Mother’s Day Relaxation Gifts Because Even Mother’s Need to Relax from Time to Time By Amy Brantley Relaxation, it’s not really a word you associate with mothers, is it? It’s time that we change that. This year give your mother a gift that will allow her to relax. Mother’s Day Relaxation Gifts #1: Massage Gift Certificate Mother’s Day is a time for moms to be treated like royalty. One way you can make sure your mother gets treated like royalty is to send her to a spa to get a massage. This is a gift she will love, especially after a hard week of work. Mother’s Day Relaxation Gifts #2: Sleep Mask Sleeping in is a treat that mother’s very rarely get to enjoy. Even when she does get to sleep in, her sleep is usually disrupted by the sun. A wonderful way to avoid this dilemma is to buy her a sleep mask. Then she will be able to sleep in and get that well deserved rest. Mother’s Day Relaxation Gifts #3: Neck Pillow Laying down for a quick nap is a wonderful way to relax, but grabbing
a quick nap on the couch isn’t always comfortable. That’s why this relaxation gift is perfect for your mom. Now it doesn’t matter where she grabs that quick nap as long as she has this gift nearby. Mother’s Day Relaxation Gifts #4: Scented Candles Relaxation is appealing to all the senses, even the sense of smell. I highly suggest getting aromatherapy candles that claim to have relaxing or stress relieving scents. Your mother will love this gift. Even when she’s folding laundry, she can be relaxing. Mother’s Day Relaxation Gifts #5: Relaxing CD A CD that has classical music on it is very relaxing, but a CD that has the sounds of waterfalls, birds, etc is relaxing as well. These CDs are wonderful to play, in the background, while grabbing that quick nap. Mother’s Day Relaxation Gifts #6: Foot Spa This gift is relaxation at it’s finest. Your mother will love getting this gift on Mother’s Day. She can sit and watch TV or even read a book while

getting a wonderful foot massage. You could even include lotion and foot scrub so that she can have a mini pedicure at home. Mother’s Day Relaxation Gifts #7: Coupons for Free Dinners If you live nearby, this makes a wonderful Mother’s Day gift. There may be days when your mother doesn’t feel like cooking. When this happens she could call you up and redeem her coupon. If you give these coupons, I highly suggest you have some easy recipes handy so that you can quickly cook up a fast and delicious meal. Mother’s Day Relaxation Gifts #8: Coupons for Free Cleaning I suggest you live nearby before giving this gift on Mother’s Day. The only reason I say this is because if you live far away, and are only home on holidays, you may be stuck with cleaning up after the holidays, which can be horrible. Of course, you should help out at the holidays, but doing it all yourself is just too much. She will love having these coupons around when she’s not feeling to well.

Mother’s Day Proclamation 1870 by Mary Langenback Every one of us has had or has a mother or step mother, at some point in our lives. Mothers day has been celebrated since the early 1900’s. Although my own mother has passed away and I have no children of my own, I still remember her wonderful influence on my life. In celebration of mother’s day I wanted to learn about the history of mother’s day and was surprised to find out that it was originally a woman’s reaction to war. Julia Ward Howe, herself influenced by a one Anna Jarvis who sought to improve sanitation through “Mother’s Work days” in the mid 1850’s. So originally Mother’s day was a day for Mothers to work to improve the lives of those around them. Julia Ward Howe, who lived through the Civil War, saw it as the only way to attempt to stop men from warring with each other. Call it what you will, but her idea was a day of peace. In 1870 she gave a proclamation (Read in full at: http://womenshistory.about.com/ od/howejwriting/a/mothers_day.htm) for women to take counsel together after mourning their dead and to make an attempt to influence those around them, especially their family members, to do all they can to stop war and live at peace with their brothers and sisters around the globe. It was to be remembered that war has many other side effects than just the funerals during and afterward. There was an emotional effect upon women all over the world, crying for their dead, some who had depended upon those men for support, in societies that do not allow women to work. Some of these women with no men to depend on must get married to men
they don’t like, or go into prostitution for survival. The effect also was (and is) economic, men in the 1800’s were the primary bread winners even here in America. Mothers day was first celebrated in a small church, the church in Virginia where Anna Jarvis’ daughter attended. Soon this holiday spread to most of the other 48 continental states. By 1920 it had been celebrated as a national holiday. Slowly, but surely we have stripped it of its original meaning, and have continued to war against ourselves (even our own family members and neighbors) and those of other countries. Even now we are at war in several places in the middle east. Our sons, and husbands, and fathers and lovers have gone off to war and this month we are going to sit at home with those who have stayed behind and celebrate the fact that we, or our relatives and friends, are mothers. Some husbands and families will cry (inside at least), because now there are some mothers at war. We have come a long, long way and it is so very, very sad to say where
we have ended up. We celebrate, adore, worship, and congratulate the mothers, the first time mothers, the oldest mother’s, the youngest mothers and the mothers with the most children. This is not how Mother’s day was supposed to be celebrated. As I said earlier, the original Mothers day was “celebrated” by mothers going out and caring about the health and sanitation of their communities. So, this Mother’s day when you are buying her gifts and taking her out to dinner, take a long, long look at her. Think of what the world would be without our mothers, without our mother’s love and teaching. Think about what femininity meant to society in the past. It meant a caregiver in the family, a teacher, a spiritual leader, one who would (ideally) teach about peace and brotherhood. Then, talk together, after the younger kids have gone to bed, about how mothers, fathers and possibly what your family can do this next year to influence others to stop war. Lets get back to Julia Ward Howe’s original plea: Disarm! Disarm! or even the 1960’s motto: “Make love, not war”!
Some people come into our lives as blessings Some people come into our lives as lessons ~Mother Teresa

