4 Tips to Stay Fit While Traveling

If summer travel plans frequently keep you away from home, it can be a challenge to maintain your regular fitness routine. With dedication, planning and a little creativity, you can use these tips from fitness entrepreneur Cassey Ho to maintain your workout regimen no matter where your travels take you. 1. Pack for Fitness Before your trip, research the hotel, nearby fitness facilities or area parks and pack accordingly. Be sure to bring along the essentials, such as athletic shoes and exercise clothing; easily portable equipment such as a jump rope, resistance bands or yoga mat; and technology to support your workout like your smartphone and headphones. Like the right apparel, footwear and diet, it is also important to have the right contact lens technology for your eyes. It’s crucial to your performance that you be comfortable throughout the day so you don’t lose focus. “As a fitness trainer, fashion designer and social media entrepreneur, I need a contact lens that’s as high-performing as I am,” Ho said. “Because of their unique water-gradient technology, Alcon DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses are so comfortable that I don’t notice

I’m wearing them, which allows me to focus on my workout, not my eyes.” Beyond all-day comfort, daily disposable contact lenses can be a healthy option for your eyes, are easy to use and take up less space when traveling because you don’t need to pack bulky lens care solution and cases. Learn more at dailiestotal1. com. 2. Keep Active as You Go Whether you’re traveling by car, train or plane, summer travel can force you to sit for long periods. To fit some activity into your travel, wear your walking or running shoes. If you’re traveling by plane, stroll through the airport terminal rather than sitting at the gate if you have a layover or delay. When traveling by train walk through the cars occasionally. If you’re driving, take breaks to get out and stretch. 3. Work in a Workout When you arrive at your destination, set the tone for your trip by working out right away or scheduling time for a workout and treating it as an important appointment. Consider these simple ways to squeeze in some physical activity: Go for a quick run in the area near your hotel – it’s a great way to burn calories, and it’s the perfect opportunity

to explore your destination! Walk the hotel halls – or get your daily steps logged at a local attraction or meeting facility. Take the stairs when possible and use your phone’s GPS to map out a path or find a local park or trail. For a quick burst of cardio, power through a few sets of jumping jacks in your room. If you’ve got space in your hotel room, use your tablet or smartphone to find a yoga or aerobics workout and follow along. Try pushups, planks and squats, all of which rely on your own body mass for resistance. Swim laps in the hotel pool.

4. Make Healthy Dining Choices When dining out, make sensible choices. Take the time to evaluate the menu. Select foods that are steamed, roasted or broiled, and avoid fried foods. Ask for dressings and sauces on the side. If you’ll be in town for more than a day or two, take time to visit a local grocery store to stock up on fresh, healthy snacks, such as fruit, vegetables, hummus and unsalted nuts, for your hotel room. Keeping things simple and staying committed to your routine with these tips will help you to easily keep your health on track during your summer travels.

Legal Advertising: The Coto de Caza News was adjudicated by the Orange County Superior Court as a newspaper of general circulation pursuant to Government Code 6000 case #A178404 on August 29, 1995 and as such is the appropriate newspaper to place legal and public notices for the South Orange County Judicial District.

County elections officials and the Secretary of State’s office have received over 100 complaints from voters who have received letters from a group called the Voter Participation Center. The organization’s letters claim that the voter is not registered to vote and offers a pre-filled voter registration form that has incorrect or outdated information or information for persons who don’t live at the address. In many instances, the voter is in fact properly registered to vote. It is important that organizations

conducting voter registration drives through the mail ensure that their voter data is up-to-date and accurate. Causing confusion right before an election is wrong. “If you have questions about your voter registration status, check directly with your county elections office,” Secretary of State Padilla said. “Many counties have online tools that allow voters to verify their voter registration information. Also, contact information for county elections officials and links to county

online voter registration status tools is available on the Secretary of State’s website at: http://www.sos.ca.gov/ elections/registration-status/. ” New voters or persons who want to update their voter registration information can visit the Secretary of State’s official voter registration website: http://registertovote.ca.gov/. If you need to update your voter registration information, the deadline is October 24.

