Coto residents and Philanthropists THOMAS & ELIZABETH TIERNEY TO CHAIR GOODWILL OF ORANGE COUNTY’S 4TH ANNUAL GALA Goodwill of Orange County announced today the honorary chairs for its 4th annual Goodwill Gala: prominent local philanthropists Thomas T. and Elizabeth C. Tierney. We are honored and quite humbled that Southern California’s most generous philanthropists are now leading the effort to support the critical programs Goodwill of Orange County delivers through our gala. Their leadership will take this event to the place it deserves to be: among the most prominent in Orange County,” said Frank Talarico, Jr., President and CEO, Goodwill of Orange County. “We are proud of the $1 million we have raised in the past three years at this annual event, but with Tom and Elizabeth’s leadership, we will undoubtedly soon be positioned to serve even more people with barriers, such as veterans and people with disabilities.” In 2015, the Tierneys gave a transformational $1 million gift to Goodwill to create its Tierney Center for Veteran Services, a comprehensive support resource for veterans and their families providing services such as job placement, housing assistance, financial education and more. The gift remains the organization’s largest single program-specific donation in its 92-year history.

The Tierneys have an incredible history of philanthropy and a passion for helping people heal, endowing numerous scholarships in the arts, sciences, and humanities as well as funding the first University of California Academic Peace Studies Chair at UCI. Earlier this year, the Tierneys were recognized as the National Philanthropy Day Legacy Award honorees as a testament to their significant philanthropic history in Orange County. “Elizabeth and I are passionate advocates for assisting people in their own healing process and Goodwill of Orange County does just that for veterans, people with disabilities, and those looking for a pathway to independence,” said Tom Tierney. “It is our honor to be honorary chairs of the annual Gala and share the profound strides this organization is making for our community.” The 4th Goodwill Gala will be held on October 27, 2017 at Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point. Musical entertainment to be announced closer to the date. For more information, to purchase tickets and learn more about sponsorship opportunities, contact Amy Holtz at Goodwill at (714) 4803355 or email amyh@ocgoodwill.org.

The OC Fair open now until August 13 Here are some highlights: New OC Fair rides The OC Fair is adding three new rides this year and one new funhouse, making the carnival bigger and more exciting than ever before! The new La Grande Wheel XL is so big that it was transported on 22 semi-trailer trucks to get to the Fairgrounds. It is 130 feet tall, weighs 616,000 pounds and features a half-million LED lights. The 36 cabins are climate-controlled and hold six to eight people. It takes the Ferris wheel about three and a half minutes to make a full circle and can carry about 2,000 passengers an hour. La Grande Wheel XL cost $6 million to build and is one of the largest traveling observation wheels in the western hemisphere. This giant new Ferris wheel was manufactured in Europe and is known as the Mercedes Benz of carnival wheels. But two is better than one! For the first time ever, OC Fair will feature two giant Ferris wheels to whisk riders high into the sky for a panoramic view. La Grande Wheel XL will be joined by the Big Wheel. Standing more than 108 feet tall, the Big Wheel features the newest technology for a smooth ride. It’s equipped with LED lights and 24 open-air gondolas. Also making its debut at the OC Fair is Endeavor – an open-air ride in which passengers are suspended in their seats and experience 3G acceleration. Riders will feel the sensation of flying 60 feet through the air at 25 miles per hour. A new funhouse, Rockin’ Rodeo, will be coming, too, with zany twists and turns around every corner. These are all from Ray Cammack Shows, and join returning favorites such as Big Top Swinger, Cliff

Although the cookies will be baked a head of time, it will be up to the kids to create their designs using the variety of colors of royal icing, edible pearls and more. “They won’t have to follow a recipe or anything, they will have total freedom to be creative,” Tréand said. “The creative freedom allows kids to create something they can feel proud of, so I think it will be really great for them.” Originally from Paris, Tréand got his start as an apprentice at a local pastry shop in Northern France, all while taking pastry courses one week per month in Vincennes, Paris. Tréand opened his first patisserie tearoom, Pâtisserie Tréand, in Brignoles in Provence in 1989. A few years later, he decided to share his passion of pastries with others and became a teacher at the CFA of St. Maximin. Tréand’s knack for sweets isn’t the only special thing about him. In 2004, he won the coveted Meilleur Ouvrier de France (M.O.F.), which is the most prestigious award given by the President of France to a professional

