Santa Margarita High School Celebrates the Class of 2017 Hundreds of family, friends, and faculty gathered at the UCI Bren Center on Friday, June 2, to celebrate Santa Margarita High School’s graduating Class of 2017. The graduating seniors now join the Santa Margarita High School alumni community of approximately 10,400 members. The celebration was attended by The Most Reverend Kevin Vann, Bishop of Orange, Rev. Gerald M. Horan, vicar of faith formation for the Diocese of Orange, Greg Dhuyvetter, superintendent of schools, as well as Santa Margarita High School administrators. Valedictorian Evan Deakin (Oxford University) received the highest GPA and earned head of the class honors addressing the Class of 2017 at graduation. Alexander Burke (Dartmouth College) held the second highest GPA and represented the Class of 2017 as the salutatorian also addressing the class. The class was also represented on stage by Dylan Field (University of Southern California), this year’s recipient of the Caritas Award. Selected by faculty and staff, the Caritas Award honors the student who best exemplifies the school’s charism of Caritas Christi, the love of Christ. During the ceremony, Santa Margarita High School Principal Ray Dunne took students on a trip down memory lane reading answers from a freshman class survey where the students were asked, “What advice would you give to incoming freshman?” While some focused on dress code or the best lunch foods, others gave advice on how to best succeed and make the most out of their first year at Santa Margarita. All students shared the sentiment that Santa Margarita was truly a kind and welcoming community. Dunne applauded the graduates on how much they accomplished since their freshman year and thanked them for choosing Santa Margarita. “It has been an honor to be your high school principal over these past four years,” Dunne said. “I have seen you learn a great deal, get accepted to colleges far and wide, have tremendous athletic success, perform on large stages throughout the county, laugh and smile with your peers, and share your love of Christ.” He concluded his remarks with a passage from “Oh the Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss. 7 steps to secure your home while you’re on vacation Warmer temperatures, budding trees and blooming flowers are all lovely parts of spring, but what you really look forward to is the start of vacation planning season! Deciding where to go and what to see, making arrangements and planning your wardrobe are all exciting aspects of summer vacation planning. But before you pack up to leave on your getaway, be sure to take care of the most important asset you’ll be leaving at home - your home itself. “Before going away on vacation, homeowners do a lot of things to prepare for the security and safety of their home while away, including stopping the mail, powering down electronics and turning off water and gas,” says Emily Lewicki, brand manager with Coleman Heating and Air Conditioning. “Additionally, it is important to keep in mind that a home’s temperature needs to be monitored, which can easily be done by using a programmable thermostat.” While you’re savoring the fun of your vacation planning, here are seven steps you also should take to prepare your home to remain secure while you’re away: 1. Stop the mail. Home safety experts agree: a stuffed mailbox is a sign of an empty home. The United States Postal Service allows you to request a vacation hold on your mail up to 30 days before your departure date. Go to holdmail.usps.com to see if this service is available in your area. You should also put newspaper and package delivery on hold, too, as
uncollected newspapers or parcels in front of your house could also alert others that you’re not home. 2. Turn off water and gas. If a water or gas leak occurs while you’re not there to address it, the emergency could cause significant damage to your home. You can reduce risks by turning off water flow to appliances like the clothes washer. To conserve energy and money, you can also turn off the gas flow to your water heater. 3. Adjust the thermostat. You don’t need to spend money to heat or cool your home to a comfortable level when you’re not there to enjoy it. Turn down the thermostat, but don’t turn your HVAC system completely off. Extreme temperatures can harm your home and its contents. A programmable thermostat can take care of temperature adjustments for you while you’re away. If you don’t already have a programmable thermostat, consider installing a model like Coleman’s Hx(TM) thermostat. The touch-screen interface makes it easy to program the system, plus a free downloadable app allows you to control the thermostat from your smartphone, no matter where you travel. Just be sure to leave your internet connection active at home so your thermostat can communicate with the app while you’re away. 4. Put lights on timers or sensors. A well-lit home looks lived in and is less appealing to burglars. Put outside lights on sensors so they’ll turn on when the sun goes down. Use timers to turn interior lights on and off at appropriate times.
5. Prep your kitchen. Go through the refrigerator and pantry and throw away any food that could go bad while you’re away. No one wants to come home to smelly, spoiled food. Empty the trash and arrange for a neighbor to put the trash at the curb on your scheduled pickup day. Unplug all small appliances like the coffee maker, toaster ovens, food processors, etc. 6. Power down electronic devices. Items like computers, TVs and phone chargers all draw power while plugged in, even if they’re not switched on. Turn off and unplug electronic devices to reduce power usage in the house and protect electronics from power surges while you’re away. 7. Secure the garage. This is especially important if your home has an attached garage with direct access into your home. Most garage doors have a simple bolt lock that can be engaged from inside to prevent the door from being raised. Remember to also lock the door from the garage into your house. Everyone looks forward to vacation. With some simple prep, you can ensure your home stays secure while you’re away. Control mobile data costs by connecting to Wi-Fi at home American’s use of computers has shifted dramatically in the last five years. In the past, desktop computers were the main tools for accessing the Internet and communicating with others. Today, mobile devices like smartphones and tablets are taking over. The use of mobile devices has skyrocketed, with nearly 7 out of 10 U.S. adults (68 percent) having a smartphone, up from 35 percent in 2011, according to the Pew Research Center. Tablet computer ownership is growing too, with 45 percent of adults owning this type of mobile device. Mobile devices are popular because they provide instant access to virtually anything a person wants to do. From watching videos to online shopping and interacting on social media, mobile makes any task easy - and it’s all within an arm’s reach. Along with this move to mobile devices comes a sharp increase in mobile data usage. Many Americans are quickly learning how expensive data on mobile devices can be. One easy way to control mobile data costs is to connect mobile devices to your Wi-Fi network at home. Simply go into your devices’ settings, select Wi-Fi and make your home connection your default option. Most mobile devices will then automatically connect to your Wi-
Fi when at home and reduce your mobile data consumption. This is a useful technique, but what if you live in one of the 18 million households across the United States that does not have access to “traditional” wired Internet or are stuck with a slow connection? The best solution for these households is satellite Internet. Hughes, the inventor of satellite Internet, has recently announced their new HughesNet Gen5 service.
