Festival Of Arts Foundation Supports Art E d u c a t i o n P r o g r a m s a t t h e F e s t i v a l of A r t s
The Festival of Arts was awarded a $3,000 grant which made possible three of its summer art enrichment programs, Arts-X-Press, Boys & Girls Club Photo Club and Family Art Day. With the support of this funding, the Festival of Arts hosted seventh and eighth grade students participating in the Pacific Symphony’s summer arts immersion program, ArtsX-Press. These 270 students enjoyed complimentary hands-on art workshops and instruction in printmaking, scratch art and ceramics at the Festival’s Art Center. They also went on a private backstage tour of the Pageant of the Masters followed by a performance of “The Grand Tour” in the evening. Funding also goes to supporting the Festival’s partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach. Each year, the Festival hosts the club’s Photo Club where children meet artists, take photos, view the art and participate in art workshops. Additionally, over 200 children were able to take part in free workshops on Family Art Day, a special day at the Festival of Arts dedicated to families with kid-friendly art activities. “We’re very grateful for the support of the Foundation through this generous grant,” said Sharbie Higuchi, Marketing/PR Director. “Providing creative and educational
art experiences for children and young adults is extremely gratifying and beneficial to the community.” ABOUT THE FOA FOUNDATION The FOA Foundation, operating independently from the Festival of Arts and co-founded by John Rayment and David Young in 1989, was originally designed to award scholarships to graduates of Laguna Beach High School and grants to nonprofit art organizations and educational institutions in and about the city of Laguna Beach. In 2007, the Festival of Arts assumed the financial responsibility of the art scholarships, enabling The Foundation to focus on its grant program for local non-profit art organizations. ABOUT THE FESTIVAL OF ARTS The Laguna Beach Festival of Arts is a 501c3 with a mission to promote, produce, and sponsor events and activities that encourage the appreciation, study and performance of the arts. Throughout each year the Festival of Arts sponsors art education and provides art scholarships and grants. Every summer the organization hosts California’s premier open-air fine art show and produces the Pageant of the Masters. For general information, call 949-494-1145 or visit LagunaFestivalofArts.org.

The history of labor day By Charlotte Raynor Labor Day is celebrated the first Monday in September in the United States. It is a formation of the labor movement and is committed to the financial and social accomplishments of the American workforce. It represents an annual national accolade to the contributions people have given to the affluence, strength, and welfare of our country. Labor Day’s Founder After more than 100 years after the first Labor Day celebration, there is even now some uncertainty as to who was the first to suggest the holiday for people in the workplace. Several accounts explain that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, was the initial person in proposing a day to pay tribute to those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.” The fact of Peter McGuire being the founder of Labor Day has not gone uncontested. Numerous people think that Matthew Maguire, a machine operator, not Peter McGuire, created the holiday. The latest study appears to maintain the debate that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, New Jersey, suggested the holiday in 1882 while functioning as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. It is obvious that the Central Labor Union approved a Labor Day suggestion and selected a team to design a picnic
and exhibition. The Initial Labor Day The original Labor Day celebration was held on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in agreement with the policies of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union had its next Labor Day celebration a year later, on September 5, 1883. The first Monday in September was chosen in 1884 as the holiday, as initially suggested, and the Central Labor Union pushed for comparable associations in other cities to go along with the model of New York and commemorate a “workingmen’s holiday” on that day. The proposal broadened with the increase of labor groups, and in 1885 Labor Day was observed in many manufacturing places in America. The Legislation of Labor Day Over the years, the country gave growing importance to Labor Day. The first legislative acknowledgment came from municipal decrees passed
during 1885 and 1886. From those decrees grew the advance to secure state legislation. The first state bill was presented into the New York legislature, but the first to develop into law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. New Jersey, Colorado, New York and Massachusetts originated the Labor Day holiday by legislative ratification during that year. Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Nebraska followed the lead by the end of the decade. By 1894, 23 more states had approved the holiday in honor of people in the workplace and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act creating the first Monday in September of every year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. These days, street parades and picnics celebrate Labor Day. Some of the time there are speeches by important men and women. Each year on the first Monday in September, we honor the American worker.
If all the cars in the United States were placed end to end, it would probably be Labor Day Weekend. ~ Erma Bombeck

Healthy Picnic Recipes for Labor Day
By Sally Ann Murphy The key to a perfect picnic is the food - fun to eat and easy to make. The perfect Labor Day picnic for my family consists of barbecued chicken, potato salad, green bean salad, lemonade, and brownies. One thing that is guaranteed not to make a picnic fun, however, is if you are worried about gaining a ton while you are eating it. So, in the interest of keeping things fun for everyone, I have written this article to provide you with some healthy recipes for picnic favorites that will make everyone happy and not put an extra five pounds on your waistline! To keep things easy, two of the recipes can be made the night before, and two items are made from a mix (I know, I know, but I’m promising fun and easy, not Julia Child here!) Recipes: Barbecue Chicken This is an easy one. Sauté one green pepper, one clove of garlic and one onion in a skillet, add skinless, boneless chicken breasts, cover in barbecue sauce and simmer for about 20 minutes. Chicken is a wonderfully healthy food, most kids love it, and a little barbecue sauce isn’t going to send the calorie count through the roof. Potato Salad Potato Salad - would a Labor Day
picnic be complete without it? Boil 2 cups of water, 2 and ½ lbs. of cubed red potatoes and one 14 oz can of fat free chicken broth and cook until tender (about 25 minutes). Drain and let the potatoes cool. Mix one cup nonfat plain yogurt, the juice of one lemon, ½ cup chopped onion, 2 tablespoons fat-free mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and salt and pepper to taste. Mix potatoes and yogurt mixture, cover and chill overnight. For variety you can add a hard boiled egg (we don’t because of allergies), or diced cucumbers or celery if you like a little crunch to your potato salad. If this is too bland for you try adding thyme, dill, basil or oregano. Boiling food in fat free chicken broth is a little trick of my husband’s, and it works great for vegetables and pasta, too! Green Bean Salad Cook 1 lb. of fresh green beans and drain. Mix in 3 tablespoons of olive oil, 1/ 2 cup lemon juice, 1/ 4 cup minced onions, 1 tablespoon of minced garlic, 1/ 4 teaspoon black pepper and salt to taste. Cover and chill overnight - how easy is that? Green beans are a very healthy choice for a vegetable, and this recipe spices them up nicely. Lemonade You can’t have a Labor Day picnic without lemonade. Pick up some

Crystal Light - zero calories, easy to make (just add water) and lots of different, fabulous lemonade flavors (strawberry kiwi, anyone?) A healthy alternative to sugar laden sodas and other drinks. Brownies Brownies may not be the typical Labor Day treat, but they are easy and fun and everyone likes them. Pick up a package Betty Crocker Low Fat Brownie Mix - 130 calories per brownie - how easy is that? You can dress these up for people who don’t care for low fat brownies (e.g. your husband) - add some chocolate
frosting on top or sprinkle with nuts. Mmmm. This can be made the night before or the morning of your picnic, depending on whether or not you and your family like to eat brownies while they are still warm. And that’s it. Food that is quick, easy, and healthy as far as picnic fare goes (lean protein, green vegetable, starch, healthy fats, and a fun dessert!). Throw it in a picnic basket with a blanket, some paper products, and your sunscreen, and you are good to go. Have a happy, healthy, safe Labor Day, from my family to yours!

