A 27,000 mile walk around the world for Triple Crown Hiker Corey “ Toes” Long

By Corey Long Local Coto de Caza, California native, Corey Long has walked the Appalachian Trail in 2013, Pacific Crest Trail in 2015 and the Continental Divide Trail in 2016, making him a Triple Crown Hiker. All three trails combined span 8,000 miles through 22 states. On June 15th, 2017 he takes off from his favorite childhood hang out, Huntington Beach, California to become one of five trekkers to “circumnavigate the Earth on foot” following the World Runners Association’s (WRA) rules for qualification. After many months of planning, Corey “Toes” Long’s walk will take approximately 4 years, across 6 continents, through more than 30 countries and will cover 27,000 miles. He will cross the equator at least once, and will cover every meridian line around the globe. One of the many rules of the WRA to apply for a record is that the total cumulative “time off” for a world run or walk must be limited to 25% of the total time. “Toes” as Corey Long is nicknamed

Corey Long within the hiker community, has a goal to inspire children and adults alike to get outside and walk around vigorously. “Walking is the most basic and ancient form of exercise,

yet the most underrated. Health and wellness are natural side effects of daily walking and new friendships and memories are further benefits” declares keen career pedestrian

Corey Long. He welcomes sponsors or any organization interested in speaking engagements. You can follow Corey Long’s global trek at: trekkingwithtoes.com

Celebrate Dad with Grilling and Golf This year for Father’s Day, skip the tacky tie and 6 tablespoons diced red onion give dad something he truly wants – quality time 3 garlic cloves, minced with the kids who gave him such an honorable 3 tablespoons lemon juice title. Plan an intimate family gathering with all his 1 tablespoon olive oil favorite foods and a few special touches that reflect 1/4 teaspoon ground thyme his other passions in life, such as golf. Pepper to taste Let dad savor some grilled goodness (and a 1 pound boned, lean pork chop, cut into healthy dose of antioxidants) with colorful fruit and 1-inch cubes (approximately 38-40 pieces) veggie kabobs. Healthy, hydrating watermelon is 32 cubes watermelon (1 inch each), plus extra the star ingredient of these colorful skewers, which for garnish if desired also include marinated chunks of pork. 16-24 zucchini rounds (1/2 inch) Add a low-calorie, fat-free side by serving 16 pineapple chunks, fresh or watermelon balls in a fun golf ball-shaped vessel canned (1 inch each) carved from a watermelon rind. 24 yellow or orange peppers For more recipes and carving ideas using chunks (1 inch each, approximately versatile watermelon, visit www.watermelon.org. 3-4 peppers total) Pork and Watermelon Kabobs Cooking spray Servings: 8 Sesame seeds for garnish 6 tablespoons brown sugar Combine sugar, soy sauce, onion, garlic, lemon 6 tablespoons soy sauce juice, olive oil, thyme and pepper in mixing bowl. Pour into resealable bag and add pork pieces. Seal bag, mix thoroughly and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, turning bag periodically. Remove pork from bag and reserve marinade. Thread 5 pork pieces, 4 watermelon cubes, 2-3 zucchini rounds, 2 pineapple chunks and 3 peppers on each of 8 skewers, alternating the order. Spray cooking surface on heated grill and place kebobs on grill. Grill for 12-15 minutes, or until done, turning and basting frequently with reserved marinade. Garnish with sesame seeds and chunks of watermelon. Golf Ball Serving Bowl Wash watermelon under cool running water and pat dry. On cutting board, place watermelon on side and cut off 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch from stem end, being careful not to cut too deep into white part of rind.

This will provide sturdy base. Using paring knife, cut a 3- to 4-inch round circle in top of watermelon. Use melon baller to make shallow round divots into rind of watermelon to mimic dimples in golf ball. Next, use kitchen knife to peel thin layers of rind off to expose white underneath, being careful not to cut too deep or red flesh will be exposed. Try to get as much of green rind off so it will resemble a white golf ball. Hollow out watermelon with spoon or scoop. Place on tray and add watermelon balls to serve.

The history of father ’s day and any traditional present to fathers.

Father’s Day was founded in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd. Its first celebration was in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who reared his six children in Spokane, Washington. After hearing a sermon about Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a

similar holiday honoring them. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father’s birthday, the pastors hadn’t enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. It didn’t have much success initially. In the 1920s, Dodd stopped promoting the celebration because she was studying in the Art Institute

of Chicago, and it faded into relative obscurity, even in Spokane. In the 1930s Dodd returned to Spokane and started promoting the celebration again, raising awareness at a national level. She had the help of those trade groups that would benefit most from the holiday, for example the manufacturers of ties, tobacco pipes,

Since 1938 she had the help of the Father’s Day Council, founded by the New York Associated Men’s Wear Retailers to consolidate and systematize the commercial promotion A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father’s Day celebration and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized. US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation. Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress. In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus “[singling] out just one of our two parents”. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

