Governor Brown Takes Action to Protect Oceans
Taking action to combat climate change and help protect California’s oceans, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. called on President Barack Obama to use his authority to permanently prohibit new offshore oil and gas leasing in federal waters off the coast of California, signed an agreement with U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell to help expand offshore renewable energy development and joined global leaders to launch the International Alliance to Combat Ocean Acidification. “Climate change degrades our oceans and coastline,” said Governor Brown at a meeting of the International Alliance to Combat Ocean Acidification in Coronado. “Today, California is taking additional steps to reduce ocean acidity, boost renewable energy and prevent further coastal oil and gas drilling.” Stopping Offshore Oil and Gas Drilling In a letter sent to President Obama, Governor Brown called on the administration to use its authority under Section 12(a) of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act to permanently withdraw federal waters off the coast of California from new offshore oil and gas leasing and guarantee that future oil and gas drilling in these waters is prohibited. “Clearly, large new oil and gas reserves would be inconsistent with our overriding imperative to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and combat the devastating impacts of climate change,” Governor Brown wrote. “Now is the time to make permanent the protection of our ocean waters and beaches from new oil and gas drilling.” Boosting Offshore Renewable Energy Governor Brown also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell to renew and expand a joint commitment to develop more renewable power, including offshore clean energy. Under the agreement, California and the U.S. Department of the Interior will
coordinate the environmental review of potential marine renewable energy projects, such as offshore wind and wave energy, continue to identify offshore areas for potential projects, and update permitting guidance for these projects. Today’s MOU builds on the creation of a California Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Task Force launched earlier this year. Addressing Ocean Acidification Additionally, Governor Brown joined Washington State Governor Jay Inslee, Oregon Governor Kate Brown, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Chile in the United States Patricio Utreras and Consul General of France in San Francisco Emmanuel Lebrun-Damiens today to launch a new partnership of jurisdictions around the world committed to protecting coastal communities and economies from the threat of rising ocean acidity, called the International Alliance to Combat Ocean Acidification. The ocean absorbs a third of the carbon dioxide that humans release into the atmosphere, which raises the water’s acidity and harms sea creatures that are vital food sources for marine life. The rising levels of poisonous ocean acidity, along with warming waters, also damage coral reefs, dissolve oyster shells and harm marine fisheries around the world. The oceans have become 30 percent more acidic since scientists began taking measurements, and the average acidity of the surface ocean is projected to double over pre-industrial levels by the end of this century. California is combatting ocean acidification through a number of landmark policies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gases. This announcement builds on the ongoing work of the California Ocean Protection Council, which has also joined with other states to help address ocean acidification. Earlier this year, Governor Brown signed legislation to support this work and

Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. develop projects, in coordination with other states, that reduce carbon dioxide levels through marine habitat conservation and restoration. C a l i f o r n i a ’s L e a d e r s h i p on Climate Change California is playing a world-leading role in setting aggressive climate goals, broadening collaboration among subnational leaders and taking action to reduce climate pollutants. In recent weeks, Governor Brown issued a joint release with the governors of Oregon and Washington and the premier of British Columbia reaffirming their commitment to climate action at the close of COP22. The Governor also announced 29 new members to the Under2 Coalition, an international climate pact formed by California and Baden-Württemberg, Germany among cities, states and countries to limit the increase in global average temperature to below 2 degrees Celsius, the level of potentially catastrophic consequences. A total of 165 jurisdictions have now joined the coalition representing more than a billion people and $25.7 trillion in combined GDP – more than one-third of the global economy. In September, California took bold action to advance its climate goals, establishing the most ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction targets in North America and the nation’s toughest restrictions on destructive super pollutants. The Governor also signed legislation that directs cap-andtrade funds to greenhouse gas reducing programs which benefit disadvantaged communities, support clean transportation and protect natural ecosystems. This action builds on landmark legislation the Governor signed in October 2015 to generate half of the state’s electricity from renewable