WEST COAST DEBUT OF THIS YEAR’S VAN CLIBURN INTERNATIONAL C O MPETITI O N G O LD MEDALIST, YE K W O N SUN W O O
Pacific Symphony’s Much-Loved Annual Favorite “Tchaikovsky Spectacular” Concludes the First “Summerfest” Season of Magical Music at Pacific Amphitheatre! Pacific Symphony ends every summer season with a spectacular bang, a burst of colorful fireworks and grand music! This year feels particularly significant, as the orchestra draws to a close its inaugural season in its new home at the OC Fair and Event Center on the triumphant note of “Tchaikovsky Spectacular.” Music Director Carl St.Clair leads this annual hit parade of Romantic masterworks, which also includes favorites by such mighty Russian masters as Shostakovich and Prokofiev. The concert features the brilliant virtuosity of the Van Cliburn gold medal winner, Yekwon Sunwoo, who performs Rachmaninoff’s exquisite and sweeping Piano Concerto No. 2. Capping off this memorable evening is the electrifying “1812 Overture,” featuring the Huntington Beach Concert Band—complete with cannons and brilliant fireworks— sending hearts racing and spirits soaring! “Our summer will close with the ringing of bells, the sound of canon fire and, of course, fireworks and Tchaikovsky’s ever-beloved ‘1812 Overture’—it’s always a memorable time!” says Maestro St.Clair. “Each year’s ‘Tchaikovsky Spectacular’ features an all-new program, and this summer the audience will be treated to a powerful performance of Rachmaninoff’s famed ‘Second Piano
Concerto,’ as well as great music by other top Russian composers. It is sure to bring our first summer at the Pacific Amphitheatre to a wonderful and fitting close!” A grand spectacle from beginning to end, “Tchaikovsky Spectacular” takes place Saturday, Sept. 9, at 8 p.m., in the Pacific Amphitheatre at the OC Fair & Event Center. Tickets are $25-$99. Pre-concert entertainment by the Huntington Beach Band takes place from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Plaza Pacifica entrance. All are welcome to bring their own food, wine and non-alcoholic beverages onto the premises, but glass containers and glassware are not permitted inside the amphitheater. Beer, along with additional food and beverages may be purchased at the concession stands inside the amphitheater. The gates open at 6 p.m. for picnicking. Picnic tables are available at the Plaza Pacifica entrance or patrons may picnic at their seats. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (714) 755-5799 or visit www. PacificSymphony.org. The evening is off and running right out of the gates, as the audience enjoys a short, wild ride via Shostakovich’s “Galop,” which sounds just like its name and is a musical sprint from the satirical operetta “Moscow, Cheryomushki.” Next is the program’s centerpiece, Rachmaninoff’s virtuosic showpiece—the achingly beautiful, grand and lyrical Piano Concerto No. 2—performed by this year’s Van Cliburn gold medal winner, pianist Yekwon Sunwoo. Sunwoo earned
his bachelor’s degree at the Curtis Institute of Music, his master’s at The Juilliard School, and also studied at the Mannes School of Music. The young, fast-rising star has already won first prizes at the 2015 International German Piano Award in Frankfurt, the 2014 Vendome Prize held at the Verbier Festival, the 2013 Sendai International Music Competition, and the 2012 William Kapell International Piano Competition. Rachmaninoff’s most popular piano concerto, the Second, is jam-packed with stunningly beautiful harmonies and melodies, sadness, melancholy, love and passion—and music almost anyone would recognize. From the first opening piano solo chords sounding like bells in a church, to magnificent and magical dialogue between clarinet, piano and violins in the second movement, until the grand tutti of orchestra and piano together in the end of the third movement, Rachmaninoff transports everyone—performers and listeners alike—to a unique and wondrous world. Thundering with drama and achingly beautiful, it’s so mesmerizing it calls to be heard over and over. Then—as if the audience isn’t already on the edge of their seat, the orchestra delivers Prokofiev’s lesser-known but highly rousing March in B-flat, Op. 99, before taking them by the hand to hear Tchaikovsky’s unabashedly romantic “Romeo and Juliet” Overture-Fantasy, one of the composer’s most-inspired and passionate melodies, telling the tale of the famous doomed
lovers. Full of tenderness and longing, Shakespeare’s tragedy and Tchaikovsky’s tortured personal life merge to produce the first true expression of his genius as a composer. This tautly constructed masterpiece with its irresistible melodies then gives way to a thrilling orchestral battle featuring fireworks, cannons and brassy fanfare for Tchaikovsky’s “1812” Overture. Tchaikovsky’s exhilarating music, with its distinct brilliant sound and victorious climax, becomes the quintessential conclusion for an evening of fireworks and orchestral music under the stars. As the Symphony welcomes the Huntington Beach Concert Band onstage and St.Clair signals for 16 cannon shots to be fired, fireworks light up the sky and the summer season comes to an unforgettable close. “Wherever Pacific Symphony performs, we dedicate ourselves to ensuring that our Symphony family has an exciting and rewarding experience,” says St.Clair. “This summer has been special, as we settled into our new life in the Pacific Amphitheatre at the OC Fair, and we’re grateful to our loyal patrons who made the move with us. And, of course, we also look forward to welcoming everyone back to the concert hall in September!” Summer Festival 2017 is made possible by supporting sponsors The Orange County Register, Westin South Coast Plaza and media sponsors PBS SoCal, K-Earth 101, KPCC and KUSC.