Lindsay Ramar and Mr. Harrison with Alex Rheinheimer, Mariano Alario and team Photos by McCool It was Lindsay Ramar aboard Mr. Harrison who claimed the title in the $25,000 Markel Insurance Grand Prix at the Blenheim June Classic I. Third to go double-clear, Ramar held onto the lead with a time of 37.08, even as three more combinations finished fault-free. As an amateur rider, this class is her first $25,000 win. For the opening grand prix of

Michelle Parker and Doriena

the summer, FEI course designer Anderson Lima of Brazil designed a solid 1.40m track that tested riders over sixteen efforts. Rails fell throughout the course, though the oxer-vertical combination at fences 7A and B heading away from the back gate fell nearly ten times. As Lima predicted, time proved to be a factor in the first round with fourteen of 37 competitors incurring time faults,

some of whom would otherwise have been clear. Fourteen riders advanced to the jump-off where Ramar’s slick turns and smart decisions on course gave her the win. “I thought it was a friendly track but I knew it was going to be a race in the jump-off,” she explained. “Everyone was putting nine steps from one to two in the jump-off, and I knew that if I put eight steps that I would have an edge right out of the gate. I knew that it would also enable me to turn back faster to fence three.” Ramar, who trains with Mariano Alario, joked about simply trying to stay on as her horse put great effort into each jump. Her adaptability between fences proved to be the winning strategy as she decided to balance and add a stride to the last fence in order to ensure a doubleclear finish. Along with the blue ribbon, Ramar earned a SmartPak cooler, an engraved Blenheim pewter, and a pair of Roeckl Sports gloves. The win marks Mr. Harrison’s first grand prix victory. The talented jumper was named after and bred by Hunter Harrison, who breeds McLain

Ward’s “HH” horses. Ramar imported him last year from Europe and plans to continue competing in grand prix classes with him this week and going forward. Stay tuned for the highlight events of the weekend: $30,000 Blenheim June Classic I Grand Prix is coming up on Saturday and will be followed by the $25,000 USHJA WCHR West Coast Hunter Spectacular and USHJA Foundation Fundraiser “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” on Sunday. The 2017 NAJYRC Selection Final trials continue on Friday and conclude on Sunday. Blenheim EquiSports, an equestrian event management company based in San Juan Capistrano, CA, produces events in three locations: San Juan Capistrano, Del Mar and Las Vegas, NV. The events include USEF “Premier” rated hunter-jumper shows featuring multiple grand prix events, a Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping North American League event, USHJA International Hunter Derbies, Pony Finals, Medal Finals and more. E l k s P r e s e n t t h e M e a n i n g o f F l a g Da y By Mike Klinger Photos by Heather Dueitt The Fourth of July is traditionally celebrated as America’s birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. A schoolteacher, B. Cigrand, arranged for the students in a Wisconsin Public School, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as ‘Flag Birthday’. Inspired by three decades celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 – was officially established by President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916, then President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day. The Mission Viejo / Saddleback Valley Elks #2444 followed the tradition of honoring our flag with a Flag Day Ceremony last Saturday and BBQ to follow. Ex alted Ruler, M ike L o n g , started off the program leading the Pledge of Allegiance, Invocation by Chaplain Lane Keran, then Master of Ceremonies, Past Exalted Ruler Jim Humphrey introduced Past Exalted Ruler, Norm Jones, who read the History of Flag Day and the Elks Tradition. Americanism Chairman, Jim Humphrey, reinforced the meaning of, “Our Flag – Respect and Defend Her”, with his speech outlining various views of the public and how we cherish our nations’ symbol. Leading Knight, Mike Klinger explained to the guests the meaning of each 13 folds of a flag, a process performed when a flag is lowered or handed to a widow at the burial of a veteran. As Klinger read the 13-fold procedure, Purple Heart recipient and Veterans Chairman, Dennis Lumley, 4-Year Trustee Dave Tucker and Treasurer Bill Bongartz demonstrated

The brief program ended with singing God Bless America, Benediction by Chaplain Lane Keran and ER Mike Long thanking everyone for attending this year’s Flag Day Ceremony, and please join us for our BBQ on the patio of hamburgers and hot dogs. The Mission Viejo/Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge #2444 is celebrating 48 years of service to Saddleback Valley Communities. It is one of 10 lodges in the Orange Coast District of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) whose headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois. Look no further than your freezer for Dad’s perfect gift Bill Cosby once said, “Fatherhood is pretending the present you love the most is soap-on-a-rope.” As children all over the country prepare to honor their dads for Father’s Day or a special birthday, it might be time to say “no” to the soap and ties and give him what he really loves - a home-cooked meal. In a survey of more than 2,000 American adults, Harris Interactive asked men and women about the best gifts for their dads. While a new tablet or smartphone came in at No. 1, the second thing dads want most is a home-cooked meal. For most of us, tablets and smartphones might be out of reach, but a home-cooked meal is just what the budget ordered. And what home-cooked meal do dads love the most? According to a study (featured on the Today Show) that examined the intersection between food taste and gender, men tend to prefer salt-fat combinations (burgers, pizza, chips). When it comes to comfort food, men turn to steak or stews. Simply put - men like meat. So this year, when it’s time to honor your dad, consider hosting a family barbecue with all of Dad’s home-cooked favorites. Whether you choose mouth-watering steak burgers, bone-in ribeyes or fingerlicking good Kansas City barbecue, the options are almost endless for a home-cooked meal that Dad (and your friends and family) will love. If you don’t know where to start your menu planning, you can find