Heritage House open this Saturday
The public is invited to embrace our storied history this Saturday, May 12 during a special Heritage House event at Melinda Park. The Heritage House “Open House” is from 1-3 p.m. at 28951 Melinda Road. The Open House will give folks the chance to celebrate the City of Mission Viejo’s 30th anniversary of incorporation by learning about its colorful history – including the first home built in 1966. Along with learning about our roots, guests will enjoy seeing an awardwinning artist share her talents. Joyce Pelaka paints “en plein air” or “in the open,” a term first used by the French impressionists. She frequently travels to capture fresh subject matter while participating in some of the most respected art festivals. Traveling to France gave her an opportunity to paint in the garden of impressionist Claude Monet – an artistic experience of a lifetime. Her oil paintings evoke moods and capture a fleeting moment on canvas. People of all ages are welcome to stop by and share in the history and heritage of our community. Reservations are not necessary and free parking is available. The Heritage House is located on the corner of Melinda Road and Santa Margarita Parkway.

COLORFUL CLASSICS impress the coto visitors
Last Sunday drew curious Coto crowds to the Coto de Caza Sports Park where a remarkable assemblage of elegant automobiles embraced the winding roads of the park’s enchanting architecture. The Coto de Caza News photographers captured the enjoyment of they Coto de Caza residents as the strolled through the collection. A substantial amount of those vehicles were brought by Coto de Caza residents themselves, although some outsiders brought in some additional vehicles. Polished to perfection, these delightful automobiles sparkled in the radiance of an exceptionally nice day in Coto de Caza as a gentle breeze flowed through the canyon to cool an otherwise very warm day. Kids and teens seemed to be enjoying the car show as much as the moms and dads who took time from their morning brunch to tour the colorful assembly line. “We just dropped by to see if we could meet some hot guys,” said a couple of young ladies who said
they were models. “Cool guys always come to car shows, “they giggled. “An amazing group of Porsches’”, said Wayne Edelstein, legendary hair stylist and himself a collector/restorer of Porsche automobiles and a Coto resident. “These are trophy worthy cars,” he said, pointing to one of the automobiles on display. The crowd, which seemed to increase towards lunchtime, was estimated by some as approaching 1,500 visitors showed no signs of slowing down when the Coto de Caza News crew left around 11:30.

local charity event raises $125,000 for Olive Crest
George DeVries, who won the Vince Ferragamo-autographed football, with the Rams star and event MC Vince Ferragamo
Photos by: Katya Williams Olive Crest saluted the “Wearin’ of the Green” at its St. Paddy’s Day Celebration for a sold-out crowd of 435 guests on St. Patrick’s Day at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort in Huntington Beach. The festive affair featured lively music by the Irish band Cillian’s Bridge, Irish dancers, whiskey sampling, silent and live auctions, a sit-down dinner and a Golden Ticket opportunity which offered the winner a choice of a live auction item (buyers were the proud wearers of flashing green blinky rings). Former NFL Rams’ star quarterback and ardent community supporter Vince Ferragamo served as master of ceremonies, with Carrie Brock taking the reins as event chair, assisted by former chairs Lorraine Bader and Lori Feeney. Other committee members included Board of Trustees President Steve Bernardy, Vice President Randy Rider, Lori LaPorte, Shelli Zeller, Gabriella Ayerst, Chris Selzer, and honorary chair Diana Casey. Also Olive Crest board member Jim Woodside with mentor Jessica assisting were Olive Crest Founders Dr. Donald and Lois Verleur, CEO Woodside and CEO Donald Verleur Donald Verleur, Executive Director OC Region Kerri Dunkelberger, and Executive Development Director Tim Bauer. Most important was the testimony of a young lady named Helen Wright, who lauded Olive Crest for helping turn her life around. Olive Crest mentor Jessica Woodside, who committed to being a mentor at last year’s gala, spoke glowingly about how her mentee and foster teen Lillie has blessed her life. Olive Crest recognized Applied Medical with its “Champion for the Children Award.” The company has given $99,114 in donations since 2011 to support the children and families of the nonprofit. Applied Medical’s Director of Community Relations, Jenna Hilal, accepted the award. Olive Crest’s volunteer group, Town Gown & Apron, was honored for its more than 25 years of support, contributing nearly $2 million to support Olive Crest’s children. The award was presented to the group’s leader, Diana Casey, who is credited as the backbone and inspirational leader of the group. Dr. David and Diana Casey, Carrie Brock and her husband honoree for her leadership with the The Golden Ticket opportunity drew lots of buyers, as the winner was John Brock Town Gown & Apron support group able to choose one of several live auction items - a Cabo trip, a phenomenal sports package, Del Mar Turf Club, and an Anaheim Angels Club Level Suite opportunity for 12 guests - supporter Lauren Post chose the Angels! Also popular was the $100 opportunity to win an autographed football from Super Bowl XIV by Rams great, Vince Ferragamo. A very happy George DeVries was the winner. Together with auctions, raffle opportunities, underwriting and the “Bid from the Heart” offer, $125,000 in net proceeds was realized for the support of children and families through Olive Crest programs. Since 1973, Olive Crest has transformed the lives of more than 70,000 abused, neglected, and at-risk children and their families. The nonprofit works tirelessly to meet the individual needs of kids in crisis by providing safe homes, counseling and education for both youth and parents. The many innovative programs offered reflect its conviction that strengthening the family Olive Crest OC Executive Director Kerri Dunkelberger with Board of is one of the most powerful ways to help heal children. www.OliveCrest.org Trustees President Steve Bernardy The Coto de Caza News