HughesNet Gen5 is the first and only U.S. satellite Internet service to offer Federal Communications Commission (FCC) defined broadband speeds - 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload from coast to coast. HughesNet Gen5 high-speed satellite Internet even comes with built-in Wi-Fi making it easy to connect wireless devices at home. For these 18 million households, HughesNet Gen5 is a major breakthrough, providing speeds much
faster than the slow DSL that many of these consumers are currently using. In addition to fast speeds and builtin Wi-Fi, HughesNet Gen5 also comes with generous, affordable service plans. It is no longer necessary to rely on mobile data at home. Get the most out of your devices with a reliable, high-speed connection. HughesNet Gen5 lets you do more of what you love online, wherever you live. Learn more about HughesNet Gen5 at www. hughesnet.com. - (BPT)

Story and Photos by Mike Klinger “We are having a Beach Party for our returning troops and the Elks are Invited!”, stated Command Team Advisor CLB-11, Mary Reynolds, wife of Lt. Col. Pat J. Reynolds, Commanding Officer. That is all the notice the Mission Viejo Elks needed. Past District Deputy, Harvey Boelts, organized the team, pulled in our lodge chef, caterer and member John Feitz and down to Marine Corp Base Camp Pendleton we traveled to serve the Beach Party Dinner to Marines and their families. In 2016, the Mission Viejo / Saddleback Valley Elks #2444 adopted Combat Logistics Battalion 11 unit of 300 Marines and have joined the team on numerous occasions at Camp Pendleton to serve breakfast and dinner for preand post-deployment. Also planned was a dinner for the wives at their “Tacky Ball” after the Marines had deployed to an unknown region near Afghanistan. The Combat Logistics Battalion has returned and a welldeserved Beach Party and down-time was in order. Lodge Chef, John Feitz, brought his self-contained kitchen trailer where he prepared, in the parking lot, BBQ chicken, pulled pork sandwiches, mac-n-cheese, green salad, green beans, watermelon and all topped it off with two varieties of brownies. Then at 5:30pm the “dinner bell rang, DINNER is served!” As the wind finally died down, over 250 Marines and their family members crowded into our large, white dinner tent and enjoyed the Elks home-cooked meal. As everyone passed through the two serving lines, the Marines piled their plates to overflowing with the “grub” and personally thanked all Elks for their dedication and support of their team. With belly’s full, the Marines partied with family and danced to the sounds of their base DJ as the golden sun disappeared into the Pacific. As the Elks began to clean-up and load their gear, the Elks met with Lt. Col. Pat J. Reynolds and his support team. Harvey Boelts PDDGER thanked the Marines for

Legacy Furniture Center Delights Both Buyers and Sellers
Unique Concept Changes Furniture Buying and Selling in Orange County If you don’t know the term ‘Consignment’ furniture, you will soon become familiar with it. This fascinating concept is taking Orange County furniture buying and selling by storm. Everyone seems to love the idea. Buyers of fine quality furniture are always enchanted by getting great prices. Sellers who may be remodeling or selling their home and want to sell their gently used furniture and classic antiques and put some money in their pocket are pleased to learn about The Legacy Center Furniture Consignment stores. These two remarkable stores, one in Costa Mesa and the other in Santa Ana, are often crowded with anxious buyers who rush in to see the treasures that arrived this week. The Newport News recently interviewed owner Larry Rong and asked him what is so unique and exciting about Legacy Center Furniture Consignment stores,” he said “We sell used and new furniture. We consign both new and used from various vendors and consignors. When people consign it is a 50/50 split when item (s) sell and they get paid by mail. We look for current gently used furniture. You will always find a treasure in one of our stores!,” he said with a smile. When the reporter asked how many years have you been in this profession?, he replied “Between all 3 of us over 20 years.” Fabiola Herrera, manager of our Costa Mesa store and Ivin Hauck who manages our Santa Ana location. Our owners have furniture experience from owning their own stores. They enjoy being part of our team and business plan. We all work together on ideas and goals for our future.” When asked “how long has The Legacy Center Furniture Consignment has been in their current locations? Larry said: “Our Costa Mesa store just recently opened in March 2017, it wasn’t long
Page 10
before we opened Santa Ana in April 2017,these stores are so popular we would like to open another three stores in Orange County and Los Angeles during the next two years ,”said Larry. What are some of the reasons you came up with this concept? ”Buying furniture today is very different than what it was 20 years ago. Buying furniture used to be a big financial commitment and people would most likely keep for the rest of their lives. Today people live differently and like change. Most families like to keep their home current and change their style of their home with trends especially with keeping up with HGTV. We went into the consignment business to make this dream a reality to most families by pricing our furniture at a lower price than retail. We offer UP to 20% off all products after it has been in our store over a period of time. .” Do you provide special financing such as discounts, promotions, seasonal sales. “Since our prices are already lower than most stores, when and if we discount it is a gradual discount. We like to keep both our buyers and consignors satisfied with our pricing and discounts How many people do you have on staff, and what kind of training or experience do you provide? “We currently have a twelve person staff. Many are long time furniture experts, We like to hire with some experience in design, furniture sales but also love to hire someone with no experience that just simply shares the love and passion we have in our business. We like to hire with some experience in design, furniture sales but also love to hire someone with no experience that just simply shares the love and passion we have in our business. You sound like you have a lot of satisfaction in your business, what

Set your SummerFest plans for Pacific Symphony c o n c e r t s a t P a c i f i c Am p h i t h e a t r e Tickets are on sale now for Pacific Symphony’s inaugural summer concert series at Pacific Amphitheatre, launching a new partnership between the Symphony and OC Fair & Event Center. This is an exciting new chapter for Pacific Symphony and its patrons, as the orchestra settles into its new summer home in Costa Mesa where it will perform under the stars throughout the season, giving a new audience of fairgoers the chance to enjoy its unique lineup. The SummerFest series starts July 4 with a patriotic celebration featuring the music of Bruce Springsteen and culminating in a magnificent fireworks display. Next, the season heats up on July 12 with pop star Kenny Loggins belting out his classic hits like “Footloose” and “Danger Zone.” On July 20, the B-52s will be joined by the Symphony to rock Pacific Amphitheatre with party classics like “Rock Lobster” and “Love Shack.” This year’s movie under the stars spotlights John Williams’ classic score to “Jurassic Park,” performed live Aug. 19 as the blockbuster movie is shown on the big screen.
