LADERA SPORTS CENTER TO HOST L.A. CLIPPERS YOUTH HOOPS CAMPS Orange County Basketball Players Ages Six to 14 Invited to Train with Former Pro Players August 8 to 12 Ladera Sports Center is pleased to announce the L.A. Clippers will host Youth Hoops camps for basketball players ages six to 14 from August 8 through 12 at the $35 million solarpowered multi-use facility, currently under construction in Ladera Ranch, Calif. “The L.A. Clippers are extremely excited about partnering with the most advanced facility in Southern California to host our youth basketball summer camp,” said Maurice Baker, supervisor of youth basketball programs for the L.A. Clippers. “Working with Ladera Sports Center is the best opportunity to show the people of Orange County our respect for their beautiful community.” Each camper will receive exclusive L.A. Clippers Youth Hoops gear, including a reversible jersey, drawstring backpack, replica Spalding basketball, baller band and $25 ticket credit to see the Clippers live at select 2016-17 home games. The camp will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and costs $240 per camper. “This camp is just one of many wonderful opportunities we’re now able to offer athletes of all ages in Orange County,” said H. Michael Schwartz, CEO of SmartStop Asset Management, Inc., who designed,

financed and is building the facility. “We will be offering many special programs and events of this caliber in the years to come.” Ladera Sports Center, which is being built on approximately four acres on Terrace Road near the intersection of Crown Valley Parkway and Antonio Parkway in Southern California’s Ladera Ranch, is nearly 60 percent complete and will hold a grand opening celebration on August 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Several South Orange County clubs—

including Team Nikos Basketball Academy, Ladera Ranch National Junior Basketball, the San Clemente Volleyball Club, Little Rookies Youth Sports and Ladera Ranch Strength and Conditioning—have already signed on. “We’re excited to have the L.A. Clippers come down to our facility,” said Steve Williams, CEO of Ladera Sports Center. “Former L.A. Clippers and ambassador Lamond Murray will be leading the camp and over 100 players have already signed up!”

Ladera Sports Center will feature a 60,000-square-foot gymnasium with 48,750 square feet of court spaces— eight state-of-the-art basketball and volleyball courts—that have airconditioning, noise decibel reduction systems, superior wood flooring and ceiling-mounted volleyball nets with ample spectator seats per court. Campers can register on the L.A. Clippers Youth Hoops website. Questions can be directed to Maurice Baker, (213) 804-2013 or mbaker@ clippers.com.

Busted: The top 4 most common pet myths It’s no secret that Americans love their pets. When it comes to U.S. pet ownership, 39 percent of households own at least one dog, and 33 percent own at least one cat, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Furry family members bring joy and excitement to a household, and providing the best care possible helps ensure pets have a long, healthy life. Unfortunately, with so much information available, it’s easy to become confused about what’s really best for them. To cut through the clutter, Dr. Ashley Gallagher, veterinarian at Friendship Hospital For Animals and petMD contributor, sheds some light on some of the most common pet myths. Myth 1: If cats have nine lives, what do dogs have? Cats’ curious nature and quick reaction times are likely the basis of the nine lives reputation, but in reality owners need to remember that both cats and dogs only have one life. That is why it’s important to schedule regular veterinary visits to ensure your pet has a long, healthy and happy one. Going to the veterinarian shouldn’t only be reserved for times when your pet is sick. Your pet needs annual wellness check-ups, vaccines, dental exams and nutritional consultations, just like humans do. Myth 2: Table scraps are OK. Did you know that one ounce of cheddar cheese for a 20-pound dog is like a human eating more than one and a half chocolate bars? That same piece of cheese for a 10-pound cat is like eating almost three full chocolate

bars! Table scraps are basically empty calories for cats and dogs. They need precisely balanced nutrition for their specific life stage and special needs to remain healthy. A food like Hill’s Science Diet is great because it gives them exactly what they need without any excess nutrients that might be harmful. Myth 3: Dogs wag their tail when they are happy. Dogs wag their tail for many reasons; the most common is that they are either happy or nervous. Cats will also wag or flick their tail when they are upset or thinking. Pets communicate via complex body language rather than vocal expression like humans. Learning to read what your pet is telling you will go a long way in helping to build a fulfilling relationship. Ask your veterinarian for advice if you feel stuck learning your pet’s body language cues.

