Thousands of Volunteers to Make Orange County Beaches Sparkle with World’s Largest Trash Cleanup On September 16, thousands of Orange County residents will head to sites across the county to play their part in the world’s largest trash cleanup for Coastal Cleanup Day. Registration is now open for all 51 cleanup sites in Orange County, organized by Orange County Coastkeeper and Trails4All. Orange County beaches and waterways collect trash that travels from inland communities via the county’s rivers and storm drains. Beach cleanups stand as a last line of defense to prevent this debris from polluting the ocean and its wildlife. Orange County’s cleanup sites are included as part of California Coastal Cleanup Day, which encourages volunteers to leave the Golden State’s beaches sparkling. This statewide event is part of the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, the largest volunteer event on the planet. Last year, more than 7,200 Orange County volunteers collected more than 56,600 pounds of trash and recyclable materials during the threehour event. Some of the most obscure findings included Keurig machines, soda cans from the 1980’s and a Bosu balance ball. “So many people don’t understand the impact of coastal pollution until they see it up close,” says Lauren

Smith, Orange County Coastkeeper’s volunteer coordinator. “At Coastal Cleanup Day, people learn that small actions like removing trash from the sand can have a huge ripple effect.” Coastkeeper, the Huntington and Bolsa Chica State Beach Interpretive Offices and local partners will be hosting a Trash Free OC Jamboree at three cleanup locations after the event. The events will feature educational games and activities, sponsor booths and prizes and a celebration to all of our dedicated volunteers. These events will occur at Huntington State Beach and the Back Bay Science Center. The third location will be announced soon on Coastkeeper’s website. Attendance is free and supplies will be provided. However, Coastkeeper aspires to accomplish a low-waste event and asks that volunteers bring their own cleanup supplies including a bucket or reusable bag, gloves and reusable water bottle. In addition to volunteering, residents and businesses can support Coastal Cleanup Day with donations and sponsorships. To register for Coastal Cleanup Day and find the site closest to you, visit www.coastkeeper.org/ccd. For more information, contact Lauren Smith at lauren@coastkeeper.org.

How about a festive neighborhood gathering? The Village is known as the friendliest community in all of Coto for good reason - we like getting to know our neighbors! Our Social Committee is recruiting members to help plan and stage a few annual events to be held on Village-owned property. The initial event we are discussing is a Village Faire (& Flea Market?) for early Fall. This firstever-of-its-type event will be held in the daytime only, on a Saturday and provides residents a chance to walk to the site since it’s only a block or two from their doors. We have a huge outdoor space at the intersection of Via Venado and Via Pajaro (see map, below) that has ample room for 6’ table “booths”, smaller carnival-type game booths, local performer platform, picnic area, etc. Many of our members have talents in jewelry-making, artworks, homemade and holiday crafts, growing potted plants, small collectibles to sell, etc. In past years, each street often participated by hosting their own game booth. Village moms might be interested in setting up a kids toys and clothes booth where they can buy/swap/ barter for gently used items that kids quickly outgrow. The area connects at the lowest section to the end of the Via Alondra cul-de-sac where food trucks will be stationed for purchasing bites. The planning is ongoing and we

encourage your suggestions. We need ideas, energy, extra hands, and enthusiasm! The initial Social Committee planning session for this event is scheduled for Saturday August 26, at 10:00AM on the site of the event. Come on down and get involved! It’s party planning time

and we need your help! Questions? Inquiries can be sent to the Village blog Administrator. cotoVillageOnline@gmail.com; ‎Please include your contact info, including a phone number and best time to reach you.

H o w w a r m i n g w e at h e r a f f e ct s h o r s e s Increasing heat and drier conditions mean outdoor animals of all kinds are forced to adapt as the summer season marches on. The sweltering temperatures in many parts of the country can have a multitude of effects on these animals that are in the sun and heat throughout the day. Horses are a primary example of outdoor animals that experience the effects of the temperatures and must adapt. However, there are ways that owners can help ease the strain of summer on their horses in a few different key areas. Nutrition Oftentimes, a horse’s diet will require adjustments during the hot temperatures of summer, especially during extreme heat. Perhaps the largest nutritional concern for horse owners is making sure to provide plenty of fresh water to ensure proper hydration. As temperatures climb, horses, like most animals, will naturally feel the need to consume higher volumes of water. However, it’s the owner’s responsibility to make sure the proper amount is available. Hoof Care Typically, as seasons change and the weather starts to get warmer, hooves will start to grow and develop at normal rates after the lull in growth throughout the cooler months. During this time, it is especially important that horses receive consistent trimming and maintenance from hoof care professionals. In addition, it’s equally as important to make sure that hooves aren’t wearing away too quickly. Providing extra support inside the hoof cavity by

using pour-in-pad materials, such as Equi-Pak, which can be injected under a pad or used as standalone pads, can help provide extra protection and support throughout every season. Shelter While a man-made shelter can be of obvious use to provide shade and protection during hot days, even structures as simple as trees can help horses regulate their body temperatures. Horses naturally work to maintain their body temperatures as temperatures rise by sweating, increasing their respiration and increasing water

consumption. They’ll also seek shady areas when available to help quickly cool down. Providing multiple areas and structures for horses to seek shady comfort can be a simple solution for the hottest of days. With a few adjustments and careful attention, owners can ensure they’re giving horses the right treatment throughout the summer. The Del Mar Race Track; An Experience to Treasure