By all these lovely tokens September days are here, with summer’s best of weather and autumn’s best of cheer. ~ Helen Hunt Jackson

Eagles, Green, Ground and Pound Game Too Much for Alemany

Behind 293 rushing yards, the Eagles were able to overpower the Warriors of Alemany by a score of 48-31

BY: Sean Zeitler Led by Santa Margarita senior running back Trey Green, the Eagles managed 293 rushing yards, 242 of which went to Green, including 163 first half rushing yards. The Warriors had a good counter attack of their own in senior running back Cayden Dunn, who rushed for 129 yards and a touchdown of 78-yards. the Eagles (2-1) and the Warriors (1-2) needed very little passing and got a whole lot of rushing instead. The Eagles defense kept sophomore Alemany quarterback Tripp Mitchell to just eight of 23 passing (35%) for 148 yards and a touchdown. Of those 148, 49 yards came on one play that resulted in a touchdown by Johnny Edwards. For the Eagles, Richard Wagner was 15 of 23 (65%) for 184 yards and two touchdowns. On the receiving end of those touchdowns were Munir McClain, whose lone catch was for 31 yards and Grant Calcaterra, who finished his night with five catches, 44 yards and a score. Junior Chad Magyar had another impressive and reliable evening, rushing the ball six times for 44 yards and a touchdown. Magyar also proved to be crucial in the receiving game, catching four passes for 69 yards to account for 113 total yards. Joining the century club for all-purpose yards was junior Malone Mataele, who had 14 receiving yards, 99 kickoff return yards, and 54 punt return yards to round out his night with 167 total yards. Despite trailing 28-27 going into halftime, the Eagles made the

necessary adjustments in the second half as they outscored Alemany 21-3 to close out the game. As impressive as their 477 total yards of offense was, the Eagles had only 35 penalty yards compared to Alemany’s 146 penalty yards. On the defensive side of the ball, junior linebacker’s Caden Fitch, Sean Toohey and senior safety Brennan Gibbons accounted for 23 of the teams 57 tackles on the night. A busy night for the right leg of kicker Dylan Brady, who finished up a perfect six for six on Points After Touchdowns’ and two for two on field goals, including a 44-yard field goal and another one that reached the scoreboard and took out a bank of lights on the clock. Unlike the 1984 movie classic, The Natural, no sparks flew. The Eagles finished their night with 72 plays, 21 first downs, and seven penalties for 35 yards. Alemany managed 68 plays, 15 first downs, and a staggering 23 penalties for 146 yards. The Eagles are back at home tonight as they play host to another Warrior team in Westlake High School (1-2) at 7:00pm at Saddleback College. Westlake is coming off back to back losses to Aleda High School of Texas, 65-7, and Newbury Park, 4340. Their lone win of the season came in week zero to Oxnard High School by a score of 38-24. Westlake is averaging 92.7 rushing yards, 245.3 passing yards and 28.3 points per game. The Eagles are now averaging 180.7 rushing yards, 248.3 passing yards, and 35.3 points per game.

Ic e d T e a : A N e w Ta k e o n a n Am e r i c a n T r a d i t i o n As temperatures rise this summer, Americans will turn to their favorite ways to stay cool: air conditioning, beach days and, of course, iced tea. Historians believe iced tea gained its place in American culture at the World’s Fair in St. Louis in 1904 where a tea plantation owner was attempting to serve his hot tea to fairgoers. When he saw that overheated fairgoers had no interest in the beverage, he cooled the tea using frozen lead pipes to offer an alternative option. The iced tea was a hit, and an American tradition was born. More than 100 years later, Americans are still enjoying iced tea. In 2010, Americans consumed more than 65 billion servings of tea, according to the Tea Council of the USA. Of that, approximately 85 percent of tea is iced. Today iced tea can be found bottled or fresh brewed in a variety of flavors – from pomegranate to watermelon and beyond. And sweetened or unsweetened isn’t the only way it’s served. Try it on the rocks. “Iced tea cocktails and mocktails, like Citrus Iced Tea Punch, offer a new take on tea,” said John Cheetham, a tea master for Lipton® who noted the brand recently launched a new 100% natural line of bottled iced tea. “We Page 10

pride ourselves in tea innovation and we love to see our fans get creative with iced tea.” For a twist on traditional iced tea, Cheetham recommends mixing 100% Natural Lipton Iced Tea with fresh summertime ingredients like mint, coconut or orange juice. With a variety of flavors, such as favorites Green Tea with Citrus, Iced Tea with Lemon, or new flavors Iced Tea with Blueberry Pomegranate and Green Tea with Passionfruit Mango, the possibilities are endless. Lipton Iced Tea also recently introduced Diet Green Teas in Watermelon and Citrus flavors. Getting thirsty? Try Lipton Iced Tea’s Citrus Iced Tea Punch recipe. For additional recipes, visit www. Facebook.com/LiptonIcedTea. Citrus Iced Tea Punch Prep Time: 10 minutes 6 servings 2 bottles 100% Natural Lipton Iced Tea with Lemon 1 cup orange juice 1 lemon, sliced 1 lime, sliced Combine tea with orange juice in large pitcher; stir in sliced fruit. Serve in ice-filled glasses. Garnish, if desired, with fresh mint. Tip: To transform from mocktail to cocktail just add tequila or rum. (BPT)