some great barbecue ideas online. Be sure to check out the recipe and cooking tips from The Kansas City Steak Company. Simply select your favorite category and you’ll receive helpful tips and tricks for a delectable meal with recipes created by talented chefs and home cooks across the country. With more than 600 recipes to choose from, you’re sure to find just the right meal to honor your dad. Ed Scavuzzo, president of The Kansas City Steak Company, says that summer is becoming one of the company’s busiest times of the year. “As life gets more complicated, more families are using special days like Father’s Day to reconnect. We provide everything you need to host the perfect outdoor barbecue - except the grill.” Once you’ve selected the perfect meal for your dad, don’t forget to check out these top 10 grilling tips to maximize flavors and minimize flare-ups. Whether your dad wants to navigate the grill himself - after all, it is his day - or he allows you to take over for the day, grilling your meat-of-choice to perfection is easy when you follow a few simple rules. There’s even a grilling app to give you on-the-spot tips and timing. So this year when it’s time to honor your dad, look no further than your computer, your creativity and your freezer for a gift he’ll treasure memories made together enjoying a home-cooked meal. -(BPT)

The man cave: Give Dad a space all his own

Man cave, manspace, manctuary ... whatever he calls it, it’s Dad’s special place away from the rest of the house. This Father’s Day, give Dad the ultimate gift and make him his own man cave. It’s easier than you think, and a thoughtful gift that says to Dad, “I love you, and you can run away from us now.” Step 1: Identify the space The optimal man cave is secluded, has a lockable door and is 100 percent Dad’s to own and decorate. Examples include garages, basements, dens, attics or for the bookish types, studies. When locating Dad’s man cave, consider this - it’s his to own, decorate, use and entertain in however he chooses. He will clean it (or not) how he sees fit ... although you can encourage him with a heavy-duty vacuum, like the RIDGID Wet/Dry Vac. Step 2: Clear it out and outfit it Dad needs a blank canvas to create his masterpiece. Clear out all the boxes, industrial-size cleaning and paper products and any other knickknacks you’ve stored there. Locate the focal point of the room and think about what he’ll put there. For sports-loving dads and his friends, this will probably be a big screen TV. For the DIYer and builder, it’s where his workbench goes. * Paint it. A fresh coat of paint does wonders. In one glance, it can tell you that you’ve entered the “man room.” BEHR paint experts recommend dark blues, greens or reds for a man cave, with accents of charcoal blacks or chocolate brown. * No matter the dad, you’ll want to set him up with durable storage options that can handle anything from power tools to whiskey stones, like a Husky Page 12

9-drawer Mobile Work Center, $249 or the Husky 48 inch Floor Cabinet, $379. It’ll also withstand every day wear and tear and look great years from now. * Does Dad like giant TVs? Don’t run the risk of having it crash to the ground. Get a mounting kit, like the Level Mount Adjustable Fixed Mount, $47.99. If you’ve got questions on how to install, ask an associate when you’re picking it up. Step 3: Stock it Next, fill ‘er up with goodies to keep him busy for days. Whether these gifts are for his projects or just for relaxing, Dad deserves ultimate setup. * If Dad likes to entertain or just stay refreshed while working, an ice maker and mini fridge will keep him from having to leave his new favorite place. Check out the Magic Chef 27-lb Portable Ice Maker ($199) and the SPT Mini Refrigerator, $169. * Dad like toys? Hook him up with the latest innovation in power tools - lithium ion batteries. They hold their charge four times longer than traditional ni-cad batteries. For newbies, the Ryobi ONE+ 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Drill and Impact Driver Combo kit or the Ryobi ONE + Ultimate Combo Kits are both great choices to get Dad drilling. For the fully-stocked DIYer, try the Ryobi 18-Volt ONE+ 18-Gauge Cordless 2 inch Brad Nailer. If it’s hand tools he’s after, you can get lifetime-guaranteed Husky 7-Piece Ratcheting Mobile Wrench Set. * Give him something cool to show off with his friends. Check out the Defiant AmorMax 3D Tactical Flashlight, $29.97, which can shine the length of three football fields and work even while submerged in 30 feet of water; a Kerogrator Beer Keg Fridge,

The Coto de Caza News

$499 or an LED headlamp like the Defiant 7 LED Headlamp, $17.97 (you’ll be shocked at the uses he’ll find for this). * Let him choose his own adventure with new Project Cards from The Home Depot - load it up with the amount needed for Dad’s next project and he can track the balance with no fees. If you’re helping Dad, you can also be added to the account to use the card when you run out for supplies. Step 4: Break it in Every new space needs a housewarming party, including caves. Invite the guys over and encourage Dad to show off his man cave’s sweet style.- Put together tubs of soda, beer and water, order the wings, arrange easy table snacks like chips and salsa, and let them have at it. Cheers to this mancutary.

