County Agrees to R epair Ladera’s S treets You may not know that among the Civic Council’s many responsibilities is work with the county of Orange and other agencies to maintain the quality of our streets and to identify locations that enhance the safety of our residents. It is no secret that our streets have suffered significant deterioration. O’Neill, Benjamin and Sienna all have bumpy, cracked, pothole-laden locations that will require extensive removal and repair of the asphalt. The good news is that we will be receiving some relief around the middle of February when the county is planning to conduct approximately $3 million of work on the worst spots. The work unfortunately is going to require the closing of some streets along with several of the roundabouts but the county plans to set up signs with plenty of notice to allow residents to make alternative travel plans. They are aware of the traffic congestion at our schools during drop-off and pick-up times and have promised to mitigate inconvenience as much as possible. February Public Meeting Please, join the Ladera Ranch Civic Council for its upcoming meeting, on Monday, February 15th at 7pm at the Santa Margarita Water District building.

H o u s e t r a i n i n g y o u r p u p p y: T i p s f o r k e e p i n g your dog behaved and your home clean
Few things are as exciting as bringing home a new puppy. Whether Chihuahua or Great Dane, a pup’s playful antics delight people of all ages. Having a dog can bring many years of companionship and precious memories, but before you ask, “How much is that doggie in the window?” consider a few expert tips for positive housetraining. Responsible pet parents start planning long before bringing a puppy home. “Research your lifestyle - what your living accommodations are. Do breed research into what you want the pet for,” says Dr. Chris Stearns, partner at Dalton Animal Care clinic in Dalton, Ga. “It’s so important to have the right environment - enough room indoors and out, and enough attention.” Talk with different people who Page 4
can share insight about the breeds you are considering. Veterinarians, trainers, groomers and breeders can provide valuable information about what dogs are best for your lifestyle, and what to expect for each in regard to training. Stearns, along with Stephanie Daughtrey, a certified animal behaviorist at the clinic, offers these important tips for housetraining your puppy and keeping your home intact in the process. 1. Know potty triggers Start by understanding your puppy’s potty triggers. What exactly stimulates a pup’s bladder and digestive system? While it varies from dog to dog, triggers are typically feelings of excitement, like when visitors arrive, and particular times of day, like after he wakes up or right before bed. Keep in mind, puppies will need to go after eating and/or drinking - usually within 15 minutes. 2. Establish a routine Find a designated “potty patch” outdoors so your dog can associate that space with doing his business. Start by leash walking the pup to that spot so he can focus before spending any time playing. If your dog doesn’t go, consider keeping him on a leash inside too. Rotate 15 minutes inside and 15 minutes outside. Stay close to your
The Ladera Ranch News
new furry family member. If he starts to circle and sniff, in that familiar way, take him outside. If he starts to squat to urinate, clap or make a sharp sound that will stop him in the act. You can transfer him outside to finish and praise him there. “Young puppies learn through positive reinforcement - not negative. Give them a treat when they go potty outside - that reinforces the good behavior right then and there. Praise them with a happy tone of voice,” says Stearns. 3. Avoid indoor accidents Accept that a puppy will need to go outside every one or two hours. It’s the owner’s responsibility to provide plenty of time outdoors, otherwise if left unattended for extended periods, a puppy will find a place to piddle. “Close the doors out of the room where the puppy is - get baby gates to seal off other areas. A puppy will seek out areas of the house that are not part of the ‘family den’,” says Daughtrey. 4. Clean messes immediately “Accidents will happen,” says Stearns. “Expect it and work with it when it happens. You must deodorize it, so he can’t use it as a scentmarking area. Use a product that does more than just mask the odor - it needs to enzymatically destroy the chemical in the urine.”
