Mission Hospital Foundation receives a generous transformational gift to name the hospital’s new Cancer Institute opening in 2019 Judi and Bill Leonard’s charitable donation is the largest gift in Mission Hospital Foundation’s 23-year history

Judi and Bill Leonard, longstanding members of the Mission Hospital family, have made a transformational legacy gift to name the hospital’s new Cancer Institute. Their eight-figure gift will significantly advance cancer care for the nearly two million people who live in south Orange County. The new 104,000-square-foot building, to be dedicated the Judi and Bill Leonard Institute for Cancer Prevention, Treatment and Wellness at Mission Hospital, is currently under construction and will open in 2019. The Leonard’s first gift to Mission Hospital was in May 1999; through a direct mail solicitation they donated $100 to support cancer programs and services. Over the past 15 years, Judi and Bill, and the Leonard Family Foundation, have made 24 individual gifts, generously supporting multiple events and campaigns. “We are humbled and blessed by the engagement of the Leonard family and the enduring impact they will have on the health and well-being of our community,” says Tarek Salaway, Chief Executive of Mission Hospital. “Their generosity will enable Mission Hospital to revolutionize cancer care to south Orange County and provide a comprehensive level of care that was previously unavailable in our community.” Bill served on the Foundation Board of Directors from 2006 to 2014, and his daughter, Debbie Perez, has served on the board since 2015. The Leonards instilled the value of philanthropy from a young age in their children, Chris and Debbie and they continue to live those precious values.

New York’s Streisand Movie Set Apartment! New York virtually crawls with celebrities as much as Hollywood, but being a much older city, it also had some of the world’s most renowned celebrities who called it home in the old days. Such is the case with this Upper West Side, 14-story co-op on a tree-lined street surrounded by other notable pre-war architecture near Central Park. The building at 505 West End Avenue was first an inspiration to Sergei Rachmaninoff, the Russian pianist, composer and conductor whose family fled Russia after the Russian Revolution. Sergei lived in the building for several years around 1920 and composed many of his most important works there, just a few floors above the same apartment, now for sale, that Barbara Streisand chose as the set for her 1996 romantic comedy The Mirror Has Two Faces. Streisand was enchanted by apartment 3B when she was researching locations for the film she both produced and starred in - inspired by the light filling the space and the views of treetops and architectural elements of the buildings across the street. The movie’s storyline of a marriage of convenience between actors Streisand and Jeff Bridges displaying their most dumpy demeanors remained sans consummate until Streisand’s character decided to transform herself into a glamorous, self-assured vamp, which finally lit the spark. A story almost paralleling the history of this now glamorous and sophisticated apartment. The film was nominated for multiple Oscar, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for which Lauren Bacall walked away with several for best supporting actress. Lauren played the role of Streisand’s disapproving mother whose character apparently had always undermined her daughter’s

Page 4

self-esteem until late in the film when she ended up being a motivating force in Streisand’s character’s miraculous makeover. The delivery of her disdain added significantly to the underlying comedy, for which she was highly praised by the critics. Designed by architect Gaetano Ajello and built in 1922, the building followed Ajello’s pre-World War I flamboyant period. In the 1920s, his work tended to be a bit more sedate, his style recognized throughout the Upper West Side where his apartment buildings are most prolific. Unit 3B, with its 11 large windows has three bedrooms, two baths and has undergone a total restoration from the studs out. Cheerful but sophisticated, the apartment has new everything from new copper pipes, new marble, crown molding, wainscoting and stunning new herringbone and inset oak flooring. Rooms are large with the living room and dining room open to each other with large, windowed marble baths, a bright

custom designer kitchen with upscale appliances such as Sub-Zero, Wolf and Miele and an in-unit washer and dryer. The scale of the rooms is large including the entrance foyer and large bedrooms with plenty of room to roam. The building has a live-in superintendent with bike storage and laundry on the lower level. The listing agent is Brian Lewis of Compass in Manhattan.