Do ’s and don’ts of shopping for dads and grads Father’s Day and graduations are coming up, and that means you’ll have to think of appropriate gifts for these heralded champions. You don’t need to spend a fortune to make gift recipients happy, all you do need to do is put some thought into their presents. A few tips and tricks will help you pick out a gift the recipient is sure to love. Here are some do’s and don’ts for shopping for dads and grads: Do: * Know what Dad enjoys. Does he like to cook? To read? Enjoy a specific sports team? It’s easier to buy a gift he’ll enjoy when you tailor it to his tastes. * Consider giving your grad cash. Whether he or she is graduating from high school or college, there will be late-night pizza needs that pop up, and that money is sure to come in handy. * Check your area for unique experiences. Being a tourist in your hometown can be easier than you think - whether it’s a trip to a local street fair, a specialty beer tasting at nearby watering hole, or even an afternoon at the ball game, sometimes sharing the experience can be the best gift.

* Spread your gift out through the whole year with a subscription to Netflix for Dad’s movie obsession, Hulu Plus for TV-lovers or Pandora for your grad with a music library that rivals Billboard’s Hot 100.- Almost all online streaming devices from TVs to Blu-ray players and even a sound bar from LG can give him access to his subscription. *Grads would love a place to plug in their music, and a docking station is perfect for everything from visiting a friend’s dorm room to just lounging around the apartment. With the ability to wirelessly stream from both iPhones and Androids, LG’s dual docking station can play from any phone in the area and keep them charged in the meantime. Don’t: * Buy Dad a tie. Beyond being cliche, with today’s casual workplace, he probably has more than enough already. Nothing says “forced smile” like a tie. * Buy your grads gift card for specific stores. By now, they’ve got their own flair and style, and you’ll run the risk of missing the mark. Best to throw a cash card or two in the mix, and call it the “gift of shopping.” * Give your grad the customary

graduation pen - it will be “lost” or act as the resident paper weight until he/ she moves out. * Buy exercise equipment unless you know it will be used. Just because you think Dad should start exercising, doesn’t mean he shares your enthusiasm - and you’re implying he needs to lose weight (not what he wants to hear).

* Skimp on technology. It changes quickly - that’s why stores have those clearance tables. No need to break the bank, but don’t buy something that’s outdated the moment you walk out of the store. Garage spac e isn’t just for cars anymore

The word garage, when looked up in the dictionary, has a simple meaning: a building or indoor area for parking or storing motor vehicles. By and large, this definition sums up exactly what comes to mind for most folks when they hear the word. But for some folks, garages are so much more than a space to park the family minivan and store the cumbersome and unattractive trash and recycling bins. Instead, they are functioning spaces of the home that, in the eye of the homeowner, serve just as much purpose as a kitchen or a bathroom and deserve just as much attention to detail. More and more, people are using garages as space to actually live in. It isn’t just extra room anymore. Since the 1950s, most garages in North America are of the “attached” variety, meaning that they are part of the actual main home and not a separate building on the property. From music studios to man caves, art spaces to playrooms, garages are quickly becoming more integral parts of the family home. They are heated and cooled. They are equipped with cable and Internet capabilities. They are accessorized with attractive lighting and flooring choices. While wall cabinetry units may still house things like a yard rake

and a collection of tennis racquets and lacrosse sticks, they are also being chosen to integrate in such a fashion that the garage is truly seen as another room in the home, no matter what the intended end use of the square footage. The gateway to the garage, of course, is the garage door. Garage doors, even though they impact the exterior look of the home, have not always been given as much careful consideration, as a design element, as the rest of the house. But now, more than ever, garage doors are getting special treatment in the design arena - both from the exterior and interior perspectives. A consumer using garage space as an art studio may choose a door with more window panels, as to increase and enhance the natural light that comes into the space. The parents of a budding rock band musician who uses the space as a performing and recording area might need to take into account the ability of the door to reduce the noise carrying to other parts of the house. Garage spaces can even be beautifully appointed to serve as living rooms, sunrooms, and a variety of other entertaining spaces that integrate seamlessly with the design and decor of the rest of the home. A ground-breaking addition to

the garage world is the new Trento Collection, distributed by Amarr, a company that has been a leader in the garage door industry with decades of innovation and design. Available in an almost unlimited number of looks, doors in the Trento Collection can be customized to fit the architecture of any home. Unlike traditional garage doors that operate via a series of springs, rails and tracks along the ceiling, Trento Collection garage doors showcase revolutionary technology and Italian design, featuring a patented overlap design that allows the door to open by folding neatly in half without any ceiling hardware to clutter the

overhead space in the garage. This allows for a Trento door to take up far less space and appear significantly sleeker on the inside and outside than the traditional garage door. So give your garage another look. It is a fine space for doing the things that traditionally make us think of garages, of course, but take a look at your garage space with a fresh eye. The space can be so much more. Entertaining space, work space, a space for a personal hobby that you’ve always wanted in your home but could never figure out how to have. The possibilities are endless. -(BPT)

