Wooden Boat Festival June 8-10, 2018
Looking for something fun to do this weekend. June 9 -10, the 5 th Annual Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival will be held at Balboa Yacht Club (BYC) located at 1801 Bayside Drive, Corona del Mar. This is yachting’s equivalent of a Concours d’Elegance and a “must-see” event open to the public; you won’t want to miss it! Last year nearly 4,000 visitors attended the free event, which also offers complimentary shuttle and water taxi service to and from Balboa Yacht Club. In addition to being able to view and board nearly 50 of these wooden treasures, there will be so much else to make Saturday a fun day for the whole family: live music, maritime art and exhibits, delicious food and libations, a silent auction, and the very popular kids toy boat building pavilion. All of this at Balboa Yacht Club in collaboration with its strategic alliance partners, Discovery Cube’s Ocean Quest, The Balboa Bay Club & Resort, Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, the City of Newport Beach, the County of Orange, and Visit Newport/Newport Beach & Co. Last year, the County of Orange officially recognized the event, with Chairwoman Michelle Steel in attendance to present a proclamation
by the County naming the second weekend in June henceforth “the Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival Weekend.” The Spirit of Dana Point will be arriving at the BYC docks as this year’s featured vessel. Built by local Dennis Holland (who started building this boat in 1970 in his Costa Mesa backyard), Newport Harbor will welcome back his originally-named Pilgrim of Newport on Friday, June 8. This 118-foot wooden schooner is lovingly cared for today by the Ocean Institute in Dana Point. If you have a show-ready wooden boat of any size and you haven’t already applied to take part in the Festival, there is still dock and onland space available. Visit www. newportbeachwoodenboatfestival. com for details. There are many ways to arrive at the Festival. Free parking and shuttle service will be available at 1600 Newport Center Drive, or catch a water taxi from one of at least four stops throughout the harbor. And, as always, the event, parking, shuttle service, and the water taxi rides are all complementary. On Sunday, the Wooden Boat Parade will proceed around Newport Harbor for all to see by a traditional

For more information, visit www. newportbeachwoodenboatfestival. com or call (949) 673-3515. ABOUT THE NEWPORT BEACH W O O D E N B O AT F E S T I VA L In just five years, the Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival, a Balboa Yacht Club event, has grown into a mustsee event for residents and tourists alike. It is a Concours d’Elegance of yachting, showcasing the most diverse and valuable collection of
wooden boats in California. This free event, which is open to the public, has been named “Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival Weekend” by the County of Orange in perpetuity. The vision of its founder, the late Ralph Rodheim, was to be a legacy event with national stature and the finest showcase of wooden boats on the west coast in the similar luxury class of Pebble Beach for automobiles. The Festival salutes the passion, time and effort the owners have put into their vessels to preserve the heritage and timelessness of seafaring adventure.

Baby on board? 8 tips for stress-free infant travel Whether it’s a quick weekend away or a weeklong adventure, family travel is a great way to bond and create lifelong memories. However, if you have an infant, you may be hesitant to pack all those bags and venture to the unknown. “With their love of a set schedule and the familiar, plus loads of gear, babies are natural homebodies,” says Sandra Gordon, baby safety expert and blogger at www. babyproductsmom.com. “Still, they can be surprisingly adaptable and getting out and about can be loads of fun for everyone. The trick is to be prepared so you can enjoy the journey and the destination.” Gordon offers eight tips and tricks that make infant travel easy so everyone can have an enjoyable vacation: Prepare the diaper bag The diaper bag is your go-to throughout your trip. Pack everything your baby might need including diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, snacks, toys, a pacifier, feeding supplies, infant formula and lots of Ziploc bags for dirty bottles, clothes, etc. An extra shirt for yourself is a smart addition as well, just in case. Pack pre-measured, dry powder baby formula Whether on the plane or out for the day, pack two to four bottles with premeasured, dry baby formula that you can mix with bottled water at feeding time. To save up to 50 percent, buy store brand infant formula. All infant formula sold in the United States is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, so store brand formula must meet the same FDA
standards as the big advertised brands. It’s available wherever infant formula is sold, such as Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club and Target. Bring a prepared bottle Bring a prepared bottle for the airport; it can help keep your baby content during the lengthy checkin process. It’s also a must during takeoff to relieve ear pressure. You can take more than 3.4 ounces of infant formula or breast milk through airport security. Tell the transportation security officer that you have medically necessary liquids at the beginning of the checkpoint screening process. Visit the TSA for more info on flying with children. Split up your stuff When packing bags you plan to check at the airport, split up the contents so that each suitcase has everyone’s clothes in it, including your baby’s. That way if a bag gets lost, everyone will have something to wear for the next few days until your bag is found. Essentials such as formula, medicine, etc. should be packed in your carry-on. Stick to baby’s schedule Babies rely on a schedule so there’s no need to disrupt it when on vacation. Try travelling around nap time for domestic flights or at bedtime for international flights. Be sure to bring along her favorite stuffed animal or blanket that she normally sleeps with so there’s something familiar to sooth her. Baby can sleep and you can relax. Avoid popular travel times Avoid crowds and save money by travelling on slower days. The day prior to holidays will always be hectic,
