M a k e a s tr i k i n g f o c a l p o i n t t h e foundation of your spa-like bathroom

American homeowners’ desire for spa-like bathrooms shows no signs of waning, says the latest Design Trends report by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). From freestanding bath tubs and floating vanities to LED lighting and soothing color schemes, some of the mostrequested bathroom renovations focus on creating the atmosphere of luxury and calm found in world-class spas. With the average mid- to upscale bathroom remodeling costing in the range of $30,000, homeowners are also looking for the most costeffective way to create that spa-like feeling. Many are opting to build their bathroom renovations around a focal point, such as a freestanding tub or luxury shower, and round out the effect with more modest accessories and fixtures. Choosing a focal point Homeowners are choosing to install freestanding soaking tubs in their master bathrooms, in particular, to create an exclusive sanctuary of relaxation. In fact, in 2016 half of NKBA members were asked to install freestanding tubs in bathroom remodels, and 60 percent expect to be doing more of them in 2017. Traditionally styled freestanding tubs were often claw-footed fixtures that meshed well with conventional design themes, but struggled to fit into the sleek, contemporary lines associated with a spa-like setting. Strikingly modern freestanding tubs offer expanded design flexibility as a focal point in today’s spa-inspired bathroom settings. Options like the American Standard Coastal-Serin Freestanding Tub in high-gloss cast acrylic enhance the deep soaking space of a luxurious tub with a clean, simple and modern profile that fits well in spa-like bathroom design. Few bathroom fixtures speak of luxury as clearly and loudly as a showpiece bathtub. A deep, sumptuous freestanding tub not only provides a restful spot for a soothing soak after a long day, it also serves as a striking visual focal point for

modern baths. Considering Fixture Alternatives Already have a standard alcove tub, but still want to create your spa at home? Try installing a deep soak tub drain, which has a unique overflow feature that allows 2-inch deeper water than a standard bathtub drain. This universal drain works in most standard bathtubs - and that could be yours. Replacing a standard toilet seat with an upscale option like the DXV AT100 SpaLet Electronic Bidet Seat furthers the luxuriousness of the bathroom without the cost commitment and permanency of installing a full bidet. Its heated seat, choice of water temperature and volume for the two cleansing wands, and the oh-so-decadent warm air dryer are the ultimate self-indulgence to bring the spa right into your home. Wood vanities and storage cabinets for bath linens continue to be popular with today’s consumers. Floating vanities and open shelving, which are gaining in use with interior designers and homeowners alike, can further the effect of an upscale spa by creating a visually clean, uncluttered effect. Rounding out the theme Soft, pale greens and aquas have long been associated with spa-like design, but in 2017 bathroom color choices are trending toward grays, off whites, blues and violets, according to the Design Trends report. Sedate and

subtle are the hallmarks of spa color schemes, so when choosing yours keep in mind the calm effect you want to achieve. Also, remember your color scheme doesn’t have to be limited to the walls; consider incorporating your chosen colors into cabinetry, countertops and accessories. Flexible lighting is also key for a spa-like bathroom. Remember to incorporate brighter lighting where you’ll need it most, such as around vanities, and add features like dimmers that will allow you to reduce the amount of light in the room when you want to create a relaxing atmosphere. Finally, adding touches that appeal to all your senses, such as music, mood lighting and aromatherapy can elevate a bathroom to a spa-like environment. Whether you opt for a full surround system in your bathroom or add waterproof blue tooth speakers in the shower, it’s easy to bring music into your spa bath. Scent adds yet another layer of luxury and is easy to achieve, whether you choose a simple arrangement of essential oils and diffuser reeds or an electronic diffuser that gently mists aroma into the room. Americans view their bathrooms as more than just a room to take care of business. Infusing your master bathroom with spa-like features can turn the room into an oasis of relaxation and luxury. - (BPT)

Rancho Santa Margarita Native and Mine Hunter Serves with the U.S. Navy Half a World Away

A Rancho Santa Margarita, California, native and 2016 Tesoro High School graduate is serving in Japan in the U.S. Navy aboard one of the forward-deployed mine countermeasures ship, USS Patriot. Seaman Ryan Cendejas is an information systems technician aboard the Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship, operating out of Sasebo, Japan. The ship routinely deploys to protect alliances, enhance partnerships, and be ready to respond if a natural disaster occurs in the region. A Navy information systems technician is responsible for electronic mail systems, shipboard control systems, special intelligence (SI) systems. They have a broad range of responsibilities, including network administration, database management and computer hardware and software implementation. Cendejas is proud to serve in the Pacific and fondly recalls memories o f R a n c h o S a n t a M a r g a r i t a . “I learned from my high school music teacher, Mr. Hancock, to treat everybody with respect, to respect other people’s view and ideas,” said Cendajas. “It’s helped me to get used to the climate and working with other people and cultures in the Navy.”