Center Court and John French Ace the $10,000 United States Hunter Jumper AssociationInternational Hunter Derby Winners Abound with Special Awards

John French celebrates the win aboard Center Court with EquiFit Groom’s Award winner Daniel Soto and Blenheim EquiSports’ Melissa Brandes Photos by: Captured Moments Twenty-five derby horses took to the grand prix field on Friday afternoon for the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby at the Showpark Ranch & Coast Classic. It was John French aboard Center Court who emerged victorious, leading both rounds and finishing with a two-round total of 383. Truly a magical victory, the handsome bay turned eight years old this week and this spectacular win marked his eighth derby victory. Topping the pros,

junior rider Augusta Iwasaki and Small Adventure took home the overall red ribbon with an outstanding two-round total of 359. The judging panels drew from all over the country, with Chris Wynne (VA) and John Roper (TN) comprising one panel joined by Bill Ellis (FL) and Kathryn Griffiths (CA) who made up the second panel. Thomas Hern designed a flowing yet challenging track for the classic round. Riders who returned for the handy round were

then tested through both tight turns and options for long gallops. With a score of 88 + 7 bonus points from Panel One added to 89 + 9 bonus points from Panel Two, and 3 high option points, French and Center Court earned an impressive 199 in the second round, acing the competition. “In the Handy, you needed to turn pretty tight on the back side of the jumps. I wanted to make sure that [Center Court] was following me and landing on the leads so it would be really smooth,” French described. “He couldn’t have been better in the Handy.” French noted that Susie Hutchison has been working with the horse since the Blenheim Spring Series and came to help them prepare for the derby. “It meant a lot to me that he won because I know she put a lot of time into him,” he said. This derby title wrapped up a successful show for French and Center Court, who were Champions in the High Performance Hunter division earlier in the week. Going forward, he has plans for Center Court to make his USHJA Derby Championship debut this August in Lexington, Kentucky. Along with the tri-colored ribbon, French won the Roeckl Sports Winning Rider Award, taking home a pair of Roeckl Sports gloves, and the Blue Ribbon Blankets Winning

Trainer Award. It was Center Court’s owner, Kristen Hiller of Hiller Farms LLC, who won the Balmoral Winning Owner Award. Center Court performed beautifully over the jumps but also looked impeccable, earning his groom Daniel Soto the EquiFit Groom’s Award for Best Turned Out Horse. As she did in the Spring, Augusta Iwasaki won The Plaid Horse Highest Placing Junior Rider Award. The action in the grand prix field continues this weekend. Saturday afternoon highlights include young show jumpers competing in the $7,500 Interactive Mortgage Horses 10&U Futurity, followed by a solid group of competitors, including Will Simpson, Rich Fellers, Richard Spooner, Nayel Nassar and more, in the $60,000 Grand Prix of California, presented by EQU Lifestyle Boutique. Blenheim EquiSports, an equestrian event management company based in San Juan Capistrano, CA, produces events in three locations: San Juan Capistrano, Del Mar and Las Vegas, NV. The events include USEF “Premier” rated hunter-jumper shows featuring multiple grand prix events, a Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping North American League event, USHJA International Hunter Derbies, Pony Finals, Medal Finals and more. $1.5 Million Raised at Roaring ‘20’s Themed Gala for Pacific Symphony PHOTO CREDIT: Ann Chatillon Glitz, glamour and decadence—it was the cat’s pajamas and the bee’s knees all rolled into one! More than 430 guests roared their way back to The Jazz Age for a night of flappers and speakeasies to celebrate Pacific Symphony’s 2017 Gala! Tassels flew and knees knocked as the Charleston became the rage again and Gala attendees learned first hand why the 1920s were called “roaring”! The exuberant, freewheeling popular culture of the decade came alive with a thematic evening that included a stylish reception, a ritzy gourmet dinner and sensational entertainment by a daring aerialist, Symphony musicians and the Jazz Age sounds of JT & Friends. Tunes such as “Sunny Side of the Street,” “Blue Skies” and “Bill Baily” set the tone, as the evening proved to be a rip-roaring success—netting more than $1.5 million for the Symphony’s artistic and education programs! Chaired by last year’s gala co-chair, Symphony Board Member Ginny Davies, this swanky event took place at the Hotel Irvine. Along with the gala committee, Davies created a lavish evening that sparkled with festive, good-natured fun—recalling a time at the end of World War I when a new sense of prosperity and freedom emerged and life picked up momentum. “We are thrilled that the evening was a success, bringing in much needed funds to support Pacific Symphony’s activities in the community. The roaring ’20s were the inspiration for the ambience and all the energy. Guests enjoyed having time to relax and just be,” says Davies. The evening’s guests arrived at 5 p.m.—gussied up and looking like they’d stepped out of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel—passing by a row of stunning vintage cars before finding themselves in the midst of a hotsy totsy speakeasy (an illicit establishment that sold “hooch” during the 1920s when Prohibition was in full swing). They were a mere Lindy hop away from a night they would never forget! Inside, the speakeasy dazzled with bouquets of red roses and gold leaf, and six stunning models in gold floor-length art-deco gowns added to the ambience. Guests enjoyed a little “giggle water”—either from the gold, towering eight-level champagne fountain that bubbled and fizzed (adorned at the top with a beautiful live flapper), perfect for picture taking; or from the 1920s-era selection of cocktails, such as the Side Car and Mary Pickford. Don’t forget the “swizzle stick”! Guests also kicked back in the lounge area, where they were entertained by a spiffy band, with a singer and dancers, while others tried their luck in the casino, where gaming table were hopping with roulette, blackjack and craps. A giant paper moon provided another key photo op! As the reception drew to a close, guests were ushered into the grand ballroom, decked out in opulent art-deco décor glistening in shades of white and gold. Guests half expected Jay Gatsby to greet them! Dinner, created by the hotel’s Executive Chef, Michael Beck, featured cuisine reminiscent of the 1920s—with velvety cauliflower soup, cabernet poached-pear salad, sumptuous filet mignon (and lobster tail for VIPs!), plus basil-whipped potatoes with asparagus, tomatoes and peppercorn brandy sauce, among the mouth-watering delights. Following a greeting from Symphony President John Forsyte and Music Director Carl St.Clair, four Symphony musicians—Joseph Morris (clarinet), Paul Manaster (violin), Meredith Crawford (viola) and Timothy Landauer (cello)—performed Haydn’s Clarinet Quartet and a Gambaro Clarinet Quartet. Then, Symphony cellist Laszlo Mezo and four Pacific Symphony Youth Ensembles members (all cellists) delighted the rapt audiences with Mancini’s “Pink Panther” and a little Schubert! As if that wasn’t enough, anyone wearing socks had them knocked off when the band played “St. Louis Blues,” as a sultry, jaw-dropping aerial act took place high overhead, before guests were treated to more jazzy tunes by JT & Friends, courtesy of Symphony supporter and good friend, John Tu of Kingston Technology. Cannon bursts of confetti kept the festivities lively, even as the spectacular evening wrapped up. Before departing, guests made sure to visit the 20s-era candy bar and were sent home with Hershey Bars that read: “Save the Date for Gala March 3, 2018”!!

