Taking Art to New Heights: The Work of John Duggan
Native Orange County resident John Duggan has lived in southern Italy now for almost three decades, and during that time has become a famous and sought-after artist. He is a unique blend of architect and painter, and has mastered the fine art of handdecorating walls and ceilings with his trompe l’oeil creations. “It’s a lost art even here in Italy. Many homes have decorated ceilings dating back to the late 1800’s, when artisans from Naples would travel around the country and paint elaborate decor in the palazzos and villas of aristocratic families. John studied architecture at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and was introduced to the splendors of Italy while studying in Florence during his final year. He met his future wife who was also studying in Florence. Duggan is also a master watercolor painter, and his studio is filled with both landscapes and portraiture. How does someone who has lived in Italy for half of his life still describe himself as a kid from California? “Well, I was born and raised in Orange County, and have never lost that easy-going California attitude. It’s interesting to see how the rest of the world views California. I live in a town called Lecce in southern Italy in a region known as Puglia, and we share many aspects of California, namely the beautiful beaches and sunny weather. Today Duggan does commissioned work all over the world. We asked Duggan what brought him to Coto? “I first heard about Coto de Caza from my grandmother Margaret, who decided to move here from Garden Grove after she retired in the early 1980’s. As the story goes, she fell in love with the area, walked through a model home, and said “I’ll take it.” The realtor said, “you mean, you like the floor plan? You’d like a house like this one?” And she replied “no, I want THIS house.” The man quickly explained that this was a model home, and that they couldn’t sell that particular house until all the lots in the subdivision were sold. My grandma answered that wouldn’t be a problem, “just let me know when the time comes and I’ll take it.” She was born and raised in rural Kansas, and she had this no-nonsense attitude about her that I truly aspire to myself.” Margaret’s daughter Lynn Larson has asked her nephew John to paint a mural on her living room ceiling. “I really admire the Coto de Caza housing concept, but I think it can be taken a step farther. The area is filled with beautiful homes, each beautifully furnished and personalized to the owner’s taste, but the architecture remains essentially the same. Linda wanted to further personalize her home by asking me to render a sky ceiling that will add depth and perspective to the room. It will also adapt to her beautiful furnishings, much of which belonged to my grandmother. I hope it becomes a model for others to see
just how much a decorated ceiling can add to the beauty and sophistication of a Coto home.” Grandma Margaret was an excellent artist herself, and the walls are filled with her floral paintings. “I was truly inspired by my grandmother for many reasons, but above all by her artistic talents. She is the main reason I chose my field of work, and everything I draw or paint has a piece of her in it. Painting her home is a unique opportunity for me to give something back to her memory.” You can meet John Duggan and see his ceiling mural along with other examples of his work on December 10, 2016, 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. & December 11, 2016 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Lynn Larson’s home on 24112 Country View Drive, Coto de Caza. CA. 92679. Antipasti and refreshments will be served. Free admission, call now to confirm your reservation. For information regarding the event please contact Lynn at 949-374-0486 or (949) 295-3982. 4 Techy Tips For The Ultimate Fall Camping Experience
Camping is a getaway, a break from the chaos and a chance to be in nature for that fresh fall air. For some, camping means getting back to the basics to recharge. But camping doesn’t always mean you need to sacrifice technology. In fact, your smartphone can be one of your biggest assets. To help you get the most out of your fall camping trip, here are four hacks to help you become one with nature while staying connected. Map it out. Smartphones can help you map your route before you even pack your bags. GPS apps create hiking routes and will even sync and save the best ones for future trips. Many apps even allow for adding points of interest along the way. Worried you may lose connection when you hit the trails? Net10 Wireless customers get nationwide coverage on America’s best networks - without any contract or mystery fees, and with savings up to 25 percent* over current plans. No wonder it’s been dubbed the “no worries network.” Look to the stars. Clear nights on the campground can be a great opportunity to grab a blanket near Page 4
