by Karean L. Chapman Photos by: John T. Chapman Just when you thought jumpers, hunter/jumpers and dressage was exciting, you haven’t yet experienced the thrill of jumping into the world of cross-country! Oh my! Just wait until you watch Coto de Caza’s Student Jumpers tackle benches, banks, steps, logs and water, Katie Kelly at Coto de Caza’s ESI Training stables makes sure her horses and students cross-train in several equestrian disciplines. Katie and students loaded up their horses into the trailer and ventured out on an exhilarating field trip to Copper Meadows Event Training and Horsepark in Ramona for a day of cross-country training. While some trainers feel this could be confusing to the horse and rider, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. “Cross training in other disciplines helps keep horses minds happy while at the same time building strength in their muscles and body, creating better coordination, stamina and overall soundness,” says Katie. Training in the arena day in and day out gives little mental relief to the horse, as well as just working the same muscles repeatedly. Sure, you can build muscle and stamina this way but cross-training helps build new muscles, strengthens joints and contributes to mental health by stimulating horses with new surroundings. The more a horse sees, the less likely they will spook or be fearful of new jumps, terrain and experiences they encounter at horse shows. Take the successful athlete for instance. To become an all-around fit athlete, you need to cross-fit train, including riders. If you think you’ve done a great work out in the arena, wait until you take it to the open field in the great outdoors. You
will discover muscles you did not know ever existed! This is exactly what Coto de Caza’s ESI kids said after their trip to Copper Meadows Event and Training Park in Ramona, California. The excitement level of the kids was sky high. The horses were enlivened and looking around at their new surroundings as they unloaded the horse trailer. The ground was lush with green grass from the heavy rains and the cross-country course was filled with lots of logs, fences, steps, banks and large, freshly filled ponds of water. Coto de Caza’s ESI students are a mix of different levels. From beginners, who have never seen a cross country course, to experienced competitive eventers. ESI owner and trainer, Katie Kelly started the students off in groups in order of horse and rider experience. As Katie mounted Monet, an off-the-track thoroughbred owned by client Grace Covarrubias , she took Jack Gaon on Croc, his large wonder pony, and Mikayla Chapman on Rocket, her sister Shayna’s Connemara pony, through the course first. Rocket’s eventing experience helped guide Mikayla as they made their way through the course together. Jack and Croc’s competitive eventing experience, shear guts and natural talent shined the brightest as the pair jumped to incredible heights through the advanced course. Jack and Croc made jumping through a covered complex and daunting owl hole fence look effortless. These high-level obstacles require precision, timing and trust for the success and safety of both horse and rider. By taking small groups out at a time Katie can tailor the course and difficulty level to the needs of her students and horses. “It’s always a treat getting to ride in the wide open grassy area. C on f idence - boosting tips f or f itness class f irst - timers You’ve joined a health club and now you’re curious about fitness classes. You’re almost ready to sign up for an indoor cycle, yoga or strength-training class, but something stops you. You feel nervous and uncomfortable and decide to wait. Group fitness classes are a fantastic way to exercise because you’re guided by an expert, plus the energy of the group keeps you motivated. However, because it’s something new that puts people outside their comfort zone, it’s common to feel apprehensive in the beginning. To help you gain confidence to try any type of group exercise class, consider these tips from three health club members. Comfort over style. “Trust me, no one cares what you’re wearing,” says Deb Kampe, a member at Life Time, which operates 122 destinations across the United States and in Canada. “If you want to wear gym shorts and a T-shirt, do it. Head-totoe athleisure? Do it. A tutu? Do it. Just make sure you’re comfortable and safe. Don’t spend a fortune on the latest fitness clothing trends or labels. Expensive does not equal better.” Don’t be self-conscious. “It’s easy to assume everyone in class is fit, knows all the moves and is judging you. No one cares,” Kampe says. “Once the music starts and the instructor begins, all eyes are up front taking direction and being lifted into the moment.” Everyone was a newbie. “Everyone was a first-timer at some point, so they know how it feels,” says Dustin
Meriwether, member at Life Time. “They’re not going to judge you for it, and many - hopefully all - will be willing to answer any questions and help in any other way.” Instructors want to assist. “All instructors - and other members - want to help you,” says Kelby Mezzenga, member at Life Time. “So just walk in and let the instructor know you are new or have a question. That welcoming feeling takes the edge off and chances are, you’ll have met a new friend.” Keep an open mind. “Group fitness classes are designed to challenge you and take you out of your comfort zone. You may be unfamiliar with the equipment you’ll use or how hard it might be, but I guarantee you will feel the burn,” Mezzenga says. Listen to your body. “You know your body best,” says Meriwether. “If something doesn’t feel right or if you know you have problems with something, modify the workout correspondingly. People do that all the time and many instructors
are good about suggesting such modifications.” Give it 100 percent. “You get out what you put in,” Meriwether says. “If you put in minimal effort, you can expect minimal results. But if you give it your all, you can expect some pretty fantastic fitness changes.” Bring water. Hydration is important, but you don’t need to worry about anything else. “Life Time has everything you’ll need for any class, from yoga mats to towels,” says Mezzenga. Celebrate victories “During the cool-down and stretching segment of class, take a moment to celebrate your victory,” says Kampe. “Look around, everyone no matter what their age and ability will beseriously sweaty, all there with you sharing the same endorphins. Take that feeling with you and own it. Then look at the class schedule and commit to another one.” For more information about group fitness, visit www.lifetimefitness.com. - (BPT)

CAPISTRANO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT ANNOUNCES Julie Fong as ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER OF THE YEAR A surprise visit to Marian Bergeson Elementary School by CUSD Board President Martha McNicholas, Vice President Gila Jones, Secretary Patricia Holloway, Trustee Amy Hanacek, Superintendent Kirsten Vital and Capistrano Unified Educators Association President Sally White was made to announce Mandarin Immersion Teacher Julie Fong as this year’s Elementary School Teacher of the Year for the Capistrano Unified School District. The group headed to Fong’s classroom to share the news with her and her students. “Julie Fong is one our fabulous Mandarin Immersion teachers. She brings the world to her classroom,” President Martha McNicholas stated. “She makes sure her students know that they can make a difference. By shaping their young minds and inspiring them while they are learning – and having fun - she gives them the confidence they need to become responsible global citizens and successful leaders.”