Thrilling 47-48 Nailbiter in Tesoro vs Edison Football Opener By: Walt Williams Photos: Cindy Williams With much anticipation, the 2017 edition of the Tesoro High School Titans varsity football team opened their season at home Friday night against the heavily favored Edison Chargers from Huntington Beach who were fresh off a 2016 campaign that included a Sunset League championship. A pre-game ceremony honoring all Titan senior football players and senior pep-squad members with their families got the evening rolling. The Titans received the opening kickoff and on the very first offensive play, senior quarterback Chase Petersen called his own number on a zone run play and ripped around the outside of the Charger defense for a 77-yard gain, advancing the ball all the way to the 3-yard line. Three plays later Petersen drove the ball up the middle for the first Titan touchdown. The Titans defense, led by senior defensive end James Williams held the Chargers potent air attack on their possessions. Tesoro’s third offense series featured Petersen connecting with junior wide receiver Joe Morenc for the second score of the evening putting the Titans up 14-7 with 3 minutes left in the 1st quarter. At the 8:51 mark in the 2nd quarter, Edison concluded a long drive of their own with a touchdown, making the score 14-7. On the ensuing kickoff, behind a bevy of blockers, sophomore cornerback and return specialist Kyle Schaefers raced 99 yards down the sideline for another Titan touchdown, making the score 21-7 with 8:37 left in the 2nd quarter. The Chargers next possession stalls, and the Titans took over on their own 32-yard line. After a series of run and pass plays orchestrated by first-year offensive coordinator Tom Kirchmeyer, the Titans found the end zone again after a 55-yard strike from Petersen to senior receiver Seth Gilmore. The Chargers, not be outdone, mounted a drive on their next possession resulting in a touchdown with 1:33 left in the first half. The score at halftime was 28-14. The Chargers vaunted offense started to catch fire in the second half behind a short passing game and tenacious running. With the Titans defense seemed on their heels, the Chargers reeled off 20 unanswered points in the third quarter. With 27 seconds left in the third, Titan receiver John Cody was the benefactor of a tipped ball and raced 80 yards down the sideline to the Edison 5. Two plays later, Petersen found Gilmore in the back of the end zone, making the score 35 to 34 Tesoro. After another surgical scoring drive by Edison, the Titans offense took the field backed up on their own 10-yard line. On the next play, a Petersen Page 10
pass was tipped and an Edison defender snatched it and raced into the end zone, leaving the score 47 to 35 in favor of the Chargers. The Titans ripped off a 45-yard kickoff return, but were unable to capitalize on their great field position. A scrappy Titans defense put the Chargers in a 3rd and 9 situation, where waiting defender Nate Bernhard snagged the Edison pass attempt for the second Titan interception of the night. With 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter, the Titans offense mounted another scoring drive and Morenc found the end zone yet again after catching a 7-yard bubble screen from Petersen. The point after touchdown attempt failed, leaving the score 48 to 41 in favor of Edison. The Chargers were only able to muster one first down against a tired Tesoro defense that seemed to be finding it’s sea legs. With 3:18 left in the 4th quarter, the Titans offense took the field yet again. A long reception by Morenc and 29yard scamper by senior running back and safety Vinnie Vladic, the Titans moved the ball to the 1-yard line. On the next play, Petersen leaped over both offensive and defensive lines and into the end zone to make the score 47-48 Chargers. Titans head coach Matt Poston did not hesitate for one second before deciding to go for the 2-point conversion. Petersen connected with Gilmore on a 2-yard dig route and as evidenced by instant replay landed with both hands under the ball and with the ball breaking the plane of the goal line. However, after much confusion and indecision, the referees declare the 2-point attempt no good. Edison gets the ball back with 1:35 left on the clock leading by one point, 48 to 47. With a combination of good defense and good clock management, the Chargers are forced to punt the ball back to the Titans, who take over on the Chargers 37-yard line. With no timeouts left, the Titians drive the ball down to the 20-yard line. With 3 seconds left on the clock, junior kicker Joe Rizkallah attempts a 37yard field goal for the game winner that sailed wide right with no time left on the clock. Even with the loss, the head coach Matt Poston and the Titan faithful have a lot to look forward to given the performance of the team in their home opener. After the game, Coach Poston commented,” It was an outstanding opening game of the season from two great teams. While it’s disappointing to come out on the losing end of things this is a game that is going to help our team down the line. I am proud of the guys for their effort tonight!” Tesoro plays La Habra tonight at 7 p.m.

