Dust off the grill and get those favorite barbecue recipes ready – it’s tailgating time! Whether watching at home or at the stadium, big games provide ample opportunities for entertaining and nothing brings friends together like grilled dishes, flavorful sides and delicious drinks. For many, watching the game is only half the experience. The tailgate is the main event and the fun and rivalry it brings is just as important as watching the game. Just as players work hard to prepare football formations, fans are just as focused on preparations for the big party. When it comes to planning your tailgate menu, grilled fare is always a winning choice. While beer has historically reigned supreme as the game day beverage pairing, more fans are looking to mix things up. Here are some tailgate pairings sure to score big with guests at your next game day celebration: Beef Classic selections such as juicy ribs and hamburgers are common fixtures on many tailgating menus. Try creating your own marinades with ingredients like honey, sweet chili sauce, ground ginger or Creole

seasoning. Put a personal spin on classic hamburgers by serving them with interesting toppings like cherry chutney, smoky chili or creamy beer cheese. For side options, consider slowcooked baked beans, jalapeno cornbread muffins or crunchy slaw tossed with a fresh lemon dressing. Bring out the richness of red meats with a glass of Yellow Tail Big Bold Red, which serves up flavors of dark fruits, a hint of spice and bold oak notes. Chicken Whether its wings or sandwiches, chicken is typically on the game day menu, but that doesn’t have to mean boring. Add some extra zing to everyone’s favorite white meat with a spicy curry rub or Asian-inspired marinade blend. Serve these dishes with a side of cucumber or cold pasta tossed with roasted red pepper, mozzarella and cherry tomatoes. Not sure of a beverage selection? Pair your poultry with a sweet moscato or bottled sangria. Seafood Some fans may need a break from the fried foods that grace the tailgate spread. Give guests the option

TAX PLANNING STRATEGIES FOR 2016 FROM KIM COYLE CPA

Dear Client; As the end of the year approaches, it’s a good time to think of planning strategies that will help lowering your taxes for 2016. My goal is for you to leverage your tax deductions and credit to the fullest extent. I want to briefly discuss five different strategies that can be powerful tools in lowering your tax bill. And the really great part is that each of these strategies is easy to understand and implement. Here are the strategies: 1. Prepay Expenses The IRS allows cash-basis taxpayers to prepay and deduct qualifying expenses up to 12 months in advance (through December 2017) without challenge, adjustment, or change by the IRS. For a cash-basis taxpayer, qualifying expenses include lease payment on business vehicles, rent payments on offices and machinery, and business and malpractice insurance premiums. This is a great way to pump up your 2016 deductions with expenses you will eventually pay anyway. 2. Stop Billing Customers and Patients An easy strategy for reducing your taxable income for this year is to stop billing your customers until December 31, 2016. Customers, patients, and insurance companies generally don’t pay until billed. Not billing customers and patients is a time-tested tax planning strategy that business owner have used successfully for years. 3. Buy Office Equipment With Section 179, you can write off up to $500,000 of office equipment in 2016. Qualifying Section 179 purchases include new and used personal property such as equipment, computers, desks, chairs, and certain qualifying vehicles. To qualify for Section 179, you need to both buy the items and put them in business service on or before midnight December 31, 2016. 4. Use Your Credit Cards If you are a sole proprietor, the day you charge a purchase to your business or personal credit card is the day the expense is deductible, Therefore, as a proprietor, consider using your credit cards to buy office supplies and other business necessities. If you operate your business as a corporation, and if the corporation has a credit card in the corporate name, the same rule applies: the date of charge is the date of deduction for the corporation. But if you operate your business as a corporation and you are the personal owner of the credit card, the corporation must reimburse you if you want the corporation to realize the tax deduction, and that happens on the date of reimbursement. Thus, submit your expense report and have your corporation make its reimbursements to you before midnight on December 31. 5. Don’t Assume You Are Taking Too Many Deductions Make sure your record all of your rightful deductions for 2016, because if your business deductions exceed your business income, you have a tax loss for the year. After a few modifications to the loss, tax law calls this a “net operating loss,” or an NOL. The good news is that tax law allows you to carry back the NOL for two years and get instant refunds from taxes previously paid. If, after going back for two years, you still have unused losses, you can carry them forward for up to 20 years. In other words, you have a 22-year window during which you can realize the benefits of your deductions. So always document your expenses in order to get your rightful deductions. Please do not hesitate contact me if you want to discuss in greater depth any of the strategies outlined above.