Winner Circle With Mrs California, Mrs. Ontario, Winning Horse Mr. Hinx and owner Barber Gary Photos by William Casper Story By: Malinda HutchinsMrs. Ontario-America 2017 Walking through the ticket gates at the Del Mar Race track was an exhilarating experience. I knew I was in for a treat and excitement was in the air as the patrons flooded through the ticket gates. The energy from the grandstands, holding nearly 44,000 people, Where beautifully dressed women, who upheld the longstanding tradition of wearing glamorous hats. The elegant grandstands began to rumble with excitement. My husband and I, were honored to attend as Mr. and Mrs. OntarioAmerica 2017, where we joined Mr. and Mrs. California-America 2017 to present a trophy to one of the winners. With the electric starting gate positioned on the track in front sight, the trumpeter, Les Kepics, played the classic melody “Boots and Saddles”; As you may already know Thoroughbred horses have been called to post ten minutes prior to the race time for well over a century with the brief rendition of “Boots and Saddles” which has been synonymous with starting off the races since Del Mar first opened in 1937. The “Real Good Deal Stakes “ is exclusively reserved for California bred 3 year olds, As one of the invited guests, it was my honor and priviledge to present the awards to the winner of that showcased sixth race, Gallantly, some with a bit of race time anxiety, the beautiful thoroughbred horses galloped around as their Jockeys gracefully saddled up and Page 10

mounted their horses , proceeded to promptly make their way over to the track, taking their places . We also took our place lined on the very edge of the track anticipating the starter to fire his pistol and start the race. It was, in my opinion, the best seat in the house. From there the crowd roars behind, we could smell the earthy fragrance of the freshlyraked turf on the track, and the sweet ocean breeze and feel the pounding of the horses’ hooves as they thundered over the finish line. It was an honor presenting Flavien Malinda Hutchins Mrs Ontario, Les Kepic and Kristi Eddy Prat, who rode Gary Barber’s “Mr. Mrs. California Hinx,” into victory. “Mr. Hinx” trained by Steven Miyadi , surged to the lead winning $85,000 for their share of the $150,000 “Real Good Deal Stakes. ” and was a great victory to add to Mr. Hinx career earnings which are estimated to be nearly $326,048. To conclude our eventful evening at the track, we were invited to enjoy an awesome concert performance by The Violent Femmes who performed as part of Del Mar’s Summer Concert Series. The Del Mar Concert Series will continue on this summer to include such artists as Lord Huron, Slightly Stoopid, The Revivavlists, and Steve Aoki. After the last race, admission into the concert is only $20. Concerts are free with racetrack admission, Grandstand admission before the last race is only $6. There’s a smile on every face and a winner of every race. Where the Turf Meets the Surf at Del Mar! -Bing Crosby Kristi Eddy Mrs. California and Malinda Hutchins Mrs. Ontario

WORLD CHAMPION COWBOYS HEAD TO SOUTH ORANGE COUNTY TO COMPETE IN AMERCIA’S RICHEST TWO DAY RODEO! Ra ncho Mis s ion V iejo Rodeo Here T h i s We e k e n d

Photo by Kay Levie The nation’s top rodeo cowboys, ride into San Juan Capistrano this weekend – August 26 and 27, 2016 for the 17th Annual Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo, the richest two-day rodeo in America! Conducted at the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park in San Juan Capistrano, the annual Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo will produce some of the finest rodeo action in the nation as “the best of the best” in rodeo compete for $175,000 in prize money. Events scheduled for the two-day rodeo include Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Bull Riding, Tie-Down Roping, Steer Wrestling and Team Roping. Tickets are on sale now and will also be available at the Rodeo on a first come, first serve basis. “The 17th Annual Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo will feature the top 30 World Champion cowboys competing in each of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) events as they try to qualify for a place in the National Finals Rodeo,” said Gilbert Aguirre, Rodeo Committee President and Executive Vice President of Ranch Operations for Rancho Mission Viejo LLC, manager of the historic Rancho Mission Viejo cattle ranch in Orange County and master planner and developer of the Rancho Mission Viejo community. Aguirre noted that, while the annual Rodeo is a festive celebration of the golden age of early California rodeo tradition, it’s also an important part of the legacy of the Rancho Mission Viejo landholdings, which have been under the stewardship of the O’Neill/Moiso family since 1882. “This event is not only about wild horses and even wilder cowboys,” added Aguirre. “Hosting the Rodeo is our way of showing folks that we have a tremendous Western heritage, one that we feel privileged to share. The Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo allows us to keep our region’s cowboy culture alive while honoring the old cowboy tradition of

‘passing the hat’ in support of a sick child or needy friend.” Over the course of the last 17 years, $1.9 million in Rodeo proceeds have been donated to local charities. This year’s beneficiaries are the J.F. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center in San Juan Capistrano, CHOC at Mission Hospital and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley. More than 9,000 Rodeo fans are expected to attend over the weekend. In addition to the excitement taking place in the arena, attendees will have access to nearly 60 vendor