Help men reclaim space of their own: Bathroom sharing tips Most couples acknowledge that women get the majority of space in the bathroom. In fact, men claim that just one-third of the bathroom is set aside for their things, according to the 2014 U.S. Dove Men+Care Hair Survey, and they often reach for items that belong to their partner, instead of products made for them. Dove Men+Care, which offers hair care products made specifically for men, has partnered with wellknown home improvement duo, Mark and Theresa Clement, to help men reclaim a bathroom space of their own. The Clements, who are spacemaximizing pros through their own personal experiences and frequent client requests, dole out some helpful tips for sharing a bathroom with your partner: * Mark suggests, “Even before you start organizing your space, talk about what you’re looking for! Do you like the top shelf-or do you prefer the bottom? Are you frustrated by open shampoo tops or soap left on the shower floor? Speak up! It can be helpful to organize your space together.” * Try to keep in mind that sharing space is all about compromise. Some need more cabinet space while others need more space in the shower. Theresa advises, “Try to be flexible with your partner’s requests! I love

having my products easily accessible, but I know Mark does, too. Do your best to divide space according to your needs and always respect your partner’s space.” * Play with boundaries. Creating structure will remind you which area is yours...and which belongs to your partner. The Clements love “his-andhers” shelves or shower caddies and also recommend customized drawers or cabinet space if you’re looking to invest in your home. * Stock products for both of you. About nine in 10 men have borrowed their partners’ products, according to the 2014 U.S. Dove Men+Care Hair Survey, but many women wish they didn’t. To stop the cycle, find a product he likes, such as Aqua Impact Shampoo from Dove Men+Care Hairand keep using your favorites! * While you may not have an eye for decor like Theresa, putting your own stamp on the area is important. “Don’t forget about decorations,” she says. “Moving in together means creating a space for his and her tastes. Explore the colors and themes each of you prefers and find a way to combine the two for a unique style.” Jumpstart your way to a happy bathroom, with the full range of Dove Men+Care products, and these great tips from Mark & Theresa. -(BPT)

