Hubbard Street Dance Chicago: 40th Anniversary Tour AT IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE September 21-24 Kicking off the 40th Anniversary, the Fall Series, September 21-24 features an immersive and interactive dance installation choreographed by Peter Chu, So You Think You Can Dance guest choreographer and Artistic Director of chuthis, covering all spaces of the Harris Theater. Incorporating original music by former Music Director for Cirque Du Soleil, Jean-Francois (DJeff) Houle, video projections by Sven Ortel, and lighting by Marcus Doshi, as well as the addition of 15 dancers from the Hubbard Street Professional Program, this performance — the first of its kind in Hubbard Street’s four decade history — re-invents the audience experience through moving imagery and changing perspectives. First presented by the Barclay nearly 27 years ago under the auspices of its founding artistic director, Lou Conte, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago has become one of America’s most influential contemporary dance companies. The company is known now for its eclectic, international repertory and for its impeccable dancers. In celebration of the company’s 40th anniversary, Glenn Edgerton, the current artistic director and company visionary, will curate a special program including works from choreographers such as William Forsythe, Robyn Mineko Williams and Nacho Duato Since opening its doors in 1990, Irvine Barclay Theatre has emerged as one of California’s most imaginative performing arts showcases. A unique collaborative venture among the City of Irvine,
the University of California, Irvine, and the private sector, the theatre has a reputation for wide-ranging programming in the fields of contemporary dance, music, and theater arts. Performances take place in the 750-seat “jewel box” theatre which is renowned for its intimate atmosphere and superb acoustics. Irvine Barclay Theatre is an independent nonprofit organization established as an innovative public-private partnership with the vision of creating a unique performing arts venue. The private sector, the City of Irvine and the University of California, Irvine - combined funding and land to achieve a long-standing mutual goal. The partners created Irvine Barclay Theatre to showcase top quality artists, to provide a superior facility for local and regional arts groups, and to enhance UCI’s educational mission, particularly the programs generated by its School of the Arts. The theatre building is named for Mr. Richard Barclay, an area philanthropist, who provided the leading gift for the theatre’s construction. The theatre auditorium is named for Dr. George and Arlene Cheng, also area philanthropists. Irvine Barclay Theatre has gained a national reputation for its great acoustics, intimate feel, and the high quality of its production facilities. Among artists, it is a venue of choice when performing in southern California. To buy tickets, Box Office: (949) 854-4646 x1 tickets@thebarclay.org. Singer-Songwriter Jack Tempchin Performs at Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club By Judy Lesko Only a few songs embody the folk-rock-country energy of the early Eagles as sublimely as desert ballad “Peaceful, Easy Feeling”. First performed on their 1972 debut album by then lead vocalist Glenn Frey, the song still elicits collective sighs of resonance from multi-generational concertgoers in the U.S., and beyond. It’s likely, however, that you’ve never heard the name of the person who wrote the song, unless you’re totally entrenched in the late 1970s and early 1980s Southern California music scene, or a fan of the late Glenn Fry and the Eagles. But doubtless you’ve heard some of Jack Tempchin’s other songs, as well: “Already Gone” for the Eagles; “Slow Dancing Swayin’ to the Music” for Johnny Rivers; “You Belong to the City” and “Smuggler’s Blues” for the “Miami Vice” TV soundtrack, and “The One You Love” and “I Found Somebody” for the late Glenn Fry, among many other hits Tempchin either wrote or co-wrote. His newest album “Peaceful Easy Feeling – The Songs of Jack Tempchin”, was released several weeks ago on Blue Elan Records, an “artist-friendly” label whose noteworthy roster also boasts twotime Grammy winner Rita Coolidge and songwriter Gerry Beckley, founding-member of the folk-rock band America. Tempchin’s album pays tribute to his Eagles writing partner and longtime friend, Glenn Fry, who passed away in January 2016. The album features Tempchin’s versions of a dozen of his more popular tracks and a previously unreleased Tempchin-
Jack Tempchin Fry collaboration titled “Privacy”, written more than a decade ago before what the lyrics refer to as “the eye in the sky that knows when you’re high” prevailed. A self-described “hippie” in his early life, Tempchin likes to joke about his path to co-writing Eagles hits with Glenn Fry: “Become friends with some very famous people in the music industry, about 10 years before they get famous. That’s all you’ve got to do.” When he looks back on those early years writing or co-writing songs, Tempchin says he remembers them mostly as “insanely-glorious, interesting” times. “We had LSD, we had the birthcontrol pill, and it just all came together in this huge outpouring of creativity, and I was happy to just be part of it.” And how does it feel to be the guy
whose songs everybody knows, and yet he remains mostly anonymous? “It’s perfect,” he says. “If people don’t know me that’s great, because I can still live my life.” With his performing roots originating as a blues-harmonica player, Tempchin still characterizes himself as “just a folksy guitar player,” but clearly with achievements in song-writing that have had a lasting impact on the music industry. Tempchin will perform at the Coto de Caza Golf and Racquet Club on Saturday 23 September. Coto’s own Tony Uzzi and The Nick Justice Band, whose newest album, “The Dance at Dawn,” dropped several weeks ago, as well. The concert is open to nonmembers; tickets available at 949.858-4100. Seating limited.

