freekah, bulgur, barley, sorghum, teff, millet, oats, wild Page 16
rice and farro. These grains can be used to make hot dishes similar to oatmeal, or can be cooked and used in salads and entrees. 2. Omega-3 fats “Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the human cell, meaning they supply the body with energy. The better you feed the mitochondria, the healthier and better performing the cell will be,” explains Johnson. “Cell membranes must be permeable to allow the cell to be fed and allow ‘fuel’ for the mitochondria. The omega-3 fats EPA & DHA found in fish and algae are a great way to make the cell soft and permeable. This will help to fuel the body and improve energy and stamina.” Our bodies cannot make omega-3 fats naturally, and therefore they must come from food or supplements, notes Johnson. “Because fresh, cold-water, wild-caught fish is not always available, I often recommend a high-quality supplement like Nordic Naturals orange-flavored Arctic Cod Liver Oil,” says Johnson. Cod liver oil has naturally occurring vitamin D that is needed to absorb calcium, an important factor for bone health. Nordic Naturals Arctic Cod Liver Oil is a great source of the omega-3s EPA and DHA that help contributes to a healthy heart and brain, hormonal balance, and a healthy immune response. Simply take 1 tablespoon daily or add to your
The Coto de Caza News
smoothies or salad dressings. 3. Spirulina and chlorella “Spirulina and chlorella are freshwater algae that are super high in chlorophyll, which is extremely energizing for the body,” says Johnson. “Because spirulina and chlorella are cell-builders, they also help to build the immune system and can help prevent you from getting sick.” Spirulina and chlorella are also very cleansing and detoxifying, which helps improve digestion. Because both are high in protein, they are also great for vegans. Swallow (don’t chew) the tablets with water 15-20 minutes prior to eating. Aim for 10-20 tablets a day. 4. Cacao Cacao is the raw, unprocessed form of chocolate. It is high in magnesium, manganese, zinc, and iron. Johnson notes that cacao has many potential health benefits, including supporting brain and heart health, mood, healthy body weight, and energy. Cacao can also enhance relaxation and promote a better night’s sleep. Because it is high in magnesium, it has also been shown to help build muscle and aid in muscle recovery. Cacao also contains more antioxidants than red wine, green tea and blueberries. Cacao nibs are easy to consume and can be mixed in oatmeal, smoothies or trail mix. You can also blend cacao nibs or cacao powder
with coconut or almond milk and a little bit of honey in a blender for a healthy version of chocolate milk or hot chocolate. 5. Coconut “Coconuts contain a healthy saturated fat high in lauric, capric, and caprylic acids, which have antiviral and antifungal properties and help contribute to healthy digestion,” says Johnson. “Coconuts also contain medium-chain fatty acids (MCTs) that can enhance energy and metabolism.” Coconut water, coconut milk and shredded coconut are all great options to add to your diet. Using virgin coconut oil is also a great way to sneak in more coconut when cooking, baking, or snacking. Simply use it in place of oil in cooking and butter in baking. It’s great for spreading on bread and for making popcorn, too. - (BPT)

Olive Crest Luncheon Reaches its 2,500th Adoption Milestone Steven Bernardy, Lois Verleur, and Randy Rider. Photos by: Katya Williams Photography Olive Crest Orange County once again hosted its highly-anticipated ‘THE POWER OF ONE” luncheon at the Grove of Anaheim, in celebration of National Adoption Month. Several hundred guests were in attendance to honor foster and adoptive families within Orange County. The State of California has the largest population of foster children, numbering over 56,000 with 2,400 in Orange County. All of these children have one dream in common, which is to be part of a safe home and forever family. As guests entered the main room of The Grove of Anaheim, a powerful and inspiring power point presentation, displayed on both screens, told the amazing story of the great work Olive Crest does within the community. Tim Bauer, Executive Director of Development for Olive Crest Orange County, welcomed the overflow crowd and talked about the event honoring “National Adoption Month.” In addition to the original Founders of Olive Crest, The Campos Family, Victoria Campos, Albert Campos, Damian Dr. Donald and Lois Verleur, both of whom were in attendance. Bauer went Campos, Melany Campos, and Carmen Campos. on to tell the story of over 44 years ago, when the Verleurs took in a couple of teenage girls to come live with them at their house because these girls could not live within their own homes. This year’s luncheon event was underwritten by Stan and Mary Frome of the Frome Family Foundation, Toyota of Huntington Beach, Union Bank, Diana and James Cavaricci of the Cavaricci Foundation, HUB International, Kylie Schuyler and Family, and Jeff and Shannon Mathews. With the assistance of Steven Bernardy, Olive Crest Trustee President and Randy Rider, Olive Crest Trustee Vice President, Bauer presented the Awards to this year’s group of Honorees which included PAAMCO, Orange County Superior Court Judge Dennis Keough, Kappa Delta San Diego, and Friends Church of Yorba Linda. “These individuals and organizations are inspirations who have