The Village Green set to sparkle at Arts Alive Festival April 28-29

Mission Viejo’s iconic Arts Alive Festival is once again primed to dazzle an array of art lovers from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29 at the Oso Viejo Community Park on the Village Green and neighboring community center at 24932 Veterans Way, as well as at the new Potocki Center for the Arts at 27301 La Paz Road. Exhibiting a “Nature as I See It” theme, festivalgoers this year will see a spectrum of musical performances, Caring Fairies along the Oso Creek Trail, a selection of art workshops at the Potocki Center, plein air painters canvassing the area, a multitude of art vendors, and of course, spectacular street painters from across the globe making the blacktop come alive.

“The Arts Alive Festival has such a warm and welcoming reputation that the Festival attracts world-class street painters,” said street painting coordinator Renee Keady. “The artists keep coming back because they tell me that they feel like we are a family and there is a true sense of the word ‘community’ here in Mission Viejo.” Admission is FREE. Visitors will find an abundance of fun activities for kids and adults alike, a bevy of food and beverages offered and a shuttle bus available from the Civic Center at 200 Civic Center during the event on both days. Spring into four simple Do It Yourself home decorating trends Whether you’re personalizing a new home or revitalizing an old room, the start of spring is when newly imagined spaces become doit-yourself realities. Here are four easy and affordable DIY tips to bring 2014’s trends into your home. Don’t just spring clean ... spring create Spring cleaning doesn’t have to mean getting rid of everything in the garage. Familiar pieces showcased in a special way can be a conversation starter. Love cycling, but have an old bicycle that you don’t ride anymore?Consider using its components to construct a unique piece of furniture to showcase your passion for the sport. Peter Debelak, co-owner of Soulcraft Woodshop and Gallery, a membership-based community woodworking workshop in Cleveland, Ohio, did just that. He used Elmer’s ProBond Advanced, a construction adhesive designed specifically for bonding porous to non-porous mixed materials, such as metal to wood or ceramic to drywall, to create a rotating wine rack made out of a bicycle wheel, as well as a shelf and coat rack constructed from a repurposed bicycle crank-set and handlebars. “More and more we’re seeing people personalize their home decor by transforming fascinating objects they love into home accessories and furnishings,” says Debelak. Go ahead, mix materials Vi n t a g e a n d c o n t e m p o r a r y design elements come together to create rustic contemporary looks. “Reclaimed materials will heavily influence DIYers, and contrasting shiny and rustic materials in projects will definitely be trending in 2014,” says KariAnne Wood, designer, blogger and owner of Thistlewood Farms. Metal, wood, glass, ceramic - all of these key materials play essential roles in making your home the center of attention. Mixing two, or even all, of these together will give you an edge in creating a unique space. Consider gluing pieces of

metal and wood together to construct an industrial-style coffee table. Able to work on almost any substrate, ProBond Advanced’s “opposites attract” formula delivers a heavyduty bond between porous and nonporous surfaces. The glue doesn’t leave a foam residue once it dries, so creating a masterpiece is as easy as glue, clamp and relax. Give piece(s) a chance Recycled wooden pallets and cable spools are trending now on Pinterest in 2014, as DIYers turn them into coffee tables, desks and wall art. “Homeowners are finding ways to bring an element of surprise to staple pieces. Taking utilitarian items and helping them live a new, more beautiful life will enhance any space this season,” says Wood. For a quick and simple patio transformation, spray paint large, wooden cable spools and use them as outdoor tables. Take it a step further by using ProBond Advanced to add a bold, ceramic tile mosaic without any grout, caulk or building required. Organize organically Most people kick spring off with a little time devoted to organizing. There are easy ways to make your current space functional for your lifestyle without sacrificing your design preferences. Don’t let closet space get cluttered; rather, make use of a space you usually ignore.

People are discovering new ways to make beautiful items more functional. That fabulous bench in your entryway may be storing winter coats in a secret storage space but your guests never need to know. Adding storage and improving organization can be just as creative as other spring decorating endeavors. Enhancing your storage solutions can include hanging an old door horizontally and attaching metal hooks to make an instant mudroom by your entryway. Wire baskets glued to wood shelves become a great home for keys, shoes, and outdoor accessories. No time to build anything? Not to worry. Simply hang a shoe rack on the back of a door, and you have a perfect set of compartments to hold supplies in any room. This season, stay on trend without busting your budget (or your back) by stepping outside of your comfort zone and embracing your most creative ideas. Whether you’re upcycling old items found in the garage into new masterpieces, or giving a more modern pop to a traditional coffee table, this year’s trends involve unique materials and bold design elements. The possibilities are endless, and it’s important to have the right materials to complete every project quickly and correctly the first time. Learn more about Elmer’s ProBond Advanced to help you get the job done. - (BPT)