booths and activities for the whole family. Attractions include a beer garden, live music, mechanical bull riding, official rodeo gear and pony rides. LYON AIR MUSEUM TO HOST “BIKES & BOMBERS” MOTORCYCLE SHOW Lyon Air Museum will host the 6th Annual “Bikes & Bombers” on Saturday, August 26, 2017, from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM at John Wayne Airport. The event includes free spectator viewing of motorcycles, a People’s Choice Motorcycle Show, complimentary coffee and donuts, a World War II veterans and military re-enactors meet and greet, and a scheduled flight by a vintage World War II T-6 Texan aircraft. The event kicks off Saturday morning at 9:00AM featuring cruisers, sport bikes, customs and vintage motorcycles, with hundreds expected to attend. People’s Choice bike show entrants will be accepted until 10:00 AM. The People’s Choice winner will be announced at 11:45 and the winner will receive a flight in the T-6 Texan at noon (weather and mechanical considerations permitting). “As a local motorcycle enthusiast, I’ve been involved with “Bikes and Bombers” since the beginning, five years ago,” said Dana Welch, retired mortgage company vice president and volunteer lead for the event. “The great variety of motorcycles, the special displays inside the Museum, watching and hearing the winner of

the People’s Choice bike show take to the sky in the WWII T-6 Texan, and the super neat people I meet, has made it my favorite event to attend every year.” Lyon Air Museum will provide free exclusive motorcycle parking and, for those motorcycle riders interested in viewing the Museum, a discounted air museum admission rate of $8. Lyon Air Museum represents the fulfillment of a dream of founder General William Lyon. As a former

Chief of the U.S. Air Force Reserve, his passion for aviation history and youth education is the driving force behind Lyon Air Museum. In establishing the Museum, General Lyon has created a world-class facility offering inspirational and educational displays, with a primary focus on World War II aviation. The Museum has on exhibit some of the world’s rarest and pristine operational historic aircraft and vehicles. Lyon Air Museum is located at

19300 Ike Jones Road, Santa Ana, CA 92707. P: 714/210-4585. E: info@lyonairmuseum.org. W: www.lyonairmuseum.org. Therefore, access to Marriage and Passport Services on the 2nd floor of the Old County Courthouse during this time period will be limited. Clerk-Recorder Hugh Nguyen invites the public to take advantage of Passport Day in Santa Ana to get their pass-ports now and avoid last minute travel delays. Appointments for passport applications are recommended. To save time, passport applications can be completed in ad-vance online at OCRecorder.com. This milestone achievement maintains the department as a nationwide indus-

try leader and is a testament to the department’s commitment to bringing the residents of Orange County fast and efficient services. The department reached its 7 millionth electronically submitted document back in September 2014. While recording real property documents electronically is a common service today, in 1997 Orange County changed the industry by implementing the first elec-tronic recording delivery system in the nation. Current Orange County ClerkRecorder Hugh Nguyen was part of the team that im-plemented the first system. “People thought that it wouldn’t work,” Clerk-Recorder Hugh Nguyen said. “Many County Recorders in California couldn’t envision how a secure electronic process could be implemented. We worked with title industry leaders, overcame legal barriers and created a secure electronic delivery system. The new process required legislative approval and a lengthy two year process to work with the State on regulations. In 1997, the Orange County system was the pilot program which proved

the concept did work and formed the foundation for today’s system guidelines and procedures.” Clerk-Recorder Hugh Nguyen attributes much of the success to the vision of the late Gary Granville who was the Clerk-Recorder in 1997. The electronic recording system has provided efficiencies by reducing delivery expenses and staff time. Currently the department records 64% of all documents submitted for recording electronically. In 2008, the department joined with Los Angeles, Riverside and San Diego Counties to implement the current electronic delivery system known as SECURE. This system allows title, escrow, finan-cial and government institutions to record property documents electronically to multiple counties from one single computer screen.

Road trip tips to spice up summer It’s the great American summer travel tradition: the road trip. Whether you stay close to home or take off for a coast-to-coast jaunt, there’s no better way to enjoy the experience of travel as much as the destinations you visit. But a truly great road trip doesn’t just happen - it takes careful planning and the right gear. When you pull out the map to plot your route, start thinking of ways to make your road trip easier and more fun than any you’ve done before. Ensure everyone is involved in the planning stage, from mom and dad to the youngest kids, so that each family member feels that they’re contributing and putting their own spin on the trip. Before the big departure day arrives, create some great playlists, buy on-the-go snacks and be sure to give the car a thorough inspection. That way, when you’re ready to hit the road, you’ll be doing it in style (and safely). While planning will set the right tone for the trip, your on-the-road travel style can make your trip even more memorable. Keep these tips in mind to make your trip the ultimate road experience. * Save smart: One of your biggest expenditures on a road trip will be

gas, so keeping your budget in check means looking for the best deals at the pump. Luckily, you don’t have to drive to every gas station in town, or wait to see if the price is better at the next exit. Using the YP - Local Search & Gas Prices app, you can easily find the best gas prices nearby, along with directions for how to get there. Even if it’s a savings of a few cents per gallon, it can really add up - and leave more money for fun. * Get local: One of the greatest things about visiting new places is getting a taste of the local culture. Whether that means digging into a

slice of the famous pie at the best diner in town or picking up your morning java at the mom-and-pop coffee shop, you’ll enjoy the city like a local by trying out one-of-a-kind favorites. Use your smartphone and the YP app to discover all the favorite neighborhood spots. * Find extra fun: You can’t plan for everything - and in fact, you shouldn’t. Leave some room for improvisation, adding some unexpected adventures to the itinerary along the way. In fact, flexibility in schedule and the ability to sightsee are the two most appealing benefits of driving over

