Wear a poppy this National Poppy Day For many Americans, it starts with wearing the Millions of people worldwide wear the red poppy
poppy on National Poppy Day, an annual tribute to the price of freedom. This year, National Poppy Day is May 25. For Ann Fournier, it starts with a train ride. She has taken the same train at 5 a.m. and 4:50 p.m. daily for 30 years. She spends her hour-long commutes piecing together tiny petals of red crepe paper to assemble poppies to support veterans. Fournier’s work has made her a symbol on the train. Known as the “Poppy Lady,” she has created 100,000 poppies each year over several decades. Her commitment began as a tribute to her brothers, who served during Vietnam, but has continued as a way to honor each veteran and civilian she has met on her ride to the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) state headquarters in Boston. “The conductor saves a seat with a table for me every day,” says Fournier, who serves as ALA Department of Massachusetts secretary/executive director. “He’s a veteran as well. Sometimes he sits with me to help. Sometimes strangers ask me what I’m doing. But the best moments happen when a veteran sits down or thanks me. I don’t do it for the thanks; I do it because I can, and these little red flowers are a way to help those in need. Our veterans don’t get enough of anything.” The red poppy holds great meaning for veterans all over the world. After the battles of World War I, the blood-red poppy flourished in France and Belgium when battlefields became burial grounds. The red flowers suddenly bloomed among the newly dug gravesites of fallen service members, turning the new graveyards into fields of red. Today, the poppy is a symbol of sacrifices made from WWI to today’s war on terror.
as a call to honor living veterans and those who lost their lives. The tradition can be traced back to 1918 when Moina Michael popularized the idea of wearing a poppy flower in memory of the military lives lost in WWI. She drew inspiration from the poem In Flanders Fields, written by WWI Col. John McCrae as he gazed at the rows and rows of graves where his comrades had been recently buried. In the decades that followed, poppies have been worn, displayed and distributed for fundraising efforts for veterans service organizations around the world. The American Legion Family is the driving force behind the now trademarked National Poppy Day because of its support for veterans and longstanding connection to the poppy flower. In the early 1920s, the Legion Family adopted the poppy as its official memorial flower to pay homage to the battlefields of WWI. Now, it is the Family’s mission to support the military community by promoting the significance of the flower and the meaning behind it. Members and volunteers connected to the ALA, one of the nation’s most prominent supporters of veterans’ rights, leverage the poppy in service to the veteran community through Poppy Day distributions and outreach. ALA volunteers hand out red paper or fabric poppies in exchange for donations that go directly to support veterans. Many of those poppies are made by hospitalized and disabled veterans as a form of rehabilitation and a source of income through this ALA program. In 2017, ALA members throughout the U.S. distributed nearly 6 million poppies or poppy items and raised $3.9 million in donations that went
Ann Fournier, the “Poppy Lady” directly to help veterans, military and their families. “This flower is personal to me,” says Fournier. “Because of it, I’ve been able to share stories about our veterans and the ALA’s work. I’ve also been able to explain that helping a veteran can be as simple as donating money in exchange for a poppy or as committed as making 100,000 poppies each year. It’s about what you can do to help.” Donning a poppy this National Poppy Day and every day is one simple way to show gratitude for a community that has given its lives to protect ours. By Patti Winters The United States has a rich history, and Memorial Day is one of the holidays originated to show our respect for those who have died for it and the many freedoms we enjoy on a daily basis. Memorial Day (originally called Decoration Day) was officially proclaimed in 1868 by General John Logan, and first observed on May 30, 1868 by placing flowers on graves of Civil War soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. Since 1971, Memorial Day has been celebrated on the last Monday of May, to allow for a three day Memorial Day Weekend. Discuss American history with your family. We get so busy with our day to day lives that we often forget to slow
down and really think about the reason our national holidays were started. It is important to discuss the pride we have in our country and how we appreciate those that came before us, especially with our children. Buy a poppy from the VFW. Beginning in 1922 the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) took a Dutch and French tradition and began to sell poppies nationally, to raise money for veterans in need. Today these poppies are made my disabled veterans and sold each Memorial Day Weekend. Participate in the “National Moment of Remembrance”, which was started in 2000. This is a resolution asks American citizens to stop anything they may be doing at 3 p.m. local time, and ob-
serve a moment of silence. Show respect for fallen war veterans. Visit cemeteries or war memorials to show your respect. Lay flowers or place flags as a remembrance to what the war veteran has given for his or her country. Many cemeteries have fallen war veterans whose family no longer lives close by. You can “adopt” these grave sites to show that their service has not been forgotten. Spend quality time with your family and enjoy (and appreciate) the freedom that others have given their lives for. Most cities will have parades and other celebrations. If there isn’t a formal activity that you’re interested in, think of having a picnic or get together with family and friends.