volunteered their time and resources to help support our kids and their families,” stated Tim Bauer, Executive Director of Development for Olive Crest Honoree Orange County Superior Court Judge Dennis Keogh with Tim Bauer, Mrs. Flores and Mr. Flores. Orange County. “They represent the very best and outstanding examples of the personal power each of us has to change things to make a difference in our communities and in the lives of these kids,” Bauer continued. Kerri Dunkelberger, Executive Director of Olive Crest said, that Olive Crest had finalized its 2,500th adoption! What a milestone and what an accomplishment. Guests departed the luncheon on a high note, confident that Olive Crest would reach its next goal of its 5,000th adoption in the very near future. Since 1973, Olive Crest has transformed the lives of over 100,000 abused, neglected, and at-risk children and their families. With unwavering compassion, the Olive Crest family maintains a lifelong commitment to the youth and families they serve even after they have graduated from their programs. Olive Crest serves over 3,500 children and families each day throughout California, Nevada, and the Pacific Northwest. For more information, visit www.olivecrest.org. Celebrate Red Cross Month by giving blood in March During Red Cross Month in March, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to join in its lifesaving mission by giving blood. Since 1943, every U.S. president has designated March as Red Cross Month to recognize how the Red Cross helps people across the country and around the world. Red Cross Month is a celebration of supporters, who are the face of the Red Cross in their communities and bring hope to people facing emergencies. Blood donor Timothy Sheely knows the need firsthand. His wife required 12 units of blood during emergency surgery following the birth of their son. “If it had not been for blood donors, she might not have survived,” he said. “Thanks to generous blood donors, I still have a wife and my kids still have their mom. I can’t possibly thank those people in person, but I can give a little piece of me back with each donation for the greater good.” The Red Cross depends on blood donor heroes across the nation to collect enough blood to meet the needs of patients at approximately 2,600 hospitals nationwide. Donors of all blood types, especially type O, are needed to help those rely on blood products. Make an appointment to become a hero to patients in need by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800733-2767) Upcoming blood donation opportunities: Aliso Viejo 3/15/2018: 1 p.m. - 7 p.m., The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 22851 Aliso Creek Road Brea 3/2/2018: 1 p.m. - 7 p.m., Brea Masonic Center, 500 E Imperial Hwy Costa Mesa 3/2/2018: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Early College High School, 2990 Mesa Verde Drive 3/5/2018: 7:15 a.m. - 1:15 p.m., St John the Baptist School, 1021 Baker St Fountain Valley 3/2/2018: 8:15 a.m. - 3:15 p.m., Fountain Valley Blood Donation Center, 17800 Newhope St 3/3/2018: 7:45 a.m. - 3 p.m., Fountain Valley Blood Donation Center, 17800 Newhope St 3/4/2018: 7:45 a.m. - 2:45 p.m., Fountain Valley Blood Donation Center, 17800 Newhope St 3/5/2018: 12:15 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., Fountain Valley Blood Donation Center, 17800 Newhope St 3/6/2018: 12:15 p.m. - 7:15 p.m., Fountain Valley Blood Donation Center, 17800 Newhope St 3/7/2018: 12:15 p.m. - 7:15 p.m., Fountain Valley Blood Donation Center, 17800 Newhope St 3/8/2018: 10:45 a.m. - 5:45 p.m., Fountain Valley Blood Donation

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at checkin. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood donors can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their predonation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior to arriving at the blood drive. To get started and learn more, visit redcrossblood.org/ RapidPass and follow the instructions on the site. Volunteers needed Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross is to become a volunteer transportation specialist and deliver lifesaving blood products to local area hospitals. Beyond the jar: 8 ingenious ways to eat peanut butter
What food is tasty, filling and fun? Peanut butter, and according to research, Americans are in love with the nutty spread. According to a Peter Pan Simply Ground survey (see below for survey notes), 74 percent of people say it’s a staple in their grocery cart, with the average person eating it four times a week. While toast and PB&J remain a popular go-to, people are seeking new ways to enjoy peanut butter. In fact, 82 percent report that they’re still looking for more flavor pairings and unique ways to incorporate it into their diets. If you love peanut butter but want to go beyond the sandwich, here are eight unique and delicious ways to enjoy it every day: Vegetables and fruit: Peanut butter is a great way to get adults and kids