so opt to fly two to three days before or after to enjoy a slower airport plus cheaper ticket prices. For non-holiday travel, avoid early-morning flights on weekdays so you and your baby don’t have to compete with harried business travelers. Rent gear If you can’t bring all your gear when travelling, consider renting. Ask your hotel about rental options in the area so you can have everything you need to make baby feel comfortable without having to lug items across the country. It is an extra cost, but it also saves you the cost of having to check bulky items on the plane. Eat in or eat out early Book a hotel with a kitchen so you can make baby-friendly foods in a comfortable space. When you do want to eat out, remember that prime time for eating out with infants, toddlers and preschoolers is Sunday through Wednesday before standard lunch or dinner times (11:30 a.m. or 5:30 p.m.). Restaurants are less crowded and you’ll get faster service. Travelling with a baby gets easier every time you do it. With these tips you’ll satisfy your wanderlust without worry, plus your little one will have a great time. - (BPT)

Santa Margarita Catholic High School celebrates the Class More than 3,600 friends and family members gathered at the UCI Bren Events Center on Friday, June 1, as Santa Margarita Catholic High School’s 449-member Class of 2018 received their diplomas during the school’s 28th commencement ceremony. The Most Rev. Timothy E. Freyer, auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Orange, presided over the ceremony. Freyer was joined by Interim Superintendent Sally Todd of the Diocese of Orange, who reflected on the faith and spiritual development, academic excellence and character formation Santa Margarita provided. “You are definitely not the person graduating today that you were when you walked onto the campus of Santa Margarita,” Todd said. “You have grown in learning, wisdom and faith – yes, but also as a result, integrity as a person.” Principal Raymond Dunne and President Andy Sulick ’91 offered their personal reflections before Assistant Principals Sean Basford and John Hayek assisted Bishop Freyer with the conferral of diplomas. Select members from the Class of 2018 joined school and diocesan leadership on the dais. Niko Mancera of Laguna Niguel brought chills to the crowd with his rendition of the national anthem; ASB President Garrett Domier of Coto de Caza led the traditional tassel ceremony; and Andy Concialdi of Trabuco Canyon was recognized as the school’s Caritas Award recipient, which is given to the student that best embodies the school charism of Caritas Christi, the love of Christ. At the top of their class academically, valedictorian Rachel Kim of Laguna Niguel and salutatorian Nathaniel Torres addressed their classmates. Kim, an immigrant from Korea, will
attend Stanford University while Torres of Rancho Santa Margarita plans to study at UCLA. Kim shared with her classmates that she was confident they would go on to change the world in their own unique ways. Quoting Nelson Mandela she said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” She went on to say, “We’ve been incredibly blessed to receive an SM education … All 450 of us will have a positive impact on society in 450 or more different ways-- some of us want to be doctors, nurses, lawyers, engineers, actors, politicians, entrepreneurs, journalists, athletes, and for some of us, in this age of rapid technological change, our future jobs probably don’t even exist yet. And that is the most exciting part. The number of ways in which we can go out into the ‘real world’ and use our SM education to spread Caritas Christi, the love of Christ, is truly infinite.” Class of 2018 by the Numbers $57.8 million in scholarship offers 2,375 college acceptances $175,000 average combined SMCHS President Andy Sulick congratulates Mia Ford of Rancho scholarship offers per graduate Santa Margarita upon receiving her diploma. 449 students 148 colleges graduates will attend 73% of the class received a scholarship offer 100% acceptance rate at 208 schools 99% percent attending college 60 student-athletes to compete at the collegiate level 44 students studying the arts in college 41 schools accepted to of U.S. News and World Report’s Top 50 National Best Colleges 18 CIF team championships (2014-2018) Grads tossing their caps into the air.

Masquerade Ball FUNdraiser a Smashing Success!
Photo by Jim McCracken This year’s West County Area Guild’s 6th Annual FUNdraiser, “Masquerade Ball” was a smashing success held at the Irvine Duck Club. Folks were dressed in all sorts of attire, someone they admired, someone historical, their favorite crooner or royalty. From Zorro and his wife Elena de la Vega to a female swashbuckling pirate, the costumes were both inventive and hilarious. Magic Castle Magician Joyce Basch wandered around through this kaleidoscope of entertainment showcasing her sleight of hand encouraging guests to watch in vain to uncover her secrets of the trade. The Karaoke King kept the music going while people limbered up their voices to be ready to participate in the Karaoke Contest when the time was right. Sipping cocktails, the myriad characters munched on delightful appetizers of beef kabobs, crab delectables, and more waiting for dinner to be served. Meanwhile, costumed guests lined up to be judged in four separate categories. The funniest costume award went to the nun, Carol Dodson, and her monk, Tom Keyes. Most original costume went to Gail Daniels who simply donned a brimmed floral hat with a $2.98 price tag dangling from it – truly a Minnie Pearl, American country comedienne of Grand Ole Opry and Hee Haw fame. Best Couple Costume was awarded to the Kinkades as Robin Hood and Maid Marion. Finally, Zorro and his beloved, Elena de la Vega aptly portrayed by Stephen and Wendy Fink won for the Best Overall Costume. In between all this, warmed up voices plied their talents with a variety of music. Kenny Rogers and the First Edition would have gloried in Jim Daniels’ rendition of “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town”. Apparently, the judges thought so too as Jim was honored with first prize. A Marlene Dietrich sound-alike, Margaret Nolde, walked away with second prize as she warbled her way through the soulful melody, “Lili Marlene”. “Unforgettable” was the duet of Louise Costa and Karaoke King Roy Southerland winning the 3rd prize for Louise. Not only did the West Area Guild chapter members outdo themselves in talent, knowledge, and creativity, members picked up some great auction items – food, experiences, gift cards were the most popular offerings this year. Masquerade Ball raised about $7,500 this year to support Segerstrom Center’s artistic and education programs. This year’s event was planned and organized by co-chairs Louise Costa and Carol Strauss, West Area Guild Chairman with committee members Delphi Ballinger, Ed Cady, Gail and Jim Daniels, Diana Hardy, Susan Kinkade, Marty Olds, Margaret Ann Vincent, and Hallie Whelen. The Guilds of Segerstrom Center for the Arts is one of the largest and most prestigious support groups for a non-profit organization in Orange County. The Guilds, which is comprised of 22 chapters and nearly 1,600 members, is respected and admired for its contributions to Segerstrom Center for the Arts and is emulated by many other arts organizations around the country. Guilds members are Center ambassadors, spreading the word about the Center among their friends and neighbors and encouraging them to enjoy and use this great community resource. The Guilds raises funds for the Center, Orange County’s largest non-profit arts organization. Guilds members have contributed more than $14 million dollars in support of the Center since their organization was founded. Their support helps the Center to present its renowned performing arts series, which includes dance, Broadway shows, cabaret, jazz, classical music, family entertainment, cutting-edge theater and many free and low-cost performances and events. Close to the heart of The Guilds is the Center’s education programs that reach hundreds of thousands of young people and educators each year with performances and arts-in-education programs at the Center and on school campuses. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is unique as both an acclaimed arts institution and as a multi-disciplinary cultural campus. It is committed to supporting artistic excellence on all its stages, offering unsurpassed experiences, and engaging the entire community in new and exciting ways through the unique power of live performance and a diverse array of inspiring programs. Free performances open to the public from outdoor movie screenings to dancing on the plaza and many other special events. It offers many education programs designed to inspire young people through the arts. These programs reach hundreds of thousands of students of all ages with vital arts-in-education programs, enhancing their studies and enriching their lives well into the future. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is also proud to serve as the artistic home to three of the region’s major performing arts organizations: Pacific Symphony, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County and the Pacific Chorale, who contribute greatly to the artistic life of the region with annual seasons at Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks Honor Our Fallen Heroes
Elk Veterans gather for the annual group photo Article by Mike Long Photos by Steven Steele and Mike Klinger On a beautiful, sunny Memorial Day afternoon, the members of the Mission Viejo Elks Lodge united to commemorate our fallen United States servicemen and servicewomen. Lodge Exalted Ruler Mike Klinger welcomed more than 200 members, Veterans and other guests as they enjoyed Elks fellowship and dined on delicious barbecued hamburgers, hot dogs and corn on the cob. Exalted Ruler Klinger stepped to the podium and spoke of the true meaning of Memorial Day, stating, “Today, Americans across this nation and citizens located around the world will pause throughout the day to observe Memorial Day. Since its first official observation on May 5, 1868, when it was called Declaration Day, it has been a day of remembrance for those who sacrificed and died in our nation’s service. And while it was originally dedicated to honor Civil War soldiers, we know it today as a celebration in memory of all who have fought for and defended our right to freedom.” Next, Lodge Veterans Services Chairman Jerrie Muir took the microphone and lead the gathering to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sing “God Bless America”. Afterwards he requested a moment of silence from those assembled to show support of our First Responders and the men and women of our Armed Forces. Orange County Coastkeeper Releases 2017 Data on Human Activity in Marine Protected Areas
Orange County Coastkeeper published its latest MPA Watch report, an analysis of human activity at Orange County’s seven Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in 2017. The report is based on recent data collected by Coastkeeper volunteers who patrol local MPAs to research and protect vulnerable ecosystems. MPAs protect valuable marine environments by prohibiting or limiting activities like fishing, oil drilling or development projects. They create safe places for marine populations to grow and thrive, while also providing beautiful destinations for people to enjoy. By maintaining healthy marine environments and species within MPAs, nonrestricted waters can offer healthy fishing stocks for sport and commercial fishers. “Our data show that thousands of locals enjoyed our pristine, healthy MPAs last year. It’s all thanks to the passionate volunteers who spend their time patrolling the waters that make Orange County so special,” says Ray Hiemstra, associate director of programs for Orange County Coastkeeper. “It’s an inspiring reminder that the health of our oceans is up to all of us.” Coastkeeper reports that volunteers counted 21,176 people visiting local MPAs during its surveys. 85.2 percent of observations were onshore recreational activities like swimming, sunbathing, running and wildlife viewing. Offshore activities like surfing, diving, snorkeling and boating comprised 14.8 percent of total activity. The surveys found that more than 98 percent of
recorded activities were non-consumptive, allowing marine life to thrive undisturbed. Volunteers also counted 101 potential violations of MPA regulations. Coastkeeper says these potential violations demonstrate a need for continued community education to inform the public how to sustainably enjoy MPAs. The organization also calls for increased enforcement of MPA regulations to hold violators accountable. “When I learned that our government agencies need information on the activities occurring in our MPA in order to protect them, volunteering seemed like a great way to fill the gap,” says Lauren Hisatomi, a Coastkeeper volunteer in the MPA Watch program. “I get to keep Orange County fishable and swimmable while spending time at the beach.” Volunteers in Coastkeeper’s MPA Watch program receive classroom and field training to gather accurate, reliable information on human activity in MPAs. The program’s ongoing research ensures MPAs continue to protect our coastal ecosystems so they can be enjoyed for generations. OUNTY COASTKEEPER: Founded in 1999, the mission of Coastkeeper is to protect and promote sustainable water resources that are swimmable, drinkable, and fishable. Wellness begins at home: 5 tips for a healthier, happier home From diets to exercise routines to standing at our desks while we work, we do a lot to stay healthy. Most of the time this involves focusing on what we eat and how we move. No doubt this is an essential component to good health, but increasingly, people are realizing their home environment can have a big impact on their mood, their health and how they feel. The following are five changes in your home environment that can have the biggest impact on your overall well-being. 1. Declutter. Over the years, the stuff we own starts to pile up. Most of it we don’t need, but it’s hard to get rid of a lot of things. Maybe it was a gift, or has sentimental value. Whatever the case, it can be difficult, but going through your house and getting rid of the clothes, kitchen appliances and general clutter can be a transformative experience that reduces stress and creates a calmer home atmosphere. 2. Holistic health in your bathroom. Your day begins in the bathroom, so why not start it off right? You shower and brush your teeth, but are you aware of the health and cleansing benefits of using a bidet seat? Gynecologists,
