Stallions’ Girls Soccer First to Win League in San Juan Hills History San Juan Hills Stallions Crush Mission Viejo Diablos 2-1 to Win Championship

By: Keila Astono, Reporter After a particularly hard-fought season, Stallions’ girls varsity soccer finally brought home a title for San Juan Hills High. On February 7, Stallions crushed the Mission Viejo Diablos by 2-1 in enemy territory to claim the spot as Sea View League Champions for the first time in school history. The potential outcome of this game was a complete toss-up between two similarly strong teams: Stallions came into this last league match with a record of 4 wins and 3 ties, while the Diablos followed suit with 3 wins, 2 ties, and 2 losses. But wasn’t the first time the two have met head to head this year—just two and a half weeks before, they left the field with 0-0 in a conference game on January 22. In fact, San Juan’s first half of the season consisted of three repeated 0-0 ties, with the exception of only one win. While their record had the attributes of a firm defense, they still sat at second place by the end of the first round of league under Trabuco Hills High and needed a push to break through to the top. So what changed ever since the last the teams met? A shift of the 11 starters was implemented by the coaching staff, who knew an adjustment of strategy was due in order to strike effectively. “We still stuck with the same 11, but we moved Megan McClellan into the midfield and Erin Sulfaro to center forward,” Head Coach Farrel Moore shared. “Moving Megan into the midfield gave us more distribution and moving Erin up top gave us more pace, speed, and aggression.” Not to ignore defense, where a lot of credit is due to senior Erika Wiles and sophomore Elyse Hall who formed a center back partnership that held the spine of the team. Where offense struggled to find their flow during the first round, defense proved as a consistent asset throughout the whole of the season, giving up only 2 goals out of the 8 league games. But changes that affected how the team performed sourced beyond tactics and from a drive within the girls themselves. For many of them, this season was their last year ever playing competitive soccer. 12 out of the 23 girls are seniors, meaning this was their final chance to leave their legacy at San Juan. As they realized that winning league was not far from sight, the girls were determined to turn around their record and write their own fate. They labeled this year early on as “banner season,” hoping this year would be the one to seal their victory and kept reciting the phrase, a show of their eagerness for the title. They truly played with heart at the turn of the rounds, and were driven with insatiable hunger to attack with more vigor. Coach Moore admitted that the “number one reason for success was

Time Change for spring 2018 is this weekend By Mary Zeiher When does the time change for Spring 2018? That time change question seems to be something that a lot of people are asking themselves. For this year, 2018, the time change will occur on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 2 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. And remember for the time change 2018 this spring you will “spring forward”, or move your clocks ahead one hour. It is easy to remember which way to move your clocks if you follow the old adage of, in the spring you “Spring forward” and in the fall you “Fall back”. Remember that the way this whole time change thing is setup is as follows: At 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March each year, we set our clocks forward one hour ahead of Standard Time (“Spring forward”). Then at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November each year we “Fall back” and we set our clocks back one hour and this returns us to Standard Time. Daylight Saving Time was actually put in place during World War I in the United States as a way to save energy for the war production. By changing the time it made for longer days between April and October. Then again during World War II the government required the states to perform the instituted time change. But then after the wars the states were free to choose whether or not they wanted to institute the Daylight Savings time or not. But by 1966, Congress got involved and passed the Uniform Time Act, which then dictated the length of Daylight Saving Time. These longer

days do mean that we use less energy as a country in lighting our homes and businesses. In 2005, Congress came along again and passed the Energy Policy Act. That started that starting in 2007 that Daylight Saving Time would be four weeks longer. The thought process was that we would be able to save approximately 10,000 barrels of

oil each day through reducing power requirements of businesses. But that is a very difficult metric to verify and to know if we are seeing the savings that was projected. So, when does the time change for spring 2018? Just remember that on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 2 a.m. Eastern Standard Time you will set your clocks back one hour.

Governor Brown Appoints Orange County Superior Court Judges

Cynthia M. Herrera Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced the appointment of California superior court judges. Cynthia M. Herrera, 46, of Santa Ana, has been appointed to a judgeship in the Orange County Superior Court. Herrera has served as a senior deputy district attorney in the Orange County District Attorney’s Office since 2011, where she has been a deputy district attorney since 1997. She earned a Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Irvine. She fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge W. Michael Hayes. Herrera is a Democrat.