Elks celebrated Mother’s Day with a fabulous buffet for members and families By Andy Costello It was a special day for moms at the Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge. The annual event has grown in popularity and is held for members and their guests. Next to honoring the mothers, the star of the show was the lavish buffet with fresh fruit, a carving station - pork loin & prime rib, bacon & sausage, eggs benedict, biscuits and gravy, waffles with strawberries & whip cream, and omelets made to order. There were also other breakfast pastries and desserts and coffee, tea and orange juice. Carnations were handed to all the mothers and the center pieces (floral wicker purses with potted mini rose plants) were raffled off. Mother’s Day cards were given to the children so they could color a special Mother’s Day card for mom. There was also a complimentary glass of champagne for the Mothers. The brunch was a big success thanks to all who attended and all the wonderful members who volunteered as helpers. Event Chairman Cindy Wooten thanked all of those members who helped with the set up and those that helped cook and serve the Brunch:
ER Mike Klinger, Phil Jimenez, Dave and Cheryl Tucker, Sandy and Jack Jacobs, Rich and Ria Capotosta, Harvey and Pat Ohman, Margie Paul, Irene Romero, Pam Mackey, Steve Cagnacci and Barbara Coppola, Gail Patti, Jamie Camunas, Vicki Long, Dennis Boelts, John Fietz, Kevin Lindley, Pam Mackey, Julie Thomas, Paul Nagi, Dave Perry, Rick Lambert, Pam Mackey, and Barbara King. Chairman Wooten said she was amazed at all the love and support provided during the planning, the set up and on the day of the event. She said, “I truly thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for all their support and their help to insure that our Mother’s Day Brunch was a success.” Lodge #2444 is celebrating 49 years of service to Saddleback Valley Communities. By Derrick Riches It’s called the unofficial start of summer and this Memorial Day gives you the opportunity to break out the grill or smoker to start the summer right. These recipes were the most popular for Memorial Day last year and they are a great start to your summer barbecue season.
Kansas City Rib Rub In Kansas City they know BBQ ribs. This is the barbecue rub recipe for traditional Kansas City-Style Ribs. Finish these ribs off with a good barbecue sauce and you’ll have a fantastic meal. Prep Time: 10 minutes Total Time: 10 minutes Yield: Makes a little more than 1 cup Ingredients: 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup paprika 1 tablespoon black pepper 1 tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon chili powder 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon onion powder 1 teaspoon cayenne Preparation: Combine all ingredients together and transfer to an air tight container. Maybe stored up to six months.
Fresh Corn on the Cob This is the general method for grilling corn on the cob. Remember not to remove the husks, they will hold in the moisture and keep the corn from burning. You might want to pull out as much silk as you can before hand Prep Time: 30 minutes Cook Time: 15 minutes Total Time: 45 minutes Ingredients: Page 10

Remove from water and pull down husks carefully -- DO NOT REMOVE -- and coat with herbal butter (made from adding your favorite fresh herbs to softened butter). Put the husks back up covering the corn and tie with a thin piece of husk at the top. Place on grill for about 15 minutes, turning.
BBQ Beef Ribs This is an easy way to prepare delicious, sticky beef ribs on your grill. Remember that the secret to indirect grilling is to make sure that the food doesn’t get any direct heat at all. You will need to rotate the ribs occasionally to evenly cook them. Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 3 hours, 30 minutes Total Time: 3 hours, 50 minutes Yield: Serves 4 Ingredients: 4 to 5 pounds beef back ribs (about 10 ribs) 1/2 cup ketchup 1/2 cup honey 1 4 ounce can green chilies, diced 1 large onion, chopped 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon cayenne 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon dry mustard Preparation: Trim excess fat from beef ribs. Combine salt, pepper and cayenne. Rub over the ribs. Preheat grill and prepare for indirect grilling with a drip pan. Place ribs on grill over drip pan and close the lid. Cook for about 3 to 3 1/2 hours over a medium low, indirect heat (try to keep the temperature under 265 degrees F.). Carly Anthony and Chacco Claim the Prize in the $60,000 Grand Prix of California, presented by Equ Lifestyle Boutique
Carly Anthony and Chacco with Monica Ward, Simone Gauci and Lauren Davis from Equ Lifestyle Boutique, Melissa Brandes and Robert Ridland Photos by Captured Moment The $60,000 Grand Prix of California, presented by Equ Lifestyle Boutique, was one of those rare classes where the best score in the first round could not be matched, so the ribbons were awarded without a jump-off. Carly Anthony and her mount Chacco, owned by Neil Jones Equestrian Inc, finished with one time fault for the win. Richard Spooner and Rancho Corazon LLC’s Quirado RC were the only other pair to keep all rails in the cups, and finished in second place with three on the clock. Formulated by the internationallyacclaimed Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela, the course took advantage of the Showpark Grand Prix Field’s size while keeping a tight time allowed of 83 seconds. Riders faced two tricky lines up the diagonals, the first a two-stride combination to a delicate vertical and the second a wide oxer leading into two consecutive onestrides, which when ridden carefully would cost time on the clock. “The time was tight,” said runnerup and grand prix veteran Richard Spooner. “It’s probably been ten years since I’ve been in a class that didn’t go to a jump-off round. That doesn’t
happen very often.” Nonetheless, Anthony was proud to have ridden Chacco to an almost fault-free round, leaving all the jumps in the cups and stopping the clock just .23 seconds over the time allowed. The young professional was grateful for the opportunity to challenge herself as a rider. “This entire week, Leopoldo has been setting courses that were short on time and a bit technical, and that’s how we had to ride it today,” she noted. Anthony and Chacco have been partners since the beginning of the year, and she speaks highly of the gelding. “Chacco is a sweet and kindhearted horse, he really wants to do a good job every day. No matter the distance, he will try his best to have a clean round.” During the ribbon ceremony, Blenheim EquiSports also celebrated longtime employee and friend, Nani Luebke, as she retires as Awards Coordinator after eighteen years. Her tireless attention to detail and hard work has played a significant role in the success of the shows over the years. The Interactive Mortgage Horses 10 & Under Futurity Classic The excitement began before
the Grand Prix, with Jason McArdle and Fairbanks Valley Farm’s Elicole claiming a victory in the $5,000 Interactive Mortgage Horses 10 & Under Futurity Classic. Of the ten clear horse and rider combinations from round one, Jason and Elicole were fastest in the jump-off with a time of 38.25. McArdle was determined, taking quick inside turns and galloping between jumps to shave seconds off the clock. Keri Potter and Jiminy Cricket were the closest to catching him in 40.40s for second place.