The benefits of probiotics for babies With the increasing number of products in the marketplace containing probiotics, many new parents might be wondering if their babies could benefit from probiotics. To answer that question, it is important to understand the role of the body’s microbiota, the living organisms that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract. Humans have trillions of bacteria good, bad, and neutral - living in their gastrointestinal systems. Research shows that in the same way harmful bacteria in the gastrointestinal system can attack the body, good bacteria, also known as probiotics, can help support it. This relationship leads to a balanced and well-functioning gastrointestinal system. For babies, ingesting probiotics may help support the developing digestive tract and immune system. Breastfed babies naturally get probiotics, as research has demonstrated that breastmilk contains probiotics. Mothers unable to breastfeed, or those who choose to offer formula, still have options to ensure their baby is building up adequate amounts of this good bacteria by feeding their baby an infant formula with probiotics. Gerber(R) Good Start(R) infant formula is the only formula line with probiotics available in all milk-based powders. While there are thousands of different probiotic strains, Gerber
selected probiotics based on the available research and benefit for specific infant needs. For example, Gerber(R) Good Start(R) Gentle formula is a routine formula for healthy-term infants that uses Bifidobacterium lactis (B. lactis) because this probiotic has been shown to help support a healthy immune system and is similar to probiotics naturally found
in breastmilk. Gerber(R) Good Start(R) Soothe formula is for babies experiencing colic, excessive crying and fussiness, so it features the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri). Studies using this probiotic have shown that it reduces the amount of time colicky infants may cry. Both L. reuteri and B. lactis are recognized as safe for use in infant
formula by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Keep in mind, all infant formulas are carefully regulated by the FDA. Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life offers the ideal nutrition for babies, but whatever leads parents to use infant formula, they now have an option that contains important good bacteria similar to those found in breastmilk. - (BPT)
Tips to avoid distracted driving The pace of business never seems to stop, and thanks to the convenience of cell phones, many people work on the go, even while they’re driving. Yet cell phone use is one of the most common type of distracted driving, and it claims thousands of lives and causes thousands more injuries every year. More than a quarter of all car crashes involve cell phone use, both hand sets and hands-free, the National Safety Council (NSC) reports. In 13 percent of fatal crashes, the drivers were using cellphones, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says. The actual number of cell phone-related accidents is likely much higher, since many states don’t yet compile and report data on cell phone use following a crash. Employers take up the issue Recognizing the ethical and liability issues that arise when employees drive while distracted, employers across the country have begun implementing distracted driving policies. Typically, these policies prohibit employees from using cellphones while driving on company time. In January 2017, the NSC reported Page 16
that Cargill was the largest privately held company to prohibit the use of mobile devices, including hands-free technology, while an employee is driving on behalf of the company. The ban also covers work related calls while commuting to and from work, even if employees are driving their own vehicles. “There is a time and place for doing business, and it’s not while you’re driving,” says Melanie Burke, director of health and safety at Cargill, a Minnesota-based privately held company with 150,000 employees around the world. Even Cargill’s Chairman and CEO David MacLennan is subject to the ban. In announcing the policy to employees in late 2016, MacLennan noted he was 138 days into cellphone free motoring. “It’s been liberating,” he told employees. NSC data shows about 20 percent of Fortune 500 companies have instituted cell phone bans, and of those, just 1 percent believe the ban affected productivity. Replace risk, keep productivity Taking care of business doesn’t mean you have to risk a crash. Here are six ways to keep up with the pace of business without using your cell

phone in the car: * Use an automated response app to let callers know you’re driving and can’t take their call at the moment. These free apps allow you to personalize the response and set your phone to automatically reply with a text message to incoming calls or texts. * If you’re driving a vehicle outfitted with communication technology, use its “do not disturb” feature to unplug from calls and texts while behind the wheel. * Use shared calendars to block off times when you’ll be on the road and unable to answer a call. The calendar item will help alert coworkers and anyone else connected to your calendar when you’ll be out of touch and when they might be able to reach you again. * Remove temptation. A study by AT&T found 62 percent of drivers keep their phones within reach in the car. Put yours away where you can’t see or reach it. You can place it in your purse, briefcase or messenger bag, and place the bag in the back seat. Further reduce distraction and temptation by turning your device off before stowing it. * If you absolutely must take a call
while on the road, pull over in a safe location. If a call comes in while you’re driving, allow it to go to voicemail until you’re safely pulled over, then return the call. * Be aware of other dangerously distracting behaviors, such as putting on makeup, tying a necktie or eating while driving. Do all your dressing and personal grooming before you leave home, and if you must snack while driving, choose food that is easy to manage, like a granola bar (unwrap it when you’re stopped), rather than something messy like a burger with all the fixings. “Before we had cellphones, if you had to take a business call while on the road, you would pull over and find a pay phone,” says Burke. “Productivity was fine and business got done. When it comes to time behind the wheel, safety is everyone’s most important job.” - (BPT)