Kimberly A. Knill Kimberly A. Knill, 54, of Aliso Viejo, has been appointed to a judgeship in the Orange County Superior Court. Knill has served as a senior appellate attorney at the Fourth District Court of Appeal since 2016. Local Author Publishes Debut Novel Set in Coto de Caza By Heather Ezell I was a thirteen-year-old eighthgrade student at Las Flores Middle School when I started secretly writing the novel that would become my debut, Nothing Left to Burn. I was what you would call a sick kid, having grown up in and out of doctors’ offices, and so reading and writing were my solace. By the time I finished the first draft as a freshman at Tesoro High School, I knew I was a writer, and that my dream was to be an author. My stubbornness kept me from ever giving up on that dream, even when I had received over 200 rejections years later. In addition to being a stubborn writer, I was also a stubborn angry cliché of a teenager. I absolutely despised Orange County, resenting my shiny perfect slice of it with a vengeance. Our community felt constricting to me, a plastic bubble I wanted to burst. I’m a bit of a recluse, a lover of rain and lush forests. I don’t particularly like the sun, beaches, outdoor sports, social gatherings, or open-air malls. And so I knew two things as a teen: first, that I would one day publish my novel, even if it took me fifty years, and second, that I’d escape Southern California at the earliest opportunity. Over a decade later, at age twentysix, that first novel I penned at thirteen will be in bookstores next week, on March 13th, published by a young adult imprint at Penguin Random House. And, while I technically “escaped” Orange County when I was seventeen, I return home often to visit—my parents still live in the same house in Dove Canyon that my three siblings and I grew up in, the same house from which we were evacuated for a wildfire when I was three. I also now understand that I never truly left Orange County, nor did I ever really want to. My obsession with this community and fear of the wildfires that so often menace the land run so deep that, in many ways, it became a leading character in Nothing Left to Burn. Because here’s the truth: the resentment I felt as a teen wasn’t so much bitterness but frustration in my failed attempts to understand the particulars of our home. There is a glorious dichotomy that exists

here. Within and around the polished subdivisions and mini-malls, the perfectly groomed yards and homes, the golf courses and sparkling pools, there is a contradictory harsh natural beauty. The jagged cliffs of Laguna meet the rolling hills of Irvine. The Cleveland National Forest ripples out in waves of chaparral, and those banks give way to hills, and the hills give way to mountains. The autumn Santa Ana winds sweep over our homes and through the wild land, and the peaks of Saddleback Mountain can always act as a compass, if we were to ever need it. Our home is a place of extreme contrasts, and there’s an evocative brilliance in those divergences. Here, there is peace and beauty, luxury and ease, diversity and ruggedness. In Nothing Left to Burn, Coto de Caza resident and arguably angsty teenager Audrey Harper is evacuated for a raging wildfire and is propelled on a daylong expedition throughout our region: Coto to the Starbucks on Antonio Parkway back to Coto to CHOC to Fashion Island to Tesoro High School and beyond (don’t worry, a map was designed for the book to help you follow along!). And it’s in seeing her home—both her literal house and the communities of Coto and Dove and afar—under direct threat that Audrey is finally able to recognize the beauty of Orange County’s land and culture. As Audrey forgives herself for her own setbacks (quitting ballet, losing herself in first love, being an absent sister and friend, putting unreasonable expectations on herself), she forgives Orange County for its flaws, the perpetual heat, polish, and high expectations. Looking back on the twelve years of revising and rewriting and the relentless rejections, I now understand that I needed to leave Orange County in order to appreciate how to depict it on the page. New member Initiations take place every month, but the performance of the initiation ritual by past Lodge officers takes place only once a year, as this month the current officers are preparing for their busy roles in the coming year.

Exalted Ruler Mike Long praised the Past Exalted Rulers saying, “These dedicated Elks have spent many years serving the Order and managing the charitable works of this Lodge. They have performed many roles in the initiation ritual and have played a major role in the success of our Lodge.” Long went on to name those who participated in the initiation ritual: Past Exalted Rulers Norm Jones, Harvey Boelts, Dave McLeod, Bill James, Gloria R. LeCouvre, and Jim Humphrey.