Tips for men to look and feel their best all summer long

Let’s face it: summer is the season when everyone wants to look and feel their best. Warm weather and long days mean everyone’s heading outdoors, hanging with friends and enjoying the best of the season. Even the guys are looking great from relaxing at the beach, to putting down the golf greens, to walking the city sidewalks. This summer men can look and feel perfect all day long with the following helpful tips. Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy experts Dr. Francesca Fusco, a leading dermatologist who specializes in scalp and hair care, and celebrity stylist Jen Atkin, share some helpful tips for men as they head into the summer season. Protect the scalp: One area men often forget about protecting is the scalp and any and all outdoor activities call for a generous application of sunscreen. “It is important to think of the scalp as an extension of your face. The skin on your scalp is highly susceptible to UV rays,” says Fusco. When spending time in the sun, especially between the peak hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Fusco

recommends dispensing sunscreen on a cotton swab and dabbing it along the part and hairline. Prolonged sun exposure can cause damaging burns that lead to a dry and flaky scalp. Fusco says that guys’ best bet is to “apply generously and often. If no sunscreen is around, wear a hat for foolproof protection.” Lather, rinse, repeat: When out and about in the summer, perspiration is highly likely. “It is important to shampoo after working up a sweat because inadequate scalp and hair hygiene can lead to buildup of oil,” Fusco says. Reach for a shampoo that is packed with nourishing ingredients. “A clean, well-nourished scalp is a thriving scalp,” Fusco says. The perfect style: Don’t be afraid to switch up your look to reflect the easygoing nature of summer. One of the easiest ways is to change up your hair cut. “Many guys are nervous to try something new, but changing up your look is simple and can help to boost your confidence,” says Atkin. “Most men go right for the clippers and buzz it all off when the weather gets hot.” Not ready to take it all off? “Another

great option is to go for a style with shorter sides but keep length up top. It is easy to maintain and will grow out nicely too.” Complete the transformation with some new clothes to complement the new look. Stay hydrated: When heading out for an early morning jog or any outdoor workout, don’t forget to grab

a bottle of water. Fusco recommends drinking at least two liters a day during the summer to replenish fluids lost by sweating. Your overall health, from your skin to how you perform in your sports game, will also benefit from the extra hydration. Opt for an insulated water bottle to keep water cool while out in the heat.

Dote on Dad with a Backyard Brunch Brunch isn’t just for mom. This Father’s Day, make eggs, toast and bacon on the grill for a breakfast that’s sure to spoil the man of the house. Not sure how to make eggs on the grill? It’s easy! Crack an egg into a cut-out hole in toast set on a cedar plank, then sprinkle with a little cheddar and an Applewood rub for smoky grilled flavor. “To complete the meal on dad’s favorite outdoor tool, cook the bacon in a shallow disposable foil pan next to the eggs,” said Chef Kevan Vetter of the McCormick Kitchens. “Once the bacon is almost done, I love to brush it with a honey-cinnamon mixture, then grill it directly on the grates for a few minutes to add a candied crisp.” For more grilling recipes and tips visit www.grillmates.com, and check out McCormick Grill Mates on Facebook. Summer Fun for Kids Activities that foster a love of reading

While it may seem easier to let kids beat the heat by spending lazy days in front of the television or tablet, parents should take advantage of the many learning opportunities the summer offers. Why is learning so critical this time of year? During the summer months, many children will lose some of the skills they obtained during the school year. Students who lose reading ability over the summer rarely catch up. In fact, research from the Annie E. Casey Foundation shows that 75 percent of students who are poor readers in third grade, a critical grade for literacy skill building, remain poor readers in high school. Improved learning, one child at a time To help children keep and develop this essential skill, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) has joined forces with Macy’s to help keep kids laughing and learning with enriching summer activities and children’s book favorites. The key to helping children maintain and even improve their literacy skills over the summer is providing access to quality books that they can choose based on personal interests. When children have books readily available to them, they are motivated and empowered Page 24

to read, helping improve their overall success in school and life. Macy’s is helping to ensure children have access to high-quality books through its Be Book Smart campaign. The store invites customers nationwide to give $3 at their local store to help provide a book for a child in need. As a thank you, customers get $10 off a purchase of $30 or more, plus 15% or 20% off storewide. 100% of the proceeds go directly to RIF to provide books and learning resources to children who need them most. Customers not only give children the opportunity to build their literacy skills, but also the opportunity to experience the magic and power of books. Inspire your reader As a parent, you can help increase your child’s reading ability. Whether it’s playing games, singing songs or taking a trip to the local library – use this time to create new experiences together. Adopt some of these everyday activities to help your children thrive during the summer months: • Boost your child’s vocabulary by talking about everything under the sun. Visit the library and check out books for the entire week. Pick one about

The Coto de Caza News

• •

• •

birds or insects and go on an adventure walk to see if any live in your neighborhood. Reading is contagious, so let your kids see you reading books, magazines and even cereal boxes. Have books available in your child’s reach. Play the alphabet game by finding letters starting from A-Z while in the car or on a walk. Play easy word or rhyming games with your child. Use sidewalk chalk to make a mural with your family.