sources by 2030 and double the rate of energy efficiency savings in California buildings. Governor Brown has also committed to reducing today’s petroleum use in cars and trucks by up to 50 percent within the next 15 years; make heating fuels cleaner; and manage farm and rangelands, forests and wetlands so they can store carbon. Over the past year and a half, the Governor has traveled to the United Nations headquarters in New York, the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris, France, the Vatican in Italy and the Climate Summit of the Americas in Toronto, Canada to call on other leaders to join California in the fight against climate change. Governor Brown also joined an unprecedented alliance of heads of state, city and state leaders – convened by the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund – to urge countries and companies around the globe to put a price on carbon. These efforts to broaden collaboration among subnational leaders build on a number of other international climate change agreements with leaders from the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Mexico, China, North America, Japan, Israel, Peru and Chile and Governor Brown’s efforts to gather hundreds of world-renowned researchers and scientists around a groundbreaking call to action – called the consensus statement – which translates key scientific climate findings from disparate fields into one unified document. The impacts of climate change are already being felt in California and will disproportionately impact the state’s most vulnerable populations. Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. State Capitol Building, Sacramento, CA 95814

Simplify Last-Minute Holiday Shopping
Few things elicit panic like getting caught shopping for gifts at the last minute with the holidays just around the corner. If you’ve waited until the last few weeks before Christmas to get started, you’re not alone. With shopping left to do and such a short amount of time to do it, snagging exactly what everyone on your list (assuming you’ve already started your list, at least) wants at a price that won’t break the bank will require some serious creativity and resourcefulness. Before you resort to panic mode, take advantage of these tips to help you wrap up your holiday shopping. Create or Refine Your List Put a list together of whom you still have to buy for, what you plan to get for them, how much you plan to spend on each person and any gifts already purchased, so as not to overbuy. By setting a budget when creating your list, you can monitor overall spending, especially as deals may be harder to find the closer you get to Christmas. Go to stores with your list in hand and budget in mind, and stick to it. Wandering through stores or the mall without a plan can lead to impulse purchases and cost you precious time. Set a Time Limit Once you’ve made your list and set a time to go shopping – perhaps right as stores are opening or closer to closing time to avoid other last-minute shoppers during peak hours – set a time limit to make each purchase. Shopping with time limits decreases the chances of making impulse purchases or going over budget. When shopping online, limit yourself to 20 minutes or less to research, identify the best deal and make the purchase. Shop Online Shopping online is fast, easy and allows you to comparison shop all at once. Make sure to research gifts before you purchase, as online retailers outside of your favorites may be offering special incentives, coupon codes or free shipping. If you can’t find free shipping, some stores offer
free in-store pickup or free shipping for spending over a certain amount. Ordering online also allows you to avoid the stress of crowds, impulse buy items near the register and other shopping pitfalls, such as dining out, that can muddle your shopping budget. You can also often ship the gift directly to your intended recipient. Opt for Gift Cards If you can’t find the right size or color in the gift you’re looking for, it won’t ship in time for the holidays or you’ve completely run out of time, consider giving gift cards instead. While it can seem impersonal, giving a gift card to a favorite retailer, restaurant or to partake in an activity is often better than the alternative. Retail sites and wholesalers even offer discounted gift cards you can pay less than face value for. To dress it up a little, add a personal touch, like accompanying a coffee shop gift card with a new mug, or give the illusion of a larger gift by wrapping it in a larger box. With these tips, you can mark everyone off your list with time to spare, and nobody will even know you procrastinated. Find more holiday shopping tips at elivingtoday.com. 5 Tips for Easy Holiday Shipping It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and holiday gift-giving and receiving is at the top of everyone’s to-do list. There are several simple steps you can take to make those deliveries a little easier. Here are five ways you can keep the holidays merry and bright, and experience the excitement of making (and receiving) special deliveries this holiday season. 1. Pack like a pro (or rely on one). Be sure your packages arrive intact by using the proper materials. Use sturdy, corrugated boxes as well as foam packaging peanuts and bubble cushioning to protect your gifts. Allow at least 2 inches on all sides of the items being packed, including the top and bottom. If you’re uncertain or need assistance, The UPS Store Certified Packing Experts are trained in packaging techniques to conquer any gift – whether it’s oddly shaped,
