No reproduction, in whole or part is permitted without the express written permission of the Coto de Caza News. Display Advertising Rates: Available upon request. Legal Advertising: The Coto de Caza News was adjudicated by the Orange County Superior Court as a newspaper of general circulation pursuant to Government Code 6000 case #A178404 on August 29, 1995 and as such is the appropriate newspaper to place legal and public notices for the South Orange County Judicial District.
Visitors to San Bernardino National Forest will be able to enjoy picnic areas, trailheads and recreational day-use sites without having to purchase an Adventure Pass on six days this year. These “fee free” days are offered across the country by the U.S. Forest Service: • June 9: National Get Outdoors Day • Sept. 22: National Public Lands Day • Nov. 11 - 12: Veterans Day Weekend “From Wrightwood to Idyllwild, the San Bernardino National Forest offers a variety of rich experiences
for visitors,” said Forest Supervisor Jody Noiron. “You can play in snow, hike the tallest peaks in Southern California, explore hundreds of miles of dirt roads and immerse yourself in nature.” For non-fee free days, the Adventure Pass costs $5 for a day pass and $30 for an annual one. Funds raised go back in to recreation sites for maintenance of parking lots, bathrooms, trash cans, signage, trailheads and other recreation facilities.
Visitors who inadvertently commit a daily Adventure Pass on “fee free” days can have it replaced free-ofcharge. Forest visitors are reminded that even though the Adventure Pass fee will be waived, other fees such as campground, reservation and group site fees will still be applicable. For more information on the National Forest Adventure Pass, visit our website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/ adventurepass.

Orange County Native serves aboard one o f t h e U. S . N a v y ’ s f i r s t “ S t e a l t h S h i p s ”
By Ricky Burke Photo by Tim Miller A 2010 Colton High School graduate and Anaheim, California, native is serving as part of the PreCommissioning Unit for the future Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116). Fireman David Bernal is assigned to DDG 116 in Bath, Maine. As a fireman Bernal is responsible for maintenance of the ship’s electrical distribution systems. “I enjoy the camaraderie with the sailors in the division that I work in,” said Bernal. DDG 116 is currently undergoing tests and trials in preparation for delivery to the U.S. Navy from shipbuilder Bath Iron Works. Arleigh Burke class destroyers measure approximately 500 feet long and are powered by four gas turbines that allow the ship to achieve over 30 mph in open seas. Destroyers are tactical multi-mission surface combatants capable of conducting anti-air warfare, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and ballistic missile defense, as well as humanitarian assistance. Fast, maneuverable, and technically advanced, destroyers provide the required warfighting expertise and
operational flexibility to execute a variety of missions. “Thomas J. Hudner Jr., a naval aviator who retired as a captain, received the Medal of Honor from President Harry S. Truman for displaying uncommon valor during an attack on his element leader, the first African American naval aviator to fly in combat, Ensign Jesse L. Brown,” said Cmdr. Nathan W. Scherry, commanding officer, PCU Thomas Hudner. “On 07 May 2012, Secretary Mabus announced that DDG 116 will be named in Captain Hudner’s honor. Today, as the Navy’s finest 300 Sailors crew the 66th Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer, they do so with a tremendous amount of honor, pride, and sense of duty. We are extremely honored to be able to carry Captain Hudner’s values and legacy forward so that they are never forgotten. We are proud to be able to carry out our missions in defense of our country’s freedom and values, and humbled to be part of the Hudner family.” Bernal has carried lessons learned from his hometown into his military service. “Growing up, I learned the values of hard work and taking with you as much as you can from your job so
you can move on to the next chapter in your life,” said Bernal. With a crew of over 300 sailors, each crew member’s job is important to the smooth operation of the ship. The jobs range from weapon handling to navigation. Bernal has military ties with family members who have previously served and is honored to carry on the family tradition. “My older brother served in the Marines for five years and did a tour in Afghanistan,” said Bernal. “I’m proud to carry on his name doing my part serving in the military.” Bernal’s proudest accomplishment was graduating boot camp. “We had several dropouts in my division throughout the eight-week course. Completing boot camp gave me the confidence needed to know I can complete anything in life I set my mind to,” added Bernal. Close living conditions build strong fellowship among the crew, Navy officials explained. The crew is highly motivated, and quickly adapt to changing conditions. It is a busy life of specialized work, watches, and drills. As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s newest ships, Bernal and other sailors know they are part of

Elks welcome eleven new members and meet their new Theme Child
Initiates Seated L to R: Terry Waer, Carl Anders, Exalted Ruler Mike Klinger, Kirk Wyrick, and Christopher Bigelow. Standing L to R: Audrey Grider, Marlene Tingley, Victoria Ross, Sandra McEwan, Jamie Pollitt, Monica Marcal, and Delores Roberts. By Andy Costello The Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks conducted their monthly new member initiation welcoming eleven local residents to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. New Elks from Mission Viejo are: Christopher Bigelow, Sandra McEwan, and Carl Anders. Lake Forest residents are: Monica Marcal, Delores Roberts, and Marlene Tingley. New Elks from Rancho Santa Margarita are Kirk Wyrick, and Victoria Ross. Audrey Grider of Laguna Niguel, Jamie Pollitt of Trabuco Canyon, and Terry Waer of Fountain Valley also joined the local Lodge. Exalted Ruler (Lodge President) Mike Klinger invited the new members to their first social event on Monday when the Elks hold their annual Memorial Day picnic and service. The Elks will pay tribute to our veterans, our fallen military heroes, and active service men and women. “We are so privileged to have many members who are veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars as well as members who are presently serving abroad. We are especially proud of our World War II veterans who are still active members of our Lodge. Many of these men and women will attend our Memorial Day service and picnic and will pose for our annual Veterans Day photograph. The event is also a fun outing for members and their guests with food, music and dancing. You won’t want to miss it.” In other Elks news, Exalted Ruler Klinger and his officers recently returned from the California, Hawaii Elks Association Convention in Page 10