Blenheim EquiSports, an equestrian event management company based in San Juan Capistrano, CA, produces events in three locations: San Juan Capistrano, Del Mar and Las Vegas, NV. The events include USEF “Premier” rated hunter-jumper shows featuring multiple grand prix events, a Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ North American League event, USHJA International Hunter Derbies, Pony Finals, Medal Finals and more. Heritage Pointe Luncheon, Fashion Show raises $1.5 million for those in need
A sold-out crowd of over 400 guests attended Heritage Pointe’s 28th Annual Spring Luncheon, Fashion Show, and Shopping Boutique at the Irvine Marriott Hotel. Co-chaired by Donna Markovitz and Gail Taleisnik, event featured a high-energy Fashion Show produced by SusanStein Style. Susan Stein is well-known in the fashion industry and is the Creative Producer and Director of the acclaimed El Paseo Fashion Week in Palm Desert, California, which just celebrated its 12th year. She currently serves as Fashion and Scene Editor for Palm Springs Life Magazine. “We both enjoyed Co-chairing Heritage Pointe’s terrific Spring Luncheon,” stated Gail Taleisnik and Donna Markovitz. “This has become an annual tradition, and we are delighted it was sold out again this year, resulting in tremendous community support,” they continued. The Shopping Boutique showcased over 30 vendors displaying clothing, handbags, jewelry, giftwares, home accessories, and much more. Some of the vendors participating at this year’s luncheon included Sassy Chic, Classy Bag Lady, Designer Details, Art Couture, Sheet Guys, Kiki Bean PJ’s, Gourmet Blends, The Treasured Accessory, Hana’s Fashions, Jacqueline B, Pegboard Highway, Ronelle Design Jewelry, Shakeels Concepts, Shelley’s Fashions, Susie O’s and Borrowed Bling. A percentage of Boutique sales were donated to the Heritage Fund (formerly named the Resident Assistance Fund) which helps seniors in financial need to live at Heritage Pointe surrounded by comfort, security, and love. Featuring an elegant black and gold color scheme, luncheon tables were adorned with crisp white orchid plants donated by My Mother Loved Flowers. Guests feasted on a scrumptious luncheon menu of Orange Fennel Roasted Cod with almonds, raisins, and mint relish accompanied with jasmine rice and seasonal vegetables, or a delicious Butternut Squash with roasted red peppers, spinach, asparagus and carrots with a Balsamic glaze. The piece de resistance was the dessert consisting of a combination of lemon tarts and chocolate Marquise. “The significance of this event is our community coming together to support our seniors at Heritage Pointe, which enables us to provide the highest quality of care facilities, amenities, and the best quality of life,” stated Mike Silverman, CEO of Heritage Pointe. The Runway Fashion Show featured collections from Grayse of Fashion Island and formal custom-made attire from Bohimi Couture of Palm Desert, whose wedding gown finale stole the show! Owners of Grayse, Marie and Kelly Gray, were on hand to present their Collection and give all attendees a $ 100 gift certificate to be used at their “pop up store” at the event or at any of their stores following the event. Grayse is a lifestyle brand designed by Kelly and Marie Gay. This is the Gray’s first time collaborating since their departure from St. John Knits over a decade ago. The mother-daughter duo started Grayse in 2013 as a fun project which grew into a full collection within a year. By 2014, the Grays opened their first retail boutique in Palm Desert, followed by two more retail locations. The mood that defines the Grayse Collecton is “sexy, glamorous, and sophisticated.” The Collection is composed of exquisite hand-crafted leather and tulle jackets, striking position prints, and extraordinary sequin pieces. “Heritage Pointe is appreciative of having the community join together in celebration of this fabulous annual event,” stated Beth Slavin, Director of Philanthropy at Heritage Pointe. “The uniqueness of combining a major Fashion Show with the iconic Marie and Kelly Gray, along with our extensive shopping boutique and elegant luncheon, has awarded Heritage Pointe a place on Orange County’s social calendar that draws men and women throughout the county,” Slavin continued. Voted “Best in Orange County for Senior Living Communities” by the OC Register, Heritage Pointe is a nonprofit 501 (c) 3, 225 resident community in Mission Viejo, California, providing independent, assisted, and memory care services for the elderly, while incorporating Jewish traditions and lifestyles. Offering specialized social, cultural, religious, and educational activities for its residents. Contributions from donors and fundraising activities assist Heritage Pointe in providing nearly $1.5 million annually in assistance to residents who are in financial need. Heritage Pointe’s vision is simple, to foster an exceptional environment based in Jewish values where all community members - including seniors, their families, and volunteers can learn, grow, live well, and flourish.