freshly baked, wrapped or unwrapped. 2. Secure delivery locations. If you’re expecting deliveries of online purchases or gifts, you may hesitate to leave the house and enjoy holiday outings and family activities. Some companies allow you to redirect packages to a neighbor or a nearby business so you can rest assured your packages are in good hands. 3. Ask for a guarantee. After spending precious time selecting each gift, you need assurance and peace of mind that your efforts won’t be for naught. For example, The UPS Store offers the Pack and Ship Guarantee, a service that covers lost or damaged items. Some providers even offer coverage for the cost of packing materials, service and shipping. 4. Use tracking tools. The holiday season is no time to wonder when or if your package will arrive. Using a trackable delivery service helps ensure you can monitor your package’s progress and receive an alert when it is successfully delivered. 5. Ensure gifts arrive before Santa. Timing is key when it comes to holiday shipping. Mark the calendar with these shipping deadlines so all gifts arrive just in time. For domestic delivery for Christmas by Friday, Dec. 23, ship: UPS Next Day Air by Thursday, Dec. 22 UPS 2nd Day Air by Wednesday, Dec. 21 UPS 3 Day Select by Monday, Dec. 19 To find a shipping location near you, visit theupsstore.com and find The UPS Store on YouTube for additional holiday tips. 5 fall fashion finds that blend comfort and style As Mother Nature exchanges her green attire for endless hues of yellow, orange and red, you too may be thinking it’s time to spruce up your wardrobe. This fall, the leading trends are blending fashion with comfort to create eye-catching styles that move with ease through all your autumn adventures. As the leaves turn and the chill sets in, make sure your closet is stocked with the top five fashion finds of the season. Thin and thick, scarves for everyone Store your statement necklaces for next season because fall 2016 is prime for scarves of all shapes and sizes. Chunky knits are a classic among both men and women, with infinity scarves bridging the gap between dainty and daring. To add further dimension, skinny scarves are a new addition for this season. Thin scarves of silky material are being layered, wrapped and knotted to create a one-of-a-kind look guaranteed to catch a glance. Long-hair scarves or silk belts are ideal for experimenting with this fresh trend. A comfortable twist on the skinny jean When fall arrives women from coast to coast don skinny jeans with boots and booties. Until now, this
unforgettable look came at the price of comfort and mobility. Enter the Lee Dream Jean. Designed to look like a skinny jean on the outside while feeling like a yoga pant inside, you can wear these jeans for any fall adventure - whether stretching for the highest apple or lounging with a pumpkin spice latte. The patent-pending Dream Jean wraps you in softness with a t-shirtlike lining, and the stretchy, skinny fit ensures you’ll never want to take them off. Slim-fit jeans for men For fall 2016, men’s jeans are seeing a slimmer cut than in previous seasons, and more men are looking for styles with stretch to achieve this look. The Lee Slim Fit embraces both elements to produce a pant that looks and feels great, whether you’re tailgating with friends or picking pumpkins with the family. The slim, tailored style fits closer to the body for a great fall look, while the Active Comfort Denim technology allows the denim to flex and move with ease to keep up with your every move. Fabulous fall footwear Beyond boots, fall footwear is getting a sensible yet stylish update for fall 2016. One of the leading shoe trends of the season is the classic
mule. Making its comeback, the mule blends the best of a loafer with the ease of a clog. Slip these on with your favorite jeans for a chic look for the office or a weekend get-together. Mules offer the ideal way to polish a casual look and create a beautiful blend of high and low fashion. Pops of color As Mother Nature delights the eye with radiant hues across the landscape, you may feel inspired to add pops of color to your fall wardrobe. Just because it’s autumn, however, doesn’t mean you’re limited to just crimson and sienna. Fall is a season
alive with life, so integrate your favorite bold colors in any way you can. If you opt for colorful pants to bring life to your outfit, try one of the eleven colors available in Lee’s Essential Chinos, including perfect fall shades like Moss Green and Blush. Pink, in fact, is trending for fall, so rock those pants and pull that raspberry fedora out of storage. It’s no longer relegated for spring alone. Fall 2016 is unlike any other when it comes to fashion. By blending comfort and style, you’re sure to find a favorite look to keep up with your every move this season. (BPT)