Protect your eyes from sunburn: How to pick shades Finally! Warmer weather is here, and for most people, this means more time outside. While everyone wants to enjoy summer to the fullest, outdoor enthusiasts must remember that the sun, with all the benefits it brings, also has many dangerous effects. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays are strongest during the summer, and can damage unprotected eyes in as little as 15 minutes. While wearing sunglasses with UVA/UVB protection is important throughout the year, taking extra sun-safety precautions during the summer is especially important. The need for sunglasses is universal, but tastes and lifestyle needs vary. But whether your tastes run to aviators or wayfarers, mirrored or tinted, the sunglasses you choose affect far more than your style; they can directly impact your eye health, too. Fortunately, it’s possible to find sunglasses that protect your eyes and celebrate your sense of style. As you’re shopping for sunglasses, keep these tips in mind: * Pick the right shape. Just as the shape of your face influences your choice in haircuts, it will affect what type of sunglasses look good on you. People with oval faces can wear almost any shape of sunglasses. Rectangular frames and lenses will help add length to a round face, and oval glasses will complement diamond or square faces. If your face is more oblong than oval, consider a
round or square frame that rests at the widest part of your face. * Choose the right lenses. Choose lenses that provide broad-spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB light. WebMD.com says you should look for a label indicating the lenses block 99 to 100 percent of UVB and UVA rays, meet ANSI (American National Standards Institute) requirements, and provide UV 400 protection. If glare is a concern, polarized lenses filter out sunlight reflected off flat surfaces such as water or pavement, making them a good choice if you’ll be wearing them boating or while driving an automobile. * Find the right solution. Eyeglass wearers should use sunglasses too, but many go without proper sun protection because of the high cost of prescription sunglasses or the inconvenience of having to switch glasses when they move from indoors to outdoors. Solar Shield has solved cost, style and convenience issues with a range of attractive Fits Over sunglasses that slip on over prescription eyewear and clipon sunglasses that attach to virtually any style of eyeglasses. Significantly less expensive than prescription sunglasses, these options make it cost-effective to keep multiple pairs wherever you need them - in the car, office, at home or in your gym bag. A variety of styles ensure you can easily achieve the right look for

any personality and every occasion. Lenses block 100 percent of UVA/ UVB rays, are polarized to reduce glare and are scratch resistant. Log on to www.solarshield.com to learn more. * Wear the right lens tint. Lens tint impacts more than just personal style. UV protecting coating is clear, so a lighter-hued lens can be just as effective at UV protection as a darker one. The color of the lens will, however, affect your perceptions of color. For minimal color distortion, choose gray, green or brown lenses, especially if you’ll wear them while driving. * Spend the right amount.