Boating Community Comes Alive Memorial Day Weekend Some Safety Tips from BoatUS After the brutal winter there’s a mad rush for boaters to get back on the water for the summer boating season’s annual kick-off, Memorial Day weekend. But the nation’s largest recreational boaters group, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) says “not so fast,” and urges boaters to be prepared by following these five tips: Ensure all safety gear – life jackets, radio, flares and other items – are ready to go. If you have the newer, more comfortable inflatable life jackets, be sure to open them up, inspect and test by filling with air and let them sit overnight to ensure they will keep you buoyant. A free Vessel Safety Check is offered by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and US Power Squadrons can also be requested by going to www.safetyseal.net. Avoid a springtime sinking by ensuring any drive gear such as outdrive bellows (inboard/outboard), shaft packings (inboards), livewell and engine cooling plumbing, or through-hull fittings are not cracked, rotted or severely corroded. Boaters, in their rush to get back on the water, sometimes take short cuts on these critical safety and spring
commissioning items that end up biting them on their undersides. Follow the step-by-step free spring commissioning checklist at www. BoatUS.com/springchecklist. For freshwater boaters: If you keep your boat in a marina or dock that has electricity service, test and inspect to ensure no stray current is leaking into the water where it could potentially lead to
Electric Shock Drowning, an often misunderstood and overlooked safety item. See http://www.BoatUS. com/esdexplained for more. Have a back up plan to get home in case your boat won’t get you back to the ramp or dock. On water or on the road assistance for a disabled boat trailer can be summoned with the free BoatUS Towing App, available at www.BoatUS.com/app.
Have fun and make everyone an important part of your crew. In some areas, boating traffic could be significantly up so use the extra sets of eyes as lookouts, share the sunblock and have plenty of water aboard to stay hydrated. If alcohol is in your plans, celebrate the opening of the season back at the dock or home where you’ll be in a much safer spot.
Travel tips to help introverts enjoy every journey If you’re an introvert, traveling can be a challenge. Being introverted can increase the anxiety you feel when engaging in already-stressful business travel, and undermine your enjoyment of a leisure trip. Being forced to sit next to and even socialize with numerous other people, many of them strangers, can be torture for introverts. “Introverts aren’t necessarily loners or even shy,” says Jim Menge, president of Rovia, an award-winning travel services provider. “They’re just more bothered by travel hassles like crowds, intense together time, and interacting with strangers. It’s important for introverted travelers and their traveling companions to plan an itinerary that will make the trip as stress-free and enjoyable as possible for everyone.” Reserved, not shy About 50 percent of the population are introverts, according to Psychology Today. And while stereotypes may portray introverts as shy, socially phobic loners, that’s not at all who they are. “Introverts are drained by social encounters and energized by solitary, often creative pursuits,” the online journal explains. “Many introverts socialize easily; they just strongly prefer not to.” Your introversion may make you think a group travel experience would never be for you; you’ll stick to taking trips with your core family members and friends. Yet with the Page 16
right itinerary, introverted travelers can find the perfect balance of alonetime and group activities, whether they’re traveling for business or pleasure. Travel tips Menge offers these tips for introverted travelers and the traveling companions who love them: * Talk about your plans with your travel companions, especially if you’ll be touring with extroverts. It’s important everyone discusses what they can do to make the trip as enjoyable as possible for everyone. * Consider how comfortable you are with stretching your limits. “Each person is unique and has their own level of comfort with pushing themselves to try new experiences,” Menge says. “Think about what you’re comfortable with.” For example, learning and using a few foreign phrases, or talking with one person outside the tour group can be a low-stress triumph. * Many introverts are energized by creative and meaningful pursuits. If that describes you, voluntourism may be a great group travel option. Voluntourism is vacation travel with a volunteering component, and it allows you to have meaningful interaction with both locals and fellow travelers that goes beyond the small talk you may dread. Voluntour itineraries like those offered by WorldVentures balance work and relaxation, and volunteer projects
The Coto de Caza News
can last from a single day to several weeks. One day of your trip, you may work with others to build a school, and the next day have free time to explore the sights and sounds of the destination. * Allow yourself adequate free time to get away from the group by yourself (if safe to do so) or with a handful of close loved ones. That away time will allow you to recharge so you’re more relaxed when you rejoin the larger group. * Look for accommodations that won’t force you into social situations. For example, a B&B, where dining is communal, might be an uncomfortable environment for an introverted traveler, while a larger hotel may allow for more anonymity and independence. * Choose activities that allow you to enjoy “me-time,” even if you’re with others. For example, a hike on
a scenic and moderate to strenuous trail will allow for more quiet time - even in a larger group. Everyone will be concentrating on walking carefully and breathing, rather than on socializing. * Use technology to give yourself alone time when you can’t physically get away from others. Wearing headphones or using an e-reader can silently alert your travel companions that you need some time to yourself. “You’re not being rude, you’re just doing what you need to do to recharge,” Menge says. “It’s perfectly OK to do what you need to do in order to maximize your enjoyment of your trip.” You can learn more about voluntourism and group travel opportunities that will please both introverts and extroverts at www. dreamtrips.com. - (BPT)

Elvis Presley’s Honeymoon House of Tomorrow!