Simple solution to maximize your car’s performance Are you the type of driver who pushes the accelerator a little harder on the curves of a back-country road? Are you a person who smiles as they approach a new terrain or road condition you’ve never conquered before? If so, you’re a performance seeker. A person who is constantly pushing themselves to prove that they are driver enough. The performance driver never wants to lose the feeling of adrenaline as they push their vehicle to the max, but as the seasons change, so do the road conditions and the challenges drivers face. We sat down with X-Games athlete, professional race car driver, professional stunt car driver and BFGoodrich(R) Tires ambassador, Andrew Comrie-Picard, or ACP, to better understand the challenges associated with wet weather driving, how modern tires can help prevent the loss of traction and skidding, and how they make the overall driving experience more fun - regardless of the season. Keeping contact with the road The biggest danger with wet weather driving is how unexpected the road conditions and hazards can be. As the temperatures rise and seasonal showers pick up, standing water in puddles, still-cool spring temperatures, and the potential for showers to lift oil to the surface of the road can all compromise traction and
lead to a skid or a possible accident. “Having the right tires is the number one thing you can do to prevent hydroplaning without losing performance often drowned out during the rainy season,” says Andrew Comrie-Picard (ACP). “The proper tread depth and tire design can make all the difference in your vehicle’s ability to shed water, while increasing control on the road.” Until recently, a tire with exceptional wet and dry traction in both high and low ambient temperatures was a dream of tire engineers and drivers alike. But the BFGoodrich(R) g-Force(TM) COMP-2(TM) A/S tire puts the best of both worlds in one tire. When tested against the leading competitors, it stopped up to 15 feet shorter on wet roads and 5 feet shorter on dry roads. Its superior traction isn’t just good for braking in both dry and wet conditions, it also helps your vehicle accelerate faster, ensuring you don’t forfeit your vehicle’s performance to Mother Nature. What if you hydroplane? ACP has driven in all types of conditions across terrains all over the globe - including a recent expedition down an ice road onto the frozen Arctic Ocean. He says it’s important to think like and become a performance driver in the situations where the road conditions deteriorate to ensure you
do not lose control. “Panicking is the worst thing to do. If you start hydroplaning, slow the vehicle down gradually, don’t slam on the brakes. Ride it out and be ready for when your tires regain traction with the road,” ACP says. “Those who drive the fastest typically have the slowest control input: they brake slower, they steer smoothly, and these are the types of things that will save you in a skid.” ACP also says the key to this calmness is having a good understanding of your vehicle, its tires, and their limitations. “You need to be able to feel where the edge of your vehicle and its tires are so you know exactly how much you can push it in any climate or condition. A tire that communicates
with you when it’s sliding and when it’s stopping is crucial,” he says. That kind of sensitivity is what makes tires so important for a performance driver like ACP and why he chooses the g-Force(TM) Comp-2(TM) A/S tire, because, as he says, “with these tires, you can feel your vehicle come back into control progressively. It’s like the tires talk to you.” High performance tires help you respond to unexpected situations, whether you’re hydroplaning or starting to skid out. While greater traction during wet weather seasons is certainly argument enough, these tires also open your car’s potential, making for a much more fun driving experience regardless of the forecast. - (BPT)

Toast to this trifecta of wonderful wines to share at holiday celebrations
Glad tidings: Wonderful wines to share at holiday celebrations As the weather cools and the fireplace whets your appetite for comfort and relaxation, thoughts naturally turn to friends, family, good food and drinks ... enjoyable moments this season so notably brings. Whether you plan to be the host or a guest at the festivities, you can make a lasting impression by offering up some tasty and carefully selected pairings of wine and appetizers. Sharing delicious food and drinks can be a great conversation starter and create memorable holiday experiences. Consider these suggestions for delicious combinations that will impress even your most experienced wine-loving and foodie friends. * Choose a bottle of Leese-Fitch Cabernet Sauvignon, hailing from where cab is king, sunny California. The enjoyable finish of this full-bodied wine features hints of toasted coconut and rich vanilla to balance out the dark fruit overtones. The meat lovers in your group will enjoy this wine with easy-to-prepare braised beef short ribs or turkey meatballs. You could even offer up a strategic selection of crackers and aged cheeses, ranging from a sharp cheddar to a higher-end Chalosse or Reblochon. Picture those pairings as you reunite with friends around the holiday table. * A pinot noir can be an excellent introduction to red wine for the white wine drinker, and is a great choice for the holiday season because it pairs effortlessly with a variety of foods. Whip up