16th annual dove dash 5k in dove canyon on October 2

ANNOUNCEMENT!! The 16th Annual Dove Dash 5K, 10K & Pancake Breakfast will be held in the picturesque gated community of Dove Canyon on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2. The start of the races is at 8AM after a glorious release of 40 white doves. Once you run or walk the race, enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast provided by Albertson’s/Vons which is included in the price of entry. Both the 5K and 10K start at the corner of Sycamore Cyn & Dove Cyn Dr, just inside the gates of Dove Canyon. The 10K follows the same path as the 5K both winding onto the championship golf course with lush canyons and waterfalls where they eventually split into two separate race routes. The finish line is just in front of the Golf Club. Families, friends, co-workers and even neighborhoods form teams to support this fundraiser. Not a runner? Not a problem. Many choose to walk the Dash, bring their kids in strollers and dogs on a leash (5K only) or come cheer on a friend. Visit vendor booths while listening to music and enjoying a pancake breakfast. Over 20 raffle prizes go home with lucky winners.

The kids zone for ages 7 and under will be located in front of the Golf Club by the vendor area. We will have a separate location provided at the breakfast area for dogs. Water will be provided on the course for your dog. Singer Pat Boone is the host of the event. Co-hosting will be Chip and Kim McAllister, season 5 winners of the Amazing Race. Come say hello if you happen to be fans. It’s not a coincidence that Mr. Boone supports this event. The Dove Dash benefits Ryan’s Reach, a foundation started after Boone’s eldest grandson Ryan incurred a traumatic brain injury when he fell three stories in 2001. The Boone family has brought awareness to the struggles that families have after such a catastrophic injury to a loved one. The funds that are raised by the Dove Dash are used to provide scholarships for TBI survivors to attend High Hopes Head Injury Program in Tustin, who otherwise would not have the ability to keep their recovery journey going. None of the proceeds go to Ryan Corbin. Yo u c a n r e g i s t e r a t w w w. ryansreach.com.

Three Remarkable OC Women honored at gala business event Photos by Ann Chatillon For the twentieth year, the National Association of Women Business Owners Orange County (NAWBO-OC), a premier organization for Orange County women business owners held The 2016 Remarkable Women Awards at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Santa Ana-Orange County Airport. NAWBO honored three remarkable business women, who have demonstrated success, leadership and passion in their chosen fields to a crowd of more than 400 guests. Three businesswomen recognized at the dinner awards ceremony were Deborah Dickson, Cynthia Flynn and Loreen Gilbert. Dickson was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award presented to her by Congresswoman Mimi Walters. Dickson is founder and president of Smith Dickson, a CPA firm specializing in financial statements, tax work, and consulting and litigation services. Flynn, a practicing attorney in her own practice, Hackler Flynn & Associates was awarded Entrepreneur to Watch and the keynote speaker Michael E. Gerber introduced her. Business Owner of the Year went to Gilbert, founder of Wealth Wise Financial Services a firm offering securities and investment advice to individuals and businesses. She was introduced by Henry Walker of F&M Bank – who is another great NAWBO supporter. Michelle Beauchamp received the Member of the Year from NAWBO, very fitting as Beauchamp has been a force in the organization since she first joined ten years ago. There was also a tribute to all of the Remarkable Women Honorees from the past 19 years on stage by NAWBO-OC President Penny Fox and gala event chair Marni Smith. Gerber, a true legend of entrepreneurship, served as a Keynote Speaker. Inc. Magazine
calls him “the World’s #1 Small Business Guru” – the entrepreneurial and small business thought leader who has impacted the lives of millions of individuals and hundreds of thousands of companies worldwide for over 40 years. When asked about his relationship with NAWBO-OC, Gerber said, “I was extremely thrilled and honored to help support an organization with such successful business women. They exemplify the true core of an entrepreneurial spirit and serve as role models to young women everywhere.” NAWBO-OC Event Chair Marni Smith stated, “I decided to join NAWBOOC after attending the “Remarkable Women Awards” Gala over two years ago, and I could not be more proud to be part of this organization or more honored and excited to be the chair of the 2015-16 event. This is the 20th anniversary of the “Remarkable Women Awards,” and it was a historical event for NAWBO-OC.” Debbie Dickson said, “The ballroom was beautiful, actually stunning! The program was well put together and executed flawlessly. The timing was excellent. The speakers were interesting. I was proud of each participant and grateful to share in such a glorious evening.” Since 1996, NAWBO-OC’s Remarkable Women Awards has recognized local businesswomen, women business owners, and women entrepreneurs who have dared to step out, follow their dreams, and inspire others by their commitment to what is possible. NAWBOOC is dedicated to providing business and professional development, informational resources, educational programs and workshops, networking and strategic relationships for nearly 200 members. This association is committed to empowering, encouraging and developing women-owned businesses by positioning its members for profits, power and the passionate pursuit of excellence. Weeknight meals made easy with simple tips