obstetricians and urologists all recommend cleansing with water, and a high-tech bidet seat like TOTO’s WASHLET S300e offers a luxury personal cleansing system to make you cleaner and more refreshed than you’ve ever felt after a bathroom break - and it’s more eco-friendly than using toilet paper. You’ll be surprised by how this simple addition to your bathroom can benefit men and women at all stages of life. Looking for a seamless installation? Consider TOTO’s Carlyle II 1G Connect+ S300e One-Piece Toilet, which delivers all the personal cleansing and comfort benefits of the WASHLET and conceals the water supply and electrical connection. This elegant combination will complement any bathroom décor. To discover more life-changing alterations to make to your bathroom, visit totousa.com and discover what their people-first innovations can do for you and your home 3. The bedroom is for sleeping. Your mood, energy level, ambition and so much more depends on getting a full night’s sleep. To help ensure you get enough sleep, transform your bedroom into a sanctuary. If you have a TV in it, take it out and leave your
phone in the kitchen when you go to bed. Your bedroom should be a spot for sleeping and relaxing activities such as reading or meditating. 4. Color matters. The color of a room has a huge impact on your mood; in fact, the color of a room can make or break a space. As a rule of thumb, many interior designers break colors into warm and cool. Warm colors such as yellow, orange and red create an energized space and may be great options for a family room or home office. Cool tones such
as blue or green create a calming atmosphere, perfect for spaces where you go to relax and unwind. 5. Plants. It sounds simple, but it’s easy to overlook this one. Indoor plants provide the double service of boosting your mood and cleaning the air. For instance, common house plants such as a spider plant, peace lilies and a number of ferns naturally remove toxins such as formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and more from the air. This is a vital service, especially in winter. - (BPT)

Staying well-hydrated is especially important during the summer months. In addition to normal body functions, higher temperatures draw more water through perspiration, so consciously replacing your fluid content becomes essential for overall health. “Every system in your body – from reproduction and digestion to circulation, mood and memory – depends on water,” said Elizabeth Somer, M.A., R.D., and author of several nutrition and wellness books. However, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 44 percent of adults drink fewer than four cups of water per day (less than half of the recommended eight glasses per day), and in some cases, no water at all. What many people don’t realize is that beverages aren’t the only way to hydrate your body. In fact, water-dense foods such as watermelon can also boost your hydration. Sweetly flavored, low-calorie watermelon is 92 percent water and offers several nutrients along with the cancer-fighting antioxidant lycopene. Whether eaten out of hand, tossed into a salad or blended in a healthy beverage, there are dozens of delicious ways a healthy serving of watermelon can help hydrate. Crave-worthy snacks. Find fun, fresh ways to use your cherished china Sometimes collecting all the pieces to your cherished wedding china may take more time than you think. It took Jill Rogers four decades. “After 44 years of marriage, I got the soup bowls I wanted; Mama would be so proud to know I finally have exactly what she wanted for me,” says Rogers. “My mother started this pattern for me in high school, buying pieces from the area grocery store. The fact she started it was so sweet and special.” Over the years, Rogers actually forgot the name of her pattern. That’s when she turned to dinnerware giant, Replacements, Ltd. The company’s research team not only

identified Rogers’ vintage pattern through Replacements’ free pattern identification service, they even had the pieces she needed to complete her set. “I collected pieces here and there through the years but never had more than six place settings,” adds Rogers. “We use it for special family occasions, such as birthdays and anniversaries, and sometimes we take our special china out just for us.” Replacements’ designer, Julie Robbins, hears similar stories from baby boomers like Rogers, who after years of collecting, finally completed their patterns. However, as families mature and styles evolve, boomers are increasingly asking Robbins for fun ways to refresh their treasured patterns. “They love their wedding china and are attached to it because it means so much to them, but they want to freshen it up and give their dinnerware a more current look and feel,” says Robbins. “It’s really easy to stay true to tradition, yet transform your table by adding a splash of color or different medium. Mixing and matching patterns continues to be a huge trend in tabletop, transcending all ages, from millennials to boomers.” So, how do you go about creating
The Coto de Caza News
a look that makes you want to take your vintage china out of storage and use it every day? Start by looking for complementing patterns that fit your lifestyle. “You might start with a piece that you use on a regular basis, such as a salad plate, then build around that piece by adding patterns that pull out a color, shape or feeling that accentuates the current pattern you already own,” adds Robbins. And who says your dinnerware is just for eating? Find fun ways to use it around your home. “Think outside the dining room,” says Robbins. “I inherited a set that I love but didn’t fit my entertaining style, so I took the tea cups and now use them
for notions in my sewing room. You could also use cups to hold doodads in any room of your house, while tureens and teapots make wonderful flower vases. I find bathrooms and powder rooms are great places to use old china because those rooms are often under-decorated and very antiseptic. Using old, pretty serving pieces, such as an oval vegetable or sugar bowl to hold soap or flowers, helps make those rooms warmer and more inviting.” Looking for more ideas or would like help with design dilemmas? 5 simple steps to creating gift baskets that rock