a batch of salmon tartare on toasted wontons for your next dinner party to go with the light, red fruit and earthy elements typical of this varietal. Try the Moobuzz Pinot Noir, named after “the land of milk and honey” (the California Central Coast), which features an abundance of red currant, dark cherry, rich mocha and wild strawberry ... with a finish one critic compares to “a velvet blanket.” This is one you’ll want to snuggle in! * Those celebrating a special occasion, or any day that ends in “Y,” may enjoy the festive White
Knight Prosecco D.O.C. with crisp aromas of acacia flower, apple, white peach and citrus fruit, this bubbly is a nice change from the typical white wine. It is great by itself as an aperitif or as a base for a festive French 75 cocktail. Enjoy this lively sparkler with mini quiches at a wedding shower, gathering of friends or your company holiday party. Visit 3badge.com for information on where to purchase these wines, or to learn more about 3 Badge’s strong portfolio of award-wining beverages. - (BPT)

Angelitos de Oro Raises Over $325,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters
The Ladera Ranch News
Sherry Bilbeisi with Georgina Jacobson, Kathy Harrison, Natalie Photos by Ann Chatillon Pickup, and Naomi Edwards For the past 15 years, the Angelitos de Oro, a volunteer auxiliary that raises funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, has an event that the ultimate fashionista/shop-a-holic yearns for – the Angelitos Card Week. In partnership with South Coast Plaza, the week-long shopping fundraiser offers cardholders 20 percent saves at stores not normally known for giving “sales” or discounts. This year, there were over 100 participating in the shopping extravaganza – from boutiques to name brand retailers; many shoppers were elated to see some of their favorites on the list. The start of the shopping week, was the ultimate Preview Day Champagne reception, which was chaired by Natalie Pickup and Georgina Jacobson. It served as a kickoff to the week of shopping and was held in South Coast Plaza’s Jewel Court. It was attended by more than 200 cardholders; the event included a light lunch catered by Quattro Caffé and attendees sipped on exquisite champagne while eyeing the fashions that were on display. Debra Gunn Downing, Executive Director of Marketing at South Coast Plaza, welcomed attendees and introduced Melissa Beck, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters and Angelitos de Oro President Sherry Bilbeisi. A highlight of the afternoon was a fashion presentation led by Downing Debra Gunn Downing (South Coast Plaza Executive Director, that featured Preview Day stores including Bottega Veneta, Burberry, Coach, Escada, Intermix, Oscar de la Renta, REDValentino and St. John. Marketing) with Mary Allyn Dexter and Marilyn Wooten Each boutique showcased seasonal looks and invited attendees to use their Angelitos Cards following the luncheon to receive 20 percent savings one day early. This year, the group raised more than $325,000. “Angelitos de Oro has made significant contributions to our agency over the last 55 years and 2016 is no exception,” says Melissa Beck, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters. “We are incredibly grateful for the time and dedication that went into making this Angelitos Card Week an enormous success. Our agency provides more than 3,000 children annually with mentoring relationships, and support through fundraisers like this one allows us to continue expanding our program to change the lives of even more local youth.” To date, Angelitos de Oro has raised nearly $6,000,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters, primarily through the sale of the Angelitos Shopping Card. It comes every year in October and folks drive from miles away to attend, purchase the card and jump on the savings. Funds raised from the sale of cards, Golden Angel sponsorships and 10 percent of Preview Day proceeds donated by Preview Day boutiques will support the nonprofit’s programs that match an adult or qualified teen volunteer with a youth facing adversity. Big Brothers Big Sisters serves Naomi Edwards (Angelitos Card Kehaulani Sanares models more than 3,000 children annually with three mentoring models to achieve coach Benefit Co-Chair impactful results, including a 99 percent graduation rate, 89 percent college enrollment and improved attitudes regarding success after high school. Big Brothers Big Sisters believes that with the support of a caring mentor, every child has the ability to achieve his or her full potential. It is the nation’s largest donor- and volunteer-supported mentoring organization, serving a quarter-million children annually. Based in Santa Ana, the Orange County agency was incorporated in 1958 and works as a local extension of the national effort to make professionally supported, one-to-one matches between mentors (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”) facing adversity. Together with the Inland Empire agency, which opened its doors in 2013, the local organization serves 3,000 children annually through programs that improve the odds of youth performing better in school and avoiding violence and illegal activities. Small Plates for a Big Party This holiday season don’t let a main dish hog all the glory. Instead let guests feast on a