Mother’s Day Proclamation 1870 by Mary Langenback Every one of us has had or has a mother or step mother, at some point in our lives. Mothers day has been celebrated since the early 1900’s. Although my own mother has passed away and I have no children of my own, I still remember her wonderful influence on my life. In celebration of mother’s day I wanted to learn about the history of mother’s day and was surprised to find out that it was originally a woman’s reaction to war. Julia Ward Howe, herself influenced by a one Anna Jarvis who sought to improve sanitation through “Mother’s Work days” in the mid 1850’s. So originally Mother’s day was a day for Mothers to work to improve the lives of those around them. Julia Ward Howe, who lived through the Civil War, saw it as the only way to attempt to stop men from warring with each other. Call it what you will, but her idea was a day of peace. In 1870 she gave a proclamation (Read in full at: http://womenshistory.about.com/ od/howejwriting/a/mothers_day.htm) for women to take counsel together after mourning their dead and to make an attempt to influence those around them, especially their family members, to do all they can to stop war and live at peace with their brothers and sisters around the globe. It was to be remembered that war has many other side effects than just the funerals during and afterward. There was an emotional effect upon women all over the world, crying for their dead, some who had depended upon those men for support, in societies that do not allow women to work. Some of these women with no men to depend on must get married to men they don’t like, or go into prostitution for survival. The effect also was (and
is) economic, men in the 1800’s were the primary bread winners even here in America. Mothers day was first celebrated in a small church, the church in Virginia where Anna Jarvis’ daughter attended. Soon this holiday spread to most of the other 48 continental states. By 1920 it had been celebrated as a national holiday. Slowly, but surely we have stripped it of its original meaning, and have continued to war against ourselves (even our own family members and neighbors) and those of other countries. Even now we are at war in several places in the middle east. Our sons, and husbands, and fathers and lovers have gone off to war and this month we are going to sit at home with those who have stayed behind and celebrate the fact that we, or our relatives and friends, are mothers. Some husbands and families will cry (inside at least), because now there are some mothers at war. We have come a long, long way and it is so very, very sad to say where we have ended up. We celebrate, adore, worship, and congratulate
the mothers, the first time mothers, the oldest mother’s, the youngest mothers and the mothers with the most children. This is not how Mother’s day was supposed to be celebrated. As I said earlier, the original Mothers day was “celebrated” by mothers going out and caring about the health and sanitation of their communities. So, this Mother’s day when you are buying her gifts and taking her out to dinner, take a long, long look at her. Think of what the world would be without our mothers, without our mother’s love and teaching. Think about what femininity meant to society in the past. It meant a caregiver in the family, a teacher, a spiritual leader, one who would (ideally) teach about peace and brotherhood. Then, talk together, after the younger kids have gone to bed, about how mothers, fathers and possibly what your family can do this next year to influence others to stop war. Lets get back to Julia Ward Howe’s original plea: Disarm! Disarm! or even the 1960’s motto: “Make love, not war”!
Don’t cry because it’s over, Smile because it happened! ~Dr. Seuss

On Saturday, April 9, Santa Margarita Catholic High School welcomed over 60 special needs athletes to the aquatics center of SMCHS to compete in the 6th Annual Special Olympics Swim Meet. These athletes came from several different southern California swim clubs including the Irvine Eagles, Fullerton Sharks, Rio-Aquatics and the OC Barracudas. Students from the Santa Margarita swim program were there to greet each and every athlete, as well as serve as ambassadors throughout the day. Students escorted their athlete to the various events and were there to coach and support. Coaches and parents from each swim club were also in attendance to cheer on and support their athletes through each of their events. This event is our swimmers favorite swim meet because they have a buddy, which is great for both the students here and our swimmers”
said Orange County Dolphin’s parent, Sue Chrastka. “When April comes around our athletes get very excited because they know that this meet is coming and we are just very thankful that Santa Margarita participates and comes all out for our swimmers.” Athletes participated in events such as the freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and relay races as well as a “jog” in the pool’s shallow end. Following the races, each athlete a certificate from their assigned Santa Margarita student partner. “I have worked at with Special Olympics at Santa Margarita for three years now, both at the track & field event and the swim meet, and I can say that these are by far my favorite activities to attend,” said Senior Kayla Jahangiri. “It has been amazing to bond with my buddy over the past three years because she is such an inspiration to me.”