Start by blotting to absorb as much liquid as possible. Then treat the mess with a pet stain and odor remover that has the Carpet and Rug Institute Seal of Approval. Each certified product that features the national trade association’s seal goes through rigorous testing in an independent laboratory, so you can be confident you’re treating the stain, removing the odors, and protecting the integrity of your carpet. If your carpet becomes deeply soiled from multiple accidents and dirty little puppy paws, you may want to consider hiring a professional carpet cleaner. For those with allergies, frequent vacuuming and regularlyscheduled cleaning will remove virtually all embedded allergens and pet dander. Certified CRI Seal of Approval service providers have the experience needed to treat stains, remove odors and leave carpet looking like new. Visit www.carpetrug.org to find a provider near you. 5. Spay or neuter Finally, spay or neuter your dog at the appropriate age according to your vet’s recommendations. Unneutered dogs typically urinate more in the house as an action of marking their territory, so it’s something every caring pet parent should consider.

Hossein Nayeri, 37, had been held without bond since September 2014, charged with kidnapping, torture, aggravated mayhem and burglary. Nayeri and two other men are accused of kidnapping a California marijuana dispensary owner in 2012, driving him to a spot in the desert where they believed he had hidden money and then torturing him. Deputy District Attorney Heather Brown told the The Orange County Register that Nayeri was a likely candidate to have planned the escape. She described him as diabolical, sophisticated, violent and cunning. “My first reaction was ‘Oh, my God, they let Hannibal Lecter out,’” she told the newspaper. A lawyer representing one of Nayeri’s codefendants in the 2012 case told the Los Angeles Times that when he heard about the escape, he immediately thought that Nayeri was the mastermind and had recruited the others. Lawyer Robert Weinberg said the savagery of the kidnapping case was an indication of how dangerous
Nayeri could be while on the run. Nayeri, Bac Duong, 43, and Jonathan Tieu, 20, were discovered missing from the Orange County Central Men’s Jail in Santa Ana on Friday, about 15 hours after they were present for an early morning head count. Authorities say the men cut through steel into duct work, climbed to the jail roof, but through a section of razor wire and rappelled down using makeshift rope apparently made from bedsheets. Sheriff’s Lt. David Sawyer said the men should be considered extremely dangerous and may be hiding in the area. All are accused of violent crimes, and at least one is connected to Vietnamese gangs in the area, Sawyer said. “We feel that they may be embedded somewhere in the community, and that is why we are reaching out to the community,” Sawyer said. Sawyer said someone in the area must know where they are or where they are headed. He said the identity of anyone who provided information could be protected. Rewards for
information leading to their capture total about $50,000. “We understand that you are in danger. We understand that you are fearful,” Sawyer said. “But it’s an obligation that you come out and let us know” where they are. He said there was no indication that any prison employees were involved in the escape. No suspensions had been issued, he said. Duong was being held without bond since last month on charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm and other charges. Tieu had been held since October 2013 on $1 million bond on charges of murder, attempted murder and shooting at an inhabited dwelling. His case is believed to be gang-related.A $200,000.00 reward is reportedly being offered for information leading to the recapture of the three escapees, who are described as armed and dangerous. If you see these suspects do not approach , but call 911.

Resolve to Adopt Cost-Cutting Shopping Habits in the New Year The start of the New Year is often a time for resolutions and improvements to your daily lifestyle. While many people vow to lose weight or take a big trip, others might focus on trying to save money in the year to come. There are some easy ways to start saving now and develop smart shopping habits for the remainder of 2016. Plan Weekly/Monthly Meals Instead of impulsively buying produce and other perishable items while grocery shopping, try to make a plan for all your meals that week or month. By only buying what you need, you can save money at the grocery store and limit the opportunity for food to go to waste. Private Brands Another simple way to save money this year is to make the switch to private or store brands. Many items can be purchased at a fraction of the name brand price, and there is often little or no difference in product quality. For instance, Dollar General offers many private brand items at affordable prices with a satisfaction
guarantee, which can help you to cut back on expenses without sacrificing quality. Digital Coupons You can score truly great deals by clipping coupons, but doing so can be a time consuming process.