To conclude the series, the annual favorite, “Tchaikovsky Spectacular,” bursts with fireworks for the “1812” Overture on Sept. 9. “We welcome Pacific Symphony and its patrons to Pacific Amphitheatre and look forward to giving our fairgoers and concert attendees an amazing variety of music,” said OC Fair& Event Center CEO Kathy Kramer. “This will be a season to remember.” While the location may be new, after nearly 30 years of performing at the now-closed Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, the Symphony continues to offer the same highquality experience, jam-packed with exhilarating and magical music. Patrons can expect a more comfortable and intimate experience at Pacific Amphitheatre, with remodeled seats and an inviting atmosphere. Picnics overflowing with goodies, pre-concert entertainment and the company of family and friends all remain part of the annual Symphony summer series. “Wherever and whenever Pacific Symphony performs - winter, spring, summer or fall, we dedicate ourselves to ensuring that our Symphony family has an exciting and rewarding
experience,” says the Symphony’s Music Director Carl St.Clair. “We are all so excited to begin our new SummerFest at the Pacific Amphitheatre at OC Fair & Event Center.” Single tickets are currently on sale, ranging from $25-$99. Threeconcert subscription packages for the Symphony’s SummerFest 2017 range from $63-$252. For more information and to purchase tickets, call 714-755-5799 or visit www. pacificsymphony.org. Two of the Symphony concerts are
co-produced with, or produced by, the Pacific Amphitheatre – Kenny Loggins and the B-52s – and tickets for those shows can be purchased at www. pacamp.com or at the amphitheater box office, open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 100 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa. The Toyota Summer Concert Series at Pacific Amphitheatre runs July 4 - Aug. 20. The 2017 OC Fair is July 14-Aug. 13, Wednesday-Sunday. This year’s theme is “Farm Fresh Fun.” For more information, visit www.ocfair.com.

Bright ideas to get your home guest ready
Summer has arrived and vacation season is underway. With the kids home from school, and family and friends anxious to visit, you can expect the stress of getting your home ready to be in full swing. Here are a few helpful tips that will make you a successful host and give your guests a warm welcome. Create a comfort zone No matter what size the room, the one thing you can never compromise on is comfort. A few hospitable touches will make it feel welcoming to your guests. Make sure you’re stocked with the essentials, clean sheets and a choice of firm or fluffy pillows - then add a few extras like bottled water and specialty chocolates to take it to the next level. For a final touch, display any photographs you may have of you and your guests to bring back fun memories. Remember-that bathroom comfort is just as important as the bedroom. In addition to providing any toiletries guests may need, make sure they have plenty of fresh towels. Try following the three towel rule; leave one large towel for showering, one hand towel and a washcloth in the guest room for each person. If visitors will be sharing a bathroom with other members of your family,-be sure to properly plan for the morning rush so guests don’t feel as if they are intruding on your daily routines. Freshen up Take the time to make sure your
home is ready for visitors and conduct a thorough pre-cleaning. Pay special attention to the kitchen, entryways, and other high-traffic areas to ensure you can spend more time playing hostess, rather than housekeeper. Once you are expecting guests, one of the most important rooms to clean is the bathroom. On an unprotected surface, bacteria can double in number every 20 minutes. To ensure your bathroom’s visual cleanliness, a new faucet can make all the difference. The new Moen Ashville two-handle bathroom faucet featuring Microban antimicrobial protection will help guard against stain- and odorcausing bacteria, mold and mildew. Microban technology is built-in to the faucet finish, so it works continuously, even between cleanings. In addition, the Ashville bathroom faucet comes in Moen’s Spot ResistBrushed Nickel finish to resist fingerprints and water spots - helping to make cleaning for guests less of a burden. Time to eat Cooking can always be a dilemma when you have a house full of friends and family. From deciding what everyone likes to eat and what to cook, to preparing all the meals and cleaning up, it can feel like a full-time job. Since food brings people together, next time friends and family are visiting, use meal preparation as a time to connect. Make cooking an activity by giving everyone a job in
the kitchen. When dinnertime rolls around, feel free to have guests pitch in with a few simple tasks. Ask them to pour the wine, choose the music, or set the table, and soon your visitors will be feeling right at home. Once groceries have been purchased, messes made and the food is cooked, it’s time for the dreaded clean up. A Moen survey found that when asked what their least favorite job is following a meal, more than 80 percent of respondents agreed that hand washing pots and pans was the worst; followed by putting food away and cleaning dishes. However, with the right kitchen faucet, cleaning dirty dishes can be more efficient and believe it or not,
maybe even enjoyable. Available at The Home Depot, the new Moen Haysfield pulldown kitchen faucet with MotionSense technology offers a helping hand in the kitchen. It can sense what you’re trying to accomplish and respond to what you need, the moment you need it. With a simple hand movement, you can activate water flow gain greater speed and efficiency at the sink. By taking the time to plan and prepare you’ll make the visit with family and friends special, not just for them, but for everyone. With a few extra steps you will lessen the stress and welcome the good times. For more information about Moen products, visit moen.com. - (BPT)

Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company Makes Rare West Coast Visit with the Ballet Classic Giselle at Segerstrom Center Segerstrom Center for the Arts welcomes Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company in an exclusive West Coast engagement performing Giselle, July 28 – 30, 2017 in Segerstrom Hall. One of the finest examples of romantic ballet, Giselle is the tale of love, betrayal and redemption between the peasant girl Giselle and Prince Albrecht. It was a triumph at its world premiere in 1841, and its beloved choreography in La Scala’s elegant production, especially, continues to thrill audiences. The opening night cast for this Center engagement includes ballet superstar Misty Copeland in the title role with Roberto Bolle, making his Center debut as Prince Albrecht. The music, by Adolphe Adam, will be performed by the renowned Mikhailovsky Orchestra. Giselle will be performed in place of the originally announced Cinderella. The Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company tour is being arranged through Ardani Artists. The La Scala star Roberto Bolle, will also perform with the Royal Ballet’s acclaimed Marianela Nuñez for the Saturday, July 29 evening performance and the Sunday, July 30 matinee. La Scala’s principals Nicoletta Manni and Claudio Coviello, recently starring in Giselle for the La Scala tour in China, will dance the lead roles for the Saturday, July 29 matinee. Giselle is one of the most popular and most performed classical story ballets. The La Scala production, enriched by Aleksandr Benois’ sets and costumes that are part of the Scala’s repertoire, features the original Coralli-Perrot choreography in the revival by Yvette Chauviré. Her own moving interpretations of roles such as Giselle celebrated the classical ballet tradition in all its purity. One of the most popular works in recent La Scala seasons and international tours, Giselle is now staged by the La Scala Ballet Company as a homage to Yvette Chauviré, the extraordinary artist who recently died. In her version of Giselle, performed at La Scala for the first time in 1950, Chauviré herself starred as the ill-fated peasant girl who dreamt of love and loved to dance. “The virtuosity of Giselle consists in making the technique invisible,” said Yvette Chauviré. “I studied all choreographic elements, entrances and stage exits and the ‘downtimes’ - if they can be called that - between the enchaînements: the floating of the arabesques and the breathing pose of the arms. When I was dancing, my obsession was to make people forget the physicality of the feet and Page 16
give the feeling of ‘the appearance of a breath.’” Tickets for Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company start at $29 and are on sale now at SCFTA.org, at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa, or by calling (714) 5562787. For inquiries about group ticket savings for 10 or more, call the Group Services office at (714) 556-0236. Ticket holders are invited to attend Free Preview Talks one hour prior to each performance. The Friday, July 28, 2017 Preview Talk will be signlanguage interpreted. A tour of the Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company in the USA is a rare event. This is the first time that Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company has visited the United States since July 2001 (16 years ago), when it performed at the Center and in New York State Theatre. The Company performed Sylvie Guillem’s production of Giselle and a double-bill of Amarcord and Carmen. The Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company was in the United States only twice before the 2001 tour: 1981 (Metropolitan Opera House with four different productions, among them Rudolph Nureyev’s Romeo and Juliet and Coralli-Perrot Giselle with stars that included Nureyev, Carla Fracci and Margot Fonteyn) and in 1986 (Atlanta, St. Louis and San Francisco, with Swan Lake and different doublebills). Segerstrom Center for the Arts is an acclaimed arts institution and as well as a beautiful multi-disciplinary cultural campus. It is committed to supporting artistic excellence on all of its stages, offering unsurpassed experiences, and to engaging the entire community in new and exciting ways through the unique power of live performance and a diverse array of inspiring programs. Previously called the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Segerstrom Center is Orange County’s largest non-profit arts organization. In addition to its six performance venues, Segerstrom Center is also home to the American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School, where students ages 3 – 14 are taught by acclaimed teachers utilizing the renowned ABT National Training Curriculum in studios utilized by the world’s greatest dancers and choreographers. The Center presents a broad range of programming for audiences of all ages, including international ballet and dance, national tours of top Broadway shows, intimate performances of jazz and cabaret, contemporary artists, classical music performed

by renowned chamber orchestras and ensembles, family-friendly programming, free performances open to the public from outdoor movie screenings to dancing on the plaza and many other special events. The Center’s arts-in-education programs are designed to inspire young people through the arts and reach hundreds of thousands of students each year. In addition to the presenting and producing institution Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the 14-acre campus also embraces the
facilities of two independent acclaimed organizations: Tony Award®-winning South Coast Repertory and a site designated as the future home of the Orange County Museum of Art. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is also proud to serve as the artistic home to three of the region’s major performing arts organizations: Pacific Symphony, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County and the Pacific Chorale, who contribute greatly to the artistic life of the region with annual seasons at Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

Laura’s House Luncheon Brighter Futures Raises $90,000
Alison Cotton with Adam Dodge (Legal Director, Laura’s House) and Kathy Jo Peterson