alike to eat more fruits and veggies. Go beyond celery and try carrots, sweet peppers, pea pods, mango slices, berries and more. The nutty notes of peanut butter are amazing with many different types of produce. Bacon: What has a cult-like following similar to peanut butter? Bacon. And when you blend the two together, you have a flavor explosion unlike any other. Fry up some bacon, let cool and dip it in the wide-mouth jar of Peter Pan Simply Ground in original and honey roast varieties. Serving breakfast? Set a jar in the center of a dish with bacon slices layered around for easy passing. Ice cream: Cool ice cream and peanut butter are the perfect pair. No matter if you prefer ice cream sandwiches, bars or fudge pops, grab your jar and take a dip. The sweet, confection is enhanced with rich, nutty peanut butter. Popcorn: Whether a movie night, sleepover or girls night in, popcorn is an essential snack. Want something a little different? Pop a fresh batch and then dip a few of the kernels in peanut butter. It’s an indulgent treat that will have everyone talking. Granola and protein bars: Satisfying snack bars just got an upgrade when you dip them into peanut butter. With a texture just like freshly ground alternatives, Peter Pan Simply
Ground Peanut Butter is the perfect addition to health snacks like protein and granola bars. Pickles: Sometimes unlikely combinations have the most delicious results. That would be the case with pickles and peanut butter. Give it a try and dip that spear right in or slice pickles for easy sharing with the family. Potato chips: Do potato chips have you reaching for that jar of dip? Change things up by grabbing a jar of peanut butter instead. Salty chips dipped in peanut butter are a match made is snacking heaven. Cookies: Chocolate, butter, molasses - no matter your favorite cookie, it’s going to be better when you add a dollop of peanut butter. Dip and enjoy! Onward! 4 ways explorers can enjoy China’s ancient capital
province present day. Visitors also enjoy the ease of transportation: An international airport and two train stations connect Nanjing to China’s major cities including Shanghai and Beijing, 90 minutes and 3.5 hours by bullet train, respectively. Those wishing to immerse themselves in Nanjing’s ancient beauty and culture can enjoy the following attractions: Historic sites: Among the most historically and architecturally significant are two mausoleums enshrining former Chinese leaders: the Ming Dynasty-era Xiaoling Tomb and Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum, honoring the founder of modern China. Also compelling is the Presidential Palace, built in Neoclassical style in 1864 and transformed into the China Modern History Museum in 1980. Visitors are often inspired by the 600-year-old City Wall of Nanjing, built by 200,000 laborers over a 21-year period to ward off invaders. The structure encloses 55 square kilometers and is among the largest walls ever constructed in Chinese history. Cultural landmarks: A must-see for The Sacred Path leading to the many tourists is the Confucius Temple Ming Tombs at Purple Mountain in Scenic Area. Tour the temple, visit Nanjing, China If you enjoy exploring new and unique cultures when you travel, you’re far from alone. In a 2016 Trip Advisor study, 47 percent of travelers worldwide chose foreign destinations to visit in hopes of being exposed to other cultures and people. Learning the history of ancient cultures can be the most fascinating part of such trips, especially for visitors who measure the age of their own nation in hundreds, not thousands. That’s partly why the 1,800-year-old city of Nanjing, China is such an attractive destination for curious tourists from across the world. The city of 8 million offers access to a wide range of awe-inspiring ancient sites along with multiple opportunities to experience the people, places and culture that make up the Jiangsu

former homes of historic figures then board the Qinhuai river sightseeing cruise while you learn about Nanjing’s history and take in performances along the river’s banks. Visit the opulent subterranean Buddhist palace and two different temples at the 197-acre Niushoushan Cultural Park, an ode to Buddhist beliefs built on a sacred site just outside the city. Don’t miss the Grand Bao’en Temple, a reproduction of a Ming Dynasty pagoda considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Medieval Age. Natural attractions: A popular choice is Xuanwu Lake Park, which features five islands interconnected by arched bridges and miles of enjoyable walkways. Within the park are temples, pagodas, pavilions, gardens, teahouses, restaurants, entertainment venues, a small zoo and other attractions. Elsewhere, choose to walk Qixia Mountain, known for its beautiful foliage in the autumn months, crystal clear springs and multiple scenic spots, or relax at Tangshan Hot Springs, open to both day trippers and local resort guests. Festivals: Mingle with thousands of locals and tourists alike while celebrating the city’s culturally rich traditions. Nanjing will kick off 2017
City Wall in Nanjing, China with New Year’s Eve Bell Ringing Ceremonies throughout the city. Other festivities include the Qinhuai International Lantern Festival (early January), the International Plum Blossom Festival (mid-February through March); the Rain Flower Stone Festival (September) and the Gaochun County Hairy Crab Festival (September through November). While sampling vendors’ offerings at such events, be sure to partake of Nanjing’s culinary specialty - duck, deliciously served up in myriad soups, appetizers, main courses, pastries, snacks and dim sum. The city’s claim to fame: The tender, fragrant and often crispy salted duck first popularized during the Qing Dynasty. Ready to start planning your Nanjing adventure? Music Director Carl St.Clair to Conduct Symphony in Five Cultural Centers, May 9-15, 2018