OC MUSIC CENTER
New digital alternatives can make the process less painstaking. One example is Dollar General’s digital coupon program, which lets users create a profile where they can pin the coupons most relevant to them. You can have instant savings on your
cell phone or computer for items you use the most, without ever touching a newspaper or pair of scissors. This new year, resolve to make a few small changes to your shopping habits that can create big savings in the long run! (StatePoint)

South Coast Repertory’s Pinocchio Clowns Around in the Theatre for Young Audiences Series The tale of the naughty puppet hoping to become a real boy gets an infusion of music, clowning and fun when South Coast Repertory’s Theatre for Young Audiences series presents Pinocchio by Greg Banks, based on the classic story by Carlo Collodi. Pinocchio runs Feb. 5-21 on the Julianne Argyros Stage and is directed by Jeremy Aluma. Tickets are on sale at www.scr.org. Pinocchio will never be a “real boy” until he goes to school—and stays out of trouble. For SCR’s production of Pinocchio, Aluma will be able to use his clowning background, along with his cast who also are members
of his troupe. “I really liked the way Jeremy approached the challenges and pleasures of Robin Hood,” said Associate Artistic Director John Glore. “He knows this kind of theatre like the back of his hand. He and the cast will deliver a really enjoyable show for our audiences, one that will appeal to both kids and the grown-ups who accompany them.” The cast for Pinocchio includes Tyler Bremer, Jennifer Carroll, Joe DeSoto, Dave Honigman and Kevin Klein. Driving with dogs: Tips to keep everyone in the car safe It’s only natural for man’s best friend to stay close by his master’s side, but for dog owners who drive frequently, bringing Fido along for the ride can be risky. The problem is particularly worrisome for older drivers; a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham showed that for people 70 years and older, crash rates were higher among those who frequently drove with pets in the car. But for many drivers, leaving precious pets behind isn’t an option. The best compromise is to find solutions that will get you from point A to point B without compromising the safety of human or animal passengers. Distracted driving is a growing concern and a loose pet in the car certainly numbers among the potential hazards that can take your eyes - and mind - off the road and lead to accidents. While older drivers might not be as likely to be distracted by texting or smartphone surfing, even those who have spent many years navigating the roads need to honestly assess how having a pet in the car can divert their attention away
from the road. To stay safe on the road when Fido is with you, remember these tips: * Don’t allow pets in the front seats. Having a pet sit on your lap is obviously distracting, but if he’s in the front passenger seat, the problem can be just as bad. In the front seats, your pet is more likely to be within your line of sight and obstruct your view of the road. An unrestrained dog in the front seats could also be easily injured if you have to slam on the brakes or swerve, or are hit from behind. The force with which airbags deploy also poses a safety hazard for dogs in the front seat - if you’re in an accident and they inflate and hit your dog, he could easily sustain an injury. * Create separation. There are a variety of pet barriers on the market that can keep your pet from moving between the front and back seats of your car. Installing a barrier will help keep your pet out of your way and diminish concerns about him being propelled forward in case you have to make a sudden stop. * Restrain your pet. There are a number of options for pet restraints
in your vehicle. Pet seatbelts and car seats will help keep a dog safely in place. Keeping a crate in the car is also a good option. Make sure it’s secured and large enough so that he can stand up, turn around and comfortably sit or lay down. Add a soft pad in the bottom of the crate and it might just become your pet’s favorite new way to travel. * Brush up on your driving skills. Today’s driving environment is probably very different than it was when you first got your license. A refresher course, like those offered by AARP Driver Safety, is an ideal
way to ensure that your skills are up to date. Brushing up on defensive driving techniques and the essential rules of the road will help keep everyone in your car safe and you may even qualify for a multi-year automobile insurance discount from your insurance company (check with your agent for details). AARP Driver Safety courses are available in a classroom or online setting, in both English and Spanish. Pets are important members of the family, so it’s only right that drivers consider their safety, just as they would for any other passenger.