F oot care ad v i ce for new moms and bab i es Few things in life are as darling as a newborn’s little feet, and most new moms take great joy in counting 10 tiny, perfect toes. But foot health can be a source of anxiety for both new and expectant mothers, who may wonder about the best ways to care for their baby’s feet, and how to cope with changes in their own feet. “Pregnancy creates many changes in the body, and can even affect the size of a woman’s feet,” says Dr. Matthew Garoufalis, a podiatrist and president of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). “And even though newborns aren’t walking yet, it’s understandable that mothers may have some concerns about how to best take care of their baby’s feet.” The discomforts of pregnancy are common and well-known, ranging from back pain and frequent bathroom trips to feet that are both sore and bigger. “It’s not at all unusual for a woman to gain a shoe size while pregnant,” Garoufalis says. “Increased weight puts more pressure on the foot, the arch flattens a bit and the foot elongates. Just a quarterinch increase in foot length is enough to prompt a change in shoe size.” While it’s probably impossible to completely avoid foot challenges during pregnancy, momsto-be can take steps to minimize them: * Control weight gain. Added weight is the most likely cause of foot expansion. Do your best to follow your obstetrician’s guidelines for how much weight you should gain throughout the pregnancy. * Avoid high heels. Sure you see celebrities accessorizing their baby bumps with stilettos, but a lower heel during pregnancy will relieve pressure on the foot. Also, lower heels will provide you with Page 8
greater stability during a time when newly gained weight might throw off your balance. It’s easy to find plenty of pretty, stylish lower heels - 1 to 2 inches in height - that will look and feel great while you’re pregnant. * Comfort and support should be key considerations any time you choose footwear, but they are even more important for pregnant women. With extra weight and pressure on your feet for nine months, you need a shoe that provides support and cushioning. Avoid thin-soled shoes (including flip-flops and ballet flats); look for shoes with thicker soles and plenty of cushioning inside the shoes. Whatever shoe you choose, it should bend only at the ball of the foot, and you should never be able to twist the sole or bend it anywhere else. While it’s common for women’s feet to enlarge during pregnancy - and remain that size even after delivery - generally that size increase occurs only with a first pregnancy. So you shouldn’t worry that your feet will continue to grow with subsequent pregnancies. Instead, many new moms will worry about their new baby’s feet. “The good news is, as long as the baby’s feet are healthy at birth most newborns won’t require special care for their feet,” Garoufalis says. “Caring for your baby’s feet is much like caring for the rest of her body.” Don’t worry if your baby’s feet look discolored or wrinkled or even have flaky, peeling skin when she is born. After nine months in protective fluid within the womb, they’re bound to look a bit different from yours. Your pediatrician will look for any obvious abnormalities of your baby’s feet and legs, and will let you know what to do if he or she finds some
The Coto de Caza News
concern. Use baby nail clippers to keep your child’s toenails trimmed, cutting straight across to prevent ingrown toenails. Be sure to thoroughly dry baby’s feet after a bath, and choose soft, anti-microbial socks that don’t wrinkle or bunch to keep her feet warm and protected. When she starts to walk, bare feet are best inside the house as she’s learning the finer points of getting around. Outside, put her in a lightweight, flexible shoe made of natural materials. If foot problems run in your family, consider having your child examined by a podiatrist when she begins to walk. He or she can examine your child’s feet to ensure they’re growing normally. You can find a podiatrist that specializes in pediatrics at www.apma.org. - (BPT)

Alton Brown Makes a Stop at Segerstrom Center During New National Tour Eat Your Science May 13, 2016