The Wings of Freedom Tour Unique Display at the John Wayne Airport / Lyon Air Museum from May 9th to 13th
In honor of our WWII Veterans ~ The Collings Foundation’s Wings of Freedom Tour Brings Extremely Rare Bomber and Fighter Aircraft for Local Living History Display as Part of 110city Nationwide Tour Participating in the Collings Foundation’s WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR, the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress “Nine O Nine” WWII Heavy Bomber, Consolidated B-24 Liberator “Witchcraft” WWII Heavy Bomber and North American B-25 Mitchell and P-51 Mustang fighter, will fly to Lyon Air Museum for a visit from May 9th to 13th. This is a rare opportunity to visit, explore, and learn more about these unique and rare treasures of aviation history. The B-17 is one of only 8 in flying condition in the United States , the B-24J is the sole remaining examples of its type flying in the World. The B-25 is best known for being used in the daring Doolittle raid. The P-51 Mustang was awarded the prestigious Grand Champion for restoration at EAA’s Oshkosh AirVenture. Visitors are invited to explore the aircraft inside and out - $12 for adults, $9 for seniors and veterans, $6 for children ages 5 -17, and free for children
under 5 is requested for access to up-close viewing and tours through the inside of the aircraft and access to Lyon Air Museum. Visitors may also experience the once-in-alifetime opportunity to actually take a 30-minute flight aboard these rare aircraft. Flights on either the B-17 or B-24 are $450 per person. Get some “stick time” in the world’s greatest fighter! P-51 flights are $2,200 for a half hour and $3,200 for a full hour. B-25 flights are $400 per person. For reservations and information on flight experiences call 800-568-8924. The WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR will be on display at Lyon Air Museum in Santa Ana, located at 19300 Ike Jones Road on the west side of John Wayne Airport. The WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR will arrive at Lyon Air Museum at 2:00 PM on May 9th and will be on display until the aircraft departs after 5:00 PM operations on May 13th. Hours of ground tours and display are: 2:00 PM through 5:00 PM on Wednesday, May 9th; 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Thusday, May 9th through Sunday, May 13th. The 30-minute flight experiences are normally scheduled before and after the
ground tour times above. The Collings Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit educational foundation devoted to organizing “living history” events that allows people to learn more about their heritage and history through direct participation. The Nationwide WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR is celebrating its 29th year and visits an average of 110 cities in over 35 states annually. Since its start, tens of millions of people have seen the B-17, B-24, B-25 & P-51 display at locations everywhere. The WINGS OF FREEDOM tour is one of the most extraordinary and unique interactive traveling historical displays of its kind. The WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR travels the nation as a flying tribute to the flight crews who flew them, the ground crews who maintained them, the workers who built them, the soldiers, sailors and airmen they helped protect; and the citizens and families that share the freedom that they helped preserve. The B-17, B-25 & B-24 were the backbone of the American effort during the war from 1942 to 1945 and were famous for their ability to sustain damage and still accomplish the mission.
Despite the risks of anti-aircraft fire, attacking enemy fighters, and the harrowing environment of sub-zero temperatures, many B-17s and B-24s safely brought their crews home. The P-51 Mustang was affectionately known as the bombers “Little Friend” – saving countless crews from attacking axis fighters. After the war, many aircraft were scrapped for their raw aluminum to rebuild a nation in post-war prosperity and therefore very few were spared. The rarity of the B-17, B-25, B-24 & P-51 - and their importance to telling the story of WWII is why the Collings Foundation continues to fly and display the aircraft nationwide. At each location we encourage local veterans and their families to visit and share their experiences and stories with the public. For aviation enthusiasts, the tour provides opportunity for the museum to come to the visitor and not the other way around! Visitors can find out more by visiting our website at www.collingsfoundation. org. For further information e-mail Jade Nguyen at JadeNguyen@ lyonairmuseum.org or call 714-2104585