Graduations, weddings, birthdays, office celebrations, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and barbecues - spring and summer are full of occasions that cry out for a great gift basket. A big basket bursting with a bounty of goodies can be costly, however, if you buy a pre-made one. Worse yet, store-bought baskets can be predictable and impersonal. Creating your own gift basket can save you money, allow you to really personalize your gift and be as much fun to make as they are to receive! Not sure how to start? Follow these simple steps to create gift baskets that work for every occasion: First, pick a personalized theme. Store-bought gift baskets can be pretty homogenous - snacks, beverages, candy, etc. Instead of going with a predictable theme, think about the recipient’s favorite activities or hobbies. Choosing a theme that’s meaningful for the recipient personalizes the gift basket and will help you brainstorm just what items to include. Here are four theme ideas to help you get started creating amazing, personalized gift baskets this spring and summer: * Spice of life - Your giftee doesn’t have to be a foodie to appreciate a basket of spices that will add flavor and excitement to any dish. Frontier Co-op can help you make your own personalized spice blend to be the star of a gift basket full of seasonings and cooking accessories. Frontier Co-op’s website even has a downloadable label you can print to place on the bottle. Try their recipe for Spicy Buffalo Popcorn Seasoning: Ingredients:
1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon Frontier Organic Cayenne (according to heat level desired) 1/2 to 1 teaspoon Frontier Organic Paprika 1 teaspoon Frontier Celery Salt 1/2 teaspoon Frontier Sea Salt 3 tablespoons Frontier White Cheddar Cheese Powder Directions: Mix spices and place in an airtight jar or tin. * Go team, go! - Of course, team-themed items are a must for a sports-themed gift basket, but don’t forget to include all the extras that make watching the game so much fun. In addition to a new mitt and cap, baseball fans might appreciate a gift certificate to the best hot dog joint in town. A beer-of-the-month membership certificate and team jersey work great for football fans. * Movie night at home - Packets of gourmet microwave popcorn, all the accoutrements you need to make a rootbeer float, and a gift card for DVD rentals are sure to please every film fan. * Tea for two - For the sophisticated tea-lover, a basket of accessories like a tea infuser and teapot cozy are ideal. Boost the appeal with a selection of bulk teas packaged in beautiful or themed glass jars - it’s a great way to treat your tea lovers to all their favorites while introducing them to new varieties, too. Once you’ve chosen a theme, it’s time to pull the basket together with these simple steps: 1. Set a budget - It’s easy to get carried away when you’re buying items to put in a gift basket and overspend. It’s just as easy to under purchase, ending up with a skimpy, unsatisfying basket.
Setting a budget will help you know just how much you can and should buy. 2. Make a list - Once you’ve decided on a theme, write a list of items that fit that theme. Keep in mind list items should easily fit in a basket or other container. Organize your list with one or two centerpiece, must-have items at the top and would-like-to-have items in descending order of desirability. 3. Choose a unique container - Yes, it’s called a gift basket, but you don’t have to stick with a traditional wicker basket. Choose a container that really fits your theme. For example, a decorative plastic flower pot is a great container for a gardening lover’s basket. Your sports enthusiast might appreciate a cooler stocked with teamthemed items. 4. Stock your basket - Now that you have the container, you know how much you need to buy to fill it. Grab your list and head to the store! -(BPT)

Segerstrom Center for the Arts Presents Liza Minnelli and Michael Feinstein In Conversation and Performance Beloved American entertainment icons Liza Minnelli and Michael Feinstein appear together at Segerstrom Center for the Arts for the first time, in conversation and performance, on June 30, 2018 in Segerstrom Hall. A star-powered event, this will be a rare opportunity to get to know the personalities of two of the entertainment world’s most talented and celebrated artists. Single tickets start at $79 and are now available online at www.SCFTA. org, at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 556-2787. For inquiries about group ticket savings for 10 or more, call the Group Services office at (714) 755-0236. Liza Minnelli Liza Minnelli, winner of four Tony Awards, an Oscar, a special “Legends” Grammy, two Golden Globe Awards and an Emmy, is one of the entertainment world’s consummate performers. In film, on stage and in television, Liza has won critical acclaim, a multitude of fans, and recognition from her peers in show business, giving new dimension and credibility to the word “superstar.” One of America’s true legends, Liza began her professional career at an early age, 16, in 1963, in an OffBroadway revival of the musical Best Foot Forward, for which she received her first award, the Theatre World Award. It would be the first among many show business honors. In 1972 her movie career peaked when she played Sally Bowles in Cabaret. The film won eight Oscars, including Best Actress for Liza. The role also earned her a Golden Globe and a British Film Academy Award. The unqualified success of Cabaret put Liza on the covers of both Time and Newsweek in the same week. Liza starred in the first concert ever filmed live for television in 1972. The seminal Liza with a Z produced a Top 20 album and won the Emmy for Outstanding Single Program and the prestigious Peabody Award. It has been released in recent years on DVD. In between her many TV and film roles, Liza has never stopped touring and has long been considered one of the most exciting concert performers, electrifying audiences around the world and setting records at the most prestigious venues, from the Palladium in London and Opera House in Sydney, to the Olympia Theatre in Paris and New York’s historic Carnegie Hall, where one of Liza’s greatest triumphs was her unprecedented three-week concert engagement in 1987. Liza was the first entertainer in the hall’s history to completely sell-out three weeks of appearances. She had earlier appeared in concert at Carnegie Hall in 1979. This appearance was every bit as unforgettable. On closing night the police had to disperse the crowd when they refused to leave the