FINAL STEEL BEAM H OISTE D TO T H E ROOF OF LA D ERA RAN C H ’ S NE W EST MULTIUSE FA C ILITY More Than 100 Community Leaders, Sign Beam at Topping Out Ceremony Last November An enormous construction crane groaned as it hoisted the final steel beam to the top of a $35 million solar-powered multiuse facility in Ladera Ranch, Calif., at what is called a “topping out” ceremony last November. Applause swept through the crowd of onlookers who gathered to celebrate the milestone event for the facility, which is expected to open by summer 2016. The 700 lb. beam is covered with signatures, including those from young athletes who will have a new team home at the complex’s Ladera Sports Center. “This facility will be the Staple Center for the training of young volleyball and basketball athletes. This is a place where athletes are going to train Monday through Friday to hone their athletic skills. In addition, on weekends we’re going to have some of the most competitive basketball and volleyball tournaments in the country,” said H. Michael Schwartz, CEO and chairman of SmartStop Asset Management, who designed, financed and is developing the facility. “Ladera Ranch is perfectly suited for those types of tournaments due to its proximity to San Diego, Los Angeles and, in addition, the beach.” The approximately 120,000-squarefoot complex, located at 2 Terrace Road In Ladera Ranch, Calif., will include a 63,400-square-foot gymnasium—which will be open to the public—with eight full-sized basketball/volleyball courts, student study rooms, a 3,380-square-foot strength and conditioning space as well as gym offices. In addition, the facility will house a 42,000-squarefoot storage facility with approximately 230 units operated by ExtraSpace Storage; a private fitness center; and more than 15,000+ square feet of office space for SmartStop Asset Management expanding headquarters. Athletic leagues and clubs in South Orange County are especially excited about the sports center,

which will allow teams to hold all practices, games and tournaments under one roof. Five different organizations already have signed long-term agreements to rent the facility, claiming almost 80 percent of the weekday capacity. “I’ve been in basketball community in South Orange County for a while, and there is just no space for anyone to play basketball here,” said Ladera Sports Center CEO Steve Williams, who will manage day-to-day activities at the center, including team planning and rentals. “Our goal was to try to build our own facility that incorporated the best of all worlds. So we looked around the country at all different kinds of facilities and put all the good into one facility. So the kids will have uninterrupted practices, be on the same court every day all year round. This sports center is going to be a great service to the community.” Organizations committed to using the facility include: Team Nikos Basketball Academy, Ladera Ranch National Junior Basketball, Little Rookies Youth Sports, San Clemente Volleyball Club, and Ladera Ranch Strength and Conditioning. The new gymnasium will have air conditioning and noise decibel reduction systems, superior wood flooring to absorb high impacts and ceiling-mounted basketball hoops and volleyball nets. Live webcastenabled cameras on each court will allow parents and sports team scouts to watch games or practices remotely or buy recorded DVDs. The gym also will offer a café with healthy food and snacks. “The technology we are installing here is something you are not going to see in any youth sports facility anywhere else in California or maybe the entire country,” Schwartz said. “If I’m traveling, I’m going to be able to watch my kid play ball whether I’m in D.C. or Russia, anywhere in the world, on my iPad or iPhone.” Located close to the 241 Toll Road and I-5 freeway near Crown

Valley Parkway, the facility will have approximately 300 parking spaces under and around the building with active security cameras and a number of electrical vehicle charging stations. The gym area will be available for club team practices, youth and adult leagues and tournaments, youth camps and clinics as well as charity and community events. SmartStop Asset Management is currently seeking sponsors for the Ladera Sports Center from national brands and local businesses. Opportunities include naming rights, court branding, gymnasium signage and online promotions. In addition, Ladera Sports Center is now accepting reservations for weekend tournaments and week day rentals. For more information, please call 714202-6661 or e-mail sportscenter@ antonpr.com. Community Mountain Bike Team Is Geared Up and Ready to Roll
By: Tina Catalano Ladera Ranch is excited to welcome a mountain bike team designed for middle school boys and girls. The team geared up in December 2015 and the season will continue through May 2016. This non-profit organization offers 6th – 8th grade riders the opportunity to develop skills and foster a passion for mountain biking. Ladera Ranch MTB is affiliated with NICA - National Interscholastic Cycling Association and SoCal Cycling League. Rich Catalano, coach for the
team, is thrilled to be part of this new program. He has been riding for over 15 years and is committed to mountain biking and the many personal challenges it offers. Ladera Ranch is the ideal place for learning to ride. There are various levels and difficulties of trails in and around the community. Ladera is the perfect training ground to teach new riders the basic skills of mountain bike riding and encourage more experienced riders to progress to the next level. The Ladera Ranch Mountain Bike
Team holds group rides 2 to 3 times per week. Practices include skills training and trail rides. Examples of skills training are shifting, downhill braking, proper climbing skills, negotiating challenging turns, downhill and uphill positioning techniques, navigating terrains, and much more. Trail rides include the Ladera Ranch Trail, Craftsman Trail, Sienna Botanica Trail, Yukon Riley Botanica Trail, and Narrow Canyon Trail. The race season begins March 2016 and consists of 4 middle school races.