What’s for dinner? It’s a question most of us ask every day. With evening routines packed full of extracurricular activities, chores and preparation for the following day, we don’t always have as much time as we’d like to make dinner. Fortunately, a quick, delicious and healthy meal can still be an option for your family, even when you’re short on time. All it takes is a little planning, some common ingredients and one trip to the grocery store. Here are five dinners to take you through an entire work week: Monday Start the week by putting your slow cooker to work for you. Slice off the tops of four to six bell peppers, but don’t throw them out. Remove the seeds and stuff each pepper with a combination of lean ground turkey or chicken sausage, grated cauliflower, carrots, onion and garlic, plus fresh herbs, salt and pepper. Put the pepper tops back on, arrange the peppers securely in a slow cooker, pour a large can of low-sodium chopped tomatoes over them and cook on low for eight hours. Dinner will be ready when you walk in the door. Tuesday Soup can be a quick way to have dinner on the table in minutes - and it allows you to use up vegetables that may be near the end of their shelf life. Try a Broccoli Cheese Soup

(recipe follows), a classic favorite that the whole family will enjoy. There’s minimal pre-cooking required - simply steam the broccoli, measure the remaining ingredients, put them in your Vitamix Professional Series 500 blender and start the Hot Soup program. When the program completes, pour into bowls and garnish with extra steamed broccoli florets and bit of grated cheese. For a heartier meal, chop and add grilled chicken chunks. Serve with crusty bread and a salad for a complete dinner. Wednesday Whole-wheat pasta with basil walnut pesto is a crowd pleaser. Take fresh basil, Parmesan cheese and walnuts and puree with garlic, olive oil and lemon juice in your Vitamix for a quick and easy sauce. If there are stuffed pepper leftovers, chop and heat for a tasty pasta topping. Make a large batch of pesto and you can use the leftover portion later in the week. Thursday Throw together a chicken stir-fry for another quick weeknight meal. Chop up your favorite vegetables, including extra cauliflower, onions and carrots from Monday’s stuffed peppers and broccoli from Tuesday’s soup. Saute the vegetables with cooked, cubed chicken and a mix of soy and teriyaki sauces. Serve over rice and offer a spicy chili sauce for those who like it hot.

Friday You’ve made it through the week. Why not treat your family to pizza? Top a ready-made, whole-wheat pizza crust with your leftover pesto sauce, cheese and any toppings you’d like. Add peppers, mushrooms and vegetables you chopped for the soup and stir-fry to create a veggie delight. Follow the cooking instructions on the pizza crust package, and you’ll be ready to kick off your weekend in no time. With a bit of planning, you can shop once and have your dinners set for the week. Buy canned or frozen fruits and vegetables in bulk and try to prepare at least two meals using the same ingredients. Even with hectic schedules, families can prepare and sit down to a satisfying meal every

night of the week. Broccoli cheese soup Yields two cups. Ingredients: 1 cup (240 ml) milk, skim or low fat 1⁄3 cup (40 g) shredded, low fat cheddar cheese| 1 cup (100 g) chopped fresh or frozen broccoli or cauliflower florets, steamed 1 teaspoon diced onion 1 teaspoon cornstarch 1⁄4 teaspoon chicken or vegetable bouillon or soup base Directions: Place all ingredients into the Vitamix container in the order listed and secure lid. Select Hot Soup program. Press Start. Allow machine to complete programmed cycle. - (BPT)