Photo by Ann Chatillon The Balboa Bay Resort ballroom was filled with colorful – and sometimes whimsical – tables of 10, each decorated with an individualized theme designed to “wow” guests at the second annual Brighter Futures Luncheon benefitting Laura’s House. It was an afternoon filled with inspiration, featuring a resilient domestic violence survivor, a spunky13-year-old advocate, a generous mother-daughter service group and a dedicated Legal Director serving more than 1,000 individuals in need every year. The fundraising event gathered more than 200 Orange County philanthropists who raised $90,000 to benefit the organization’s mission of ending the cycle of domestic violence. Guests sipped on champagne and savored delectable hors d’oeuvres and other tasty tidbits while bidding on fabulous opportunity drawing items. The prizes included one-of-a-kind experiences at luxury retreats such as the Viceroy L’Hermitage Beverly Hills, Terranea Resort, Pelican Hill, and a gourmet dinner at Oak Grill/Aqua Lounge. Other notable gifts consisted of jewelry and gift cards from David Yurman, Kendra Scott, Gorjana and Tiffany & Co, wellness and beauty baskets from Nutrivenience, Apriori Beauty, Voitenko Wellness, Madison Salon, and OrangeTwist and a fanciful pool themed basket featuring an enormous inflatable pink flamingo. Guests were ushered to the ballroom for a simple, yet refreshing and delicious lunch with a classic California cobb salad, fresh bread rolls and a strawberry tiramisu for dessert. Honorary Chair Anne MacPherson, a Anya Lee and Andrea McCallister (Director of Development & Laura’s House board member and well-known community philanthropist, Communications, Laura’s House) led a group of enthusiastic table hosts including, Patty Bucklen, Laura Feld, Integrity Housing Partners, Laura Khouri, Pat McAuley & Linda Kearns, Neudesic Pacific Hospitality Group, Casey Wolin and featured wonderful designers and sponsors such as Barclay Butera, Couture Flowers, Pottery Barn, Bold Girlz, Babes with Coffee, Kendra Scott and more. Sponsor tables were artfully decorated with colorful flower arrangements, stunning candle holders, elegant dinnerware, and for one table, a gorgeous antique Chinese porcelain vase filled with white tulips, forsythias, and guelderroses. In addition, each guest was gifted with a favor from David Yurman and a coupon from See Jane Go. “This was only our second Brighter Futures Luncheon and I was thrilled to see the dedicated community support,” said Margaret Bayston, Laura’s House CEO and executive director. “These events are very special as they give us the opportunity to celebrate the work we are able to do because we have the unwavering support of our community advocates. Our Brighter Futures luncheon is particularly gratifying because it gives us the chance to introduce new friends to our cause and the opportunities we have for them to join us.” During the program, Laura’s House Legal Director Adam Dodge, one of the only male advocates in the field, highlighted the critical community work of the nonprofit and the importance of the support, programs and education provided to victims of all ages. Following Adam was a poignant testimonial of survival from a powerful speaker and advocate. Sharing intimate details of Anne MacPherson (Honorary Chair, Brighter Futures Luncheon and Laura’s House her struggle enduring abuse from her husband while 5-months pregnant, she board member) and Margaret Bayston (CEO/Executive Director, Laura’s House) found the strength to finally end the cycle and walk away. Leslie has rebuilt a life free of violence and now is embarking in being an active advocate and creating awareness about the resources available to survivors. Honoring individuals and organizations that have made extraordinary efforts to advocate and support brighter futures for families served by Laura’s House, Brighter Futures awards were presented to The National Charity League and Anika Ortiz. The National Charity League is dedicated to improving local communities through hands-on volunteerism. For many years, mothers and daughters have generously supported Laura’s House by donating countless hours in support of the nonprofit’s cause. Rene Tuzee, CEO and Executive Director, accepted the award on behalf of the organization. Ortiz, is a 13-year-old entrepreneur and advocate, who tragically lost her older sister to domestic violence. In addition to her entrepreneurial endeavors, Ortiz is a passionate guest speaker at local schools and community groups, advocating on topics ranging from domestic violence awareness to prevention of bullying. The mission of Laura’s House is to change the social beliefs, attitudes and the behaviors that perpetuate domestic violence while creating a safe space to empower individuals and families affected by abuse. Over the past 23 years, Laura’s House has provided shelter with support services to more than 4,888 abused adults and their children and non-residential direct services including 24-hour crisis intervention, counseling, life skills education and legal assistance to over 54,956 persons. Tina Yates and Ceasar Claim the $30,000 Blenheim June Classic I Grand Prix
Hannah Loly and Zafira Win $7,500 Interactive Mortgage Horses 10 & Under Futurity
Tina Yates, Jeff Cotton, Chris Garcia and Melissa Brandes of Blenheim EquiSports Photos by McCool After a competitive afternoon of show jumping with a full audience present, Tina Yates and ACE Equestrian’s Ceasar emerged victorious in the $30,000 Blenheim June Classic I Grand Prix. Partners for less than a year, Yates and the grey ten-year-old gelding earned their top honors with consistency and precision. The three other riders in the jump-off each crossed the finish line faster than Yates, but none could match her double-clear effort. Twenty-five horse and rider combinations took to the track
Hannah Loly and Zafira
designed by Brazilian FEI course designer Anderson Lima. Almost every fence on the challenging sixteen-effort course fell at least once, and nine entries incurred time faults. The four competitors who advanced to the jump-off kept the anticipatory atmosphere alive. Lindsay Douglass went first and fast, but several rails fell as she blazed around in 38.05. Yates jumped off second and delivered a fault-free trip in a conservative 46.62 seconds. Both Katelyn Edwards and Lane Clarke beat Yates on the clock in under 43 seconds, but each picked up four faults. “In the jump-off, my strategy was just to have a nice double clear round. I didn’t go crazy fast - I just didn’t want to risk having one down,” Yates explained. She noted the many options available on course, saying that the track had to be ridden differently to suit each horse. “The horses definitely had to try hard and be careful, and in the end I think it was a nice class,” she said. Yates and Ceasar have been working together since The Las Vegas National Horse Show in November. Still a relatively new pair, they gained miles this winter in Wellington, FL, and are continuing to thrive in California this summer.