Fong began her career teaching in a wealthy private school and went on to spend the next 13 years teaching in South Central Los Angeles. For the past four years she has been teaching Mandarin Immersion at Marian Bergeson Elementary School. Her experience gives her the perspective that no matter a student’s background or economic status, she is a champion for their individual success and empowers them to make a difference and be a positive influence in the world. Her students raised money to buy toys for a student with a serious illness, went into the community to educate them about the prevalence of Malaria in Africa, and made lunches for the homeless in Santa Ana. “I create tasks and projects where students can learn while having fun,” Fong said. “Sometimes the students don’t realize that they’re learning because they feel inspired. Knowing that I am helping shape positive, responsible global citizens is the best

reward in teaching.” Julie has transformed Bergeson’s Mandarin Immersion program by bringing depth to it, exposing students to more than just language but also to classical music, movies and art in Mandarin. Under her guidance, students were selected to participate in a traditional Chinese poetry competition, in the category of Native Speakers, and finished in both 3rd and 5th place out of 700
students competing. Julie makes her students a priority and never fails to take whatever time is needed to help a student having trouble. Fong will represent CUSD at the Orange County Department of Education Teachers of the Year program where four teachers will be selected to move on to the California Department of Education Teacher of the Year program.

What can you do differently in 2017 to ensure you’re among those who succeed? “Mental health and taking time for yourself can greatly improve your chances of achieving your health and wellness goals,” says the Mayo Clinic. “It’s important to realize that changing any behavior is often a complex process that requires you to address the mental as well as physical aspects of the change you want to achieve.” Below are helpful strategies from the wellness professionals at Mayo Clinic to assist you in achieving your goals this year: Be on your mental game Weight loss is a common New Year’s resolution goal, but to achieve it, you’ll likely need to do more than simply change your eating habits. Behaviors, thoughts and emotions may be playing a role in keeping you from shedding pounds. For example, not getting enough sleep can thwart better eating and exercise habits. Sleep deprivation can hinder your ability to control your emotions, interfere with positive thought processes and make you too tired to exercise regularly. Being aware of factors that contribute to negative habits not only can help you succeed, it can also help you sustain the changes. Be aware of self-talk Everyone has an integral dialogue, and it’s the voice we all believe the most. Is yours negative or positive? The voice of your self-talk can greatly affect your confidence level. Pay attention to your self-talk and evaluate if what you’re telling yourself is actually true. When self-talk turns negative, try to challenge it and find a more positive way to look at the situation. For example, turn “I always fail at losing weight because I eat too much” into “I enjoy eating fruits and vegetables and can easily eat three servings a day.” It will take time and practice to learn how to turn negative self-talk into positive, so be patient with yourself.