festive spread of small plates and sides. Snack-size portions of a wide range of delicious dishes are the perfect solution for entertaining. A large, heavy meal can leave guests feeling lethargic. Keep your party lively with lighter bites that guests can nibble on throughout the night. Another advantage of a small plate menu is that guests will appreciate the chance to sample many flavors without fear of overindulging. Get your party planning started with these tips: • Keep dishes simple and put the focus on quality ingredients, such as naturally lactose and gluten free Jarlsberg cheese. Best known for the classic wedge available in original and smoked flavors, Jarlsberg cheese offers a mild, mellow, nutty and delicious taste that is perfect for any cheese board and pairing with meats of your choice. • Give traditional vegetable sides a special boost to make them party perfect. Basic asparagus gets a fresh twist with this Asparagus Tart, which blends savory Jarlsberg brand cheese and a pastry for a pretty presentation you can cut into squares before serving. • Plan your menu with the clock in mind. Choose foods that will taste great for the duration of your party without drying out or loosing flavor, such as this Tomato Gratin. • Keep cold dishes chilled by setting the serving bowl inside a larger bowl filled with ice (add some flair by tinting the ice or adding decorative accents). • Use burners to keep the heat on warm dishes, or simply rotate in fresh batches periodically. Give your holiday entertaining an extra boost this year with Jarlsberg Cheese’s Great Holiday Giveaway, which runs through Dec. 31 and offers prizes for holiday entertaining, including a DSLR camera as the

grand prize and weekly charcuterie party kits. Learn more and enter (once per day) at Facebook.com/ Jarlsbergusa, and find more holiday entertaining recipes at jarlsberg.com. Asparagus Tart 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed 2 cups Jarlsberg cheese, shredded 1 pound asparagus 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves salt and pepper Heat oven to 400 F. Prepare baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll out puff pastry into 16-by10-inch rectangle, trimming uneven edges. Place on baking sheet. With knife, lightly score pastry dough 1 inch from edges to mark rectangle. Using fork, pierce dough inside markings at 1/2-inch intervals. Bake until golden, about 15 minutes. Remove pastry shell from oven and sprinkle with shredded cheese. Trim asparagus spears to fit crosswise inside pastry shell. Arrange in single layer over cheese, alternating ends and tips. Brush with oil, sprinkle thyme leaves and season with salt and pepper. Bake until spears are tender, about 20 minutes. Tomato Gratin 8 medium ripe tomatoes 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 4 garlic cloves, sliced 4 sprigs fresh thyme (or 4 basil leaves, chopped) salt and pepper, to taste 2 ounces toasted pine (pignoli) nuts 1/2 pound (8 ounces) grated Jarlsberg cheese Heat oven to 350 F. Cut tomatoes in half. In bowl, whisk together vinegar, olive oil, garlic, thyme, salt and pepper; gently mix in tomatoes. Transfer to ovenproof dish, turning tomatoes cut side up before baking 15 minutes.

When tomatoes are cool enough, remove skins before returning to baking dish. Sprinkle tomatoes with nuts and cheese. Return to oven and bake about 10 minutes, or until cheese turns golden and bubbly. Serve as bruschetta on sliced, toasted Italian bread or as a side dish to fish and meat.
Cheesy Mashed Potatoes 4 large baking potatoes, peeled and cut 1 cup Jarlsberg cheese 1 cup milk 1 container sour cream 1/2 cup butter 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
Heat oven to 350 F. Place potatoes in large pot of salted water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer until tender. Drain and bring potatoes to food processor. In food processor, add cheese, milk, sour cream, butter, salt and pepper. Process all ingredients with potatoes until smooth. Pour mixture into baking pan and cover with tin foil. Bake 30 minutes. Uncover potatoes during last 10 minutes to allow browning. Sensational Platters Platters featuring savory finger foods are a flavorful and easy solution for holiday entertaining. Simply assemble ingredients, such as those listed below, on a large wooden or slate board and serve. Get creative by adding fig spreads, fresh fruit or other nibbles you enjoy, and don’t forget the toothpicks and napkins. Be sure to take the cheese out of the refrigerator at least an hour before serving to ensure that it is room temperature to bring out the ideal flavor. Never serve cheese cold. • Wedge or cubed Jarlsberg cheese • Assortment of whole grain crackers and crusty bread slices • Italian Genoa salami, coppa or your favorite charcuterie meats • Assorted olives, nuts and dried or fresh fruits

A Holiday Survival Guide
As the classic song goes, the holidays really are “the most wonderful time of the year.” Between the cozy scent and warmth of the fireplace, festive holiday parties and catching up with loved ones – the merriment of the season is endless. Preparing for the holidays, however, can be a different story. From crowded malls to impressing house guests, this holiday survival guide can help you get more out of the season while maneuvering the process with impressive ease.