Segerstrom Center for the Arts welcomes Television personality, author and Food Network star Alton Brown on his new national tour Alton Brown Live: Eat Your Science coming to Segerstrom Center for the Arts May 13, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. Brown’s first North American tour, Edible Inevitable was a huge success over two years and 100 cities with more than 150,000 fans in attendance. With Eat Your Science, fans can expect more comedy, talk show antics, multimedia presentations and music (yes, he sings), but Brown is adding a slew of fresh ingredients including new puppets, songs, bigger and potentially more dangerous experiments and what every cook needs in his kitchen: FIRE. Tickets start at $49 and may be purchased online at SCFTA.org, the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 5562787. For inquiries about group ticket savings for 10 or more, call the Group Services office at (714) 755-0236. The TTY number is (714) 556-2746. Critics and fans have raved about the interactive component where Brown invites audience members on stage to serve as his assistant. “There will be plenty of new therapy inducing opportunities during our audience participation segments. I don’t want
to give too much away, but we’re also going to play a little game with the audience,” says Brown. Brown has a knack for mixing together a perfect base of science, music and food into two hours of pure entertainment. “Plus, you’ll see things that I was never allowed to do on TV.” He also says larger and more protective ponchos will be provided to the first few rows as his experiments have the potential to get messy. Brown, author of the James Beard award winning I’m Just Here for the Food and New York Times bestselling sequence Good Eats, is releasing the first of two new cookbooks through Ballantine Books (an imprint of Random House) in the Fall of 2016. ALTON BROWN: EVERY DAY COOK, or EDC as Brown calls it, is a collection of more than 100 personal recipes as well as a pinch of science and history. He has hosted numerous series including Cutthroat Kitchen, Camp Cutthroat and Iron Chef America and created, produced and hosted the Peabody award winning series Good Eats for 13 years on Food Network; Good Eats can still Alton Brown be seen on the Cooking Channel and Netflix. Cook Up a Mother’s Day to Remember
Mother’s Day is a time for wining, dining and celebrating moms everywhere. Make this Mother’s Day one to remember by hosting a special brunch get-together for the special ladies in your life. Although quality time together is the true purpose of the day, you can add some special touches to help create a one-of-a-kind brunch to share old memories while you make new ones. Plan your tablescape. Colorful, fragrant flowers and luxurious linens make your everyday table shine. Use plates in complementing shades and sparkling glassware for an elegant touch. If you have room, add personal touches to the centerpiece, such as
Page 10
mementoes from shared trips or small picture frames with pictures of the two of you through the years. Prepare a sophisticated menu. Give a nod to the importance of the day with dishes that are a step above standard brunch fare. A richly flavored entree such as this Spring Vegetable and Chevre Tart looks elegant but is surprisingly easy to make. For a cohesive spread, remember to give the basics a boost, too, such as a homemade flavored whipped butter. Offer a gift with meaning. To truly elevate the occasion, serve (or gift) your mom with a deliciously meaningful wine, such as Cambria Benchbreak Chardonnay or Pinot Noir from the famed Santa Maria bench in Santa Barbara County. Cambria is a family-owned winery that believes in honoring women across the United States and globally. Each year, the winery gives $100,000 to women making a difference in their communities through their Seeds of Empowerment program. Pinot Noir Rosemary Butter Recipe courtesy of Erin Kennedy of My Thirty Spot Blog 1 cup salted homemade whipped butter (recipe below) 3/4 cup Cambria Benchbreak Pinot Noir 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary Fill shallow saucepan with wine and simmer until consistency becomes syrupy (reducing to about 1/8 cup).
Let syrup cool completely. Add syrup and rosemary to whipped butter and mix. Serve chilled. Homemade Whipped Butter 1/2 quart heavy cream 1/2 teaspoon salt (up to 3/4 teaspoon, to taste) In food processor, mix butter until cream turns to consistency of cottage cheese and starts to separate from buttermilk, about 3-5 minutes of constant mixing. Strain butter from buttermilk. Use wooden spoon to knead butter in water (just like dough) to remove all remaining buttermilk. Drain and repeat until water is clear. Remaining whipped butter is ready to serve or for adding flavoring ingredients.