This is a crucial time for mountain bike teams in Southern California claims Coach Rich. Many high schools in California and across the nation currently have mountain bike teams. By starting a middle school team in Ladera Ranch the goal is to generate momentum for mountain bike teams at the high school level. Registration is open and there is time to join the team. If you have a middle-school aged child that is interested, contact Rich Catalano at laderamtb@gmail.com.

Working Wardrobes Cheers 25 years with a Gala to Remember! Working Wardrobes celebrated its 25th Anniversary in style with a sold out crowd of 350 for a very special evening at the Hotel Irvine. “Cheers to 25 Years” will be an event and evening that I will cherish forever” said Jerri Rosen, CEO and Founder of the organization. Guests enjoyed delicious food and drinks, live music and dancing, and an exciting auction. All proceeds from the event directly benefited the important programs and services at Working Wardrobes dedicated to empowering clients to experience the dignity of work. The evening started off with an incredible line up of over 25 silent auction baskets for guests to bid on while enjoying appetizers and cocktails. A few of the popular auction items included an autographed basketball by LA Lakers legend, Gail Goodrich, paired with suite tickets to a game; an in-home wine tasting certificate including 12 different bottles of high end wine; a romantic weekend getaway to Santa Barbara; and Wienershnitzel Wagon private party for 50 guests. Keeping the excitement rolling, the enthusiastic auctioneer, Zack Krone, kicked off the live auction portion of the night by offering guests a box of nothing!! Believe it or not…this box of nothing raised $2,000! The live auction was a bidding frenzy as folks raised their paddles to some amazing items up for grabs. Lucky winners walked away with spectacular auction items, including a trip to South Africa; a 5-night stay in Paris; skydiving packages with the Navy SEALS; weekend use of a Maserati; exquisite diamonds; luxury restaurant date nights, and more! A highlight of the evening was hearing the touching stories of two Working Wardrobes clients Andrea and Bill who both faced incredibly difficult circumstances, and who today are happily employed and living successful lives. Dinner was served - folks enjoyed a New York steak in garlic truffle butter with sautéed asparagus and potatoes au gratin. Guests had a choice of two delicious desserts – double chocolate mousse cake or pumpkin cheesecake with raspberry sauce. Opportunity items were up for grabs as well – guests purchased tickets to hopefully win. Three lucky winners walked away with a weekend stay at La Quinta Resort; an Apple Watch and iPad Mini; and a VIP experience for 4 at The Magic Castle. Afterwards, everyone rocked out to the tunes from the band “Best of Everything”. Working Wardrobes guiding philosophy is a belief that people are more powerful than the barriers they face and that all of their clients share the common desire to achieve success. Clients who find and maintain employment are able to establish personal responsibility and self-esteem and become productive members of society. The strongest measure of their success is hearing a client say “I got the job!” Working Wardrobes is also an advocate of social enterprise, operating The Hanger resale boutiques in Tustin and Laguna Niguel, as well as four Outlet shops in Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Garden Grove, and Laguna Hills. Proceeds from the five shops benefit the clients served by Working Wardrobes, making up 37% of the organization’s funding. More information can be found at www. workingwardrobes.org. Page 12

Five simple steps to being a great pet owner
Brushing your teeth and getting dressed in the morning are among the daily routines that are second nature to humans. But you may not always remember that your pets need regular care too - like avoiding potentially harmful table scraps, being protected from pesky fleas and ticks, keeping the sensitive pads of their paws safe from everchanging weather conditions, and getting regular veterinary care. The following are five, simple steps to help keep your pets healthy and happy from Cristiano von Simson, DVM, MBA, director of Veterinary Technical Services, Bayer HealthCare, Animal Health Division, and proud dog owner. 1. No table scraps What can be better than a gathering with family and friends around good food - whether a barbecue, the cornucopia of a Thanksgiving feast, or all the wings and nachos that accompany a big Sunday football game? According to Dr. von Simson, although you may be tempted - and your dog or cat may beg - remember to stop yourself before giving your pet a table scrap, leftover or bone. “You may make him happy for the moment, but it could create serious digestive problems for him in the long run,” he says. “So instead of sharing human food, give him an appropriate pet treat.” 2. Pest prevention You don’t like to be bitten by pesky bugs - well, neither does your four-legged friend. While you may know that fleas and ticks may cause misery and disease for your pets, you may not know that these parasites can be active year-round, waiting for their chance to attack and feed on your dog or cat. Continuous protection against fleas and ticks is, therefore, an essential part of pet ownership. But it’s not always easy to remember to use a flea and tick preventive each month. See what several pet owners think about trying to remember