SANTA MARGARITA DOMINATES DOWNEY 56-0 IN SEASON OPENER
Senior Chad Magyar had another stellar night where he led the Santa Margarita Eagles in scoring with three touchdowns, rushing yards (113), and receiving yards (66). By: Sean Zeitler Photos by: Robert Russell The wait for the 2017 season is over. The long, hot summer weeks of going head-to-head with friends in the same jersey have come to a close. The time to take out frustration on the opponents is finally here. Last Friday’s season opener against the Vikings of Downey High School went swimmingly, as the Santa Margarita Eagles (1-0, 0-0) shut out the host team by a score of 56-0. Offensively, the Santa Margarita Eagles one again showed a balanced attack by totaling 278 passing and 259 rushing yards. In his Santa Margarita debut, the Santa Margarita Eagles were led by senior quarterback Josiah Norwood, who completed 19 of his 27 passes (70%) for 228 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. On the receiving end of those completions were seniors Chad Magyar, who hauled in five catches for 66 yards (13.2 average), Utah-commit Malone Mataele’s five catches for 48 yards with two touchdowns, and Fresno State-commit Johnny McCartan who had two catches for 44 yards. Getting in on receiving touchdowns were senior Mark Eaton, who had three catches for 35 yards and a score, Kareem Amer captured his first varsity touchdown on his lone catch of the evening which went for 50 yards courtesy of quarterback Hunter Cifuentes. Sophomore wideout Chase Nenad in his first varsity action had one memorable catch for 13 yards and a score as well. In the running game, the Santa Margarita Eagles collected 259 rushing yards courtesy of the powerful running by Magyar, who led the Santa Margarita Eagles with 12 carries for 113 yards and three touchdowns, while Mataele provided four carries for 53 yards of his own. Junior Jake
Thomas got his share of carries with five for 36 yards as did Bryce Williams who carried the ball five times for 34 yards. Norwood showed his ability to keep plays alive, rushing three times for 25 yards. Defensively, the Santa Margarita Eagles were too overpowering for the Vikings, tallying 59 total tackles, a sack, 2 tackles for loss and an interception. Leading tacklers for the Santa Margarita Eagles were senior captain Caden Fitch (2 solo, 8 assisted), Sean Toohey (2 solo, 7 assisted) and Jake Delaney (2 solo, 3 assisted) with Blake Bianchini hauling in his first varsity interception. The stout defense held the Vikings to just 130 passing and 121 rushing yards. Senior Utah-commit Malone Mataele. For the special teams, senior kicker Dylan Brady had a busy evening with nine kickoffs resulting in eight touchbacks and was successful on eight of eight PAT’s. Despite having two touchdowns called back, Mataele had two punt returns for a total of 52 yards with a long of 39 yards, and a kickoff return for 40 yards. Next on tap for the Santa Margarita Eagles will be their second consecutive away game when they take on the Cubs of Loyola High School tonight at 7:00pm. Loyola (1-0, 0-0) defeated Fairfax High School last week by a score of 527. Loyola plays out of the Mission League alongside league champion Serra of Gardena to whom the Santa Margarita Eagles defeated last year in the Division 1 first round. How w a r m i n g w e at h e r a ff e c t s h o r s e s Increasing heat and drier conditions mean outdoor animals of all kinds are forced to adapt as the summer season marches on. The sweltering temperatures in many parts of the country can have a multitude of effects on these animals that are in the sun and heat throughout the day. Horses are a primary example of outdoor animals that experience the effects of the temperatures and must adapt. However, there are ways that owners can help ease the strain of summer on their horses in a few different key areas. Nutrition Oftentimes, a horse’s diet will require adjustments during the hot temperatures of summer, especially during extreme heat. Perhaps the largest nutritional concern for horse owners is making sure to provide plenty of fresh water to ensure proper hydration. As temperatures climb, horses, like most animals, will naturally feel the need to consume higher volumes of water. However, it’s the owner’s responsibility to make sure the proper amount is available. Hoof Care Typically, as seasons change and the weather starts to get warmer, hooves will start to grow and develop at normal rates after the lull in growth throughout the cooler months. During this time, it is especially important that horses receive consistent trimming and maintenance from hoof care professionals. In addition, it’s equally as important to make sure that hooves aren’t wearing away too quickly. Providing extra support inside the hoof cavity by
using pour-in-pad materials, such as Equi-Pak, which can be injected under a pad or used as standalone pads, can help provide extra protection and support throughout every season. Shelter While a man-made shelter can be of obvious use to provide shade and protection during hot days, even structures as simple as trees can help horses regulate their body temperatures. Horses naturally work to maintain their body temperatures as temperatures rise by sweating, increasing their respiration and increasing water
consumption. They’ll also seek shady areas when available to help quickly cool down. Providing multiple areas and structures for horses to seek shady comfort can be a simple solution for the hottest of days. With a few adjustments and careful attention, owners can ensure they’re giving horses the right treatment throughout the summer. Barbecue Recipes for Labor Day Make Your Barbecue on Labor Day a Success with These Recipes! By Carol Whyte Labor Day is a holiday that millions of Americans look forward to. Labor Day is also an important marker in our yearly calendar because it means the closing of swimming pools, no more wearing white, and it’s a time that many take their last vacation for awhile. It’s also a day to celebrate too! Many Americans have a barbecue, picnic, attend a parade, or even view fireworks if they can. If you’re one of the millions planning on having a Labor Day Barbecue, then you’ll want to check out the following recipes. Sweet Barbecue Sauce (I love anything sweet and the following recipe is delicious, especially on grilled chicken!) 1 cup ketchup ¼ cup apple juice ¼ cup apple cider vinegar ¼ cup of Worcestershire 1 teaspoon of garlic powder ½ teaspoon of onion powder Salt and Pepper to taste Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and mix. Bring to a boil and then allow the sauce to simmer for about 20 minutes. Another nice feature is to add apple
wood chips to your charcoal or gas grill before grilling the chicken. Sauce should be put on grilled chicken for the last 10-15 minutes of grilling. Beer Can Chicken This is an oldie but goodie! Try grilling your chicken using ½ a beer! The beer gives your chicken a very flavorful taste. You can add your favorite barbeque sauce for the last 10-15 minutes of grilling. ½ cup barbecue sauce (your home made recipe or store bought!) 1 12 oz. can of beer (need only ½) 1 tablespoon of onion powder 1 teaspoon of garlic powder 1 teaspoon of basil (dried) 1 teaspoon of paprika Salt and Pepper to taste One Whole Chicken (about 3 ½ pds.) Combine all spices and mix well before rubbing mixture onto chicken. Pour out half can of beer and place the can of the beer into the cavity of the chicken. (It will look odd, as if the chicken is sitting on top of can.) Put the chicken on the grill and cook for 1 to 1 ½ hours (be sure not to overcook). Keep cover on grill. Put barbeque sauce over chicken and grill in last ten minutes of baking time.
When complete, remove the beer can and discard. Place chicken on plate and add extra sauce as needed or desired. Baked Barbecue Chicken (This is the easiest of all three recipes!) 1 3 to 3 ½ pound chicken, cut into pieces 2 teaspoons garlic powder Dash salt and pepper 1 ½ cups of your favorite barbecue
sauce (mine is Sweet Baby Ray’s!) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Take chicken pieces and sprinkle with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake chicken for at least 1 hour. After one hour, drain any chicken fat from pan and then return chicken to pan. Cover with your favorite sauce and bake again (this time uncovered) for approximately 20-25 minutes.