National Charity League Juniors, Newport Beach Chapter Celebrates with a Fashion Fling! Photos by: Ann Chatillon The Newport Beach chapter of National Charity League, Juniors hosted
Co-Chair Wendy Blackband, Co-Chair Kristin Sheward, President Jennifer Middlemas, and Co-Chair Brooke Willems
its 30th annual mother-daughter luncheon and fashion show at the Balboa Bay Club and Resort. This year’s luncheon theme, “Fashion Fling,” proved once again that although fashions may change with the seasons, enthusiastic community support for outstanding organizations like National Charity League, Jrs. is never out of style. More than 430 guests stepped out for an afternoon of fun, food and fashion supporting NCL, Jrs. in raising nearly $80,000.00 this year in support of three local charities: High Hopes Head Injury Program, Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation (PCRF) and the Harry and Grace Steele Children’s Center at Orange Coast College. The Balboa Bay Club’s entrance and ballroom was transformed in keeping with the theme “Fashion Fling” for the festive afternoon that honored the

out-going 6th-grade members and their mothers. The adults were served with a Cobb Salad with Bread and Cheesecake for dessert. The children enjoyed lemonade, cheeseburger sliders, French fries, fruit skewers and sundaes for dessert! During lunch, a wonderful silent auction was happening with plenty of items to choose from for both adults and the children. Two Adele tickets to her upcoming concert in October in the premier section with parking was up for grabs as well as four tickets to see Dave Matthews at the Irvine Verizon Wireless Theater. A vacation at the Four Seasons Punta Mita for 4 nights along with airfare, two lodge level tickets for the American Music Awards Show and round trip flight for 4 people from Orange County to Las Vegas on a Phenom 100 JetSuite were just some of the Adult items. The kids had their share to bid on with a Le Pain Quotidien Private Baking Class for up

to 12 kids for a fun birthday party, 4 Selena Gomez concert tickets at the Honda Center and more to them to choose from. Following lunch, models from Bloomingdale’s Fashion Island hit the runway. They modeled a variety of designers from Tory Burch, Alice and Olivia, DKNY, and Kate Spade. The lively show included plenty of highfives from the models passing by the lineup of attentive young girls in their traditional place along the runway. The Newport Beach Chapter of National Charity League, Juniors, is composed of women with daughters ranging from kindergarten through 6th grade. The purpose of NCL Jrs. is to initiate and promote charitable endeavors, and to foster mother-daughter relationships in philanthropic, cultural and social activities. Parents and children enjoy spending quality time together, but it’s not always easy to find shared interests. The backyard, however, can provide the perfect place for generations to meet when parents help kids learn the delights of birdwatching and bird-feeding. Interacting with backyard birds benefits children on many levels, including teaching them the responsibility of caring for other living things to nurturing their appreciation of nature. Fall and winter are the perfect times to introduce kids to backyard bird care; as food sources dwindle in their natural habitat, birds will frequent a backyard where feeders serve up seed and suet daily. The wild bird experts at Cole’s Wild Bird Products offer some guidance for families launching bird feeding lessons: Feeder facts: Different bird species like different types of feeders, but some styles, such as tube feeders, will attract a large variety of birds. Basic bird feeder styles include: * Tube - Best for serving seed, tube feeders keep the contents clean and dry, providing birds with access to the food through feeding ports. They’re great all-purpose feeders and will attract the most variety of songbirds. It’s important to clean tube feeders regularly, so choose a Page 14
model that’s easy to clean. Cole’s high-quality tubular feeders are made with state-of-the-art materials to prevent warping, discoloration, and they feature Quick Clean removable bases that make cleaning fast and simple. Feeder bottoms pop off with the push of a button. * Bowl feeders - If separating seeds into different feeders gets too complicated, bowl feeders can be an all-in, easy solution. Options like Cole’s Bountiful Bowl Feeder can accommodate a variety of feed types, from seed and suet to mealworms, fruits and nuts. Bowl feeders are especially good starter feeders for children since they are easy to fill and clean. * Suet feeders - During cold winter months, suet is an essential source of energy for birds. Suet feeders can range from a simple mesh onion bag to a wire or plastic mesh box that affixes to a tree, or post. Woodpeckers, warblers, nuthatches, titmice, jays and chickadees love suet. Whatever styles of feeder you choose - and a mix is ideal - be sure to select feeders that are sturdy enough to withstand winter weather and unwanted visitors, like squirrels. They should be tight enough to keep seeds dry, and easy to disassemble for cleaning. Most importantly, keep them maintained and stocked - if you
The Coto de Caza News