Smart, safe storage and organization for back to school

A little organization goes a long way. Not only can it lead to career success and personal productivity, but as students head back to class this fall, it can also provide health benefits and increase student security. Security in schools is a major concern for Americans, with 60 percent of respondents in a recent nationwide survey of 1,000 U.S. adults stating that they worry about the security of their children’s belongings in a school setting. “Implementing smart storage and organization habits now will position students for a successful school year,” says Rebecca Smith, vice president of marketing for Master Lock. “Not only can you relieve some of the stress of worrying about your kids losing important homework assignments or having their valuables stolen at school, but you will have more free time to enjoy together.”Follow these tips for a smooth transition into the new school year. 1. Mix and fix your routine Sit down with your family and evaluate your daily routines to ensure they are organized and effective. Identify aspects that no longer work and discuss ways they can be adjusted. If getting the kids fed and out the door in the morning is your biggest challenge, do as much as you

can in the evenings to prepare for the next day. Lay out clothes in advance, cook and freeze breakfast options that can be easily thawed and served while you attend to other items. If organization is more of an afternoon struggle, create checklists that outline household chores, homework and other responsibilities to keep kids on track after school. 2. Be involved Keeping the family organized and safe begins and ends with regular communication and parent involvement. Carve out a time at night to not only get kids started with homework, but to be available for questions, look through their backpacks and ask them to review their day so you are up-to-date with their regular activities. Discuss their security routines by reminding them to lock up belongings while at school and to lock the door when they return home afterwards. 3. File everything “A place for everything and everything in its place.” In keeping with this famous and wise phrase, create a filing system that organizes everything from administrative documents and report cards to study guides, test scores and great achievements. Keeping all these items in a secure, central location will make it easy for you and your children

to access important information, such as school records and contact information. Schedule time every few months to go through the documents to discard unnecessary items and ensure that your system remains as organized as possible. Consider a cloud-based digital organization and storage app and website such as the Master Lock Vault for access to important information on-the-go. Storing documents and other private data online is not only convenient, it also eliminates the risk of losing hard copies of key items. 4. Keep backpacks light and secure A child’s backpack should weigh no more than 10 to 20 percent of his or her total body weight, UMass Memorial Medical Center pediatrician Dr. Safdar Medina said during a recent interview posted on Worcester.com. When worn improperly or packed with too many heavy items, backpacks can cause pain, restrict circulation and can lead to posture problems. To keep backpacks light, ensure your children have secure locks for school and gym lockers so they are comfortable storing books and other valuables in these places while at class. Use folders or lightweight expanding files to store homework in one place and eliminate carrying heavier materials like plastic binders. Designate a

backpack docking station near your home’s entryway to encourage kids to unpack and leave them rather than carry them around the home. Finally, don’t forget to provide a lightweight backpack lock to deter pickpockets and keep valuables secure. 5. Create a homework hub Do your kids work best in the kitchen, living room or an alternative location? Identify an area where they can concentrate well and outfit it with any supplies or items they might need for various assignments. Use creative storage solutions such as a shoe organizer for art supplies or mason jars to hold pens, pencils, scissors and more. Having all the tools necessary to complete a given project in one area will limit distractions and time wasted attempting to locate that missing calculator. The best kind of home improvements: high-impact, low-maintenance

Yes, everyone knows making home improvements is a worthy investment in your greatest material asset. Sure you want every improvement job done well with top-notch end results. But when all is said and done, do you really want to have to put a lot of effort and money into maintaining those improvements? For most people - whether they’ll admit it or not - the answer is “no.” The best home improvements are the ones that not only enhance your home’s value and livability, but also require little work from you afterward to keep them looking great and functioning well. If you’re looking for high-impact, low-maintenance home improvements, consider these popular projects: No-leak skylights When it comes to an improvement that brightens your home, enhances its indoor air quality and boosts energy-efficiency, skylights deliver. Unfortunately, early skylights had a reputation for being leaky - a problem that simply doesn’t occur with modern, no leak, energyefficient skylights like those made by Velux America. Pre-engineered flashing kits (the metal shield that surrounds any opening in a wall or roof) work with all types of roofs, from shingles to metal, to ensure a Page 24

properly installed skylight won’t leak. Need further low-maintenance points to make the case for adding a skylight? Not only do modern skylights keep water out, they’re energy efficient as well. Energy Star-qualified, no leak solar-powered fresh air skylights, like those from Velux, deliver fresh air through costeffective passive ventilation. Adding remote-controlled, solar-powered blinds allows you to easily open or close a fresh air skylight and shade it when the sun hits that part of the roof, boosting the skylight’s energy efficiency by 39 percent. Keep the shade open during cold weather to admit warmth and reduce heating costs. A 30 percent federal tax credit on both products and installation costs makes a skylight project even more appealing. Visit www.veluxusa. com for a tax calculator to show your savings for a new installation or replacement skylights and a skylight planner app to show exactly how skylights and blinds will look in any area of your home. Lighting upgrade Older light fixtures not only look dated, they often use outdated, inefficient bulbs and are lacking in the energy-efficient emphasis that comes with newer fixtures. Upgrading lighting throughout your