Remember your pets in this extreme heat, too With extremely hot weather forecasted for the next few days, the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center is urging animal owners to remember that heat affects our pets too. Animals have higher body temperatures than we do and less ability to cool down. Humans are covered with sweat glands, but our pets’ sweat glands are confined to their nose, mouth and pads of the feet. An over-heating dog, for example, can only regulate its own body temperature through panting, which is not terribly effective in extremely hot weather. You can take precautions to keep your pet safe during this heat wave: NEVER, under any circumstance, leave an animal in a parked car. This is very dangerous, as the temperatures inside a car increase greatly in hot weather. Always ensure your pet is kept in a well-ventilated area. It is not appropriate to house a pet in a garage or on a patio. Ideally, during Page 16
a heat wave, your pet should be kept indoors in a temperature-controlled environment. Be careful when walking your dog on hot pavement. Dogs’ paw pads can easily burn if they are forced to walk on a hot surface. Test the temperature of the pavement by placing your palm on it for one minute. If you can’t take the heat, neither can your dog. Exercise your dog in the early morning or cool evening hours. Be extra careful with dogs that are brachyalphalic, such as pugs, bulldogs and boxers. These breeds have a tougher time breathing, since their noses are short. If you notice that your pet is panting excessively, is extremely thirsty, has glazed eyes, or has bright red gums or a tongue, the animal may be overheating. In any of these cases, contact a veterinarian immediately. For more information, or if you are concerned about an animal that may be in distress, call 949-470-3045.

Santa Ana Zoo’s 2017 Zoofari Celebrates Silver Anniversary
The Newmeyer Family - Photo by Ann Chatillon Everything was glittering silver at The Friends of the Santa Ana Zoo (FOSAZ) the non-profit 501(c)(3) organization’s 25th annual Zoofari blacktie gala benefiting the Santa Ana Zoo. With more folks attending this year, in fact there were almost 45 more from last year, guests were wearing their best black-tie and silver anniversary attire as Zoofari takes place at one of the most exotic venues in Orange County, outside and under the stars on the grounds of the Santa Ana Zoo. Guests enjoyed a first-class dining experience catered by Parties by Panache with a hosted bar including a special drink, the “Satin Sparkle” – which was of course a celebratory glass of Champagne with a rim of silver sparkled sugar. Decorations were provided by R.W.B. Party Rentals which put a special “bling” in the air with colors of silver, black, white and lavender. Elegance was everywhere on the grounds of the Santa Ana Zoo with beautiful statues, pillars and furniture that created a sophisticated flair to celebrate the historic year. “We are very excited to be celebrating 25 years, Zoofari has grown from a dedicated group of Zoo supporters who gathered to enjoy a festive evening to celebrate all that the Santa Ana Zoo has to offer”, said Cathi Decker, event host and Executive Director of FOSAZ. “Through the years, we’ve experienced fantastic themes, delicious food, creative drinks and have engaged many wonderful supporters who have donated their time, money and talents – it means so much especially raising the funds needed for all Rib and Karen Ripple with Chuck Street - Photo by Ann Chatillon the special projects and improvements going on here”. Guests began the night being greeted by various animals and their docent “handlers”. An Armadillo, Spectacled Owl and a French Rooster, a few crawly things and of course Danny the Pony were just some of the wildlife that welcomed everyone as they entered the Santa Ana Zoo. Guests were also privy to tour the zoo grounds and see the area where the new Giant River Otters habitat is being created, the construction of the Fifty Monkey Ferris Wheel and of course the 50 monkeys the Santa Ana Zoo is famous for. Commander Chuck Street, a long-time airborne traffic reporter for KISS-FM radio and former Executive Director of the Santa Ana’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency and current FOSAZ Board Member Rip Ripple were the Masters of Ceremonies for the evening with Glen Fladeboe coming back as auctioneer for the live auction. Honorees this year were Peggy Baldwin-Butler of the Tudor House Entertainment and James Howe of Bert L. Howe & Associates, Inc. BaldwinButler has been a longtime supporter and underwriter for Zoofari and the Santa Ana Zoo while Howe is an instrumental underwriter for the upcoming Fifty Monkey Ferris Wheel set to be unveiled at the end of this year. The event netted close to $100,000 which included almost $52,000 from the silent and live auction where funds will be going towards the Giant River Otter exhibit and upgrades to the Santa Ana Zoo. Silver Anniversary live auction items up for grabs were an Apple 10.5 Cathi Decker and David Exline Cathy and Curtis Farrell - Photo inch iPadPro and Apple Pencil donated by FOSAZ Board Member Howard Photo by Sheri Determan by Ann Chatillon Hall; an eight day vacation house in Cathedral City with a private tour for six at the Living Desert donated by FOSAZ Board Member Patty McClendon; Parties by Panache donated a decadent dinner with wine pairings and all the trimmings for a luxury dinner in the winner’s home; FOSAZ Board Member Curtis Farrell donated an eight day vacation in Villa del Palmar Cabo San Lucas Beach Resort & Spa including an $800 ‘get you there’ VISA gift card; a Karl Lagerfeld, Paris Floral White Tote Bag donated by FOSAZ Board Member Patty McClendon along with 100 California scratchers (donated by FOSAZ Board Member Rip Ribble) and over $700 in cash donated by FOSAZ Board, Advisory Board Members and Zoo Staff; and a private tour with the Zoo Director of the Santa Ana Zoo with rare behind the scenes with the animals along with a sit-down lunch. I must say that the winner of the Karl Lagerfeld tote went to Susan Howe, she won the iPad and the tote; she bids on the purse almost every year – she is one of the Zoo’s favorite auction bidders! After the program, the dance floor was packed with guests dancing to the lively tunes of “Groove Factory”. Established in 1952, the Santa Ana Zoo is Orange County’s is recognized as signifying excellence and commitment to animal care and conservation. It is also home to more than 150 animals, including 50 of the most interesting and engaging monkeys and several endangered species. How to Cool Off Quickly After Being in the Heat By Sophie Spyrou If you have spent any length of time outside in intense heat, it will not take long to start feeling the effects of the raised temperatures. What can you do to cool off quickly after being in the heat? Immerse Your Feet in Ice Cold Water After you have been out in the heat, you will notice that your feet will swell up, even if you have taken care to choose a comfortable pair of shoes that do not constrict your feet but allow them room to breathe. Help relieve the swelling of hot, tired feet and cool off at the same time by immersing your feet in a large bowl filled with ice cold water. Fill a large bowl with cold water and add plenty of ice cubes to cool feet down even quicker. You will soon feel a drop in temperature, as your feet cool off and the swelling goes down. Spritz with Cold Water A small bottle that is full of cool water can help cool you off when you have been out in the heat. Spritz yourself with a cool mist of water on your arms, legs, neck and other areas to help cool you down. The light misting of water will replicate sweat on the surface of the skin and will provide a pleasant cooling sensation when it dries up.