neglect to feed them, birds will go elsewhere. Food fun: In order to attract birds, it’s important to serve high-quality food. Seed blends with too much cheap seed, known as fill, won’t satisfy birds, and you’ll end up with a mound of discarded fill under feeders and few feathered friends in your backyard. Here are some basic foods birds look for in winter: * Suet - Long gone are the days when serving suet was a messy proposition. Kids can serve suet without messing up their little hands when you choose convenient suet cakes, kibbles, nuts and pearls. Many of these suet options are mixed with other treats birds love, such as nuts, grains and berries. You can even find options with habanero pepper infused in the fat to dissuade squirrels from dining on the suet. Nutberry Suet Blend, by Cole’s, mixes human-grade cherries, apples and blueberryflavored cranberries, preferred nuts, nutritious insect suet kibbles and whole kernel sunflower meats into an energy-packed, powerhouse feed. * Seed - Many songbirds favor seeds, and in winter it can be difficult for birds to find seeds in nature. From black oil sunflower seeds and Niger to seed mixes, it’s important to serve a variety of high-quality seeds. Choose mixes with large proportions
of sunflower seeds and avoid ones with fillers like wheat, milo and corn; birds will pick out the appealing seeds and kick out the filler. You can learn more about seed mixes at www. coleswildbird.com. * Dried mealworms - Although the name might imply an “ick factor” that appeals to kids, serving dried mealworms is easy and messfree. High in protein, mealworms are favored by bluebirds, flickers, woodpeckers, siskins and nuthatches. Plus you don’t have to feed them or keep them in the fridge like with live mealworms! Introducing kids to backyard birdfeeding is an enjoyable - and easy - way to connect families with nature - and to each other. All you’ll need is a feeder, bird feed and some time. The birds will come, kids will surely enjoy the experience, and you’ll all have some good family fun.

Tips for Staying Healthy Even With a Busy Schedule Life can sometimes feel a little too jam-packed with work, errands, carpools, cooking dinner and more. When that happens, healthy habits often fall by the wayside in favor of convenience. Fast food can replace home cooked meals and exercise makes way for the television. Registered dietitians and authors Lyssie Lakatos and Tammy Lakatos Shames, who are also known as “The Nutrition Twins,” have advice for feeling good and staying healthy despite a busy schedule. Drink up: People often mistake thirst for hunger, prompting them to overeat. Keep seltzer, iced green tea or water with lime in the fridge. The next time you want a nosh between meals, drink a glass first and see what happens. Sneak in exercise: If it feels like too much of a task to get to the gym each day, sneak in exercise wherever you can. Take the stairs instead of the elevator at work or push your kids on the swings for an arm workout. Even if you walk around the neighborhood for 15 minutes, it counts. Just get moving! Simplify, simplify, simplify: Mornings tend to be hectic, so The Nutrition Twins get excited when they can eliminate something from their routine. That’s why they love
Vitamints. They’re a vitamin and mint in one that can be taken anytime, anywhere even without food or water; it’s easy to just pop them in your bag or car and go. The twins like the Immune, Energy and Multi for Women varieties. For more information, visit www.Vitamints.com. Bite into some energy: You might think a sugary candy bar from the office vending machine will perk you up, but a healthy, balanced snack will
keep you on your toes longer. Make sure your snack has a quality, highfiber carbohydrate, like fresh fruit, oatmeal or whole-grain crispbread, for long lasting energy and a lean protein, such as a hardboiled egg or Greek yogurt, to help you feel satisfied. The two will work together to keep your energy up and your desire to visit the snack machine down. Sleep tight: Sleep deprivation slows your metabolism down and negatively
affects your immune system. When you’re busy that’s the last thing you need. Set yourself a bedtime that’s eight hours before you have to wake up and start getting ready for bed 30 minutes prior to that. The last step is tough, but don’t bring your phone or computer to bed with you. Instead, pick up a book to help you relax and drift off to sleep. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

Create an outdoor space that ‘ wows’
Whether you own a cozy cottage or mega mansion, as a homeowner, you likely embrace the outdoor living trend. But when you look at your deck or patio, does it leave something to be desired? By taking a do-it-yourself (DIY) approach, you can affordably create outdoor spaces that enhance the style and functionality of your home, plus add to the overall value of the property. Here are a few of the leading trends that the DIY homeowner can use to cost-effectively create an outdoor space that “wows:” Rent rather than buy Upgrading or adding a deck or patio can feel overwhelming unless you have the right equipment to do the job. Renting what you need saves money, plus helps you maximize your time so you can enjoy your new outdoor space sooner. From power washers and saws for cleaning and cutting, to utility loaders and tampers for digging and compacting base materials, you’ll find everything you need at your local American Rental Association member rental store. Visit www.RentalHQ.com for locations near you. Not sure what you need? The pros at the shop are specially trained and can help you choose the best time-saving tools for your project. Use pavers for patios Whether you’re looking to refresh your current patio space or are starting from scratch, patios are great ground-level entertainment spaces. More homeowners are opting for pavers to level and define the space, which adds elegant detail, rather than a bland concrete slab. Find pavers in varying shapes, sizes and colors at your local home improvement store. Remember, by digging and installing a base layer, your pavers are less likely to shift over time. Dig down and