The Coto de Caza News

home is a great way to ensure you won’t have to think about it again any time soon. If a total lighting redesign is out of the question, you can still make your existing light fixtures lower maintenance simply by swapping out old, inefficient incandescent light bulbs with newer, electricity-sipping versions. Options like CFLs and LEDs provide all the light of incandescents while using a fraction of the energy. Energy.gov says Energy Star-rated LEDs use at least 75 percent less power than incandescent bulbs, and last 25 times longer. Imagine the time, hassle and money you’ll save not having to replace bulbs constantly - especially in lights that get a lot of use, like porch lights, or that are hard to reach, like the chandelier in your two-story entryway. Vinyl siding Wood, fiber cement, stucco, brick - there are nearly as many types of exterior siding as there are colors to paint it. When it comes to low- or no-maintenance siding, vinyl remains the gold standard. In fact, more new homes are built using vinyl siding than any other type of siding product, according to the Vinyl Siding Institute. While early versions of vinyl siding introduced in the 1950s earned

criticism for being less lovely than wood, even those less sophisticated versions had staying power; it’s possible to find homes in use today sporting vinyl siding that was added to the house in the 1970s or even earlier. Vinyl siding never needs to be painted, and when properly installed provides exceptional shielding from the elements. New technology has made modern vinyl siding look better and last longer without fading issues associated with older versions of vinyl. It requires basic cleaning, and overall maintenance demands are much less than other types of siding. Visit www.vinylsiding.org to learn more. - (BPT)

Top 5 super foods with a powerful health impact The term appears on headlines and is splashed on food labels everywhere -”super foods” get people talking. But what really is a super food, and how do you cut through confusion to find the foods that truly have a powerful impact on your health and wellness? “What are super foods? They are foods that have a very high or dense nutrient profile,” says Sophie Uliano, New York Times best-selling author, passionate environmentalist and healthy living advocate. “Some super foods come from countries such as South America, in which case, it’s important to make sure they are sustainably harvested and fair trade. Other super foods can be found in your local grocery store.” Some of the most powerful super foods may surprise you. Uliano’s list of top super foods that pack a big serving of healthy goodness include: 1. Goji berries: Recommended frequency: every day. These little berries are a very rich source of antioxidants: flavonoids, polyphenols and carotenoids. They also contain vitamins C, E and A. They have a whopping amount of vitamin C - better than 500 times more than an orange. In addition, these tasty berries contain 19 amino acids, including

eight essential amino acids. They are also anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. “These berries are great for our long-term health. They have anti-aging benefits and help boost your immune system,” says Uliano. “I recommend eating them in the same way as you would cranberries or raisins. You can add them to smoothies, oatmeal, granola, or even to make a salad a little more interesting.” 2. Sardines: Recommended frequency: one can a week. If you’ve always avoided sardines, their nutritional profile should change your mind. Sardines contain B vitamins, phosphorus, potassium and iron. They are particularly rich in the heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which are also important for their antiinflammatory effects. “Canned sardines are just as healthy and rich in nutrients as fresh sardines,” Uliano says. “If you dislike the taste and texture, try mashing them up with spicy mayo and eating as you would tuna salad. If you’re still not sold, consider a high quality fish oil supplement from Nordic Naturals, which will give you a boost of the omega-3s your body needs to stay healthy and prevent disease.”

3. Kale: Recommended frequency: every day. In addition to vitamin K, which is important for blood-clotting and healthy bones, kale is packed with vitamins A, C and E, calcium and fiber. The veggie also contains loads of carotenoids, which are great for eye health. “Different kinds of kale include Curly Kale, Dino Kale, Premier Kale and Redbar Kale,” explains Uliano. “I love to steam kale and drizzle with olive or toasted sesame oil and a little tamari sauce. I eat it warm or as a cold side in the summer. It’s also great to eat raw, but make sure that you wash well and remove all of the tough stems before chopping it up.” 4. Coconut oil: Recommended frequency: 1 to 3 tablespoons per day Raw virgin coconut oil has a plethora of health benefits. It must, however, be raw, not hydrogenated. The lauric acid in coconut oil has been found to increase metabolism as well as fight bacteria and viruses. Coconut oil also has been shown to help lower cholesterol, stimulate the thyroid and is good for the brain. “At room temperature, coconut oil will solidify, and when it’s heated, it will liquefy,” Uliano says. “My favorite