Barbra Streisand and Rachmaninoff, both of whom had the option of picking anything they wanted, knew a good thing when they saw 505 West End Avenue with the rare element of 11 large windows so close to all the New York action. Priced at $2.895 million. For More Information: www.toptenrealestatedeals.com

Planning the perfect Easter egg hunt From the White House lawn to the family living room, children of all ages will soon be searching behind bushes and couches to find that last treasured egg. If you don’t have an Easter egg hunt to attend in your community this year, consider planning your own and inviting all the neighbors to participate. Here are some tips for planning the perfect Easter egg hunt: Find out what kids want Kids each have their favorite items they’re hoping they’ll find in their baskets. To deliver the best gifts from the Easter Bunny, you have to think like the kids. See what kids think about the Easter Bunny and the goodies he’s going to bring this year in this adorable video by Personal Creations. Pick the right eggs Load up on eggs of all shapes and sizes. Plastic eggs are the best for hiding, because if an egg isn’t found, it won’t spoil and cause a mess later. Plastic eggs are very colorful, making them easier to spot by both little children and older kids alike. If you’re inviting a lot of younger children to the egg hunt, consider placing several eggs in a soft Easter basket like the Large Plush Bunny Basket and placing it under a tree to make it faster and easier for kids to find. Invite the Easter Bunny Rent an Easter Bunny costume and ask someone to wear it to welcome guests of all sizes to your Easter egg hunt. Ask someone else to be a digital photographer who can email your guests photos taken of their kids posing with the Easter bunny - parents will appreciate the opportunity to have their kids take a picture with the Easter Bunny without having to make a special visit to the local mall. Hang a personalized Egg Hunt Banner

in the yard and decorate the area with streamers and balloons to give your backyard a festive feel. Prepare for rain April showers aren’t outside of the scope of possibilities, so prepare for a rainy day situation. You don’t want a handful of disappointed children at the party. Utilize furniture and the garage to hide eggs throughout the house. Prepare a map of the house and how many eggs are in each room so kids who aren’t familiar with the layout of the home can still find their fair share of hidden eggs. Consider treats that aren’t candy Don’t limit your Easter party treats to just

Bunny bowls and spring flavors get families hopping to the table for Easter Spring into the season: Great dishes and flavors to celebrate spring’s arrival When spring finally arrives, we gladly shed heavy coats and snow boots. Meals, too, lighten up with warmer weather, as we leave behind hearty soups and heavier meals in favor of more sprightly and seasonal fare. Spring celebrations - from Easter brunches to graduation dinners - are great opportunities to revisit old favorites and try something new. This spring, why not celebrate the season with a blend of familiar and new? Here are some favorite flavors and foods of spring, along with some ideas for giving them new appeal: * With bright colors and strong, sweet flavor, citrus adds zing to spring. Lemon is ideal for incorporating into spring dishes, from enhancing veggies like early spring squash, to delightful desserts like Lemon PullAparts. Lemon also plays well with a variety of fish dishes - perfect for anyone observing fish Fridays during Lent. * Baked dinner rolls are a springtime favorite for every meal of the day. What Easter brunch would be complete without them? Dinner rolls take on fun seasonal flare when you use ready-made options like Rhodes Bake-N-Serv dinner rolls to create edible works of art like bunny shapes, egg baskets and rabbit-shaped veggie dip bowls. Simply thaw the raw rolls, and shape them while still cold to make a variety of delicious, creative shapes - without the work of mixing and kneading your own dough.

Page 10

Try these two fun recipes to dress up any springtime table: Bunny Buns Ingredients: 1 package Rhodes Dinner Rolls (thawed but still cold) Directions: Cut a small piece of one roll for a tail. Roll remaining piece into a 16inch rope with pointed ends. Twist top of rope together. Place on a large baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Pull pointed ends apart for ears. You can find more great dinner roll recipes at www.rhodesbread.com. * Spring brings the arrival of one of the most delectable edible buds - artichokes. Add them to pasta salads or green salads for flavorful pizzazz. In addition to being delicious and timely for spring, artichokes are packed with antioxidants and fiber, and are believed to deliver a host of health benefits, including improved digestion and lower cholesterol. * Peas are the quintessential green veggie of spring. Low in calories and high in vitamin A, peas are a go-anywhere ingredient. Raw peas add color and snap to spring salads. A handful tossed into warm pasta dishes add a layer of flavor and enhance nutritional value. Cream them as a base for a cold soup or a sauce to enhance fish. * Nutritionists advise Americans to eat a colorful range of fruits and vegetables, and for sheer bright color and great flavor it’s hard to beat strawberries. They also deliver a wealth of health benefits since they’re packed with key nutrients like potassium, magnesium and vitamin K - all important for overall good health. Eat them sliced and sprinkled with an alternative sweetener for a simple, low-calorie treat, or try something new and original like strawberry bruschetta. - (BPT)