Myth 4: Letting my dog out in the yard is enough exercise. Dogs and cats both need plenty of physical activity and mental stimulation to stay healthy. If you just leave your dog out in the yard alone they might not get much of either. It’s important to take them for walks, play fetch or simply run around together. Not only will it make for a happier, healthier dog, but it will also help to strengthen your relationship. Cats should be kept indoors for their safety, but there are plenty of toys that work their brains and their bodies at the same time. Visit your local pet store to find some toys that fit the bill. Each pet is unique, so ongoing care, including precisely balanced nutrition, regular wellness visits to the vet and daily play periods are all good things that keep your pet healthy and living well for many years to come. - (BPT)

R A N C H O M A Y O R T O N Y B E A L L R O C K S T H E H O U S E at ‘Meet The Mayor’ Event at Tijeras Creek Country Club Rancho Santa Margarita’s Only 5-time Mayor Tony Beall Charms the Country Club Crowds

RANCHO MAYOR TONY BEALL ROCKS THE HOUSE at Tijeras Creek Country Club’s ‘Meet The Mayor’ Event last Wednesday Perennially-popular Tony Beall, held court among the movers and shakers of Rancho Santa Margarita’s high society and political heavyweights on Wednesday. His Honor is so far unopposed in his re-election bid for the coveted mayoral post in the fall where his stunning civic record and 19-Million Dollar City surplus will be hard to beat. Among the attendees at the Meet The Mayor Event were several former Rancho Santa Margarita Mayors including current Mayor Pro Tem Carol Gamble who gave a glowing introduction; recent former mayor and current city councilmember Bradley J. McGirr, former mayor Jim Thor, current city councilmember Michael Vaughn, City Manager Jennifer Cervantez, City Clerk Amy Diaz, Chief of Police Services Ron Kennedy, and a crowd of other social and political potentates. Members of Rancho Santa Margarita Chamber of Commerce including Chamber President Suzanne Singh, Chamber Master of Ceremonies Kurt Stanley smoothly handled the proceedings including a popular raffle where several opulent prizes were awarded for the price of a one-dollar ticket, a bargain by any standard. Representatives of the city’s outstanding business and professional organizations also found time to rub shoulders with the elite crowd and enjoyed the ambiance of the glowing sunset gathering in the greenery of the Tijeras Creek Country Page 8

Club. General manager of Tijeras, Rick Convertini, cleverly combined the Mayoral event to coincide with his Grand Re-opening Ceremonies and the ribbon cutting of the newly remodeled Clubhouse and Cantina at Tijeras Creek. Following the elegant buffet, Mayor Beall took the podium but soon abandoned the formal setting to walk among the diners, delighting the admiring crowd which treated him like a rock star with smiles and hearty handshakes. The mayor spoke of his early experience, and the growth of business in Rancho Santa Margarita .Under his direction, with a similarly-minded city council, the city is planning a full-court press on the business community with specific acquisition targets of new car dealers, upscale fine dining, hotels, and a concentrated development plan this summer for the Chiquita Ridge project to determine what mix of homes, ball fields and commercial development can take place on the newly acquired city land across the parkways from Tijeras Creek Country Club. The City will also examine the development planned for the Dove Canyon Shopping Center, and other area business parks and retail locations, all the while the mayor sings the refrain of Rancho Santa Margarita being a business-friendly location for new retail and commercial ventures which seems to be in keeping with the reputation of the City of Rancho Santa Margarita.