Don’t forget to title your masterpiece. • Have a “book-nic.” Grab a blanket, snacks and books to celebrate a beautiful summer day. Help your kids retain the essential skills they learned in the classroom and plan for a season full of new adventures in reading. You can also provide books and reading adventures for kids who need them most by visiting your local Macy’s store this summer and giving $3. Visit www. macys.com/rif for more details. For Sale: Frank Lloyd Wright Waterfall Home On His 150th Birthday Out of over 500 structures built from Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs, there are residential homes, museums, churches, commercial buildings, mausoleums and more stretching from the United States around the world. He not only concentrated on the plans, but paid special attention from the building site to the interiors, designing the furniture, lighting fixtures, stained-glass windows and decorative ceilings. Most of Wright’s work was inspired by his appreciation of the simplicity and functionality of Japanese design where large walls of Shoji doors could be pulled back to expose calm gardens that became an integral part of the whole living experience. During his career, Wright created four design styles: Prairie, Textile, Organic and Usonian. Out of these designs have come many of the features we use and love today such as the open floor plan, radiant floor heat, which he began using in 1935, and glass walls and doors. TopTenRealEstateDeals.com has rounded up five of the most interesting Frank Lloyd Wright houses that are currently or recently on the market. “Frank Lloyd Wright’s Running Water Home” One of Wright’s most interesting homes and a stunning location was built in 1955 in New Canaan, Connecticut in the hemicycle, or horseshoe shape. Tirranna, the native American word for running water, encompasses 7,000 square feet of living space on the Noroton River and a waterfall along with 15 heavily wooded acres. In recent years, Tirranna was owned by memorabilia mogul and philanthropist Ted Stanley and his wife, Vada, who carefully restored the home’s original gardens and replaced any previously sold loose

Page 26

items designed by Wright with reproductions. The home’s most striking feature is the curvature of Tirranna and its glass walls which offer a panoramic view of the Noroton River and a dramatic waterfall. Unusual for Wright in its amenities and more adapted to busier lifestyles, larger families and need for more guest space, there is a rooftop observatory with telescope, a caretaker’s suite, a guest studio, gold-leaf chimneys and the master suite has his-andher baths. Overall, there are seven bedrooms and nine baths. Also included are a large barn, swimming pool patio, tennis courts and sculpture paths to the river’s edge. Doug Milne of Houlihan Lawrence is the listing agent. With the death of his parents, Ted and Vada’s son, Jonathan, listed the property for sale with all the proceeds to be donated to charity. Tirranna, Frank Lloyd Wright on a grand scale and lovingly restored, originally priced at $8 million; it has been reduced to $7.2 million.

Protect your eyes year-round from UV exposure

Eye protection may not be a top priority for people when they are going about their daily lives, but it should be. Protecting your sense of sight is extremely important and often overlooked. All individuals should protect their eyes so they can stay sharp whether they’re on a snowy mountaintop, watching a football game, or simply driving to work. Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. Wearing a pair of comfortable sunglasses while you are staying active outdoors will not only prevent eye strains and squinting - which will help keep you looking younger, longer - but can actually Page 28

help protect eyes from cataracts, keratitis and other eye ailments as well. When selecting sunglasses, look for a pair that will be lightweight and durable, so it will be comfortable to wear, and hold up to your daily activities. Charmant Titanium Polarized Sunglasses for example, are made with pure titanium, a hypoallergenic metal that is 48 percent lighter than conventional metals and is perfect for all seasons. Titanium is used in everything from airplanes to surgical instruments, so you know it will last in a sunglass. To protect the delicate eye area, look for a lens that has UVA and UVB protection as well as a polarized lens to reduce glare, which is much more harmful when it’s reflected off of the snow. Make sure your lenses offer the best visibility possible so they don’t interfere with your activities. Lenses with anti-smudge, anti-static, and water-repelling properties keep the lenses free of debris that can block your vision. Invest in your sight. Your vision has an important role in maintaining your active lifestyle. Invest in your sight by ensuring you wear the best in corrective lenses and sunwear for you. Many people need their vision corrected through eye glasses or contact lenses. If you choose contact lenses, wearing sunglasses to prevent glare and protect your eyes from UV light is still very important. If you prefer to wear eye glasses, a pair of prescription sunglasses is ideal, to be worn whenever you are outside in daylight. These prescription sunglasses

The Coto de Caza News

will provide the best possible coverage in sunlight while also correcting your vision. Either way, one should look for a quality pair of sunglasses that will provide consistent optical clarity throughout the lens, and a durable frame that will last. Don’t forget to protect the sensitive skin around your eyes as well with a sunscreen that has at least SPF 30. Even if the sun isn’t shining bright the UV rays can still penetrate the cloud cover. Make a broad sweep. Sometimes one layer of protection just isn’t enough. If you have fair skin, or light colored eyes, you may want to wear a hat in conjunction with sunglasses on a regular basis. These physical traits are more prone to skin cancer and suncausing eye disease. Although sunglasses do wonders in protecting the eyes, UV rays can still reach the eyes and the surrounding skin through the sides and top of the sunglasses. Wearing a hat will help to reduce the sun exposure and prevent uncomfortable eye strain. A wide brim hat offers sun protection to your skin as well as eyes, creating natural shade and reducing strain. Choose a hat with a dark, nonreflective underside of the brim. This will help reduce UV glare from reflective surfaces like water or snow. Staying active is great for your overall health, but be sure that you are safely engaging in activities. Taking steps to strengthen and protect your vision will help ensure that your eyes will be safe and healthy for years to come.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 844/477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site www.stoxposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case CR17-1025. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale.