the fire and stargaze. Now you’re able to have the knowledge of the entire galaxy at your fingertips. Many apps allow you to view constellations and even planets using augmented reality by holding your phone up to the sky. Go beyond the classics such as the Big and Little Dippers, and learn a bit of history behind new constellations along the way. Liven up the kumbaya. Spice up the trip with the latest tunes. Have your favorite playlist on hand for your trip from start to finish. Many music streaming apps even have created playlists specifically for camping, road tripping and hiking. Bonus tip: Still want more entertainment? Bring along a smartphone projector and play a movie on the back of your tent, under the stars. You’ll be the hit of the campsite. Be prepared with the “no worries network.” Sometimes the unexpected can happen in the wilderness. Be sure to have your phone on hand in case you need to check weather reports or contact a park ranger. For only $40 a month, Net10 Wireless’ no contract cell service makes this easy. You’ll get nationwide coverage on one of America’s top four networks

5 secrets to building the best media room There was a time when only a few could afford a large screen television. The resolution was clunky, the sound poor and the cost high. But over the past decade, technology has advanced so remarkably fast that today a 60-inch television with unbelievably crisp resolution is within many people’s budget. Add to this the fact that tickets for movie theaters are more expensive than ever, and it makes sense why more people are building a home theater in their house. With some planning and amazing electronic toys, it’s possible to create a media room that delivers theater-quality sound and visuals. And you can enjoy it in more comfortable seats and without obnoxious strangers interrupting the show. But 4K televisions, surround-sound speakers and bass cannons are only part of the overall experience. To compliment these electronics features, you need the right setting to amplify the experience. This means taking the time to design a proper media room that enables your equipment. These five indispensable tips will help you do just that. 1. A great media room begins with the right walls. Incredibly strong, Habito(TM) drywall is able to hold up to 30 pounds on a single screw. This drywall does away with wall mounts and the need to find a stud, allowing you to mount your speakers, television or screen exactly where you want them to go. 2. Paint wisely. While what color you choose for your room will be based off personal preference, aim
for earthy, neutral colors that minimize glare. To help draw the focus of the room toward the screen, many paint the wall a burgundy or maroon. 3. Great sound is a result of more than speakers. Designing your room with acoustics in mind is key. Hard surfaces create a sharp, echoing quality to the sound. To avoid this, your media room should be carpeted and instead of hard blinds, use sound dampening curtains to help enhance the sound and keep out the sun. The density of Habito drywall also contributes to reduced sound transmission between rooms, helping to create separation between your media room and the living area of the home. 4. Think about speakers, walls and storage. Though most people’s attention will be drawn to the wall with the television on it, the surrounding walls are equally important. Here is where you mount speakers for the 360-degree sound effect, sconce lighting and floating shelves for
design and storage. To properly achieve this, you need a durable wall, such as Habito drywall, that can both hold the needed weight and is strong enough to make it easy to redesign and remount fixtures as needed. 5. Create lighting to accommodate a variety of moods. A media room is meant to be used in a number of ways. Even when you’re watching a movie, you’ll probably turn the lights up then down before it’s over. For this reason, be sure to install dimmable lights that can easily be controlled. This way, you can keep it dark for the dramatic scenes, and when the pizza arrives, have just enough light to see your food but not detract from the picture quality. It’s easy to only focus on the big “toys” when building a media room. But the secret to a truly great home-theater experience begins in the construction phase, well before anything is plugged in. To learn more about Habito drywall, visit HanginWithHabito.com. - (BPT)