“He has a really funny personality,” Yates said. “He’s come a long way. It’s true that he’s a little bit of a goofball, but I actually think that it helps him.” For her win, Yates earned a sizable percentage of the prize money, a SmartPak cooler, and a pair of Roeckl Sports gloves. Douglass walked away with the SmartPak Fastest in the West Award for her speedy jump-off effort. Hannah Loly and Zafira Win $7,500 Interactive Mortgage Horses 10 & Under Futurity Fifteen-year-old Hannah Loly topped a field of twenty-four entries in the $7,500 Interactive Mortgage Horses 10 & Under Futurity aboard her own Zafira. Loly and her tenyear-old mare cleared the shortened course with ease, racing through the timers in an unbeatable 47.72 seconds. “I carried a pace and I stuck with it,” the young phenom explained. She was one of five double-clear finishers in a jump-off of eight riders. “I made sure when I landed to go forward right away, whereas I think some people just continued.” Loly and Zafira recently moved up to the 1.40m height in the show ring, and this was their first time competing in an Interactive Mortgage Horses 10 & Under Futurity class. The class
marked the fourth of six qualifiers in the series, which will conclude with a final at the Blenheim Fall Tournament in mid-September. Tomorrow morning, The Oaks International Grand Prix Field will host the $25,000 USHJA WCHR West Coast Hunter Spectacular and the hilltop VIP will present the USHJA Foundation Fundraiser “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” event. As hunter divisions wrap up, SmartPak Awards will be presented to riders with the most points and the highest scores from the full week of WCHR competition. After the hunters shine, the field once again will welcome the show jumpers with the final round of the 2017 North American Young Rider and Junior Rider Selection Trials. Blenheim EquiSports, an equestrian event management company based in San Juan Capistrano, CA, produces events in three locations: San Juan Capistrano, Del Mar and Las Vegas, NV. The events include USEF “Premier” rated hunter-jumper shows featuring multiple grand prix events, a Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping North American League event, USHJA International Hunter Derbies, Pony Finals, Medal Finals and more. Find fun, fresh ways to use your cherished china Sometimes collecting all the pieces to your cherished wedding china may take more time than you think. It took Jill Rogers four decades. “After 44 years of marriage, I got the soup bowls I wanted; Mama would be so proud to know I finally have exactly what she wanted for me,” says Rogers. “My mother started this pattern for me in high school, buying pieces from the area grocery store. The fact she started it was so sweet and special.” Over the years, Rogers actually forgot the name of her pattern. That’s when she turned to dinnerware giant, Replacements, Ltd. The company’s research team not only
Page 24
identified Rogers’ vintage pattern through Replacements’ free pattern identification service, they even had the pieces she needed to complete her set. “I collected pieces here and there through the years but never had more than six place settings,” adds Rogers. “We use it for special family occasions, such as birthdays and anniversaries, and sometimes we take our special china out just for us.” Replacements’ designer, Julie Robbins, hears similar stories from baby boomers like Rogers, who after years of collecting, finally completed their patterns. However, as families mature and styles evolve, boomers are increasingly asking Robbins for fun ways to refresh their treasured patterns. “They love their wedding china and are attached to it because it means so much to them, but they want to freshen it up and give their dinnerware a more current look and feel,” says Robbins. “It’s really easy to stay true to tradition, yet transform your table by adding a splash of color or different medium. Mixing and matching patterns continues to be a huge trend in tabletop, transcending all ages, from millennials to boomers.” So, how do you go about creating
The Coto de Caza News
a look that makes you want to take your vintage china out of storage and use it every day? Start by looking for complementing patterns that fit your lifestyle. “You might start with a piece that you use on a regular basis, such as a salad plate, then build around that piece by adding patterns that pull out a color, shape or feeling that accentuates the current pattern you already own,” adds Robbins. And who says your dinnerware is just for eating? Find fun ways to use it around your home. “Think outside the dining room,” says Robbins. “I inherited a set that I love but didn’t fit my entertaining style, so I took the tea cups and now use them
for notions in my sewing room. You could also use cups to hold doodads in any room of your house, while tureens and teapots make wonderful flower vases. I find bathrooms and powder rooms are great places to use old china because those rooms are often under-decorated and very antiseptic. Using old, pretty serving pieces, such as an oval vegetable or sugar bowl to hold soap or flowers, helps make those rooms warmer and more inviting.” Looking for more ideas or would like help with design dilemmas? Five Tips for Safe Summer Sun By Kevin Ronneberg, M.D. Summer has arrived. As the weather heats up, it’s critical for beachgoers and outdoor fun-seekers to be sun-safe. This begins with choosing the right sunscreen to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Equally important are these five simple tips from the Skin Cancer Foundation, which also will help you mitigate sun damage and reduce the risk of skin cancer. First, seek the shade. Simply minimizing exposure to UVA and UVB rays can go a long way toward protecting your skin. Taking a break from direct sun is especially important between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when rays are strongest. And remember, clouds don’t block UV rays. Infants under 6 months should always be kept out of the sun -- protected with clothing, an umbrella or a stroller hood. Children and adults should wear protective clothing, including wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses. Second, use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Regardless of the season, this kind of sun protection should be used on a daily basis. Most people understand the importance of sun safety during the summer months, but many underestimate the need for year-round protection. The temperature may drop, but UV rays remains strong. And the cooler temperatures may actually prevent people from realizing the extent of the damage the sun is doing to their skin. Next year, new regulations from the Food and Drug Administration will help consumers know they’re getting the right protection by prohibiting manufactures from labeling their sunscreens as