Cendejas thus far is proud of finishing system administrator “C” school. Completing this school will help him learn more about the information systems technology field. The school is rigorous and time consuming which he saw as a challenge. Once complete, Cendejas felt accomplished when finished. He feels he is ready for a successful job in the information systems technology field. Moments like that makes it worth serving around the world ready at all times to defend America’s interests. With more than 50 percent of the world’s shipping tonnage and a third of the world’s crude oil passing through the region, the United States has historic and enduring interests in this part of the world. The Navy’s presence in Sasebo is part of that long-standing commitment, explained Navy officials. With a crew of more than 80, USS Patriot is 224 feet long and weighs approximately 1,300 tons. USS Patriot is one of the Navy’s 11 Avenger-class mine countermeasures ships that are designed to neutralize mines from vital waterways and harbors. There are four minesweepers in Sasebo as part of the forward-deployed mine countermeasures force that are oncall to respond in the event of a mine-

clearing operation in the Indo-Pacific. MCMs in Sasebo routinely operate with allies and partners to build mine countermeasures proficiency and sustain our alliances. “Deployment here is different especially on a mine sweeper, the work is rigorous and demanding,” said Cendejas. “There’s always something that needs to be done on the ship. I enjoy the people I work with because I’ve connected really well with everyone. I’ve gotten to know mostly everyone and learned to respect them. Overall, it’s taught me how to do a job right.” As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied-upon assets, Cendejas and other sailors know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes providing t h e N a v y t h e n a t i o n n e e d s . “Serving in the Navy means serving the country. It’s an honor to serve and give back to the country what it’s given me, freedom and rights,” said Cendejas. “Also, I feel accomplished so far. I would say my work ethic has improved since joining the Navy. It’s set a standard for me as a person to always advance myself and work better, be better.” Seventh Fleet, which is celebrating

WHW Celebrates 25th Anniversary; Raises Over $225,000 At Annual Luncheon And Fashion Show Photos by Kait McKay Nonprofit WHW, hosted 370 supporters, volunteers and community members to celebrate 25 iconic years of “empowering employment success” and raised more than $225,000 during its Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show at the Pasea Hotel & Spa in Huntington Beach.. With the theme of “old Hollywood” style and elegance, the event featured silent and live auctions, a gourmet luncheon, an inspiring presentation from a WHW job seeker and a movie-inspired, “black and white” fashion show with fashions from WHW’s retail store, Deja New, which supports WHW with all income directly helping to provide services for WHW job seekers. WHW provides the unemployed and underemployed the skills and resources they need to get and keep a good job. The program was kicked off by the event chair Karen Conlon, WHW Board Chair Kyle Rowen and WHW CEO Janie Best. WHW client Kimberly Watson also spoke and shared her story. Guests enjoyed an outdoor, ocean-view reception with martini drinks sponsored by Spa Girls Cocktails. Specialty cocktails included The Marilyn Monroe (Spa Girl Pear Vodka Martini Straight Up), The Cary Grant (Spa Girl Cucumber Vodka Martini Straight Up) and The Hollywood (Spa Girl Cucumber Vodka Martini with Lime Juice and Simple Syrup). Within the ballroom, a three-course lunch was served including a grilled iceberg wedge salad (cherry tomatoes, chives, bacon, gorgonzola and toasted walnut cream); broiled spring chicken and potato au gratin or vegan wild mushroom risotto with asparagus ragout for vegetarians; and panna cotta (shortbread cookie, vanilla panna cotta, mango-pineapple compote) for dessert. Live auction items included an Angels Baseball package of four field MVP tickets and VIP parking to a 2018 home game with four passes to view batting practice prior to the game; two suite tickets to the Shakira concert at the Honda Center on August 31, 2018 and two tickets to the Hall & Oates concert on May 6, 2018 with all-inclusive food and beverages for both events; a stay at a six-bedroom, six-bathroom private villa in Los Cabos in a private, gated community with a pool and spa for seven nights; and a Maserati weekend including three days and two nights use of a Maserati donated by Maserati of Newport Beach. The package also includes a two-night stay in an Island Room at the Fashion Island Hotel and a $100 gift card to Five Crowns Restaurant in Corona del Mar. The silent auction included 100 items such as a one-night stay at the Ritz Carlton Rancho Mirage and a two-night, ocean-view stay at Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes. “WHW is absolutely thrilled that our annual luncheon and fashion show raised over $225,000 to support the employment readiness programs offered at WHW!” said WHW CEO Janie Best. “Due to the generosity of many, many sponsors and donors, over 80% of WHW job seekers will get and keep a good job. And that’s the best part of the whole day.” At WHW, 91 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to programs and services, more than 80% of job seekers obtain a job within three months and 90% of those keep that job, which increases their household income by over 300%. Since 1993, WHW has served over 90,000 job seekers with programs including Employment Readiness Workshops, Computer Training, Job Placement Assistance, Employment Retention Assistance and Professional Apparel. WHW has grown from providing 63 women with professional apparel to help prepare them for interviews in 1993 to now serving more than 8,000 job seekers each year and empowering them to navigate a complex job search with a multitude of tools. WHW helps people get and keep good jobs including through educating job seekers on relevant social media strategies, elevator speeches, networking, mock interviews, informational interviews, Skype interviews, business cards, digital resumes, personal branding and marketing strategies that enable a candidate to clearly demonstrate the value they bring to an employer. WHW is a nonprofit organization which provides the unemployed and underemployed the skills and resources they need to get and keep a good job. Since 1993, WHW has served over 90,000 job seekers referred by over 275 partner agencies at no charge. Each year thousands of job seekers participate in programs focused on making them the most marketable candidate for the job they seek. Programs include Employment Readiness Workshops, Computer Training, Job Placement Assistance, Employment Retention Assistance and Professional Apparel. In 2018, WHW is celebrating its 25th anniversary. For more information on WHW, please visit www.whw.org.

