Smart Breakfast Tips to Kick-Start Your New Year

2 tablespoons sorghum syrup 2 tablespoons coconut oil 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut chips 1/2 cup popped sorghum (popped according to whole grain package directions) Heat oven to 200 F. Spread sorghum on jelly roll pan. Place in oven 1 hour, turning every 15 minutes. Remove from oven and transfer to large mixing bowl. Stir in

oats, pepitas and almonds. Raise oven temperature to 300 F. In 1-quart sauce pan, heat sorghum syrup and coconut oil until oil melts. Blend well. Pour liquid mixture over dry ingredients; stir to blend well. Spread evenly on jelly roll pan. Bake 30 minutes, turning every 10 minutes. Remove from oven and stir in cranberries, coconut chips and popped sorghum. Allow to cool. Break apart. Store in airtight container.

The Beach Boys are led by

Swap Out Sugar for Better Health You probably realize that eating too many sugary foods and gaining weight go hand in hand. What you may not know is that aside from loading up on calories that help pack on the pounds, consuming too much sugar can also harm your health in other ways. Consuming more than nine teaspoons of sugar a day for men and six teaspoons for women can lead to health problems, such as tooth decay, obesity and depression. Reducing your sugar intake can help more than your waistline; it can improve your overall health. First, it’s important to recognize that there are two types of sugar – natural sugar and added sugar. Natural sugar is found in fruits, milk and some whole grains. Added sugar is sugar that is added to processed foods and drinks, such as cookies, cereals and soda. Added sugar affects your body in many ways. It can be as addictive as drugs, tobacco or alcohol because it affects the same regions of the brain, triggering the pleasure sensors to release dopamine. Dopamine makes you want to eat more, even when you are not hungry. When you consume too much added sugar, your liver has to work extra hard to process it. Excess sugar in the liver often turns into fat, which can lead to liver damage or other health concerns, such as high cholesterol, diabetes or heart disease. It can also overload and damage your pancreas, which controls the blood sugar called insulin that powers your muscles and organs. Lack of insulin can cause muscle and nerve damage. Limit added sugars in your diet with these healthy alternatives: • Skip sugary cereals at breakfast. Instead, opt Page 4

for a protein-rich meal. Options, such as eggs, turkey sausage and whole-wheat toast with peanut butter are healthier ways to fuel your day. • Bring healthy snacks to work to ward off the temptation of sugary treats. Some smart choices include: frozen grapes, trail mix, yogurt, almonds, apple slices and peanut butter with celery sticks. • Instead of pie, donuts or cake, curb your sweet tooth craving by reaching for fresh fruit, low-fat frozen yogurt or a fruit and yogurt parfait. • If you can’t substitute a fruit, make your treats small, such as a single fun-size piece of candy.

simple steps to a happier, healthier 2016 Another year is upon us, leaving plenty of time to reflect on what went well (and not so well) in 2014. Before you start outlining your selfimprovement plan for 2015, consider this: only 8 percent of people who make new year’s resolutions actually stick to them. Control the urge to recycle annual resolutions that you know you’ll never keep. Instead, identify new opportunities to keep your body fresh and your mind focused. Here are four simple steps to a happier, healthier 2015. * Schedule a few “mental health days” - We spend a lot of time at the office. And if you’re clocking more than 10 hours a day, it’s likely too much. Scientists often link overtime to everything from depression to cardiovascular issues. It’s no secret that we all count down the days until that next holiday vacation or summer road trip. But why wait? Don’t put off precious time away from the daily grind. Instead, avoid burnout by planning a few long weekends every year that help you recharge and refocus. Whether you’re sleeping in and catching up on your DVR or connecting with old college roommates, a little R&R will do wonders for your morale. * Improve your indoor air quality Nine in 10 homeowners realize poor indoor air quality can contribute to certain health issues, yet only onequarter are worried about the air quality in their homes, according to a national survey from Broan-NuTone and Kelton. With the majority of homeowners spending 90 percent of their time indoors, it’s important to identify telltale signs of unhealthy air before they trigger health issues.

If you’re noticing foggy bathroom mirrors after showering or lingering food aromas after preparing meals, chances are your home isn’t properly ventilated. Protect your home and your family by updating your range hood or installing a new bath fan. * Clean out your closets - If you’re like most, you’re probably hanging on to one too many items that you’ve outgrown or no longer use. Free up hangers and closet space by taking inventory of any items you haven’t worn in several months. Holding on to jeans in the hopes you’ll fit into them? Donate them to someone who can wear them now and treat yourself to a new pair. Stockpiling old bridesmaid dresses? Have them altered into the ideal cocktail dress. Hoarding fashion jewelry and accessories that are no longer in style? Create a dress-up box for nieces, young cousins or students. Not only will you make more space for things you do need, de-cluttering creates feelings of happiness and accomplishment.