By the time he married Priscilla Presley, Elvis could afford to lease or buy just about any house he wanted in any location that appealed to him. After his courtship and marriage to Priscilla, together they chose balmy Palm Springs, California and leased the much talked about House of Tomorrow for their honeymoon. It was the ideal 1960’s home to begin their new life together and if walls could talk, the kitchen might still have a lot to say about peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Presley met Priscilla in Bad Nauheim, Germany in 1959 during his service in the Army when she was only 14-years-old, the daughter of an Army officer and his wife who had taken Priscilla with them to a party at Elvis’s home. Since his fame had already been well established by that time, the military’s social standards of officers not fraternizing with enlisted men was likely suspended for the event. Although she was only 14, Elvis couldn’t get her out of his mind
and their budding relationship turned into a marriage proposal just before Christmas in 1966 - seven years later. They were married at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas in May, 1967. Elvis leased The House of Tomorrow as their honeymoon house on a oneyear lease and their child, Lisa Marie, was born exactly nine months later. Futuristic even for today, the mid-century modern house-in-theround is on the market with walls of glass overlooking a secluded pool terrace and views of the Santa Rosa Mountains and the Coachella Valley. The 5,000-square-foot house has five bedrooms and five baths and comes with 1.16 acres of land with private garden, tennis court and orchard in addition to the swimming pool. The home was designed by modernist architect William Krisel and featured in a 1962 Look magazine article as “The House of Tomorrow,” an example of the coming of age of modern architecture. The design is created out of four circular living
areas on three levels with a curved wall of peanut-brittle stonework, a round kitchen island and a round freestanding fireplace in the middle of the circular living room. In addition to the five bedrooms and five baths, the open-concept living and dining rooms and bar are sized for entertaining and the kitchen includes a breakfast bar. Now on the market at $5.9 million,
the House of the Future is also wellknown as the honeymoon hideaway of the King of Rock ‘n Roll which he leased in 1966-1967 for $21,000 for the year. The listing agent is Mary Kay Nibley of Rodeo Realty in Beverly Hills. For More Information TopTenRealEstateDeals.com. Source: rodeore.com

Why Do We Celebrate Memorial Day? The History of Memorial Day
by Amanda Austin Memorial Day is more than just a weekend off from work, an excuse to throw a picnic, or a reason to take a weekend trip, it is a national holiday. The history behind Memorial Day seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle throughout the years. With May 27th growing closer, take time to familiarize yourself with the history of Memorial Day, and why we celebrate this holiday. Memorial Day, originally known as “Decoration Day,” was established on May 5 1868 by General John Logan, the national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. The first observation of Memorial Day took place on May 30th 1868, by decorating the graves of fallen Union and Confederate soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery. Here is an excerpt from General Logan’s “General Orders No. 11,” officially declaring “Decoration Day.” “The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of re-
spect as circumstances may permit.” New York was the first state to officially recognize Memorial Day as a Holiday in 1873, and all of the Northern states had followed suit by 1890. The Southern states didn’t recognize Memorial Day until after World War 1 when it was changed from recognizing soldiers who lost their lives fighting in the Civil War, to soldiers who lost their lives fighting in any war America participated in. The reason that students and employees are given the day off on
Memorial Day, is so they can properly observe the holiday. When the holiday was originally established nationally it was intended to give patrons the opportunity to visit the graves of our fallen soldiers, attend memorials, fly the American flag at half staff until noon, and acknowledge the “National Moment of Remembrance” at 3:00 PM. The “National Moment of Remembrance” is when everyone has a moment of silence and if you are in a public place “Taps” is played. So, this year on Memorial weekend
take a moment to remember why you don’t have to go to work or school. If you are taking a trip with your family, make your rest stop at a memorial or Veteran’s cemetery and observe the men who have fought for our country. If you are having a get together at your home, or attend one at someone else’s home, give a little speech at 3:00 and call for a moment of silence to remind your friends and family why you are all able to get together that weekend.