Chocolate and cranberries - a holiday gift of taste! Black and White Holiday Bark sides. Measure out and set aside 2 tablespoons of bittersweet chocolate with Cranberries Yield: 25 pieces Recipe from America’s Test Kitchen Holiday Cookies 2010 Special Issue Use good quality bittersweet and white chocolate in bar form. Chocolate chips contain less cocoa butter so that they can better hold their shape when baked in cookies, but this makes them harder to melt. Using bar chocolate will give you a much better texture in this bark. Scorched chocolate is a very sad thing, so keep a close eye on your chocolate as you melt it. You can also melt your chocolate in a double boiler instead of the microwave if you want. Ingredients 1 pound bittersweet chocolate, chopped, divided 1 cup Rice Krispies cereal 3/4 cup dried cranberries or dried cherries, chopped, divided 1 pound white chocolate, chopped Instructions Line an 8-inch square baking pan with aluminum foil, allowing at least a two-inch overhang on all
for the topping. Microwave the remaining bittersweet chocolate in a bowl at 50% power for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes. Use a spatula to scrape down the sides and stir. Continue to microwave the chocolate for 15 second intervals at 50% power, stirring between intervals, until just small lumps remain. Stir until smooth and pour into the prepared pan. Smooth the top and chill in the refrigerator until firm, about 30 minutes. Combine the Rice Krispies and 1/2 cup of dried cranberries and mix them together. Melt the white chocolate using the same method as the bittersweet chocolate, keeping in mind that white chocolate melts at a lower temperature than bittersweet chocolate. Gently fold the cereal mixture into the white chocolate until evenly incorporated. Spread over the bittersweet chocolate and smooth the top. Sprinkle with the remaining dried cranberries and return to the refrigerator to chill for another 30 minutes.
Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of bittersweet chocolate and pour into a small plastic bag. Cut a small hole in the corner and drizzle the chocolate over the bark. Allow the bark to warm up slightly, about 10 minutes, and pull it out of the pan using the aluminum
foil overhang and transfer to a cutting board. Carefully peel away the foil and cut bark into small squares with a sharp chef’s knife. The bark will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Smart ways to create calm as you rush from holiday to holiday
Less than a month separates Halloween from Thanksgiving. And, this year, Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are all within a day of each other, and the two multi-day holidays both end on New Year’s Day. With end-of-year celebrations coming one after another, transitioning from holiday to holiday can ratchet up your stress level. If you really want to enjoy the holiday season to the fullest, it’s important to find ways to create calm in the chaos of party preparations, gift shopping, meal planning and other forms of busyness. Here are some tips to remain calm and in control as you move through the hectic pace of the holidays: Have a plan The holidays are busy and stressful enough without adding uncertainty and last-minute challenges into the mix. Plan ahead for holiday celebrations so that you know well in advance what you’ll need to make a memorable gathering. The further ahead you plan, the more time you’ll have for preparation, so go ahead and create your Thanksgiving menu while you’re sneaking treats from the kids’ Halloween stash. Start your Christmas shopping list at the same time. Establishing a budget can also
help ensure you stay calm during the holidays. Overspending is one of the most stress-causing experiences of the season. Planning how much you’ll spend for gifts, decorations and entertainment can help remove the stress of watching the bills pile up. Relieve stress with renting The amount of clutter you need in your home always seems to increase with the holidays - from Halloween costumes and decorations, to dishes and silverware for meals. Trying to gather everything in time can be stressful, and figuring out where to store it all after the holidays are over can be even more frustrating. Renting holiday-related items can be a hassle-free way to get what you need without the expense of buying, the logistical challenges of borrowing and the headache of storing stuff after the holidays. Local rental stores carry everything you need to move quickly and calmly from holiday to holiday. You can rent Halloween costumes; chafing dishes, silverware, dishes and linens for a big Thanksgiving meal; and decor for Christmas and New Year’s. You can find tables and chairs, lighting, centerpieces and even portable dance floors for New Year’s parties. Visit www.rentalHQ. com to find an American Rental Association member store in your