May is Declared Ultraviolet (UV) Awareness Month

Prevent Blindness, the nation’s oldest eye health and safety organization, has declared May as Ultraviolet (UV) Awareness Month to help educate the public on the dangers that UV exposure may have on vision. UV damage may cause immediate effects, such as a corneal sunburn (photokeratitis). Long hours on the water, for example, without proper eye protection can cause this problem. UV damage has been linked to the development of macular degeneration, cataract, pterygium (a growth on the white part of the eye) and cancer. According to the World Health Organization, different forms of eye cancer may be associated with life-long exposure to the sun. Melanoma is the most frequent malignant cancer of the eyeball, and a common location for basal cell carcinoma is on the eyelids. Adults and children are at risk from UV damage. However, the risk of sun related eyeproblems is higher for people who: • spend long hours in the sun • have certain retina disorders • had cataract surgery (although some artificial lenses do absorb some UV rays) • are on certain medicines, such as tetracycline, sulfa drugs, birth control pills, diuretics and tranquilizers that increase the eye’s sensitivity to light. When purchasing sunglasses, Prevent Blindness recommends consumers always read labels carefully and only buy sunglasses that clearly state that they block 99 to 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B rays. Sunglasses should be worn in conjunction with a brimmed hat. Wrap-around sunglasses are best. For those participating in outdoor sports activities, Prevent Blindness recommends consulting with an eye care professional on eye protection that both blocks UV as well as protects eyes from injury. Page 16

“Consistently wearing effective UV eye protection is a habit that we should practice year-round, not just in the warm-weather months. By wearing UV-blocking sunglasses and a visor, we can help protect our vision today and for years to come,” said Jeff Todd, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness. For more information on the dangers of UV exposure and how to choose the best UV protection, please visit the Prevent Blindness dedicated Web page at http://www.preventblindness.org/protectyour-eyes-sun or call (800) 331-2020. About Prevent Blindness Founded in 1908, Prevent Blindness is the nation’s leading volunteer eye health and safety organization dedicated to fighting blindness and

saving sight. Focused on promoting a continuum of vision care, Prevent Blindness touches the lives of millions of people each year through public and professional education, advocacy, certified vision screening and training, community and patient service programs and research. These services are made possible through the generous support of the American public. Together with a network of affiliates, Prevent Blindness is committed to eliminating preventable blindness in America. Lyndon B. Johnson’s Texas Getaway Ranch!

American presidents seem to have more than one thing in common: they need to get away and escape from the pressure. The ones from Texas have a penchant for ranches, the more cosmopolitan ones like to travel and the ones who come into the presidency with wealth of their own tend to seek out more elegant retreats - and it helps if you happen to own the best of them. Playing golf has always been a popular presidential stress reliever, for after all, isn’t it more socially acceptable to knock the bejeezus out of a ball than the most obnoxious member of the opposing political party? Taking the time to look back in history can produce interesting facts that bring balance to today’s political chaos. Many past presidential terms were steeped in controversy, and Lyndon B. Johnson, who rose from rural Texas high school teacher to 36th President of the United States after the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963, was no exception. While Johnson’s Great Society initiatives included major civil rights accomplishments, anti-poverty programs and Medicare, his particular onus was the Vietnam War. Johnson was hounded by the press who he felt had started to question him not

as reporters but as prosecutorial lawyers; students were rioting in the streets and he caught flack from every quadrant on almost every move. Johnson surprised almost everyone when he refused to run for reelection in 1968 paving a path for the presidency of Richard Nixon. One week after the assassination of JFK, Johnson purchased 800 acres outside of Johnson City, Texas with spectacular views. Even though his main home was a 330-acre ranch on the Pedernales River in central Texas, which he purchased from his aunt in 1951 while still a senator, his new ranch was intended as a getaway that would insulate him from the press and the pressures of Washington, D.C. His first ranch was where he met with political leaders and world dignitaries, but he laid down the law that there would be no work and no visitors invited to his newly acquired ranch. Now for sale by the artist and his family who currently own the farm, now downsized to 142 acres, the main three-bedroom home is on a hilltop with 360-degree views from its 1,800-foot elevation. The 2,840-square-foot house is finished in stone and cedar and has been