flying, according to a recent survey by YP. When you’re in uncharted territory, make the most of a smartphone by searching to discover local boutiques, gift shops, museums and more. The places you hadn’t planned on visiting might just end up being the most memorable part of your trip. There’s nothing that captures the carefree spirit of summer quite like a road trip. Make plans in advance and travel smart and you’ll embark on a road trip journey that everyone will remember for years to come. OC Fair & Event Center announces official unveiling of Agricultural Workers Memorial On Aug. 25, OC Fair & Event Center will officially unveil Table of Dignity, the newly renovated agricultural workers memorial. The public art piece commemorates the contributions of agricultural workers to the growth and prosperity of Orange County. The memorial was designed as a restful place for guests to gather and celebrate the beauty and abundance created by those who have worked in the fields and on the farms of Orange County. The memorial is comprised of three key design elements: two large-scale entry portals made of rammed earth (creating the impression of freestanding walls), a central sculptural table made of a large boulder and a single-cut tree slab (designed to commemorate agricultural workers’ contributions of food on our tables), and a perimeter bench constructed of large timber surrounding the landscape. A grape arbor stretching above the memorial is growing to create a shady place for visitors to pause and reflect. New additions to the memorial include plaques explaining the meaning and intention of the Table of Dignity and the names of OC Fair

board members recognizing their the rammed earth walls have been dedication to the project. The arbor renovated and stabilized. and additional seating have been The unveiling of the memorial will be added to the original design and held on Aug. 25 at 10 a.m. at the east

August Is National Immunization Month

By Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna Grant Yourself Immunity Every week it seems there’s some new virus, disease, airborne, food contamination in which we have to exercise caution around or get an immunization. Wouldn’t it be great if we could get an immunization against the 405 fwy and stop that spread of toxic traffic! How about from ruse and obnoxious people? I guess we can never rid ourselves of those, however, vaccine preventable diseases can be prevented if we take the time and get our immunization shots. Viruses and bacteria that cause illness and death still exist and can be passed on to those who are not properly vaccinated reminds Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. In addition we have more people coming to the United States and that also brings various viruses and diseases from other countries. The Center for Disease Control recognizes August as National Immunization month. Infants and the elderly are at Page 16

greater risk for serious infections and complications, but vaccinepreventable diseases can strike anyone. Approximately 50,000 adults die each year from vaccinepreventable diseases in the US. Make sure your children are upto-date on vaccines before sending them back to school. School-age children, from preschoolers to college students, need vaccines. Shots may hurt a little, but the diseases they can prevent are a lot worse says Chief DiGiovanna. It’s important to remember handwashing is like a “do-it-yourself” vaccine – it involves five simple and effective steps (think Wet, Lather, Scrub, Rinse, Dry) so you can stay healthy. Regular hand-washing, particularly before and after certain activities, is one of the best ways to remove germs, avoid getting sick, and prevent the spread of germs to others. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center Raises over $780,000 from “FANTASHEA” Gala Bill and Jenny Klein. Photos by: Pixel That! Photography “FANTASHEA—An Evening of Enchantment” drew a sold-out crowd of 430 friends and generous sponsors to support The J. F. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center’s 26th annual gala at the Montage Laguna Beach. It was a comfortable coastal late afternoon that began on the Pacific Lawn that led into an evening of fun, entertainment, sociability, gourmet food and drink, awards, extraordinary auction items and dancing into the night. The gala raised funds to support one of the leading therapeutic riding centers in the world, Shea Therapeutic Riding Center. Its mission for nearly 40 years is to improve the lives of people with disabilities through therapeutic horse-related programs. From its modern eightacre equestrian facility aside the open space of San Juan Capistrano, it annually serves over a thousand Orange County clients with special needs. One of the highlights was the “Wine Wall.” As guests approached the wall of flowers, fashionably clad white satin gloved hands reached out through the wall offering a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay. It provided a great picture opportunity. This year’s Michael Lewis Friends of the Disabled Award was presented John and Sharon Frank having fun at the Live Auction with Barry to John Frank of John M. Frank Construction, Inc., and to The Spinello Axelrod. Family – Erin, Mike, Cade and Lucy. John Frank was recognized for his 11 years of invested time, treasure and talent at The Shea Center. Today, he serves as its board’s chair. The Spinellos were honored for their wonderful inspiration to other families by sharing their experience as parents to young Cade, while in the midst of their own journey to find wellness for their son. The Michael Lewis award is named after The Shea Center’s first rider in 1978. It is now given annually to celebrate the contributions of individuals, organizations, families and companies that positively affect the lives of people with disabilities at The Shea Center and in the greater community at large. This year’s featured rider was four-year-old Carter Peddie, daughter of Jenny and Will Peddie. Carter was born with an extremely rare genetic condition called PURA Syndrome with a later diagnosis of cerebral palsy. When the Shea Center came into Carter’s life at age 3, some remarkable changes occurred which were told in a moving documentary shown on the Grand Ballroom video screens. Auctioneer David Silverman then came up and presented an array of eight experiential adventures – highlights were a helicopter ride and lunch at a Temecula winery; a private dinner party for The Spinello Family-Mike & Erin 12 guests, prepared by executive chef Craig Strong at Studio, Sean Howard and Cassie and kids Lucy and Cade. Fosheim. Montage Laguna Beach; and an unforgettable week in Paris, France. Silent auction items included stylish merchandise from Balenciaga, Coach, David Yurman, Ferragamo, House of Sillage, St. John, Movado, Ralph Lauren and Tesla, along with time pieces, riding lessons, jewelry and art. Also, there was a behind-the-scenes tour during the production of NCIS, seen on CBS, and VIP tickets to Real Time with Bill Maher, seen on HBO. Shea Center Executive Director Dana Butler-Moburg, announced after the weekend that proceeds from the evening were more than $780,000. Of that amount, over $310,000 was raised by the guests in support of the Fosheim Rider Support Fund, set aside specifically for rider financial aid and horse care. “It was a fantastic evening for our guests and for our clients,” said ButlerMoburg. “The generosity of our friends was overwhelming, we are truly grateful.” The Shea Center in San Juan Capistrano, CA, is a privately funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization addressing over 80 different physical and cognitive disabilities. Licensed therapists, certified instructors, and dedicated volunteers work with carefully trained horses in modern facilities to improve client strength, coordination and ability. Many clients speak their first words or take their first step at The Shea Center. For more information, visit www. sheacenter.org. Will and Jenny Peddie. Tyler & Brooke Bengard. The warm summer months call for some fun traveling with loved ones, however, trips can be less fun if fourlegged family members aren’t able to come along. Pet parents already know not to leave pets in the car on a hot day, but there are other factors to consider when your pets are tagging along for the ride. “Your pet’s safety and comfort while traveling are extremely important to help reduce stress for both the pet and owner,” said Jam Stewart, director of corporate communications at Mars Petcare. “Creating a safe space for your pet to travel not only shows responsible pet ownership, but also allows additional quality time for you and your furry best friend.” Keep these tips in mind when taking your pet on vacation this summer: Be sure your furry friend can join you in all areas. Unfortunately, not all accommodations love pets as much as pet owners do. Don’t forget to call ahead to the places you plan to visit to be sure your furry loved ones are welcome. It’s also imperative for owners to understand any rules for their pets at their destination, like keeping their pets on a leash. Making sure your pet is well socialized and comfortable visiting unfamiliar places also helps make the new experience fun and positive for your pet and for you. Don’t forget your pet’s ID. Microchipping your pet is one of the