5 ways to jump-start your heart health

If you’re looking to improve your heart health, each day is all about making a choice that moves you in the right direction. You’d rather stay in with a big bowl of ice cream. But maybe today, you could click off the TV set and take a walk with a friend. It’s easy to see why heart health is a pressing concern. One in three adults live with one or more types of cardiovascular disease, according a review published in the journal Circulation. Over time, changes in the heart and blood vessels can lead to a host of devastating problems, including heart attack, heart failure and stroke. On top of that, lifestyle factors, such as poor diet and a lack of physical activity, lead to one in five deaths in the U.S., according to a study published in 2011 in the Journal of Public Health. The good news is as the weeks and months pass, these healthy choices

do pay off and make meaningful shifts in your health profile. Turning these choices into habits is well worth the time and effort. Choice by choice, you could see big improvements. 1. Reach for whole foods Diets abound, but the classic Mediterranean-based diet always comes up as a winner for heart health. It’s simple to follow because it’s made up of whole, healthy foods, like fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, olive oil and fish. In 2013, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine said switching to a Mediterranean diet can prevent 30 percent of heart attacks, strokes and heart disease deaths in high-risk people. 2. Get up and move more often The Surgeon General says 2.5 hours of moderate intensity exercise each week promotes good heart health. To get started, visit your doctor to find out what is safe for you. Then work activities you enjoy into your routine, whether it’s a walk in the woods, a leisurely bike ride or swimming laps at the community pool. 3. Seek the company of others This may not come up at the doctor’s office, but the time we spend with friends and family does reward

us with better heart health. Isolation is linked to depression and that’s linked to higher rates of heart disease. Pick up the phone and call someone. Schedule lunch with an old friend, plan a special day with younger relatives or sign up for an activity. 4. De-stress and decompress If you constantly feel the effects of stress in your body, it may be time to take steps to reverse that. Scientists haven’t found definitive proof, but they believe stress could trigger inflammation, a precursor to heart disease. So go ahead, and seek some joy: Laughter releases “good” HDL cholesterol. Exercise is also a proven stress buster, and studies show a mindfulness mediation practice reduces blood pressure. 5. Know your risks Hopefully, you’re already making those annual doctor visits because your blood sugar, blood pressure, weight and cholesterol can all tell us something about our heart health. But what you really want to know is whether there is fatty buildup in your arteries, because toocan lead to stroke, peripheral vascular disease and carotid artery stenosis. Doctor office tests offer indicators and warning signs, but they don’t tell you how much you’re blocked.

Luckily, there’s a safe and affordable test that gives you the hard data on what is happening inside your body: vascular screening. If you think learning the truth will discourage you, one study indicates the opposite may be true. The report published in the Journal of Community Medicine and Health Education says people who had vascular screening reported more positive changes to their health several months after their vascular screening than the control subjects who weren’t screened. For example, 61 percent of screened respondents said they ate healthier foods since the screening, versus the 46 percent who were not screened. Truth is empowering and it can give people a powerful incentive to change, even if the news isn’t what you’re hoping to hear. To get your own vascular test, find out when Life Line Screening is coming to your community. You’ll get a results pack you can take to your doctor, so you can work on a plan together to improve your health. To find out when a Life Line screening clinic may be scheduled in your area, visit www.lifelinescreening. com or call (877) 754-9631. - (BPT)