Page 24
compact base material with a rented plate compactor or a tamper before laying the pavers in the desired pattern. Define your deck If you’re adding a new deck, composite decking material is the way to go. While it costs a bit more than lumber, it lasts longer and is virtually maintenance-free, which will save you time and money in the long run. It’s just as easy to work with as wood and can be cut and assembled in a similar manner. If you simply want to refresh an existing wood deck, rent a power washer to quickly clean off dirt, grime and paint chips. Replace gray and tan paint with deep brown hues, which adds a subtle upscale appearance. Modern exterior paint lasts years and some options even fill cracks in wood, so look for a brand
The Coto de Caza News
that best suits your needs. Go native with greenery Adding plants to your outdoor space helps the area feel cohesive with nature. Not sure what to add? Whether for pots, containers or the surrounding landscaping, consider native lawn and plant materials. Not only will they look great and add color and depth to your outdoor space, but they are typically lower maintenance and many require less water. Explore options at your local garden center or state extension service’s website. Create an outdoor kitchen Homeowners want to enjoy more time outside and that means cooking and dining al fresco. While a basic barbecue grill will do, outdoor kitchens are in high demand. Building your own outdoor kitchen space is simple. Install countertops surrounding your
grill and consider incorporating features like a small fridge, gas burners for side items, smokers or built-in storage spaces for spices and cooking tools. Stainless steel continues to be the go-to material for outdoor kitchen features, blending modern style with the organic look of Mother Nature. Light the night The right lighting can take a good outdoor space and make it great. Solar lighting is trending for outdoor spaces, and this eco-friendly option is also affordable. Light pathways with solar landscape lighting - eliminating the need for electrical cords. Jazz up deck posts with post caps that provide a gentle glow. Finally, a string or two of white garden lights adds a twinkle to the beautiful ambiance of a summer evening.

12 minutes a day mental gymnastics Memory exercises performed for just 12 minutes a day for 8 consecutive weeks have proven to to keep the brain sharp and can reverse memory loss in those at risk for developing alzheimers. The memory exercise called Kirtan Kriya has been researched and tested, and has proven to be beneficial to the people at risk, as well as their caregivers. “Kirtan Kriya is scientifically proven to boost blood flow to critical brain areas and increase mental energy, sharpen concentration and improve focus,” explains Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa, Medical Director of the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation. Because of its demonstrated mental health benefits, Kirtan Kriya has been vigorously studied by the ARPF in concert with scientists from top medical schools such as UCLA, USCF, and the University of Pennsylvania, and findings have been published in prestigious medical journals such as the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and The Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. “As a result of the extraordinary findings of these studies, Kirtan Kriya has been endorsed by the ARPF as a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.”utive weeks have proven to to keep the brain sharp and can reverse memory loss in those at risk for developing alzheimers. The memory extraordinary findings of these studies, Kirtan Kriya has been endorsed by the ARPF as a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.” According to Dr. Dharma, Kirtan Kriya (pronounced “Keertun Kreea”), is a type of meditation derived from the Kundalini yoga tradition, which has been practiced for thousands of years. This meditation is often referred to as a
singing exercise, and it involves singing the primal sounds “Saa”, “Taa”, “Naa”, and “Maa”, along with repetitive finger and thumb movements, or mudras. “The current recommendation for practicing Kirtan Kriya was developed by combining thousands of years of ancient techniques with millions of dollars of scientific study,” says Dr. Dharma. “The number one fear among adults is losing their mental faculties. It is important that people understand that by taking preventative measures and making lifestyle changes, such as incorporating Kirtan Kriya exercises into a daily routine, we can reduce the number of people developing Alzheimer’s by as much as 50 percent,” continues Dr. Dharma. It is believed that the placement of the tongue on the roof of the mouth while carrying out Kirtan Kriya chanting sounds stimulates 84 acupuncture points on the
upper palate, causing a beneficial biochemical transformation in the brain. Additionally, research has revealed that utilizing the fingertip position in conjunction with the sounds enhances blood flow to particular areas in the motor-sensory part of the brain. The exercise increases brain blood flow to critically important areas and promotes greater attention, concentration, focus, improved short term memory, and better mood. “Our research revealed a reduction in inflammation, less depression and a 44 percent increase in the enzyme known as telomerase, which is a breakthrough anti-aging discovery,” explains Dr. Dharma. “Essentially when you have more telomerase, you live longer in better health and with an improved memory.” More information is available at http://www.alzheimersprevention.org/research.htm