Master the Mall. Don’t let the fear of large crowds, retail prices and packed stores stop you from completing your holiday shopping list. If you want to avoid long lines, try visiting the mall when it first opens in the morning and plan which stores to visit first. However, if you are only available during prime shopping hours, the holiday lights and decorations can make the trek to the mall worth your time. Go Digital. Embrace technology as your
shopping companion and download an app to uncover unbeatable sales to ensure you please your little elves without breaking the bank. Beyond shopping apps, download others that are great onthe-go, like the Clorox myStain App, which shows you how to tackle stains – at home or while out and about – so you can keep your festive clothing as bright as the holiday itself. Prepare for Anything. Every savvy holiday host knows to expect the unexpected. Plan a few activities for out-of-town guests so your house never feels too cramped. Create a master schedule of everyone’s travel plans so you always know who will be home at any given time. Make a list of what you want your main holiday meal to look like, and give yourself extra time to prep and adjust ahead of time if anyone requires special accommodations. By making sure all of your ducks are in a row before the festivities begin, you will be able to get the most out of the holidays with minimal stress. Don’t Stress the Mess. Holiday parties are a great occasion to break out a vibrant red lipstick or festive cocktail, but can also lead to smudges and spills on your clothes. Holiday stains know no bounds, but with Clorox 2 Stain Remover & Color Booster, holiday messes are no match. When paired with your favorite detergent, you can pretreat to remove four times more stains than using detergent alone. These four simple steps can help you accomplish everything on your list so you can enjoy a stress and stain-free holiday season. What Gen Z knows and should learn about saving for college Is it ever too early to start saving for college? Is it ever too late? Finance experts say the answer to both questions is a resounding “no,” and an annual Gen Z & Money survey released by TD Ameritrade Holding Corporation (NYSE: AMTD) indicates that members of Generation Z are hearing the message loud and clear. Many members of Gen Z (people born during the 1990s) are either already facing, or are on the verge of facing, their own college funding challenges. Head Research, on behalf of TD Ameritrade, Inc., surveyed 1,000 people, ages 14 to 23, regarding saving for college. Survey results and methodology are available online at www.amtd.com/ newsroom/investorIndex.cfm. “Many parents of Gen Z kids are still paying back loans for their own college education,” says Carrie Braxdale, managing director of investor services for TD Ameritrade, Inc. (TD Ameritrade), a broker dealer subsidiary of TD Ameritrade Holding Corporation. “Aware of their parents’ struggles, this young generation is concerned about the cost of college. Forty-six percent of those surveyed say their biggest post-graduation worry is having a large student loan balance, and 36 percent worry about being able to afford college at all.” College costs continue to rise more than 1,120 percent in the past 35 years, according to a Bloomberg report. The average student loan debt owed was $26,600 in 2011, according to the Institute for College Access & Success. Still, Gen Z has no doubt the investment is worth the money. More than half (54 percent) say obtaining a higher education is critical to achieving success, and 64 percent agree college is worth the Page 16
cost because it will help them secure employment, according to the TD Ameritrade survey. “Parents who work with their children early to develop a financial plan and clearly set financial expectations can help better prepare them for financial success later in life,” Braxdale says. “And even if they start saving when their child is already in high school, they should remember that every dollar they save toward college now is a dollar less they will owe in student loans.” Fortunately, a variety of college savings plans can help better prepare parents and their kids for the future, including: * A 529 College Savings Plan Usually administered through or sponsored by a state government, 529s offer several tax advantages. Earnings in the account are not subject to federal tax and withdrawals for qualified higher education expenses are generally free of state and federal taxes. Contributions are generally not tax deductible, but parents may be able to exclude 529 money from their taxable estate, making them a possible way to reduce one’s estate taxes while helping a child pay for college. * Before investing in a 529 Plan, carefully consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses involved. This and other important information regarding the plan is included in the Program Disclosure Statement and Participation Agreement and each prospectus on the underlying investments, which may be obtained by contacting the issuer. Please read each prospectus, the Program Disclosure Statement, and Participation Agreement carefully prior to investing. Investment return and principal value of an investment