most effective ways to ensure he or she can be reunited with you if lost. Combine it with on-collar identification tags and a GPS pet tracker, such as Whistle 3, which lets owners track their pets wherever their travels take them. Make sure your pet is comfy on road trips. It’s important to introduce your pet to your car slowly before embarking on a long adventure. You can also bring your pet’s favorite toys, blankets or bed to help him or her feel more at ease. If your pet is still

uneasy in the car, your veterinarian can provide options like essential oils, over-the-counter supplements or, if needed, prescriptions. Don’t forget the treats. While traveling, make sure your pet has healthy treats for the long ride. Treats such as Greenies and Pedigree Dentastix promote fresh breath and clean teeth for dogs. For treats your cat will love, try Temptations, which offers tasty treats in multiple flavors. “Pets make our lives healthier, safer and happier, and owners should

take the time to plan properly before heading out on the road with their pets to ensure a fun, safe and comfortable trip for all,” Stewart said. “Pets are part of the family and we want them to enjoy the trip as much as we do in order to have more opportunities to introduce them to new experiences and places.” For additional pet care tips, visit bettercitiesforpets.tumblr.com. I spy with my little eye: nutrients kids need for healthy vision

The struggle at the dinner table between parents and their picky eaters isn’t uncommon. Add in a food jag, when children fixate on a particular food and don’t want to eat anything else, and the struggle turns to worry - “Is my child getting enough nutrients in his or her diet?” While many parents worry that their children aren’t getting the right nutrients for proper overall growth, many also overlook the specific need of vitamins and nutrients for eye health. If their child’s vision is OK, then there’s no cause for worry. In fact, only 14 percent of parents are worried about their children developing vision problems in the future, according to a recent survey by Kelton/DSM Nutritional Products. Now’s the time to help children make food choices that are healthy and provide the right nutrients for their eye health. While carrots are a no-brainer when it comes to providing beta carotene (pro vitamin A) for healthy vision, a slew of other nutrients are necessary for eye health, including vitamin E, lutein, zeaxanthin and the omega-3s DHA and EPA. If you have a picky eater, try sneaking in foods that are rich in these eye-healthy nutrients. Dark leafy green vegetables (kale, spinach,

collards and turnip greens), eggs, broccoli, peas and corn are super stars when it comes to providing lutein and zeaxanthin. Fatty fish provide the omega-3s DHA and EPA. Oils, wheat germ and peanuts are loaded with vitamin E. Registered dietitian and author, Elizabeth Somer, provides ideas on how to sprinkle in these nutrients into

everyday meals. Idea 1: Whip steamed chard or spinach into mashed potatoes to make a healthy and eye-catching dish for your kids that is rich in lutein and zeaxanthin. Green mashed potatoes, anyone? Idea 2: Grate carrots and add them to pasta sauce to give it a boost of beta carotene.