San Diego where they attended conferences and seminars on Elks charities and Lodge management responsibilities. The highlight of the Association was the introduction of the Elks Theme Child for the 2018 Elks year. This year’s Theme Child John, was born with a rare chromosome anomaly called partial Trisomy 16p. Early-on one of the more significant issues John had to deal with was hypotonia. This means low muscle tone which affected the strength throughout his body. John began receiving physical therapy through the Elks Major Project in his home when he was just 10 months old. Today the two year old is attending preschool two days a week; He is pulling to stand by himself and walking with assistance. Through the love and generous support of the Elks, children like John are getting much needed physical Therapy so they can play, explore and be as independent as possible in their lives. The Elks Major Project raises funds to staff twenty-seven (27) Therapists in California and Hawaii who made 18,794 in home visits treating over 351 special needs children this past year. The Therapists also conducted 43.968 preschool vision screenings and drove a total of 376,530 miles in their work. The final day of the annual convention features a walk by the Exalted Rulers of each of the 170 Association Lodges. Each Exalted Ruler presents the total of the funds raised by his or her Lodge for the year for the Major Project. Exalted Ruler Klinger was proud to announce the Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley

Christie Brinkley’s Hamptons Tower Home for sale!
America’s most popular supermodel, Christie Brinkley, has put her longtime Hamptons estate on the market asking $29.5 million. The 20acre estate in Bridgehampton, called Tower Hill, is now far too large for empty nester Brinkley and though it was perfect for raising her daughters, it is no longer practical for a single woman with three children who are now young adults. Like many celebrities who require safe places to park their wealth, Brinkley has invested in real estate, concentrating in the Hamptons at the tip of Long Island. She has been a resident there for years and though originally a California “surfer girl” as a youth, the 64-year-old “Uptown Girl” now calls the Hamptons home. Named for the century-old observation tower that was built as part of the main house in 1891, Tower Hill is sited on more than 20 private open and wooded acres, the threestory traditional main house has six bedrooms and five and a half baths, while the guest house and artist’s studio add another two bedrooms and

two baths totalling over 11,000 square feet of living space. Charmingly eclectic, the home is pure Christie - subtly sophisticated and at the same time whimsical. Included are a large country kitchen and family room, gym, office, four fireplaces, multiple stone terraces and a fourcar heated garage. Grounds with rolling lawns, flower and organic vegetable gardens and walking trails also include a tennis court, pond and heated swimming pool. The property was totally restored in 1998 by Christie and her then husband - architect Peter Cook. Since the acreage is 200 feet above sea level, from the observation tower, one can see the Atlantic Ocean, the south shore of Connecticut, Gardiner’s Island, and the North Fork Peninsula. Raised in Southern California, Christie Brinkley has lived what many would call a fairytale life beginning with her move to France after high school to study art. Moms Orange County Honors Women’s Health Leader And “Mother Of The Year”
MOMS Orange County held its annual “Healthy Beginnings, Bright Futures” fundraising luncheon at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel in Anaheim, bringing together nearly 200 supporters and community members and raising more than $60,000. The luncheon also recognized honorees for MOMS Orange County’s “Mother of the Year” Award, and the Dottie Andrews Leadership in Maternal Health Award. Starting the program, Richard Cohen, PhD, a child development expert and former director of Project ABC at the Children’s Institute, Inc., as well as Heather Huszti, PhD, chief psychologist at CHOC Children’s Hospital—both spoke on the topic of infant and adolescent mental health. Daniel Patterson, Founder and President of Patterson Perspective in Newport Beach, and parenting coach, teen life coach, consultant and writer, was Master of Ceremonies. Community partners for the event included St. Joseph Hospital, Hoag Hospital, Athena Group Consulting, LLC., CHOC Children’s, Union Bank, Kaiser Permanente, Disneyland Resort and PIMCO Foundation. The transformative work of MOMS Orange County was apparent when the “Mother of the Year” Award recipient, Melanie Soto, took the stage. Soto accepted the award and shared her story of working through challenges to become the kind of parent she always wanted to be. Soto and her husband gained confidence and support in their parenting journey through MOMS Orange County’s programs including Mommy and Me Classes, home visitation, Taller Para Papas and more. The Dottie Andrews Leadership in Maternal Child Health Award was presented to Julianne Toohey, M.D., in recognition of her lifetime of service and impact on the health and well-being of mothers, children, and families in Orange County. Dr. Toohey