History of the Easter Bonnet

An Easter Bonnet represents the tail-end of a tradition of wearing new clothes at Easter, in harmony with the renewal of the year and the promise of spiritual renewal and redemption. The “Easter bonnet” was fixed in popular culture by Irving Berlin, whose frame of reference was the Easter parade in New York City, a festive walkabout that made its way down Fifth Avenue from St. Patrick’s Cathedral: In your Easter bonnet with all the frills upon it, You’ll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade. At the depths of the Great Depression a new hat at Easter, or a refurbished old one, was a simple luxury. The selfconsciously quaint “bonnet”, which had been tongue-in-cheek euphemism for a hat for more than a generation, supplied Berlin with his rhyme. The broader English tradition of new clothes at Easter has been noticed in late 16th century references by Peter Opie, who noted Mercutio’s taunting of Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet: “Did’st thou not fall out with a Tailor for wearing his new Doublet before Easter?” At just the same time Thomas Lodge’s moralising pasmphlet Wits Miserie (London, 1596) recorded “The farmer that was contented in times past with his Russet Frocke & Mockado sleeues, now sels a Cow against Easter to buy him silken geere for his Credit”. In Samuel Pepys’ diary, 30 March (Easter Day) 1662, Page 16

he notes “Having my old black suit new furbished, I was pretty neat in clothes to-day, and my boy, his old suit new trimmed, very handsome.” Poor Robin, an 18th-century English almanac maker, offered the doggerel: At Easter let your clothes be new. Or else be sure you will it rue. And the notion that ill-luck would dog the one who had not something new at Easter expanded in the 19th century. Today the Easter bonnet is a type of hat that women and girls wear to Easter services, and in the Easter parade following it. Ladies purchased new and elaborate designs for particular church services, and in the case of Easter, taking the opportunity of the end of Lent to buy luxury items. Now, in a more casual society, Easter Bonnets are becoming harder to find,[8] as fewer and fewer women bother with the tradition. Modern Easter bonnets for children are usually white wide-brimmed hats with a pastel colored satin ribbon around it and tied in a bow. It may also have flowers or other springtime motifs on top, and may match a special dress picked out for the occasion. Until recently, it was popular in infant school to ask a child to design an Easter-themed hat at that time of year. The aim was to get their parents to wear it to Easter services.

Though often taken for granted, smell is a powerful sense, especially when a gentle scent can instantly transport your mind to another time and place. From retrieving pleasant memories to boosting your mood, your sense of smell plays an important role in your overall wellbeing. The scents you detect are actually tiny molecules that interact with sensory centers in your brain to elicit responses, such as happiness, relaxation or stimulation. For centuries, smell has been associated with healing practices. Today, the restorative and uplifting benefits of smell can be found throughout everyday life. Next time you’re feeling down or need to soothe your mind, turn to one of these aromatic options: Light candles with a soft, calming scent to relax and unwind. Try lighting the candle when you walk in the door from a long day, and by the time you’ve changed into some comfy clothes, the aroma should begin to fill the air. Take a warm shower and lather up with a scent-driven body wash, such as Softsoap Honey Creme & Lavender or Blooming Jasmine & Plum Moisturizing Body Wash. Inspired by trending ingredients and crafted with real extracts of honey, lavender, jasmine and plum, these body washes can create an invigorating sensory experience that moisturizes and cleanses your skin.

Energize your morning with a vibrant air freshener in your car. According to the National Sleep Foundation, scents like citrus, rosemary, peppermint and eucalyptus are stimulants that can help you shake off sleepiness and put some pep in your step. In fact, fruity smells like citrus actually stimulate serotonin, the brain’s “happy” chemical. A fresh bouquet of flowers is an instant mood-booster, but not just

because of their beauty. Numerous studies have shown the emotional benefits of a vase filled with fresh blooms. Take that goodwill a step further by taking a trip to a flower market to purchase fresh flowers with fragrant qualities that can brighten your desk or a room at home. It may be the anticipation of a tasty treat to come, or maybe it’s the connection to childhood memories with a beloved relative, but few can

resist the smell of homemade treats baking in the oven. Of course you can cheat and light a candle or burn wax or oil that mimics the scent, but nothing comes close to the therapy of freeing your hands and mind to bake and create that delicious aroma on your own. Prepping tips for spring outdoor projects Soon, winter will be winding down and homeowners will start planning and prepping for - a variety of outdoor projects for spring. From cleaning, repairing or replacing decks, to creating raised beds for veggies and flowers, now is the time to start gearing up for those spring projects. Cleaning up Start with spring cleaning existing structures. Take a weekend to clean decks, gazebos and pergolas of dirt, debris, mold and mildew. For structures made of naturally durable Western Red Cedar, a broom, garden sprayer and hose, plus a little bleach are all you need. Sweep winter debris such as twigs and leaves from decks, taking care to clean between planks on horizontal