Pastry Chef and Master Chocolatier Stephané Tréand in a certain trade. Tréand led a stage demo at the 2016 OC Fair and was a huge success. This year he’ll have his own booth in OC Promenade. “People are very curious about the art of patisseries here,” Tréand said. “I’m looking forward to educating people and making people aware of working from scratch, artistry and French pastries.”

the history of the orange county fair

Shortly after Orange County was created in 1889, the Orange County Community Fair Corporation was formed. This group put on a small fair in 1890 that included a horse race and a few exhibits in Santa Ana. In 1894, another group, the Orange County Fair Association, Inc., took over The first Orange County Fairs were primarily livestock exhibitions and horse races. At the turn of the century, a “carnival of products” was added and the Fair became an annual event. In ensuing years, the Fair was held in Santa Ana, but after World War I it was moved to Huntington Beach for two years and then back to temporary grounds on East Fruit Street in Santa Ana. In 1916, the Fair was taken over by the newly organized Orange County Farm Bureau. The first OC

Fair Board was elected in 1925 and the Fair relocated to Anaheim, across the street from the Orange County Hospital. In 1925, a rodeo and carnival were added to the Fair. OC Fair Clowns After World War II, the state formed the 32nd District Agricultural Association and made

it responsible for the Fair. The state then purchased land occupied by the Santa Ana Army Air Base and some of it was earmarked for a new fairground. The Fair was first held at the new site in 1949 and it soon was designated as the permanent Fairgrounds. In 1953, the City of Costa

Mesa was incorporated - the new city included the Fair’s location. From 1949 to the present, the OC Fair has grown from a small, community, fiveday celebration to a 23-day festival that is one of Orange County’s most eagerly awaited annual events.

Segerstrom Center Arts and Business Leaders raised $300,000 this year hotos by Doug Gifford P Segerstrom Center for the Arts honored Charles Zhang and Jesse Bagley during its annual Arts and Business Leadership Awards Dinner with an attendance of 300 supporters, business executives, and VIP’s. The Arts and Business Leadership Awards Dinner included a networking cocktail party, dinner and awards presentation in Samueli Theater, followed by a performance of The Bodyguard in Segerstrom Hall. The evening continued with a post-performance party at Water Grill, where guests and the show’s cast mingled, dined and danced to the music of Reflexx courtesy of Yamaha. The Distinguished Leader Award pays tribute to an established corporate leader and the Rising Leader Award to a young corporate star, both of whom have demonstrated exemplary business leadership and consistent, generous support to Orange County’s arts organizations. Zhang received the Center’s Distinguished Leader Award and Bagley the Rising Leader Award. The Arts and Business Leadership Awards Dinner also serves as a fundraiser to support Center community engagement and education programs and raised $300,000 this year. During his comments, Bagley said, “Segerstrom Center for the Arts plays an integral part in facilitating the dreams of many, especially the children right here in Orange County who are underserved and underprivileged. In giving back, we do make a huge difference. Very often, we may never even meet or know the children and families we have helped. Personally, I find there is something very profound and gratifying about that.” A highlight of the evening occurred when Charles Zhang concluded his remarks, relating the story of his arrival in the United States virtually penniless, and seeing and taking opportunities presented to him: “Tonight,” said Zhang, “I’d like to thank all friends and the new friends. Let’s run the race together!” During a standing ovation, he led everyone in the song made famous by Josh Groban, “You Raise Me Up”. Proceeds from the Arts and Business Leadership Awards Dinner help make many programs possible and accessible to children throughout Orange County. These include community engagement programs developed through the Center for Dance and Innovation (CDI) and Center Without Boundaries, which connect the Center with the many diverse communities in Orange County. The CDI supports flagship artistic programming and a wide range of projects that celebrate innovation, nurture creativity and engage audiences of the future. It is home to the ABT Gillespie School and the School of Dance and Music for Children with Disabilities. The Center Without Boundaries develops partnerships with non-cultural organizations to help them in their own efforts to respond to the ever-changing needs of the community. Pau Maui Vodka sponsored the pre-event reception. Kia Motors America and Zion Enterprises were Platinum Sponsors. Kia is the official automotive partner of the Center, and was on hand with the West Coast debut of its new Stinger as well as a photo booth for souvenirs and gifts for each guest. The evening also included a live auction for two Broadway show packages provided by the Center, each raising $7,000. Segerstrom Center is a leader among the nation’s performing arts centers for providing education programs designed to inspire young people through the arts. The Center’s programs reach hundreds of thousands of students each year in five Southern California counties. Community engagement programs developed through the Center for Dance and Innovation and Center Without Boundaries also connect the Center more comprehensively with Orange County’s many diverse communities. The CDI supports flagship artistic programming and a wide range of projects that celebrate innovation, nurture creativity and engage audiences of the future. It is home to the ABT Gillespie School and the School of Dance and Music for Children with Disabilities. The Center Without Boundaries develops partnerships with non-cultural organizations to help them in their own efforts to respond the ever-changing needs of the community.