New baby checklist: Tips to start securing your child’s future
Your new bundle of joy has just arrived. In addition to midnight feedings and changing diapers, new parents need to take important steps to set up their children for success in the years to come. According to FindLaw.com, the nation’s leading website for free legal information, the first and most important step is obtaining an official birth certificate. This document is the gateway to obtaining other important documentation throughout life, such as a Social Security number, a stateissued photo I.D. or a passport. Here are additional tips from FindLaw.com that every new parent should consider: Get a Social Security number: Many hospitals allow you to apply for a Social Security number at the same time they are recording your child’s birth. You’ll need the number for a variety of reasons, from declaring your new child as a dependent on your federal and state income taxes to setting up education savings and retirement accounts. Child identity theft is a growing problem, so be sure to safeguard this information. Obtain custodial rights: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of four firstborn babies is born to an unmarried couple living together. In nearly every state, the mother has 100 percent custody rights until paternity (identity of the father) is established. It’s in the Page 26
child’s financial interest to confirm paternity to guarantee that the father helps support the child financially until he or she turns 18. On the other side, if the father wants to guarantee visitation rights or have a say in how the child is raised, it’s in his interest to initiate the paternity process. Sign up your child for health insurance: Immediately add your child as a dependent on your health insurance plan. If you don’t have coverage, research options online or through your state. Remember, it will be mandatory for everyone to have coverage in 2014 with the passage of the Affordable Health Care Act. Consider term life insurance: A customized term life insurance policy can help cover expenses in the event that you or your spouse unexpectedly dies before your child reaches adulthood. You also may consider purchase coverage to pay off your home or any debts. Select a legal guardian: The other issue to settle in the unexpected death of a parent is to choose a legal guardian in your will. This person would assume legal responsibility for your child until adulthood. Before you designate someone for this, talk to the person to see if he or she is willing to accept the responsibility. If you don’t have a will, new parents can find an attorney with experience in wills and estates in their local area by visiting FindLaw.com.
The Coto de Caza News
Fingerprint your child: While it is horrifying to imagine, in the event that your child should go missing, fingerprints and a recent photo of your child can assist authorities. There are many kits available online for you to gather and organize this information. Get your child immunized: Many state laws require that newborns be immunized for a number of childhoodrelated diseases before they can enter day care or school. Establish a relationship with a pediatrician and make sure that your child is immunized at the recommended stages of growth. Know your legal rights at work: Check with your employer about policies related to raising a child and how a new child may affect your
benefits. Review paid-time off, sick day and other attendance policies so you are prepared for your child’s own sick days, school conferences and other events. Start saving now: As soon as you receive your new child’s Social Security number, you should immediately consider opening up a 529 savings plan or Coverdell education savings account. Both can be used to cover future qualified educational expenses for your child. Based on the power of compounding returns, investing over a longer period is more effective than waiting until you have a large amount to invest so even if it’s a small amount, start investing right away. -(BPT)

Life’s Lessons from Your Mother By Bryan Golden Your mother tried to teach you some valuable lessons. Moms have a unique ability to impart essential wisdom. Unfortunately, most of us were too young to really appreciate their value. Mother’s Day is a great time to review the following advice you got when you were a kid. You can be whatever you want to be. You have no limitations. The whole world is open to you. Your future is ahead of you. You can accomplish whatever you set your mind to. It’s ok to dream. Be nice to your friends and they will be nice to you. People respond to the way you treat them. If you are mean and selfish, no one will want to play with you. Share your toys and don’t be a bully. Be considerate of the feelings of others. Do your homework and you will get good grades. Success takes work. If you don’t put in the effort, you won’t reap the rewards. Those who work hard will succeed. Clean your room now. Get things done today and you won’t have to worry about them. If you let things pile up, it will be difficult to catch up. You can play once your chores are done. Get your work done before
you take a break. Then you can relax and have a good time. Stay in school. If you don’t get an education, your opportunities will be limited. Don’t drop out of school. The more you learn, the more you benefit. Sticks and stones will break your bones but names will never hurt you.