Want to lose weight? Research proves a big breakfast is the first step If you want to lose weight, you’re not alone. More than half of Americans desire to shed pounds, according to Gallup. This goal inspires people to take action in many ways, from increasing exercise to modifying meals. One thing many people do is skip breakfast in order to lower calorie intake. While this may seem like a good idea to lose weight, research proves otherwise. In fact, eating a big breakfast followed by smaller meals throughout the day is the best method for weight loss. A new study in The Journal of Nutrition investigated the relation between meal frequency and timing and changes in body mass index (BMI). The study found that “eating less frequently, no snacking, consuming breakfast and eating the largest meal in the morning may be effective methods for preventing longterm weight gain.” “When you eat your meal matters,” says Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner. “The best way to eat for energy and weight is to eat a big breakfast, smaller lunch and light dinner because it mimics our days’ activities.” Blatner explains that people are typically most active in the beginning of the day and so need the most fuel then. They slow down as the day progresses, and by dinnertime they need less fuel. “But it’s not just about eating

anything in the morning,” she cautions. “It’s important to pick nutrient-dense foods to fuel your day right.” Blatner provides three tips for creating a wholesome breakfast that will give you energy and support your weight-loss goals: 1. Fruits and veggies Wake up your taste buds and give your body important vitamins by eating a rainbow of colorful fruits and veggies. Try shopping the farmers market for locally sourced in-season produce. A quick frittata with egg and chopped veggies or a smoothie bowl topped with fresh fruit will satisfy. If fresh produce isn’t available, frozen has optimum nutrients so it is a smart alternative. 2. Whole grains Make whole grains part of your breakfast and you’ll feel fuller for longer. Oatmeal is a classic wholegrain breakfast option. Use wholegrain pancake mix to whip up some flapjacks. Bake muffins with wholegrain flour. Make cornbread with whole cornmeal. When shopping for cereal or other breakfast products, look at the label to ensure it’s made with whole grains. 3. Proteins Eggs are a great source of protein and nutrients for breakfast, but not all eggs are created equal. Swap out ordinary eggs for Eggland’s Best eggs, and you’ll get great taste and superior nutritional benefits with 10 times more vitamin E, six times more

vitamin D, more than double the omega-3s, more than double vitamin B12 and 25 percent less saturated fat. Short on time in the morning? Try Make Ahead Breakfast Bowls that can be frozen and microwaved in minutes for a satisfying start to your day. Make Ahead Breakfast Bowls Ingredients: 12 Eggland’s Best eggs (large) 2 pounds Yukon gold potatoes, chopped into 1-inch cubes 1 green pepper, seeded then chopped into 1-inch chunks 1 onion, chopped 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon seasoned salt salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 3 green onions, chopped toppings: tortilla chips, salsa, avocado 6 individual-sized containers with lids Preparation: Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. On a large baking sheet, place potatoes, peppers and onions in a single layer. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with seasoned salt and ground black pepper. Toss until evenly coated. Roast for about 30-40 minutes or until potatoes are golden brown and tender, stirring and rotating pan halfway through cooking. Meanwhile, crack Eggland’s Best

eggs into a large bowl, then season with salt and pepper and whisk until smooth. Heat a large skillet over medium heat then spray with nonstick spray and add eggs. Scramble until the eggs are just barely cooked through and still slightly glossy, then scoop onto a plate and set aside. Divide the potatoes and scrambled eggs evenly between the containers then set aside to cool. Once cool, sprinkle with cheese and green onions, then cover and refrigerate. Freeze any portions that aren’t eaten within three days. To reheat from frozen: microwave for 1 1/2 minutes then stir and continue microwaving until food is reheated, stirring between intervals. Top with optional toppings, then serve. Tip: Store in individualized microwave-safe containers with lids to make these bowls ready to reheat and go. - (BPT)

Check off your backyard bucket list: seed, weed and feed From Sunday picnics and impromptu barbecues to games of catch, make your lawn center stage this spring. Everyone longs for a lush, green lawn, but many homeowners aren’t sure how to achieve it. In fact, although 81 percent of Americans do their own lawn care, 69 percent say their lawns could be better, and nearly a third aren’t sure how to grow a healthy lawn, according to a survey by the National Association of Landscape Professionals. A strong, green lawn can give back to you in so many ways and getting there is easier than you think. The lawn health experts at Scotts(R) say the keys to a great lawn are seed, weed and feed. Seed Did winter do a number on your lawn? Heavy foot traffic, plows, snow shovels and salt can damage your turf, and after the first melt visible dirt spots and dead zones may appear. When spring temperatures reach 60 degrees or higher, seeds will germinate best and it’s time to repair winter damage. Patch and repair your lawn to fill in bare spots, help crowd out weeds and strengthen your grass to help withstand heat and drought. Start

by removing debris and dead grass in the surrounding area, and loosen hard soil, this will help grass seedlings take root. Evenly apply a quality seed, like Scotts(R) EZ Seed(R), so the bare area is mostly covered, but bare ground is still visible. Be sure to only apply the recommended amount so that seedlings have enough space to access water and nutrients. Scotts(R) EZ Seed(R) is a combination of fertilizer, grass seed and super absorbent mulch that is guaranteed to grow grass anywhere with proper care, whether on a hill or slope, or in a densely-shaded area. Weed Preserve your healthy and beautiful lawn by keeping it free of weeds. Common weeds like dandelions and clover can choke out healthy grass. Therefore, it’s important to address weeds in spring so they won’t have a chance to thrive in summer. Removing weeds can be a challenge, especially if any roots are left behind as they can quickly grow into a new plant. Get rid of weeds by using a weed-control product like the improved Scotts(R) Turf Builder(R) Weed & Feed. It is formulated with up to two times more powerful control

of dandelions and clover compared to the previous formula, so it kills weeds and feeds grass to make it green and thick. Feed Continuing to feed your established lawn is critical to its nutrition and overall success. Your lawn requires feeding about every six weeks, and its nutritional needs will vary throughout the season. Choosing the right food at the right time can help ensure your lawn stays thick and green all spring and summer. For example, if your yard needs a boost towards the end of spring use Scotts(R) Green Max(RM) Lawn Food, it provides your

lawn with essential nutrients, like iron, that give grass its rich green color in just three days. No two lawns are alike. A number of factors including where you live or whether you have a sunny or shady backyard affect how to treat your grass. Not sure which products are right? Download the MyLawn app from Scotts(R) for a personalized care plan that will help you achieve your desired results. To make the most out of your green space, visit www.scotts.com for inspiration and information on lawn care products. - (BPT)