With locations in Newport Beach and Irvine, Hoag for Her Center for Wellness is helping women prevent illness and build wellness across the county. “When Hoag opened its doors more than 65 years ago, our founders envisioned a hospital to serve those in need in Orange County,” said Robert T. Braithwaite, president and chief executive officer, Hoag. “Our commitment to women’s health has never been stronger and through Hoag for Her Center for Wellness, we are able to expand access to much needed health services for women in our community.” For one week each year, the international spotlight shines brightly on Orange County’s only PGA TOUR-sanctioned event. Hosted at Newport Beach Country Club, the Hoag Classic (formerly named Toshiba Classic) showcases golf legends like Fred Couples, John Daly and Bernhard Langer as they compete for the title. The tournament has become the most philanthropic PGA TOUR Champions event by raising over $20 million, including more than $1 million annually for Hoag’s Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center, military causes and other community charities. Mark your calendars now for 2019, Hoag will take on the title sponsorship of the tournament, renaming it the Hoag Classic. The 2019 Hoag Classic will be held at Newport Beach Country Club March 4-10, 2019. For more information, visit toshibaclassic.com.

With the arrival of spring comes blue skies, blooming flowers and of course - spring-cleaning. This is the perfect time for a refresher on fire safety tips that should be followed all year long. Keeping fire safety in mind when doing things around the house, such as cleaning a dryer’s lint filter after each load of laundry, will help prevent fires reminds Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. Smoke alarm facts: · Working smoke alarms reduce the risk of reported home fires. · Ensure smoke alarms are installed inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. · Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button. · Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year. If an alarm “chirps,” the battery is low and should be replaced immediately. Dryer lint facts: · The leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean dryer lint filters. · Clean the lint filter before or after each load of laundry. Remove lint Page 16

But not everything is as it seems, and as the daring theft unfolds through each of their perspectives, each of them start to question whether their attempts to inject excitement and

purpose into their lives is simply a misguided attempt at achieving the American Dream. Show time is April 26 at Edwards Big Newport 7:30-9:30 pm. ‘All Square’ is the feature film for on closing night, May 3 at 8 pm at the Lido Theater in Newport. that has collected around the drum. · Keep the area around your dryer clear of things that can burn like boxes, cleaning supplies and clothing. Cooking fire facts: · Most cooking fires in the home involve the stovetop. · Keep anything that can catch fire - oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains - away from your stovetop. · Always stay in the kitchen when frying on the stovetop. Extension cord facts: · Extension cord fires outnumbered fires beginning with permanent or detachable power cords by two times. · Check electrical cords to make sure they are not running across doorways or under carpets. Extension cords are intended for temporary use. · Have a qualified electrician add more receptacle outlets so you don’t have to use extension cords. Judy Garland’s Malibu Beach House!

Old Hollywood singer and actress House! Judy Garland put many songs on the map which have become classics. This season we will again hear Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, made popular by her in the 1944 MGM musical Meet Me in St. Louis. Garland started out as a child star of Vaudeville parents who put her on stage with her siblings to sing Jingle Bells. She took to the spotlight instantly and had to be pulled off after repeating the song seven times. From that moment on, the stage was her realm and she revelled in the positive reaction from the audience. Garland won a “special” Oscar for her performance in the film Wizard of Oz, from which her song Over the Rainbow gained forever popularity. She went on to make 35 films, including Every Sunday, Babes in Arms, Little Nelly Kelly, For Me and

My Gal, The Harvey Girls, Meet Me in St. Louis, The Pirate, Easter Parade, A Star is Born, Judgment at Nuremberg, and A Child Is Waiting, and performed in innumerable concert shows around the globe until her early death at the age of 47. Throughout her life, Judy suffered from OCD and depression and was treated with a plethora of prescription drugs, which many believed were the reason for her death. The mother of Liza Minnelli from her marriage to director Vincente Minnelli, Judy was known almost as well for her tragic personal life as she was for her outstanding talent. In 1947, Judy bought a Malibu beach house, a retreat where she could relax to the repetitive soft sounds of the surf and bask in the sunshine with all its healing properties. It was a valuable escape in so many ways. Seventy years

later and after undergoing a massive renovation in 2013, the 1,728-squarefoot house on the sand has three bedrooms, three baths and 10-foot high accordion doors that open to the wraparound deck. The kitchen has Viking appliances and granite countertops and the second floor master has vaulted ceilings and a

private deck. The property is co-listed by Russell Grether and Tony Mark of Compass Realty in Malibu. Judy Garland’s former Malibu Beach getaway house is priced at $3.695 million. For More Information: TopTenRealEstateDeals.com. Source: compass.com