surfaces. This facilitates airflow and drainage, and can help prevent a buildup of moisture when spring showers arrive. Next, use a garden sprayer to apply a-mild oxygen bleach solution to kill mold and mildew. Be sure to leave the bleach solution on the wood surface for approximately 30 minutes, and then rinse with water. Never use a pressure washer as it can damage the wood. Maintenance and repair Carefully inspect outdoor structures for wear and tear. While Western Red Cedar contains natural preservatives that make the wood durable, all outdoor structures require annual care, including those made of pressure-treated lumber or composites. Check planks, beams and boards for cracking, warping or rough spots and repair accordingly. Replace damaged wood, and be sure to examine hardware to ensure it’s working properly and free of rust. New projects If you’ve always dreamed about lounging on a lovely deck on a summer afternoon, or savoring a spring morning beneath the shade of a decorative pergola, now’s the time

to start planning the project. A great deck is the showpiece of an inspired backyard, and spring is a prime time to add one. To ensure your deck affords you the most value and enjoyment, consider using an online deck planner to help you envision your deck before you begin building. As gardening grows in popularity, you might consider adding raised planting beds to your landscaping. Raised beds not only make caring for and harvesting your garden easier no bending required - they can also function as a decorative enhancement to your outdoor environment. The material you choose will influence the longevity, beauty and enjoyment of your structure, so carefully consider your options before deciding. “Many homeowners choose Western Red Cedar for its beauty and natural durability,” says Paul Mackie, western area manager, Western Red Cedar Lumber Association, or “Mr. Cedar” as he is known in the industry. “It has a deep, rich luster that other woods and man-made materials just can’t match. Plus, it’s a greener choice because it’s renewable and recyclable - unlike composites - and

doesn’t require chemical treatment as non-durable wood species do. It’s naturally rot and insect resistant, and you can stain it or leave it natural, depending on your preference.” The green qualities and durability of Western Red Cedar make it a great choice for virtually any outdoor structure - including those popular wooden playsets that begin appearing like wildflowers in backyards across the country every spring. Whatever project you’re dreaming of this spring - from building a new deck, pergola, or planting beds to refurbishing an existing outdoor structure or palyset - careful planning, cleaning, maintenance and the right materials can ensure your project adds value and beauty to your home environment.

If you’re looking for ways to bring some extra energy to your lifestyle and shake up your routine as spring rolls around, you may be surprised to find how seemingly simple changes can make a big difference. Sometimes all you need is a little change in your daily routine or a small adjustment to jump-start a fresh take on life. Ideas don’t have to be big to be impactful. Sign up for a fitness class. When your workout regimen feels repetitive, it’s hard to stay motivated. One way to wake up your workout is to enroll in a new class, where you can learn new moves and put your muscles to work in new ways. Make your down time productive. Your idle time may be minimal, so it’s all the more reason to fill those hours with productive activities that make you happy. If you’re looking to take on a new hobby, now’s the time to commit to your newfound passion, whether it’s understanding the ins and outs of digital photography or volunteering for a cause close to your heart. Improve your oral health. Maintaining your overall health includes your mouth too. An option like Colgate Total Advanced Health Mouthwash can help you take charge of your oral health. This mouthwash is the first oral care product to contain dual-layer technology that combines freshening power with germ killing ingredients – simply shake to activate and see the results in the sink. Learn more at ColgateTotal.com. Invest in a quality mattress. Giving yourself a good night of sleep is one of the most important things you can do to improve your overall health. That’s because your sleeping hours are when your body works to repair and rejuvenate from the tolls

It’s time for sandwiches to move aside, because this school year bento-box style lunches reign king on campus. Bento boxes provide not only the space for healthy and nutritious food choices, but also creativity. Isn’t it time for lunch to be more fun? Nutrition blogger and mom of two, Sally Kuzemchak, uses Lil Snappers kid-sized fruit when she creates bento box lunches because they are easy for little students to hold, serving size proportionate and each 3-pound pouch provides enough fruit for lunches and snacks for an entire

of daily living. If your mattress is outdated or saggy, upgrade for better rest and better health. Explore a new look. A fresh makeup shade or a new hairstyle can give you confidence and put you on a path toward looking as great as you feel. Changes don’t have to be bold or dramatic to make a difference. Simply switching up your eye shadow or lipstick can transform your look for an extra boost inside and out. Redecorate a room in your home. Whether it’s a favorite space or a room you avoid because it needs some TLC, changing the appearance of your environment can create a place for you to feel at home, and that’s simply good for the mind and soul.