Spring into warmer months with a picnic spread made from the heart This time of year, the urge to go outside increases by the day. There’s more sunlight, birds are chirping and, in some lucky parts of the nation, flowers might even be in bloom. What better way to welcome spring than with a picnic prepared from the heart, complete with homemade breads and baked goods made from scratch? Whether you’re celebrating a spring holiday or birthday, looking for a new idea for date night or just want an excuse to relax on a lazy Sunday afternoon, these tips will equip you for a picnic that’s sure to please. Location, location, location The wonderful thing about picnics is that they can be enjoyed just about anywhere. Whether you want to take in your own backyard, visit a favorite park in your neighborhood or town or escape to a cherished remote spot that is secret to you, picnics allow you to make your meals extra special as you surround yourself in nature. Spring showers got you down? Prepare for summer by transforming your living room into an indoor picnic space. Lay out a blanket, whip up a delicious spread, pick up some flowers, grab your favorite board games and make a day of it. You’ll forget the gray weather in no time. A cause to celebrate Warmer temperatures are cause for celebration alone, but the spring season is also filled with festive holidays like Easter and Mother’s Day. This Easter, while the kids run

through the yard on the hunt for Easter eggs, adults can lounge on picnic blankets and enjoy tasty traditional Easter treats, like homemade hot cross buns. When it comes time to show Mom she’s special (and every day of the year, of course), change up the usual Mother’s Day breakfast in bed or brunch plans with an indoor or outdoor brunch picnic, complete with all of her favorite foods. Enjoying fresh flowers and homemade cinnamon rolls or coffee cake while surrounded by her favorite people will make it a day to remember. Plus, who really wants crumbs in their comforter? Picnics are also a great way to celebrate a spring birthday in the park. Or, for a new twist on your next date night, plan a romantic picnic dinner spread somewhere special, or right out your own back door. The food: The reason we picnic Whether a brunch, lunch or dinner picnic, food is always the star of the show; it’s the reason to own a picnic basket and the lovely accoutrements. For your next picnic, no matter the occasion, make it a priority to bake something from the heart. Fleischmann’s Yeast can be used for a variety of everyday and seasonal recipes, and can help you plan the perfect picnic. Visit BreadWorld. com for recipe inspiration and tips for beginners and seasoned bakers alike, including pointers like how to save time by making your dough the

night before. As your oven works its magic, the smell of made-fromscratch baked goods is sure to get everyone excited to start the picnic party. From Hot Cross Buns or an Easter Egg Nest for Easter to Beginner’s Frosted Cinnamon Rolls or Strawberries and Cream Coffee Cake for a Mother’s Day picnic, a homemade treat makes every holiday complete. And if you’re looking for a staple for any occasion, French Bread is guaranteed to impress your picnic guests. Plus, you’ll be joining the ranks of those across the country raving about the health and taste benefits of homemade artisanal bread. So roll up your sleeves and start baking with yeast - it’s easier than you might think and the results will add an extra “wow” factor to your thoughtful picnic spread. Follow the recipe below to build a delicious foundation for your perfect picnic sandwich. French Bread Ingredients 1 3/4 cups warm water (100 to 110 degrees F) 2 envelopes Fleischmann’s Active Dry Yeast 1 tablespoon Mazola Corn Oil 2 teaspoons salt 5 to 5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour cornmeal 1 egg white beaten with 1 tablespoon water Directions

Place water in large, warm bowl. Sprinkle in yeast; stir until dissolved. Stir in oil, salt and enough flour to make a soft dough. Knead on floured surface until smooth and elastic, about six to eight minutes. Place in greased bowl, turning to grease top. Cover; let rise in warm draft-free place until doubled in size, about 30 to 45 minutes. Punch dough down. On floured surface, divide dough in half; roll to 15x10-inch ovals. Roll up from long ends to make loaves. Pinch seams and ends to seal; taper ends. Place, seam sides down, on large greased baking sheet sprinkled with cornmeal. Cover; let rise in warm draft-free place until doubled in size, about 30 to 45 minutes. Brush with egg white mixture. With a sharp knife, make four or five diagonal cuts (1/4-inch deep), on top of each loaf. Bake in a preheated 400 degree F oven for 25 minutes, or until done. For crispier crusts, brush two more times with egg white mixture, after 15 and 20 minutes of baking time. Remove from sheet and cool on wire rack. - (BPT)