Be prepared: Red Cross urges blood and platelet donation Because emergency situations are unpredictable, the American Red Cross needs regular donations to help ensure that blood products are available for patients at a moment’s notice. You can help ensure a sufficient supply for accident victims and others with serious medical conditions. This May, the American Red Cross is calling for donors to give blood and platelets regularly to be prepared to meet the needs of patients in emergency situations. According to the National Trauma Institute, trauma accounts for approximately 41 million emergency department visits and 2 million hospital admissions each year. In March 2015, Kevin Frame suffered life-threatening injuries in a head-on collision during spring break. He received blood products to treat internal injuries immediately after the accident and during multiple surgeries while recovering. “Without the blood and plasma products made available from donations, I would not be alive today to continue my rehabilitation journey,” said Frame, who had to relearn to swallow, speak and walk after the accident. Regular blood, platelet and plasma donations help ensure that blood is available at a moment’s notice. In fact, it is the blood on the shelves that is used to help save lives at the time of an accident or sudden illness. In trauma situations, when there’s no time to check a patient’s blood type, emergency personnel reach for type O negative red blood cells and type AB plasma because they can be transfused to any patient, regardless of blood type. Less than 7 percent of the population has type O negative blood, and only about 4 percent of the population has type AB blood. Platelets may also be needed to help with clotting in cases of massive bleeding. Because platelets must be transfused within five days of donation, there is a constant – often critical – need to keep up with hospital demand. Donors of all blood types are urged to roll up a sleeve this May to help meet the needs of trauma patients and others with serious medical conditions. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). All those who come to donate from April 9 to May 13, 2018, will be entered to win one of three $1,000 gift cards to a national home improvement retailer, courtesy of Suburban Propane. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at checkin. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their predonation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/ RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App. Volunteers needed Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross is to become a volunteer transportation specialist and deliver lifesaving blood products to local area hospitals. Volunteer transportation specialists play a very important role in ensuring an ample blood supply for patients in need by transporting blood and blood products. For more information and to apply for a volunteer transportation specialist position, visit rdcrss.org/driver. About the American Red Cross The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. Throw a perfect party - without costs and clutter Whether it’s your child’s birthday or your relatives are flying in from overseas to take part in a family reunion, your life is filled with special events worth celebrating. Of course, you’d love to salute every one of them with a once-in-a-lifetime party, but how do you do that without winding up with a garage filled with party clutter that you’ll never use again and an empty wallet? It’s easier than you think. Celebrating that special event doesn’t have to break the bank or leave you the not-so-proud owner of items you’ll have no use for once the party is over. There is another solution: rent what you need. You’ll wow your guests and save money in the process. Not sure what can be rented? Here are some ideas to create a party beyond your guests’ wildest expectations. Create the perfect environment Many party planners feel constrained by the materials they already own when hosting a party, but the truth is renting opportunities allow you to create an atmosphere limited only by your imagination. If you’re looking to hold your party outside, rent a tent. Your area rental

Page 24

business will have tents available in all shapes, sizes and styles, allowing you to pick the perfect one for your event. Heating and cooling units are also available so your guests will always be comfortable, regardless of weather conditions.

The Coto de Caza News

You’ll also be able to rent tables and chairs, saving you from having to try and borrow these items or, worse yet, buying more for this one occasion. It creates a more relaxing atmosphere for your guests and they’ll be able to sit and rest rather than having to stand up throughout the event. For a more formal affair, your local rental store can also provide linens, table service and stemware to complete your look. This will keep you from having to use disposables or from washing dishes when the event is finished, allowing you to relax and enjoy your company. Wow them with food If you’re in charge of planning the party, you’ve probably been nervously pondering what you will do about the food. No other party aspect requires so much work, and often you still find yourself eating leftovers for weeks. But rental stores offer several options that will help you wow your guests and indulge them at the same time. Keeping foods the perfect temperature is always a challenge when hosting an event, but there are some great options available for rent. An ice table is a great way to keep things chilled in the summer heat, preventing undesirable illness. For hot foods, chafers will keep main dishes hot for hours so guests can eat at their leisure. When it comes to that main course, grilling allows you to feed a lot of people with minimal prep work. But what if you don’t have a grill? You can always rent one. Many rental facilities