Drink Plenty of Water Water will help offset the effects of dehydration and heat exhaustion by offering refreshment and replenishment for lost fluids. But it can also help to cool you down when you have been outside in the heat. Do not guzzle a whole bottle of water at once. Rather, drink slowly and at
regular intervals. It is important to try to cool off quickly when you have spent a period of time outside in the heat so that you do not feel the ill effects of the heat. A good way to cool off is to immerse your feet in a bowl of ice cold water. The ice cold water will soothe hot, swollen feet and help to cool the
body down. Spritzing with cold water can also help you to cool down, by providing a light mist that cools the skin in much the same way as sweat does, when it dries off. Drinking plenty of water can also help to cool you off when you have spent time in intense heat.
Top Five Tips for Growing Beautiful Roses From June to Sept., roses add a special flourish to yards, gardens and public parks throughout the U.S. But for many gardeners, tending roses may seem intimidating. With 23 years of experience, Jamie Shiffer, head gardener at Hershey Gardens in Hershey, Pa., knows a thing or two about cultivating a beautiful rose, in all of its varieties. Here are Shiffer’s top five rose gardening tips for gardeners of all experience levels: Plant and fertilize early. Consider planting new rose bushes in early spring. “Both new and existing rose plantings will need to be fertilized at this time,” says Shiffer. He recommends applying a slow-release fertilizer surrounding the base, such as the GreenView with GreenSmart Rose Food, which is formulated with essential macro and micro nutrients that provide extended feeding for up to 12 weeks. Research reveals it helps to produce superior plant growth, improve plant health and vigor, and increase buds, blooms and plant yield. After fertilizing, thoroughly water your roses. If desired, you can apply two inches of mulch around the plant. Avoid over watering. “You should
water roses sparingly throughout the very hot season,” recommends Shiffer. “The biggest mistake people make when watering is to water from overhead with a hose, instead of at ground level,” says Shiffer. Watering from above, Shiffer explains, can cause black spots to appear on the petals and throughout the day. As the heat intensifies, the water on the petals promotes fungal growth. To avoid this, water at ground level first thing in the morning. Prevent black spot. While good watering techniques can prevent fungal growth, for some gardeners, a humid environment can still lead to the same problem. “Treat black spot using a fungicide spray application on the plants every two weeks,” says Shiffer. Prune for increased plant growth. To encourage rejuvenation and growth from your rose bushes, be sure to deadhead through Sept. Count from the blossom down to the fifth leaf and make an angled cut. Maintain throughout each season. Regardless of variety, roses require year round maintenance. Use this calendar as a guide to care for your rose bushes: March – Thin out the plantings; cut
them back to 8 or 12 inches in length. April – Beginning in late April or early May, fertilize roses with a slowrelease fertilizer that will last for 3 months, such as GreenView with GreenSmart Rose Food. May to Oct. – Use spray application on roses every two weeks. From June to Sept., deadhead your plantings, so they will push new growth. Sept. – Remove rose petals without
cutting the bulb off completely. Nov. – Cut all roses back for the winter to 32 inches in height. For novice gardeners, Shiffer recommends starting with star roses or knockout roses, as they are among the most disease and insect resistant. “They come in many different colors and produce blooms throughout the year,” says Shiffer.

Thousands of Volunteers to Make Orange County Beaches Sparkle with World’s Largest Trash Cleanup On September 16, thousands of Orange County residents will head to sites across the county to play their part in the world’s largest trash cleanup for Coastal Cleanup Day. Registration is now open for all 51 cleanup sites in Orange County, organized by Orange County Coastkeeper and Trails4All. Orange County beaches and waterways collect trash that travels from inland communities via the county’s rivers and storm drains. Beach cleanups stand as a last line of defense to prevent this debris from polluting the ocean and its wildlife. Orange County’s cleanup sites are included as part of California Coastal Cleanup Day, which encourages volunteers to leave the Golden State’s beaches sparkling. This statewide event is part of the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, the largest volunteer event on the planet. Last year, more than 7,200 Orange County volunteers collected more than 56,600 pounds of trash and recyclable materials during the threehour event. Some of the most obscure findings included Keurig machines, soda cans from the 1980’s and a Bosu balance ball. “So many people don’t understand the impact of coastal pollution until they see it up close,” says Lauren
Smith, Orange County Coastkeeper’s volunteer coordinator. “At Coastal Cleanup Day, people learn that small actions like removing trash from the sand can have a huge ripple effect.” Coastkeeper, the Huntington and Bolsa Chica State Beach Interpretive Offices and local partners will be hosting a Trash Free OC Jamboree at three cleanup locations after the event. The events will feature educational games and activities, sponsor booths and prizes and a celebration to all of our dedicated volunteers. These events will occur at Huntington State Beach and the Back Bay Science Center. The third location will be announced soon on Coastkeeper’s website. Attendance is free and supplies will be provided. However, Coastkeeper aspires to accomplish a low-waste event and asks that volunteers bring their own cleanup supplies including a bucket or reusable bag, gloves and reusable water bottle. In addition to volunteering, residents and businesses can support Coastal Cleanup Day with donations and sponsorships. To register for Coastal Cleanup Day and find the site closest to you, visit www.coastkeeper.org/ccd. For more information, contact Lauren Smith at lauren@coastkeeper.org.