More than 150 Pop Art works go on view at the Orange County Museum of Art Pop Art Design In the late 1950s, Pop Art burst onto the art scene with nothing less than a bang. On January 7, 2017, the Orange County Museum of Art opened Pop Art Design with more than 150 artworks that are bold, bright, and familiar. Pop Art influenced furniture and architecture, as well as everyday objects. Sofas, lamps, and paper bags became topics of artistic reflection and developed into a genre that moved beyond visual art and included both graphic design and industrial design. Pop Art Design is the first comprehensive exhibition examining the inspirations and cross-references between art and design that continue to shape our society today. The exhibition is on view January 7 through April 2, 2017. Pop Art is one of the most influential art movements since 1945 with a fundamental element of dialogue between design and art. Pop Art Design features artworks from international museums by artists Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, Richard Hamilton, and more; juxtaposed design objects by designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Achille Castiglioni, and Ettore Sottsass; as well as extensive ephemera. “We are excited to host this international exhibition that examines the intersection between Pop art and design,” stated OCMA Director and CEO Todd D. Smith. “OCMA is the only west coast venue for this exhibition, and we are pleased to complement the work in the exhibition with important works from our own collection.” Some of the highlights of the exhibition include George Nelson’s Marshmallow Sofa (1955); Andy Warhol’s iconic Campbell’s Soup Cans II (1969); Studio 65’s Leonardo

sofa which has rarely been exhibited since it was first produced in 1969; Allen Jones’s provocative Chair (1969); Verner Panton’s Cone Armchair K3 (1959); Superstudio’s Passiflora floor or wall lamp (1966), and notable album covers from the 1960s. OCMA will enhance the exhibition with several original artworks from its own collection including paintings by Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and Ed Ruscha, as well as iconic sculptures such as Wedding Souvenir (1966) by Claes Oldenberg and Eraser (1967) by Vija Celmins. “Vibrant and innovative, while also a playful commentary on consumer culture, this exhibition demonstrates the extraordinary influence of the Pop sensibility on all aspects of day to day life,” stated OCMA Senior Curator Cassandra Coblentz. Pop Art’s influence on furniture, graphic design, and architecture has until this point received limited attention. This exhibition unites artworks and design objects, along with photographs, documents, films, and texts. With this variety of material, Pop Art Design demonstrates how design in the early 1950s anticipated later elements of Pop Art when both artists and designers explored the

motifs of the emerging consumer society. Objects of daily use were transformed into artistic pictorial motifs and sculptures while designers, in turn, availed themselves of artistic strategies like quotation, collage, and irony to develop a new aesthetic for everyday objects. Pop Art shaped a new sense of cultural identity, with a focus on celebrity, mass consumer production, and the expanding industries of advertising, television, radio and print media. Pop Art Design offers new insights into the pop phenomenon: the migration of motifs between art and design; the relationship between everyday object and image; and how everyday life first came under the still-dominant influence of pop culture. OCMA INFORMATION Wednesday – Sunday, 11 am – 5 pm; with extended hours Friday, 11 am – 8 pm. Admission: Adults $10, seniors and students $7.50, children 12 and under are free. Fridays are free to the public and parking is always free. Orange County Museum of Art is located at 850 San Clemente Drive in Newport Beach, CA. For additional information, call 949.759.1122 or visit www.ocma.net.

Opening commemorates 75th anniversary of Santa Ana Army Air Base opening

Costa Mesa, CA - After four years of planning and construction, the OC Fair & Event Center will officially open the doors to its new permanent veterans museum, Heroes Hall, on Wednesday, February 15, 2017. The grand opening marks the 75th anniversary of the opening of the former Santa Ana Army Air Base), the current site of the 150-acre event center. Heroes Hall at the OC Fair & Event Center (OCFEC) celebrates the legacy of Orange County veterans and others who have served our nation with a year-round tribute to their stories as told through rotating exhibitions, permanent exhibits and unique educational experiences. Heroes Hall will be open daily 11 a.m.-5 p.m. with free admission and parking. Exhibitions will changes semiannually and are housed in a refurbished two-story barrack building preserved from the original Santa Ana Army Air Base (SAAAB). The inaugural exhibitions include: The SAAAB Story: OCFEC sits on land that once was part of the Santa Ana Army Air Base during World War II. This second-floor exhibit will tell the story of veterans, former SAAAB residents and celebrities Joe DiMaggio, Gene Autry, Joseph Heller and Don the Beachcomber in addition to special units such