area, and remember to reserve items early as the holidays are a busy time for rental stores as well. Repurpose recipes Your guest list probably changes from celebration to celebration. The big Halloween party might include friends from the neighborhood or co-workers; Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are for spending time with family; and your annual New Year’s Eve party involves practically everyone you know. Trying to make different dishes and entirely unique menus for every one of those holiday celebrations could drive you crazy. Try repurposing recipes and reusing dishes that are easy to make, impressive to eat and work for you and your budget. For example, the punch you made for Halloween could also be great for New Year’s, especially with a grownup flare. The pumpkin cheesecake that was the perfect ending to your Thanksgiving menu can be just as delicious for New Year’s. Since each event will probably have a different guest list, it won’t look like you’re repeating yourself. Soothe your senses Gaudy store displays, flashing holiday lights, blaring TV and radio commercials - the sights and sounds of the season can sometimes get to be too much. Soothing your senses
can help create calm amid the chaos. While it may not be possible to completely unplug from the sensory overload the holidays can become, certain tactics can help relax you. Try using aromatherapy at home and even in the office to create a scented oasis of serenity. Scented candles, potpourri or room spray in popular holiday aromas like pine, cinnamon, peppermint and vanilla can subliminally create calm. Music is also one of the most enjoyable aspects of the holiday season. If you love holiday music, playing it in the background while you tackle chores like meal prep or gift wrapping can help relax you and put you in a festive mood. Or, if you’re feeling overloaded with holiday music, put on something else that you find soothing - classical music, jazz or hip hop. Whatever works for you is the right background music to help you enjoy the season! (BPT) -

Shea Theraputic Riding center BBQ Raises $1.3 Million Photos by: Pixel That! Guests of all ages gathered for an evening for the 38th annual BBQ and Family Faire at the J.F. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center in San Juan Capistrano. This event must be one of the largest events I have ever attended - with over 1500 of the Center’s sponsors and friends present to support its mission; what a crowd! Their mission is to improve the lives of people with disabilities through therapeutic horse-related programs. And that they do! It had all the fixin’s for a family-style BBQ with carnival games, a scrumptious BBQ, great hospitality and therapeutic riding demos and hundreds of unique auction items all set in a country family atmosphere, even the lemonade was perfect! Near the front gate, the Sponsor Saloon offered passed hors d’oeuvres and an array of beverages created by the Montage Laguna Beach staff. There were many small touches adding fun, such as a sleight-of-hand magician who entertained guests with “close up” magic. Country faire games of skill, led to prizes of stuffed animals, hats, and other souvenirs. One of this year’s most popular additions was the petting zoo, with its goats, donkeys, a zebu (a small cow), a miniature pig, an alpaca and bunnies. Shea Center Executive Director, Dana Butler-Moburg, welcomed the guests at the rail of the Klein Family Arena where the evening’s featured rider, Navy veteran Kevin Whitney, age 26, presented the colors. He then gave a riding demonstration to show his progress following a parachuting accident that left him with a spinal injury and paralyzed legs. Whitney returned later in the evening in the Samueli Arena to lead one of the evening’s most heartfelt moments, the “Parade of Stars.” This procession of 70 Shea Center clients, their families, and support volunteers moved through the dinner tables to a standing ovation. A stirring video was shown documenting Whitney’s success story that began in a wheelchair at The Shea Center front door and ended with him running and carrying his bride down the aisle at their wedding just eight months ago. Returning this year was popular emcee and auctioneer Shawn Parr, known as the ambassador of country music. Parr knew The Shea Center from his work in Los Angeles when he was the top-rated country music radio disc jockey. He served as the BBQ’s emcee and auctioneer, until moving to Nashville, where he now hosts a nationally syndicated radio show. This year he was able to return to serve up his