Create an oasis for relaxing or a more productive work space and you’ll not only see the results, you’ll feel good when you’re using the space, too. Make more time to socialize. Breaking up your regular schedule can give you the variety you need to unplug and enjoy the lighter side of life. Make plans with friends for no special reason; simply enjoy the company and unwind. Adding some pep to your step doesn’t have to mean major changes. Just a few adjustments can have you breaking out of an old pattern and stepping into a healthier lifestyle with ease. week. On top of that, the fruit can be sliced up for dipping in almond butter or yogurt sprinkled with cinnamon or cut up into a fruit salad, perfect for the three or four compartments in a bento box. Studies indicate healthy eating can influence the cognitive ability and intelligence levels of students, and balanced midday meals of fruits, proteins, carbohydrates and healthy fats are best. For a well-rounded lunch, parents can fill bento boxes with fresh pasta alongside sliced carrots and grapes, taco fixings with a Lil Snappers apple or a fun and creative meal-on-a-stick to keep school-aged children satisfied throughout the day. Preparing healthy, filling lunches shouldn’t be difficult, and with bentobox style meals your kids will never be bored. With a little preparation and recipe inspiration, crafting back to school lunches will be a breeze. Quick tips for getting the most out of your smartphone camera Today, the majority of adults have a mobile phone, and we’re using it for far more things than simply making phone calls. According to a report from The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, of the 85 percent of American adults who own a cellphone, 85 percent use their cellphones to take photos. Smartphone cameras are quickly replacing basic digital cameras for snapping photos on the go, and for good reason. Capturing a memorable moment is easy with your cellphone at your side, but if you aren’t sure what you’re doing, you may end up with fuzzy, dark or distorted pictures. To help you get the most out of your smartphone’s camera capabilities, Stephen Sneeden, Xperia product marketing manager at Sony Mobile Communications, offers some expert tips: Tip No. 1: Get to know your device Most new smartphone cameras offer multiple camera functions, effects, settings and options. It’s important to learn what’s available on your phone so you don’t miss a beat. Visit the manufacturer’s website or check out tutorial videos on YouTube many phone makers now make these available to consumers for free.

Tip No. 2: Know when to use certain functions - and when to turn them off. While your smartphone camera may have a flash, zoom and other features, sometimes those functions won’t be optimum for the conditions in which you’re shooting. For example, turning off the flash may help prevent glare, bright spots and red-eye in certain situations. Zooming may cause an image to degrade or blur; you may want to shoot the entire image and then use editing software to crop it for the portion of the image you want to focus on. Tip No. 3: Consider an upgrade. Technology is ever-evolving, and smartphone cameras are constantly being improved. If you’ve had your phone for a while and aren’t happy with the photos it takes, it may be time for an upgrade. When shopping, analyze key camera elements like megapixel count, sensor quality, user interface and ease of use. Most smartphones have 8 megapixel, primary cameras. The Xperia ZL from Sony outshines that standard with a 13 megapixel camera and HDR (high dynamic range) for photos and videos. Tip No. 4: Make the most of HD technology. High resolution

capabilities are a significant advantage for smartphone videographers. Look for cameras that offer Full HD recording. This function gives you the ability to capture details that translate well on larger HD screens like that of a TV. Tip No. 5: Download free photo apps. Enhance your phone’s photo capabilities with some of today’s best photo apps that cost absolutely nothing. The award-winning application Snapseed (iOS, Android) allows you to adjust saturation, color levels, brightness, contrast as well as edit and enhance styling with a variety of filters. Quickly crop, edit

and fix flaws with Adobe’s Photoshop Express (iOS, Android). Of course, social media junkies love Instagram (Android, iOS) because it’s a snap to share photos across social networks like Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter. Tip No 6: Don’t forget photo basics The principles of good picturetaking remain the same, no matter what kind of camera you use. That means it’s important to keep the lens clean, carefully frame the shot, fill the frame with your subject, make sure the image is in focus, pay attention to lighting, and - when photographing kids and pets - get on the same level as your subject.