Idea 3: Barring any nut allergies, blend peanut butter, wheat germ and a bit of honey to use as a fruit dip or sandwich spread. The peanuts and wheat germ add a kick of vitamin E. Idea 4: If your kids won’t eat fish to get their fill of omega-3s, look for foods, beverages and supplements fortified with fish oil or a vegetarian source of DHA from algae. - (BPT)

4 ways to save during the back-to - school season Back-to-school shopping can come with plenty of sticker shock, if you don’t plan ahead. This year, parents said they plan on spending more this year than last, with totals exceeding $900 to outfit and supply, according to a survey by Rubicon. To shave some dollars off that total, here are a few savvy strategies to save while preparing for school. Watch for extreme deals This is the key time of year to follow the cardinal rule of the extreme saver: Keep an eye on the ads for rockbottom prices on school essentials. In the weeks leading up to the start of school, it’s your time to save big. Take advantage of price matching A traditional frugal shopper will tell you not to settle for anything but the lowest price. If you have to make six lists and drive all over town, being a penny pincher costs dearly in time. Instead, compare those weekly ads and save yourself some time by taking advantage of price matching. Staples, for example, offers a 110 Percent Lowest Price Guarantee, meaning all you have to do is show proof of a competitor’s lower price, and Staples will not only match it, they tack on another 10 percent off. If you are interested in learning more, visit www.staples.com/backtoschool Stock up If you find some unbeatable deals,

stock up for next year. And don’t overlook this opportunity to replenish your home with art supplies to keep your child’s creative flow moving along. Either way, if Junior springs a due-the-next-day project on you, you’ll won’t have to go the store on an already busy weeknight. A great resource to stock up is the Less List for School offered by Staples,

which features season-low prices on the essentials, such as pencils, composition books, notebooks, crayons, batteries, glue and more. Don’t forget the thrift store Make more room in your budget by looking at secondhand options for big ticket clothing items like shoes, coats and jackets. Choose the basics

in solid colors for a timeless look. Sometimes, you’ll find a like-new, high-quality item hiding in the rack, and at a fraction of the price. At this level of spending, it’s smart to capture savings where you can. Even if you save 10 percent across the board, it’s worth it because you’re still going home with a handful of $10 bills in your pocket. - (BPT)

F r e s h m a k e u p l o o k s f o r b u s y b a c k -to - s c h o o l r o u t i n e s The back-to-school season will hasten the pace of morning routines for everyone, from busy moms to college students. Fitting your makeup regimen into a hectic schedule can make it challenging to achieve just the right look. Moms need a quick, easy look that holds up to daily demands with little maintenance. College women need versatility that will carry them from the classroom to the club. And first-time makeup wearers will experiment and explore to discover their own personal style. The pros at EcoTools maker of beauty tools using renewable, recycled and cruelty-free materials, offer some advice for creating three easy-to-manage looks for mothers, college students and new makeup wearers as back-to-school season gets underway. Mom’s flawless face As the days grow shorter, so does morning primping time. Getting the kids and yourself out the door on time doesn’t leave much room for a beauty routine. No one wants to pull up to the carpool line with under-eye bags and sallow skin, but painstaking makeup application just isn’t practical. Focus on the products that will provide the most impact in the shortest amount of time, including concealer, mascara and blush. EcoTools Fresh & Flawless Five Piece Complexion Set speeds Page 24

up morning makeup application by putting every brush you need at your fingertips. First, apply a coat of your favorite foundation over your entire face. A tinted moisturizer or foundation with SPF can be great time-savers. Cover imperfections with concealer, and buff out the edges to seamlessly blend together. Apply translucent powder to eliminate shine and create a smooth canvas and then eliminate any visible makeup lines with a clean brush. Apply mascara, blush and lipstick, and you’re ready to head out the door in pulled-together perfection. Chic college night out For daytime classes, concealer, mascara and blush serves college students well. At night, play up your best features while staying on-trend for fall. The EcoTools Six Piece Day-to-Night Clutch Set makes the transition from demure to diva a snap. Use concealer to touch up any unevenness in your complexion, and stop shine with a translucent powder. A round powder brush can do double duty as an applicator for bronzer or blush. Apply bronzer just under cheek bones and swipe blush just above the bronzer. Metallic eye shadows are hot this fall, and a stay-there shadow brush allows you to give lids a wash of copper tone. Create a smoky effect by applying and blending a darker brown shadow to the outer corners and creases of your eyes. Smudged dark-

The Coto de Caza News

brown liner and two coats of mascara complete the sultry eye effect. Finally, finish up with a neutral lipstick and let your eyes take center stage. Back to basics As first-timers begin to experiment with makeup, it’s best to keep things simple. Stick with the adage “less is more” to avoid clownish cheeks, over-lined lips and embarrassing class photos. The EcoTools Six Piece Starter Set makes it easy for even a makeup novice to achieve an effortless, clean minimalist makeup look. Use a concealer brush to gently dab concealer over blemishes or imperfections. Set in place with a layer of translucent powder, and apply

a rosy pink shade of blush to the apples of the cheeks. For the eyes, choose a neutral shadow that is close to your skin tone and apply it to the entire eyelid. A second shadow, two shades darker than your skin tone, can help define the crease of your eyelid. Apply dark brown gel liner close to your lash line and one coat of black or dark brown mascara. Bold brows are in, so don’t over pluck. Instead, use a lash and brow groomer to tame any stray hairs and brush brows into place. A swipe of sheer, shimmery lip gloss tops off this fresh, youthful look. To learn more about the looks mentioned and the tools needed to achieve them, visit EcoTools on Facebook. - (BPT)