usual high-energy style that keeps the evening lively and the bids coming. Food for the evening was prepared and served by volunteer members of the Montage Laguna Beach staff. Music through the evening and for dancing was provided by country band Swingshift. There were over 340 unique and fascinating items at the silent auction tables and eight live auction favorites. These included a packet of 4 VIP Jimmy Buffet tickets to one of the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre’s last ever concerts. Another bidder won tickets to “Oldchella,” officially known as “The Desert Trip” in Indio, CA. The festival featured Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Roger Waters, The Rolling Stones and The Who. Long-time Shea Center partners, Jenny and Bill Klein, issued a matching challenge grant for the first $150,000 raised in the Fosheim Rider Support Fund portion of the evening. Then, in a moment of exceptional generosity, Bill Klein jumped up and agreed to match the entire total amount raised for the Fosheim Fund. The Shea Center’s programs address 60 physical and cognitive disabilities including autism, cerebral palsy, developmental delay, speech disabilities and Down syndrome. As a nonprofit 501(c)(3), the organization receives no federal, state or county funding. Rider fees contribute only 12% of The Shea Center budget. The rest is funded solely by grants, donations and fundraising events. The Center is ranked at the “Premier” level by PATH, Intl, the accreditation organization for equine assisted activities. The Shea Center is one of the top five among more than 840 therapeutic riding centers in North America. For more information, visit www.sheacenter.org. Page 12

Judging from the number of decorating crews working in the local area neighborhoods, it appears that the holiday season is fast coming upon us. In times past, many homeowners would bring out their own ladders , go to the store and purchase their own lighting to hang on their homes. However, in recent times, many homeowners opt to hire a crew of professionals who are well-equipped to race up and down scaffolding and ladders to hang the decorating lights, arrange the electronics and timers to make the holidays much happier. these professionals make this task much simpler and exceptionally quicker. A two-story house shown in the photo above, was recently decorated with a complete array of lighting and installation and under one hour.another great selling point
from the decorating crews is that they come back after the holidays, pack the whole thing up and put it in the garage for you or take it away whichever is your pleasure. Nearly all of the local communities hold decorating contests and competitions to determine the best decorated homes in the area. Judging usually takes place between Thanksgiving and December 10 so if you are contemplating joining any of these contests, now would be the time to commence the decorating job at your house. This cheerful band is from the crew of holiday lighting including the Scotty Martin, Alex Bale, Connor Ziencing,Dave Collins, Mike Collins, Anthony Cann,Joshua Fawcett, and Donovan Decair

Turn Thursdays into together time this holiday season Holiday busyness can occupy your weekends, making it difficult to find time to prepare and share a special meal. Instead, why not commit to making Thursday evenings special throughout the season? Instead of trying to do one more thing on the weekend, organically fit togethertime into Thursdays, and fill the evening with your closest friends, TV shows, board games or other favorite entertainment - and don’t forget your favorite foods! The wholesome holiday fare professionals at Simply Organic offer four simple ideas for turning Thursday night into your favorite time of the week this holiday season: * Make it a movie night. Whether you choose a timeless holiday classic or the hottest new release, an evening of movie watching can break the stress and monotony of the week. You can opt for something kid-friendly and let the kids stay up a little bit later, or put them to bed on time and settle in with more sophisticated viewing fare. Pair the movie with your favorite takeout (instead of popcorn) and a warmth-inspiring seasonal beverage. * Serve a wholesome, organic meal. Invite friends to each bring a dish for an evening potluck. Eating together is a favorite way to share the spirit of the season, and serving organic fare communicates your values and caring. You can find plenty of seasonal recipes that incorporate organic ingredients at Page 14