L ocal B usinesses D onate C ar to H elp C oast G uard Veteran through T ough T imes National Military Appreciation Month Recycled Rides Vehicle Unveiling Ceremony on Thursday at Caliber Collision in Rancho Santa Margarita

(From left) Trevor Horton, Regional Manager of Caliber Collision presents keys to Chris Skinner, his fiancé’ Maria, with Rancho Santa Margarita Mayor Tony Beall who was also on hand for the event To commemorate May as Military Appreciation Month, Caliber Collision, Esurance and several businesses are teaming up thank a local Coast Guard veteran for his service with a car donation to help him through some tough times. Chris Herbert Skinner was presented with the keys to a completely refurbished vehicle as part of the National Auto Body Council’s Recycled Rides™, a nationwide community service program in which collision repair companies, insurers and others in the collision industry collaborate to repair and donate vehicles to families in need. Esurance donated the vehicle and technicians at Caliber Collision donated their personal time as a community service. The vehicle also comes fully loaded with gifts from numerous local businesses and individuals in the community. Skinner joined the United States Coast Guard in 2007 right after high school graduation and thrived in his position as an Operations Specialist where he coordinated Page 10

search and rescue operations and communications security. After a divorce, Skinner transferred to another United States Coast Guard position in Los Angeles so he could maintain a relationship with his 5-year-old son. Unfortunately, after a short time, the position was cut and he would have had to transfer to Alaska. In February 2014, Skinner opted out of the Coast Guard in order to stay close to his son. With limited income from a civilian, commission-based sales position, Skinner and his fiancé, who have an infant daughter, struggled financially. They fell behind on f their bills, had cell phones and utilities shut off, were evicted and lost their only vehicle. They turned to several veteran support organizations for help and received housing assistance, job training and placement assistance. Today both Skinner and his fiancé have part-time jobs and are slowly getting back on their feet. “At Caliber Collision, our highest purpose is to restore our customers and individuals in the communities

we serve to the rhythm of their lives. We appreciate the many years Mr. Skinner dedicated to military service and are honored to provide this vehicle to ease the burden of transportation and help him continue to get back on the road to success,” said David Goldstein, Caliber Collision Senior Vice President of Operations. Skinner was nominated for the Recycled Rides vehicle by Support the Enlisted Project (STEP), whose mission is to provide active duty and veteran family’s financial grants in times of crisis, and through one-onone counseling, develop a plan to achieve financial self-sufficiency. “The Recycled Rides program provides us a way to give back to local community members who are in need,” said Tom DelCorso, director of appraisal at Esurance. “We want to sincerely thank Mr. Skinner for his military service and hope that this gift will have a positive impact on his life.” In the past four years, Caliber Collision has donated more than 80 Recycled Rides vehicles nationwide.

Caliber plans on donating an additional 40 vehicles in 2016 to individuals in need as a way to give back to the communities that Caliber serves. Laura’s House Raises Over $30,000 to Create Brighter Futures Photos by Ann Chatillon It was a day of inspiration, appreciation and hope for the future as nearly 200 supporters of Laura’s House, a Southern California organization dedicated to the prevention and education of domestic violence, gathered at the Balboa Bay Resort for the first annual ‘Brighter Futures’ Luncheon. Chaired by Laura’s House advocate Donna Pickup, the event highlighted the critical community work of the nonprofit and honored those who have helped Laura’s House advance its mission to rebuild the lives of families affected by domestic violence. Each luncheon table was hosted by a significant community leader or local designer and featured personalized décor inspired by the theme of providing brighter futures for Laura’s House families. The event featured touching moments and included inspiring remarks from domestic violence survivor and Laura’s House graduate “Tanya”. Tanya, an Orange County resident, suffered more than 10 years of verbal, psychological, financial and physical abuse from her former husband. She enrolled in Laura’s House Emergency Shelter and Transitional Housing, successfully completing both programs. Smith shared her story with guests to shed light on the traumatic experiences of families affected by abuse, and how she became empowered to create a brighter future for herself and her children. “We are grateful for the opportunity our inaugural Brighter Futures Luncheon presented to honor and thank our dedicated supporters because without them, rebuilding violence-free lives for families such as Tanya’s would not be possible,” said Margaret Bayston, Laura’s House CEO and executive director. Nationally recognized healthy relationships expert, author, psychotherapist and Laura’s House board member Dr. Jill Murray was the luncheon guest speaker. She discussed the importance of prevention and education, and how to stop the cycle of violence before it begins. Laura’s House also presented Brighter Futures Awards to those who have made extraordinary efforts to provide brighter futures for families served by Laura’s House. Two honorees were recognized: The Decorative Arts Society of Newport Beach. They have been a loyal supporter of Laura’s House since 2005. The membership group of community-minded women and men have donated more than $250,000 to assist domestic violence victims. The other honoree was Nicole Prusty from Aliso Viejo. Prusty is a 12-year-old Laura’s House ambassador who spreads awareness about domestic violence by educating and encouraging her peers to get involved. The event also included an opportunity drawing with gifts from Barclay Butera Interiors, SoulCycle Newport Beach, Bacara Resort & Spa and more. Luncheon guests enjoyed an artisan boutique featuring jewelry by James Kanan and hand-woven pashminas by Teji Singh, with a portion of proceeds benefiting Laura’s House. The mission of Laura’s House is to change the social beliefs, attitudes and the behaviors that perpetuate domestic violence while creating a safe space to empower individuals and families affected by abuse. For more than 20 years, Laura’s House has served those whose lives have been affected by domestic violence. Over the past two decades, Laura’s House has provided shelter and support services to more than 4,000 battered women and children and counseling, life skills education and legal assistance to nearly 50,000 people. Elegant outdoor entertaining on a dime