It doesn’t matter what other people say. Don’t allow others to upset you. There will always be mean people. Don’t pay attention to them. Don’t waste your time. Time goes by very fast. Don’t wait to pursue your dreams. Be thankful for what you have. There are many who are not as
fortunate as you. Be grateful for your home and family. It doesn’t matter what someone else has. Don’t complain. Whining is annoying. If you have something to say, say it. If you complain all the time, no one will want to listen to you.
Pageant of the Masters Director Plays Matchmaker with 2016 Show, “Partners” Tickets for the much-anticipated 2016 Pageant of the Masters are on sale now and make the perfect holiday gift for the art lover on your list. This holiday season share the excitement with tickets to next summer’s production of Partners. The 2016 Pageant of the Masters sets out in search of stories of compelling collaborations that led to the creation of unforgettable artworks. “My inspiration for Partners began during research for the 2012 show, The Genius,” said Pageant Director Diane Challis Davy. “We discovered a portrait of the Lavoisiers, an influential husband-and-wife team doing scientific research in 18th century France. Theirs was a partnership in both science and art.” She continued, “Then, in the midst of planning a salute to movies in 2013’s The Big Picture, I began to think ‘dance in the movies’ might be a wonderful subject for an end-of-act-one finale, including a tribute to the masters of cinematic choreography and iconic dance partners, Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire.” The 2016 Pageant will feature artworks from many nations including France, Spain, Sweden, Italy and Mexico, in search of memorable art made possible by partnerships – between husbands and wives, artists and models, even artists and their patrons. This theatrical and musical journey will also consider how partnership can become an ideal Page 28
subject for masterpieces devoted to family, love and courtship, as well as historical, scientific and even fictional quests. Director Challis Davy acknowledged the challenge she’s already faced. “There are so many artworks inspired by partnerships, it’s difficult to narrow them down.” From the warm familial scenes of Sweden’s Carl Larsson to the surreal originality of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, Partners promises a doubledose of theatrical fun and surprises. Next summer’s production will find new and exciting ways to tell the stories to be found within a gallery of masterpieces, many appearing on the Pageant stage for the very first time. As a preview, Challis Davy said, “We’re planning to incorporate video and live action sequences along with a behind-the-scenes look at how tableaux are created, and how volunteers are selected for the show. We will use the lovely moonlit landscape of our amphitheater as a perfect setting for some of the sculptural tableaux.” Challis Davy also shared a bit of Pageant history that resonates with this theme. Eighty years ago, in 1936, Laguna legends Roy and Marie Ropp presented their second summer production they had christened the Pageant of the Masters. Their blend of live music, narration and living pictures effectively created the template for today’s internationally-acclaimed
The Coto de Caza News
Pageant. And that year, the Ropps concluded their production with its largest and most ambitious tableau. The first presentation of Leonardo’s The Last Supper brought national attention to the Festival and Pageant and effectively changed the course of history for this Laguna Beach tradition. With only three exceptions, The Last Supper has been the program’s traditional finale ever since. Back in 1936, Roy Ropp looked to his friends and neighbors to realize his Pageant dreams. Today, director Challis Davy depends every bit as much on the devotion and dedication of her army of volunteers who join together each summer as cast members and backstage volunteers.
Challis Davy summed up her ambitions for next summer’s Pageant. “I think there will be partnerships presented that everyone can relate to. We hope Partners will be beautiful and entertaining, and encourage our audiences to think about the people they know and love who have inspired and encouraged them.” The Pageant of the Masters will be performed nightly from July 7 through August 31, 2016. Advance tickets are $15 - $230. As an added value, a Pageant ticket also gives unlimited admission all summer long to the Festival of Arts Fine Art Show. Tickets may be purchased by calling 1-800-487-3378 or online at www. PageantTickets.com.
