Exhibition Through December 4, 2016. Brian Bress: Make Your Own Friends offers an in-depth look at the last ten years of Bress’s practice. Bringing together his video, sculpture and works on paper for the first time, the exhibition is the most significant presentation of the L.A. artist’s work to date. Bress is known for the fictional characters he creates, inspired by 1980s children’s programming, exotic world cultures and historical art movements. Born as doodles or collages, these imaginative figures take shape as sculptural costumes and come to life on video, performed
in front of elaborately composed backdrops. Brian Bress: Make Your Own Friends is jointly organized by Whitney Tassie, curator of modern and contemporary art at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA), and Nora Burnett Abrams, curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. The exhibition is sponsored in part by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the UMFA Friends of Contemporary Art (FoCA), and the Director’s Vision Society at MCA Denver. The exhibition catalogue is made possible by the Elizabeth

By: Sean Zeitler Photos By: Robert Russell After dropping their season opener to the number two ranked team in Orange County, the Eagles (1-1) used a balanced offensive attack last Friday to defeat the visiting Loyola Cubs by a score of 37-7. Senior quarterback Richard Wagner was back to form, connecting on 22 of 30 passes (73%) for 397 yards and three touchdowns. Wagner’s favorite target on the night was none other than 6’4” 215-pound Oklahomacommit Grant Calcaterra. After a modest evening against Mission Viejo, Calcaterra showed what all the hype was about, hauling in 14 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns including a long of 83 yards. The 2016 Eagles are making their mark on the record books, as Calcaterra’s three touchdown night tied a school record for most touchdowns in a game with some of the most renowned names in Santa Margarita Football lore. Calcaterra is now tied with John Minardi ’98 (five times), Brad Finneran ’94, Mike O’Gorman ’99 and Kyle Sweet ’15 for three touchdowns in a game. Wagner’s second favorite target in the passing game was junior Chad Magyar who had three catches of his own for 57 yards respectively. The passing game was set up cordially by 211 total rushing yards thanks to senior running back Trey Green and Magyar. Green would go on to finish his night with 18 carries for 107 yards and a touchdown, courtesy of a 26 yard scamper on his ninth carry of the evening. Magyar had a breakthrough night for himself, finishing just shy of the century mark, Page 8
tallying 99 yards on 12 carries. When all was said and done offensively, four Eagles eclipsed the century mark for total yards, with Wagner’s 402 yards (397 pass, 5 rush), Calcaterra’s 292 yards (all receiving), Magyar’s 156 yards (99 rush, 57 receiving), and Green’s 107 (all rushing) yards. Defensively, the Eagles were led by the heart and soul of the defense, middle linebacker Caden Fitch. Fitch was the only Eagle with double digit tackles (12) and was credited with 1.5 sacks. Fitch is now leading the Eagle defense in averaging 11 tackles and 0.8 sacks per game. Three other Eagles got in on sacks as well, including Sean Toohey (1.0), David Chen (1.5), and Malik McClain (1.0). The Eagle secondary had a big night, holding Loyola quarterback Sean O’Malley to only six of 16 (38%) for 96 yards and two interceptions. One-third of O’Malley’s passes were actually made by the Eagles, with two interceptions going to seniors Brennan Gibbons and Darian Fernandez, who brought them back for 42 and 36 yards each. The Eagles (1-1) will travel tonight to Alemany High School (1-1) to take on the host Warriors. Alemany is coming off a devastating overtime loss to a familiar foe, having lost to JSerra last week by a score of 2827. Alemany is averaging 34.5 points per game and 399 total yards (202 rush, 197 pass). The Eagles are now averaging 29 points per game and 405 total yards (124.5 rush, 280.5 pass). Defensive tactics well demonstrated by each of the teams who battled their way to a
frighteningly close overtime thriller at Tesoro High last week La Habra had two touchdowns to terrify the hometown crowds in the first half but both were negated by penalty calls from the referee including an illegal block. If not for the penalties the game could have quickly taken a new direction. La Habra Highlander Punt returning sensation Prince Ross rumbled 91 yards for a touchdown against
Tesoro only to have it called back for another penalty. The rest of the first half seemed equally disappointing for the Highlanders, scoring just three first down possessions and racking up only five yards in ten tries at the Titans. A familiar face from Mission Viejo was Tesoro Titan’s newest Quarterback Chase Peterson, newly transferred from Mission Viejo in his first battle for
the Titans. He hurled a TD pass to Tesoro Titan Wide Receiver Joe Morenc, looking like a seasoned starter. Petersen also dropped one into the skillful hands of Graeden Sharpe at the start of overtime who raced for first down yardage with the pigskin. The Point after touchdown by kicker Joe Rizkallah sealed the Highlanders’ fate with the game ending 14-13 for Tesoro.