Long invited the new members and all in attendance to attend the installation of new officers on Sunday March 18 at 1:00pm. He said, “The event is an excellent time for new members and their families, as well as anyone interested in learning about the Elks, to visit the Lodge and witness one of Elkdom’s very special events.” The one hour program is open to the public. The festivities began with a sumptuous cocktail reception in the foyer of the Grand Ballroom, followed by a delectable four course dinner inside the elegant Grand Ballroom, with over 500 guests in attendance at this not-tobe-missed annual Gala. Barbara Shapiro, well-known Orange County philanthropist, Chaired this year’s gala, joined by her committee consisting of long-time Heritage Pointe Board member, Roberta Feuerstein, Ann Miller, and Elana Samson. Michelangelo ’s Romantic Tuscan Villa!

Merriam Webster defines romance as “an emotional attraction or aura belonging to an especially heroic era, adventure or activity.” Though it was centuries later when Webster wrote it, the definition could easily have described this 11th-century farmhouse that Renaissance master Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni purchased in 1549. He was 72 when he bought it, just three years after completing the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. Having stayed in the Buonarroti family for over 300 years, it has been preserved and restored by its current owner and is for sale. The original deed held by Michelangelo, wherein he was described as a “dear sculptor and Florentine citizen,” will be passed on to the new owner. A true historic treasure, it is awash with details dating from the 11th century. Some of the most notable of Michelangelo’s works are the statues of David and Pieta and the ceiling frescoes in the Sistine Chapel in Rome, including the Last Judgment. The volume of material that has been preserved, marveled over, studied and argued about by art historians for the last six centuries has enabled future generations a glimpse into the life of of this genius, from whose skill so many artists have modeled their work. Though Michelangelo considered himself a Florentine, he lived most of his life in Rome and died there in 1564 at the age of 88. Il Divino, Michelangelo’s creativity ranged from sculpture to painting, poetry, engineering and architectural design, through the refinement of the High Renaissance and into the artistic age of Mannerism. He is considered by many to be the greatest artist of all time, a major influence for Western Art. Italy has always been associated with romance, from the dream of a passionate Italian lover, which

has been immortalized around the world, to the passion of the sellers in the weekly markets or the chef’s enthusiasm when he places the big plate of black squid pasta proudly in front of you at the table. Visitors catch the passion from the people and again visually throughout the countryside. The Tuscany region especially has enticed visitors to tour its Chianti vineyards, its Medieval fortressed hill towns with narrow winding streets and its lovely and romantic hot springs where one can immerse themselves in the warmth of the water at night with candles floating in the water. Rolling hills are ablaze with Cypresses, poppies, grass, sunflowers, and tiny village cafés beckon for a stolen afternoon tête-à-tête. Tuscany calls when the suited, straight-laced, nine to five work-a-day world has reached its max on one’s nerves and spirit and there’s no better place to recharge one’s life and rekindle one’s most important personal relationships… . .or start a new one. For those who feel the thrill of romance in their connection to history by simply touching a thousand-yearold wall, it’s almost inconceivable the connection from actually living and sleeping in the same rooms and walking the same grounds as this great man did over six centuries ago. The very thought of cooking in his kitchen next to the massive stone hearth where he cooked and warmed himself or to sleep in the same room where he lay visualizing the next step of a project before dozing off. Located on over six acres above the rolling hills, the 9,687 square feet of living space is contained in three multi-story buildings, including an ancient tower, believed to date back to the 11th century. The original architecture is accented throughout with large stone fireplaces, original

Voss, CEO, American Red Cross Desert to the Sea Region. “A disaster like a home fire can happen anywhere, at any time. We urge people to take these steps now and know what they should do if an emergency occurs.” Check smoke alarm batteries. Test smoke alarms once a month. Change the batteries at least once a year – if your model requires it. Place smoke alarms on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Install smoke alarms. If someone doesn’t have smoke alarms, install them. At a minimum, put one on every level of the home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Check local building codes for additional requirements. Practice an escape plan.