is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for the UC Irvine School of Medicine, where she is Health Sciences Clinical Professor and Clerkship Director of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine in the Dept. of Ob/Gyn. She also serves as Co-Director of UCI’s Initiative to End Family Violence. Dr. Toohey established her practice in 1994, serving predominantly low-income pregnant women in Orange County—her patients often uninsured and vulnerable to chronic health conditions like diabetes and heart disease. An educator and practitioner, Dr. Toohey serves as Perinatal Director and Vice Chair of the Women’s and Children’s Department at St. Jude Medical Center, the Perinatal Director of St. Joseph Hospital, and is the attending perinatologist at nearly every birthing hospital in Orange County. She served as board member for MOMS Orange County for 13 years, with a passion for reaching out to at-risk women to improve their birth and maternal health outcomes. “We are deeply grateful for the community’s support in making this event another great success,” said MOMS Orange County CEO Pamela Pimentel, RN. “To have these health leaders and supporters of mothers in one room is a powerful experience every year. The programs, resources and people at MOMS Orange County are truly giving families the tools they need to navigate parenthood and have a bright future. Folks were also privy to a silent auction which for grabs were a Disneyland Resort Superhero Package (4 park-hopper passes), 1 night stay at a Disneyland Resort hotel and a Marvel superhero gift basket; tickets to Taylor Swift at the Rose Bowl; Anaheim Ducks Package – 2 Plaza Level tickets and a Corey Perry autographed jersey; and a 2 Night stay at the Anaheim Marriott. Event funds will enable MOMS Orange County to continue to expand its critical work in supporting women and their families at one of the most crucial times in their lives — when they first take on the enormous responsibilities and challenges of motherhood. For over 25 years, MOMS Orange County has been helping at-risk mothers and their families have healthy babies by providing access to prenatal care, health screenings, infant development screenings, health education and referral services through monthly home visits and group classes. Mothers receive one-on-one education and support during pregnancy to help increase their chance of delivering a healthy baby. After babies are born, the focus turns to promoting their healthy growth and development, so they grow up happy, healthy and ready to learn. failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitarshredding, bass-slapping, mindblowing rock band. While teaching these pint-size prodigies what it means to truly rock, Dewey falls for the school’s beautiful, but uptight headmistress, helping her rediscover the wild child within. School of Rock – The Musical features scenic and costume design by Anna Louizos, lighting design by Natasha Katz, sound design by Mick Potter and music supervision by John Rigby. School of Rock — The Musical is produced on Broadway by Andrew Lloyd Webber for The Really Useful Group, Warner Music Group & Access Industries, The Shubert Organization and The Nederlander Organization. Freshen Up Your Home, Naturally Homes trap all kinds of smells — last night’s salmon dinner, dirty gym clothes in the laundry basket, the cat’s litter box and more. When it comes to ensuring the home looks, feels and smells clean, 64 percent of homeowners have even gone to extreme measures to rid their homes of pungent odors, such as replacing a rug or carpet (34 percent), purchasing a new trash can (26 percent) or replacing a couch or another piece of furniture (17 percent), according to a survey commissioned by Filtrete Filters from 3M. But if you’ve become accustomed to the scents of your own home, how can you really know if it’s odor free? Healthy living expert, Building Biologist and author Lisa Beres shares these simple solutions to naturally create and maintain a fresh home: Kitchen refrigerator: Remove foul odors and stains from leftovers in the fridge by cleaning the drawers and shelves with a homemade cleaning solution. Simply add a few drops of natural dish soap to a bowl of baking soda and stir until it creates a thick paste. Also, store an open box of baking soda inside the fridge to help eliminate odors before they start. Replace it with a fresh box at least every three months. Candles and air fresheners: Store-bought air fresheners can contain synthetic chemicals, such as formaldehyde, which can irritate eyes,
skin and throats, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Instead, create your own air freshener by combining 10 drops of an essential oil — such as lavender or eucalyptus — with two cups of water. Pests and repellants: Pesky ants and other insects can make their way into your kitchen pantry when they’re on a mission to find food, but dousing them and your kitchen’s surfaces in toxic repellent isn’t a healthy solution for the home or the family. Instead, set a line of coffee grounds, lemon juice, cinnamon or cayenne pepper around doors and windows to create an effective barrier they won’t cross. Cooking: Help prevent unappealing cooking odors, such as fish, from spreading and lingering throughout the home by upgrading to the Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter. It helps remove odors and gases from the air passing through the filter and helps keep the home fresh for families and houseguests. Synthetic air fresheners, candles and incense only provide temporary relief from odors by masking them in one particular room but will do nothing to remove the odors from the entire home. Damp towels: Wet towels from a shower, a trip to the gym or a day at the pool can be a breeding ground for mildew to develop if they sit too long without drying. To rid towels of the mildew smell, first wash them once in hot
water with a cup or two of white vinegar. Then wash them again with a natural or eco-friendly laundry detergent. Finally, dry the towels in the dryer on high heat. To avoid mildew and associated smells in the future, hang towels up right away to ensure they dry thoroughly.