Get moving! 6 ways to add steps to your day If you spend a large portion of your day sitting, you’re not alone. Inactivity is one of the key factors contributing to the nation’s high rate of obesity and its related health effects. Research shows 50 to 70 percent of people spend six or more hours a day sitting, and 20 to 35 percent spend four or more hours a day watching TV. This type of inactivity - or ‘sitting disease’ - can lead to serious health conditions. For example, nearly 35 percent of U.S. adults are obese, and obesity-related conditions including heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer are among the leading causes of preventable death. Annual medical spending on an obese patient is estimated to be $1,429 higher than it is for a person of normal weight, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While those figures are discouraging, there is one easy solution that could have a profound impact. Walking is one of the simplest, least expensive and most effective ways individuals can improve their health. It does not require any special skills, expensive equipment or a gym membership. Below are six easy ways to incorporate more walking into your day: 1. Take a walk with a co-worker at lunchtime or schedule a walking
meeting. 2. Schedule a walk with the family after dinner. 3. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. 4. Walk to see a colleague rather than call or e-mail. 5. Get off the bus or train one stop early on your way to work. 6. Start or join a walking or hiking group. By getting just 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as a brisk walk, at least five times a week, you could realize significant health benefits. Walking has been shown to lower the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, hypertension and Type 2 diabetes, improve muscle, bone and joint health, maintain a healthy weight, lead to better sleep and provide a mental boost. That’s why the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association encourages individuals, groups and whole communities to take steps towards a healthier lifestyle through its WalkingWorks program. WalkingWorks, now in its 10th year, was developed in partnership with the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports to help Americans live healthier lives and reduce unnecessary medical costs. Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies across the country also host annual National Walk Lunch day events as a way to promote healthy habits by incorporating walking into a busy
work day. For more information on the Blue *Before beginning any weight loss Cross Blue Shield Association and or nutritional program or new exercise its member companies, please visit regime, consult with your doctor or www.BCBS.com. - (BPT) healthcare provider. The Coto de Caza News

Memorial Day Table Setting Ideas
Memorial Day is great time to celebrate and have fun! We often gather for and plan parties, lunches, events or dinners on this wonderful occasion. It is nice to present our food and drinks on a wonderfully decorated table. If you are hosting such an event, here are some great tips for decorating your table on Memorial Day! My first and favorite choice is the red, white and blue table setting. This is a pretty and colorful way to show your Memorial Day spirit! This table setting idea has many variations that you can choose from! You can use a red table cloth, blue table cloth or white table cloth for this table setting. My favorite is the red table cloth. It does not show spills and stands out. I like to use white plates. If it is an informal gathering or party, white paper plates can be used, though I recommend the plastic plates or sturdiest plates you can find. This will make your guests more comfortable and they will be less likely to spill their plate. Use white napkins. This can be paper napkins or cloth ones. Serve the beverages in blue cups. They can be blue plastic cups or blue glasses. The effect of the white plates, white napkins and blue cups look very nice on a red tablecloth. Add a beautiful basket or vase of red, white and blue carnations in the center of the table. I like to use silk flowers. If you like, you can use real red and white carnations. For an added touch, place small flags in the vase or basket, among the flowers! If you decide to use a blue table cloth, use red or white plates, white napkins and blue or red plastic cups or clear cups or clear glasses. If you use a white table cloth, red
plates, white napkins and blue cups or glasses look wonderful. For silverware, any type can go with this idea, even white plastic. This Memorial Day table setting is easy to set up and very affordable. It looks great! For a Spring like look that is festive and very pretty, use a flowered table cloth. For plates, the color choice is white, napkins can be white and the beverages can be served in clear plastic cups or clear glasses. Use silverware or white plastic ware. A large vase of all different types and colors of flowers look great in the center of this table setting. You can also just use white carnations in a basket. This table setting is colorful, attractive and very easy to do. It is very nice and makes a great Memorial Day table setting, if you do not wish to use the red, white and blue color theme. For an outdoor gathering, a red and white checkered table cloth looks very festive with white plates, white napkins, white plastic ware and red or blue cups or glasses. My preference is using red cups or glasses. I like keeping to the red and white theme on this idea. It looks fancy, yet simple. I add a basket or vase of red and white carnations to the center of the table and it gives the table setting a fun and fancy look. This Memorial Day table setting is sure to please! Depending on how much money you want to spend, you can find many Memorial Day themed table cloths to buy. Some are flag themed and some are red, white and blue checkers, stripes or a mix. If you use these, use white napkins, white
plates, white plastic ware or silverware, and blue cups or blue glasses. Place a basket or vase of white carnations in the center of the table. You can also place small flags in the flower arrangement. This table setting idea is creative and looks great! These Memorial Day table setting ideas are sure to make your holiday table look special. They are very easy to do and cost very little. Your table will look beautiful, festive and fun!