ways to eat coconut oil include adding a tablespoon to smoothies or oatmeal, and using it in place of butter when baking. Coconut oil has a very high smoke point, so it is great for frying pancakes, or deep frying, too.” 5. Maca: Recommended frequency: every day. Typically from Peru, maca is usually sold as a nutty powder, but it also comes in capsules. “It is an adaptogen, which means that it is a biological substance found in a plant, which helps the human body adapt to change and stress,” says Uliano. “It has been used for more than 3,000 years in South America, and is also thought to be a libido enhancer.” Perfect for vegans, maca is also a rich source of vitamin B12, minerals, protein and amino acids. “I like to bake with it or use it in smoothies. I add one heaping tablespoon of maca to my smoothie daily,” notes Uliano.-BPT

Dress for success: tips for building a professional wardrobe Whether you are a recent grad or someone re-entering a professional work environment, building a work wardrobe that strikes a balance between professionalism and personal style is key. “Dress for the job you want, not the job you’re being hired for,” says Stephanie Thomas, fashion instructor at The Art Institute of California - Los Angeles, a campus of Argosy University. “Your job description, and that of the next step up your career ladder, should be the driving force behind your apparel purchases,” adds Stephanie Pierotti, fashion instructor at The Arts Institute of Las Vegas. To get you started, fashion experts from The Art Institutes system of schools offer tips to have you dressing for the corner office. Suit up “I know it sounds boring, but a suit is an absolute must,” says Thomas. “Look upon your suit purchase as a long term investment,” adds Pierotti. “This is not an area where you’ll want to skimp. Seasonless fabrics, like lightweight wool, worsted wool and wool crepe are your best bets.” She recommends purchasing a suit in a classic color such as black, gray, tan or navy blue and saving the more trendy colors and patterns for your accessories.

Thomas says to also think about the colors in your current wardrobe and look for a suit that can be interchangeable with pieces you already own. For women, a suit with both pants and a skirt will offer more variety. You should also feel comfortable in your suit. A good fit will make you look polished, professional and more confident. “The chances of you finding a suit that fits you perfectly off the rack is slim to none, so be sure to budget some funds for tailoring,” says Thomas. Wardrobe building blocks You will also need some staples that will serve as wardrobe building blocks that enable you to walk right into a new job. “Women should purchase two or three button-down shirts of a good fit and quality. Men may want to purchase five, if buttondowns are a staple in their field,” says Pierotti. For women, a wrap dress is a great alternative to pants and a button down. Women can also incorporate knit shirts that will mix and match with their suit separates. For men, a sports jacket in an allweather fabric is a good investment. “Think less trend, more modern classic that will cut across many seasons,” says Thomas. “Men and women need a great blazer and some type of sweater they can dress up or down.” Both men and women

can mix in sweaters and cardigans to go with their separates. Pierotti advises, “Look for versatile items that can take you from desk to dinner and from workdays to weekends. Also consider a dark or black jean for casual days at the office. Shoes To put your best foot forward at a new job, make sure you also have professional footwear to go with your new wardrobe. Pierotti recommends two pairs of practical shoes for dayto-day work life and one or two for more formal events, in neutral colors such as brown, gray and black. And for women, 4 inches should be the maximum height for a professional setting. Accessories Don’t forget about accessories, which can add personality to your outfits. “Men should have a couple of ties with a little bit of personality, meaning different patterns or maybe a bold color,” says Thomas. For women, necklaces and bracelets can add a pop to an outfit, but less is more when considering jewelry. Make sure you don’t forget to use an appropriate purse or messenger bag and no matter where you live, you should have a professional trench in your wardrobe. Tailoring and maintenance Once you’ve built your wardrobe,

you’ll want to keep it neat and polished. To make you clothing look custom made, find a good tailor who can make small tweaks to your garments. A garment steamer, a clothes shaver, stain remover sticks and fabric freshener sprays will help save on dry cleaning costs, by helping your garments looking and smelling fresh. “Investing in core pieces lays a solid foundation for your new professional wardrobe,” says Pierotti. “You’ll create a classic yet stylish work collection that makes you feel confident and professional.” -BPT