A Better Breakfast for Busy Families
Eating breakfast is a good idea, but for busy families, it can be hard to find a quick and easy option the whole family enjoys. Here are a few ideas to help get a nutritious and delicious breakfast on the table, even when you’re short on time. Set the table the night before. Put dishes, silverware and glasses in place, then add non-perishables in the morning. If you’ll want coffee, program your coffeemaker and have cups and add-ins in place. Having everything ready gives you more time
to enjoy breakfast as a family. Make things simple by getting one cereal the whole family will enjoy, such as Post Honey Bunches of Oats. Kids of all ages will love the honeysweetened taste, and parents will feel good knowing it’s a wholesome cereal that provides essential vitamins and minerals with at least 8g whole grain per serving*. With a delicious choice sure to please everyone, have the cereal within easy reach so kids can serve themselves. To help with portion control, divvy up servings into baggies so it’s easy for everyone to
get the right amount. Let everyone customize their breakfast. It doesn’t take much time to make a parfait – everyone can layer their favorite yogurt with different fruits and crunchy cereal. Make individual smoothies, or set out various cereal toppings like yogurt, nuts, berries or fruits. Keep a stash of wholesome on-thego breakfasts in case you’re running late. Whole fruit, yogurt cups, and these Cranberry Orange Muffins make it easy to grab and go, without missing the most important meal of the day. For more ways to make your morning and breakfast bunches better, visit www.facebook.com/ honeybunchesofoats. Cranberry Orange Muffins Prep Time: 20 minutes Total Time: 42 minutes Makes: 16 servings 1 3/4 cups flour 1 cup, plus 1 tablespoon sugar 4 teaspoons baking powder 2 cups Honey Bunches of Oats cereal 3/4 cup fat-free milk 1 egg 1 teaspoon grated orange peel
1/3 cup orange juice 2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon oil 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries, coarsely chopped Preheat oven to 375°F. Combine flour, 1 cup sugar and baking powder in large bowl. Mix 1 cup cereal and milk in medium bowl; let stand 3 minutes. Add egg, orange peel, orange juice and 2 tablespoons oil; mix well. Add to flour mixture; stir just until moistened. (Batter will be lumpy.) Gently stir in cranberries. Crush remaining 1 cup cereal; mix with remaining 1 tablespoon sugar and 1 tsp. oil. Spoon batter evenly into 16 paperlined medium muffin cups. Top with cereal mixture. Bake 22 minutes or until muffins are golden brown and wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan 5 minutes; remove to wire rack. Serve warm or cooled. Nutritional information and more delicious recipes are available at www.postfoods.com/recipes. *Nutritionists recommend eating 3 or more servings of whole grain foods per day (about 16g whole grain per serving or at least 48g per day).

Be prepared: Red Cross urges blood and platelet donation Because emergency situations are unpredictable, the American Red Cross needs regular donations to help ensure that blood products are available for patients at a moment’s notice. You can help ensure a sufficient supply for accident victims and others with serious medical conditions. This May, the American Red Cross is calling for donors to give blood and platelets regularly to be prepared to meet the needs of patients in emergency situations. According to the National Trauma Institute, trauma accounts for approximately 41 million emergency department visits and 2 million hospital admissions each year. In March 2015, Kevin Frame suffered life-threatening injuries in a head-on collision during spring break. He received blood products to treat internal injuries immediately after the accident and during multiple surgeries while recovering. “Without the blood and plasma products made available from donations, I would not be alive today to continue my rehabilitation journey,” said Frame, who had to relearn to swallow, speak and walk after the accident. Regular blood, platelet and plasma donations help ensure that blood is
available at a moment’s notice. In fact, it is the blood on the shelves that is used to help save lives at the time of an accident or sudden illness. In trauma situations, when there’s no time to check a patient’s blood type, emergency personnel reach for type O negative red blood cells and type AB plasma because they can be transfused to any patient, regardless of blood type. Less than 7 percent of the population has type O negative blood, and only about 4 percent of the population has type AB blood. Platelets may also be needed to help with clotting in cases of massive bleeding. Because platelets must be transfused within five days of donation, there is a constant – often critical – need to keep up with hospital demand. Donors of all blood types are urged to roll up a sleeve this May to help meet the needs of trauma patients and others with serious medical conditions. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). How to donate blood Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to
make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at checkin. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their predonation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/ RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App. Volunteers needed Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross is to become a volunteer transportation specialist and deliver lifesaving blood products to local area hospitals. Volunteer transportation specialists play a very important role in ensuring an ample blood supply for patients in need by transporting
blood and blood products. For more information and to apply for a volunteer transportation specialist position, visit rdcrss.org/driver. About the American Red Cross The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, please visit RedCross. org or CruzRojaAmericana.org, or visit us on Twitter at @RedCross.