In 1870 she gave a proclamation (Read in full at: http://womenshistory.about.com/ od/howejwriting/a/mothers_day.htm) for women to take counsel together after mourning their dead and to make an attempt to influence those around them, especially their family members, to do all they can to stop war and live at peace with their
brothers and sisters around the globe. It was to be remembered that war has many other side effects than just the funerals during and afterward. There was an emotional effect upon women all over the world, crying for their dead, some who had depended upon those men for support, in societies that do not allow women to work. Some of these women with no men to depend on must get married to men they don’t like, or go into prostitution for survival. Our sons, and husbands, and fathers and lovers have gone off to war and this month we are going to sit at home with those who have stayed behind and celebrate the fact that we, or our relatives and friends,
are mothers. Some husbands and families will cry (inside at least), because now there are some mothers at war. We have come a long, long way and it is so very, very sad to say where we have ended up. So, this Mother’s day when you
are buying her gifts and taking her out to dinner, take a long, long look at her.
The secret to Mother’s Day gifting success: Give time, not stuff
She nursed you through countless cases of childhood sniffles, taught you to tie your shoes and make a mean omelet, and she’s still your go-to source for good advice and your favorite homebaked cookies. Are you really going to just give Mom a pair of socks and some flowers for Mother’s Day? You can do better than that. In the tradition of a current pop-culture meme, here’s a “give this, not that” list of Mother’s Day ideas: Give: Your time. Last year, 44 percent of mothers surveyed by online deal site PriceGrabber said they wanted quality time with their family for Mother’s Day. Whether your family includes adult children who live and work far from their childhood home (and Mom) or a busy family with young children, it can be hard to find time to spend with each other on a regular basis. On Mother’s Day, make a point of devoting the day to Mom. Whatever you choose to do together - dine out, visit a botanical garden or just hang out at home - you’ll be giving her the gift she wants most: time with you. Don’t give: Stuff. There’s a difference between a thoughtful gift that has meaning to the recipient, and something clearly bought out of desperation just so the giver has something to hand over on Mother’s Day. Moms know the difference. Things like cowboy boots, sunglasses and even designer purses were among the items mothers said they didn’t want in a survey by Ebates. Don’t wait until the last minute to buy something she may not want. Put some thought into the gift a week or two before the big day so you can be sure you’re giving her something she really wants, like a piece of unique jewelry, her favorite bath products, or an attractive scarf.
Give: A great meal out. It’s easy to understand why dining out was on the list of most-wanted gifts for mothers in every geographic area surveyed by Ebates. What could make Mom happier than enjoying a great meal with her family? Not having to cook it herself or clean up afterward! Taking Mom out for meal is a time-honored Mother’s Day tradition and restaurants can be busy on the first Sunday of May. In fact, Chris Ciavarra, senior vice president of marketing for Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, reports that Mother’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year for their restaurant locations across the country. When choosing a place to take Mom, look for a place that will please her palate with familiar flavors, good food and the kind of warm, comforting ambience she creates in her own dining room or kitchen. Family-style restaurants like Cracker Barrel are a good choice for Mother’s Day because there’s something on the menu for everyone. Plus, when Mom’s done with her meal, she can pick out the perfect gift from the store’s collection of nostalgic items.
Don’t give: Practical kitchen items. No matter how much Mom says she wants a new electric can opener or how much she needs a new set of pots and pans, don’t give these items on Mother’s Day. Moms are more than just the sum of the time they spend in the kitchen. If she really needs and wants those things, why not give them to her at some other time of year, for no other reason than she’s a great mother? Or, if you must give something kitchen-related for Mother’s Day, consider something that’s pretty and fun, too, like decorative serve ware. Buy from a store that offers free gift wrapping services - like Cracker Barrel and it’s even easier to give a good-looking gift. Give: Gift cards. A gift card to her favorite store was another popular selection of moms surveyed by Ebates. But don’t think giving her a gift card is all you have to do. Research to find just the right card for her, and then offer to accompany her on a shopping excursion to her favorite store. That way, you’ll be giving her two things she wants most - a gift card and time spent with you. Don’t give: Technology. Do you really want to give Mom a smartphone that will be obsolete by next Mother’s Day? Or a tablet so complicated she’ll never figure out how to use it on her own? If your mother’s digitally inclined, chances are she already has the tech she needs and wants. And if she doesn’t, trying to choose it for her can be like trying to pick a pet for someone else - never a good idea. Instead, keep gift items simple, personal and nostalgic. 7 steps to secure your home while you’re on vacation Warmer temperatures, budding trees and blooming flowers are all lovely parts of spring, but what you really look forward to is the start of vacation planning season! Deciding where to go and what to see, making arrangements and planning your wardrobe are all exciting aspects of summer vacation planning. But before you pack up to leave on your getaway, be sure to take care of the most important asset you’ll be leaving at home - your home itself. “Before going away on vacation, homeowners do a lot of things to prepare for the security and safety of their home while away, including stopping the mail, powering down electronics and turning off water and gas,” says Emily Lewicki, brand manager with Coleman Heating and Air Conditioning. “Additionally, it is important to keep in mind that a home’s temperature needs to be monitored, which can easily be done by using a programmable thermostat.” While you’re savoring the fun of your vacation planning, here are seven steps you also should take to prepare your home to remain secure while you’re away:
1. Stop the mail. Home safety experts agree: a stuffed mailbox is a sign of an empty home. The United States Postal Service allows you to request a vacation hold on your mail up to 30 days before your departure date. Go to holdmail.usps.com to see if this service is available in your area. You should also put newspaper and package delivery on hold, too, as uncollected newspapers or parcels in front of your house could also alert others that you’re not home. 2. Turn off water and gas. If a water or gas leak occurs while you’re not there to address it, the emergency could cause significant damage to your home. You can reduce risks by turning off water flow to appliances like the clothes washer. To conserve energy and money, you can also turn off the gas flow to your water heater. 3. Adjust the thermostat. You don’t need to spend money to heat or cool your home to a comfortable level when you’re not there to enjoy it. Turn down the thermostat, but don’t turn your HVAC system completely off. Extreme temperatures can harm your home and its contents. A programmable thermostat can take care of temperature adjustments
for you while you’re away. If you don’t already have a programmable thermostat, consider installing a model like Coleman’s Hx(TM) thermostat. The touch-screen interface makes it easy to program the system, plus a free downloadable app allows you to control the thermostat from your smartphone, no matter where you travel. Just be sure to leave your internet connection active at home so your thermostat can communicate with the app while you’re away. 4. Put lights on timers or sensors. A well-lit home looks lived in and is less appealing to burglars. Put outside lights on sensors so they’ll turn on when the sun goes down. Use timers to turn interior lights on and off at appropriate times. 5. Prep your kitchen. Go through the refrigerator and pantry and throw away any food that could go bad while you’re away. No one wants to come home to smelly, spoiled food. Empty the trash and arrange for a neighbor to put the trash at the curb on your scheduled pickup day. Unplug all small appliances like the coffee maker, toaster ovens, food processors, etc. 6. Power down electronic devices.
Items like computers, TVs and phone chargers all draw power while plugged in, even if they’re not switched on. Turn off and unplug electronic devices to reduce power usage in the house and protect electronics from power surges while you’re away. 7. Secure the garage. This is especially important if your home has an attached garage with direct access into your home. Most garage doors have a simple bolt lock that can be engaged from inside to prevent the door from being raised. Remember to also lock the door from the garage into your house. Everyone looks forward to vacation. With some simple prep, you can ensure your home stays secure while you’re away. C o o k Up a M o t h e r ’ s D a y t o R e m e mb e r Mother’s Day is a time for wining, dining and celebrating moms everywhere. Make this Mother’s Day one to remember by hosting a special brunch get-together for the special ladies in your life. Although quality time together is the true purpose of the day, you can add some special touches to help create a one-of-a-kind brunch to share old memories while you make new ones. Plan your tablescape. Colorful, fragrant flowers and luxurious linens make your everyday table shine. Use plates in complementing shades and sparkling glassware for an elegant touch. If you have room, add personal touches to the centerpiece, such as mementoes from shared trips or small picture frames with pictures of the two of you through the years. Prepare a sophisticated menu. Give a nod to the importance of the