Group of Guide dogs Have you ever seen a visually impaired person in public and didn’t know how to react, or felt awkward? Have you ever wondered what it’s like to ‘see’ through the eyes of their guide dog? This September, for National Guide Dog Month, Natural Balance, the maker of premium-quality pet food and Guide Dogs for the Blind, a national non-profit that trains exceptional guide dogs to serve the blind or visually impaired are partnering up to spread awareness about the incredible bond between visually-impaired ‘handlers’ and their guide dogs. National Guide Dog Month was inspired by Natural Balance’s cofounder Dick Van Patten, who was blindfolded during a visit to a guide dog school and got to experience an amazing new way to move through the world. In addition to providing better mobility for their handlers, guide dogs provide a social bridge, opening a world of possibilities for friendship and human connection. Recently, local Los Angeles resident Melissa Hudson and her fourlegged partner Camry have been awarded with Natural Balance’s ‘Top Human-Canine Teams Who Make Us Believe’ recognition. They are an outstanding example of the profound partnership that humans and their dogs are capable
of—and something all dog lovers could aspire to. Here’s their story: Diagnosed with juvenile arthritis at age 3, Melissa was at risk of losing her eyesight from a very young age. In college, Melissa had to sit closer and closer to the whiteboard in her classes and could no longer see her friends waving to her across campus. As her vision continued to deteriorate, her doctor told her: “Melissa, you need to face the facts, you’re going blind.” She was just 27 years old. The hardest step after hearing this shocking news was accepting the use of a cane to help get around. Melissa wanted to bring her old self back and move around freely—her first step was to apply to Guide Dogs for the Blind. Now on her third guide dog—a beautiful black labrador named Camry—Melissa is an entirely different person. She says that with Camry, her “invisibility clock has been lifted.” Her independence and mobility have been enhanced, and new-found freedom shines through her countless adventures with Camry. The two have traveled to three continents, including North America, Europe, and Asia. Even more importantly, through the highest of highs and lowest of lows, Camry is always by Melissa’s side. “She’s the one who knows exactly how I’m feeling, whether I’m having

She adds, “The misconception is that guide dogs don’t love to work, she doesn’t want to stay in! She wants to be out and about, and I give her that opportunity.” From navigating through the chaotic streets of Los Angeles to dodging skateboarders, Camry and Melissa tackle each new obstacle like professionals. GOLD STAR MOTHERS HONORED BY ELKS
By: Andy Costello Publicity Photos by: Mike Klinger & Assist Shelly Blair An impressive display of two armored reconnaissance vehicles of 1st Battalion Marines greeted guests as they arrived at the Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge for a luncheon honoring Gold Star Mothers and families. David Perry, Elks National Veterans Service Member of the Orange Coast District was event chairman and master of ceremonies. Perry welcomed the one hundred forty (140) members and guests in attendance. Marines from Camp Pendleton 1st Battalion 5th Marines presented the Colors. Elks Lodge President Dave McLeod led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Lodge Chaplain Greg Morgan gave the invocation. The program began with the National Anthem sung by Melissa McKenzie. Nineteen (19) Medals of Valor were presented to the families of the fallen heroes by Veteran members of the Elks Lodge. Major Lance Day United States Marine Corps Executive Officer of 1st Battalion 5th Marines was the keynote speaker for the event. Major Day praised the Elks for their commitment to the military and to the families of those made the ultimate sacrifice. He spoke of the drive and passion to become a warrior that is inside every person who decides to join the military. Day said that every veteran in the room, everyone in his current Battalion, and every upcoming warrior has the same desire to defend our country and is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice. It doesn’t matter what war they fought in, all have that common goal. He also thanked the Gold Star Mother organization for being a support group throughout the country for mothers and families. After Major Day spoke, another significant event,
Marine Major Lance Day and Event Chairman Dave Perry with Gold Star Mothers and wives not on the program, took place when the Gold Star Mothers all dressed in white took the floor and presented every Vietnam Veteran in the room with a special pin they had designed. Vietnam Vets silently waited in two lines to meet the Gold Star Mothers and receive their pin. It was very touching to everyone in the room. Lunch of Southwestern chicken salad followed by rice pudding was prepared by the Elks kitchen volunteers. It was served by the Sea Scouts of Mariner Ship 936. The ten young men and women were also tasked with the duty of medal bearers for the veteran escort. Music was provided by the Karaoke King Roy Southerland. Event Chairman Dave Perry thanked the Elks Charity Committee for sponsoring the event and the Elk volunteers who helped Elk Veteran of three wars Tom Spry took part in the liberation of Guam, make the afternoon a success. and Gunnery Sgt. Damasco Sultis, who fought in the invasion of Iwo Jima, with Elks Veterans Chairman David Perry.