Wish your soiree could have a bit more swagger? You don’t need a celebrity budget and abode to throw a stunning celebration. With just a bit of creative vision and DIY savvy, you’ll have an affair to remember in no time at all. Sensational seating The first step to ensure an enjoyable event is to provide enough seating for your guests to relax. Enhance the look of your current table and chairs with a quick finish update with Rust Protector from

Krylon. This spray paint works wonders on weathered metal tables and chairs, providing coverage, durability and corrosion protection. Available in several new multi-color, textured finishes it dries in as little as eight minutes so that you can quickly move on to other aspects of your party planning. Elegant ambiance Once your seating area is set, create an eye-catching centerpiece to set the mood. Turn forgotten pedestal candle holders into chic showpieces

Dressing up for a cause

During the recent run of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Rodgers + Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA at the Segerstrom Center of the Arts, guests were encouraged to bring gently used clothing to the theater where the team from Anika’s Pink Closet was on hand to collect the generous donations. Page 14

that will impress guests and inspire dinner table dialog. Simply spray paint each with a coordinating color of Krylon’s Rust Protector Multicolor Textured Finish for an updated and elegant look. Once dry, add candles of various heights and decorate the bases with pebbles or decorative beads for subtle and sophisticated ambiance. Let there be light While your new centerpiece will illuminate the table area in the evening, be sure to light up the night with additional accent lighting. Tiki torches are an easy and inexpensive solution that provide excellent perimeter lighting and can even work double duty to keep pesky mosquitos at bay, ensuring your invited guests don’t bolt because of uninvited ones. Luscious libations A signature drink can be a fun treat for your guests - but be sure the vessel is just as festive. An inexpensive and trendy way to keep guests refreshed and delighted is to serve your libations in the classic mason jar. Jazz up the jars by placing peel-and-stick chalkboard labels on the jars and provide chalk for

guests to write their names. And as the final touch, offer mini umbrellas or nostalgic striped paper straws to allow guests to sip in style. Heat it up Why not enjoy your tasty refreshments around a fire pit when the sun has finally set? It’s the perfect ambiance to relax and enjoy company. Restore your rusty fire pit from last season with Krylon’s High Heat Max spray paint, a durable and stylish option for DIYers who want to touch-up surfaces that need to withstand extreme temperature swings. It delivers maximum color and rust resistance in three contemporary finishes, including black, aluminum and copper, for a designer look all year long. You don’t have to spend a ton of money to create an elegant gathering that will impress guests. By paying attention to small, inexpensive details, you can turn a bland backyard, patio or deck into a stylish spot for entertaining that won’t leave you penniless at the end of the night. The Wait is Over! Disney’s NEWSIES Makes Its Long Anticipated Costa Mesa Premiere Disney’s NEWSIES will play an exclusive two-week premiere engagement at Segerstrom Center for the Arts with performances May 17 - 29, 2016 in Segerstrom Hall. Individual tickets for NEWSIES start at $25 and may be purchased online at SCFTA.org, the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 556-2787. For inquiries about group tickets for 10 or more, call the Group Services office at (714) 755-0236. The 2 p.m. performance on Saturday, May 28, 2016 will include audio description, open captioning and sign-language interpretation. ABOUT NEWSIES NEWSIES, the new American musical, features a Tony® Awardwinning score with music by eighttime Academy Award® winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, a book by four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein and is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, NEWSIES is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli, who won a 2012 Tony Award® for his work. The entire creative team has reunited to bring the break-out smash musical to audiences across North America. When it opened on March 29, 2012 NEWSIES was intended for a Broadway run of just 101 performances. The show’s fiercely devoted fans had other ideas, however; they propelled the show to a run of 1,005 performances, attendance of more than 1 million and a gross of over $100M. While on Broadway, NEWSIES set and broke seven Nederlander Theatre house records and became the highest-grossing show from the 2011-12 Broadway season. The show received 23 major theatrical nominations – including eight Tony Award nods – and won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Score and Choreography. Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged

band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. NEWSIES is inspired by the reallife ‘Newsboy Strike of 1899,’ when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. The stage version introduces seven brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman, including a song written specifically for the tour called ‘Letter from the Refuge,’ while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’ Since the film’s 1992 theatrical release and subsequent DVD release, NEWSIES has grown into

a cult phenomenon, and for years had been the single most requested title of all the Disney musical films not yet adapted for the stage. (The film featured a screenplay by Bob Tzudiker & Noni White (Tarzan, 102 Dalmatians). For more information, visit NewsiesTheMusical.com, Facebook. com/Newsies and Twitter.com/ Newsies. The Costa Mesa engagement of NEWSIES is presented by arrangement with Segerstrom Center for the Arts and is a subscription offering of the Broadway and Curtain Call Series. Segerstrom Center for the Arts applauds Kia, Official Automotive Partner of the Center, and United Airlines, Official Airline of the Center. Time Warner is the Media Partner of the Broadway and Curtain Call Series. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is an acclaimed arts institution as well as a beautiful multi-disciplinary cultural campus. It is committed to supporting artistic excellence on all of its stages, offering unsurpassed experiences, and to engaging the entire community in new and exciting ways through the unique power of live performance and a diverse array of inspiring programs. Previously called the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Segerstrom Center is Orange County’s largest non-profit arts organization. In addition to its six performance venues, Segerstrom Center is also home to the American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie

School, where students ages 3 – 14 are taught by acclaimed teachers utilizing the renowned ABT National Training Curriculum in studios utilized by the world’s greatest dancers and choreographers. The Center presents a broad range of programming for audiences of all ages, including international ballet and dance, national tours of top Broadway shows, intimate performances of jazz and cabaret, contemporary artists, classical music performed by renowned chamber orchestras and ensembles, family-friendly programming, free performances open to the public from outdoor movie screenings to dancing on the plaza and many other special events. The Center’s education programs are designed to inspire young people through the arts and reach hundreds of thousands of students each year. In addition to the presenting and producing institution Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the 14-acre campus also embraces the facilities of two independently acclaimed organizations: Tony Award®-winning South Coast Repertory and a site designated as the future home of the Orange County Museum of Art. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is also proud to serve as the artistic home to three of the region’s major performing arts organizations: Pacific Symphony, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County and the Pacific Chorale, who contribute greatly to the artistic life of the region with annual seasons at Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

Sowing the seeds of spring: How to start your garden indoors While cooler temperatures slowly fade, gardeners across the country eagerly await the arrival of spring and the chance to get outdoors and grow something. If gardening is your passion, you don’t have to wait until the weather is perfect to get started. In fact, working ahead by growing your own seedlings is a great way to ensure your garden is successful throughout the warmer months. “Planting seedlings indoors before transplanting them into the ground is a great use of time and money,” says Darin Brockelbank, owner of Metro-Greenscape, landscape design and outdoor specialists, and members of the Porch.com home improvement network. More than 1.5 million professionals participate in the network, offering services for more than 90 million projects. “Growing seedlings is something homeowners can easily do on their own and save their money to hire professionals for larger projects.” Starting your own seedlings offers many advantages, including the ability to get a jump-start on spring planting. Growing your own plants from seed is less expensive than buying small plants and provides access to a much wider variety of