Carl St.Clair Pacific Symphony today announced the details of its first-ever tour to China and first international tour since the Symphony toured European capitals in 2006. The five-city tour launches May 9, 2018 with a concert at the Shanghai Poly Grand Theatre, followed by performances in Hefei (capital of Anhui province), Wuxi (Jiangsu province), Chongqing (major city in southwest China), and Beijing. The final concert takes place at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, colloquially known as “The Giant Egg” due to its distinctive dome-shaped, titanium and glass architecture. The Symphony’s tour will include works by Leonard Bernstein in celebration of his centennial, as well as Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe, Suite No. 2; Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky (arranged by Ravel); and Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3, featuring soloist Pinchas Zukerman. The visit to China follows another important tour this season to New York City for the Orchestra’s Carnegie Hall debut on April 21, 2018. “We are gratified to represent Southern California on this highly anticipated tour,” says Pacific Symphony Music Director Carl St.Clair. “This is an artistic milestone
Pinchas Zukerman for the orchestra, and I couldn’t be more pleased to be leading this exceptional group of musicians on its first tour to China. This is an artistically significant opportunity for Pacific Symphony to embrace cultural diplomacy and to carry the message of music’s universality across the ocean to the other side of the Pacific Rim. The halls we will be playing have all been built within the last ten years. Some of the world’s leading architects have created contemporary temples of music with stunning acoustics that will beautifully showcase the fine playing of our musicians.” Carl St.Clair, who was personally mentored by Leonard Bernstein, will present works in honor of the composer’s centennial. “I have carefully selected the repertoire for this tour to include quintessential American works such as Bernstein’s ‘Slava!,’ ‘Mambo’ and Overture to ‘Candide,’ which show off Pacific Symphony’s energetic spirit and warm sonority.” He continued, “Additionally, we will be performing 18th-, 19thand 20th-century masterworks by Mozart, Mussorgsky and Ravel that display Pacific Symphony’s incredible versatility and virtuosity.” Pacific Symphony President John
Forsyte said: “We are proud of the role we will be playing as cultural ambassadors for Orange County and the community. As Pacific Symphony looks forward to its 40th anniversary next season, we are gratified by the support we have received from the diverse communities of Orange County over the decades. The county’s Asian-American population is the third largest in the country, and the Chinese community in particular has experienced explosive growth. Since 2013 we have been devoted to engaging with the Chinese communities of the region and building on their enthusiasm for symphonic music. Crossing the Pacific Rim to perform for the Chinese population on the mainland is the logical extension of the work we’ve been doing here in Orange County.” Longtime Pacific Symphony supporters Sandy Segerstrom Daniels and Sally Segerstrom have provided a major lead gift in support of the tour. “The Segerstrom family have been generous patrons throughout the 40-year history of Pacific Symphony. This latest gift is yet another example of their undying generous spirit and ongoing commitment to the unparalleled quality of life in Southern
California. The institution is grateful to Sandy Segerstrom Daniels and Sally Segerstrom for their visionary commitment as lead sponsors of the tour,” commented Joann Leatherby, board chairman. “We are proud to have the opportunity to represent Orange County’s vibrant cultural arts scene to audiences across China.” Pacific Symphony is also announcing it has received a dollarfor-dollar match up to $150,000 to support the tour from Overseas Business Consulting, Inc. Gifts designated to support the tour and received prior to April 30 will qualify for this match. Pinchas Zukerman’s appearances with Pacific Symphony on tour have been generously underwritten by Jerry and Terri Kohl. Additional major support for the tour is provided by Charles and Ling Zhang. Pacific Symphony will be offering a patron tour to China that will include opportunities to customize experiences on the tour. Patrons will engage with musicians in unique cultural setting throughout the tour. More information and pricing will be available in February 2018. Patrons should contact Gary Good at 714876-2360 for further information

All right, title and interest conveyed to and now held by it under said Deed of Trust in the property situated in said County and state, and as more fully described in the above referenced Deed of Trust. Accrued interest and additional advances, if any, will increase this figure prior to sale. It is possible that at the time of sale the opening bid may be less than the total indebtedness due. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the
property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call, 916-939-0772 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site, www.nationwideposting.com, for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, T.S.# 9987-4664. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse.