Photos by Ann Chatillon Girl Scouts of Orange County has announced its roster of 2016 Celebrate Leadership honorees, seven extraordinary local female leaders who are Girl Scout alumnae and champions of Girl Scouting. The women will be recognized at the organization’s Seventh Annual Celebrate Leadership event on November 4, 2016 at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach. Each Celebrate Leadership Honoree will be paired with a current Girl Scout, ranging from Daisy (kindergarten) to Ambassador (grades 11-12), providing the leaders of tomorrow with an opportunity to connect with leaders of today. Girl Scouts of Orange County’s Seventh Annual Celebrate Leadership event is chaired by Shannon Kennedy, President, US Markets- Southwest for BNY Mellon Wealth Management, and Ashleigh Aitken of Counsel at Aitken* Aitken* Cohn. This signature event will host over 400 of Orange County’s community and business leaders for an evening of inspiration, dinner, auctions, and surprises. Funds raised will support leadership development programs for more than 21,000 Orange County Girl Scouts and more than 10,000 dedicated Girl Scout volunteers who guide them to Ellen Bancroft of Coto de Caza lead their best lives. 2016 Celebrate Leadership Honoree: Ellen Bancroft of Coto de Caza and Office Managing Partner of the Orange County office of global law firm, Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP. Tennyson earned her Curved Bar, equivalent to Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks, of Mary “Muff” Tennyson, of today’s Gold Award-- the highest honor in Girl Scouting, in 1959. Huntington Beach Newport Beach Socorro Vasquez, of Laguna Beach, is a long time community volunteer and philanthropist. Her connection to Girl Scouts began in grammar school and continued as leader of her daughter’s troop and enthusiastic supporter of her granddaughter’s Junior Troop 2534. Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks, of Huntington Beach, is president and CEO of Earth Friendly Products (EFP). A former Girl Scout, Vlahakis-Hanks continues her involvement through her daughter and has hosted troop events at EFP, providing opportunities for girls to earn badges and learn about environmental sustainability. The Girl Scouts of Orange County are 36,000 strong; more than 21,000 girls and nearly 15,000 adults who believe every girl can change the world. The season of homework and PTO meetings is here, meaning it’s time to gear up for a successful school year. A balanced eating plan helps children, and adults, to concentrate, learn and problem-solve, in and out of the classroom. When creating your back-to-school shopping lists, remember to include foods that will nourish your child’s growing brain. Plan your family’s meals ahead of time and pay close attention to the amount of protein you serve your children at breakfast. Kids should eat about 20 grams of protein before heading off to school to help avoid hunger pangs during morning classes. I spy with my little eye: nutrients kids need for healthy vision
The struggle at the dinner table between parents and their picky eaters isn’t uncommon. Add in a food jag, when children fixate on a particular food and don’t want to eat anything else, and the struggle turns to worry - “Is my child getting enough nutrients in his or her diet?” While many parents worry that their children aren’t getting the right nutrients for proper overall growth, many also overlook the specific need of vitamins and nutrients for eye health. If their child’s vision is OK, then there’s no cause for worry. In fact, only 14 percent of parents are worried about their children developing vision problems in the future, according to a recent survey by Kelton/DSM Nutritional Products. Now’s the time to help children make food choices that are healthy and provide the right nutrients for their eye health. While carrots are a no-brainer when it comes to providing beta carotene (pro vitamin A) for healthy vision, a slew of other nutrients are necessary for eye health, including vitamin E, lutein, zeaxanthin and the omega-3s DHA and EPA. If you have a picky eater, try sneaking in foods that are rich in these eye-healthy nutrients. Dark leafy green vegetables (kale, spinach,
collards and turnip greens), eggs, broccoli, peas and corn are super stars when it comes to providing lutein and zeaxanthin. Fatty fish provide the omega-3s DHA and EPA. Oils, wheat germ and peanuts are loaded with vitamin E. Registered dietitian and author, Elizabeth Somer, provides ideas on how to sprinkle in these nutrients into
everyday meals. Idea 1: Whip steamed chard or spinach into mashed potatoes to make a healthy and eye-catching dish for your kids that is rich in lutein and zeaxanthin. Green mashed potatoes, anyone? Idea 2: Grate carrots and add them to pasta sauce to give it a boost of beta carotene.
Idea 3: Barring any nut allergies, blend peanut butter, wheat germ and a bit of honey to use as a fruit dip or sandwich spread. The peanuts and wheat germ add a kick of vitamin E. All Animals, All the Time About 65 percent of pet owners post about their furry friends on social media an average of two times per week.