-Remember that while many lowcost shades probably won’t provide adequate UV protection, you still don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars to get a good pair of sunglasses. Options like Solar Shield are affordable, durable and highquality alternatives to prescription sunglasses or high-priced designer shades. And regardless of how much you pay, it is always important to evaluate the quality and durability of every pair before you buy. Rancho Santa Margarita Little League Champions Honored at Dinner with Baseball Legends, Bobby Grich and Rod Carew
Santa Margarita Little League team with Rod Carew, Bobby Grich and Coach CJ Ankrum Story by Wendy Hunt Photos by William Casper, Coto de Caza News Staff Photographer On 9/12/17, the 2017 Rancho Santa Margarita Santa Margarita Little League celebrated their title at Tutto Fresco, in Rancho Santa Margarita, California They are the 2017 Little League California Division 3 All Star Champions. The young men, along with their families enjoyed a catered dinner and met with baseball legends, Bobby Grich and Rod Carew. Bobby Grich played for the Baltimore Orioles from 1970 - 1975, then signing a contract with the California Angels in 1976. He went on to play with the Angels from 1977
- 1986. He later joined the Angels Hall of Fame in 1988. He then joined the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame in 1998. During his tenure he won 4 Golden Glove Awards and was a 6 All-Star selection. Winning the Silver Slugger Award in 1981 and was the AL home run leader. Rod Carew played for the Minnesota Twins from 1967-1978, then being traded to the California Angels from 1979-1985. He joined the Angels Hall of fame in 1991, having his number 29 retired on 8/12/1986. Later on he also joined the Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame in 2000. Rod was inducted in the baseball Hall of Fame in 1991. He ended his career with a .328 career
average, 3,053 hits, 7 batting titles and 18 All-Star selections. Both Bobby and Rod were happy to pose for photos and sign autographs for these young men. The 2017 Little League team presented the owner of Tutto Fresco, Steve White, with an autographed team photo. He said “ I sincerely appreciate this gift and plan to hang this photo in the restaurant soon” These boys had their parents and the city supporting them through out each and every game. This team is led by their manager, CJ Ankrum. He certainly understands these boys and has compassion. He has shown the boys there is a time for rest and there’s a time to work. The team played 19 games to win the championship. Going from June 25 - August 20. It started with the team playing in their own district which consists of teams from San Clemente to Mission Viejo. After winning the district, they moved on to play in the Section finals. This consisted of teams from San Clemente to Garden Grove. They won the Section and moved on to play in the State, which consisted of teams from Santa Barbara to San Diego. After winning State they moved on to play in the West Region which consisted teams from Hawaii to Montana. Rich Gray (Coach), Bobby Gray, Rod Carew, Joey Gray, Bobby Grich Of the 433 teams that participated
in the West Region, these boys played their hearts out to be #1 in the West Region. They finally moved on to play in the World Series. Through their hard work, determination and commitment this team achieved a great reward. In the words of Henry Ford “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.” The average age of these players is 12 and some even play dual sports. To be so dedicated at such a young age is astonishing. Rancho Santa Margarita residents believe that one of these young men could be the next Mike Trout, Bobby Grich, or Rod Carew, and it will be our turn to ask them for their signature.

Santa margarita Eagles Beat Mayfair, Move to 4-0, Face off with Mission Viejo Tonight
The Eagle football team defeated Mayfair last week by a score of 49-3 to set up a showdown tonight against the Diablos of Mission Viejo
Senior Captains (L-R) Alex Kilander (71), Caden Fitch (5), Chad Magyar (23) and Johnny McCartan (31) lead the Santa Margarita Santa Margarita Eagles out onto the field. By: Sean Zeitler Photos by: Robert Russell The 2017 dress rehearsal is over. The Santa Margarita Eagles (4-0, 0-0) defeated their first four opponents in Downey, Loyola, Alemany and Mayfair by a combined score of 201-10. Although tonight’s game is not a Trinity league game, the caliber of coaching and play on the field is of that tier as the Santa Margarita Eagles will host Mission Viejo (4-0, 0-0) at Trabuco Hills High School with kickoff set for 7:00pm. Santa Margarita looks to avenge last year’s 48-21 loss at Mission Viejo in a showdown that features two undefeated teams that currently occupy two of the top four spots on OCVarsity’s Top 10 list, with Mission ranked #2 and the Santa Margarita Eagles #4. Before we move on to tonight’s game, let’s take a look back at last week. Santa Margarita put on another stellar offensive performance led by senior Chad Magyar’s 195 rushing yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns. Continuing his impressive junior campaign, Jake Thomas rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown. The 1-2 punch of Magyar and Thomas have now rushed for a combined 816 yards (Magyar 564, Thomas 252) and 12 rushing touchdowns (Magyar 9, Thomas 3). Malone Mataele only had three carries for 18 yards, but two of those