Proven Medical Neuropathy Treatment with an 87% Success Rate Available in Newport Beach Fight boredom with fun and creativity People fail at wellness goals for many reasons, including boredom. Approaching your goals with a creative and fun attitude can help keep them fresh and exciting - and keep you on track! Try learning something new or vary your routine. For example, try a new recipe or modify your usual food choices. Learn to use a new piece of equipment at the gym, or take an exercise class to learn something you’ve always wanted to do. Dance around the house, take a healthy cooking class, read a book, travel, check an item off your bucket list or create a list if you don’t have one. However you define “fun,” if you enjoy what you’re doing, you’re more likely to want to keep doing it. Prepare to overcome setbacks No matter how committed you are to a goal, setbacks are normal. Don’t let them derail you. Planning for setbacks and how you’ll overcome them can help you stay on track for the long term. When planning how you’ll reach a desired behavior change, try including some what-if scenarios. For example, if your fitness routine includes a yoga class after work and you get delayed, think about what you could do to still meet your exercise goal. You might be able to substitute another class or use body weight exercises at home. Having a back-up plan in case your original goal doesn’t work out can help you avoid “all-or-nothing” thinking. If you experience a setback, be compassionate with yourself; change is rarely easy. Giving yourself a break will help you dust yourself off and get back on track. By taking a mindful and proactive approach to your health, you’ll be on the way towards achieving your wellness goals through 2017 and beyond. DON’T WAIT ANOTHER DAY
CALL US NOW IF YOU NEED IMMEDIATE ACTION WITH THE IRS, THE CALIFORNIA FRANCHISE TAX BOARD OR ANY OTHER TAX AGENCY
The Accountancy offices of Kim Coyle, Certified Public Accountant is ready to assist you with any tax matter. Dear Client; As the new year begins, it’s a good time to think of planning strategies that will help lowering your taxes for 2017. My goal is for you to leverage your tax deductions and credit to the fullest extent. I want to briefly discuss five different strategies that can be powerful tools in lowering your tax bill. And the really great part is that each of these strategies is easy to understand and implement. Here are the strategies: Here are the five strategies 1. Estimated Taxes In most cases, you must pay estimated taxes for 2016 if both of the following apply. a) You expect to owe at least $1,000 in tax for 2016, after subtracting your withholding and refundable credits. b) You expect your withholding and refundable credits to be less than the smaller of: 90% of the tax to be shown on your 2016 tax return, or 100% of the tax shown on your 2013 tax returns;Note: Your above percentages may be different if you are a farmer, fisherman or higher income taxpayer. Strategy note: The purpose of making estimated tax payments is to avoid underpayment and late payment penalties and interest. The 2016 estimates taxes must take into consideration the following: New 4.6% tax for the high earners, New 0.9% Medicare tax;c) New 3.8% NIIT explained above. preparation of quarterly financial statements is desirable in calculating accurate estimated taxes. 2.Defer/ or Accelerate Income Most small businesses utilize cash basis of accounting for their taxes, may defer their 2016 billing and collection efforts to 2017, if they believe to have less income or predict the tax rates will be lower next year, and their conduct doesn’t violate any laws. Conversely, if they believe they will have more income next year or they will be in higher tax bracket next year, they may accelerate their billing and increase their current year income. Strategy note: If you believe the incoming Trump Administration will cut the tax rates, you may defer your income to 2017. For employees and executives, this means deferring 2016 bonuses to 2017.Taxpayers who believe they will be in a higher tax bracket next year, they may defer current deductions into 2017. On the other hand, they may accelerate their business deductions, medical expenses, 4th quarter State estimated taxes, property taxes, etc., after consulting their cpa or qualified tax advisor to avoid any AMT trap, and their conduct is not illegal.Tax Tip: If you believe the incoming Trump Administration will cut the tax rates, you may accelerate 2016 expenses. 3.Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) The 2016 AMT exemption increases to $83,800 for married filing jointly (MFJ), $53,800 for single filers, $41,900 for married filing separately, and $24,100 for trusts. Strategy note: Consult your CPA or professional tax advisor to avoid Alternative Minimum Tax trap. 4. Report of Bank & Financial Accounts (FBAR), Bank Secrecy Act Network (FinCen Form 114) must be e-filed If you have a financial interest in, or signature authority or other authority over a foreign financial account, including a bank account, brokerage account, mutual fund, trust, or other type of foreign financial account with aggregate value exceeding $10,000, the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) requires you e-file the FBAR report with the US Treasury Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCen) form 114 (formerly TD F 90-22.1) by no later than April 15, 2017. The new deadline is under the Surface Transportation and Veterans Health Care Choice Improvement Act of 2015 and there will be a 6-month extension available for the first time.Strategy note: Include earnings from FBAR accounts in your 2016 estimated taxes. 5.Individual Retirement Account (IRA) Traditional tax deductible IRA contribution for 2016 is $5,500, and $6,500 for taxpayers 50 years or older. Contribution for a taxpayer married to one who is covered by a retirement plan at work, is phased out between Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $184,000 and $194,000.Strategy note: Contribution must be made on or before April 18, 2017. Please do not hesitate contact me if you want to discuss in greater depth any of the strategies outlined above.