While new parents look forward to milestones in their infants’ lives, teething can sometimes feel more like a millstone. Here are some common questions about teething and some common sense solutions. Quick Facts about Teething * Baby’s first teeth generally arrive between six and eight months. Most children will have all twenty of their primary teeth by the age of three. * Teeth frequently appear in sets of two: the two lower incisors will generally appear first, followed by the top front incisors. Molars and canines follow. * Babies vary in their development, so while many children develop teeth around the same time, each child is unique. If you have concerns about your child, consult your pediatrician. How do I know my baby is teething? Signs of teething include drooling and loss of appetite, as well as irritability and sleeplessness. It’s understandable that babies are fussy while teething; their first teeth must push through the gum tissue, which causes tenderness, soreness and inflamed gums. How do I ease my baby’s teething pain? There are several things you can do to make teething a little easier. * Chill a teething ring in the Page 24

5 ways to take your summer grilling to a whole new level The bright, sunny days of summer are your favorite time of year and when the season arrives, you spend much of your time outdoors. Your yard becomes your living room and you move your cooking to the grill. Summer is grilling season and there is nowhere you’d rather be than standing in front of your favorite grill for every game day, holiday and weekend cookout. These events are when some of your best memories are made, and now is the perfect time to make this grilling season your best yet. To do just that, here are five ways you can up your grilling game in 2017. * Switch to lump charcoal. The number one reason people grill with lump charcoal is due to the enhanced wood-fire flavor it imparts. When most think of charcoal, they inherently think of it as briquettes, and miss out on the natural advantages of its alternative - lump charcoal. Lump charcoal accounts for only 7 percent of the market, but the figure is growing steadily as more grill masters recognize the improved flavor. When you grill with lump charcoal, you’ll enjoy a quick, hot burn with less ash production. Lump charcoal is also natural and widely available in an array of varieties, allowing you to find the perfect charcoal to match your menu. * Use a Smarter Starter fluid. Lighter fluid is a mainstay around the grill when you want to get cooking quickly; however, the chemical taste it leaves behind poses a serious drawback. The reason you get that petrochemical taste is because the chemical vapor from the fluid gets into the food. You can gain the benefits of a quick burn without the chemical taste by using Smarter Starter Fluid. Made from recycled restaurant cooking oil, Smarter Starter Fluid doesn’t smell like traditional petroleum-based alternatives and you’ll never have to worry about it corrupting the taste of your food.
Smarter Starter Fluid, being made from recycled cooking oil, makes it safe for use around kids and pets. The result is 87 percent less greenhouse gas emissions, so you can feel as good about your environmental impact as you do your grilling. And, it’s perfectly suited for use on lump charcoal. * Customize the smoke flavor. Lump charcoal already lends itself a natural smoke flavor when compared to briquettes, but to really customize that flavor in your food, you can complement your lump charcoal with wood chips or chunks. Chips are smaller and more readily available in most stores, but they burn faster. Chunks burn slower and give you a better chance to lock in that unique smoke flavor. And once you pick a wood size, it’s time to pick a flavor. Apple, cherry, oak, mesquite and hickory are just a few of your options, so don’t be afraid to explore several. Whatever you’re planning to smoke, there’s a chip or chunk out there that offers the perfect flavor complement. * Take control of your temperature. In the hands of an experienced grill master, the uneven heat offered by charcoal grills is a benefit, not a drawback. Creating two zones on your grill will give you the strong, searing heat of the fire on one side, and indirect heat on the other side to cook your meat all the way through. To accomplish this, pour charcoal into one half of the grill - this will be your direct heat source - and leave the other half empty as your indirect heating zone. Heartier meats like steak can then be cooked for two minutes on each side in the direct zone and allowed to finish cooking in the indirect zone where you’ll lock in all of the flavor without burning your meat. * Targeting the topmost temperature. To be sure your food is cooked to perfection, a temperature thermometer is a must. Dark meat chicken or turkey should be cooked to 175 degrees, while white meat should be cooked to 165. Beef and lamb should
be cooked to 130 degrees (for a rare result) all the way to 170 degrees or higher for well done. And if your menu calls for brisket, keep the meat cooking until it reaches 185-205 degrees. You look forward to the summer grilling season all year. Now that it’s here, don’t let a single opportunity pass you by. Apply the tips above and you’ll take your time-honored pastime to a whole new level in 2017. To learn more about Smarter Starter Fluid, visit escogo.com/smarterstarterfluid. - (BPT)
Tips to avoid distracted driving The pace of business never seems to stop, and thanks to the convenience of cell phones, many people work on the go, even while they’re driving. Yet cell phone use is one of the most common type of distracted driving, and it claims thousands of lives and causes thousands more injuries every year. More than a quarter of all car crashes involve cell phone use, both hand sets and hands-free, the National Safety Council (NSC) reports. In 13 percent of fatal crashes, the drivers were using cellphones, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says. The actual number of cell phone-related accidents is likely much higher, since many states don’t yet compile and report data on cell phone use following a crash. Employers take up the issue Recognizing the ethical and liability issues that arise when employees drive while distracted, employers across the country have begun implementing distracted driving policies. Typically, these policies prohibit employees from using cellphones while driving on company time. In January 2017, the NSC reported