It was named to all of the major top 10 lists including The New York Times, Associated Press, New Yorker, Entertainment Weekly, BuzzFeed, The Daily Beast, Chicago Tribune, The Hollywood Reporter and more. Based on Alison Bechdel’s bestselling graphic memoir, Fun Home introduces us to Alison at three different ages as she explores and unravels the many mysteries of her childhood that connect with her in surprising new ways. A finalist for

the Pulitzer Prize, Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes. Fun Home features music by Jeanine Tesori, book and lyrics by Lisa Kron and direction by Sam Gold, whose work on this production earned them Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book and Best Direction. With this win, Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori also made history by becoming the first female writing team to be awarded the Best Score Tony Award. OC Wine Society hosts its annual wine competitions, judging more than 3,000 bottles Let’s go behind the scenes at one of the country’s most exclusive winetasting competitions, hosted by OC Wine Society, where professional judges swirl, sip and savor entries from California wineries to determine who will win the gold at the 2017 OC Fair. The judging process is a sight to behold. The organized chaos works in a constantly flowing circle: stewards pour bottles of wine into glasses, labeling each with numbers for identification, and then serve the judges. After that round of tasting, the stewards maneuver the trays of glasses around to the washers and the dryers while the results are delivered to a group of volunteers who enter the handwritten scores into a computer. Wine is then poured again and around it goes. It’s known as a double-blind tasting. The judges know what the varietal is, but not who made the wine, its price, sugar level or any other information - and stewards are in the dark, too. The OC Wine Society enlisted more than 70 judges who put their expertise to work over a weekend this month tasting some 2,500 bottles of wine for the annual commercial wine competition. Lucky Fairgoers will be able to taste the winning entries in The Courtyard during the Fair that runs July 14 through Aug. 13. (See complete list of 4-star, gold, silver and bronze medalists.) “This is the one of the most prestigious competitions in the country because we do only California wines,” said Fran Gitsham, treasurer of OCWS and one of the competition coordinators. “And we’re known to have the highest caliber of judging because we only allow actual winemakers and winery owners and some wine

Page 24

consultants. It’s the elite of the elite.” Dennis Esslinger, Director of Judges, pairs up the judges to taste the types of wine they’re best known for, so they are well-versed in what they’re critiquing, Gitsham said. If you’re picturing a bunch of wine snobs trying to oneup each other, you’re wrong. “You can tell it’s a very congenial event, which I think leads to more thoughtfulness, and there’s no posturing or posing,” said David Stevens, a consultant for Davon International. “You have a chance to evaluate wines exactly the way they are – there are no politics involved.” Stephens has been judging for OCWS for 17 years. Many of the judges have been returning year after year to be a part of the competition. “I always look forward to coming to this event,” said Norman Yost of Flying Goat Cellars. “For me, it’s a great opportunity to fine-tune my palette, and also to taste wine with my peers, which we only do once a year.” Yost was in a judging panel with Stephens, along with Paul Ahvenainen of Korbel Champagne Cellars and Chris Ehrenberg of Ehrenberg Cellars. In between friendly banter and jokes, Stephens pointed out that the four men have about 100 combined years of experience. Yost has judged for 11 years, and says one of the reasons he returns is because the event is different than others. “I think that’s the greatest attraction is they make you feel part of a special clique, and not many events allow that to happen,” Yost said. “Plus you get to taste great wines.” OCWS actually hosts two major annual wine competitions at the OC