“Love Grows by Giving” Wine Tasting Fundraiser Raises Over $100,000 Nonprofit Community Service Programs (CSP) hosted more than 500 wine lovers and humanitarians to help raise over $100,000 to benefit CSP’s Huntington Beach Youth Shelter, a safe haven for homeless, runaway, abused and at-risk youth, during its seventh annual “Love Grows by Giving” Wine Tasting fundraiser at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa. The event featured an evening of unique wines featuring PRP Wine International, ZONINI 1821, J. Lohr Vineyards and Wines, Southern Hemisphere Wine Center, Young’s Market Company, Rodney Strong Vineyards, Duckhorn Vineyards, Main Street Wine Company, Brix Sunset Beach, and Kendall-Jackson. The night also included wine education and food pairings from local fine dining restaurants such as Hyatt Regency Watertable, Duke’s, Red Table, BLK, and Buon Gusto, beer and vodka samplings, live music and more. “We’re beyond grateful to the support of the local businesses and community members who have made this year’s Love Grows by Giving fundraiser a huge success. Our services at the Community Service Programs’ Huntington Beach Youth Shelter wouldn’t be possible without them,” says Elsa Greenfield, program director of Community Service Programs’ Huntington Beach Youth Shelter. “Our supporters help make the shelter much more than a place to stay. We’re able to provide children in need with valuable resources, and more importantly, a place to call home.” Live and silent auctions included prizes such as a two-night stay in a Presidential Suite at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa with dinner for two and a VIP welcome amenity (a $4,750 value). Notable attendees and supporters included Dennis Kuhl, chairman of Angels Baseball, John Graham, President of Speedo USA, and Peter Rice, general manager of the Huntington Beach Hyatt Resort and member of the Huntington Beach Youth Shelter Advisory Board. Proceeds from Love Grows by Giving will benefit the Community Service Programs Huntington Beach Youth Shelter, which since opening its doors ten years ago, has helped over 1,200 homeless, runaway and struggling Orange County young people between ages 11 and 17, most who are trying to cope with issues kids should never face, such as early-childhood trauma. The trained staff has an excellent success rate of reuniting children with their families, at nearly 90 percent, by finding solutions to their very complex problems. The Shelter’s mission runs much deeper than just a place to stay, as they provide a place for homeless, runaway and at-risk youth 24/7, 365 days a year. As emergency crisis and intervention programs, the CSP Huntington Beach Youth Shelter aims to achieve: family strengthening and reunification, homeless prevention, diversion of at-risk youth from the juvenile justice system, and school drop-out prevention. In addition to providing youth with a safe haven and protection from the dangers of the streets, the shelters also provide youth and their families with professional comprehensive services including individual, group and family therapy, academic support, job/career readiness, life skills and aftercare. Community Service Programs (CSP) is a non-profit agency committed to serving children, adults and families living in Orange County who are involved with or at-risk of involvement with the justice system. CSP’s model programs assist over 125,000 community members annually, including abused children, struggling families, acting out adolescents, victims of crime, and those in need of mediation services. For more information on CSP and its programs, visit www.cspinc.org.

Fuel your day with 5 energizing superfoods With groggy eyes and slow movements, you peel yourself out of bed each day. Between the morning and afternoon slumps, you long for the energy of your youth. Does this sound familiar? Then you’ll be glad to know about five superfoods that can help energize you from the inside out, so you can feel your best all day. As a registered dietician, nutrition expert at On Target Living, and author of the newly released cookbook “Target To Table: Delicious & Healthy Meals One Superfood at a Time,” Kristen Johnson understands that food plays a big role in health and wellness, and believes there’s no such thing as anti-aging - only aging well. Here are the five energizing superfoods Johnson recommends to fuel your body the healthy way. 1. Ancient grains “Ancient grains have remained virtually untouched and unchanged for thousands of years compared to modern wheat or corn that’s been bred for higher yield and drought resistance,” says Johnson. Ancient grains are extremely high in protein, fiber and minerals. Johnson notes these grains can be helpful in managing inflammation and are a great source of energizing B vitamins for the brain and body. Ancient grains include spelt, quinoa, chia, amaranth, buckwheat, wheat berries, kamut, freekah, bulgur, barley, sorghum, teff, millet, oats, wild
rice and farro. These grains can be used to make hot dishes similar to oatmeal, or can be cooked and used in salads and entrees. 2. Omega-3 fats “Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the human cell, meaning they supply the body with energy. The better you feed the mitochondria, the healthier and better performing the cell will be,” explains Johnson. “Cell membranes must be permeable to allow the cell to be fed and allow ‘fuel’ for the mitochondria. The omega-3 fats EPA & DHA found in fish and algae are a great way to make the cell soft and permeable. This will help to fuel the body and improve energy and stamina.” Our bodies cannot make omega-3 fats naturally, and therefore they must come from food or supplements, notes Johnson. “Because fresh, cold-water, wild-caught fish is not always available, I often recommend a high-quality supplement like Nordic Naturals orange-flavored Arctic Cod Liver Oil,” says Johnson. Cod liver oil has naturally occurring vitamin D that is needed to absorb calcium, an important factor for bone health. Nordic Naturals Arctic Cod Liver Oil is a great source of the omega-3s EPA and DHA that help contributes to a healthy heart and brain, hormonal balance, and a healthy immune response. Simply take 1 tablespoon daily or add to your