were for touchdowns, giving him six touchdowns total for the season. Senior quarterback Josiah Norwood completed 15 of 24 passes (63%) for 246 yards and a touchdown. The leading receiver for the Santa Margarita Eagles was senior Mark Eaton who had four catches for 79 yards and a touchdown. In all, Santa Margarita had six rushing touchdowns and one receiving. Defensively, senior Caden Fitch led all Santa Margarita Eagles with eight total tackles, sophomore Logan Schwenke had two sacks alongside Alex Kilander and Matt Lynch also recording a sack each. This stout defense is now giving up an average 2.5 points per game. A whole new season starts tonight when the Santa Margarita Eagles finally take on a team with familiar faces. Many of the players on both teams have grown up with one another and played pop warner together which makes for even more intrigue and excitement. So far this season, Santa Margarita traveled to Downey High School (44 miles) and Loyola High School (56 miles), before hosting Alemany (75 miles) and Mayfair (41 miles). For tonight’s Fox Sports West Game of the Week, Mission Viejo will more than likely take Marguerite, to Los Alisos which will drop them off at Mustang Run, a mere 5.8 mile journey. Santa Margarita will head northeast up
Santa Margarita Eagle cheerleaders were all smiles at the homecoming game against Mayfair. Antonio before jumping on to Santa Margarita Parkway for a quick little 5.2 mile trek to Trabuco. If only we could get more games within a 15 mile radius… According to Max Preps, Mission Viejo is ranked 37th in the country and sixth in the state, with Santa Margarita ranked 52nd in the Nation and 10th in the state. Get there early, parking will be at a premium as will the play on the field. CIF-SS Fox Sports West Game of the Week #2 Mission Viejo vs. #4 Santa Margarita At Trabuco Hills High School, Kickoff at 7:00pm Chad Magyar rushed for 195 Game will air delayed at 8:30pm yards and had three touchdowns. Orange County Museum of Art OCMA presents Shi Zhiying The Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA) on October 7 presents the first solo museum exhibition for Shanghai-based Shi Zhiying. Influenced by Buddhism, Shi Zhiying has become well known in her native China for stark monochromatic paintings of uniform vistas — open water, Zen sand gardens, carpets of grass, facades of weathered ancient structures. The exhibition presents 18 large-scale paintings and a selection of watercolor and ink drawings; including Rock Carving of Thousand Buddhas, painted in 2014-15 and recently acquired by OCMA. “When we installed Shi Zhiying’s work in the 2015 exhibition My Generation: Young Chinese Artists, we knew this was an artist to follow and soon after, we were fortunate to acquire Rock Carving of Thousand Buddhas,” stated OCMA Director and CEO Todd D. Smith. “Our new exhibition allows us to examine the greater range of her work and continues OCMA’s goal to be a leader in presenting the freshest voices from around the Pacific Rim.” Shi Zhiying’s fluent observational painting embodies and promotes intense reflections on individuality and the passage of time. “Some things haven’t changed, from the distant past all the way to the present
and the future,” the artist states. “They are things which everyone possesses.” In her 2013 series, The Relics, Shi debuted large-scale paintings of decorative and religious relief carvings and intimate portraits of antique vessels that illuminate the spirit of the imagery that has endured for hundreds of years. Her monumental paintings of eroded carved stone, such as OCMA’s Rock Carving of Thousand Buddhas, capture an immeasurably slow but consistent transfer between physical presence, flatness and nothingness. Inspired by the artist’s travels in China, Cambodia, and India, her chosen subjects have been softened by hands and the environment. Carefully rendering these weathered reliefs, Shi’s depictions of ancient artworks intimate the spirit of the imagery that has endured for hundreds of years. Born in Shanghai, China in 1979; Shi Zhiying currently lives and works in Shanghai. She graduated from the Oil Painting Department at the Shanghai University Fine Arts College in 2005. Shi Zhiying was included in a group exhibition My Generation: Young Chinese Artists at the Orange County Museum of Art in 2015. In 2009, the artist was the subject of a major solo exhibition titled From The Pacific
Ocean to the High Seas at the Ullens Center of Contemporary Art in Beijing. Her work has been featured in distinguished group exhibitions including Reactivation- the 9th Shanghai Biennale at the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art; N Minutes Video Art Festival, Shanghai; Decade of the Rabbit, White Rabbit Gallery, Sydney; DAS ICH IM ANDEREN, Stiftung Mercator, Essen; Double Act – 2010 Chinese Contemporary Art Exhibition, Red Town Warehouse, Shanghai; and Centennial Celebration of Women in Art, Shanghai Art Museum. Exhibition Credit Shi Zhiying is organized by the