as the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, Chinese National Air Force Detachment, Tuskegee Airmen, 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the Navajo Talkers. The Things They Carried: Based the book of the same name by Tim O’Brien, this first-floor exhibit will feature stories about Vietnam War veterans as told through text, photography, film, audio, digital media, art and personal items. Additional narratives and objects will be included from Orange County veterans from World War II up to current military involvement in the Middle East. In addition to free public exhibitions, Heroes Hall will work in conjunction with the Orange County Department of Education to provide 11th-grade students a unique way to meet a California State Standard requiring them to study about the sacrifices of individual U.S. soldiers and the unique contributions of special fighting units. Heroes Hall is also partnering with Arts Orange County, Chance Theatre and Veterans First to be one of two locations for an eight-week theater workshop and showcase with veterans. The performance schedule is yet to be determined. Outside the Heroes Hall exhibition building is the newly constructed Medal of Honor Courtyard and Walk of Honor. At the center of the Medal of

Honor Courtyard is a 36,000-pound, 50-foot-wide cement star that is based on the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest U.S. military honor awarded for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty. Surrounding the Courtyard is the Walk of Honor, two semicircles of pillars with plaques honoring Orange County veterans who received distinguished military honors, local veterans who served in the Korean War, World War I and World War II, and local veterans who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. Planning and construction of Heroes Hall was fully funded by the OC Fair & Event Center, which is the 32nd District Agricultural Association of California Department of Food and Agriculture. Educational

programming and exhibitions will be supported by funds raised by the Heroes Hall Veterans Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. L a d e r a T e e n s L e a r n L e a d e r s h i p Sk i l l s and Inspire Leadership in Others

The Ladera Ranch Teen Leadership Council is a program run and funded by the Ladera Ranch Community Services (LARCS) board to provide teens with opportunities to gain leadership skills which will prove to be essential in the occupational world. It is comprised of twenty-five of Ladera Ranch’s most qualified 7th-12th graders who work to not only benefit themselves but their community as well. TLC’s main aspirations involve community service, planning events for Ladera Ranch teens, and educating youth on the importance of developing leadership skills at a young age. A minimum of ten volunteer hours is required to maintain a position

on the Council. This is easily met, as the council has a presence and volunteers at all LARCS community events. This provides the teens with the opportunity to work behind the scenes at events such as the annual Spring Celebration, Harvest Festival, and Tree Lighting Ceremony. Each year, TLC also strives to serve the community through at least one meaningful service project. This past year, TLC members built a natural playground at the Reserve at Rancho Mission Viejo, a nearby wildlife preserve for children to enjoy. It was a wonderful way for the teens to connect with the environment and give back. Ladera Ranch is known for its amazing events for children and families. Often times, at Community events there is little for teens to or take part in. In Ladera, teens are encouraged to attend and take part in family events, TLC has found ways to use their leadership skills and talents in event planning to help give teens what they want at local events. Presently, the two most significant events put on by TLC are the “Teen Movie Night” in October and the “Teen Zone” during the Fourth of July Celebration. Both events are exclusively for teenagers in Ladera, free of charge. Members of the Council receive a budget which they use to fund, plan,

and execute their events. Everything from food to activities is planned to the finest detail democratically in council meetings. After the event is approved by the LARCS board, the event is set up and staffed by TLC members, who sign up for volunteer shifts. This way, TLC members get the chance to exercise creativity in event planning and practice leadership skills to help teens in Ladera Ranch participate in fun activities with their own age group. TLC hopes to educate and inspire leadership all teens. To achieve this goal, they will be implementing different programs through the media and social networking to reach larger audiences of teens in and around Ladera Ranch. One example is the speaker series, which involves

bringing speakers from various fields and occupations to teach the council about their fields of expertise. The Communications team aims to open this educational process to teens outside the Council, in hopes of inspiring other teens to actively seek leadership opportunities. It is widely understood that most older teens can be reached and taught through technology. Therefore, the council will build up a social media and web presence to influence a wide demographic of leaders better equipped for success. The hope is that these efforts will eventually inspire other communities to implement their own teen leadership councils to broaden the amount of teens learning vital leadership skills at a young age.