smoothies or salad dressings. 3. Spirulina and chlorella “Spirulina and chlorella are freshwater algae that are super high in chlorophyll, which is extremely energizing for the body,” says Johnson. “Because spirulina and chlorella are cell-builders, they also help to build the immune system and can help prevent you from getting sick.” Spirulina and chlorella are also very cleansing and detoxifying, which helps improve digestion. Because both are high in protein, they are also great for vegans. Swallow (don’t chew) the tablets with water 15-20 minutes prior to eating. Aim for 10-20 tablets a day. 4. Cacao Cacao is the raw, unprocessed form of chocolate. It is high in magnesium, manganese, zinc, and iron. Johnson notes that cacao has many potential health benefits, including supporting brain and heart health, mood, healthy body weight, and energy. Cacao can also enhance relaxation and promote a better night’s sleep. Because it is high in magnesium, it has also been shown to help build muscle and aid in muscle recovery. Cacao also contains more antioxidants than red wine, green tea and blueberries. Cacao nibs are easy to consume and can be mixed in oatmeal, smoothies or trail mix. You can also blend cacao nibs or cacao powder
with coconut or almond milk and a little bit of honey in a blender for a healthy version of chocolate milk or hot chocolate. 5. Coconut “Coconuts contain a healthy saturated fat high in lauric, capric, and caprylic acids, which have antiviral and antifungal properties and help contribute to healthy digestion,” says Johnson. “Coconuts also contain medium-chain fatty acids (MCTs) that can enhance energy and metabolism.” Coconut water, coconut milk and shredded coconut are all great options to add to your diet. Using virgin coconut oil is also a great way to sneak in more coconut when cooking, baking, or snacking. Simply use it in place of oil in cooking and butter in baking. It’s great for spreading on bread and for making popcorn, too. - (BPT)
cant get to the Farmers market? How to make the most of your grocery store’s produce aisle It’s the same story every year kids return to school, temperatures drop, summer vacation becomes a fading memory, its raining and the local farmers market is closed. While you may spend winter longing for the return of 80-degree days and sunny skies, you don’t have to miss out on your favorite fruits and veggies. Many are still available in local grocery stores and some smart tricks and choices can help you eat like the farmers market is still open ... all winter long. “The seasonal nature of farmers markets doesn’t have to keep you from reaping the benefits of fresh and locally grown produce,” says registered dietitian Paul Kriegler, assistant program manager for nutrition and weight loss, Life Time - The Healthy Way of Life Company. “The average store carries more than 45,000 different foods, so it’s important to know what to buy and what to avoid.” To eat as if the farmers market is open, keep these tips in mind on your next visit to the grocery store:
* Plan meals and menus for the week and make your shopping list accordingly. If you stick to your list, it will help you avoid impulse purchases. * Keep kids involved. If your children loved visiting the farmers market and learning how to eat healthy, there’s no reason you can’t continue their education in the grocery store. Take them shopping with you and give them a small budget so they can pick their own produce. Encourage them to pick fruits and vegetables from every color of the rainbow. * It’s not just folklore - if you shop while hungry, you’re more likely to make poor choices. “When you’re hungry, anything looks good, and junk looks even more appealing,” Kriegler cautions. “Have a healthful snack like a handful of nuts or a piece of fruit before you shop.” * Your diet should consist of mostly fruits and vegetables, so make the produce aisle the first stop when you visit the grocery store. If you fill your cart with more produce, you’ll have less room for less healthful choices.
* Shop from the outer aisles, where you’re most likely to find whole, unprocessed foods - like fresh produce. Inner aisle have more processed foods. * Don’t be afraid to try new things. As the seasons turn, new and unexpected items may appear in produce aisles. Varieties of squash begin appearing in September and staying through March, as well as turnips, rutabagas, carrots and other cool weather favorites. An online search can help you find new recipes for virtually any type of unfamiliar produce. Experimenting with new veggies and fruits can be exciting and nutritious! * Take advantage of store resources. Many grocery stores now include signage in the produce aisle that tells you where different items originated, how you might use them, flavor and nutrition - even recipes. If your grocery store offers free recipe cards beside a new vegetable, give both a try. * Whenever possible, buy organic. “I commonly hear the question, is
organic really necessary,” Kriegler says. “Your first goal is to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables your family eats, but once you’re doing that it’s important to choose organic produce. It will help you avoid toxins, herbicides and pesticides in your food that could affect your metabolism and cause other health problems.” * If you must buy prepackaged and labeled foods, read the ingredient list first. If it’s full of unrecognizable or unhealthy ingredients, put it back on the shelf and look for a better alternative. For more healthful living and nutrition information, visit LifeTimeFitness. com.

3 ways to revamp your winter skincare regimen Smart skincare is essential yearround to maintain healthy, youthful looking skin. During the colder months, it becomes especially critical as temperatures, humidity and air quality are in flux - not to mention your calendar, which is sure to be packed with seasonal festivities. By upgrading your skincare regimen this winter, you can better protect your skin through dry conditions and maintain a healthy glow between your daily activities and holiday happenings. Whether you’re getting glam for a gathering, hitting the ski slopes or holiday shopping for that special someone, taking care of your skin is key to looking and feeling your best! Shine with refined, smoothed skin. The secret to maintaining healthy looking, dewy skin is to find skincare products that help refine the appearance of pores. While cold air visibly shrinks pores, lower humidity levels can actually increase excess oil production and cause irritated, clogged pores. When choosing your skincare products, look for those designed to retexturize your skin. Formulas with scientifically proven ingredients like oat extract help exfoliate the skin to unclog pores, while lentil seed extract, which is high in antioxidants, can reduce the appearance of pores.