offer grills of varying sizes, allowing you the chance to pick the right grill for your event. Consider renting a popcorn machine for your party. People get hungry at different times and a popcorn machine allows your guests to serve themselves and munch on this delicious snack while they wait for the main course. Activities for kids of any age Whether it’s a birthday party, a family reunion or some other gathering, odds are children will be at your party. If your venue lacks the appropriate activities to entertain kids for the long haul, consult your area rental facility for options. An inflatable bounce house will keep your youngest guests entertained for hours while obstacle courses or laser tag are great options for your teenage guests. And the biggest kids at your event will enjoy a casino night with the games you rented. If you’re expecting a large number of children at that family reunion, you may also consider renting a helium tank and providing balloons for your younger guests. The kids will be entertained, and you’ll save yourself from being out of breath all afternoon. Chances are you know what that next once-in-a-lifetime event in your family is. The only question is, how will you celebrate it? Consult your local rental facility or visit RentalHQ. com for more ideas. You’ll quickly learn that the only limit to planning your next party is your imagination.

Do It Yourself Kids’ Room Makeovers Once school lets out, it’s a great time to make updates to kids’ rooms. Not only does it let children personalize their own space with decor that reflects their growing personality, it’s a great way to keep them busy with all that extra time to burn. Craft projects are a great way to pass time and let kids practice some of the lessons they left behind at school, without even realizing that’s what they’re doing. Crafting is about more than art and creativity, after all. Measuring and planning for certain projects puts math skills to the test, too. Let kids stretch their imagination with projects centered on a fresh, bright color palette that projects the excitement of youth and celebration. Creative projects, such as these fun and functional storage crates and wall art from the crafting experts at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, give your child’s room an instant burst of energy. You can further embellish the room’s decor with more kid-friendly projects, such as painting unfinished wood frames in coordinating colors

to display photos, awards and other prized items. Or decorate a paper mache letter to personalize the space. For more kid’s room craft ideas, visit www.joann.com. Spring has sprung: tips for getting outside to play After being cooped up during winter, families are eager for warmer weather so they can get outside and play. Research shows that play is an important part of children’s physical, emotional and intellectual development. With spring upon us, now is a great time to make play and outside activity part of your family’s regular routine. Here are some ideas: * Remember, every little bit helps Active play is an important part of keeping families happy and healthy. In fact, childhood obesity increases 29 percent in neighborhoods without a park or playground, according to KaBOOM!, a national non-profit dedicated to ensuring that all children get the balance of active play they need. Instead of driving to your local playground or park, walk or bike, to get in an extra dose of activity. Every little bit helps in keeping your kids growing up strong - physically, emotionally and intellectually. * Keep imagination at the forefront Kids can do anything they put their minds to, and they can keep themselves busy for hours with just

their imaginations. Bring that power to your next outdoor adventure by creating a make-believe obstacle course based on their favorite book or movie at your local play area. Get other kids involved and become the MVP of playtime. * Pledge to be active Staying active on a consistent basis is key to achieving a balanced lifestyle. Let’s Play, a community partnership led by Dr Pepper Snapple Group to get kids and families active, provides a host of tools, places and inspiration to make play a daily priority. Visit www.LetsPlay.com for a wealth of ideas to incorporate play into your day, and take the Let’s Play Pledge to devote additional playtime each week to your family’s routine. * It’s all about balance Playtime takes a lot of energy, so make sure your kids are armed with healthy and nutritious nibbles to replenish their growing minds and bodies. Fruits, veggies, applesauce, whole grains and snack-size cheese are great after-play snacks. Make sure kids are also staying hydrated to keep their energy levels up throughout the day.

Add your health to your spring cleaning to-do list Spring is a season for dusting, washing and polishing the home, cleaning up the yard of any winter debris and even cleaning the storage on the computer or laptop. Spring also should be a time to clean up your health - adding small habits to your lifestyle that can result in big changes to your well-being. From making simple changes to your oral care routine to finding a way to make exercise fun, the following small lifestyle changes are courtesy of Dr. Natalie Strand, the director of integrative medicine at Freedom Pain Hospital in Scottsdale, Ariz. She has worked closely with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, American Diabetes Association and dLife to promote exercise and healthy living among people living with diabetes. * Relax, don’t just rest - Stress is a huge contributor to poor health, but many people don’t know how to manage it. People often mistake resting for relaxing, but it’s not the same. Learn some stress-reducing techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation or meditation. * Spruce up your mouth health - You’re already brushing your teeth twice a day, so make the switch to using oral care products that do more than just protect, but can actually help improve the health of your mouth. The Colgate Total regimen consists of brushing with the Colgate 360° Total Advanced FlossTip Toothbrush using Colgate Total Advanced Toothpaste. Follow with