plants. The pros at Porch.com offer these tips for starting seedlings to get your garden growing: * Selecting seeds Some seeds can be planted and started indoors, while others need to go directly in the ground outdoors. As you’re choosing seeds for your garden, read the packets thoroughly to ensure the seeds you’re buying are appropriate for indoor planting. Be aware that many vegetable seeds need to be planted directly in the ground. Most packages will also include information on what time of year to plant, so follow the guidelines for best results. In general, start seeds about six weeks before the last frost date. Check the Farmer’s Almanac Frost Date Calculator to find out when that is in your area. * Choosing containers Seed starter kits are available for easy planting, but any container will do as long as it is about 2 to 3 inches deep and has drainage holes. Egg cartons and paper cups are inexpensive and easy options; be sure to poke drainage holes in the bottoms. Fill your containers with a good soil mix - never use regular soil from your yard. Seeds need just the

right texture and mixture of nutrients to succeed. Covering your containers with plastic wrap or plastic lids will help keep soil and seeds moist. * Setting the environment In order to germinate, most seeds need a steady temperature of about 78 F. You can create localized warmth for seeds through use of electric heaters or heat mats placed under containers. You can also try placing containers atop warm appliances, such as a refrigerator, as long as they will also receive ample light in the location. Once seedlings push through the soil, you can move them to a windowsill where they’ll get more natural light. * Caring for seedlings It’s important to provide seedlings with constant moisture, but don’t let the soil get soggy. If you used plastic wrap or covers, remove them from containers once seeds have sprouted. When leaves appear, begin fertilizing with a liquid fertilizer. Pay close attention to the dosage amounts recommended on the fertilizer packaging; seedlings are fragile. Check on seedlings daily until you’re ready to plant them outdoors. “If your plants begin to bud before you transplant them to the outdoors,

wait to move them until they are fully bloomed,”-Brockelbank says. “If you transplant them while they are buds and cool weather hits, they could get frost bite and die. When it’s time to transplant the seeds, make sure the soil is no cooler than 60 degrees.” Of course, not everyone with the urge to grow a garden has the time to invest or the green thumb to achieve it. If you find yourself lacking the resources to plant and care for seedlings, Porch.com has plenty of professionals who can help you get and keep - your garden growing. “The hardest part of planting seeds indoors is caring for them before they are transplanted,”-Brockelbank says. “Once they are transplanted, the plants should be very low maintenance.” -(BPT)

Swap Out Sugar for Better Health You probably realize that eating too many sugary foods and gaining weight go hand in hand. What you may not know is that aside from loading up on calories that help pack on the pounds, consuming too much sugar can also harm your health in other ways. Consuming more than nine teaspoons of sugar a day for men and six teaspoons for women can lead to health problems, such as tooth decay, obesity and depression. Reducing your sugar intake can help more than your waistline; it can improve your overall health. First, it’s important to recognize that there are two types of sugar – natural sugar and added sugar. Natural sugar is found in fruits, milk and some whole grains. Added sugar is sugar that is added to processed foods and drinks, such as cookies, cereals and soda. Added sugar affects your body in many ways. It can be as addictive as drugs, tobacco or alcohol because it affects the same regions of the brain, triggering the pleasure sensors to release dopamine. Dopamine makes you want to eat more, even when you

are not hungry. When you consume too much added sugar, your liver has to work extra hard to process it. Excess sugar in the liver often turns into fat, which can lead to liver damage or other health concerns, such as high cholesterol, diabetes or heart disease. It can also overload and damage your pancreas, which controls the blood sugar called insulin that powers your muscles and organs. Lack of insulin can cause muscle and nerve damage. Limit added sugars in your diet with these healthy alternatives: • Skip sugary cereals at breakfast. Instead, opt for a protein-rich meal. Options, such as eggs, turkey sausage and whole-wheat toast with peanut butter are healthier ways to fuel your day. • Bring healthy snacks to work to ward off the temptation of sugary treats. Some smart choices include: frozen grapes, trail mix, yogurt, almonds, apple slices and peanut butter with celery sticks. • Instead of pie, donuts or cake,