Give your home a quick refresh with these budget-friendly tips Whether you are buying, selling or simply remodeling, you are looking to invest in updates that will increase the value and appeal of your home. It’s natural to want it all, but before you over-personalize or break the bank, there are many simple, budgetfriendly changes that can increase the value of your home without the risk. Cassandra LaValle, interior designer and editor of the acclaimed lifestyle and design site, Coco+Kelley, offers these tried and true tips for upping your home value without overdoing it. * Refresh with paint: You may not be able to replace large appliances or countertops, but in the kitchen adding a fresh coat of neutral paint to outdated cabinets and swapping out hardware can go a long way in making the space feel refreshed. * Little luxuries in the bathroom: Replace your current shower head with a rain shower, like the Waterpik RainFall+. Completely budget-friendly and easy to install - it takes less than five minutes - this showerhead Page 24
can make a huge difference in an everyday routine - giving a spalike experience with multiple highperformance spray settings. The same goes for lighting brightening up this space in particular can be a big selling point. * Don’t forget about the outside: Every home needs curb appeal. If you can’t afford major landscaping, focus on the entrance to the home. Again, updating with paint and hardware on the front door will be a welcoming touch, while a couple of really great potted plants at the entryway add to that focal point. * It’s in the details: Consider adding small details to rooms that will elevate the style. Framing out windows, or adding baseboards, molding or wainscoting to a space will leave it feeling a bit more polished. No matter how big or small your projects, remember it doesn’t take a lot of money to make a big impact to any space. - (BPT) Photo by Belathée

6 fast and fun after-school snack ideas Reading, writing, arithmetic and so much more - school days are busy for kids. Lunch period provides a welcome break, but some schools schedule lunch as early as 10:30. By the end of the day, kids are famished. When your star students arrive home asking for a snack, you don’t have to reach for junk food. Here are some quick, simple and fun ideas for after-school snacks that are tasty and your kids will love. Savory popcorn bar Popped corn is 100 percent whole grain with plenty of fiber to help keep kids satisfied until dinner. Skip the processed microwave varieties and opt to pop on the stove or in an air popper. Then create a popcorn buffet by setting out small bowls and a variety of savory toppings such as finely shredded Parmesan cheese and Italian seasoning. Kids can serve themselves and customize to their taste. Nice cream When the kids want ice cream, but you want a healthier snack, nice cream comes to the rescue. This simple ice cream alternative can be made by freezing sliced ripe bananas. When kids get home from school, blend these banana pieces until smooth for a
cool, creamy treat. You can experiment with different flavors by adding a dab of peanut butter or a few strawberries to the blender. Quick and easy pizza bagels With pepperoni and tomato, pizza bagels are a quick, cheesy fix to afterschool hunger pangs. Start by turning the oven to the broiler setting. Then on a baking tray, place a split Thomas’ Plain Mini Bagel with the cut sides facing up. Spread tomato sauce on each bagel half and sprinkle each half with cheese. Add pepperoni halves and cherry tomato quarters. Place under broiler until cheese is melted. Awesome apple slices Reinvent boring sliced apples with nut butter and granola. Simply slice apples, smear with your nut butter of choice, then roll in granola. For an extra treat, add a drizzle of raw honey, a few mini dark chocolate chips or a quick dash of rainbow sprinkles. Ants on a pond Parents grew up munching ants on a log, the snack that takes a celery spear smeared with peanut butter and lines raisins on top to look like ants. Give this classic a modern twist by slicing a Thomas’ Plain Mini Bagel in half, adding peanut butter and topping with chopped celery and raisins. This
sweet-salty delight is guaranteed to get devoured. Apple and brie mini bagel appetizers Sweet and simple, this cheesy appetizer is the perfect snack after a long day of school. Creamy brie is the perfect pairing with juicy apples. Even Mom and Dad will want to snag a few of these. Ingredients: 2 Thomas’ Plain Mini Bagels, toasted 1 tablespoon of butter 1 wedge Brie cheese 1 Granny Smith apple
1 teaspoon cinnamon Directions: Split and toast two Thomas’ Mini Bagels until golden brown. Spread butter on each bagel half then slice in half again to create quarters. Slice the wedge of Brie cheese into eight equal portions and place one on each bagel quarter. Cut the apple into eight slices and place one slice on top of cheese. Sprinkle with cinnamon to taste. For more simple after-school snack ideas featuring mini bagels and more, visit thomasbreads.com/recipes. (BPT)
Start the Summer off Right - Memorial Day Safety Tips!
Next weekend is Memorial Day Weekend. “Let’s all take part by being responsible for our self and others says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna.” Here are a few safety tips: Travel Safety • Buckle up, slow down, don’t drive impaired. • Be well rested, alert and patient; give your full attention to the road. Do not text and drive! • Let someone know your destination, your route, and when you
expect to arrive. Water Safety Paddle Board? Jet Ski? It’s all harmless fun, right? Fun, certainly. But think before you play. Whatever the activity, observe these three cardinal rules: • Wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. • Know local weather conditions. Make sure the water and weather conditions are safe. Let others know when you hit the water and when you plan to return!
• Learn to swim. Do not swim alone or leave children unattended! Let someone know where and what time your leaving and intend on returning! Grill Safety This fun seasonal ritual has a flip side, though—namely, an onset of injuries and home fires due to careless cooking practices. Here are some tips you can follow to stay safe while enjoying those tasty treats at your cookout. • Never grill indoors or unattended
– not in your house, camper, tent or any enclosed area. • Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, the deck, tree branches, or anything that could catch fire. Hot grease or ashes could spill from the grill onto the wooden deck or into dry leaves or grass. For additional safety tips go to: http://www.mass.gov/ocabr/docs/ advisories/safe-memorial-day-weekend.pdf Happy Memorial Day and Be Safe!