day with dishes that are a step above standard brunch fare. A richly flavored entree such as this Spring Vegetable and Chevre Tart looks elegant but is surprisingly easy to make. For a cohesive spread, remember to give the basics a boost, too, such as a homemade flavored whipped butter. Offer a gift with meaning. To truly elevate the occasion, serve (or gift) your mom with a deliciously meaningful wine, such as Cambria Benchbreak Chardonnay or Pinot Noir from the famed Santa Maria bench in Santa Barbara County. Cambria is a family-owned winery that believes in honoring women across the United States and globally. Each year, the winery gives $100,000 to women making a difference in their communities through their Seeds of Empowerment program. 1 egg white, beaten until slightly foamy Heat oven to 350 F. On well-greased baking sheet, arrange one puff pastry sheet. Crumble chevre across pastry. Lay tomato slices then green beans, zucchini and beets over chevre, leaving a 1-inch border around all edges. Crumble second half of chevre on top. Lightly wet edges of pastry. Slice four 1-inch strips of second sheet of pastry and lay over edges of bottom sheet. (Optional: create basketweave pattern with remaining pastry dough). Brush pastry with egg white and bake until pastry is deep golden brown, about 35 minutes. Serve immediately. Pinot Noir Rosemary Butter Recipe courtesy of Erin Kennedy of My Thirty Spot Blog 1 cup salted homemade whipped butter (recipe below) 3/4 cup Cambria Benchbreak Pinot Noir 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary Fill shallow saucepan with wine and simmer until consistency becomes syrupy (reducing to about 1/8 cup). Let syrup cool completely. Add syrup and rosemary to whipped butter and mix. Serve chilled. Homemade Whipped Butter
1/2 quart heavy cream 1/2 teaspoon salt (up to 3/4 teaspoon, to taste) In food processor, mix butter until cream turns to consistency of cottage cheese and starts to separate from buttermilk, about 3-5 minutes of constant mixing. Strain butter from buttermilk. Use wooden spoon to knead butter in water (just like dough) to remove all remaining buttermilk. Drain and repeat until water is clear. Remaining whipped butter is ready to serve or for adding flavoring ingredients.

Control mobile data costs by connecting to Wi-Fi at home American’s use of computers has shifted dramatically in the last five years. In the past, desktop computers were the main tools for accessing the Internet and communicating with others. Today, mobile devices like smartphones and tablets are taking over. The use of mobile devices has skyrocketed, with nearly 7 out of 10 U.S. adults (68 percent) having a smartphone, up from 35 percent in 2011, according to the Pew Research Center. Tablet computer ownership is growing too, with 45 percent of adults owning this type of mobile device. Mobile devices are popular because they provide instant access to virtually anything a person wants to do. From watching videos to online shopping and interacting on social media, mobile makes any task easy - and it’s all within an arm’s reach. Along with this move to mobile devices comes a sharp increase in mobile data usage. Many Americans are quickly learning how expensive data on mobile devices can be. One easy way to control mobile data costs is to connect mobile devices to your Wi-Fi network at home. Simply go into your devices’ settings, select Wi-Fi and make your home connection your default option. Most mobile devices will then automatically connect to your Wi-
Fi when at home and reduce your mobile data consumption. This is a useful technique, but what if you live in one of the 18 million households across the United States that does not have access to “traditional” wired Internet or are stuck with a slow connection? The best solution for these households is satellite Internet. Hughes, the inventor of satellite Internet, has recently announced their new HughesNet Gen5 service.
HughesNet Gen5 is the first and only U.S. satellite Internet service to offer Federal Communications Commission (FCC) defined broadband speeds - 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload from coast to coast. HughesNet Gen5 high-speed satellite Internet even comes with built-in Wi-Fi making it easy to connect wireless devices at home. For these 18 million households, HughesNet Gen5 is a major breakthrough, providing speeds much