Liza Minnelli and Michael Feinstein. auditorium following multiple encores. Both concerts were recorded and are among the music industry’s most highly praised live concert recordings. One of the greatest and most acclaimed show business triumphs of all time was Liza’s record-setting inconcert engagement at Manhattan’s famed Radio City Music Hall in 1991, where Liza played to packed houses for three weeks, followed by a return engagement. The show was called, “Stepping Out,” after Liza’s film of the same name. Today, when her busy schedule allows, she works with students at The Actor’s Studio teaching master classes in acting and singing. Her well-known generosity of spirit, enthusiasm and commitment to her craft are unequaled in the entertainment industry. Michael Feinstein Michael Feinstein has built a dazzling career over the last three decades, bringing the music of the Great American songbook to the world. From recordings that have earned him five Grammy Award nominations to his Emmy-nominated PBS-TV specials, his acclaimed NPR series and concerts spanning the globe, plus appearances at such iconic venues as The White House, Buckingham Palace, Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall and Sydney Opera House, his work as an educator and archivist define Feinstein as one of the most important musical forces of our time. Feinstein’s passion for music and the Great American songbook (he founded the Great American
Songbook Foundation, dedicated to celebrating the art form and preserving it through educational programs, master classes and the annual High School Songbook Academy) has taken him along many artistic paths that have brought him great critical acclaim. His Sinatra Project earned his fifth Grammy Award nomination and led to The Sinatra Project, Volume II: The Good Life. His Emmy Award-nominated TV special Michael Feinstein – The Sinatra Legacy was taped live at the Palladium in Carmel, IN and aired across the country in 2011. The PBS series Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook received the ASCAP Deems-Taylor Television Broadcast Award. He released the CDs The Power Of Two – collaborating with Glee and 30 Rock star Cheyenne Jackson – and Cheek To Cheek, recorded with Broadway legend Barbara Cook. For his CD We Dreamed These Days, he co-wrote the title song with Dr. Maya Angelou. For his nationally syndicated public radio program, Song Travels, Michael interviews and performs alongside such music luminaries as Bette Midler, Neil Sedaka, Liza Minnelli, Rickie Lee Jones, David Hyde Pierce and others. Feinstein is Principal Pops Conductor for the Pasadena Symphony. Under his leadership, the Pasadena Pops has quickly become a premier orchestral presenter of the Great American Songbook, with definitive performances of rare orchestrations and classic arrangements. He launched an additional Pops series at the Kravis
Center for the Performing Arts in Palm Beach, Florida. Feinstein’s at the Nikko, Michael’s nightclub at San Francisco’s Nikko Hotel, has presented the top talents of pop and jazz since 2013. He debuted at Feinstein’s/54 Below, his new club in New York, late in 2015. His first venue in New York, Feinstein’s at the Regency, featured major entertainers such as Rosemary Clooney, Glen Campbell, Barbara Cook, Diahann Carroll, Jane Krakowski, Lea Michele, Cyndi Lauper, Jason Mraz and Alan Cumming from 1999 to 2012. In 2013, Michael released Change Of Heart: The Songs of Andre Previn, in collaboration with the four-time Oscar and 11-time Grammy Awardwinning composer-conductor-pianist. The album celebrates Previn’s pop songs and motion picture classics. Earlier album highlights include Hopeless Romantics, a songbook of classics by Michael’s late friend Harry Warren, recording with legendary jazz pianist George Shearing. His album with songwriting icon Jimmy Webb, Only One Life – The Songs of Jimmy Webb, was named one of the 10 Best CDs of the Year by USA Today. Through his life performances, recordings, film and television appearances and his songwriting (in collaboration with Alan and Marilyn Berman, Lindy Robbins, Bob Merrill and Marshall Barer), Feinstein is an all-star force in American music. 600 Town Center Drive Costa Mesa, CA 92626 T (714) 556-2121 SCFTA.org

A
nutritious diet is crucial for overall health and well-being. While it’s OK to indulge from time to time, it’s important to make sure you’re providing your body with appropriate nourishment. There are many ways to help you add more of the essential nutrients you need into everyday meals, including these nutritious ideas from CocoaVia.
Sneak in More Fruits and Vegetables.
You can bulk up the nutritional value of nearly any meal by incorporating fruits or vegetables directly into your recipes. Pureeing veggies is a good way to disguise textures or flavors you might typically avoid. For example, celery is a natural flavor enhancer for many types of broth soup. Adding finely pureed celery to the stock will add the flavor without the crunchy bits. You can also slip vegetables like spinach or carrots into smoothies, and depending on the base and fruit, you may never even taste them. Fresh, canned or frozen, fruit can give a boost of nutrition to dishes like oatmeal or pudding. You can also use purees (think applesauce) as a low-fat substitute for eggs and oil in baked goods like cake.
Go Frozen.
Fresh fruits and vegetables provide a wealth of essential vitamins and nutrients, but you may be surprised that their frozen counterparts do the same. Frozen foods are often perceived as less nutritious, but they can contain just as many nutrients as fresh produce. In fact, since freezing often involves picking the food at its peak and then quickly freezing it, freezing can actually help retain vitamins more efficiently than refrigeration or canning; frozen vegetables can actually hold on to nutrients longer than fresh produce and are a great alternative when seasonal fruits and vegetables are unavailable. In many cases, frozen veggies also make it easy to experiment with better-for-you meals because the cleaning and prep work is already done. You can try adding them to soups, stir-fries, casseroles and even pasta dishes.
Cook Quickly.
If you’ve historically shied away from cooked vegetables, you may find that proper preparation is the secret ingredient. Not only does overcooking veggies deplete their flavor, in
most cases it also diminishes their nutritional value. Cook veggies lightly and quickly using methods like stir-frying or steaming to help retain water-soluble nutrients like vitamins B and C.
Get Saucy.
You may think of dishes covered in rich gravy or sauce as unhealthy, and in some cases, you would be right. However, it’s actually quite possible to create saucy dishes that taste terrific. Both tomato sauce and pesto add nutrients and can top pretty much anything, from pastas to grilled chicken. Tomato sauce contains lycopene, a bright plant pigment known as a carotenoid that has been linked to a range of health benefits. Pesto is traditionally made with healthy pine nuts and basil, but you can also get creative and prepare this light sauce alternative with options such as arugula, spinach and heart-healthy walnuts or pecans.
Consider Cocoa Flavanols.