The Coto de Caza News

Director of Judges Dennis Esslinger Fair. The week after the professional judging, about 100 judges evaluated some 600 home wine entries. While both competitions are run in essentially the same fashion - and with all volunteers - the judging itself is actually quite different. Most notably, the commercial wines are judged by professionals in the wine business while the home wines are judged by trained volunteers. Kevin Donnelly, competition chairman, says all scoring is based on a modified UC Davis 20-point scale. OCWS hosts judging workshops to help the judges stay consistent. Another big difference in the competitions is the Best of the Best award in the home wine competition. This is determined through a consensus by the judging panel. Each judge gives an award based on their individual recommendation, and then the panel of four judges gives a consensus award. If all the judges give a gold in the individual scoring, the wine is labeled a double gold, and these top winners are on display in The Courtyard during the Fair. Orange County is represented well in the double gold winners, with home

winemakers from Orange, Dana Point, Mission Viejo, North Tustin, Yorba Linda, Lake Forest, Irvine, Santa Ana and Costa Mesa. (See a complete list of home wine competition winners.) Esslinger and his wife, Carol, have spent a lot of time reorganizing the competitions, making them what they are today. “Everything was manual, not state of the art,” Esslinger said. “When we got involved we started applying engineering principles, using computers to get things organized and automated, and put together a whole sequence of events. There’s tons of reports that get generated to verify bottles and boxes, and a lot of the cross checking from start to finish - most of that didn’t exist when we got started.” Now, OC Wine Society, with over 1,000 members and 350 active volunteers, hosts competitions that flow like wine. “This organization transcends every gender, every sexual orientation, every culture, every religion, every race,” Gitsham said. “This is the way the world should be.” Photo courtesy of OC Fair & Event Center

A Salute to the Arts Date: Sunday, July 30 Time: 2 – 4pm Cost: Free with Festival admission The Festival introduces a new event, sponsored by PBS SoCal inspired by the original Festival of Arts, which included a variety of artistic endeavors including theater, literature, dance and more. On July 30, “A Salute to the Arts” features a performance by Shakespeare’s Fool. There are songs in the plays of Shakespeare. Who knew? The playwright often wrote “song” in the text, above the lyric so there’s no confusion. The trouble is, even accounting for the genius of WS – like most songs, they don’t really grab you till you hear them performed by a singer. That’s to say: reading the lyric on the page is only half the story. In the spring of 2010, Jason Feddy and his band met with local performance poet, actor and teacher John Gardiner to develop a performance piece of Shakespeare’s songs with modern, acoustic based tunes combined with speeches from Shakespeare’s plays. The result is a fast-paced, off the cuff and energetic performance called Shakespeare’s Fool, featuring 10 songs and 10

speeches from the Shakespeare canon. The good-natured tension between the band and actors is unscripted and funny and the songs rock. PACIFIC SYMPHONY RENEWS CONTRACT WITH POPULAR ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR ROGER KALIA FOR TWO MORE YEARS Pacific Symphony has extended the contract of its assistant conductor, Roger Kalia, for two additional years, providing for him to continue in his current role through June 2019. It’s been two years since the Symphony first announced Kalia as its second in command (under Music Director Carl St.Clair), with his position beginning at the start of the 2015-16 season. In addition to assisting St.Clair with conducting duties, Kalia has played— and will continue to play—a vital role in the Symphony’s education initiatives. These include programming and conducting the Farmers & Merchants Bank Family Musical Mornings series, which introduces children ages 5-11 (and beyond) to the exciting world of orchestral music through engaging and educational concerts. “I am absolutely thrilled to continue my work as assistant conductor with Pacific Symphony for the next two years,” says Kalia. “Working with Maestro St.Clair, the staff and the wonderful musicians has been inspiring and memorable. I have already had the privilege of meeting and working with incredible people across Orange County, and I’m looking forward to being part of the many exciting future concerts and projects. Just having this opportunity is extraordinary—and a big deal! I am so grateful for being part of this very special organization.” “Roger has made a tremendous musical contribution to Pacific Symphony,” says Maestro St.Clair. “In very short order, he gained the respect of the musicians and also the staff with whom he works so very closely. Offering Roger a two-year extension will give all of us some important stability for the near future. He is most deserving!” Kalia will also continue in his role as music director of Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra (PSYO), a premier training orchestra for instrumentalists in grades 9-12, preparing them for a three-concert series each season. Among his many accomplishments with the Symphony thus far, Kalia led the youth orchestra on its highly successful 10-day international tour to China in June 2016. Kalia remarks: “I will never forget the Youth Orchestra’s China tour last summer, which marked the orchestra’s second international tour and first to Asia. I am beyond thrilled to continue my work with the wonderful young musicians of PSYO, as we reach for new heights as an Page 26