E n t e r ta i n i n g w i t h a f r e s h, l o c a l t w i s t The pleasant weather of late summer and early fall is ideal for outdoor gatherings. Instead of a go-to meal of burgers and potato salad, explore your culinary side and try something fresh and different. Entertaining with local vegetables and flavorful garden herbs can be easy, healthy and delicious. Farmers markets are often the best source for ingredients straight from the garden. With the USDA National Farmers Markets Directory listing approximately 8,000 across the country, there is sure to be a great local market minutes from your home with everything you need for a perfect seasonal soirée. Menu magic Before heading out to purchase your ingredients, decide what’s on the menu for your party or get-together. Keep it simple. Fresh, local produce is full of flavor and doesn’t need to be used in an especially complex meal to satisfy taste buds. For an informal gathering, a salsa verde is an easy-tomake accompaniment to fish, chicken or pork and a delicious snack paired with baked, homemade tortilla chips. The salsa can be prepared in minutes using a high-powered blender like the Vitamix 5200, so you can spend less time prepping and more time enjoying your guests. For a more formal dinner with friends, make a twist on the traditional spaghetti and meatballs. Wholewheat pasta tossed with a healthy pesto makes for a lighter meal that’s perfect for a balmy evening.

Ingredients like kale, spinach, roasted red pepper, garlic and olive oil, along with fresh herbs and spices, blend together beautifully after just seconds in a Vitamix machine. Smart shopping Once you’ve completed your menu, it’s time to visit your local farmers market to pick up the ingredients. Arrive early, when the market is less busy, and familiarize yourself with the producers. Ask them questions about when the produce was picked and how to tell if it’s ripe, developing a relationship with them for future visits. If you’re shopping early in the week, make sure the ingredients you’re using for your dish will stay fresh until your weekend party, and ask the vendors for advice on storage. Have fun experimenting with new ingredients. Pick up a few golden beets, red dragon carrots or purple potatoes, which house amazing nutritional benefits and pack a tremendous amount of flavor into any meal. Clean, prepare and pair Clean your produce thoroughly and be aware that vegetables from farmers markets may have more dirt on them than the ones you pick up at the grocery store as they are fresh from the farm. Keep the preparation simple to allow the natural flavors to shine. To make your meals pop, plate them on inexpensive bamboo or melamine dinner plates in cheerful colors. Serving trays in dark colors or woods will complement the colorful

dishes and simplify the transport of food and utensils from the kitchen to your dinner table or patio. If you have extra fruit, vegetables or herbs, use them for a refreshing drink, such as cucumber lemonade for the kids, a blended green smoothie or a strawberry basil mojito for the adults. These fresh and delicious beverages will entice the senses and complete your farm-to-table meal. Tomatillo Salsa Yield: 1 cup Total time: 10 minutes Ingredients 8 tomatillos, peeled, stewed 2 scallions, halved 1/4 jalapeño, halved, seeded 1/2 garlic clove, peeled 1 teaspoon lime juice 1/2 cup fresh cilantro 1/2 teaspoon salt Directions Place all ingredients into the Vitamix container in the order listed and secure lid. Select variable 1. Turn machine on and slowly increase speed to variable 7. Blend for 15 seconds or just until chopped. If necessary, use tamper to push the ingredients into the blades while processing. Do not over-mix. Serve as a dip or as an accompaniment. Kale Pesto Yield: 1 1/4 cups Total time: 20 minutes Ingredients 4 cups chopped kale 1/2 cup olive oil

2 teaspoons red wine vinegar 1/4 cup roasted red pepper 2 garlic cloves, roasted, peeled 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme 1 teaspoon lemon zest 2 Tablespoons toasted pepitas 1/2 cup fresh spinach, loosely packed 1/4 teaspoon Kosher salt 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper Directions In a large pot of salted, boiling water, blanch 4 cups of kale for 4 minutes. Shock in a bowl filled with ice and water; strain. Once water has drained away, press out as much water as possible, leaving 1/2 cup of blanched kale. Place all ingredients into the Vitamix container in the order listed and secure lid. Select variable 7. Use the on/off switch to quickly pulse 15 to 20 times, using the tamper to press the ingredients into the blades. Serve over pasta, or with bruschetta and flatbread as a dip. - (BPT)

A+ college moving tips Across the country thousands of students are packing up their childhood rooms and heading off to a new adventure at college. The transition is equal parts exciting and nerve-wracking. The move itself, however, shouldn’t cause unneeded stress. While college students usually don’t have a lot of belongings that need to be moved, the process can be exhausting and overwhelming, especially if they’re moving across the country. Rather than relying on guesswork, take some tips from the moving experts at Penske Truck Rental: 1. Condense and store. College apartments are small and dorm rooms are even smaller. Leave nonessentials at home and pack only what you’ll use on a regular basis. Photo albums, fine jewelry and fragile knickknacks will be safer there anyway. As for what you’ll need, colleges typically provide a checklist of essential items that can be used as a guide. 2. Be prepared. Start packing early and create a running list of items you need to bring

but are unable to pack until it’s time to leave. Get sturdy boxes in a variety of sizes plus bubble wrap to protect your fragile items. You’ll also need packing tape and bold markers for labeling and securing boxes. Moving blankets and hand trucks will make the process easier. 3. Mark and group. Label the outside of boxes as you pack and add a generalized list of what’s inside for easy reference upon arrival. Remember to label the box with both your name and a symbol that will help you recognize what’s yours. When thousands of students are moving at once, this simple trick can cut confusion quickly. 4. Plan ahead. When renting a moving truck, reserve it at least two weeks in advance. Because summer and fall are popular times for moves, delaying could leave you without available transportation. Most college students find the 12- or 16-foot truck perfect for moving a few large items or the contents of a small apartment. For guidance with truck selection, visit www.PenskeTruckRental.com. 5. Drive safe.