“broad spectrum” or making claims about protecting against skin cancer and aging unless they’re SPF 15 or higher. And sunscreens with lower SPF values will have to sport a warning that the product may not offer protection against the harmful effects of exposure to the sun. Third, apply 1 ounce of sunscreen to the entire body 30 minutes before going outside. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, for full SPF protection, sunscreen must be applied half an hour before sun exposure. If you are average size, you’ll need a full ounce -- or about two tablespoons -- to adequately cover your skin. Studies show that most people apply less than half that amount, losing the full benefit of the SPF protection. Reapplication is just as important as putting sunscreen on in the first place, as sunscreens tend to break down with exposure and can be rubbed off or washed off by sweat or water. So sunscreen should be applied every two hours, and immediately after swimming or a set of tennis. During a full day at the beach, one person should expect to use at least a quarter of an 8 oz. bottle of sunscreen. Fourth, do not let yourself burn. Sunburn is the most immediate and obvious sign of UV damage. When immune cells race to the injured skin site to start healing the damage, they produce the reddening and swelling. Tanning is the skin’s response to this damage and may permanently affect skin cells. While many believe a “base tan” will prevent damaging burns, that’s not the case. There is no such thing as a healthy or base tan. Finally, check your skin regularly and ask your doctor for a skin cancer exam annually. One in five
Americans will develop skin cancer. Tans and burns can be the first step. Intermittent but intense UV exposure is more closely associated with melanoma, the most deadly variety of skin cancer, than chronic sun exposure. One blistering sunburn in childhood or five in a lifetime doubles the risk of melanoma. To check yourself for signs of skin damage, inspect your skin from head to toe, looking for spots or sores that heal too slowly, new growths, and any moles or beauty marks that change in color, texture, or size. And once each year, be sure to ask your physician for a skin checkup. Sunscreens are an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. They keep skin looking young and reduce the risk of many skin cancers. They must be used properly, however. These five suggestions will help keep you and your skin safe. Dr. Kevin Ronneberg is the associate medical director at Target.
5 simple steps to creating gift baskets that rock
Graduations, weddings, birthdays, office celebrations, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and barbecues - spring and summer are full of occasions that cry out for a great gift basket. A big basket bursting with a bounty of goodies can be costly, however, if you buy a pre-made one. Worse yet, store-bought baskets can be predictable and impersonal. Creating your own gift basket can save you money, allow you to really personalize your gift and be as much fun to make as they are to receive! Not sure how to start? Follow these simple steps to create gift baskets that work for every occasion: First, pick a personalized theme. Store-bought gift baskets can be pretty homogenous - snacks, beverages, candy, etc. Instead of going with a predictable theme, think about the recipient’s favorite activities or hobbies. Choosing a theme that’s meaningful for the recipient personalizes the gift basket and will help you brainstorm just what items to include. Here are four theme ideas to help you get started creating amazing, personalized gift baskets this spring and summer: * Spice of life - Your giftee doesn’t have to be a foodie to appreciate a basket of spices that will add flavor and excitement to any dish. Frontier Co-op can help you make your own personalized spice blend to be the star of a gift basket full of seasonings and cooking accessories. Frontier Co-op’s website even has a downloadable label you can print to place on the bottle. Try their recipe for Spicy Buffalo Popcorn Seasoning: Ingredients:
1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon Frontier Organic Cayenne (according to heat level desired) 1/2 to 1 teaspoon Frontier Organic Paprika 1 teaspoon Frontier Celery Salt 1/2 teaspoon Frontier Sea Salt 3 tablespoons Frontier White Cheddar Cheese Powder Directions: Mix spices and place in an airtight jar or tin. * Go team, go! - Of course, team-themed items are a must for a sports-themed gift basket, but don’t forget to include all the extras that make watching the game so much fun. In addition to a new mitt and cap, baseball fans might appreciate a gift certificate to the best hot dog joint in town. A beer-of-the-month membership certificate and team jersey work great for football fans. * Movie night at home - Packets of gourmet microwave popcorn, all the accoutrements you need to make a rootbeer float, and a gift card for DVD rentals are sure to please every film fan. * Tea for two - For the sophisticated tea-lover, a basket of accessories like a tea infuser and teapot cozy are ideal. Boost the appeal with a selection of bulk teas packaged in beautiful or themed glass jars - it’s a great way to treat your tea lovers to all their favorites while introducing them to new varieties, too. Once you’ve chosen a theme, it’s time to pull the basket together with these simple steps: 1. Set a budget - It’s easy to get carried away when you’re buying items to put in a gift basket and overspend. It’s just as easy to under purchase, ending up with a skimpy, unsatisfying basket.