that Cargill was the largest privately held company to prohibit the use of mobile devices, including hands-free technology, while an employee is driving on behalf of the company. The ban also covers work related calls while commuting to and from work, even if employees are driving their own vehicles. “There is a time and place for doing business, and it’s not while you’re driving,” says Melanie Burke, director of health and safety at Cargill, a Minnesota-based privately held company with 150,000 employees around the world. Even Cargill’s Chairman and CEO David MacLennan is subject to the ban. In announcing the policy to employees in late 2016, MacLennan noted he was 138 days into cellphone free motoring. “It’s been liberating,” he told employees. NSC data shows about 20 percent of Fortune 500 companies have instituted cell phone bans, and of those, just 1 percent believe the ban affected productivity. Replace risk, keep productivity Taking care of business doesn’t mean you have to risk a crash. Here are six ways to keep up with the pace of business without using your cell
phone in the car: * Use an automated response app to let callers know you’re driving and can’t take their call at the moment. These free apps allow you to personalize the response and set your phone to automatically reply with a text message to incoming calls or texts. * If you’re driving a vehicle outfitted with communication technology, use its “do not disturb” feature to unplug from calls and texts while behind the wheel. * Use shared calendars to block off times when you’ll be on the road and unable to answer a call. The calendar item will help alert coworkers and anyone else connected to your calendar when you’ll be out of touch and when they might be able to reach you again. * Remove temptation. A study by AT&T found 62 percent of drivers keep their phones within reach in the car. Put yours away where you can’t see or reach it. You can place it in your purse, briefcase or messenger bag, and place the bag in the back seat. Further reduce distraction and temptation by turning your device off before stowing it. * If you absolutely must take a call
while on the road, pull over in a safe location. If a call comes in while you’re driving, allow it to go to voicemail until you’re safely pulled over, then return the call. * Be aware of other dangerously distracting behaviors, such as putting on makeup, tying a necktie or eating while driving. Do all your dressing and personal grooming before you leave home, and if you must snack while driving, choose food that is easy to manage, like a granola bar (unwrap it when you’re stopped), rather than something messy like a burger with all the fixings. “Before we had cellphones, if you had to take a business call while on the road, you would pull over and find a pay phone,” says Burke. “Productivity was fine and business got done. When it comes to time behind the wheel, safety is everyone’s most important job.” - (BPT)

Time-Saving Tips for Busy Moms
It’s no surprise that mothers make compromises every day. A recent survey of 1,000 American moms by Green Works naturally derived cleaners revealed that 57 percent admit to turning down bedroom time with their mate to clean the house. This number soars to 74 percent for new moms. In addition, the survey found that moms don’t get to take breaks for special occasions. In fact, half of all moms reported cleaning the kitchen after a special meal on their own birthday and even Mother’s Day. Thirty-six percent of new moms reported cleaning up the mess on their first Mother’s Day. When it comes to keeping a clean home, moms will also compromise plans with friends. Half of the moms surveyed admitted to turning down time with pals to do laundry, and 64 percent responded that they have cancelled fun activities in order to clean. Even with all of these cleaning compromises, 90 percent still admit to feeling guilty for taking time for themselves. “The truth is that moms have a house full of cleaning priorities and not enough time to get it done,” says Amanda Mahan, blogger for
Green Mommy in a Plastic World and creative director for Green Works. “The logical solution becomes compromising personal time. But there are easy ways to cut down on time spent cleaning without compromising yourself or the clean.” To help busy moms keep the house cleaning manageable, while making time for the people and activities they most enjoy, Mahan offers the following tips: Five minutes to clean laundry Take a few seconds to spot treat tough stains. Don’t sort laundry before throwing it into the washer. Simply leave out garments that are likely to bleed and use the coldest water setting on the rest. Use the shortest wash cycle, then treat your load to an extra spin cycle. This will wick away extra moisture and cut down on drying time. If you have kids old enough to hit the mall, it’s time for them to start pitching in. Assign specific tasks, such as sorting or folding. Five minutes to a clean bathroom Stash stray items in cupboard organizers for easy sorting. Use a gentle cleaning wipe that is naturally derived, yet packs a punch,
such as the compostable Green Works wipes, to quickly give the mirror, countertop, faucet and sink a good once-over. Shake out the bathmat and use a few squares of toilet paper to wipe the floor. Use a disinfecting wipe to clean the toilet seat. Spray the inside with cleaner, and flush. Lastly, throw out the trash. Five minutes to a clean kitchen Stow away bulky appliances, pots and pans.
