LADERA SPORTS CENTER TO HOST L.A. CLIPPERS YOUTH HOOPS CAMPS Orange County Basketball Players Ages Six to 14 Invited to Train with Former Pro Players August 8 to 12 Ladera Sports Center is pleased to announce the L.A. Clippers will host Youth Hoops camps for basketball players ages six to 14 from August 8 through 12 at the $35 million solarpowered multi-use facility, currently under construction in Ladera Ranch, Calif. “The L.A. Clippers are extremely excited about partnering with the most advanced facility in Southern California to host our youth basketball summer camp,” said Maurice Baker, supervisor of youth basketball programs for the L.A. Clippers. “Working with Ladera Sports Center is the best opportunity to show the people of Orange County our respect for their beautiful community.” Each camper will receive exclusive L.A. Clippers Youth Hoops gear, including a reversible jersey, drawstring backpack, replica Spalding basketball, baller band and $25 ticket credit to see the Clippers live at select 2016-17 home games. The camp will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and costs $240 per camper. “This camp is just one of many wonderful opportunities we’re now able to offer athletes of all ages in Orange County,” said H. Michael Schwartz, CEO of SmartStop Asset Management, Inc., who designed,
financed and is building the facility. “We will be offering many special programs and events of this caliber in the years to come.” Ladera Sports Center, which is being built on approximately four acres on Terrace Road near the intersection of Crown Valley Parkway and Antonio Parkway in Southern California’s Ladera Ranch, is nearly 60 percent complete and will hold a grand opening celebration on August 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Several South Orange County clubs—
including Team Nikos Basketball Academy, Ladera Ranch National Junior Basketball, the San Clemente Volleyball Club, Little Rookies Youth Sports and Ladera Ranch Strength and Conditioning—have already signed on. “We’re excited to have the L.A. Clippers come down to our facility,” said Steve Williams, CEO of Ladera Sports Center. “Former L.A. Clippers and ambassador Lamond Murray will be leading the camp and over 100 players have already signed up!”
Ladera Sports Center will feature a 60,000-square-foot gymnasium with 48,750 square feet of court spaces— eight state-of-the-art basketball and volleyball courts—that have airconditioning, noise decibel reduction systems, superior wood flooring and ceiling-mounted volleyball nets with ample spectator seats per court. Busted: The top 4 most common pet myths It’s no secret that Americans love their pets. When it comes to U.S. pet ownership, 39 percent of households own at least one dog, and 33 percent own at least one cat, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Furry family members bring joy and excitement to a household, and providing the best care possible helps ensure pets have a long, healthy life. Unfortunately, with so much information available, it’s easy to become confused about what’s really best for them. To cut through the clutter, Dr. Ashley Gallagher, veterinarian at Friendship Hospital For Animals and petMD contributor, sheds some light on some of the most common pet myths. Myth 1: If cats have nine lives, what do dogs have? Cats’ curious nature and quick reaction times are likely the basis of the nine lives reputation, but in reality owners need to remember that both cats and dogs only have one life. That is why it’s important to schedule regular veterinary visits to ensure your pet has a long, healthy and happy one. Going to the veterinarian shouldn’t only be reserved for times when your pet is sick. Your pet needs annual wellness check-ups, vaccines, dental exams and nutritional consultations, just like humans do. Myth 2: Table scraps are OK. Did you know that one ounce of cheddar cheese for a 20-pound dog is like a human eating more than one and a half chocolate bars? That same piece of cheese for a 10-pound cat is like eating almost three full chocolate
bars! Table scraps are basically empty calories for cats and dogs. They need precisely balanced nutrition for their specific life stage and special needs to remain healthy. A food like Hill’s Science Diet is great because it gives them exactly what they need without any excess nutrients that might be harmful. Myth 3: Dogs wag their tail when they are happy. Dogs wag their tail for many reasons; the most common is that they are either happy or nervous. Cats will also wag or flick their tail when they are upset or thinking. Pets communicate via complex body language rather than vocal expression like humans. Learning to read what your pet is telling you will go a long way in helping to build a fulfilling relationship. Ask your veterinarian for advice if you feel stuck learning your pet’s body language cues.