Setting a budget will help you know just how much you can and should buy. 2. Make a list - Once you’ve decided on a theme, write a list of items that fit that theme. Keep in mind list items should easily fit in a basket or other container. Organize your list with one or two centerpiece, must-have items at the top and would-like-to-have items in descending order of desirability. 3. Choose a unique container - Yes, it’s called a gift basket, but you don’t have to stick with a traditional wicker basket. Choose a container that really fits your theme. For example, a decorative plastic flower pot is a great container for a gardening lover’s basket. Your sports enthusiast might appreciate a cooler stocked with teamthemed items. 4. Stock your basket - Now that you have the container, you know how much you need to buy to fill it. Grab your list and head to the store! -(BPT)

How to Make Homemade Ice Cream for Dogs As the weather heats up, humans aren’t the only ones who start craving sweet, cold treats like ice cream and ice pops. My dog, Maggie, has long been a fan of homemade ice cream for dogs, which is made to be healthier and easier to digest than actual ice cream made for human beings. When it’s hot outside, I make her a set of these sweet treats and then give them in small amounts after a long romp around outside. I’ve perfected the recipe for my dog’s own ice cream, which I carefully designed to meet her nutritional needs without the sugar and lactose found in frozen desserts for humans. The ingredients you’ll need for homemade ice cream for dogs include one half-cup of peanut butter and one cup of unsweetened yogurt as the base. Unsweetened yogurt has very little sugar, and thanks to the probiotics (or “friendly bacteria”), it is easier to digest than milk. I also add a quarter-cup of canned pumpkin, which helps to facilitate healthy digestion in dogs and cats, and three tablespoons of white chocolate chips, which satisfies a dog’s sweet tooth but doesn’t contain the potentially dangerous chocolate compound theobromine, found in dark and milk chocolate. I use ice pop molds for my dog’s ice cream recipes, but you can also use empty cups, hollow marrow bones, and ice cube trays. First, mix all the ingredients into one large mixing bowl. It may take a while for the mixture to homogenize, since the heavier peanut butter tends to sink to the top and the cream in the unsweetened yogurt tends to rise. You can take the shortcut by using an electric blender. If you want your mixture thicker, add in a little cornstarch a little at a time.
If you want it thinner, gradually blend in a small amount of warm water. Once you’ve got everything well-blended, carefully pour the mixture into the molds, marrow bone, or ice cube tray. Freeze it for at least five hours to get it thick and hard. You can serve these treats as everyday snacks, in the same way that you might normally use dog biscuits, or you can reserve the “ice cream” for when your dog has been running a lot in hot or warm weather. You might even consider bringing some to the dog park to share!
You can modify the recipe for ice cream for dogs depending on your dog’s taste preferences. Some good add-ins for doggie ice cream include shredded carrot, apple bits, or crushed treats. There’s really no limit, but bear in mind that some common human foods are dangerous to dogs, including onions, grapes, raisins, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, avocado, and macadamia nuts. If you need any help figuring out which homemade treats to include in your pup’s diet, or balancing nutrition between treats and meals, touch base with his veterinarian for expert advice.

Summer means outdoor entertaining. Whether you’re hosting a wedding reception, a family reunion or a birthday party, you’ll want to make the backyard get together memorable. Here are some quick DIY ideas to help you get ready for a fun, stressfree gathering. Lawn prepA healthy green lawn is an inviting setting for outdoor activities. If your lawn isn’t quite up to snuff, a little last minute maintenance can help. Following are some tips from Grass Seed USA, a coalition of American grass seed farmers and academics: * Fix bare or thin spots. You may not need as much time as you think to overseed thin or bare patches - some seed germinates in just a few days. Ask the turf specialists at your garden store or university extension office for help in selecting the right seed. Seed during the early morning or evening hours, then water lightly but regularly, keeping the reseeded areas damp until the new grass grows in. * Don’t overwater. On average, a lawn needs about an inch of water per week, from rainfall or irrigation. Unless it’s very hot or you have good soil drainage, don’t water for two or three days before your party. A soggy lawn might ruin your guests’ shoes, and furniture legs could sink into the ground. * Leave a little length. Don’t mow the grass too short before the event - a little extra length will provide more cushioning for the soil and your guests’ feet. As a general rule, Page 28
wait until your grass is 3 inches tall before mowing, then cut it to 2 inches in height. Trimming no more than one-third of the blade length reduces stress on the grass and leaves enough leaf to protect the roots from the sun. Creating the ambianceBeyond the table arrangements - linens, tableware, flowers - you’ll want to think about creating a comfortable ambiance for your guests. Here are a few ideas to consider: * Throw some shade. Set up umbrellas or a shade sail if your gathering is in the heat of the day and you don’t have much natural shade. * Illuminate the area. If your get together is in the evening, create a welcoming atmosphere by setting out candles or lanterns and winding twinkle lights around trees in your backyard. If you have the space, build a simple fire pit where you can gather after dinner to make s’mores and tell stories. Transform planters and pots into nightlights using glow-in-the-dark paint. * Make it cozy. In addition to traditional seating, set out blankets, pillows and rugs on the lawn. Set up a low table and place rugs on the grass next to it to create a magical Moroccan evening. * Keep bugs at bay. Annoying flies or hungry mosquitoes can take a lot of the fun out of an outdoor party. Light citronella candles to deter mosquitoes, or make natural DIY bug spray for your guests using
The Coto de Caza News
essential oils such as peppermint or eucalyptus. Choosing activitiesYour gettogether likely already has some built-in activities (eating, for one!), but depending on the type of event, you may want to have a few additional distractions planned - especially if there are kids at the party. Try a few of these: * Revive old favorites. Classic lawn games like croquet or lawn bowling are easy to set up and are great icebreakers if not everyone knows each other. You can mix things up and create your own variations on the rules. * Spray-paint your grass. Use ground-marking spray to create giant game boards directly on your lawn.
Twister, checkers, tic-tac-toe - use your imagination! * Play putt putt. Set up a miniature golf course with plastic cups as targets, and make challenging obstacles using whatever random objects you have on hand. One of the great advantages of entertaining outdoors is that it’s usually easier and less stressful than trying to fit a large group into your home. So keep things simple and don’t worry if you don’t have time for elaborate preparations - your backyard will naturally do most of the decorating and ambiance creation for you, and you’ll have plenty of options for outdoor activities for kids of all ages. - (BPT)