The Ladera Ranch News
will fluctuate so that an investor’s units, when withdrawn, may be worth more or less than their original cost. You should be aware that other states may sponsor their own qualified tuition plans and may offer a state tax deduction or other benefits that are limited to residents who invest in that plan. You should consult with your financial, tax or other advisor about state and local tax benefits or limitations based on your specific situation. Favorable tax treatment by your state of residence should be one of many appropriately weighted factors you should consider in making an investment decision. * Coverdell Education Savings Accounts - In general, earnings and qualified withdrawals in an education savings account are federal tax free. While 529s are exclusively for college, you can use an ESA to help pay for elementary school, high school or college expenses. There are no minimum contribution requirements, and you can put up to $2,000 per child, per year into the account. Contributions are generally not tax deductible. * Custodial accounts - A great way to build assets for children or loved ones, custodial accounts allow you to manage a minor’s assets and investments. The account will be in the child’s name and Social Security number, but it cannot be accessed until he or she reaches legal age. You act as guardian until the child is old enough and can assume control of the assets. Braxdale offers some tips for creating a college investing strategy: * Start early. Even a small amount set aside each month allows your money to start working for you long before the first tuition bill arrives. * Set goals, including the total you
want to have saved and how much you will save each year to reach that goal. TD Ameritrade’s College Planner can help with goal setting by helping project how much you’ll need to save to cover expected tuition costs. * Choose an investing vehicle. Decide which type of college investing plan will best help you pursue your goal. * Track your progress. Check regularly on your college investing accounts to see if you’re on track toward meeting your goals. * Consult a qualified tax advisor. Crispy Bacon Twists with Gouda and Apricot Preserves Cook time: 45 minutes Serves: 15 Nonstick spray flour, for dusting 1 package (2 sheets) frozen puff pastry dough, thawed 1 egg, beaten 1 cup (12 ounces) apricot preserves 2 cups (about 7 ounces) Gouda cheese, shredded 2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary leaves 2 pounds (about 25-30 slices) Smithfield Hometown Original Bacon Heat oven to 375 F. Line two rimmed baking pans with foil, set baking racks in pans and lightly spray racks with nonstick spray. On lightly floured surface, roll out one puff pastry sheet to roughly 8-by-12 inches. Brush top with egg and thinly spread 1/2 cup preserves over dough. Sprinkle evenly with 1 cup shredded cheese and 1 tablespoon rosemary, lightly pressing cheese mixture into dough. Fold short end of dough over to enclose cheese mixture and lightly roll to seal. Cut into 15 1/2-inch strips. Repeat with remaining puff pastry and ingredients. Lay one slice bacon diagonally. Grab one strip of prepared dough by ends and place one end of dough strip horizontally at top end of bacon and roll bacon with dough downward, stretching dough strip while rolling. Place spiral-wrapped bacon twist on prepared rack and repeat. Bake twists 35-45 minutes, or until pastry is browned and bacon crisp, rotating pans as needed for even cooking. Let cool 5 minutes and gently use spatula to remove twists from racks. Serve warm or at room temperature. Tip: For a different flavor, try smoked or aged Gouda or fresh thyme instead of rosemary.

With all the time off, the holiday season is a great time to earn sweat equity on your home. Here are 3 easy projects anyone can do to increase the value of their home.
1. FIX THE SIMPLE THINGS
There are many common things around the house like hinges, wheels on doors, light bulbs, electrical switches, running toilets, and even faucets that are relatively simple items to address. There are many helpful people at your local hardware store that will happily help you fi gure out how to solve these issues. Your home will attract a higher price if there is less to fi x.
2. CREATE A FRESH OUTDOOR SPACE
The outdoor spaces are very important to many buyers. There are many simple things you can do around the yard including planting fresh fl owers, cleaning overgrown areas, trimming trees, power washing patios, and cleaning outdoor appliances that can really increase the appeal of your property by making the outdoor space feel fresh.
3. PAINTING IN STYLE
You’ve seen all the home improvement shows and the house fl ipping shows. What’s the one thing that always gets the most bang for the buck? Interior paint of course. I would love to help you choose paint colors that are most popular with buyers in the current market. Painting is easy and can even be fun. Almost anyone can do it!