to keep their pets protected at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=7rNCvUgQprQ. “Now, you can avoid the hassle of remembering to apply a monthly flea and tick topical by using a convenient flea and tick collar that offers the performance you expect from a monthly topical, but in an easy-to-use form that kills fleas and repels and kills ticks on cats or dogs for eight months,” says Dr. von Simson. 3. Protect their paws Do you wear shoes when jogging on hot asphalt a no-brainer, right? What about boots when it snows? But did you ever stop to think that your pet’s feet need protection from the elements, too? It is important to keep the pads of their feet cool in sweltering weather, which is why walks in the evening or early morning are best. And during winter, be sure to protect their feet from snow; sled dogs wear protective booties for a reason. 4. Don’t forget the water A summer run on the beach, a fall trek through the woods and blazing your own snow trail are all activities that not only make you thirsty, but your pet, as well. So when you pack a water bottle for the day, don’t forget to bring your pet’s water bowl, too. “Your pet will be grateful for a drink of clean water, not to mention properly hydrated,” says Dr. von Simson. 5. Get an annual check-up Just as annual check-ups are essential for keeping us healthy, regular visits to the veterinarian are vital to the health and well-being of your pet. You may think, “My pet looks fine, and has no symptoms, so why should I take her to the vet?” But since your pet can’t really talk, she can’t tell you when she is ill, especially if the “she” is a cat. In fact, according to the Bayer Veterinary Care Usage Study III: Feline Findings, a nationally representative study of feline owners, 52 percent of cat owners indicated they had not taken their
cats to the veterinarian in the past year. “Because cats age differently than humans - with the first two years of a cat’s life equal to 24 years of a human’s life, and each successive year equivalent to four human years - annual examinations are essential to helping keep cats healthy and preventing potentially serious disease,” says Dr. von Simson. Remember, pets need us, just as much as we need them. For more tips on pet care, visit www. petparents.com.
THE INCOMPARABLE BERNADETTE PETERS BRINGS HER ILLUSTRIOUS VOICE TO PACIFIC SYMPHONY FOR A SMOKIN’ HOT “VALENTINE’S DAY” WEEKEND CELEBRATION OF BROADWAY HITS AND MORE Grammy-, Golden Globe- Drama Desk- and three-time Tony Awardwinning actress and singer Bernadette Peters—known for her raw talent and ability to knock the socks off an audience with her glorious voice— joins Pacific Symphony just in time for Valentine’s Day weekend! The ageless Peters, who boasts a decades-long successful career on the Broadway, film and television stage, recently starred in the critically acclaimed Broadway production of “Follies” after a highly successful run at the Kennedy Center, and can be seen in the Golden-Globe winning TV series, “Mozart in the Jungle.” Recent hit performances (backed by orchestras) have included Peters turning up the heat for Peggy Lee’s “Fever”; Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “There is Nothin’ Like a Dame” (from “South Pacific”); “Children Will Listen” and “No One is Alone” (from “Into the Woods”); “In Buddy’s Eyes” and “Losing My Mind” (from her turn as Sally Durant Plummer in the 2011 revival of “Follies”); and “Let Me Entertain You” (from the Grammy Award-winning Broadway cast album “Gypsy”), among many, many others. “As an actress, singer, comedienne and all-round warming presence, Bernadette Peters has no peer in the musical theater right now.”—Frank Rich, The New York Times Peters and her instantly recognizable voice join Pacific Symphony, led by Principal Pops Page 14
Conductor Richard Kaufman, on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 12-13, at 8 p.m., in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Tickets are $45-$200. For more information or to purchase tickets call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org. The first half of the concert features Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” (from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”), John Barry’s “Flying Over Africa” (from the film, “Out of Africa”), Max Steiner’s “Three Dances (from “Gone with the Wind”), John Williams’ “If We Were In Love” (from “Yes, Giorgio”) and Marc Shaiman’s “Tango” (from “Addams Family Values”). Peters, who has dazzled audiences and critics with her performances on stage and television, in concert and on recordings, takes the spotlight for the second half. Her stunning career led to her Broadway role in the critically acclaimed production of “Follies,” after a highly successful run at the Kennedy Center. Prior to that, she starred in the Tony Awardwinning masterpiece, “A Little Night Music” opposite Elaine Stritch. She recently received her third Tony, The Isabelle Stevenson Award, which acknowledges an individual from the theater community who has made a substantial contribution of time and effort on behalf of one or more humanitarian, social service or charitable organizations. She devotes her time and talents to numerous events that benefit Broadway Cares/