Tips to turn your home into your own beauty salon Giving yourself a professionallooking beauty makeover can be as simple as looking around your house. Whether it’s in your bathroom or your laundry room, all sorts of products already in your home can be repurposed to easily and quickly help you create this season’s on-trend looks from head to toe. Here are some tips to get you started. * Starting from the top ... no time for a shower? Grab a dryer sheet from your laundry room and rub it on your head to tame fly-aways while giving your hair a fresh scent. A dime-sized amount of hand or body lotion will also do the trick if you rub it lightly onto problem spots. * Q-tips cotton swabs can be used for creating a variety of on-trend beauty looks and are an easy and hygienic alternative to expensive makeup brushes. For special occasions, opt for metallic bronzy, gold tones on top of dark smoky eyes and bold lips. After applying your eye shadow and lipstick, use the cotton swab to dab loose pigment in a bronzy shade onto the inner corners of your eyes and in the center of your lips.- The subtle hints of gold will balance each other while giving you an immediate glammed up look. * Give those cotton swabs double duty for a manicure worth showing off. First, rub toothpaste on your Page 24

nails to remove stains and add shine before using remover on the nail plate. Whether it’s applying a bold, seasonal color or a nail art design, the next step is up to you. Celebrity nail technician Kimmie Kyees, whose clients include today’s hottest pop stars and actresses, has a variety of tips for creating unique, DIY nail art, starting with having the right tools on hand. “Not all cotton swabs are created equal so I always make sure I have plenty of Q-tips Precision Tips,” says Kyees. “They are the best quality with 100 percent cotton and the pointed ends are perfect for precise application. I use one end to apply or create a cool design and the other for cuticle clean-up, they are genius!” One of the easiest and most current trends is negative space. Apply a coat of bold, stylish nail polish such as oxblood to your nails. While nails are still semi-wet and tacky, dip the pointed end of your cotton swab in remover and precisely remove a section of the polish to create empty, negative space on the nail plate. A favorite is the “inverted V-shaped mani” with empty space in the shape of a “V” at the bottom of the nail, or you can come up with your own design, such as horizontal lines or a moon. Make sure to apply a thin layer of a clear top coat to seal the manicure in place.

The Coto de Caza News

* Keep your perfect pout in place. Hold a tissue over your lips and lightly dust translucent powder over the tissue. This will help the color last from day to night. * Lipstick can equal blush.- When you’re in a bind, rub some lipstick between your fingers to warm it up, then lightly smooth onto your cheeks in an upward motion. Voila, rosy cheeks that perfectly complement your lips. Make sure you don’t

apply the color too low or under the cheekbones. Place the color just a bit higher than you might think so it runs across the tops of your cheekbones and fades into your skin about an inch from your hairline. skin care trends for a naturally glowing look

Looking to achieve naturally glowing skin, but have no clue where to begin? You are not alone. With today’s deluge of complex beauty treatments and seemingly endless beauty aisles, it’s time to simplify. Dr. Ellen Marmur, author of Simple Skin Beauty and spokesperson for Dove Advance Care Deodorant, helps us cut through the clutter with these dermatologist approved skin care trends. Natural Skin Beauty: In my practice, I see more and more women embracing a natural look when it comes to their beauty routine - limiting the amount of makeup and focusing intently on skin care. When it comes to achieving a naturally glowing look, my mantra is “protect, enhance and troubleshoot.” Protection begins with regularly cleansing the skin and replenishing its moisture to restore balance. Enhancing is where we get to embellish our best features by evening the skin tone using a light tinted powder and playing up the natural highlights of our face. For trouble spots, it’s important to treat only the affected area with a dermatologist recommended or prescribed treatment. Multi-Tasking Beauty Products: In a world where every minute counts, it’s not surprising that women are continually looking for ways to

streamline their morning routines. With advances in skin care technology, multi-tasking beauty products are rapidly increasing in popularity. These products are not only limited to makeup and moisturizers; they have now expanded into other categories such as deodorant. We do not always think of our underarms as being beautiful, but it’s an area that requires special attention and care. I suggest using New Dove Advanced Care Anti-Perspirant/Deodorant, which is the only deodorant formulated with NutriumMoisture to provide softer,

smoother armpits in just three days. Plus, it offers 48-hour odor and wetness protection for confidence all-day long. Sunscreen Gets Glam: For years you have heard about the importance of sunscreen, but with natural skin beauty on the rise, it has now taken center stage. Sun protection is important 365 days a year to help keep wrinkles and discoloration at bay. Depending on how you apply your sunscreen, you may be getting only a fraction of the protection listed on the bottle. Therefore, I recommend

women opt for higher SPF protection - between SPF 30 and SPF 50 - and reapply every two hours or even more frequently when in direct sunlight, swimming or working out. Skin care doesn’t have to be complicated. These dermatologist approved beauty trends from Dr. Marmur will help you achieve better results with less hassle and confusion. Visit Dove.com for more information on New Dove Advanced Care Anti-Perspirant/Deodorant with NutriumMoisture.