Additionally, java tea extract is known for its oil control properties. Such ingredients are used in products like Artistry Advanced Skin Refinisher, which is a great addition for your skincare regimen. Always remember to moisturize skin and stay hydrated. This goes for every climate and season, as skin cells require water to stay healthy and resist environmental damage. In the winter, harsher climates often see lower humidity, which requires extra hydrating skincare for defense. Moisturize at least twice daily. In the morning, moisturizers are the perfect base for your makeup to avoid flaky skin while you’re out and about. Complement it with nourishing foundations for smooth, flawless coverage, and toss a compact foundation with moisturizer in your bag to reapply on the go. For intensive hydration, consider denser moisturizing creams like Artistry Supreme LX Regenerating Cream and Eye Cream, which also have anti-aging benefits. “These formulas contain multi-phase technology to replenish, energize, repair and protect skin so it looks and performs more like it did when it was younger,” says Dr. Sumita Butani, global product innovation lead for Artistry by Amway. “Using
moisturizers with an added anti-aging effect from powerful ingredients like gardenia grandiflora stem cell extract is particularly crucial in dry weather, when your skin is more susceptible to dullness and dryness.” If moisturizing creams feel too heavy on your skin during the day, opt for a lotion for a light and refreshing boost. Then, as you’re unwinding at night, reapplying moisturizers after removing makeup and cleansing is a great way to revitalize the skin for the day ahead. It’s like giving your skin a big glass of water! Of course, don’t forget to drink water as well. Eight 8-ounce glasses, which equals about two liters, gives your skin a refreshing reservoir. Coffee, tea and soda have a diuretic effect that counteracts hydration, so try to limit your intake of those beverages. Indulge once in a while, inside and out. In addition to your daily skincare regimen, pick a day or two each week to pamper your skin even further with a revitalizing mineral-based mask or peel. Try moisturizing masks packed with hydrolipids to lock in moisture, and soothing fragrances, like cucumber and lavender, for a full, relaxing experience. Every now and then, take time to truly self-indulge, such as by making

yourself a cup of herbal tea, soaking in a hot bath or diving into that book you’ve put on hold. “The holidays are all about focusing on quality time with family and friends, but it’s also so important to invest energy into my own physical and emotional wellness so I can feel my best,” says Amway Independent Business Owner Carrie Bohlig. “I practice good self-care by keeping on top of my skincare regimen and making time for my at-home spa treatment using Artistry Renewing Peel. I also hit the gym, get outside and eat a well-rounded diet so I can really make the most of special holiday time with my loved ones!” By taking care of yourself from the inside out and investing in high quality skincare, you’ll be able to feel and look great as you enjoy the winter months and make memories to cherish. - (BPT)

Celebrity Homes : Mary Tyler M oore’s TV Home! The Mary Tyler Moore Show aired on CBS from 1970 to 1977, a forerunner for bringing some of society’s social issues into American homes in an easy to digest comedic script. Mary played the lead as Mary Richards, a 30-year-old single woman whose top priority was not getting married, but establishing a career and getting the most out of her single lifestyle. Viewers remember the early 1900’s-era Victorian house in the opening title sequence where Mary was renting an upstairs apartment. Entertainment Weekly called it “TV’s most famous bachelorette pad.” Even though the house was given a fictitious address in the series, fans figured out the real address and it became a tourist destination with 30 tour buses a day long after the program ended. Fans were constantly knocking on the door looking for “Mary” and drove the woman who lived there to distraction. She finally hung a sign under Mary’s supposed apartment window that read “Impeach Nixon.” It didn’t work as intended and the house continued to draw as many onlookers as before. The home has been perfectly

restored and updated. Within its 9,500 square feet are seven bedrooms, nine baths, multiple terraces and upper level decks, two family rooms, turret office, gym and sauna. Many Victorian features remain such as leaded-glass transoms, bayed rooms and ornate millwork. The lot is a third of an acre with a three-car garage with its own turret. mansion was used in the show, while Mary’s actual apartment was a Hollywood set. It was meant to be behind the Palladian windows on the home’s third story. In real life, that space is a family room with a gas fireplace, built-ins and a beautiful view of the tree-lined street. PACIFIC SYMPHONY TO MAKE ITS CARNEGIE HALL DEBUT FOR A SPECIAL PROGRAM DEDICATED TO ONE OF TODAY’S MOST FASCINATING AND PRE-EMINENT COMPOSERS, PHILIP GLASS
Pacific Symphony, led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, has been invited to perform for the very first time at one of the world’s most prestigious venues, Carnegie Hall in New York City, in honor of one of today’s leading composers, Philip Glass. Joining them will be Pacific Chorale, also appearing at Carnegie Hall for the first time. One of America’s most revered composers, Glass is Carnegie Hall’s 2017-18 composer-in-residence, where he holds the Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair. With this seasonlong residency by Glass, Carnegie joined a yearlong celebration of the composer’s 80th birthday, presenting performances that feature his classics and premieres. As part of the residency, orchestras from across the United States were invited to submit programs featuring important works by Glass in illuminating contexts. Pacific Symphony and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra were the two orchestras chosen, in part by Glass himself, to perform during Carnegie’s upcoming season. Both orchestras emerged among competitors with what Carnegie called “very compelling programs.” “Being invited to Carnegie Hall is a great honor,” says Pacific Symphony’s Music Director Carl St.Clair. “And, being invited to this world-renowned concert hall to celebrate the birthday of my dear friend, Philip Glass, makes our debut there all the more meaningful. Further, to perform in his honor a work