Equity Fights AIDS, in addition to her “pet project” Broadway Barks! In 2003, Peters received her seventh Tony Award nomination for her electrifying portrayal of Momma Rose in Sam Mendes’ record-breaking Broadway revival of “Gypsy,” and her brilliant performance was captured on the Grammy awardwinning cast recording. “Bernadette Peters is a revelation!” The New York Times declared of her star turn in the show. Peters’ Angel Records CD, “Sondheim, Etc., Etc.: Bernadette Peters Live at Carnegie Hall (The Rest of It),” features her historic 1996 solo debut at Carnegie Hall. The concert was a benefit for Gay Men’s Health Crisis. This performance was repeated in “Bernadette Peters in Concert,” her London solo debut at Royal Festival Hall, which later was telecast on PBS and is available on DVD. Peters received both the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for her critically acclaimed performance in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical “Song and Dance.” In June 1999, she earned her second Tony Award, her third Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award for her portrayal of Annie Oakley in one of Broadway’s most popular musicals, the Tony Award-winning revival of “Annie Get Your Gun.” Peters also received Tony nominations for her work in the 1992 musical, “The Goodbye Girl”; Stephen Sondheim’s Pulitzer
Bernadette Peters Prize-winning musical “Sunday in the Park with George”; the Jerry Herman/Gower Champion ode to the movies, “Mack and Mabel”; and the Leonard Bernstein/Comden and Green musical “On the Town.” Additionally, Peters earned a Drama Desk nomination for her portrayal of the Witch in Sondheim’s “Into the Woods.” While Peters is best known for her work in the theater, she also boasts an impressive list of television credits including her recent guest appearance on NBC’s series SMASH. A performer of amazing versatility, Peters has lit up the silver screen in 17 films throughout her distinguished career. She received a Golden Globe Award for her performance in “Pennies from Heaven.”

FAMILY FEATURES
t has been said that distance makes the heart grow fonder. When the demands of life make it tough to get away, you can actually find your escape closer to home – right in your home, even – by carving out a corner to create a retreat just for you. A room dedicated to you and all of your hobbies or personal interests can serve as a welcome escape from the real world if only for a little while. These tips make it simple to get started planning your big escape with ideas centered on some of the most common specialty rooms, as well as a solution for fitting the ideas into a smaller home. Create a space for crafts. If you find your frazzled senses defraying with a little threading therapy, look to create a space that celebrates this pastime. With the rise in popularity of websites such as Pinterest, which feature a plethora of DIY ideas, you’ll have ample opportunity to distract your mind and busy your hands. A room designed to let you explore your crafty side can help prevent the kitchen or dining room table from becoming a creative center or wrapping station around the holidays, and allows those areas to remain dedicated to family, food and friendship. It doesn’t have to be just for crafts, though. It can also be a place to settle down with a good book and just relax. Keep your space clutter-free and ready to enjoy with a craft room such as those designed by Wellborn Cabinet, Inc., which can feature spacious storage and expansive countertops, providing ample space to create projects that help decorate both the interior and exterior of the home, or simply to unwind and relieve stress. Don’t dismiss cars, bars and sports. If a room free of frou-frou decor where you can just unwind is more your ticket, a man cave may be just the answer. Man caves come in all shapes and sizes, from rowdy dens for sports fanatics to workshops decked out with the tools of your trade. Even if decorating isn’t your thing, look for ways to make the place your own, whether you display trophies from your hunting excursions or decor emblazoned with the logos of your favorite sports teams. This is the room that allows you to relish in the hobbies you enjoy most. If there isn’t a spare room or basement available, the garage can serve as a good alternative. With specific spots for tools and lawn care products – or even that car or motorcycle collection – the garage can meet the same needs as a more traditional man cave. When two rooms become one. Whether space limitations prohibit separate quarters, or you simply prefer to share your hobby time with a partner, you can create a specialty room that accommodates both your interests with a little creativity and planning. Working as a team, you can find the right accessories and storage to design a getaway for two. For example, a creative room from Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. offers more than 600 door styles, wood types and combinations. The result is a chance to combine two rooms, such as the man cave and craft room, for a sanctuary you can build and enjoy together. Find more inspiration for personal spaces and tools to maximize your space and storage at wellborn.com.