PACIFIC SYMPHONY POPS 2016-17 SEASON BURSTS ONTO THE SCENE WITH THE MULTI-TALENTED, AMERICA’S SWEETHEART, AMY GRANT! Photo by: Cheryl Anteau and Debra Akins Pacific Symphony’s Pops season undergoes a mighty launch with a stupendous opening night featuring six-time Grammy Award winner Amy Grant. This American-music icon has enjoyed a career spanning more than 30 years, stretching from her roots in gospel music to leading pop star, songwriter, television personality and philanthropist. Known as “America’s Sweetheart” and admired for her crossover music—from contemporary Christian to mainstream—Grant has produced numerous hits such as “Baby Baby,” “Every Heartbeat,” “That’s What Love is For,” “I Will Remember You,” “Lead Me On,” “El Shaddai” and more. She now brings her soothing voice, engaging personality and talent for erasing the lines between genres to the Symphony for a perfect night out that includes an exciting mix of music from her latest musical endeavors to her greatest hits. Led by Principal Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman, Pops opening weekend opens with a first half dedicated to music by the incomparable Henry Mancini, including some of his greatest hits, “Pink Panther,” “Charade,” “Moon River” and “Peter Gunn.” The concert takes place on Oct. 14-15, at 8 p.m., in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Tickets are $35-$167, ($195 Box Circle). For more information or to purchase tickets call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org. “Amy Grant is not only a terrific singer, but she also brings a special spirit to the stage that makes the audience feel right at home,” says Maestro Kaufman. “Her talents are known around the world, but she is one of the most humble and welcoming people

Page 26

who ever stood on a stage. Amy’s style is part of the American musical ‘fabric.’ The Christmas shows we did together a couple of years ago were such a treat and truly memorable— we’re so glad she’s back! She is the perfect person to take center stage on our opening Pops weekend.” Grant last left Orange County audiences wanting more in December 2013, when she made her debut performance with Pacific Symphony and wowed all with her warm, uplifting holiday concert. Her artistry has resonated with audiences since she first hit the national spotlight a few decades ago as a fresh-faced teen with a guitar. She became the first artist in Christian music to have a platinum record and went on to become a crossover sensation. To date, Grant has earned three multi-platinum albums, six additional platinum albums and four gold albums. She has scored 10 Top 40 pop singles and 17 Top 40 adult contemporary tracks, as well as a string of contemporary Christian chart-toppers. She’s received six Grammy Awards, numerous Dove Awards and has had a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame since 2006. According to the singer herself, she has built her long, successful career on music that “matters.” Ever since she burst on the scene to bring contemporary Christian music to the forefront of American culture, the Nashville native gained a reputation for creating potent songs that examine life’s complexities with an open heart and keen eye, allowing her musical gifts that transcend genre boundaries to make her a household name. Embracing both the triumphs and challenges of her life, Grant has distilled them to their essence and poured the lessons learned into

The Coto de Caza News

Amy Grant songs, which ache with honesty and reverberate with gentle wisdom. The songs she’s written, especially in latter years, represent a season of growth for her, yet as personal as they are, they are also universal—examining and reflecting on love, loss, death and the passing of time. Some of her more recent tunes deliver a sense of anticipation and optimism, while others lean into life’s most challenging moments. “At some point in life you realize that some things really matter and some things don’t,” Grant says. “Living matters. Celebrating life matters. Seeing the value in hard times matters; relationships and people matter; faith matters. I feel like that’s where my head has been… I feel this is a very positive…life affirming. Life prepares us for the journey. You don’t know what’s ahead and that is one of the great things about getting older in a framework of faith. Faith is the one thing that stands the test of time.” And it’s all something she puts to music incredibly well. While Grant performs on the second half of the Symphony’s program, the

concert opens with a tribute to Henry Mancini, one of the most successful composer-arranger-conductors of our time. In a career that spanned 40 years, writing for film and television, Mancini received 72 Grammy nominations and 13 Oscar nominations, and he won 20 Grammy Awards and three Academy Awards—the all-time record for a pop artist. For the 1961 movie, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” alone, Mancini won five Grammys and two Oscars. “Our first half will shine the spotlight on a musical legend—Henry Mancini—who is considered an American musical treasure,” says Kaufman. “This opening concert of our Pops season has always been a special time to feature the magnificent talents of our Pacific Symphony musicians,” he adds. “The music of Mancini provides the perfect opportunity for our audience to hear these superb artists as they bring such beloved music to life. Each Pops weekend is truly a celebration, and I look forward to sharing the excitement with our fantastic Pops audiences!”

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 888-988-6736 or visit this internet Web site www.salestrack.tdsf.com, using the file number assigned to this case 0125001671. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The property offered for sale excludes all funds held on account by the property receiver, if applicable. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call Auction. com at 800.280.2832 for information regarding the Trustee’s Sale or visit the Internet Web site address www.Auction.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, CA08003861-15-1. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