Myth 4: Letting my dog out in the yard is enough exercise. Dogs and cats both need plenty of physical activity and mental stimulation to stay healthy. If you just leave your dog out in the yard alone they might not get much of either. It’s important to take them for walks, play fetch or simply run around together. Not only will it make for a happier, healthier dog, but it will also help to strengthen your relationship. Cats should be kept indoors for their safety, but there are plenty of toys that work their brains and their bodies at the same time. Visit your local pet store to find some toys that fit the bill. Each pet is unique, so ongoing care, including precisely balanced nutrition, regular wellness visits to the vet and daily play periods are all good things that keep your pet healthy and living well for many years to come. - (BPT)

RANCHO MAYOR TONY BEALL ROCKS THE HOUSE at Tijeras Creek Country Club’s ‘Meet The Mayor’ Event last Wednesday Perennially-popular Tony Beall, held court among the movers and shakers of Rancho Santa Margarita’s high society and political heavyweights on Wednesday. His Honor is so far unopposed in his re-election bid for the coveted mayoral post in the fall where his stunning civic record and 19-Million Dollar City surplus will be hard to beat. Among the attendees at the Meet The Mayor Event were several former Rancho Santa Margarita Mayors including current Mayor Pro Tem Carol Gamble who gave a glowing introduction; recent former mayor and current city councilmember Bradley J. McGirr, former mayor Jim Thor, current city councilmember Michael Vaughn, City Manager Jennifer Cervantez, City Clerk Amy Diaz, Chief of Police Services Ron Kennedy, and a crowd of other social and political potentates. Members of Rancho Santa Margarita Chamber of Commerce including Chamber President Suzanne Singh, Chamber Master of Ceremonies Kurt Stanley smoothly handled the proceedings including a popular raffle where several opulent prizes were awarded for the price of a one-dollar ticket, a bargain by any standard. Representatives of the city’s outstanding business and professional organizations also found time to rub shoulders with the elite crowd and enjoyed the ambiance of the glowing sunset gathering in the greenery of the Tijeras Creek Country Page 8
Club. General manager of Tijeras, Rick Convertini, cleverly combined the Mayoral event to coincide with his Grand Re-opening Ceremonies and the ribbon cutting of the newly remodeled Clubhouse and Cantina at Tijeras Creek. Following the elegant buffet, Mayor Beall took the podium but soon abandoned the formal setting to walk among the diners, delighting the admiring crowd which treated him like a rock star with smiles and hearty handshakes. The mayor spoke of his early experience, and the growth of business in Rancho Santa Margarita .Under his direction, with a similarly-minded city council, the city is planning a full-court press on the business community with specific acquisition targets of new car dealers, upscale fine dining, hotels, and a concentrated development plan this summer for the Chiquita Ridge project to determine what mix of homes, ball fields and commercial development can take place on the newly acquired city land across the parkways from Tijeras Creek Country Club. The City will also examine the development planned for the Dove Canyon Shopping Center, and other area business parks and retail locations, all the while the mayor sings the refrain of Rancho Santa Margarita being a business-friendly location for new retail and commercial ventures which seems to be in keeping with the reputation of the City of Rancho Santa Margarita.

Chris Herbert Skinner was presented with the keys to a completely refurbished vehicle as part of the National Auto Body Council’s Recycled Rides™, a nationwide community service program in which collision repair companies, insurers and others in the collision industry collaborate to repair and donate vehicles to families in need. Esurance donated the vehicle and technicians at Caliber Collision donated their personal time as a community service. The vehicle also comes fully loaded with gifts from numerous local businesses and individuals in the community. Skinner joined the United States Coast Guard in 2007 right after high school graduation and thrived in his position as an Operations Specialist where he coordinated Page 10
search and rescue operations and communications security. After a divorce, Skinner transferred to another United States Coast Guard position in Los Angeles so he could maintain a relationship with his 5-year-old son. Unfortunately, after a short time, the position was cut and he would have had to transfer to Alaska. In February 2014, Skinner opted out of the Coast Guard in order to stay close to his son. With limited income from a civilian, commission-based sales position, Skinner and his fiancé, who have an infant daughter, struggled financially. They fell behind on f their bills, had cell phones and utilities shut off, were evicted and lost their only vehicle. They turned to several veteran support organizations for help and received housing assistance, job training and placement assistance. Today both Skinner and his fiancé have part-time jobs and are slowly getting back on their feet. “At Caliber Collision, our highest purpose is to restore our customers and individuals in the communities

we serve to the rhythm of their lives. We appreciate the many years Mr. Skinner dedicated to military service and are honored to provide this vehicle to ease the burden of transportation and help him continue to get back on the road to success,” said David Goldstein, Caliber Collision Senior Vice President of Operations. Skinner was nominated for the Recycled Rides vehicle by Support the Enlisted Project (STEP), whose mission is to provide active duty and veteran family’s financial grants in times of crisis, and through one-onone counseling, develop a plan to achieve financial self-sufficiency. “The Recycled Rides program provides us a way to give back to local community members who are in need,” said Tom DelCorso, director of appraisal at Esurance. “We want to sincerely thank Mr. Skinner for his military service and hope that this gift will have a positive impact on his life.” In the past four years, Caliber Collision has donated more than 80 Recycled Rides vehicles nationwide.