Hosting a Party? Get the Guests Involved Hosting dinner parties, brunches and events should be fun, but there’s often so much to do that fun goes off the menu. By getting the guests involved, you can host a gathering and still have a good time. Here are some tips for creating your own enjoyable and unforgettable gathering. Make it potluck Keep things simple and cut down on party prep time by asking guests to contribute a dish. Assign appetizers, salads and sides to your guests so that all you will need to prepare is the main dish. Perhaps ask some guests to contribute to the beverage selection as well. Ensure that guests can reach food items on the buffet by propping up dishes with elevated platforms like tiered platters or cake stands. For an inexpensive solution, place a bowl upside down and cover with a vibrant or patterned cloth napkin before setting the food on top. Stock the beverage bar Be sure to designate an area for beverages and refreshments. Place pitchers of ice water flavored with strawberries or cucumbers for guests to enjoy throughout the event. Set out a Keurig Single-Cup Brewer with

an assortment of Starbucks Coffee K-Cup Packs so guests can brew their favorite premium coffee. “Make sure your guests have everything they need to ‘personalize’ their after-dinner coffee by providing creative mix-ins for their individual cup. Flavored syrups like vanilla, hazelnut, and peppermint are always a hit, as well as fun toppings like ground cinnamon, chocolate shavings, caramel and whipped cream,” says Jenn Sbranti, Founder of Hostess with the Mostess. “For the finishing touch, include a few clever ‘stir stick’ garnishes – such as cinnamon sticks, rock candy, and tall pirouette cookies.” Set up interactive desserts Create a self-serve station with ingredients for do-it-yourself desserts. Update a classic idea like an ice cream sundae bar by offering guests frozen yogurt and fresh fruit instead so they can create healthy parfaits. Another creative idea would be setting up a sweet and savory popcorn station, where guests can fill up small lunch sacks or gift bags with their favorite flavored popcorn and personal toppings. Prepare the sugary and savory popcorn bases (recipes available online) or buy

premade sweetened and buttery popcorn. Then set out assorted toppings for the choosing – savory options could include truffle oil, grated Parmesan, sea salt, dried herbs, and dry ranch or taco seasoning; for the sweet tooth, offer cocoa mix, apple pie spice, chocolate or peanut butter candies, and toffee-coated peanuts. Send guests home with leftovers Finally make post-party cleanup easier on yourself by offering guests leftovers at the end of the night.

Purchase paper food containers beforehand so everyone can help themselves to their favorite foods to take home. So whether you’re planning a big dinner party or an intimate brunch, remember that sharing the host responsibilities and introducing DIY aspects to the occasion lets you reduce your own stress and enjoy more time with your guests.

Nick Haness Pilots Skyhawk and Cosmeo to the Top Two Prizes in the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby

Nick Haness with Skyhawk and Cosmeo with Laura Wasserman, Melissa Brandes and Archie Cox Photos by Captured Moment Friday morning, the Showpark Ranch & Coast Classic kicked off with 25 high performance hunters galloping on the grass in the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby. The class culminated with a double win for owner Laura Wasserman and rider Nick Haness, with champion honors going to Skyhawk and second place to Cosmeo. After picking up both first and second in the classic round, aboard Skyhawk and Cosmeo respectively, Haness maintained his lead with solid second round scores for the one-two victory. Two panels judged the class, the first Jimmy Lee and Jimmy Clapperton and the second Don Stewart Jr. (on his birthday nonetheless!) and Katherine Griffiths. The course, designed by Thomas Hern of Plymouth, Massachusetts, included two high options, a single oxer on a hill, and a delicate two-stride combination. For those who advanced to the handy round, another two high options and a hand gallop played a role in the scoring. Taking both higher options and tight inside turns, Haness used the track to his advantage, earning handy scores of 9 from each judging

panel, which secured his lead. With Skyhawk’s Derby rider, John French, on the injury list, Haness just stepped into the role this week. He has watched and competed against the talented gelding in numerous derbies. “I’m sorry John is hurt and wish him a speedy recovery,” said Haness. “Skyhawk is lovely to ride. He’s very brave and today I could feel that he was in it to win it.” Along with ribbons and a USHJA cooler and halter, the pair was awarded a pair of Roeckl Sports riding gloves and an EquiFit hunter girth. Sponsored awards also went out to many of the riders and contributors to recognize their outstanding performances. Laura Wasserman received the Balmoral Winning Owner Award, and trainer Archie Cox was the Blue Ribbon Blankets Winning Trainer. Rider Augusta Iwasaki earned the The Plaid Horse Highest Scoring Junior Rider Award, with two rides in the top twelve and a fourth place finish aboard Vanderpump. Megan Kerpsack took home the One K Helmets Highest Scoring Amateur Rider Award on her mount Calandra. Sergio Macias Valdez was

recognized for his excellence in grooming with the Makoto Farms Groom’s Award for Best Turned Out Horse, partnered with Geneve, owned by Amy Concha, and ridden to a fifth place finish by Jenny Karazissis. The $5,000 1.35-1.40m Interactive Mortgage Horse 10&U Futurity and $60,000 1.50m Grand Prix of California, presented by EQU Lifestyle Boutique, will highlight the Grand Prix Field on Saturday. Numerous SmartPak High Score and Grand Champion Awards will be presented on Sunday as the Ranch