that Pacific Symphony commissioned, premiered and recorded, along with celebrating his long relationship with Ravi Shankar with works he co-composed with him, makes the entire occasion powerful.” “Artistic excellence and innovation are at the core of Pacific Symphony’s identity,” commented Symphony President John Forsyte, “so it is gratifying to have this opportunity to showcase at Carnegie Hall a work commissioned by Pacific Symphony that is emblematic of our strong commitment to new music. It is also rewarding that the Pacific Chorale, a frequent commissioning partner and an important force on the Orange County cultural scene, will join us in presenting the New York premiere of ‘The Passion of Ramakrishna,’ during this special festival celebrating the genius of Philip Glass.” Pacific Symphony makes this significant debut on Saturday, April 21, 2018, when Glass’ famous collaborations with the Indian sitar master Ravi Shankar will be honored during a program that spotlights “Meetings Along the Edge” from “Passages,” a piece Glass recorded with Shankar, whom Glass first met in India in 1965. The eightminute movement was composed by Glass on a theme of Shankar in 1990. Also on the program is the 40-minute “Concerto No. 3 for Sitar and Orchestra” by Shankar, which was written on commission from the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and premiered in 2009 by his daughter, Anoushka Shankar, who will perform with Pacific Symphony at Carnegie Hall. The final work on the program will be the New York premiere of “The Passion of Ramakrishna”—a work Page 28
of quiet intensity and unforgettable power—scored for vocal soloists, chorus and large orchestra to celebrate the life of this incredible Hindu holy man. Mixing Eastern and Western traditions, Glass’ heroic musical homage paints an exquisite symphonic and choral picture of India emerging from centuries of foreign domination. The epic, 45-minute piece was commissioned by Pacific Symphony and given its worldpremiere on Sept. 16, 2006, as part of the grand opening of the orchestra’s then-new home, the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa, Calif. Gramophone magazine reviewed the Symphony’s 2012 recording of the work, praising it as Glass’ “most thoughtful and inventive recent piece.” Local Pacific Symphony enthusiasts will have the opportunity to hear the orchestra perform this concert in Orange County on April 12-14, 2018. Single tickets to the Carnegie Hall performance go on sale August 28 at CarnegieHall.org. In addition, Pacific Symphony will announce a patron trip to cheer on the orchestra in New York later this spring. “In creating our season-long residency with Philip Glass, we saw a great opportunity to ask orchestras from across the country to suggest programs that put his symphonic works in illuminating context,” says Clive Gillinson, executive and artistic director of Carnegie Hall. “Pacific Symphony’s program stood out as one of the most compelling, and we were further impressed by the orchestra’s strong commitment to performing and recording Philip’s works. We’re delighted to present the orchestra in their Carnegie Hall debut next season and look forward to an evening of great musical discovery.” Glass, who spent a great deal of time traveling in India during the middle years of his life, says he had long known about the Gospel of Ramakrishna, which he calls “a classic book, written in a beautiful style.” Along with Nadia Boulanger, Glass claims that Ravi Shankar is the most important person with whom he has ever worked. The composer says: “It was my great luck to meet a master of a great tradition of global music. One of Ravi’s great achievements is the way he extrapolates rhythmic structure into the overall structure of a composition. Ravi is a complete master of that.” This momentous tribute to the 19th-century Indian mystic (who famously said, “Every religion is a path to God”) will feature the Pacific Chorale and guest soloists Elissa Johnston, soprano, as Sarada Devi; Christòpheren Nomura, baritone, as “M”; Donovan Singletary, bassbaritone as Dr. Sarkar; I-Chin Feinblatt as First Devotee and Nicholas Preston as Second Devotee (both Orange County residents and members of Pacific Chorale). Johnston was recently cited by the Chicago Tribune for the “exquisite beauty, sensitivity and precision” of her singing, while Nomura has been hailed as one of classical music’s “rising stars’ by The Wall Street Journal; he returns to the role he sang during Pacific Symphony’s premiere of “The Passion of Ramakrishna” in

2006. “Philip has played an important role in Pacific Symphony’s life, especially since we opened the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall with his ‘Passion of Ramakrishna,’ ” says St.Clair, “and the relationship just grew from there. His musical voice is distinct, unique and reflects the deep spirituality of Philip, the man and the humanitarian.” In 2011, Glass became the focus of Pacific Symphony’s 11th American Composers Festival (ACF)—“The Passion of Philip Glass”—the firstever Southern California Philip Glass Festival, presented in partnership with Long Beach Opera. The festival included not only the composer’s music (concert and opera) but accompanying events (films, lectures, discussions), all of which probed deeply into Glass and his music. The unifying theme for ACF that year was the influence that India’s music and philosophy had on Glass. The Festival revisited “The Passion of Ramakrishna” and presented complementary works from Glass’ oeuvre, with the goal of bringing this modern master to the greater attention of music patrons in Southern California. “I had wanted Philip Glass as our featured composer for ACF in spring 2006,” says St.Clair. “It was the third year ACF looked at the non-western influences on American composers in the 20th-21st centuries and he was thinking of doing a largescale work based on the life of the Ramakrishna—but there wasn’t enough time for him to complete it. So it premiered for our opening of the hall in September 2006. I have always felt the work deserved to be repeated again in the future.” There are myriad reasons why Glass is worthy of so much attention, beginning with the fact that he has made a tremendous impact on the American musical vocabulary. He has written in numerous different genres, drawing inspiration from a multitude of sources, while retaining an immediately identifiable style. All of this plays a part in St.Clair’s and Pacific Symphony’s lengthy history with the composer. “I first met Philip in the early 1980s at the Cabrillo Festival,” recalls St.Clair. “It was Dennis Russell Davies who introduced us.” Glass was the guest composer that summer and St.Clair conducted a couple of his orchestral works at that festival. They enjoyed an immediate and strong personal connection and St.Clair recalls that