* Try something new - If “learn to cook” and “lose 10 pounds” have been on your to-do list for years, it’s probably time to mix things up a bit. Be more specific when outlining goals. For example, instead of focusing on weight loss, why not focus on new classes to try out? From cardio kickboxing to spin class to ZUMBA and yoga, there are endless opportunities to get your heart rate (and your spirits) up. Check out your local gym and pledge to try something new every quarter until something sticks. As for cooking, turn it into a date night with your spouse by enrolling in a cooking class together. Or, buy a cookbook and take turns selecting new meals to prepare. Keep in mind that you won’t do yourself any favors by shrugging off goals or not planning in advance. Set up reminders and calendar invites to help keep you on track. Better yet, outline at least one shared resolution and invite friends or family members to join in.

Why you should consider the Mediterranean diet A healthy diet can be the foundation of a healthy life. While there are many food choices and diet options, one diet consistently grabs the attention of researchers. “The Mediterranean diet has been, and continues to be, studied widely,” says physician assistant Tricia A. Howard, a faculty member at South University, Savannah’s College of Health Professions. “I would recommend considering the Mediterranean diet to anyone who wants to make a healthy lifestyle change.” The Mediterranean diet is named after the geographical part of the world where most people consume plentiful amounts of fruits, vegetables, olive oil, nuts and fish. “This is a diet high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatories, which have many important health benefits,” explains Howard. Some of the benefits of the Mediterranean diet can be seen quickly. Howard says many patients see improvement in cholesterol levels and begin to lose weight within a few months of adopting the diet. Numerous research studies show that the long-term benefits include a decreased risk of heart disease and some types of cancer.

But Howard cautions that the Mediterranean diet is not about quick fixes. Instead, it is a lifestyle change that you need to follow consistently for years in order to reap all the benefits. “To get the many health benefits numerous researchers have found come with this diet, you must commit to it,” Howard explains. “Following this diet and benefiting from it is really about deciding that you are ready to take control of your health and about being willing to make substantial

changes in how you eat and what you cook. “A lot of wonderful foods are included in the Mediterranean diet,” says Howard. “But, red meat is not part of the diet, and that can make it tough for some people to strictly adhere to it.” Howard says even if you can’t strictly follow the Mediterranean diet, everyone should try to incorporate as many aspects of it as they can into their daily diet. “Substituting things in your diet

that you know aren’t the healthiest choices and replacing them with foods found in the Mediterranean diet is a smart decision,” Howard says. “And, it may help you begin the process of moving away from an unhealthy diet and towards one that has been proven repeatedly to have benefits. “Choosing foods from the Mediterranean diet is definitely a step in the right direction.”

Can’t keep a resolution? Outside support can help Holiday celebrations are a traditional way to cap off the year, but once the ball drops it’s time to usher in a new beginning with New Year’s resolutions. Each year, millions of Americans resolve to get in better shape and become healthier, better versions of themselves. But, unfortunately the vast majority don’t meet their goals. Less than a quarter of 1,000 people surveyed by YMCA of the USA kept their resolution in 2014. An overwhelming 71 percent said they tried but fell short, and 40 percent confessed that they made it through only a couple weeks or months. However, there’s hope for the coming year. One-third of survey respondents who plan to make a resolution in 2015 believe they’ll stick to it and reach their goals, with more than half believing that encouragement from others will keep them committed. Finding a supportive community can be beneficial in keeping resolutions on track. Organizations like your local Y offer a place to work out as well as opportunities to connect with others and give back to the community, which

can help foster more commitment to keeping resolutions. A positive outlook doesn’t always translate to action unless you set manageable goals and lean on the support of your health and wellness communities. Here are some tips to make a healthy New Year’s resolution stick: Start small. Set attainable resolutions. For example, if your goal is to exercise more frequently in the new year, don’t schedule seven days a week at the gym. Start with a reasonable three days a week. If you’d like to eat healthier, try replacing desserts with other foods you enjoy, such as fruit or yogurt. Take it one step at a time. Making a New Year’s resolution doesn’t require you to reassess every little detail of your life. Replacing unhealthy behaviors with healthy ones takes time, so don’t become overwhelmed. Work to change one behavior at a time, and then go from there. Choose a facility that focuses on a holistic approach to health. When it comes to adding healthy behaviors - like working out - to your lifestyle, finding a facility that