Another option to consider adding to your diet is cocoa flavanols. These plant-based phytonutrients are found naturally in cocoa, and research supports that these flavanols work within your body to help maintain healthy blood flow. While chocolate, including dark chocolate and natural (nonalkalized) cocoa powder, can be sources of cocoa flavanols, they are often not a reliable source of cocoa flavanols. The way cocoa is handled matters in the retention of these phytonutrients. However, one easy way to add cocoa flavanols to your routine is by incorporating a daily cocoa extract supplement, such as CocoaVia, which contains the highest concentration available in a cocoa extract supplement today. The supplement can be added to the food or beverage of your choice, like a Chocolate-Chai Smoothie or coffee. Visit CocoaVia.com for more information about cocoa flavanols and ideas for adding them to your diet.
Chocolate-Chai Smoothie
Makes: 1 smoothie 1/2 cup boiling water 1 chai-flavored tea bag 1/2 cup fat-free milk 1 tablespoon honey ice cubes 1 packet CocoaVia Unsweetened Dark Chocolate (or Sweetened Dark Chocolate) supplement In measuring cup with pour spout, pour boiling water over tea bag. Let steep 5 minutes; remove tea bag. Pour milk and tea into blender; add honey, a handful of ice and cocoa extract supplement. Cover and blend until smooth. Nutritional information per serving: 130 calories; 1 g total fat; 50 mg sodium; 27 g carbohydrates; 1 g dietary fiber; 24 g sugar; 5 g protein; 375 mg cocoa flavanols.
While there are many misconceptions about chocolate, especially when it comes to its health benefits, these facts from the experts at CocoaVia set the record straight on some of the most common chocolate myths.
1. Chocolate contains powerful antioxidants.
3. Chocolate containing 70 percent cacao or greater is good for you.
Chocolate, particularly dark chocolate, does contain cocoa flavanols, phytonutrients which numerous scientific studies have demonstrated have a positive impact on health. However, cocoa flavanols are not antioxidants. While not antioxidants, cocoa flavanols have been shown to have positive effects on health that are linked to their ability to support the health and function of your blood vessels.
The percentage of cacao is not a reliable indicator of a product’s cocoa flavanol content. Unfortunately, there is also no way of knowing exactly how many cocoa flavanols are in a conventional chocolate product because traditional cocoa processing, which includes fermenting, drying and roasting of beans, destroys many of the flavanols naturally present in the cocoa bean.
2. Chocolate is good for your heart.
Chocolate does contain caffeine, but an average 1-ounce serving of dark chocolate contains less than half the amount of caffeine found in an average cup of black tea. The amount of caffeine in chocolate is in proportion to the percentage of cacao in the product, meaning milk chocolate contains less caffeine than semi-sweet or dark chocolate.
Chocolate can be part of a healthy diet, but it is not a health food. Even if chocolate is high in cocoa flavanols, the calories, fat and sugar leave it best-suited as an occasional indulgence.

Five sure-fire steps for planning the most memorable family vacation of your life
It’s no secret that families are busy these days. Between mom and dad’s careers, the kids’ school demands and extra-curricular activities, quality time together as a family is hard to come by. This busy lifestyle is inspiring a new travel movement, and 2015 is positioned for the grand rebirth of the family vacation. If you want to take an unforgettable family vacation this year, the idea of planning might seem overwhelming. But travel experts agree that planning ahead and researching your options
are important steps to ensure your trip is stress-free and full of fun. Follow these five steps to plan a trip your entire family will love and remember for years to come: Step 1: Make a travel wish list Kick off your travel planning by talking to all family members about what they’d like to see and do on vacation. Keep it light-hearted and have some fun - chat with your 4-year-old over breakfast or text your teen after school. As you have these conversations, notice commonalities, such as location and experiences. Step 2: Research, research, research After your initial conversations with your family, it’s time to do your research. The Internet has made selecting a travel destination that much easier - or harder because there are so many options. Check out tourism organizations, such as a Chamber of Commerce or Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (CVB). Look up online hotel and travel reviews these sites can provide invaluable information for travelers. Many sites even have free online travel planners
or visitor’s guides. Step 3: Choose a destination for everyone Perhaps the most important consideration when planning a family vacation is to select a destination that has something for every person in your group. Myrtle Beach, S.C. is a great example of a location that is great for all ages. The 60 miles of pristine beaches are just one reason to visit - foodies can indulge on the best Southern and low-country cuisine; cultural enthusiasts can experience beautiful art museums and plantations; golfers tee off at a one of the many championship courses in the area. From water parks to natural wonders, Myrtle Beach is a true gem for family vacations. Visit www.visitmyrtlebeach.com to learn more. Step 4: Select your ideal accommodations Whether you’re vacationing for a long weekend or multiple weeks, it’s important to choose the right accommodations for your family. For example, if you know you’ll be at the beach daily, stay at a shore-
side resort. If you want to save on eating expenses, look into condos with kitchens. For big groups such as family reunions, consider a beach house that allows everyone to stay in their own room within one shared space. Step 5: Create a fun-filled itinerary This is a vacation, and while you shouldn’t plan out every hour of every day, having a basic itinerary gives direction to your trip and will help your group build excitement prior to your departure. Plus, planning ahead allows you to seek out deep discounts on tickets to shows and theme parks like the Alabama Theatre or Wild Water & Wheels in Myrtle Beach. You can even explore free activities like festivals and celebrations in the area that would be worthwhile to attend. If you feel like it’s time for your family to take a break from the stress of everyday life, a family vacation might be just what everyone needs. Follow these steps to select a family friendly destination such as Myrtle Beach to ensure a vacation full of unforgettable memories.