Recycle old newspapers and take out smelly trash. Stick dirty dishes in the dishwasher or fill the sink with soapy water and submerge dishes into hiding. Hit hot spots with an old T-shirt and all-purpose cleaner, wiping down fridge door, counter, stove top and sink. Do a quick sweep of the floor. Da i ly De n ta l C a r e T i p s While regular visits to the dentist’s office for routine cleanings are important for dental health, taking care of your teeth and gums each day is paramount to keeping your mouth healthy. Here are some brushingand-beyond tips to help prevent oral health problems down the road. Preventative care is imperative. Basic hygiene practices can help maintain the health of your mouth. Remember to: Regularly brush with toothpaste, floss and visit your dentist. Brush at least twice a day. Purchase a brush with soft bristles and make sure to use light pressure while brushing so you don’t wear away tooth enamel. A great option is a battery-powered toothbrush like the ARM & HAMMER® Spinbrush® ProClean®. Pay attention to your toothbrush. Does it need to be replaced? A good rule is to purchase a new toothbrush every three to four months. Speak with your dentist about best brushing and flossing practices, as well as the recommended number of visits to the dentist’s office each year. The number of necessary visits may vary depending on specific patient needs. Preventing enamel loss. Consuming too many acidic foods or soft
drinks, and a long list of other factors, can weaken enamel. Enamel loss can lead to cavities, tooth sensitivity, discoloration and other oral health problems. To help maintain your tooth enamel, try to avoid drinks such as soda and fruit juices, and foods such as those high in citric acid or sugar content whenever possible. You can also look to products such as ARM & HAMMER ® Complete Care™ Enamel Strengthening Toothpaste, which is specially formulated with Fluoride and Liquid Calcium® to help rebuild enamel. In addition, the baking soda within the toothpaste will help neutralize acids left behind by food and liquid. When to call the dentist. Between dental visits, patients may experience symptoms of oral health problems. Make sure you call a doctor if you notice: Tooth pain Tooth decay or cavities Receding gum lines Bleeding of the gums Increased tooth sensitivity Discoloration of teeth Lumps on the lip or in the mouth or throat To learn more about how to protect your teeth, visit www.myoralcare. com.

Fitness Facts the Experts Won’t Tell You By Carolyn Blevins You’re going to be sore somewhere. It’s just a fact of life and you know it. If you take a person who is essentially a physical lump and that lump suddenly starts a fitness routine, the lump gets sore, someplace. Even a well conditioned, athletic person will be sore when they incorporate a new activity into their usual fitness routine. Fitness in one sport or physical activity oftentimes doesn’t translate well, meaning that I can run five miles a day and still find myself wheezing my way through an aerobics routine, complete with burning muscles, strangled gasps for breath and thoughts like, “Whose stupid idea was this, anyway?” running through my head. And even with my five-miles-a-day capability, please don’t ask me to walk hills. My fanny will still be aching days later. I’d rather run a hill than walk it. Why? Because that’s the way my muscles are trained and because of that, running hills doesn’t make them sore and burning. Walking hills does. Muscles are creatures of habit. They get use to being used (or not used) in a certain way and it takes a bit of coaxing to get them to adjust to new circumstances. So what’s the answer to sore, achy muscles? Gentle stretching and another moderate workout. You need to coax the soreness out of the muscles while at the same time gently continue your new routine. The key word here is gently. Gentle stretching, gentle, varied workouts and rest periods. If I’m starting a walking routine, I might try for a half mile my first couple of days (based on my current fitness level and my dislike of walking) with gentle stretching before and after. If there’s going to be any sore and achy muscles involved, they’ll hit no later than Day Three. On that day, rather than taking the day off, I’ll do my gentle stretching and maybe walk a flat quarter mile, followed by more gentle stretching and then take Day Four off. The burning, aching muscles are caused by lactic acid buildup. Lactic acid is the waste product built up by working muscles. If you run your car, you burn gas. But you also create waste with the exhaust. Consider lactic acid as your muscles’ equivalent of exhaust. It needs to go away or we’ll poison our fitness efforts. Gentle stretching, varied workouts and intermittent “rest days” relieve the aches while also teaching your muscles to work more efficiently, burn fuel more effectively and lessen the amount of lactic acid buildup which occurs. The workout that seems to leave you a near cripple today will your “light” workout in a month or two as you fine tune your muscles and they become more efficient and stronger. And don’t forget to hydrate. Water helps flush the lactic acid out of the muscles and allows them to recover faster. Page 28
You’re probably going to look worse before you look better. Most of the ladies know by heart that cellulite is subcutaneous fat and that it’s the last to go when we diet and exercise. That’s nothing new to us. But here’s the phenomenon no fitness and dieting guru will tell you, yet it’s true and very logical: Since you lose overall body fat first, your “top layer” of fat as it were, the cellulite becomes more noticeable because it’s less buried behind other fat. In other words, for a little whileyou might actually look lumpier. Smaller, certainly, but lumpier. But it’s temporary. Keep up with your fitness routine and this temporary condition resolves itself pretty quickly. But you will be smaller. Workouts build muscle and reduce fat. Muscle weighs more than fat but it’s more compact, sleeker and obviously more toned. As your healthy muscles build and replace the fat you’re losing, you will become sleeker looking. And smaller and sleeker trumps big and lumpy any day of the week. Getting in shape is ugly. I get so sick of fitness shows and infomercials showing smiling, toned thin people in full makeup bouncing like corks in the water through their fitness routines in brand new matching sports bra and spandex pants. What most of us know logically is this and yet we still fall for the fantasy: These folks are in a studio with flattering lighting, they have stylists and makeup artists on hand and this “fitness routine” probably lasts all of 30 