Colgate Total Advanced Pro-Shield Mouthwash. In just two weeks, this regimen is proven to eliminate 15 times more bacteria than a non-bacterial control regimen, fights germs, fortifies enamel, and improves gum health. It’s a simple change with a powerful impact. * Make exercise fun - Spring is the perfect time of year to combine exercise with social activities. Be creative to get endorphins pumping

and think of things to do with friends such as taking a salsa class, archery lessons, or an evening walk around the neighborhood. * Get a spring tune-up - Doctor’s appointments are important, but often pushed to the wayside. Make a list and schedule all your appointments at once: yearly checkups, dental exams and cleanings, eye exams, etc. * Get seasonal - Check out your

local farmers market. Buy seasonal foods and try to incorporate them in your meals every day. Seasonal produce is more flavorful and densely packed with nutrients. With these small changes to your lifestyle, you can easily upgrade your health for a better you. For more information on ways to spring clean your health and the Colgate Total regimen, visit www. ColgateTotal.com.

Create an outdoor space that ‘ wows’

Whether you own a cozy cottage or mega mansion, as a homeowner, you likely embrace the outdoor living trend. But when you look at your deck or patio, does it leave something to be desired? By taking a do-it-yourself (DIY) approach, you can affordably create outdoor spaces that enhance the style and functionality of your home, plus add to the overall value of the property. Here are a few of the leading trends that the DIY homeowner can use to cost-effectively create an outdoor space that “wows:” Rent rather than buy Upgrading or adding a deck or patio can feel overwhelming unless you have the right equipment to do the job. Renting what you need saves money, plus helps you maximize your time so you can enjoy your new outdoor space sooner. From power washers and saws for cleaning and cutting, to utility loaders and tampers for digging and compacting base materials, you’ll find everything you need at your local American Rental Association member rental store. Visit www.RentalHQ.com for locations near you. Not sure what you need? The pros at the shop are specially trained and can help you choose the best time-saving tools for your project. Use pavers for patios Whether you’re looking to refresh your current patio space or are starting from scratch, patios are great ground-level entertainment spaces. More homeowners are opting for pavers to level and define the space, which adds elegant detail, rather than a bland concrete slab. Find pavers in varying shapes, sizes and colors at your local home improvement store. Remember, by digging and installing a base layer, your pavers are less likely to shift over time. Dig down and

compact base material with a rented plate compactor or a tamper before laying the pavers in the desired pattern. Define your deck If you’re adding a new deck, composite decking material is the way to go. While it costs a bit more than lumber, it lasts longer and is virtually maintenance-free, which will save you time and money in the long run. It’s just as easy to work with as wood and can be cut and assembled in a similar manner. If you simply want to refresh an existing wood deck, rent a power washer to quickly clean off dirt, grime and paint chips. Replace gray and tan paint with deep brown hues, which adds a subtle upscale appearance. Modern exterior paint lasts years and some options even fill cracks in wood, so look for a brand

that best suits your needs. Go native with greenery Adding plants to your outdoor space helps the area feel cohesive with nature. Not sure what to add? Whether for pots, containers or the surrounding landscaping, consider native lawn and plant materials. Not only will they look great and add color and depth to your outdoor space, but they are typically lower maintenance and many require less water. Explore options at your local garden center or state extension service’s website. Create an outdoor kitchen Homeowners want to enjoy more time outside and that means cooking and dining al fresco. While a basic barbecue grill will do, outdoor kitchens are in high demand. Building your own outdoor kitchen space is simple. Install countertops surrounding your

grill and consider incorporating features like a small fridge, gas burners for side items, smokers or built-in storage spaces for spices and cooking tools. Stainless steel continues to be the go-to material for outdoor kitchen features, blending modern style with the organic look of Mother Nature. Light the night The right lighting can take a good outdoor space and make it great. Solar lighting is trending for outdoor spaces, and this eco-friendly option is also affordable. Light pathways with solar landscape lighting - eliminating the need for electrical cords. Jazz up deck posts with post caps that provide a gentle glow. Finally, a string or two of white garden lights adds a twinkle to the beautiful ambiance of a summer evening.