Laura’s House Raises Over $30,000 to Create Brighter Futures Photos by Ann Chatillon It was a day of inspiration, appreciation and hope for the future as nearly 200 supporters of Laura’s House, a Southern California organization dedicated to the prevention and education of domestic violence, gathered at the Balboa Bay Resort for the first annual ‘Brighter Futures’ Luncheon. Chaired by Laura’s House advocate Donna Pickup, the event highlighted the critical community work of the nonprofit and honored those who have helped Laura’s House advance its mission to rebuild the lives of families affected by domestic violence. Each luncheon table was hosted by a significant community leader or local designer and featured personalized décor inspired by the theme of providing brighter futures for Laura’s House families. The event featured touching moments and included inspiring remarks from domestic violence survivor and Laura’s House graduate “Tanya”. Tanya, an Orange County resident, suffered more than 10 years of verbal, psychological, financial and physical abuse from her former husband. She enrolled in Laura’s House Emergency Shelter and Transitional Housing, successfully completing both programs. Smith shared her story with guests to shed light on the traumatic experiences of families affected by abuse, and how she became empowered to create a brighter future for herself and her children. “We are grateful for the opportunity our inaugural Brighter Futures Luncheon presented to honor and thank our dedicated supporters because without them, rebuilding violence-free lives for families such as Tanya’s would not be possible,” said Margaret Bayston, Laura’s House CEO and executive director. Nationally recognized healthy relationships expert, author, psychotherapist and Laura’s House board member Dr. Jill Murray was the luncheon guest speaker. She discussed the importance of prevention and education, and how to stop the cycle of violence before it begins. Laura’s House also presented Brighter Futures Awards to those who have made extraordinary efforts to provide brighter futures for families served by Laura’s House. Two honorees were recognized: The Decorative Arts Society of Newport Beach. They have been a loyal supporter of Laura’s House since 2005. The membership group of community-minded women and men have donated more than $250,000 to assist domestic violence victims. The other honoree was Nicole Prusty from Aliso Viejo. Prusty is a 12-year-old Laura’s House ambassador who spreads awareness about domestic violence by educating and encouraging her peers to get involved. The event also included an opportunity drawing with gifts from Barclay Butera Interiors, SoulCycle Newport Beach, Bacara Resort & Spa and more. Luncheon guests enjoyed an artisan boutique featuring jewelry by James Kanan and hand-woven pashminas by Teji Singh, with a portion of proceeds benefiting Laura’s House. The mission of Laura’s House is to change the social beliefs, attitudes and the behaviors that perpetuate domestic violence while creating a safe space to empower individuals and families affected by abuse. Classic Pizza Margherita
Serves 4 to 6 1 package refrigerated pizza dough 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil, divided 1 package Johnsonville Mild Italian Sausage 1/2 medium red onion, minced 1 tablespoon parsley, minced 1 tablespoon garlic, minced 1 tablespoon oregano 8 Roma tomatoes, sliced (divided — save 10 slices for the top) 10 fresh basil leaves (divided) 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded 1 cup fontina cheese, shredded Pepper and sea salt 1/2 cup fresh Parmesan cheese, grated Position oven rack on lowest shelf and preheat to 425°F. Lightly oil a pizza pan. Roll out dough as thin as possible. Let rest 10 minutes. In small skillet, heat 1 tablespoon oil over medium-high, add sausage and cook until browned. Remove from skillet, cool slightly and coin slice. In the same pan, sauté onion and parsley to golden, then stir in garlic and oregano for a few seconds. Add tomatoes to pan, crushing them as they are mixed (do not substitute crushed tomatoes). Boil, stirring 5 minutes or until thick. Spread sauce over crust, sprinkle with half the basil, mozzarella, fontina, sausage, remaining slices of tomatoes and finally remaining olive oil. Finish with generous pepper and a little sea salt. Bake for 10 minutes. Using a spatula and an oven mitt, slip pizza off pan directly onto oven rack, bake for two minutes. Slip pizza back onto pan, remove from oven. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and remaining fresh basil. Cut and enjoy.