The millennial mom-to-be uses an app to track her fertility and pregnancy progress, pins nursery ideas on Pinterest and researches baby gear on YouTube. She reads online advice on everything from what to eat (or not), to when to talk to a doctor about prescription prenatal vitamins and what to do with the placenta after delivering. Never without a smartphone in hand, armed with an app for everything, always connected or “on,” millennials were born in an era of emerging technology between 1980 and 1995, and have grown up in an ever-increasing digitally-enhanced environment. Access to technology and social media has defined every aspect of her life, including the
expectant millennial’s approach to pregnancy. It’s a drastically different world than when her own mother was pregnant. But what does this over-abundance of connectivity and information mean for the digital-savvy millennial momto-be? Per a recent poll, for nearly 60 percent it means there is too much conflicting advice on tips for a healthy pregnancy. In the poll conducted by Exeltis, the company that produces the number one doctor recommended prescription prenatal vitamin, Vitafol, 500 millennials and 500 baby boomers were asked to reveal details on their approach to pregnancy. While sifting through all the information available today was overwhelming to expectant millennials, only 36.2 percent of baby
boomer moms, whose pregnancies were “pre-Google” and social media, felt this way. In addition, in our constantlyconnected world it’s common for people to feel license to dispense unsolicited advice to expectant moms. Twice as many millennial moms report they received advice while they were pregnant that they disregarded or didn’t agree with as compared to baby boomer moms. That’s why it’s no surprise that with so much (often conflicting) soughtout and unsolicited information and advice, 51.8 percent of millennials said they had a hard time deciding which pregnancy advice to believe. “We have so much more information than they did years ago,” said one millennial in the study. “I feel like millennial moms have a lot more pressure placed on them to do everything ‘right.’” Thus, despite the advances in technology that make their pregnancies different (or perhaps, more likely, because of it), millennial moms are turning to their own mothers for advice, even more than their mothers turned to the generation before them. Millennials are using the “Grandma Filter” to essentially qualify and validate information that they are receiving from other sources. In fact, when it comes to preparing for parenting, millennials turn to their mother/mother figure more than any
faster than the slow DSL that many of these consumers are currently using. In addition to fast speeds and builtin Wi-Fi, HughesNet Gen5 also comes with generous, affordable service plans. It is no longer necessary to rely on mobile data at home. Get the most out of your devices with a reliable, high-speed connection. other resource on a variety of topics. The “Grandma Filter” is number one when it comes to emotional/family concerns, relationship advice and determining what supplies she will need to register for. And, millennial moms also turn to their mother nearly three times more often than baby boomer moms would have regarding financial concerns in preparing for a new baby. Even though she has so many more resources at her disposal, and she still goes to her doctor, spouse/ significant other and friends and other family members on many matters, the millennial’s increased reliance on her own mother has changed significantly over the years. Still, there are some elements of pregnancy that have remained unchanged. More than half of all millennial and baby boomer mothers polled prepared for pregnancy by taking a childbirth class. More than 97 percent of millennial moms and 92 percent of boomer moms took prenatal vitamins. In addition, 80 percent of both groups recognize prescription prenatal vitamins are the right choice for any pregnant mother. Which all indicates that regardless of when they are pregnant, moms ultimately want what is best for her baby, but deciding what that is might best be determined with a slight tweak to the adage. In fact, “Mama’s MAMA knows best.” - (BPT)