And in his four-star Critics’ Pick review, Time Out’s David Cote proclaimed, “School’s IN – forever!” School of Rock – The Musical was nominated for four 2016 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score (Lloyd Webber and Slater), Best Book (Fellowes), and Best Leading Actor in a Musical (Alex Brightman). School of Rock – The Musical also won the 2017 Oliver award for Outstanding Achievement in Music. Based on the hit film, School of Rock – The Musical is a hilarious show that follows Dewey Finn, a
failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitarshredding, bass-slapping, mindblowing rock band. While teaching these pint-size prodigies what it means to truly rock, Dewey falls for the school’s beautiful, but uptight headmistress, helping her rediscover the wild child within. School of Rock – The Musical features scenic and costume design by Anna Louizos, lighting design by Natasha Katz, sound design by Mick Potter and music supervision by John Rigby. School of Rock — The Musical is produced on Broadway by Andrew Lloyd Webber for The Really Useful Group, Warner Music Group & Access Industries, The Shubert Organization and The Nederlander Organization. Nina Lannan and Madeleine Lloyd Webber serve as Executive Producers. Segerstrom Center for the Arts applauds Charles Schwab for its sponsorship of School of Rock – The Musical. Kia Motors America is the Official Automotive Partner, United Airlines is the Official Airline, and Omaha Steaks International is the Official Fine Food Retailer. Get adventurous with these 5 fun family activities
Before this year ends, take advantage of the free time you have to partake in fun activities with those you love the most: your family. It’s tempting to stick to the same routine of going to the local playground, taking in a movie or playing in the backyard. Why not try some new experiences this year and go on a family adventure? These five activities are fun for the whole family and will help create lasting memories together. Incorporate a couple (or all five!) ideas into your schedule to begin fall on a fun note. Take in a variety of wildlife at the zoo. Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! You don’t have to be a child to marvel at the unique and aweinspiring beauty of our world’s wildlife. Frito-Lay 2 Go (FL2Go) is partnering with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) to encourage families to get out and enjoy unique animal experiences. By visiting an AZA-accredited zoo or aquarium, you’ll be supporting their conservation efforts to save endangered animals from extinction - all
while having an unforgettable time with your family. To find a free kid’s pass, head to your local grocery store and look for FL2Go packages featuring a tiger, panda, monkey, elephant or penguin. Then visit aza.fritolay2.com to upload the receipt and find your closest AZA facility. Go kayaking and plan a picnic by the water. Forget the open road, and hit the open water! Kayaking is a fun, active adventure. Soak in the sun and cool breeze, relish in the relaxed environment and enjoy a quiet moment or two with the kids. When you’re done, extend your time by the water and have a family picnic. Pack a lunch of sandwiches and your favorite chips to refuel. Spend a night star gazing to look for constellations. Before the sun goes down, take some time to learn about the various constellations, and have everyone in the family select their favorite one. Then, in the evening, lay out a blanket in your backyard for a night of star gazing, and see who can spot their favorite constellation. To amplify the adventure, turn the night into a backyard camping trip, complete with a tent, campfire and songs. Stop by the local animal shelter to take friendly pups on a walk. The best part of volunteering is anyone at any age can make a difference! Schedule a family trip to your local animal shelter to spend the afternoon
walking dogs, playing with cats and more! Time with a few furry friends will brighten everyone’s day and you can feel good knowing you brightened their day, too. Pick your own apples before baking a mouthwatering pie. When the temperature starts to drop and the leaves begin to turn colors, embrace the changing of seasons by visiting your local apple orchard. A delicious day trip, apple orchards often offer a wide range of family fun activities, such as hay rides and petting zoos, to make the apple-picking experience that much more enjoyable. After you return home, continue the family time in the kitchen by baking a homemade apple pie! Hectic end-of-year schedules will be in full swing before you know it, so take advantage of the time you have now to go on a family adventure and create fun-filled memories. Visit fritolay2go.com for more family-friendly activities. - (BPT)
Creating confidence: 8 steps to feeling more self-assured
Virtually everyone struggles with a lack of self-confidence at some point in their lives and it’s perfectly normal to feel unsure of yourself in certain situations. However, if you find a lack of confidence is holding you back from fully enjoying your personal life, or achieving your professional goals, it may be time to take action. “There are actually steps you can take to rebuild your confidence, even when you’re struggling to feel self-assured,” says Susie Moore, a motivational speaker, best-selling author and life coach. “Confidence is a real-life super power that affects every aspect of your life, from your relationships to your career and social life, but it’s also more attainable than you think.” Moore shares tips on how you can be your most confident self and live a fulfilled, unconditional life: * Tap the power of words and positive thinking by starting every day with an uplifting mantra. Positive self-talk such as “I am loveable. I am worthy. I am enough” can help boost confidence levels. Make a conscious decision to be more kind and gentle with yourself every day. * Practice a strong pose and smile to help enhance your sense Page 28
of confidence. Confidence is all about attitude. Making these small physical changes can immediately impact how self-assured you feel in any situation. * Make self-care non-negotiable. Take time to listen to your body and give it what it needs to help you feel confident. For example, millions of men and women experience bladder leakage, but products like Depend FIT-FLEX Underwear, which are designed to move with your body while offering trusted protection, can help you think less about leaks. That’s energy you can devote to better things, like reconnecting with the people and parts of your life you’ve been missing. * Keep your mind and body active. Being busy leaves you little time to overthink, so fill your life with activities you enjoy. Yoga, visiting friends, reading, cooking, going for walks or even organizing your closet all count! * Speak with intention. The way you talk impacts your mood, your confidence and how other people perceive you. When you use verbiage like “I’ll try” or “I don’t think I can,” you’re really allowing yourself permission to feel unconfident.
The Coto de Caza News
Instead, build confidence and commitment with statements like “I will” and “I know I can.” * Don’t overcomplicate things or allow yourself to be distracted by unimportant things. Focus on your daily objectives and long-term goals by cultivating a clear and positive vision of how you want your life to be. * Listen to, but don’t heed negative opinions of others. Your positive attitude and vision are more important than anyone else’s negative thoughts. * Be sure to reserve time and energy for your own priorities. Busy
lives mean we can get bogged down with commitments to others, and while those things are important, it’s vital to take care of yourself and your own priorities first. Build your schedule around the time you need for your own goals and let everything else fit in around that. “Confidence is an almost-magical quality that can help you lead your best, most fulfilled life and - more importantly - it’s in your grasp!” Moore says.