keeps you motivated is critical to maintaining your exercise routine. Before committing to a membership, take a tour of local gyms to find the best fit for you. Your facility should not be just a gym, but a community organization that offers more health, more hope and more opportunity. Establish a little friendly competition. More than half of the Y survey respondents felt a little “healthy competition” when friends encouraged them to be even more committed to keeping their New Year’s resolutions. Share your experiences with support groups - friends, family, fellow workout class members or close colleagues. Talking about your

struggles and successes will make your goals more obtainable and less intimidating. Set New Year ’s goals with someone you love. It’s easier to stick to your resolutions if you have a partner working toward similar goals. More than three-fourths of survey respondents indicated that they would set the same resolution for a member of their immediate family. Team up with a family member to set your 2015 goals, and establish a game plan that is dedicated to achieving them. simple ideas for living happier in 2016 Saving money and staying fit are traditional New Year’s resolutions, but overly packed schedules and the materialistic focus of modern day life are inspiring a new goal for many people: to live happier in 2016 and beyond. “To make 2016 the happiest year ever, think about how you rest, eat and move,” says Matt Johnson, health and performance expert and president of On Target Living. “I am a believer that mental health is directly related to physical health. For most of human existence we have viewed the mind - the head - different from the physical body of the neck down. New research is showing they have everything to do with each other. If you want optimal physical health, you need optimal mental health and happiness. When people are happier they tend to improve all aspects of their life.” Johnson offers six surprisingly simple, yet profoundly effective ways to boost mood and overall happiness in the new year: 1. Make sleep a priority Getting seven to eight hours of sleep each night is critical for the body to produce hormones that trigger happiness, explains Johnson. “I am a big fan of always going to bed with a positive attitude,” he says. “If you go to bed angry, worried or

stressed, that tends to come back the next day. Do what you can before bed to reset your mood. Read, take a bath, exercise or talk face-to-face. Try to avoid screen time.” 2. Make more time for family “Over the last 20 years, family time has vanished. Sporting events, projects, work and technology have swallowed this time,” says Johnson. “As the author of the cookbook Target to Table, I think family face-to-face time is the most important part of a healthy family relationship and happiness.” Johnson suggests planning family dinner two to three times a week. “When we start to eat dinner as a family in the home, our health and happiness will follow,” he notes. 3. Carve out whitespace Whitespace is time you dedicate to yourself to refresh, unplug and rejuvenate. This could be making time to do yoga, enjoy a hobby, read, meditate or take a bath. “People who have hobbies and activities that give them balance tend to be happier,” Johnson says. “If your hobby is texting, checking social media or watching TV, this will set you up for a feeling of emptiness. These things are fine in short periods, but too much will take away what life is giving us.” 4. Achieve work-life balance

With the expanse of the Internet and mobile commuting, workers are now connected more than ever before. But this connectedness can get out of control when answering emails 24/7, so work-life balance is important for overall happiness. “We all want to be successful, but with anything you need proper balance,” says Johnson. “If you look at professional athletes, the best ones try to find activities outside of their sport that help them stay hungry, engaged and excited. Find things that help you create balance in your life.” Johnson suggests: * Don’t check email after 8 p.m. * Go on a date night or family night * Exercise at a time that fits your schedule * Walk during lunch * Schedule a massage once a month 5. Fuel happiness from within “I believe we have more behavior and mental health issues than we should, and a big part of this is the lack of proper nutrients,” says Johnson. “The most important nutrient when it comes to brain health and mood is omega-3s.” America is one of the most deficient countries when it comes to omega3s, with an estimated 91 percent of people not getting enough. “The way that I encourage people to get

I encourage everyone to write a handwritten letter to one person each year who made a huge impact in their life. They may not know or maybe you don’t tell them often enough. My last letter was to my Mom. She is the glue in our family.”