Time-saving tips so parents can have a little break
You wake up before the sun rises to shower and get ready for the day. Soon you hear the patter of tiny feet upstairs. You get breakfast ready for your little ones and then get them dressed. Between packing bags and preparing lunches, you barely have time to grab breakfast for yourself. You rush out the door just in time to make it to work before that big meeting starts. And all this happens before 8 a.m. Being a parent means juggling not just your own schedule, but those of your children as well. Nearly two in three moms have never taken a day completely for themselves, according to a new survey conducted by Luvs and Wakefield Research. It’s no surprise most parents long for a little breathing room to relax. Fortunately, with these five tips and tricks, you can ease your schedule and save time throughout the day. Use that extra time for something you enjoy, whether it’s watching your favorite TV show, going for a run or sipping a cup of tea while star gazing. Make nap time all about you
If you have small kids, you probably use the few hours they nap to do laundry, clean the house or catch up on emails. Instead, once or twice a week, use the break to do something just for you. Read a book, catch up on the DVR or even step into the shower! In fact, the Luvs survey found that a quarter of moms would simply value an uninterrupted shower versus going to the spa. Simplify diapering Changing diapers throughout the day adds up fast in time and money. Parents can look to avoid leaks while keeping little ones comfortable by using Luvs which are extra absorbent and have large stretch tabs for easy fastening. Visit www.luvsdiapers. com to learn more about Luvs Ultra Leakguards with NightLock Plus. Ready the night before Mornings are hectic for families, and a bad one can really set the tone for the entire day. Save time and eliminate stress by doing as much as possible the night before. Select clothes for kids and yourself, prepare lunches, pack bags and bathe in the
evening. When the alarm goes off, you will be 75 percent ready to go. Cook double batches When you cook twice as much, you cover two meals in the time it takes to make just one. Double the casserole for tonight and freeze half for next week. Cook 2 pounds of chicken so you have lunch for tomorrow in addition to dinner. Double the soup and freeze in individual containers so both you and your partner have
an easy meal you can grab and go. Play date exchange Spearhead a babysitting exchange between you and your parent friends. Offer to bring a few extra kids to the park to give another parent a muchneeded break. Then next week, swap play date duties so you can enjoy a few hours alone. Your kids will love having friends along, while you get precious “me time.” It’s a win-win for everyone. - (BPT)
5 Tips for Transitioning Back to Work After a Baby For many moms, heading back to work after maternity leave is something that has always been a part of the plan, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. This leads to concern about not having enough time to bond with baby, stress about pumping at work and maintaining your milk supply. While you may be worrying about being separated from baby for an extended period and interrupting your carefully crafted breastfeeding schedule, there are ways to help make the transition back to work easier for you and your little one. Ease Into the New Routine If possible, schedule your return date for the middle of a week rather than a Monday. Getting thrown into a long work week will not only be exhausting, but emotionally draining as well. By taking only a few days away from baby at the beginning, you can slowly ease back into work and make the return more manageable. Purchase Pumping Essentials While pumping at work can be challenging, having the right accessories can make it easier and even extend the time you spend pumping and breastfeeding. Although many moms returning to work stress about finding a private location to pump and the time to do it, a discreet pumping accessory, such as NUK Simply Natural Freemie Collection Page 28
Cups, allows you to pump handsfree with your shirt on – even in your cubicle. Compatible with leading double electric breast pumps, you can pump on your own terms. The collection cups also help easily transfer milk into storage containers or storage bags to bring home. A supply of absorbent nursing pads is also a handy essential to keep with your breast pump to help you stay dry throughout the day. Take Your Lunch Break While getting back into your work routine may keep you busy, it’s important to still make time for a lunch break. A return to work often means a change in your normal habits with more eating on the go, which can lead to skipped meals or not enough hydration. A quick lunch break helps create time for proper nutrients so you can maintain energy to keep up with the demands of work and parenting. Maintain the Bond Feeding is a special time and it can be just as hard on your little one when the schedule changes. One way to help ease the feeding transition is to use products that provide a more natural feeding experience, like NUK Simply Natural Bottles. The bottles are modeled after the shape of breasts, with up to nine nipple holes, and make for a natural transition between breast and bottle. As a

result, baby can maintain a close-tomom feel, even while you are apart. Try introducing more family members or friends to giving baby a bottle about a month before going back to work so you feel confident that the process is going smoothly before your official return date. Keep the Connection One of the hardest parts about returning to work is leaving your baby, and that’s expected. Don’t be shy
about asking your caregiver to send updates once or twice a day with texts and pictures for peace of mind. One way to help ease the stress of being back at work is to visually see that your baby is doing well with the new routine. Working mothers have a handful of challenges to face, but planning ahead and following these tips can help ensure the transition is as smooth as possible.

On April 14th, the Orange County Clerk-Recorder Department hosted its 2nd Annual Passport Day at the Old County Courthouse in Santa Ana. During this event, the department
accepted 179 passport applications and took 114 passport photos. This represents a 113% in-crease in the number of passport applications accepted and an 87% increase in the number of passport photos taken during the depart-ment’s 1st Annual Passport Day last year. The turnout was great and most notably lots of families with children took advantage of this year’s Passport Day. Families and individuals were lining up for the event an hour ahead of opening time. Holding the event on a Saturday makes the passport applications process easier for parents, as both parents must be present to obtain a passport for children younger than 16. “It gives me great pleasure to personally see all the families who turned out for this event,” ClerkRecorder Hugh Nguyen said. “We are here to make it easier for these families and individuals to obtain the services that they need and I really appreciate the turnout and our staff for coming on a Saturday and doing a great job.” The department held its 1st Annual Passport Day last year at the Old County Courthouse. The Arbor Day Foundation is offering a handy tree-care booklet designed to help people plant and care for trees. Anyone can receive Conservation Trees, a user-friendly booklet featuring illustrations, colorful photos, and easily understood descriptions, by making a $3 donation to the Foundation this month. “Conservation Trees is an ideal resource for tree planters,” said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Taking care of existing trees is just as critical as planting new ones, and proper care ensures communities are able to fully enjoy the diverse benefits of urban forestry.” The booklet provides details about the right way to plant and prune trees.
It also includes tips on using shade trees and windbreaks to save on energy costs, attract songbirds, and create a living snow fence. To receive the Conservation Trees booklet, send a $3 check along with your name and address to Conservation Trees, Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410, or order online at arborday.org/conservationtrees. About the Arbor Day Foundation Founded in 1972, the Arbor Day Foundation has grown to become the largest nonprofit membership organization dedicated to planting trees, with more than 1 million members, supporters, and valued partners. More information is available at arborday.org.