Orange County Museum of Art and curated by OCMA Director & CEO Todd D. Smith. Support this exhibition is provided by The Segerstrom Foundation. OCMA INFORMATION Wednesday – Sunday, 11 am – 5 pm; with extended hours Friday, 11 am – 8 pm. Admission: Adults $10, seniors and students $7.50, children 12 and under are free. Fridays are free to the public and parking is always free. Orange County Museum of Art is located at 850 San Clemente Drive in Newport Beach, CA. John French Pilots Six-Year-Old Quentin to the Win in the Inaugural Blenheim Young Hunter Championship, presented by Brookway Stables
The top three in the $10,000 Blenheim EquiSports Young Hunter Championship: Quentin and John French, Holland and Katie Taylor, and Meant To Be and Karli Postel, with Archie Cox and Melissa Brandes. Photos by McCool Some of the sport’s brightest young hunters competed in the inuaugural two-round $10,000 Blenheim EquiSports Young Hunter Championship, presented by Brookway Stables. With an average score of 85.5, six-year-old Quentin, piloted by John French and owned by junior rider Charlotte Murray, looked like a seasoned campaigner to emerge the winner. It was a fiveyear-old, Shama Alghurair’s Holland, who finished second (average 83.25), with Katie Taylor aboard, and Karli Postel rode seven-year-old Meant To Be, owned by Karin Binz, to round out the top three. Aligning with their mission of offering an opportunity to develop future stars, Blenheim EquiSports launched the Young Hunter Series this year. Since the spring season, the young hunter classes at each Blenheim EquiSports
Quentin and John French
show were free and stall fees were discounted. Trainers and owners jumped on the unique opportunity to get additional and affordable mileage for their horses. The Young Hunter Championship wrapped up the popular series, with East Coast horsemen Timmy Kees and Otis Brown Jr. as the judging panel and Jason Shelley designing the courses. John French explained that Quentin’s owners, Charlotte Murray and her trainer, Jeni Brown, consider this to be a very special program. French also had high praise: “I love how it spotlights these horses and gives the horses and their owners nice recognition. I think it will do a lot to encourage owners to get young hunters.” Along with leading the victory gallop, Quentin was the highest placing six-year-old, and owner Charlotte Murray received a Blenheim
EquiSports cooler, a beautiful pewter trophy, prize money and a pewter picture frame with a gift certificate to McCool Photography, presented by Balmoral Farm. French earned the Leading Gentleman Award, taking home a handsome Fidir briefcase, and also the Blue Ribbon Blankets embroidered coolerette as the winning trainer. Trainer Kristi Frishman sensed that Holland, who was imported as a jumper, was better suited to the hunter ring, and asked Taylor to show the young horse. Taylor called Holland, owned by Shama Alghurair, a natural, both brave and attentive, and the pair has already competed in a few National Hunter Derbies this year. As the Leading Lady Rider Award recipient, Taylor took home a gorgeous Sienna Jones handbag, and Holland was the top scoring five-year-old. Meant To Be’s third place finish was a thrill for owner and amateur rider Karin Binz. In addition to the mileage gained through this program, Binz was pleased with the chance to recoup show expenses. A professional braider, Binz does the grooming and braiding for her horse, so it was an extra special moment to see her “very sweet horse” shine with Brookway Stables’ assistant trainer Karli Postel, who earned the top score in round one of 87. Amateur rider Kristi Siam’s sixyear-old Patriot with trainer Peter Lombardo in the irons was fourth. Fifth-place finisher Riley Benvenuti and her own six-year-old Arnold Palmer travelled from Sacramento specifically for the Young Hunter
Championships. “This was the first time we have come to San Juan Capistrano,” explained the trainer from River Bend Equestrian. “We think it’s a really great way to promote the younger horses.” Presenting sponsor Archie Cox, owner of Brookway Stables, commented that he thought this class would offer the ability to showcase the future stars in the hunter ring. With the top eight ribbon winners all earning average scores in the eighties, these five, six and seven-year olds proved he was right. The Equifit Best Turned Out Groom’s Award went to Guilherme Flores, who groomed Allie DeSimone’s six-yearold Lord Livingston. Young trainer Robert Sean Leckie piloted the gorgeous gray, earning the second highest score in round one of 86 and an overall average of 81 to finish seventh. Every rider who earned a top twelve spot took home a pair of Roeckl Sports gloves. Two top championships, one for hunters and one for jumpers, are on the calendar for Friday, September 15th, at the Blenheim Fall Tournament. The CPHA West Coast Green Hunter Incentive Championships, with prize money at over $30,000, will kick off the morning competition in the Pacific Field. Before the class begins, Bonus Cash Awards will be presented to the top three owners and top three riders for the 2017 season. Switching to the young jumper arena, the $20,000 Interactive Mortgage Horses 10 & Under Futurity Final will wrap up the day in The Oaks International Grand Prix Field.