orchestra over these next two years.” “Roger is doing a wonderful job with our PSYO,” says St.Clair. “He keenly understands his role in helping these young and very talented musicians mature and develop. He shares his love and passion for music with them, inspiring and motivating them beyond their years.” Additionally, Kalia’s duties will include welcoming more than 12,000 elementary school children to the concert hall at the end of each of the next two school years for the Class Act Youth Concerts, which annually conclude a year of music lessons and performances in Orange County schools given by Symphony musicians. “One of the most enjoyable and important aspects of my job has been connecting with our younger audiences through the Family Musical Mornings and Class Act Youth concerts,” says Kalia. “Having the opportunity to expose and introduce them to Pacific Symphony and orchestral music has been extremely rewarding for me as a conductor. I always enjoy meeting these wonderful young people and their parents in the lobby and seeing the joy and excitement on their faces after our concerts.” With the end of the Symphony’s 2016-17 season concluding in June, Kalia can next be seen on the stage of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in October 2017, when he will lead the annual Halloween Family Musical Mornings concert. “As with all of our previous assistant conductors, I have been of the same thinking—one year at a time, but not more than four years in this post,” notes St.Clair. “Having been an assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony, my goal is to treat our assistant conductors as I was groomed and mentored. I try to make sure and create an environment in which they can continue to grow and develop as musicians, conductors and future music directors. Roger embraces all of his opportunities and makes the most out of them. Everyone is a winner!” Though only 30 years old when he first arrived in Orange County, Kalia brought with him a great deal of experience as a conductor and educator, having served as Charlotte Symphony’s assistant conductor since September 2013. The maestro led a variety of performances for the

Pacific Symphony assistant conductor, Roger Kalia Charlotte Symphony including the family, education, outreach and parks concerts, and he also collaborated frequently with the Charlotte Ballet. He’s been praised for conducting with “vigor” and “commitment” (Charlotte Observer) and for bringing a “fresh view to classical music” (The Republic). Kalia also completed three years as music director of the Young Musicians Foundation (YMF) Debut Orchestra in Los Angeles. Winner of YMF’s 2012 National Conductor Search, Kalia follows in the footsteps of such illustrious conductors as Michael Tilson Thomas, André Previn and Myung-Whun Chung. Kalia has proven to be a prolific leader in the music world through his appearances with orchestras across North America and Europe, as well as his innovative programming choices. Highlights from his time with YMF Debut Orchestra include a production of Stravinsky’s “The Soldier’s Tale” with actors Jack Black and Michael Lerner at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, a unique concert titled “Gamer Jams: Music Behind the Screen” featuring music by leading video game composers at the Ford Theater, and the orchestra’s debut

performance at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels “Virgin of Guadalupe” Celebration, which was televised and streamed worldwide. He has worked with many famous composers, commissioning and programming more than 100 works as an advocate for contemporary classical music. This fascination for the advancement of music in today’s world along with the reverence for the old masterpieces is expressed in Kalia’s co-founding and music directorship of the Lake George Music Festival in New York, which serves as a meeting point for composers and musicians from across the nation. Kalia’s many praiseworthy experiences are further bolstered by his acceptance of the BMI/Lionel Newman Conducting Scholarship and YMF Conducting Grant. He completed his work as a doctoral conducting fellow at Indiana University. “I am so grateful and honored to be part of an organization that puts so much priority on music education and I look forward to inspiring future generations of musicians and classical music listeners in the years to come,” concludes Kalia.

Notice To Potential Bidders: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. Notice To Property Owner: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (877) 440-4460 or visit this Internet Web site www.mkconsultantsinc.com, using the file number assigned to this case 170407092. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