When you renovate an older home, the goal is not always to replace old with new. In fact, some renovations are all about preserving the past with a design that reflects and pays respect to the yesteryear features that make your home unique. Whether you’re planning a renovation for a 60-year-old home, or working to infuse some retro charm into a newer place, the ultimate goal is capturing the nostalgic feel of older homes: the classic lines, hardwood, moldings and woodwork, and features like fireplaces or stonework, bannisters or windows and doors. The kitchen can be a particularly challenging room to renovate because the blend of old charm with modern convenience and functionality can seem at complete odds. These ideas from the design experts at Elmira Stove Works can help you combine practical function with timeless features for a room filled with character and purpose. Keep cabinet facades true to the era. Updating the cabinets is practically a necessity for any vintage kitchen remodel. Although many older kitchens lacked the cabinet space modern homeowners desire, you can still achieve a retro look with ample storage by focusing more

on the shape and style than on the quantity. With this approach, you can add as much storage and as many functional amenities as your space allows while still capturing the right look for the era. Opt for sleek and understated styles, or for some extra flair incorporate exaggerated angles and curves common to mid-century design. Material and color options abound, so you’re free to go bold and glossy or more subdued. Design with a focal point in mind. In a retro kitchen, standout elements such as colorful appliances can enhance the space and act as a focal point in the room. Stainless steel has become almost “default” in kitchens from coast to coast. Whether your home is on the beach, in the mountains or in a suburban neighborhood, for those who find beauty in the past, choosing a retro refrigerator or a vintage stove might be a better choice. These appliances act as a major design element in the space, and fortunately there are plenty of options when it comes to retro appliances with exciting pops of color. One example is the Northstar line offered by Elmira Stove Works, which offers the ideal blend of form plus function: soft lines, rounded corners and refreshing

Tips for safe vacation travel

Vacations are keeping Americans busy this season. But, with all that fun, make sure you don’t overlook caring for your car and tires. If you do, the only thing you’ll be doing is standing in the breakdown lane. Americans will travel 1,045 miles on average to reach their destinations, according to the recent Hankook Tire Quarterly Gauge Index. -Before leaving for a trip, however, only 48 percent of Americans check their vehicle’s tires for proper tread depth or tire damage. Drivers should monitor their tire pressure and tread and look for tire damage such as bruises, tears or punctures at least once a month. In addition to checking your tires, make sure you have your spare tire ready to go. These days, most people aren’t considering this to be a top priority - only 21 percent think a spare tire is the most necessary item for travel safety. In fact, 52 percent of Americans consider their cellphone to be the most important safety item. While you’re checking the pressure and condition of your vehicle’s tires that are actually touching the ground, don’t forget to check your spare tire. The last thing you want to encounter when you have a blowout is a flat or Page 28

underinflated spare. And where do people turn when in a bind with car troubles? Thirty-three percent of American drivers said they would call AAA first before calling a sibling, friend, parent or colleague. We all want to do our best to avoid possible issues on the road, so here are some safety tips from Hankook Tire America to keep in mind: Park in the shade - Air in your vehicle’s tires expands as temperatures rise, in fact for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit increase in ambient air temperature, your tire’s inflation pressure can go up by about 1 psi. Check fluid levels - Make sure the check includes topping off window washer, brake and transmission fluids and motor oil. Rotate your tires - Tire rotation is another important safety precaution and is recommended every 7,000 miles or six months. Rotating tires is the practice of moving automobile tires from one position on the car to another to provide optimal wear. Check brakes and brake pads/ shoes - Be sure to monitor them closely, especially if you can’t remember how long it has been since they were last checked.

The Coto de Caza News

Don’t overload your car Overloading a car can lead to tire deformation, so be sure to check the vehicle’s owner’s manual for the recommended maximum weight capacity. Check your trunk - It is important to make sure you have the tools you need to change a flat: a spare tire, a

lug wrench and a jack. Choose the right tire - Tires that offer lower rolling resistance, such as the Ultra-High Performance AllSeason Hankook Ventus S1 noble2, can deliver fuel savings by minimizing wasted energy as a tire rolls, thereby improving fuel efficiency and saving consumers money. - (BPT)