week with deep fondness. “I am a big, big fan with utmost respect for him as composer and friend.” It is no wonder that this cultural icon, reaching across generations and genres, even beyond the world of music, has attracted the attention of so many. His wide-ranging collaborations with artists from every discipline—including choreographer Twyla Tharp, poet Allen Ginsberg and filmmaker Martin Scorsese—have fascinated opera, dance, pop and rock audiences for more than half a century. His catalog of visionary works, known for both hypnotic and dramatic structures and shapeshifting motifs, are landmarks of a mid-century compositional movement that pivoted from serialism and atonality toward a more direct and rhythmic style. Glass was born in 1937 and grew up in Baltimore, Md. He studied at the University of Chicago, The Juilliard School and the Aspen Music Festival and School with Darius Milhaud. He later moved to Europe, where he studied with the legendary pedagogue Boulanger (who also taught Aaron Copland, Virgil Thomson and Leonard Bernstein), returning to New York to work closely with the sitar virtuoso/composer, Shankar, and study with Shankar’s legendary tabla player, Alla Rakha. In 1967, he formed the Philip Glass Ensemble— seven musicians playing keyboards and a variety of woodwinds, amplified and fed through a mixer. The new musical style evolved by Glass was eventually dubbed “minimalism.” Glass himself never liked the term and preferred to speak of himself as a composer of “music with repetitive structures.” There has been nothing “minimalist” about his musical output. In the past 25 years, Glass has composed more than 20 operas, large and small; 11 symphonies; two piano concertos; concertos for violin, piano, timpani, and saxophone quartet and orchestra; soundtracks to films, ranging from new scores for the stylized classics of Jean Cocteau to Errol Morris’ documentary about former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara; string quartets; and a growing body of work for solo piano and organ. He has collaborated with Paul Simon, Linda Ronstadt, YoYo Ma and Doris Lessing, among many others. He presents lectures, workshops and solo keyboard performances around the world, and continues to appear regularly with the Philip Glass Ensemble.

Award-winning interior designer reveals 5 ways to a must-have media room It’s hard to believe that at one time, Americans watched television by huddling around a small box with poor picture quality and sound. Even nicer televisions were tucked in the corner of living rooms where noise from the kitchen, kids running around the house and other distractions constantly interfered. How we watch television and movies at home has greatly changed in the past decade. Today’s consumergrade audiovisual technology is a full-body, multi-sensory experience. The sound, visuals and comfortable seating achieved in home theaters rival, and sometimes exceed, that of movie theaters. Media rooms are no longer the luxury of the wealthy. They have become a standard in many middle class households throughout the country, and are on the top of the list for many people remodeling their homes. Today, the media room has become a multipurpose space where families can watch a movie together, kids can play their video games or friends can congregate to watch the big game. Whatever your interest, a newly renovated media room can provide the right space for your gathering. But to achieve the ultimate experience, there’s more than just the latest digital gadgets and comfy seating to consider. To design the proper media room, TV personality and award-
winning interior designer Anitra Mecadon offers the following tips. Start at the studs. You’ll probably spend the majority of your time deciding what kind of screen and speaker components to install, but no matter how cutting edge your audiovisual equipment is, you have to properly house it in order to realize its full potential. For this, your media room needs the right walls. Just like Ultra High Definition (UHD) technology represents how far televisions have come, PURPLE SoundBreak XP drywall made by National Gypsum represents how far drywall technology has advanced. This revolutionary drywall reduces the noise heard between rooms. This means you won’t be disturbed by the dishwasher or washing machine while watching your favorite movies. And likewise, people in other rooms won’t hear those powerful speakers! Hire an expert. Even if you’re savvy with electronics and have set up speakers and receivers in the past, play it safe and hire an expert to properly install all the components in your media room. You might need more powerful circuits installed, or an expert’s touch to perfectly balance and sync the sound between your television, speaker and receiver. Plus, they’ll know how to conceal wires and give your room that clean look. Protect your investment. Many media rooms are in a basement

where mold and moisture are a constant threat. The space needs to remain dry to provide a healthy environment. PURPLE XP drywall made by National Gypsum is mold and moisture resistant, providing added protection for your investment. Buy a television. Because you want more of a movie theater feel, you may be tempted to buy a projector and a screen. But most people who do this end up replacing it with a television. Why? Make sure you have the right lighting. From color-changing LED lightbulbs to dimmers on sound bars, there is no end to how creative you can get with the lighting in your media room. No matter what you do, be sure you can control the light in order to accommodate a variety of situations: dark for the dramatic scenes and just enough light for when the pizza arrives. To really achieve the full effect that a modern media room can offer, tear down the walls and start at the studs. The right drywall is as important as the right speaker. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call In Source Logic at 702-659-7766 for information regarding the Trustee’s Sale or visit the Internet Web site address listed below for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, CA08000184-15-1. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