F E S TIVA L BA L L ET T H EATRE ANNOUNCE S A 2 0 1 7 - 2 0 1 8 SEASON OF ENCHANTMENT AT IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE Festival Ballet Theatre (FBT), Orange County’s resident professional ballet company, is pleased to announce its 2017-18 season. The year of classic ballet favorites will begin with Alice In Wonderland on October 14 & 15, followed by The Nutcracker from December 9-24, Coppélia on March 24 & 25, concluding with Gala of the Stars in August 2018. With masterful dancing and delightful whimsy, the Festival Ballet Theatre season opens with Alice in Wonderland on October 14th & 15th. Lewis Carroll’s classic tale magically comes to life with a beloved cast of characters - the lovable White Rabbit, the cunning Cheshire Cat, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, and the infamous Queen of Hearts. Take a journey down the Rabbit Hole, into Wonderland Garden and through the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, all adorned with fanciful sets, wildly realistic masks and colorful costumes. Choreographed by Emmy Awardwinning choreographer Robert Sund to Jean Sibelius’ lyrical melodies, Alice in Wonderland is an enchanting adventure that will delight children and adults alike. Create holiday memories for your family by sharing the magic of the cherished classic, The Nutcracker. Festival Ballet Theatre’s f a m i l y - f r i e n d l y, b r e a t h t a k i n g production features vibrant scenery and dazzling costumes, which make this age-old tradition sparkle like new. Get swept away by Tchaikovsky’s iconic score as the Sugar Plum Fairy, our heroine Clara, and a cast of hundreds take you on a magical journey to mystical lands. This full-length traditional production is choreographed and directed by Festival Ballet Theatre’s Artistic Director, Salwa Rizkalla, and features
world-renowned guest artists, FBT’s professional company dancers, and exceptional young talent from across the Southland. This year we will be offering a very special seasonal treat; The Nutcracker Tea Party. On select dates, guests will have an opportunity to enjoy tea, lemonade, finger sandwiches and sweet treats with Clara herself. The young star will tell the story of the Nutcracker and talk to her guests about the ballet and her magical adventure. Expect a special appearance by the Nutcracker Prince and his archenemy, the Mouse King, too! Photo opportunities and a party favor for each guest are included in the Nutcracker Tea Party ticket price. 2018 begins with the sentimental comic story of Coppélia which will delight audiences with its humor and intrinsic charm. Set in a small European village, this beloved tale tells the story of an eccentric inventor, Doctor Coppélius, who creates a life-size dancing doll that looks so lifelike, some believe she is real. When young villager, Franz, becomes infatuated with her, he casts aside his true heart’s desire, Swanhilda. She in turn, shows him his folly by dressing as the doll and pretending to come to life. Based upon two stories by E. T. A. Hoffmann, Coppélia was originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon, with music by Léo Delibes. Love, laughter and exquisite dancing make Coppélia a ballet to remember. Details about Festival Ballet Theatre’s Annual Gala of the Stars, slated for August 2018, will be announced soon. Single Tickets: Individual tickets for Festival Ballet Theatre’s 2017-18 Season are on sale now at the Irvine Barclay Box Office at 949-854-4646 x. 1 or online at thebarclay.org. PACIFIC SYMPHONY WELCOMES VIOLIN SUPERSTAR JOSHUA BELL
Violin Virtuoso Joshua Bell Pacific Symphony 2017-18 season continues to soar with a very special evening starring the reigning virtuoso of the violin, Joshua Bell, who enjoys a superstar status rarely afforded a classical musician. Bell joins the orchestra, led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, for an extraordinary, onenight-only special event featuring the heart-stopping beauty of Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, which in the hands of this beloved master is an experience not to be missed. The Boston Herald proclaimed that, “Joshua Bell is the greatest American violinist active today.” Like no other violinist of recent times, Bell has captured the imaginations of both critics and audiences alike, and is certain to set the bar high for the Symphony’s season ahead. Rounding out the program is one of Dvořák’s best-known and most-loved works—Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.” This special event takes place Saturday, Sept. 23, at 8 p.m., in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Selling fast and sure to sell out, limited tickets are available at $49-$199. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org. “I’m really thankful that Josh Bell, one of the greatest violinists and a good friend of mine and Pacific Symphony, has made the time to come and share another exceptional evening with us,” says Maestro St.Clair. “I welcome and value every opportunity to perform with this great artist. He’s incredibly enlightening and musically rewarding for both orchestra and audience alike.”