The warm summer months call for some fun traveling with loved ones, however, trips can be less fun if fourlegged family members aren’t able to come along. Pet parents already know not to leave pets in the car on a hot day, but there are other factors to consider when your pets are tagging along for the ride. “Your pet’s safety and comfort while traveling are extremely important to help reduce stress for both the pet and owner,” said Jam Stewart, director of corporate communications at Mars Petcare. “Creating a safe space for your pet to travel not only shows responsible pet ownership, but also allows additional quality time for you and your furry best friend.” Keep these tips in mind when taking your pet on vacation this summer: Be sure your furry friend can join you in all areas. Unfortunately, not all accommodations love pets as much as pet owners do. Don’t forget to call ahead to the places you plan to visit to be sure your furry loved ones are welcome. It’s also imperative for owners to understand any rules for their pets at their destination, like keeping their pets on a leash. Making sure your pet is well socialized and comfortable visiting unfamiliar places also helps make the new experience fun and positive for your pet and for you. Don’t forget your pet’s ID. Microchipping your pet is one of the Page 24
most effective ways to ensure he or she can be reunited with you if lost. Combine it with on-collar identification tags and a GPS pet tracker, such as Whistle 3, which lets owners track their pets wherever their travels take them. Make sure your pet is comfy on road trips. It’s important to introduce your pet to your car slowly before embarking on a long adventure. You can also bring your pet’s favorite toys, blankets or bed to help him or her feel more at ease. If your pet is still
The Coto de Caza News
uneasy in the car, your veterinarian can provide options like essential oils, over-the-counter supplements or, if needed, prescriptions. Don’t forget the treats. While traveling, make sure your pet has healthy treats for the long ride. Treats such as Greenies and Pedigree Dentastix promote fresh breath and clean teeth for dogs. For treats your cat will love, try Temptations, which offers tasty treats in multiple flavors. “Pets make our lives healthier, safer and happier, and owners should
take the time to plan properly before heading out on the road with their pets to ensure a fun, safe and comfortable trip for all,” Stewart said. “Pets are part of the family and we want them to enjoy the trip as much as we do in order to have more opportunities to introduce them to new experiences and places.” For additional pet care tips, visit bettercitiesforpets.tumblr.com. Keeping Bugs at Bay When the weather’s right for enjoying the backyard, the last thing you want is to have your good time spoiled by pesky insects. Fortunately, there are things you can do to protect family and friends from mosquitoes and other insects. Controlling Mosquitos Not only are mosquitoes a nuisance, they can be harmful to your health. To reduce your risk of getting mosquito bites – and exposure to West Nile virus – the Environmental Protection Agency recommends that you take some preventative measures around the yard: Eliminate standing water. Check old tires, buckets, plastic covers, toys, or other containers where mosquitoes can breed. Empty and change water in fountains, bird baths, wading pools, rain barrels and potted plant trays at least once a week to destroy potential mosquito habitats. Drain or fill temporary pools of water with dirt. Keep swimming pools treated and circulating. Make sure rain gutters are unclogged. One of the easiest steps you can take is to select an insect repellent that is right for you and your family. “As a pediatrician and as a mom, I get questions all the time about the
correct insect repellent to use,” said Dr. Gwenn O’Keeffe. “It’s important that families remember to use repellents regularly, just as you would sun protection.” Cutter brand offers a range of insect protection, from personal repellents and sprays to backyard foggers. Dr. O’Keeffe says it’s important to consider the length of time you plan to stay outdoors and your activities – it will impact the type of repellent and active ingredients you choose. Whether hosting a party or just spending time in the garden,
homeowners can protect themselves and their guests by taking simple actions to help prevent insect bites. Consider the following steps when protecting your guests and outdoor spaces from mosquitoes: Select a personal insect repellent that works best for you and your family – consider the length of time you plan to stay outdoors and your activities. Keep an eye out for ingredients like CDC recommended DEET or Picaridin. Other options for families are plant-based ingredients like Lemon Eucalyptus or oil of Geranium.
When entertaining on the deck or patio, consider citronella candles made with real citronella oil – not just a fragrance – that offer up to 40 hours of protection. Create a barrier around your entire home with backyard sprays and foggers, such as Cutter Backyard Bug Control. Visit www.cutterinsectrepellents. com for more information and to find the insect repellent that fits your needs.
Hot Weather Fixes By Georgia Lund Summer brings it’s own brand of fun and foibles. The hot weather that beckons us to come outside play also creates painful thigh rub caused from wearing shorts and having legs rub together when we walk. We get sunburned if we expose our skin to the sun without protection and self-tanner streaks if we try to skip the sun and tan indoors. And our hair frizzes de to humidity to so relegate it to a pony tail or hide it under a hat for most of the summer. Is there a way to fix to these hot weather foibles? Read on and find out. Fix and Prevent Thigh Rub Shorts, sweat and walking cause friction at the point where thigh rub together. Ouch! Thigh rub, chaffing, heat rash, etc., can be quickly fixed by gently cleansing the area, applying baby powder or corn starch and wearing longer shorts or pants for a couple of days until the rash heals. To prevent thigh rub from happening (or reoccurring) generously apply a glycerin based lotion on thighs before donning shorts. Glycerin protects the skin while allowing thighs to glide past each other without friction.
Calm Sunburn Pain Oops! You forgot to apply sunscreen and now your skin’s on fire after a day in the sun. take a couple of aspirin to ease the inflammation and get into the coolest location you can find. Moving to the shade will get you out of the sun, but the heat will encourage the sunburned skin to swell and do even more damage. Move indoors to an air conditioned room to minimize the sunburn damage and pain. Remove Self-Tanner Streaks So your bottled tan looks really good, except for a couple of streaks on the palms of your hands (or some other small location). To remove the self-tanner streaks spritz the streaks with Windex or a similar window cleaner. Wait two minutes and wash with soap and warm water. This fix will remove the streaks , but it will also strip away all the self-tanner color on that area, so be aware you could go from streaked to white-spotted and use this fix sparingly. Tame the Frizz Heat, humidity, chlorinated water and salt water can all the smoothest of hair to frizz. The afore mentioned hot weather foibles cause hair’s cuticle to ruffle and
let moisture escape, leading to a frizzy head of hair. To tame frizz, apply moisturizing conditioner to dry hair and leave in before heading to the pool or beach. Re-apply when hair dries or apply sunscreen to hair. To prevent frizz, give your hair a weekly deep conditioning dur-
ing the summer by combing a moisturizing conditioner into dry hair, then wrapping hair in a warm, damp towel. The warm moisture will create steam and allow the moisturizing conditioner to penetrate hair shaft, smooth cuticles and stop frizz.

FAMILY FEATURES
ntertaining is one thing, but dazzling your guests with an outdoor party sensation is another. Summer can be the best time of year for outdoor parties. From twinkling lights to patterned tablecloths, every detail counts when it comes to impressing family and friends. It may feel like a lot of pressure to live up to expectations, but your party can be both simple and elegant with a few easy tips.