Morning Terrace Pizza
Serves 4 1 10- to 12-inch baguette, cut in two and sliced open, inside dough removed 1 package Johnsonville Mild Italian Sausage 1 1/2 cups fontina, mozzarella or Monterey Jack cheese, shredded Dried red pepper flakes 3 Roma tomatoes, diced 4 whole eggs Pepper, to taste 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese, grated 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped Position oven rack in center of oven and preheat oven to 400°F. Cut baguette in half and then slice it open to create four equal open-faced pieces. Remove the doughy center, leaving a halfinch border close to the edge. In large skillet, sauté sausage until browned. Remove from heat, thinly coin slice and set aside. Top baguettes evenly with 3/4 of shredded cheese. Shake on red pepper flakes to taste. Place sausage pieces evenly on top around the edges. Add the rest of the cheese and the diced tomatoes. Bake for 5 to 8 minutes and remove from oven. Using the back of a spoon, lightly make 4 indentations in the center of the baguettes, not too close to the crust, pushing some of the ingredients to the sides. Carefully crack an egg into each depression. Grind pepper on each egg, and top with Parmesan cheese. Return to oven for 5 to 7 minutes, until egg whites are set, but yolk is still soft. Remove, sprinkle with fresh chives, cut and enjoy.

Lightly oil a pizza pan and roll out crust, thin. In large skillet, heat oil and sauté sausage and red pepper flakes until browned. Remove from heat, drain fat, cool slightly and chop, roughly. Add garlic and onion to skillet and cook about five minutes until onion is soft. Add cherry tomatoes, canned tomatoes, wine and oregano. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Let simmer about 20 minutes, stirring when necessary, until cherry tomatoes are soft and sauce thickens. Add parsley and sausage back into skillet. Remove from heat. Top pizza crust with sausage mixture, grated cheeses and red pepper rings. Bake 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from oven, sprinkle with fresh herbs, cut and enjoy.

Sowing the seeds of spring: How to start your garden indoors While cooler temperatures slowly fade, gardeners across the country eagerly await the arrival of spring and the chance to get outdoors and grow something. If gardening is your passion, you don’t have to wait until the weather is perfect to get started. In fact, working ahead by growing your own seedlings is a great way to ensure your garden is successful throughout the warmer months. “Planting seedlings indoors before transplanting them into the ground is a great use of time and money,” says Darin Brockelbank, owner of Metro-Greenscape, landscape design and outdoor specialists, and members of the Porch.com home improvement network. More than 1.5 million professionals participate in the network, offering services for more than 90 million projects. “Growing seedlings is something homeowners can easily do on their own and save their money to hire professionals for larger projects.” Starting your own seedlings offers many advantages, including the ability to get a jump-start on spring planting. Growing your own plants from seed is less expensive than buying small plants and provides access to a much wider variety of
plants. The pros at Porch.com offer these tips for starting seedlings to get your garden growing: * Selecting seeds Some seeds can be planted and started indoors, while others need to go directly in the ground outdoors. right texture and mixture of nutrients to succeed. Covering your containers with plastic wrap or plastic lids will help keep soil and seeds moist. * Setting the environment In order to germinate, most seeds need a steady temperature of about 78 F. You can create localized warmth for seeds through use of electric heaters or heat mats placed under containers. You can also try placing containers atop warm appliances, such as a refrigerator, as long as they will also receive ample light in the location. Once seedlings push through the soil, you can move them to a windowsill where they’ll get more natural light. * Caring for seedlings It’s important to provide seedlings with constant moisture, but don’t let the soil get soggy. If you used plastic wrap or covers, remove them from containers once seeds have sprouted. When leaves appear, begin fertilizing with a liquid fertilizer. Pay close attention to the dosage amounts recommended on the fertilizer packaging; seedlings are fragile. Check on seedlings daily until you’re ready to plant them outdoors. “If your plants begin to bud before you transplant them to the outdoors,