Construction Begins on Julianne and George Argyros Plaza and Center at Segerstrom Center for the Arts Photos by Doug Gifford Dee and Larry Higby with Susan Samueli The rain had stopped just in time to celebrate the official ground breaking for Segerstrom Center for the Arts new Julianne and George Argyros Plaza and the Center for Dance and Innovation. Organizers were prepared for a wet afternoon but the clouds parted and blue skies gave way to sunshine as folks gathered inside the tent to celebrate! The plaza has been named in recognition of Julia and George Argyros’ long-time support of the Center and their generous $13.5 million lead gift to the Center’s Next Act campaign. The many new features and amenities of the Argyros Plaza and Center for Dance and Innovation will help to support an assortment of programs and performances offered on the plaza and by the CDI and Center Without Boundaries. These will enable the Center to significantly enhance its artistic programs, performances and venues while responding to the growing needs of a rapidly changing Orange County. John L. Ginger, Chairman of the Board, said, “We are so grateful that Julia and George believe in the importance of this plaza to the quality of life in our community. We are honored that Julia and George support the Center’s goals and are helping to make them happen.” Designed by the firm of Michael Maltzan Architecture, the Argyros Plaza will be a new public gathering place, welcoming and attractive to all of the county’s diverse communities, offering exceptional year- round programs and performances as well as guest amenities that include a café, public stage, shaded seating areas, WiFi and enhanced lighting and sound. Beginning Wednesday, February 1, students in the Capistrano Unified School District can apply to one of 43 different academic programs during the annual School of Choice period. The School of Choice process provides parents with the ability to apply to a school outside of their child’s attendance area on a space-available basis. This year, there are 43 schools with space to accept School of Choice students. Detailed information describing each school and its academic offerings is available online at http://capousdca.schoolloop.com/soc, and many of our schools participate in social media. Parents are also encouraged to contact their schools of interest and make an appointment to tour the campus and visit the classrooms. School of Choice applications will be available online at http://capousdca.schoolloop.com/soc, at local schools, and at the District Education Center, 33122 Valle Road, San Juan Capistrano. The application period begins Wednesday, February 1 and ends Friday, March 3. Completed applications must be turned in between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. either at the school to which the child is applying or at the District Education Center, 33122 Valle Rd.,

San Juan Capistrano, CA. Online applications must also be submitted by March 3. In the event there are more applicants than openings at a particular school, students will be selected by lottery. Notifications will be received by May 1, 2017. There are many educational options in CUSD, including Orange County’s only Mandarin language immersion program; the county’s only public International Baccalaureate (IB) candidate school for students in kindergarten through 8th grade; innovative Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics programs and partnering with local industry and federal government agencies; and online schools for students who may thrive in an independent setting. The District’s online programs are not part of the School of Choice process, but are still accepting applications. Those programs include California Preparatory Academy, the District’s online independent study high school; Capistrano Virtual School, which offers online curriculum to students in kindergarten through 8th grades; and Capistrano Home School for families who prefer to educate their children with the support of credentialed teachers. JUST SOLD Sold $20,000 over asking price in only 3 days!

With all the time off, the holiday season is a great time to earn sweat equity on your home. Here are 3 easy projects anyone can do to increase the value of their home.

1. FIX THE SIMPLE THINGS

There are many common things around the house like hinges, wheels on doors, light bulbs, electrical switches, running toilets, and even faucets that are relatively simple items to address. There are many helpful people at your local hardware store that will happily help you figure out how to solve these issues. Your home will attract a higher price if there is less to fix.

2. CREATE A FRESH OUTDOOR SPACE

The outdoor spaces are very important to many buyers. There are many simple things you can do around the yard including planting fresh flowers, cleaning overgrown areas, trimming trees, power washing patios, and cleaning outdoor appliances that can really increase the appeal of your property by making the outdoor space feel fresh.

3. PAINTING IN STYLE

You’ve seen all the home improvement shows and the house flipping shows. What’s the one thing that always gets the most bang for the buck? Interior paint of course. I would love to help you choose paint colors that are most popular with buyers in the current market. Painting is easy and can even be fun. Almost anyone can do it!