The Laguna Playhouse Celebrates 95 Years and Raises $350,000 at Annual Gala Nearly 300 guests filled the Island Hotel in Newport Beach for Laguna Playhouse’s annual fundraising gala; this year’s event raised a record $350,000 in support of the Playhouse’s mission to enrich lives through the magic of live theatre, to provide educational opportunities for children and adults, and to create experiences that stimulate cultural and social interaction and inspire our community. Proceeds from the annual event help cover the operating costs of the 95-year old icon, one of the oldest continuing operating theaters west of the Mississippi. The celebratory event was co-chaired by Melinda Masson and Barbara MacGillivray. Masson welcomed celebrated Orange County community and business leaders with a champagne toast to 95 successful years and a surprise announcement, “For every donor who pledges $10,000 Winston Jewelers just announced that they will donate a jewelry item valued at $3000.00 per pledge.” Board of Directors co-chair Joe Hanauer spoke to the impact and achievements of Laguna Playhouse to the community stating, “Live theatre enhances our ability to express our thoughts and feelings. It often focuses on ethics and morals, providing life lessons. It enriches our lives and allows us to experience new and thought provoking ideas. This is the legacy of Laguna Playhouse in its’ 95th season and as we look to the future.” Highlights from the evening included the critically acclaimed Laguna Playhouse Youth Theatre welcoming guests with 95th Season Gala bracelets followed by a special dance presentation by Playhouse collaborators, Laguna Dance Festival. Award-winning actor and professional clown, Matt Walker, led guests in an entertaining fundraising segment, “Produce a Performance,” where the audience experienced how their donations materialized into full blown production elements and the much anticipated reprise of the very popular dance duet from this summer’s hit musical, Footloose, with stars Logan Farine and Lily Davis, closed out the evening’s entertainment. Executive Director, Karen Wood and Artistic Director, Ann Wareham, drew the winning ticket for the opportunity drawing of 100 premium bottles of wine which was won by Daniel and Francine Scinto. Karen Wood then shared an exciting announcement, “Jamie and Mohamed El-Erian have generously funded TheatreReach, The Playhouse’s professional outreach tour to elementary schools with a gift of $500,000.” The Gala culminated in an evening of dancing the night away. The event featured a Nolet’s Ice Bar where guests enjoyed signature Nolet and Ketel One drinks, and a special Etching Table where custom Kettle One Bottles were etched on-site. Keep your skin glowing by staying active as temperatures start to drop For some, chillier weather can decrease the likelihood of sticking to a consistent workout routine. Luckily, there are plenty of small changes one can make to ensure that staying active during short winter days and long nights remains a priority. Not only does exercise benefit physical and mental well-being, but it also has a positive effect on the look and feel of skin. Celebrity fitness trainer Kacy Duke’s motto for staying active is “movement is a privilege.” She firmly believes that colder weather is no excuse to press pause on one’s workout routine. As part of the Simple Skincare Advisory Board - a group of experts who help women care for their skin from the inside out - Duke is well-versed in the positive impact that physical fitness can have on one’s complexion. As the weather turns, she shares her tips for how anyone can stay active and ultimately keep skin glowing throughout the winter months. Make it a habit Duke advises clients to get into the habit of working out before the dead of winter arrives. “It can be a

challenge to start a fitness routine in freezing temperatures especially if you haven’t started taking small steps beforehand,” she says. “Push yourself by setting unrealistic goals that you think you may not be able to achieve, in other words think big to win big, so even if you fall a little short, you’re still ahead of the game and on your way to locking in a healthy exercise habit.” Lean on friends Switch out happy hour drinks for fitness outings with friends so that being active becomes a social activity. Plan to run a 5 kilometer race with a friend or schedule a weekly spin class together so that all parties are held accountable. “I recently created my ‘Girlfriend Training Sessions’ and ‘Bromance Workout Sessions’ so that girls and guys can work with me in a small, semi-private group setting and bond over a great workout and healthy sweat rather than caloriepacked cocktails,” says Duke. Fitness won’t feel like a chore once it’s enjoyed in a social setting. Remember the skin-loving benefits Exercise increases blood flow

and helps flush cellular debris out of the system. Plus, exercise tones muscles and reduces stress, all of which contributes to an improved overall appearance. At the end of any movement session, make facial cleansing a can’t-miss step to remove sweat and remaining traces of makeup. Try products that have no dyes, artificial perfumes or harsh chemicals that can upset skin, such as facial

wipes that refresh with one step (no rinsing required) and are ideal for packing in gym bags. As sleeping in makeup can increase likelihood of skin sensitivity, irritation and dullness, follow Duke’s advice: “Washing one’s face post-workout and before bed ensures what I like to call a ‘No Makeup Wakeup’ so you can start the day with naturally healthy-looking skin.”