curb your sweet tooth craving by reaching for fresh fruit, low-fat frozen yogurt or a fruit and yogurt parfait. • If you can’t substitute a fruit, make your treats small, such as a single fun-size piece of candy. • Sodas, energy drinks and sports drinks sneak in a lot of sugar calories. In fact, a single can of soda has nine teaspoons of sugar – the maximum

an adult male should consume in an entire day. Skip the sugary beverages and try hot or iced tea, fizzy water or lemon water instead. Choosing simple substitutions make it easy to replace sugary foods with smarter options for better health. Visit guardyourhealth.com for more food and nutrition tips and resources. 5 S imple T ips for B irthday B ash S uccess Whether you’re planning a princess tea party or a superhero birthday bash, the secret to organizing a party your child will treasure is to keep your little one’s interests at the forefront. If your child does well in smaller groups, keep the guest list small. Plan the menu around his or her favorite foods and look for little touches that celebrate the unique joy he or she brings to your family. Make your little one’s big day extra special with these simple tips that make childhood birthday parties manageable but magnificent: 1. Set a theme. Building your celebration around a theme that reflects your child brings an added touch of fun and excitement. Popular options include a favorite color, sport, activity or character. While the Internet offers a mind-boggling array of ideas for crafting the perfect theme, there also are a variety of partyready options for busy moms with limited time. For example, Hershey’s new birthday products, available at select Walmart locations, can be added to almost every aspect of the celebration, from decorations to party favors and special treats to games

and prizes. 2. Decorate the guests. There’s no reason to stop with streamers and balloons. Integrate your guests into the decor with fun activities that bring your theme to life. Face paint, washable tattoos or stamps let little guests take an active role in the party and express a little creativity of their own. 3. Amp up the activity. Create opportunities for all the little partygoers to participate in the festivities with interactive games that tie back to the theme of the party. Old-school favorites like pin-the-tail on the donkey can be updated to reflect today’s popular characters; makeyour-own slime or clay is the perfect project for a group of mad scientists; or a treasure hunt can be adapted to nearly any theme. 4. Add some fancy to the food. If your party menu calls for more than cake and ice cream, you can take advantage of another avenue to carry through your theme. A little creativity, some clever monikers and a few basic modifications can quickly transform everyday snacks into festive fun. For example, a dinosaur party might

feature Brontosaurus Burgers and T-Rex Trail Mix. The options are nearly endless, and if you’re at a loss, you can find ample inspiration online. 5. Offer a fond farewell. No birthday party is complete without treats to send partygoers home happy. However, goodie bags need not be costly or elaborate. An inexpensive item such as bubbles or sidewalk chalk tied in theme-colored ribbon is a fun choice for many ages. When it comes to candy, favorite Hershey’s products – from Kit Kat

Miniatures to Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups Miniatures to iconic Kisses chocolates – are now available in birthday-themed designs for a sweet ending to any celebration. Simply package items in a vessel that fits the theme, such as a purse for a princess party or a small pail for a beach blast. Find more ideas for throwing a birthday bash to remember at HersheyBirthdays.com or visit select Walmart locations to find all your birthday party needs. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

River cruising: An easy way to explore and experience Europe Europe is a popular destination for international travelers looking to visit the world’s great capitals such as Paris, Amsterdam and Prague; to experience European culture; and to explore charming small towns. But planning a European trip can be daunting because it involves a lot of research to decide where to go, how to get there, and what to see. River cruising offers an excellent solution to this travel challenge for these reasons: * See Europe’s great cities: Many of Europe’s greatest cities such as Budapest, Paris, Vienna and Prague developed along the rivers because of the easy means of transportation and trade, as well as access to fresh water. That’s why river cruises can easily access so many of Europe’s cosmopolitan cities, and even quaint towns and villages which developed along the river banks. Sleek, intimate ships hosting only about 200 passengers are much smaller than ocean cruise ships, and often can dock right in the heart of town so passengers can walk right off and start exploring. * Immerse in the culture: In addition to being able to explore a new city each day of the cruise, river cruising allows travelers to develop a deep understanding of the cultures they explore. For example, Viking Cruises - the largest river cruise line - has launched 10 new river cruise ships this year alone and includes a “Cultural Curriculum” Page 24