Start early
Early is never early enough when it comes to planning a rock-star summer gathering. Check to see if you have enough utensils, make sure everything is in place and that there is enough food for your guests. Prepare weeks in advance, if possible, to make sure you have all the materials necessary to throw your dream outdoor party.
Spice up the invitations
The perfect invitations can do three things. First is tell the basics: what, when and where. They can also tell guests what to bring along with them. Of course, invitations should also be appealing to the eye. This is your time to get a little creative and catch guests’ attention before the big event.
Show your style
You want your guests to be as comfortable as possible. Make sure to dress tables and chairs with cushions and tablecloths. Mix it up and show off some of your personal flair with bright colors or fancy patterns. It’s easy to celebrate summer with styles that bring summer vibes to life.
Light up the party
Brighten up the big day or night with some candles, lanterns or sparkling lights. In case of wind or weather, try to purchase covered candles to increase the chances the flame will stay lit. Make sure everyone can see the hard work you have put into the party.
Less mess meals
No one likes messy meals, especially at a summer party. Put together a menu that isn’t stressful on the cook or stressful on your guests to eat. Dropping sauce on a white summer top is a party no-no.
Rain, rain, go away
Always prepare for the worst. If clouds roll in on party day, make sure you’re ready. You can simply move the party indoors at the drop of a hat. Tents can also help keep the party going outdoors in case of precipitation.
Brighten it up
It’s finally summer and that usually means flowers everywhere. Pick out an arrangement and make it the focal point of each table. The bright colors can draw your guests in and make them want to appreciate the beautiful nature around them.
Make your own games
Give the kids something to do and make it fun. While the adults visit, the little ones need something to keep themselves busy. Whether it’s bubbles or water play in the heat, something to mix it up can help keep them occupied.
Jam it out
Keep the music low and cool. There is no need to blast your speakers across the entire yard. Play your favorite jams, but nothing too crazy. The music can really set the mood of the entire party and make or break the atmosphere.
Cool it down
The summer heat is blazing and sometimes being outside can be miserable. Make sure your guests stay comfortable, even in the heat. Lay out handheld fans, lots of water and even some towels. Your guests will want to stay hydrated so they can party on. Find more summer party tips at eLivingToday.com.

ith warmer temperatures and sun-filled days arriving, there are few better ways to celebrate the summer season than by firing up the grill. Whether preparing a simple dinner at home or a backyard bash for a crowd, grilling is an easy way to add sear and flavor to your favorite meats and vegetables. The perfect party, regardless of the number of guests, requires proper preparation, attention to detail and a few handy tricks around the grill to serve up delicious options for all in attendance. However, hosting a great get-together doesn’t have to be complicated. To up your grilling game this summer, try these tips from Chef Rick Bayless of Macy’s Culinary Council, a national culinary authority featuring some of the nation’s leading chefs.
Use the Right Tools Aside from fuel, there are several cooking tools that are essential for grilling, including a meat thermometer, long-handled spatula and tongs, grill mitts and a grill brush. Bayless’s go-to gadgets are a basket to prepare whole fish and a cast-iron grill grate to achieve marks and depth of flavor.
Get to Know the Fire When grilling for a party, planning ahead is key, according to Bayless. It can be helpful to know the hot spots of the grill and the distance from grates to flame. Start early if roasting a larger piece of meat, while thinner cuts can be thrown on the grill after the party begins and your guests arrive.
Keep it Simple Bayless recommends a simple menu that features tried and true flavor profiles nearly everyone loves. For appetizers, he suggests grilling vegetables and adding them to guacamole with bacon. Pair with wedges of grilled pita for dipping, which is an unexpected alternative to typical chips. For a main entree, Bayless suggests making meat the star and serving up ribeye steaks marinated in garlic, chilies and fresh lime juice. To cap off the meal, his go-to dessert is grilled cornmeal pound cake, served warm and topped with ice cream, berries or whipped cream. Find more grilling gadgets and helpful cooking videos and tips for your next summer cookout at macys.com.

Missy Froley and Park City Top the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby
Park City and Missy Froley with Dick Widger and Melissa Brandes Photos by McCool Missy Froley and Park City emerged victorious in a class of twenty-two juniors, amateurs, and professionals that competed in the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby, presented by THIS, at the Blenheim Summer Classic. Froley and her six-year-old mount led both rounds with impressive scores of 89 and 87, and finished with an overall total of 176 points to top the field.
The pair had a stellar week, winning every round over fences in the 3’ Green Hunters and the division championship, plus a second in the $1,000 CPHA Green Hunter Incentive class. Their derby victory earned Froley the Blue Ribbon Blankets Winning Training Award and a pair of Roeckl Sports gloves, along with an embroidered cooler and engraved pewter plate. “We recently purchased Park City

at the beginning of this year as a jumper in Europe. He has started out the season competing in the 3’ Green Hunters, and he now competes in the Adult Amateur Hunters with his owner, Lauren Fleming,” Froley said. Froley summed up the experience of winning on the young mount, who is also a good match for the owner. “My favorite part of my job is watching the juniors, amateurs, and young horses alike develop and improve over time. It is very exciting and satisfying to see the riders’ and horses’ hard work pay off.” With an overall score of 173.5, amateur rider David Scapa secured second place and the One K Helmets Highest Placing Amateur Award aboard Dream Catcher. The Plaid Horse Highest Placing Junior Award went to Reeve Sykes and Tonaco. Winner of the Equifit Groom’s Award for the Best Turned Out Horse was Guillermo Flores, who prepared
Ashley Haskin’s dappled grey horse Harvard Grad to perfection. The Las Vegas National will host the final USHJA National Hunter Derby, presented by THIS, of the 2017 Blenheim EquiSports season. Meanwhile, stay tuned for the upcoming CPHA Junior and Amateur Medal Finals and a $30,000 Markel Insurance Grand Prix at the Blenheim Summer Classic. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916)939-0772 or visit this Internet Web http://search.nationwideposting.com/propertySearchTerms.aspx, using the file number assigned to this case CA1700279036 Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. If the sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid. The Purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Mortgagor, the Mortgagee or the Mortgagee’s attorney.