When driving, remember that trucks are taller, wider and require more stopping distance than a standard vehicle. Use caution particularly when the truck is packed full. Watch out for low-hanging tree branches and building overhangs, and use extra caution when turning. 6. Stay secure. To protect your belongings, park in well-lit areas and padlock the rear door, especially if stopping for the night. If possible, back the truck up tight against a building wall to

prevent access to the storage area. Unfortunately, thieves take advantage of students on the hectic moving days leading up to the start of the academic year. 7. Keep a document bag. Keep important documents like registration information and dorm confirmations in a bag in the car with you for easy access. This should also include credit cards, your driver’s license and any other essentials. For more college moving tips, visit www. PenskeTruckRental.com. - (BPT)

Daring pairings: making a match of food and wine

Whether you’re a trained chef or simply enjoy cooking at home, there’s always a certain amount of trepidation at the thought of having guests for dinner. Do you go out on a culinary limb and serve something impressively daring, or do you play it safe with a tried and true menu? If you decide to take a chance, how daring are you? And, if your menu is an adventure for the taste buds, what wine do you pair with it? Recently, malbec received praise for being a versatile wine and a great choice for food pairing. In fact, when surveyed, more than half of culinary professionals agreed that malbec pairs with many types of foods. Whether you’re serving something wildly daring, such as five-spice crusted short ribs with miso black garlic jus, or something mildly daring, like rigatoni with spicy salami and tomato sauce, you can’t go wrong pairing it with malbec. Alamos Malbec, America’s most preferred malbec, is grown in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Argentina. The result is grapes that combine bold layers of flavor and excellent natural acidity for a wine that pairs beautifully with just about any meal. “Our unique growing conditions of intense sunlight and cool evening temperatures produce malbec grapes with incredible flavor making the wine highly versatile for pairing with food,” says Alamos Winemaker Felipe

The best kind of home improvements: high-impact, low-maintenance

Yes, everyone knows making home improvements is a worthy investment in your greatest material asset. Sure you want every improvement job done well with top-notch end results. But when all is said and done, do you really want to have to put a lot of effort and money into maintaining those improvements? For most people - whether they’ll admit it or not - the answer is “no.” The best home improvements are the ones that not only enhance your home’s value and livability, but also require little work from you afterward to keep them looking great and functioning well. If you’re looking for high-impact, low-maintenance home improvements, consider these popular projects: No-leak skylights When it comes to an improvement that brightens your home, enhances its indoor air quality and boosts energy-efficiency, skylights deliver. Unfortunately, early skylights had a reputation for being leaky - a problem that simply doesn’t occur with modern, no leak, energyefficient skylights like those made by Velux America. Pre-engineered flashing kits (the metal shield that surrounds any opening in a wall or roof) work with all types of roofs, from shingles to metal, to ensure a Page 28

properly installed skylight won’t leak. Need further low-maintenance points to make the case for adding a skylight? Not only do modern skylights keep water out, they’re energy efficient as well. Energy Star-qualified, no leak solar-powered fresh air skylights, like those from Velux, deliver fresh air through costeffective passive ventilation. Adding remote-controlled, solar-powered blinds allows you to easily open or close a fresh air skylight and shade it when the sun hits that part of the roof, boosting the skylight’s energy efficiency by 39 percent. Keep the shade open during cold weather to admit warmth and reduce heating costs. A 30 percent federal tax credit on both products and installation costs makes a skylight project even more appealing. Visit www.veluxusa. com for a tax calculator to show your savings for a new installation or replacement skylights and a skylight planner app to show exactly how skylights and blinds will look in any area of your home. Lighting upgrade Older light fixtures not only look dated, they often use outdated, inefficient bulbs and are lacking in the energy-efficient emphasis that comes with newer fixtures. Upgrading lighting throughout your

The Coto de Caza News

home is a great way to ensure you won’t have to think about it again any time soon. If a total lighting redesign is out of the question, you can still make your existing light fixtures lower maintenance simply by swapping out old, inefficient incandescent light bulbs with newer, electricity-sipping versions. Options like CFLs and LEDs provide all the light of incandescents while using a fraction of the energy. Energy.gov says Energy Star-rated LEDs use at least 75 percent less power than incandescent bulbs, and last 25 times longer. Imagine the time, hassle and money you’ll save not having to replace bulbs constantly - especially in lights that get a lot of use, like porch lights, or that are hard to reach, like the chandelier in your two-story entryway. Vinyl siding Wood, fiber cement, stucco, brick - there are nearly as many types of exterior siding as there are colors to paint it. When it comes to low- or no-maintenance siding, vinyl remains the gold standard. In fact, more new homes are built using vinyl siding than any other type of siding product, according to the Vinyl Siding Institute. While early versions of vinyl siding introduced in the 1950s earned

criticism for being less lovely than wood, even those less sophisticated versions had staying power; it’s possible to find homes in use today sporting vinyl siding that was added to the house in the 1970s or even earlier. Vinyl siding never needs to be painted, and when properly installed provides exceptional shielding from the elements. New technology has made modern vinyl siding look better and last longer without fading issues associated with older versions of vinyl. It requires basic cleaning, and overall maintenance demands are much less than other types of siding. Visit www.vinylsiding.org to learn more. - (BPT)