& Coast Classic comes to a close. Walking: the old way to get fit is new again

With so many fitness trends, you might not think of walking as good exercise. If you’re not thrusting a kettlebell over your head, pushing a tractor trailer tire or shaking your hips to a Top 40 dance beat in a scheduled group class, you’re not cutting it, right? Well, not so fast. Walking is actually a great way to get in shape. In fact, if you walk often enough and fast enough, the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other can satisfy your body’s daily requirement for aerobic activity. Walking may just seem like an old method of exercise; it certainly is tried and true. But quite the opposite of outdated, it seems to be making a resurgence in the health, fitness and medical worlds as a low-cost solution to the nation’s ongoing health care crisis. Renowned medical expert Dr. Andrew Weil is an advocate of walking as a crucial method of preventative care. He advocates walking as a low-risk means to optimum health. “With a consistent, brisk walking routine, you can boost your immune system, help manage weight, improve your mood and help ease depression, as well as improve cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure and prevent osteoporosis,” says Weil. “The additional benefits may be endless.” Regarded as a leader in the world of integrative medicine, Weil is part of a panel of experts with Vionic Innovation Lab, an innovative footwear company leading the way for proper foot health and active lifestyle solutions. With new products

such as the Zen walking shoe, Vionic offers podiatrist-designed technology in contemporary styles, providing an innovative support for anyone in need of a supportive shoe or sandal to start or improve her walking routine. The walking movement is growing: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that between 2005 and 2010, the number of adults who walked for 10 minutes or more at least once a week rose from 56 to 62 percent - an increase of almost 20 million people. Need more convincing reasons to walk onto the bandwagon? Here’s why walking for exercise is so ideal: * Walking is what your body is designed to do. *Among all forms of aerobic exercise, walking carries the least risk of injury. * You can walk almost anywhere, any time. * Nearly everyone can walk, and it’s something you can do throughout your life. * It’s free. * There’s no special skill, training, or equipment needed - all you need is the right footwear. The buzz about walking has even reached the stars. Fitness trainer to celebrities such as Kate Walsh, Pink and Stacey Kiebler, Juliet Kaska has been known to start many of her high-profile clientele with a consistent walking routine. Also contributing to the Vionic Innovation lab as a lifestyle expert, Kaska recommends walking as a great baseline for any fitness program, but

reminds her followers to “invest in a good pair of walking shoes. They will do wonders for your posture and joints. Minimizing the impact of each step. Look for lightweight flexible shoes and be sure to replace them often, especially if you’re walking every day.” As you develop your walking program, set your own pace. As a general rule, taking 10,000 steps a day is a great goal for improving your overall physical, emotional and mental fitness. But the journey, as they say, begins with a single step. There’s no better time than now to begin.

Color your world: Quick, easy ways to brighten decor and wardrobe When spring and summer arrive, Mother Nature shows off her decorating skills, bringing vibrant color to the outdoors. The bounty of hues outside can inspire homeowners to liven up their own environments, too. Enjoying the colors of nature is free to all, and brightening your indoor environment and your wardrobe doesn’t have to cost a bundle, either. “Trends in fashion, design and pop culture are taking on more global influence, and of course, one thing that’s always in style is color,” says Brad Goreski, celebrity stylist and Post-it Brand Color Ambassador. Try these inexpensive, easy ways to bring color into your home, office or personal look this season. Brighten your wardrobe Color can be intimidating. Many of us tend to fall into a pattern of buying clothes in colors that we feel look good on us, and avoiding anything new that might be a fashion risk. Trying a new color, though, is a great way to update a wardrobe and liberate your color sense. Not sure where to begin? Goreski recommends “color blocking” blending two main colors in an outfit - as a can’t-miss tactic for brightening your outfit. Color blocking allows you to pair two bright colors for an upbeat look while avoiding the color clash that so many people fear. Page 28

“Stick with two colors that work well together,” Goreski advises. “Avoid too many different colors. Two colors work, but three or four would be too much and you’ll end up looking like a box of crayons.” For example, try a blouse in one color and a skirt in another. Then, continue those colors in your accessories. Elevate your office environment “Whether you have a home office or work outside the home, your office is where you get business done,” Goreski says. “But the business world is increasingly global in nature, and the colors in your office can be as well.” A quick, easy and cost-effective way to add color and organization to your environment is to introduce the Post-it Brand Colors of the World collection to your office. Four unique color palettes feature hues inspired by four global destinations, including New York City, Mykonos, Rio de Janeiro and Bangkok. Each palette draws on the trends, styles and cultures of the locations to add inspiring color to this office and organization staple. “The colors in this Post-it Brand collection transport you to new places, spark new ideas and allow you to express your personality and style - all while staying organized,”

Goreski says. More hues for home When the weather warms, it’s the perfect time to add color to your home decor. You can go as bold or traditional as your comfort level allows and still infuse a brighter, fresher feeling. Start by painting any room in which you want to create a new look. Choose a hue that speaks to your sense of style and fits the function of the room. For example, blues and greens are restive for bedroom decor, while yellows and reds impart energy to busy kitchens. If committing to a complete color change is uncomfortable for you, try creating an accent wall in a bright

color and paint the other three walls in a neutral hue - this can be a great compromise. Continue the theme of the accent wall throughout the rest of the room with accessories such as pillows, throws, rugs and lamp shades in the same hue or color family. In the same vein, updating accessories and window treatments can be a cost-effective, low-fear way to infuse new color into a room. By adding pops of color in items that are easy to change, you eliminate the risk of committing to a major change, and you also create flexibility to change a room’s look with each change in season.

You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information.