The ultimate road trip This season, Americans are embarking on all types of journeys, from romantic weekends to outdoor activity focused getaways. But what defines the ultimate road trip? Hear what drivers have to say: For the romantic: Long, winding drives through scenic roads are timeless. The Hankook Gauge Index found that the majority of Americans think the most romantic way to get away is to “get in a car and keep driving” (38 percent), followed by taking a scenic train ride (37 percent), and flying far away in an airplane (25 percent). For the sports fanatic: It is football and hockey season, after all. What better way to celebrate these sports in all of their glory than taking a road trip to catch a game? Better yet, stay fit and enjoy the outdoors by hitting the road for the ski slopes. For the adrenaline junky: There’s nothing quite like zooming around in a sleek, sporty vehicle to get the heart pumping faster. According to the Gauge Index, race cars offer the “ultimate thrill ride,” compared to white water rafting, roller coasters and zip lining. Whether you’re planning an epic excursion or taking in the scenic roads with someone special, before cruising away you’ll want to keep in mind these Hankook Tire driving tips: * Check your tire pressure: With frequent weather and temperature changes, air in tires can expand and contract, causing them to lose air pressure. * Plan ahead for wet conditions: Rainfall, snow and other undesirable driving conditions can decrease visibility and cause hydroplaning. Make sure your windshield wipers are in good working condition. If driving on a road with water or ice, slow down and avoid sudden movements with the steering wheel or brake pedal. If you feel like you’re floating, a possible indication of lost traction, gently release the accelerator pedal until you feel the tires make contact with the road surface. * Stock up and be prepared: Extreme weather can cause you to go through lots of windshield washer fluid to ensure you can see ahead of you.

Check to make sure all of your vehicle’s fluid levels are full with engine coolant and oil, brake fluid and no-freeze windshield wash. You should also check to make sure you have a spare tire, ice scraper, booster cables and a flashlight stored in your trunk. * Don’t overload your car: Check the tire load carrying capacity indicated on the tire or vehicle owner’s manual for the maximum-recommended load. When replacing tires, the speed rating and load index of the replacement tires must be equal to or greater than that of the tire being replaced to maintain the speed capability and weight carrying capacity.

Prepare your car for winter with these simple tips Getting ready for winter is no small feat. It takes time and planning to make sure your family and your home are ready to brave the elements. But is your car as ready as you are? If you haven’t thought about preparations for your vehicle, these simple tips will help you prepare for the colder months ahead. * Check your tires. You depend on your tires more during the winter than any other season. So before the roads get slick, check your tires to be sure they aren’t worn and that they are properly inflated. You should be able to find the proper tire pressure on the inside of your driver’s side door. Once you’re sure your tire pressure is appropriate, make a note to check again later in the winter. Cold air will

cause the air in your tires to compress and may cause your tires to lose pressure. * Check your brakes. Your brakes will work harder once the icy conditions of winter set in. Make sure they are up to the task by bringing your vehicle in to your mechanic for a thorough brake inspection. * Wash and wax your car at a professional car wash. Putting your car through the car wash during the sloppiest season of the year may seem a strange idea but a thorough wash can remove harmful compounds that may cause damage when mixed with sand and road salt. Experts from the International Carwash Association also recommend a coat of wax for an extra layer of protection from the elements. Besides protecting your car, you’ll also be protecting the environment. Professional car washes can save up to 20 percent of the amount of water you’d use by washing your car at home. They do this by treating and reusing their water, rather than releasing toxic chemicals and grime into the storm drains, which can often occur when you wash your car yourself. You can

It’s good practice to stay on top of fluids such as oil, windshield washer or transmission fluid. But in the winter, no fluid is more important than your coolant because, if you’re out of coolant, you’re out of heat. It’s also never a bad idea to keep an additional bottle of coolant in your car for emergencies. * Test your battery. A lack of coolant will stop your heater from working and so will a dead battery. Before you head out this winter, be sure your battery is working properly. No one wants to be stranded by the side of the road with a dead battery and, in the cold winter months, being stranded could be dangerous. * Check your wipers. You checked the wiper fluid along with your other fluids but don’t forget the wipers themselves. Replace old wiper blades and make sure to have a reservoir full of wiper fluid. * Winter emergency kit. Sometimes

all the preparation in the world can’t prevent a winter emergency. If you find yourself stranded by the side of the road, a winter survival kit can be very helpful. Include an ice scraper/ brush, extra blankets or clothes - including hats and gloves - snacks and bottled water and a first aid kit. A small shovel can come in handy if you get stuck and a bag of cat litter can be used to provide needed traction for your tires. Getting your vehicle ready for winter while temperatures are still mild is a proactive approach to preventive maintenance that helps ensure safety, reliability and fewer unexpected repairs when severe winter weather strikes. By planning ahead you can ensure that your family and your car will be in for a smooth ride all winter long.