Prepping for a party: make-ahead appetizers make summer entertaining easy Don’t let the first “ding-dong” of the doorbell catch you up to your elbows in dirty dishes and half-finished appetizers. For your next party, prepare your appetizers ahead of time with these simple tips and recipes: “Let’s not reinvent the wheel. Take items you already know how to make and turn them cool and trendy with some add-ons,” says Chef Richard Worthen, culinary instructor at The Art Institute of Seattle. You can dress up egg, tuna or chicken salad with a variety of flavors and spices. He recommends chopped cilantro instead of chopped parsley, adding chipotle to egg salad or adding almonds, walnuts or pistachio nuts for some crunch. For a gluten-free appetizer, try lettuce cups. “You could do a quick chop of a variety of three-to-four items and put it in a lettuce cup,” says Chef Brian Shulse of The Art Institute of California - San Francisco, a campus of Argosy University. “It can also go traditional Asian - ground pork with some spices that can just be popped in the microwave to heat before serving.” “You could do a flat bread with seasonal vegetables on it,” Shulse says. “Make the bread in advance, roll it out, put olive oil on it, add seasonal vegetables, and bake.” Worthen recommends tomato toast, which is made by taking cut tomatoes and rubbing the juice and pulp into french
bread slices. This can serve as a base for any type of spread. Shulse says people tend to go to proteins, such as shrimp cocktail and cubes of steak, and not to the veggie tray. He says you can make all kinds of skewers with different meats, then add fresh chopped herbs and citrus to Greek yogurt for a quick and easy sauce. Another great make-ahead protein is tuna tartar, which can be made with a high-quality ahi tuna steak and served with store-bought kettle chips. Phyllo-wrapped asparagus, made with store-bought phyllo dough, is another easy recipe, along with water chestnuts wrapped in bacon. Simply wrap one third of a slice of bacon around each water chestnut, roll in brown sugar and bake at 425 degrees until brown and crisp. Try these easy make-ahead recipes courtesy of Shulse: Spicy Ahi Tartare Yield: 10 servings Ingredients: 2 pounds Yellow fin/Ahi tuna, diced in 1/8-inch pieces 1/2 cup cucumber, washed, dried, diced in 1/8-inch pieces(optionalpeel) 1-2 garlic cloves, crushed, peel removed and minced 1-2 serrano or jalapeno pepper, seeded, minced fine 1 shallot, finely minced (substitute 2 green onions) 1 orange, washed, dried, zested,
juiced 1 lime, juiced 1 teaspoon dry oregano (or 2 teaspoons fresh) 2 teaspoon ground cumin 2 teaspoon kosher salt (or more to taste) 1 teaspoon sugar 1 bag thick potato chips (like Kettle chips) or crackers Directions: Gently mix all the ingredients together and refrigerate, covered, until ready to use. This will hold for two to four hours (or up to overnight). To serve, gently mix and place in a serving bowl with a spoon, with the chips on the side. Lettuce Cups Yield: 15 bites Ingredients: 2 tablespoons sesame oil 1/2 yellow onion, small dice 1 tablespoon garlic, smashed, peeled, minced 1 tablespoon ginger, peeled, grated fine (or use micro plane) 1/2 bunch green onions, minced, white and green kept separately 1 pound ground pork or turkey 1 teaspoon Kosher salt 1/2 cup water chestnuts, small dice 2 tablespoon soy sauce 2 tablespoon Hoisin sauce 1-2 tablespoons Chinese hot mustard 1/2 cup peanuts, crushed or chopped 15 Iceberg lettuce cups, cut into
3-inch squares Directions: Over medium-low heat, preheat a medium size saute pan for 30 seconds. Add the sesame oil and swirl the pan until it is fully coated with oil. Add the onion, garlic, white part of the green onion and ginger. Sweat for several minutes until the mixture begins to look translucent. Turn up the heat to high and add the ground pork. Cook on high, stirring until the meat turns pale brown. Turn the heat back down to medium-low and add the salt, diced water chestnuts, soy sauce and Hoisin sauce. Cook until moisture evaporates. Turn the pan off and add the Chinese hot mustard to taste. After this has cooled down, cover and refrigerate. Can be made up to four days in advance. Reheat gently in a microwave or saute pan until just warmed through. Place in a serving bowl, top with peanuts, and serve with lettuce cups.

Be prepared: Red Cross urges blood and platelet donation Because emergency situations are unpredictable, the American Red Cross needs regular donations to help ensure that blood products are available for patients at a moment’s notice. You can help ensure a sufficient supply for accident victims and others with serious medical conditions. This May, the American Red Cross is calling for donors to give blood and platelets regularly to be prepared to meet the needs of patients in emergency situations. According to the National Trauma Institute, trauma accounts for approximately 41 million emergency department visits and 2 million hospital admissions each year. In March 2015, Kevin Frame suffered life-threatening injuries in a head-on collision during spring break. He received blood products to treat internal injuries immediately after the accident and during multiple surgeries while recovering. “Without the blood and plasma products made available from donations, I would not be alive today to continue my rehabilitation journey,” said Frame, who had to relearn to swallow, speak and walk after the accident. Regular blood, platelet and plasma donations help ensure that blood is available at a moment’s notice. In fact, it is the blood on the shelves that is used to help save lives at the time of an accident or sudden illness. In trauma situations, when there’s no time to check a patient’s blood type, emergency personnel reach for type O negative red blood cells and type AB plasma because they can be transfused to any patient, regardless of blood type. Less than 7 percent of the population has type O negative blood, and only about 4 percent of the population has type AB blood. Platelets may also be needed to help with clotting in cases of massive bleeding. Because platelets must be transfused within five days of donation, there is a constant – often critical – need to keep up with hospital demand. Donors of all blood types are urged to roll up a sleeve this May to help meet the needs of trauma patients and others with serious medical conditions. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). How to donate blood Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to Page 30
make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at checkin. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their predonation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/ RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App. Volunteers needed Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross is to become a volunteer transportation specialist and deliver lifesaving blood products to local area hospitals. Volunteer transportation specialists play a very important role in ensuring an ample blood supply for patients in need by transporting blood and blood products. For more information and to apply for a volunteer transportation specialist position, visit rdcrss.org/driver. About the American Red Cross The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