Bell, who has a habit of showing up at the most special occasions, returns for his sixth performance with Pacific Symphony, most recently appearing with the orchestra in 2014 and in 2010 to celebrate Maestro St.Clair’s 25th and 20th anniversaries, when he captivated audiences with his remarkable technique and exquisite playing. As the featured soloist on the movie soundtrack for “The Red Violin” and James Newton Howard’s Academy-Award®- and Grammy®nominated score for “Defiance,” Bell received a rave review from the composer John Corigliano during his acceptance speech upon receiving the Oscar for best film score for “The Red Violin”: “Joshua Bell plays like a god.” For this concert, Bell performs Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, which takes full advantage of the instrument’s expressive range, from the rippling high chords to the growling alto notes. Sibelius wrote of his affinity for the violin in his diary: “The violin took me by storm and for the next 10 years it was my dearest wish, my overriding ambition, to become a great virtuoso.” Although he never made it as a virtuoso, starting at the late age of 14, Sibelius poured his passion for the instrument into his only concerto, which can be heard in every note. Sibelius’ concerto stands as one of the most difficult and most recorded in the repertoire. With its wide variety of playing techniques and exploration of the breadth and depth of the instrument, it is a perfect vehicle to showcase Bell’s dazzling expertise. Also on the program is Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, which artfully melds
the rich folk melodies of America with classical techniques and represents both the triumph and tragedy the Czech composer saw in American music when he visited in 1892, as well as his music’s impact on Americans. The distinctively American sound in Dvořák’s famous Ninth is instantly recognizable. The subtitle for this symphony is “From the New World,” and not—as it’s often referred to— “The New World Symphony”; it was not exactly an “American” symphony, but rather a symphony “from the New World.” Dvorák was deeply inspired by American musical sources in composing it, but as a Czech nationalist and music educator, he believed strongly that composers should discover their own musical roots. The symphony opens with a portentous adagio that gives way to a quick allegro, expressing the excitement of discovery and unknown frontiers. Drawing upon Indian songs and African-American spirituals, the piece manages to encapsulate the spirit of both traditions. The Czech composer’s propensity for sketching landscape in music is evident throughout and the musically illustrated “rocks, crags and rushing waters” are an evocation of the heroic landscapes by American artists such as Albert Bierstadt, known for his sweeping vistas of the West. More about Joshua Bell: With a career spanning more than 30 years as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist and conductor, Bell is one of the most celebrated violinists today. Having received his first violin at age 4, Bell performed with Riccardo
Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra at 14, and made his Carnegie Hall debut at 17. His artistry is exemplified in his music directorship of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields (he is the only person to hold this post since Sir Neville Marriner formed the orchestra in 1958), and his release of more than 40 CDs since the age of 18, which have garnered Grammy, Mercury, Gramophone and Echo Klassik awards. He has collaborated with countless artists in and outside the classical arena and performed on television shows including the Grammy Awards, numerous “Live from Lincoln Center” specials, and on movie soundtracks. Sony Classical just released “ Joshua Bel l — The Cl assi cal Collection,” a 14-CD set of classical repertoire that displays Bell’s unique range, versatility and breathtaking virtuosity. This year also saw the release of the illustrated children’s book “The Dance of the Violin,” recalling a seminal moment in Bell’s 12-year-old life when, after initially making a mistake at the Stulberg International String Competition, he is given a second chance. This marks Bell’s second appearance in a children’s book. The first was “The Man with the Violin,” retelling the story of Bell’s famous experiment in Washington, D.C.’s Metro station. A dedicated arts advocate, Bell is involved with Education Through Music and Turnaround Arts, a partnership between The President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