on all itineraries. This Culture Curriculum offers passengers language lessons, demonstrations of regional cooking and crafts, visits to local marketplaces and privileged access to cultural treasures. Whether privately touring the ancestral home of Prague’s Prince Lobkowicz, or providing guided tours with the best English-speaking local guides, Viking Cruises offers many ways to get up close with local culture on their cruises. * Explore alone or with a knowledgeable guide: River cruise travelers have the option to explore destinations on their own or with a local guide on a group tour. This flexibility gives passengers a chance to experience the local culture as they wish. For travelers with specific interests, Viking Cruises offers a complimentary concierge to help connect travelers with local treasures like a decadent chocolatier or reservations at local restaurants. * Pack and unpack just once but see multiple destinations: River cruising gives passengers the freedom to travel without the hassle of changing hotels, packing and unpacking multiple times, or finding transportation. These smooth-sailing cruises are the fastest-growing travel segment also because the views along the river are everchanging, providing a relaxing and highly scenic way to travel, and there’s never any seasickness as can happen on an ocean cruise.

The Coto de Caza News

Because river cruising creates so many opportunities to visit different destinations on a relaxing, scenic vacation, it’s easy to understand why these cruises are growing in popularity. Start planning your river cruise today and begin daydreaming about all the sites you’re going to see and different cultures you can experience. - (BPT)

5 ways to revamp your run Have you ever wished you could just snap your fingers and be able to run a marathon? If only it were that easy. Whether you’re training for a race, want to get in shape or simply enjoy the rhythm of your feet hitting the pavement, running takes consistency and practice. “No matter where you fall on the running spectrum, there’s always room for improvement,” says Rebekah Mayer, National Run Training Manager for Life Time Fitness - The Healthy Way of Life Company. “If you’re striving to become a better runner, you might need to make some changes or switch up your routine.” Below are five tips from Mayer to help amp up your run so you can feel great while making each workout count: Ease into your outdoor runs If you’ve been hitting the treadmill all winter and are just beginning to run outdoors, take it slow. Pavement is harder on your knees and joints than a treadmill belt, and your running form is a little different when you’re outside on the ground. Start by taking some easy workouts outdoors, and then progress into harder workouts. By then, all the trails will be fully clear and your legs will have a chance to adapt.

Ditch the background noise Consider leaving your headphones at home. While music is essential to beat boredom on a treadmill, many runners come to enjoy the quiet solitude or group chatter when running outdoors, especially when you run with a friend. Without headphones, it’s also easier to hear traffic, animals or approaching pedestrians. If music is absolutely necessary, try running with only one ear bud in. Make it memorable Take the time to make some of your runs a little more interesting. Is there a trail system a short drive from your home or nearest health club? Even if it doesn’t fit into your daily routine, doing some runs at a more scenic location every so often can make the miles much more enjoyable. Changing up your routine also helps keep your body challenged so you can continue to build strength and endurance. Gather your running buddies Running with friends is one of the best ways to stay motivated. Running with a buddy on a treadmill is fun as well, but an outdoor running pal or group can help the time and miles pass more quickly. Life Time destinations nationwide host Tuesday Night Social

Running partners can be good pace setters as well and might even suggest some new running routes or trails you’ve never tried before. Dress the part If you run in the dark, choose reflective clothing and a headlamp for safety. On rainy days, add a water resistant jacket and a cap to keep water out of your eyes. This will

Showing several mounts successfully in both divisions throughout the series, Iwasaki earned a double congratulations for winning both the Romfh Equestrian Apparel Leading Junior and Leading Pony Rider Awards at the end of the Spring Series. “It’s nice for the hunters and hunter riders to get this recognition,” said Liz Reilly, partner in Makoto Farms and Augusta Iwasaki’s mom. “Augusta is lucky to have such great opportunities on ponies and horses. She is passionate about each one, and is excited about each success. She was especially excited to win a ‘Leading Rider’ award.” After a handful of wins and a number of top placings, Lauren Flather brought home the Romfh Equestrian Apparel Leading Children’s Hunter Rider Award riding her horse Amar in the 13 & Under division.