wait to move them until they are fully bloomed,”-Brockelbank says. “If you transplant them while they are buds and cool weather hits, they could get frost bite and die. When it’s time to transplant the seeds, make sure the soil is no cooler than 60 degrees.” Of course, not everyone with the urge to grow a garden has the time to invest or the green thumb to achieve it. Natural sugar is found in fruits, milk and some whole grains. Added sugar is sugar that is added to processed foods and drinks, such as cookies, cereals and soda. 5 ways to revamp your run Have you ever wished you could just snap your fingers and be able to run a marathon? If only it were that easy. Whether you’re training for a race, want to get in shape or simply enjoy the rhythm of your feet hitting the pavement, running takes consistency and practice. “No matter where you fall on the running spectrum, there’s always room for improvement,” says Rebekah Mayer, National Run Training Manager for Life Time Fitness - The Healthy Way of Life Company. “If you’re striving to become a better runner, you might need to make some changes or switch up your routine.” Below are five tips from Mayer to help amp up your run so you can feel great while making each workout count: Ease into your outdoor runs If you’ve been hitting the treadmill all winter and are just beginning to run outdoors, take it slow. Pavement is harder on your knees and joints than a treadmill belt, and your running form is a little different when you’re outside on the ground. Start by taking some easy workouts outdoors, and then progress into harder workouts. By then, all the trails will be fully clear and your legs will have a chance to adapt.
Ditch the background noise Consider leaving your headphones at home. While music is essential to beat boredom on a treadmill, many runners come to enjoy the quiet solitude or group chatter when running outdoors, especially when you run with a friend. Without headphones, it’s also easier to hear traffic, animals or approaching pedestrians. If music is absolutely necessary, try running with only one ear bud in. 2016 Blenheim Spring Series Leading Hunter Rider Awards Photos by McCool Wrapping up four weeks full of hunter highlights, Blenheim EquiSports would like to congratulate the Leading Hunter Riders from the 2016 Blenheim Spring Series, with awards presented by Romfh Equestrian Apparel. With a number of the best West Coast hunter riders competing during the four week Spring Series, it was the young yet already established Nick Haness who earned the Romfh Leading Professional Hunter Rider Award by accumulating 432.5 points. Romfh also awarded the Leading Amateur Hunter Rider Award, and congratulations goes to Tonia Cook-Looker who rode Wallace throughout the series. The Looker’s own Woodland Oaks Ranch in San Dimas is home to their lovely string of horses and ponies. Lexie Looker also had a successful circuit in the Junior and the Pony divisions. She came in a close second to Augusta Iwasaki for the Romfh Equestrian Apparel Leading Junior Hunter Rider Award. Iwasaki pulled ahead on the final day of the series, after she won three classes and placed high in several others. Showing several mounts successfully in both divisions throughout the series, Iwasaki earned a double congratulations for winning both the Romfh Equestrian Apparel Leading Junior and Leading Pony Rider Awards at the end of the Spring Series. “It’s nice for the hunters and hunter riders to get this recognition,” said Liz Reilly, partner in Makoto Farms and Augusta Iwasaki’s mom. “Augusta is lucky to have such great opportunities on ponies and horses. She is passionate about each one, and is excited about each success. She was especially excited to win a ‘Leading Rider’ award.” After a handful of wins and a number of top placings, Lauren Flather brought home the Romfh Equestrian Apparel Leading Children’s Hunter Rider Award riding her horse Amar in the 13 & Under division. Amateur-Owner Hunter rider Lindsay Maxwell dominated the 3’6” & 3’3” divisions with her own Kingston &
Wallace and Tonia Cook-Looker with Laura Romfh Catalyst to claim the Romfh Leading Amateur Owner Hunter Rider title.