Accessorize Your Personal Space
If creating a space all your own feels like a daunting project, these clever tips from the experts at Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. will help get you closer to a room you can get ready to enjoy: n Charging Solutions: Install a charging station in a drawer for phones or other handheld devices. Power and docking stations can easily hide devices and ports yet keep them readily accessible. n Accessory Racks and Holders: Hooks for tools or coats keep them off of other furniture, including countertops where they can pile up and detract from your workspace. Cubby inserts and baskets help keep your things organized on shelves. n Sliding Shelves: Sliding shelves, drawers and baskets let you organize tools or crafting accessories while providing easy access to the items you’ve tucked away.

for sale excludes all funds held on account by the property receiver, if applicable. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call In Source Logic at 702-659-7766 for information regarding the Trustee’s Sale or visit the Internet Web site address listed below for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, CA08001800-13-1. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Resolve to Learn More about Wine in 2016 Have you always wanted to learn about wine? In 2016, consider expanding your knowledge of wine as a great New Year’s resolution. Christopher Silva, CEO of St. Francis Winery in Sonoma, CA, offers the following tips for wine newbies and enthusiasts alike to get started on getting to know wine better in 2016: • Join a club. A wine club, either through specifically one winery or company that features an international selection, is a great way to have a variety of hand-picked, quality wines delivered to your doorstep. Whether you decide to stick with one varietal or try many, a wine club can cater to your wishes or help you expand your horizons wisely. • Take notes. Sipping on some vino? Record your impressions of the flavors in a “wine diary.” Remember to clear your palate first with something neutral, such as crackers. You’ll know whether to revisit the wine in the future, as well as learn to become more mindful of what you’re drinking. • Seek variety. For a broad overview of wine, it’s important to become familiar with the major varietals, which for white wines include Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and for red wines, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfadel. Here are three new wines to try this year: Versatile as an aperitif or with a variety of seafood and light meats, St. Francis Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc 2013 is a refreshing vintage wine with a clean, crisp structure and aromas of citrus, kiwi and mango with a touch of lime. Next up, St. Francis Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 has a rich, complex flavor and
body. The wine’s firm structure, generous tannins and depth of color complement classic aromas and flavors of black currant, cassis, dusty cocoa and tobacco. This wine is an excellent companion to aged blue cheese, braised or grilled beef and roast pork with fruit. Looking for an American classic? Try Zinfandel and St. Francis Sonoma County Old Vines Zinfandel 2012, which is made from dry farmed old vines to ensure concentrated flavor. Aromas of boysenberry, clove and cinnamon are followed
by flavors of mixed berries, red licorice, tobacco leaf and mulling spices. Pair with barbecued ribs and pasta Bolognese. • Travel. Go right to the source and consider planning a trip to wine country. Many vineyards host tours, have tasting rooms and offer education programs. A winery is also a great place to find top notch wine pairings. By resolving to explore the world of wine, you can make everything from casual weeknight meals to festive parties, more delicious in 2016. (StatePoint)