www.simplyorganic.com. * Stage a baking party. You probably planned to do some holiday baking this season, so why not turn it into a fun event? Invite one or two good friends over, and ask them to bring their favorite holiday treat recipe to make. Pool your efforts - and results - to expand your holiday baked goods menu this year. Be sure to get an ingredients list from everyone ahead of time! * Host a holiday appetizer and cocktail dinner. Instead of serving a big meal of foods that everyone’s going to overindulge in this holiday season, an appetizer gathering can be a fun, creative alternative. Whip up holiday appetizers and seasonal cocktails (liquor optional) to capture the spirit of the season. Try these two festive recipes from Simply Organic: Vanilla Clove French 75 Cocktail This French 75 cocktail takes a well-spiced twist with organic vanilla beans, cloves and cinnamon sticks. This recipe makes enough simple syrup for 32 cocktails. Ingredients: 4 Simply Organic Cloves Whole 1 Simply Organic Madagascar Vanilla Beans 3 Simply Organic Cinnamon Sticks 2 cups water 2 cups sugar Rind of 1 orange 6 fluid ounces prosecco, chilled 2 fluid ounces apple brandy
The Ladera Ranch News
Juice of 1 lemon 2 orange or lemon rind twists Directions: To make the syrup, fill a small pot with water. Bring to medium and slowly add sugar, cloves, vanilla bean, cinnamon sticks and orange rind. Once sugar has dissolved, remove from heat and let steep for 15 minutes, until it is a golden orange color. Strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove cloves and orange rind. Store in an airtight container in the fridge. To make cocktails, divide prosecco into 2 champagne flutes. Split apple brandy and lemon juice between flutes, then add 1/2 fluid ounce simple syrup into each flute. Stir with a long spoon, then serve with orange or lemon rind twist. Butternut Squash Soup Shooters Butternut squash soup turns shooter in this recipe featuring organic squash and curry powder. Ingredients: 2 teaspoons Simply Organic Curry Powder Simply Organic Crushed Red Pepper 1 tablespoon butter or olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped (about 1 cup) 4 celery stalks, chopped (about 1 cup) 3 garlic cloves, crushed and chopped 1 3-pound butternut squash, peeled and cubed (about 5 cups)
1 teaspoon salt 5 cups vegetable broth (or a water and broth combo, if desired) 1 cup canned coconut milk fresh cilantro, for garnish cooked chickpeas, for garnish Directions: In a large stock pot, over medium heat, melt the butter or heat the oil. Add the onion and celery. Cook for four to five minutes, until the onions are translucent and the vegetables “sweat.” Stirring frequently, add the garlic and cook for one minute, until fragrant. Add the butternut squash, salt and curry powder. Stir. Add the vegetable broth and bring to a boil. Then reduce to a simmer and allow to cook for 25 to 30 minutes, until the butternut cubes are soft when pierced with a fork. Into the soup, stir coconut milk, then remove the soup from the heat. Using an immersion blender, blend the soup until smooth and creamy. Serve in shot glasses with a garnish of cilantro, chickpeas and red pepper flakes. FAMILY FEATURES
reating one-of-a-kind desserts doesn’t have to take hours in the kitchen or even exceptional baking skills. With a little imagination and the right tools, you can whip up surprisingly delicious sweets that will surprise and delight your friends and family. Focus on flavor If your baking repertoire typically consists of white cake and chocolate frosting, spice things up a bit by experimenting with new fillings and flavor combinations. Opt for complementary or contrasting tastes for a truly delectable dessert. For example, pair fudgy chocolate cake with tangy berries, or see how a bold flavor like lemon adds a new dimension to a mild vanilla. Add a special touch Infusing new flavors into your favorite cake or brownie recipe is surprisingly easy when you use bakeware made for the purpose. Baker’s Advantage Fillables Bakeware helps home bakers easily create “treat-filled” desserts. Each bakeware set comes with two pans: One pan creates the bottom half of the cake and forms indentations in the cake you can fill with fruit, puddings, candy and more, while the second pan creates the top half of the cake, which hides the surprise fillings. Shape it up Artfully applied frosting and other decorations can instantly dress up a basic cake, but another option is upgrading the shape of the cake itself. In addition to traditional square, round and sheet cake pans, the Baker’s Advantage Fillables Bakeware collection includes mini heart cakes, fluted cakes, mini loaf cakes and a cake cones pan. These special shapes make it easy to create enviable desserts out of classic recipes. Find more surprisingly easy dessert ideas at FillablesbyBakersAdvantage.com.