seconds at a pop. Not to mention God-knows-what surgical enhancement’s gone on. Let’s face it: In real life we don’t see too many natural 36Cs out there with washboard abs. I know from bitter personal experience that when you start to lose body fat, the boobs are the first to go. That’s not to say there aren’t some truly attractive, real people out there exercising. I see them sometimes. But I also know this, too, at least about my workouts: It’s not a fashion show and it’s not glamorous. I will sweat, I will be gasping for air at some point, my face will be red, my sweat-soaked hair will be plastered to my head and I’ll probably be grimacing. I will, in other words, look like hell. And I’ll stink, too. There’s nothing pretty, feminine or appealing about a workout. At least not mine, anyway. Getting in shape is work. Sometimes it’s psychological work - just getting amped up and in the right frame of mind to even get dressed out is tough some days, even for seasoned athletes. And sometimes it’s physical work sweaty, achy, wheezy physical work. After all, it’s called a “workout” not a “funout.” But here’s the thing: Once you conquer the psychological work - in other words, once you’ve gotten
The Coto de Caza News
yourself off the couch and into your workout gear and step out the door (or into the gym) and get moving - the physical workout will take care of itself. Trust me. I’ve been an athletic person (running, aerobics, biking and such) off and on for 30 years. I’ve been chubby and I’ve been thin. And during those 30 years there were prolonged periods of inactivity where all I did, and wanted to do, was eat and sit around. I used to push myself to do better each day - run farther, run faster, get sweatier, “feel the burn,” and on and on and on. I’d worry over form and technique. When running, I’d worry over time versus distance. In aerobics, I’d worry about pointed toes, breathing technique and being on the beat. I don’t worry anymore. Or very little anyway. Here’s the reason why, the key to the whole thing, and it only took me 30 years to figure it out: If I just put one foot in front of the other, the workout will come. The workout will come whether I’m concentrating on form or thinking about my grocery shopping list. The workout will come whether I run the hill in 30 seconds or 45 seconds. If I’m in our spare bedroom and jump around for a half hour, it doesn’t matter whether I’m jumping to the Black Eyed Peas or jumping while watching Seinfeld reruns. It doesn’t have to be pretty and it doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be. Disconnecting your mental self from what’s going on with your physical body can be a blessing. I’ve run big hills that I can’t specifically recollect because my brain was free-floating while my body handled the hill. When you put yourself on autopilot and let your body do with work (after all, your brain can’t run hills, can it?), working out also becomes a vacation for your mind and spirit as well as a healthy habit for the body. Someone, somewhere, is going to discourage you. It may be well-meaning and unintentional or it may be a very pointed, specific sabotage attempt. It’s just human nature that we are comfortable with the status quo - it doesn’t matter whether the status quo sucks or not - we, on some level, crave our comfort zone. If sitting on the couch and weighing 180 pounds is my current comfort zone, that’s where I’ll want to be. Is it good? No. Healthy? No. Am I happy? No. What I am is comfortable. We stick with the devil we know versus the one we don’t. And I become my own saboteur. Or family members who are used to seeing you sitting around on Sunday mornings, drinking coffee, reading the paper and noshing on bagels or donuts, are uncomfortable when you try to get up and out the door for a workout. Why? Because you have gone out of your comfort zone, thereby affecting their comfort
zone without their permission, and they don’t like it. It’s not spiteful, it’s probably not intentional and they probably couldn’t even explain it themselves. But it can be threatening. For women, this concept can be particularly difficult. No offense to men, but the world is generally conditioned to accept a man doing something that makes him happy. Going to a bar, hanging out with the guys, taking in a football game.. any activity which is entirely centered around the man’s pleasure, and only the man’s, is both accepted and acceptable. But what happens when mom does something for mom’s benefit and mom’s benefit only? You’re taking time away from the kids, away from the house, away from the spouse and making you the center of your universe for thirty whole minutes. Almost like you were a real person. Old habits die hard. Old, ingrained reactions die even harder. Everyone will get used to your new routine and the world won’t come to an end. Just be aware that discouragement, both self-generated and other-generated, is part of the game. Don’t let it take you by surprise and don’t let it hang around too long. Remember that the big giant controversy we’re talking about is a 30 minute workout three or four times a week. Keep it in perspective. If you’re not plotting to rob a bank or relocate the family to Sri Lanka, then there’s really no big deal afoot other than maybe bumping yourself up a notch or two on the mental priority list we all have running through our heads every waking hour. Big deal. And don’t take it personally. As human beings our kneejerk emotional reaction is to fear the unknown. You might fear your fitness routine because it’s new and unknown. Your family might be uneasy with your activities because it’s new and unknown, and therefore threatening. It’s not a big deal in the long run and it’ll pass. Big, life-altering changes often happen to us a little at a time, building block by building block, without us hardly being conscious of them. I wish you good luck, encouragement and a healthy sense of perspective with your fitness routine. Each step you take gets you one step closer to where you want to be. Literally. It doesn’t have to be pretty and it probably won’t be. Just keep taking one step at a time - which is really the only way they can be taken anyway, right?

ANY INFORMATION OBTAINED WILL BE USED FOR THAT PURPOSE. “NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed or trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 844-477-7869, or visit this internet Web site www.stoxposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case T.S.# 82694. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.” CALIFORNIA TD SPECIALISTS Attn: Teri Snyder 8190 East Kaiser Blvd. Anaheim Hills, CA 92808 6/1/2018, 6/8/2018, 6/15/2018, Coto De Caza News
